resident Uhuru Kenyatta today flew to Juba, South Sudan to attend an Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) mini-summit to witness the signing of a peace deal by President Salva Kiir. Mr Kiir is scheduled to sign the deal later

today, after he failed to do so last week in Ethiopia. The International community has put pressure on Kiir with both the US and the UN warning that they are ready to “act immediately” should he fail to sign the deal with rebels. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

We are done with TSC, teachers’ unions say Teachers unions have now declared as closed any negotiations between them and their employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on the implementation of their salary pay rise. Both the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) today announced that they will call for strikes if the pay increase is not

implemented by August 31, 2015. Although Knut attended a crisis meeting called by TSC today, Kuppet gave it a wide berth claiming it is a tactic to delay the pay implementation. “We will not engage in further negotiations. The government has four days to effect new pay for teachers or we call for a strike on September 1,” CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Kenya seeks enjoinment in Ruto’s appeal in ICC case WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2015

The government has said it will seek to be enjoined in an appeal challenging use of evidence of prior statements in the case against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Arap Sang. Attorney General Githu Muigai told Capital FM News that Trial Chamber V (a) botched a promise made to Africa that an amendment to Rule 68 of Rules of Procedure and Evidence would not be applied retrospectively. “We will seek to be enjoined even on the appeal filed by the Ruto defence because we think it is a very important question on how the court operates,” Prof Muigai opined. In November, 2013, a Kenyan delegation of top government officials including the Attorney General, Director of Public Prosecutions and Foreign Affairs CS Amina Mohamed put up a spirited effort to block passage of the procedural rule which would allow prior recorded statements being used in court. Kenya lobbied other African member states to reject the amendment. However, Kenya was later convinced to pass the amendment after a promise that Rule 68 would not be applied retrospectively. It was on that basis that together with other African countries, they supported the amendment. “Officials of the court who were the ones championing the reform of the rules undertook to every delegation they were selling the amendment to that this rule would not apply retroactively,” Muigai recalled. When ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda asked the court to allow her to use evidence of six witnesses who had recanted or withdrawn, it did not occur to the defence teams of Ruto and Sang or the Government of

Kenya that the court would actually violate the promise made to them during the 12th session of the ASP held at The Hague, Netherlands. “This comes as a great shock… it is a surprise. It is also acting in total violation of undertakings given to the state parties,” Muigai complained. According to him, the ruling was in contradiction of treaties in relation to application of amendments to rules and procedures that control them.

He argued that the ASP resolution contained an express waiver of the rule from ongoing proceedings with or without a promise. “The treaty is clear about the nonretro-activeness of any amended rules. No one – even without any undertakings to Kenya or to state parties the treaty itself prohibits the retro-activity of any rule amended during its pendency.” Korir Sing’Oei who is Legal Advisor, Executive Office of the Deputy President and who was part of the

delegation that represented Kenya during the 12th session of the ASP was dismayed that last week’s ruling undermined the good faith on which treaties are anchored on. “It’s in breach of trust. Treaties are based on good faith and this cannot be wished away. What the court has done is really to abuse our good faith,” he said. “When we were negotiating we were given full assurance that this will not apply on Kenyan cases.” In his view, the Trial Chamber’s

decision was ‘a slap on the face’ of Kenya but also a setback in honouring and respecting principles that other treaties are anchored on. During the 25th Africa Union Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa in June this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta termed the prosecution’s application seeking for the application of Rule 68 as a violation of the understanding reached at the ASP. “It is a very unfortunate ruling. It was not an assurance made to Kenya alone but to Africa. Africa through AU spoke about Rule 68 in July sessions in SA. It cautioned the court against applying Rule 68. What we have seen from the court is a direct attack to the entire continent of Africa,” Sing’Oei argued. Bensouda in her application argued that six of the witnesses who had recanted or withdrawn had been corrupted by persons acting on behalf of the accused persons. She said the evidence of the six witnesses was key in demonstrating to the court the full picture of the 2008 Post Election Violence and persons responsible for the attacks that left over 1000 people killed. With high expectations that the defence teams will move to the appeals chamber, interpretation of the amendment to Rule 68 remains controversial based on the agreement reached at the ASP and the dilemma of arguments of witness interferences presented to the court by the prosecution.

KQ aircraft resale ‘flopped over kickbacks’ - Kamanda Details are now emerging over how national carrier Kenya Airways lost over Sh13billion in an offer to purchase aircraft bought under the Mawingu project and which are now rendered redundant. During an appearance before the National Assembly Transport and Infrastructure committee and the Senate committee on Kenya Airways inquiry,

Acting transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the airline was now making fresh attempts to sell off at least four aircraft which were grounded as the costs of operating them were high. “We have spoken to the management and they are selling four aircraft; some of them 777 and others 737s. We are trying to see that this is done as quickly as possible

but chair you should know that selling an aircraft is not like selling a car, it takes a long time… this is coming at a time when most airlines are not doing well,” said Macharia. Transport Committee Chairman Maina Kