Doctors: We will not be intimidated

Report to work by Friday or face the sack, striking lecturers told

Striking lecturers have until Friday to report back to work or they will be dismissed. University leadership of Moi and Nairobi Universities in an unprecedented move yesterday ordered departmental heads to file daily returns of the dons with an aim of taking disciplinary action against those who have not reported to work since the strike began 43 days ago. “All members of teaching staff are expected to report on duty on Tuesday March 7 failure to which disciplinary action will be carried out at individual level,” said Moi University Vice-chancellor Laban Ayiro in a memo to all staff. In a memo to all its staff, University of Nairobi Management through its Deputy Vice-chancellor in charge of administration and Finance said only those dons who have been working will be paid. octors have maintained that they will not be intimidated by the government to return to work. Secretary-general of Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union Ouma Oluga in an emotional letter to his colleagues said doctors have always been ready to resume work but warned that they will not do so under threats and intimidation.

“While all doctors have been ready to resume duty, doing so under threats, intimidation and show of disrespect is tantamount to career suicide. Avoid until when we advise so,” Oluga said. From Page 1 even those who can and should take action and make a difference for our country have equally became angry, frustrated and disappointed. “The point is that we all are feeling the same and that means it is not what will break the impasse,” Oluga said. Oluga clarified that for KMPDU, the strike was never a contest of any sorts. “This was simply a struggle to influence public policy relating to how we the Kenyan doctors engage our employer, the government, and how our healthcare can be made to respond to each of our needs as citizens first and then as Doctors second,” he said. President Kenyatta yesterday decried the doctors’ lack of compassion for constantly derailing pay talks by issuing fresh demands. “Hawa watu wanafikiria sisi ni wajinga (These people think we are foolish),” said Mr Kenyatta while officially opening the fourth devolution conference in Naivasha. “If this round of talks fails… we will sort them out,” he said, but did not elaborate what that “sorting” entailed. The move by the government later in the day to withdraw its initial offer and deregister the doctors’ union was seen by many as the President’s way of walking the talk. “Consequently, as a result of the doctors’ failure to call off the strike, the government has now rescinded this offer and there will be no further negotiations on remuneration,” said Mr Munya in the brief press conference, introduced by President Kenyatta.

University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has however dismissed the threats saying that university management cannot resort to threats and intimidation while they are engaged in a lawful industrial action. UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga told the University Vicechancellors to make good their threats and face the ‘real music. “My attention has been drawn to a new immoral practice by some vice-chancellors to withdraw the meagre salaries of dons, to starve us into servitude,” Wasonga said in a statement to newsrooms. “As a result, there will be a peaceful procession by University Dons under the auspices of UASU from University of Nairobi Chancellor’s/ Graduation Square near CCU to Office of Deputy President to present a Petition regarding the 2013/17 CBA; the subject of the current general strike,” he added. Major strides made in gender equality as the world marks Women’s say Kenya today joined the rest of the world in marking this years’ International Women day with a majority of Kenyans saying the country has made progress toward gender equality. According a survey finding conducted by the Institute for Development studies, University of Nairobi and the Pan African research network Afrobarometer released this morning in Nairobi, 56 percent of Kenyans say that women’s equality has improved in recent years. The survey found out that more than threefourths 78 percent of Kenyans say wifebeating is “never” justifiable with more than six in 10 Kenyans at 63 percent do not agree that men should be given priority in hiring if jobs are scarce. While nine out of 10 Kenyans say that girls now have the same educational opportunities as boys, perceptions of gender equality drop to seven out of 10 with regard to earning an income and less than six out of 10 with regard to the right to own or inherit land. The survey was conducted between September and October last year and 1,599 adults were interviewed. According to the survey, Men are almost twice as likely as women to reject equal rights for women when it comes to owning and inheriting land at 39 percent against 21

percent. About two-thirds of Kenyan women 63 percent and men 68 percent say the government has performed well in promoting opportunities and equality for women. Three-fourths at 73 percent of Kenyans say women should have the same chance as men of being elected to political office but men at 66 percent are less likely than

women. More than half 54 percent of Kenyans say they fear political violence and intimidation. The findings are being released at a time when the country is gripped by tense political competition pitting women candidates against their male counterparts ahead of August general election. @sam_x254

What Trump discussed with President Kenyatta on phone T

error and trade took the centre stage of US President Donald Trump and his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta in a telephone conversation yesterday. In a brief statement by the White house President Trump spoke with President Kenyatta of Kenya to reaffirm the strong bilateral relationship between our two countries. “The two leaders discussed economic partnership and mutual dedication to overcoming terrorism and other regional security challenges through close cooperation,” read a statement from the White House. President Trump expressed appreciation for Kenya’s significant contributions to the African Union Mission in Somalia and recognized Kenyan troops sacrifices in fight against Al-shabaab. “The two leaders also discussed ways to boost bilateral trade investments in Kenya and border East Africa region,” reads the statement. In January 13, President Trump made his first phone calls to African heads of state speaking with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and South African President Jacob Zuma.

President Kenyatta

Nigeria and South Africa said the calls were made at the request of the U.S. president, who until now has said little about Africa or African issues since assuming office last month. The Nigerian presidency said Trump and Buhari discussed issues of terrorism, and said Trump assured Buhari the United States is ready to make a new deal to help Nigeria “in terms of military weapons.” Trump also commended Buhari for the strides Nigeria is making against Islamist radical group Boko Haram, and invited Buhari to come to Washington at a mutually convenient date. The South Africa Presidency said that in their call, Trump and President Zuma affirmed their commitment to “strengthening the already strong bilateral relations between the two countries.” It said they also discussed the need to work together on other issues, “especially the quest for peace and stability on the African continent.” Trump also “suggested” that South Africa should cooperate more with the US war on terror, though specifics were not given.

State of Hawaii to challenge Trump’s new travel ban

The state of Hawaii has said it plans to seek a temporary restraining order on tomorrow against President Donald Trump’s new executive order restricting travel from six Muslimmajority countries. The Trump administration this week issued the revised immigration order replacing an earlier, more-sweeping one which had been blocked in court. The new measure prevents citizens of Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from obtaining US visas for at least 90 days. It also suspends the refugee resettlement process for 120 days. The federal judge who blocked the first ban was persuaded by the argument of two state attorneys general that it was causing “irreparable harm”. It is less clear those arguments would prevail the next time around. “We are carefully reviewing the new executive order to determine its impacts on Washington State and our next legal steps,” Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson said Monday. Immigration advocates said the new ban still discriminated against Muslims and failed to address some of their concerns with the previous directive. Noor Zafar, an attorney with expertise in abusive immigration practices at the Centre for Constitutional Rights, New York, said the new executive order “is still a ban designed to keep Muslims out of this country”. “The Trump administration tweaked the language to take out some of the most blatantly unconstitutional provisions such as the provision barring greencard holders,” she said.

A protester at Hawai State carrying a placrd to register her displeasure over the ban of muslims to get to America.

“The discrimination and the antiMuslim bias is still there and that’s evident by statements President Trump and officials from his administration have have made.” Camille Mackler, director of legal initiatives at the New York Immigration Coalition, called Trump’s new order a “backdoor Muslim ban.” “We still think it’s as problematic as the first travel ban,” she said. “It didn’t happen in a vacuum, it happened within the context of the comments that have been made before and since the election, this sort of broader war on immigrants that the Trump administration is fighting.”

The next wave of legal challenges will have to directly confront the question of whether the immigration order constitutes a Muslim ban, an issue that the courts have so far set aside. “While the White House may have made changes to the ban, the intent to discriminate against Muslims remains,” said New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU’s Immigrant Rights Project, said Trump “has recommitted himself to religious discrimination, and he can expect continued disapproval from both the courts and the people”. Legal experts said it would, however, be harder

to challenge because it affects fewer people living in the United States and allows more exemptions to protect them. “The clear intent is to convince the courts that the ban is the result of careful deliberation rather than religious animus,” said Elizabeth Goitein, co-director of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Liberty and National Security Program. “But the tactical tweaks in this latest edition cannot rescue the order’s constitutionality,” she said. “Underneath the softened rhetoric and other adjustments lies the same poisonous policy: an effort to restrict Muslims’ entry into the US.”

Lobby launches centre to protect women journalists in Afghanistan

A journalists protesting over harrasment of journalist in Afghanistan.

Lobby launches centre to protect women journalists in Afghanistan Reporters without Borders today launched a centre to protect women journalists in Afghanistan, the second most dangerous in the country for the profession after Syria. The centre will aim to lobby the government for better working conditions and rights for women reporters. It will also talk to families to try to change perceptions that journalism is no job for a woman. “We want to support women journalists both in war zones and within the news organisations for which they work to defend both their

rights and their physical safety,” the centre’s president Farideh Nikzad said. The biggest challenges are security and sexual abuse in the workplace, Nikzad said. RSF’s secretary-general Christophe Deloire added: “By protecting women journalists, we are defending media freedom in Afghanistan.” The country currently has some 300-400 women journalists, mainly in the big cities. They find themselves caught between Taliban militants on the one hand and their own families on the other, who often do not consider the job to be a suitable profession for a woman.

Black Americans more often wrongfully convicted: study African-Americans are far more likely to be wrongfully convicted of crimes such as murder, sexual assault and illegal drug activity than whites, a study has revealed. The study from the National Registry of Exonerations, which examined cases from 1989 to October 2016 found out that of the Of the 1,900 defendants convicted of crimes and later exonerated, 47 percent were African-Americans - three times their representation in the population. A review of nearly 2,000 exonerations in the US over almost three decades found. The study, released yesterday also said black Americans were about seven times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder than white Americans. “In the murder cases we examined, the rate of official misconduct is considerably higher in cases where the defendant is African-American compared to cases where the defendant is white,” said Samuel Gross, a University of Michigan Law School professor. He said unconscious bias, institutional discrimination and explicit racism, were factors in some of the wrongful convictions. When it comes to drug crimes, black Americans are about 12 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted than innocent white people, the study said. It also took longer for innocent African-American names to have their names cleared, the study found. “On average, black murder exonerees spent three years longer in prison before release than white murder exonerees, and those sentenced to death spent four years longer,” said the report, entitled Race and Wrongful Convictions in the United States. A separate study from the same group also released on Tuesday showed that 2016 set a record for known exonerations in the United States since 1989 at 166, up from 160 cases in 2015. Nearly 60 of exonerations came from Texas, the most of any state, where district attorneys in the counties that include Houston and Dallas have set up integrity units to examine prosecutions for possible problems. Most of the Texas exonerations were drug convictions in Harris County, home to Houston. In many of the cases, suspects pleaded guilty to drug possession and months or years later, reports from crime labs showed that seized material contained no controlled substances. Nationwide, 52 defendants were exonerated of murder and 73 were exonerated of non-violent crimes, such as drug possession.

Express Wi-Fi moves to connect remote Kenyans to the internet Kenyans in remote regions are set to be connected to the internet after the US tech giant Facebook recently announced a partnership deal with Surf, a local internet provider to offer low-cost services. The move comes at a time when key internet players in the market are offering similar services but at a cost that is prohibitive to low-income earners. The ‘Express Wi-Fi’ pricing model would in the near future, undercut other key players in the Kenyan market, which might renew price wars amongst stakeholders. Among some service providers, daily Internet bundles cost Sh10 for 40 megabytes (MB) and Sh20 for 100mb while Safaricom daily bundles cost Sh10 for 15 megabytes and Sh20 for 35 megabytes. The weekly Express Wi-Fi bundles cost Sh50 for 300mbs and Sh100 for 500mb. Already Kenyans in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties are enjoying the services, which were rolled out three weeks ago and will soon be launched to other remote regions later this year. Facebook says it is working with carriers and local entrepreneurs to help expand connectivity to underserved locations not only in Kenya, but across the globe. “Express Wi-Fi seeks at empowering local entrepreneurs to help grow

Higher sales push KenolKobil full year pre-tax profit to Sh3.4 billion Oil marketer, KenolKobil has recorded a Sh3.4 billion pre-tax profit for the full year ending December 2016 on the backdrop of higher sales and a relatively stable Kenyan currency witnessed in 2016, the firm has said. During the period under review, sales revenue grew by 20 per cent compared to what the marketer recorded in 2015 in line with growth in volumes as well as the effects of changes in global oil prices. “For the year 2016, KenolKobil net earnings stood at Sh2.4 billion compared to Sh2 billion posted the previous year. The company recorded volume growth in all sectors which resulted in total volume growth by 30 per cent as compared to the previous year,” the firm said in a statement. In 2016, the group further intensified cost cutting measures, which saw an addition of 30 retail network stations across the country. “Over the year, the group focused on reducing the financing costs to safeguard the

interests of the shareholders which helped the group to realize a massive reduction in net financing costs by 54 per cent in comparison with previous year results,” the group said. The net debt level for the year remained subdued despite the increase in international oil prices which partly contributed to the drop in financing costs. David Ohama, Group Managing Director said the marketer realized a net forex gain of Sh2.5 million for the year 2016 which was a significant milestone from a forex loss of Sh232 million recorded in 2015. “For the better part of 2016, the Kenyan currency was relatively stable against the US dollar with weakening seen in the third and for the quarter of the year,” he said. Investors counting losses as Simple Homes Co-operative shuts down Dozens of investors in the real estate sector are counting their losses after a prevalent real estate firm, Simple Homes Housing Co-operative inexplicably closed down. The firm, which started in 2015, promised shareholders to invest in its business, and the firm would in turn, help them purchase their own houses. Last week, however, investors were shocked o find the offices of Simple Homes locked and customer care lines terminated. Sources reveal that the firm came with one of the best offers in the market to lure more investors from major industry players, a move that won them thousands of stockholders, both locally and internationally. Recent reports from leading real estate firm Cytonn revealed that the real estate sector has witnessed a slowdown in growth since the final quarter of 2016, a trend that is projected to be witnessed this year as well. The slow growth is attributed to a banking law which capped interest rates at 4 per cent above the Central Bank Rate (CBR). The World Bank Group had also projected sluggish growth in real estate for the first three-quarters of 2017, saying the August 2017 polls have lowered investor confidence. The sector is one of the most lucrative industries in Kenya. The country is currently facing a shortage of more than 50,000 housing units annually and the demand is projected to double as Kenya’s population increases. @enock_x254

‘Social value’ generated by M-Pesa reaches Sh184 million WEDNESDAY MARCH 8, 2017

Safaricom has marked 10 years since M-Pesa’s launch on March 6, 2007, with a new ‘True Earnings’ Report by KPMG, using KPMG’s ‘True Value’ methodology finding that customers have, by far, been the largest financial beneficiaries of the platform. KPMG performed an evaluation of the social value created by M-pesa using Social Return on Investment principles (SROI). SROI is an opensource, principles-based method used to account for social change created as a result of certain investments or activities. This is one of the methodologies which is central to understanding the ‘True Earnings’ of a company or service. The ten year study of M-Pesa’s impact finds that the Social Value generated by M-Pesa grew from Sh83 million in 2007, to Sh184 billion by the end of March 2016. KPMG finds that M-Pesa customers were the biggest beneficiary of this social value, receiving a return in value of Sh160 billion as a stakeholder group in the financial year ending 2016. “Although Safaricom earns growing revenues from the M-Pesa product, the social value it has generated for customers continues to exceed the financial benefits to Safaricom in each of the years since its inception,” said Neil Morris, Climate Change & Sustainability Director AT KPMG South Africa. In the last decade, Kenyans have established M-Pesa as the world’s leading mobile money platforms by leveraging the power of the mobile phone to achieve convenience in different aspects of their lives. Customers have made savings in time, as well as experienced increased safety and wellbeing as a result of not needing to carry cash. KPMG notes that the only negative impact, experienced by a very small number of stakeholders, was a reduction in wellbeing as a result

A man stands next to an M-Pesa service outlet in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya, December 1, 2016. M-Pesa is a mobile money transfer platform offered by Kenya’s mobile network operator Safaricom. EPA/DAI KUROKAWA of spending less time with family members, as they no longer need to receive financial contributions in person. By 2016, each M-PESA customer had seen social value linked to the use of M-PESA of Sh9,679 in the course of the year, up from Sh3,202 when the product started in 2007. Over the same period, customers grew from 20,000 in March 2007 to more than 16 million by March 2016, while the value of transactions grew from Sh10.3 million to Sh5.2 trillion over the same period. “Year after year, the role played by M-PESA in customers’ lives has widened as Kenyans embrace the platform for a greater number of services. Our sustained investment in innovation and technology has enabled our customers to accomplish their goals. Ultimately, we understand that M-PESA’s success is underpinned by our customers’ success,” said Bob Collymore, CEO, Safaricom.

When looking at the magnitude of each of the impacts for stakeholders over the last ten years, The True Earnings report showed that customers saw 63 per cent of the social value experienced to be connected to the financial resilience that comes with receiving and having control over money. The second largest impact at 30 per cent has been in the time and cost saved in using M-PESA compared to the alternatives, while 7% of the impact comes from access to credit and ability to purchase goods that customers would not have ordinarily been able to afford. As a stakeholder group, M-Pesa agents experienced the second highest Social Value from M-Pesa at Sh20.1 billion in the year ending March 2016. The number of agents increased from 2,000 in 2007 to more than 101,000 at the end of March 2016, with many agents creating entire businesses out of M-Pesa. Separate findings by Financial Sector Deepening credit M-Pesa with the

growth of financial inclusion in the country, which grew by more than 50 per cent in the last ten years to stand at 75.3 per cent of Kenyans in 2016. The mobile phone is also the preferred mode of savings in the country, with 60 per cent of Kenyans having their savings in services such as M-Pesa, M-Shwari and KCB M-Pesa. The number of active monthly M-Pesa customers in the country stands at more than 18 million customers. Globally, Vodafone now offers M-Pesa in 9 other countries: Albania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, India, Lesotho, Mozambique, Romania and Tanzania. As at December 2016, M-Pesa served almost 29.5 million active customers through a network of more than 287,400 agents in the ten countries. During 2016, the service processed around 6 billion transactions, peaking in December 2016 at 529 transactions every second. @kevin_x254

Campaign to get health workers paid dominates Nairobi conference The ongoing Africa Health Agenda International Conference in Nairobi has confirmed its support for underpaid health workers by making the issue a top concern. This follows the launch of a continental campaign to get community health workers paid and formally integrated into the health system. Attendees have said the conference will go down as a historic event for community health workers across Africa. The campaign was launched by Amref Health Africa, the main sponsor of the conference, which drew more than 700 delegates on the first day. “In this campaign, we are advocating for the remuneration of community health workers and their inclusion into the formal health workforce,” said Dr.

Githinji Gitahi, Amref Health Africa Group CEO. Presently, community health workers are neither paid nor remunerated across many African countries, including Kenya. This is despite the critical role that they play in the continent’s health infrastructure, especially at the community level where many Africans lack access to the formal health system. Dr. Gitahi added that this was the ideal approach for Africa, given the huge role the community health workers play in bridging gaps in the formal health workforce. “Considering that more than 50 per cent of Africans do not access the formal health system, Community Health Workers are a critical and necessary part of the continent’s health infrastructure, helping to link the

communities to the health system,” he said. The World Health Organization (WHO), which was represented at the conference, voiced its support for a community based health system, adding that this was where the health care need was most pressing. “Community health workers need sustainable careers and stable income,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, Regional Director for the WHO Africa Regional Office, underscoring the timeliness of the campaign. Other organisations present at the conference were pharmaceutical giant GSK, Ministry of Health, and Nairobi City County – all of whom were event co-sponsors. In terms of the implementation strategy for the campaign, Amref said that it

would leverage on partnerships with governments and private sector. The international health NGO has already started partnering with GSK in this area. The just unveiled Community health worker campaign will allow the two to scale up these activities. “At GSK, we believe in releasing the potential of our community health workers through knowledge transfer. We do this by reinvesting 20% of our profits from Least Developed Countries in training frontline healthcare workers. Working with partners like Amref, we have invested approximately £21 million, trained 43,000 health workers and reached 17.5 million people in 39 countries,” said David Pritchard, Vice President Africa and Emerging markets for GSK. @kevin_x254

Access to finance ranked biggest barrier to growth among women entrepreneurs Up to 71 per cent of women entrepreneurs in East Africa finance the start of their businesses from their own savings because they have no access to finance. This is according to a research report commissioned by the Graça Machel Trust (GMT). The research seeks to explore growth barriers faced by female entrepreneurs in east africa, to establish the key factors that hinder growth from micro and small enterprises to medium and large-sized businesses. The research covered Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda and surveyed 664 women entrepreneurs across all sectors of the economy. The dominant sectors include retail (17 per cent), agriculture (13 per cent) and consulting services (11 per cent). The more male dominated sectors of technology, construction and engineering featured less than 3 per cent, respectively. “Women entrepreneurs make an important and ever-growing contribution to African economies through the various businesses they own and run,” says Nomsa Daniels, Chief Executive Officer of the Graça Machel Trust. “Despite socio-economic challenges and an uneven playing field, women continue to pursue entrepreneurship as a path to financial freedom by finding innovative ways to run and grow their businesses. This research is unique as it is one of few studies that looks at women entrepreneurs from a regional perspective, to assess similarities and differences in how women entrepreneurs are coping with financial and nonfinancial barriers to growth,” Daniels adds. Women’s negative and fearful attitudes towards external finance comes from the fact that they do not believe they have the requirements to access financing from banks and other financial institutions. The research established that the two biggest financial constraints that hinder female entrepreneurs’ access to finance were collateral requirements and prohibitive interest rates. Moreover, of the sampled population, only 27 per cent of women entrepreneurs successfully applied for a loan for their business. “We want to contribute to unlocking the incredible opportunity that women entrepreneurs offer to the economic advancement of the continent and will be looking at implementing financial and non-financial interventions to specifically address some of the barriers highlighted in this study,” she adds. @kevin_x254

Sinking apartment still standing 3 months later as cracks appear in adjacent block WEDNESDAY MARCH 8, 2017

Three months after tenants evacuated Ruaka’s infamous sinking Lancore Apartments in Kiambu County, the precarious structure still stands. The Kiambu County government is still debating whether or not to bring down the building as tenants in neighbouring flats are planning to vacate their homes after cracks were discovered in their living rooms. National Construction Authority (NCA) officials deemed the structure unfit for occupation on November 25, 2016. At the time, the building’s pillars were buckling under the weight of a poorly-constructed structure. Cracks were noticed on a Wednesday night on November 23, 2016. By Friday that week, most of the units had been vacated. Moses Nyakiongora, a National Building Inspectorate official at the State Department of Housing, said in November that they would inspect the building to determine if it could be salvaged rather than be brought down. He also added that the department would inspect the surrounding areas that have a history of poor construction including Ruaka and Ruiru. “Since it was an already occupied

building, the mandate falls within the Kiambu County Government,” Wangui Kabala, Head of Corporate Communications at the National Construction Authority told X News. Kabala stated that a multi-agency committee, headed they National Buildings Inspectorate Chairman, Moses Nyakiongora was set up to determine whether the building could be saved or should be brought down. In an interview conducted in December, 2016, a tenant from the Lancore Apartments told X News that finding a new house would be difficult. He had been shacking up with his girlfriend in the doomed building and was forced to move to a more expensive apartment on short notice. “We don’t have a choice,” he said. “I will just collect my deposit and go,” he added, stating that he blames the buildings’ contractors, arguing that they deceived the owner by claiming the foundation was stable. The five-storey building, valued at an estimated Ksh 200 million, was the subject of much scrutiny late 2016. Tri Mucatha, an apartment block adjacent to the sinking building, was given a clean bill of health by NCA in

November 2016. A month later, it also developed cracks. Tenants confirm that thin lines were first noticed in late December, barely a month after the other apartment began to sink. Other tenants have since noticed similar crevices near their window frames. The fissures caused panic among Tri Mucatha residents and at least two units have since been vacated as tenants look for safer places to live. “It is not big or deep, but it’s definitely not just the plaster,” said a young woman living in the block, who was describing a crack on her wall. These developments come ten months after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an audit to look into what appears to be a growing a trend of collapsing buildings in Nairobi. The May, 2016 audit covered most parts of Eastlands, Dagoretti, Kasarani, Zimmerman, Roysambu, Githurai 44 and 45, Garden Estate, Thome, and Kilimani. The report concluded that buildings collapse because of poor quality of concrete, lack of proper foundation and use of substandard building stones. Meanwhile Ruaka’s Lancore Apartments rarely sees any foot traffic save for a guard or two posted outside

A multi-agency committee, headed they National Buildings Inspectorate Chairman, Moses Nyakiongora was set up to determine whether the building could be saved or should be brought down. the building. National Buildings Inspectorate Chairman, Nyakiongora’s team has not yet made a decision on what will happen to the structure.

“The committee is yet to release the final report, which shall be shared upon release,” Kabala told X News. @Dennis_x254

IT’S ALREADY TRICKY BLENDING POLITICS AND RELIGION AND PLUS MUIRU MIGHT HAVE BEEN A POPULAR FIGURE BUT HE WAS NOT WITHOUT HIS CONTROVERSIES. The great thing about living in a Democracy is that anybody can exercise their rights and participate in government. Well sometimes it works out, most times it does not though – love apparently did not Trump hate last year. Kenyans, naturally will not be left out of their own political process and Maina Njenga might be a changed man but rival bigwigs seem to have sensed some sort of threat from the former sect leader. We have had a few weirdos along our way to freedom.

oseph Hellon/Quincy Timberlake/ Finger of God

This was an unmitigated mess. Wherever the two characters and alleged cult leaders got the idea to run for public office is beyond anyone’s imagination. We also can’t forget to mention former KTN news anchor Esther Arunga who may have been going through some sort of brainwashing exercise throughout this period of time because she was all for this bizarre notion. It’s hard to imagine what would have happened to the country if these three were running it but we can get a little clue seeing as Quincy Timberlake is now in prison for killing his own son.

Kingwa Kamencu

At first the idea of a fresh energised and educated face entering the political arena with such a bang seemed great. The Oxford graduate who was in her late twenties during the political storm that she caused was on the hot ticket to stardom. Well she didn’t go very far in that respect, after failing to actually cash in on the promise. After ejecting herself from the race she was a constant figure in the media for a while before fading into

tabloid obscurity. From complaining about men randomly sliding into her DMS, lewd updates on her social media and releasing naked pictures of herself, Kingwa Kamencu has simply turned into a punchline that most people don’t even remember to joke about. JOSEPH HELLON

Pius Muiru

It’s already tricky blending politics and religion and Pius Muiru might have been a popular figure but he was not without his controversies. The Kuna nuru gizani champion allegedly raised hundreds of millions of shillings in an effort to secure his bid, he also happens to be one of the richest pastors in the country- running a TV ministry is apparently big business. Which raised concerns about the source of his wealth including some claims of swindling and conning churchgoers out of their money. Of course bado

DJ Khaled has incorporated Drake on his upcoming album Grateful, and while he’d like us all to believe everything is “top secret,” the super producer is sharing new details about the upcoming project via Snapchat. In a series of three snaps that Khaled later uploaded to Instagram, Khaled let fans know Champagne Papi was going to be featured on Grateful. “So Asahd, the vocals we’ve been waiting for…they came in,” said Khaled in the first snap, talking to his baby boy, who’s serving as executive producer of the LP. “But it’s top secret so we can’t let nobody know, ok?” In the second and third snaps, Khaled repeated the question “Did the Drake vocals come in yet?” to his co-producer, Ayo Juan. But according to Juan, “everything’s top secret.”

anzanian singer and actress Vanessa Mdee has been forced to cut short her shooting sessions in South Africa for TV series “Shuga” and is in Dar- es- salaam where she presented herself to police. The ‘dume suruali’ hit singer was summoned by Tanzania police in connection with drug use and trafficking. The Tanzanian government has recently intensified the fight against drugs and drug abuse with celebrities in Tanzania being targeted. Mdee has however said that she is innocent and reiterated that she is cooperating with the authorities to clear her name of any wrong doing.

Good Command of English language not intelligence Tanzanian music star Ali Kiba has hit back at critics who have trolled him for struggling with the Queen’s language. The singer in a radio interview in South Africa struggled to articulate issues in English opting to evade some questions or answering without reference to the question. Kiba has however hit back saying he grew up speaking Swahili and that has not hindered his success. He further adds that to him, a good command of the English language does not necessarily translate into intelligence.

THERE WILL PROBABLY BLOOD PUMPING THROUGH YOUR VESSELS AT EXCITING SPEEDS, WHICH MIGHT HEIGHTEN SEXUAL AROUSAL BUT IN MANY CASES IT REDUCES THE PERFORMANCE LEVEL IN BED.

makes you great at sex – The truth behind the myth

A

lcohol and sex many times go hand in hand and not always in a positive way. Alcohol makes us loose our inhibitions and does affect our judgment. But does it also enhance the sexual experience? For everything leading up to the act, maybe, but for the actual sex, no. There will probably be blood pumping through your vessels at exciting speeds, which might heighten sexual arousal but in many cases it reduces the performance level in bed. Have you ever awoken from a night of binge drinking and found yourself with injuries you can’t explain? Same thing. Alcohol lowers sensitivity, so you might be in the mood but really head nowhere. People are different

though and what might not work for you, might work out great for someone else. According to The Independent sex expert Dr Kat Van Kirk, believes alcohol can prevent premature ejaculation, improve circulation and act as an aphrodisiac. Which might be good news for one of the participants but imbibing alcohol can also cause vaginal dryness, so bad news for the other. Let’s also add on the potential risks that drunk sex poses, not using protection, sex injuries due to increased stamina and the general not really caring much. Alcohol is no alternative to real skill. Practice does make perfect after all.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

workout tactics that

T

just don’t work

here’s a lot of information out there that has to do with working out and much of it is not beneficial. Here are some things you should definitely avoid.

Sporadically working out will do the trick

WORKOUT

You know how it goes. You have a sudden burst of energy and decide you are on your way to get fit then two days later you are completely over it. It happens to the best of us but it’s not going to get you anywhere in the short or long run. Trying to lose weight, tone or just become fit takes a lot of hard work and dedication. You are either going to give it your all or just let sleeping dogs lie, but don’t give up.

Targeted fat burning

We’ve once or twice come across people who believe that just doing sit-ups is all you need towards the journey to a flatter stomach. That is wildly inaccurate. Losing weight is an all-round advancement. If you notice a loss or gain in one area of the body it is likely that you have gained or lost weight and fat from everywhere. It’s just the way the body works. You might be strengthening the muscles underneath the fat with crunches but you actually need to get moving to see the results.

Pushing yourself too soon

If you are new to working out it can be a bit intimidating seeing people at the gym. Lifting weights you could never imagine being able to bench-press and running on the treadmill at much faster speeds than you can achieve. It’s all good, we all have to start somewhere and although you might be raring to go, don’t exert yourself past your limits. You will end up injuring yourself.

●Avoid getting into direct contact with the water If the water is from a leak it could be teeming with pathogens and other nasty things. Wear rubber boots and gloves when handlings items that have come into contact with the water. Even water from rainfall is not completely safe, it probably travelled quite a distance to reach your house. So keep yourself covered. ●Make sure your children and/or pets are not playing in the water The kids might take this as an opportunity to mess around but keep them away from the deluge at all costs. If the house has an upper level keep them there until you are sure that you can move them out of the area safely. If the house

Homes are not supposed to be submersed in water but floods are beyond our control. If it just so happens that your home becomes the victim of a flash flood or poor plumbing here’s what you should do.

has a single level move them out once it’s safe. ●Assess the damage Take note of everything in the house that has taken a hit and write it down. Also locate all of your valuables and keep them safely locked away in a secure place. If any has received some water damage set those aside too. Take pictures if you can they may help you later on. ●Remove the water If the water is manageable gather up all your sweeping supplies and get to work. A water pump of course will be invaluable in this work. ●Call the insurance company It’s times like this that you realise how imperative insurance is. Call up the company and set up a meeting with an adjuster.

Soldiers eyeing rare victory as they visit Egypt’s Smouha sc WEDNESDAY MARCH 8, 2017

Ulinzi Stars are confident they can beat Egyptian side Smouha in the first round of the Caf Confederations Cup on Friday. Coach Benjamin Nyangweso is confident the soldiers will pull an advantageous results to brig to Nairobi from the volatile environment. The military side who went past Libya’s Al Hilal Benghazi in the initial round to book an appointment with the Egyptian outfit. Nyangweso says his team will definitely miss the services of striker John Makwatta, who quit the team, but he has faith in his squad. “We are going there to represent the country and we are going to give our best. A win will do us good but if we fail to get it then a draw will work for us, the main thing is getting a positive result that will help us progress to the next round of the competition,” Nyangweso said. “Makwatta is a good player and he will be missed but I believe the squad I have is very capable of giving us good results.” The club’s top scorer for the past

Ulinzi Stars eliminated Al Hilal Benghazi 5-4 on post much penalties after a 1-1 aggregate score. Friday’s game will be staged at the

Stern test as Dortmund welcome Benifica Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos says his side must play “300% better” in Wednesday’s Champions League showdown with Benfica. Benfica travel to Dortmund for the second-leg of their last-16 tie with a one-goal advantage courtesy of Kostas Mitroglou’s strike in Lisbon. But the Portuguese side have a record of 14 defeats and just two victories in 22 European games on German soil. “It would be very bad if we didn’t make it,” said Papastathopoulos. Dortmund will be without winger Marco Reus who tore his left hamstring in Saturday’s 6-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen. “I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed from the stands. I don’t think we have to change much - just score a few goals,” said Reus. Dortmund, who sit third in the Bundesliga, are also without longterm absentees Sven Bender, Sebastian Rode and Mario Gotze, who has been ruled out indefinitely with a metabolic disorder. Benfica’s Brazilian midfielder Filipe Augusto has shaken off an ankle injury and is fit for the tie.

Mission impossible as Barcelona welcome PSG Coach Luis Enrique believes Barcelona can “score six” to create Champions League history by overturning a four-goal deficit in their last 16 second-leg tie against Paris St-Germain. Barca suffered a 4-0 loss two weeks ago and are now focused on achieving what no other side has done before. “In 95 minutes, an infinite amount of things can happen. I’m convinced we’ll be close to qualifying,” he said. “That isn’t to say we will do it, but that we will be close.” He added: “When you are close, our confidence will soar and theirs could start to diminish. “If they can score four goals against us, we can score six.” The Spanish champions have scored 11 goals in their past two matches and conceded only one goal. They were back to their very best last Saturday as they defeated Celta Vigo 5-0, with Lionel Messi and Neymar scoring two wonderful goals. “We are aware that it is a difficult situation to turn the tie around, but in football nothing is impossible,” said Luis Suarez. “We have to be convinced that we can do it. If there is a team that can score four goals, I think it is Barcelona, with our philosophy of how to play and controlling the game.” Barcelona do not have any new injury worries for the match at the Nou Camp. Defenders Jeremy Mathieu and Aleix Vidal remain sidelined. PSG midfielders Adrien Rabiot, Angel Di Maria and Thiago Motta are in the squad having recovered from their respective injuries.

ULINZI STARS ARRIVE IN ALEXANDRIA EGYPT READY FOR SMOUHA SC IN A CAF MATCH

Brazil’s Chapecoense win Copa Libertadores debut Chapecoense, the Brazilian football team which lost most of their squad in an air crash in November, have won their first international match since the accident. The visitors beat Zulia 2-1 in the Venezuelan city of Maracaibo in their first ever tie in the Copa Libertadores, South America’s main regional tournament. The win puts them top of Group 7. The club only won promotion to Brazil’s top division in 2014. But they surprised everyone when they reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana last year. They were on their way to the first leg of that match when the plane went down near the Colombian city of Medellin; 71 people, including 19 players and staff, were killed. Only six people on board survived, including three players: goalkeeper Jackson Follmann, defender Neto and winger Alan Ruschel. Chapecoense included Neto and Ruschel in their squad for Tuesday’s match.

ayern Munich crushed Arsenal’s dreams of a historic Champions League night as Gunners fans led an anti-Arsene Wenger protest outside the Emirates. Ten-man Gunners were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season following a second-half capitulation against the Bundesliga giants. A debated decision in the 53rd minute shattered any hopes of the Gunners becoming the first side in Champions League history to overturn a four-goal deficit, having also

lost the first leg in Germany 5-1. They led through Theo Walcott’s stunning 20thminute goal, before Bayern were awarded a penalty that also resulted in the sending off of defender Laurent Koscielny. The France centre-back was initially shown a yellow card by referee Anastasios Sidiropoulos for his foul on Robert Lewandowski inside the area - but it was upgraded to a red once he decided Koscielny made no attempt to win the ball. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger looked perplexed by the sudden change of heart by the official. Lewandowski placed his spot-

kick beyond the reach of David Ospina to give Bayern a 6-2 aggregate lead and effectively kill off the tie. The home side then folded as Bayern scored four goals in 17 minutes. Arjen Robben robbed Alexis Sanchez of the ball and beat Ospina, before Douglas Costa made it 3-1 with a stunning solo goal. Fellow midfielder Arturo Vidal grabbed a late double, first with an impudent chip before slotting in from Costa’s square pass. If this was to be Wenger’s final outing in the Champions League with Arsenal then what an embarrassing final act.
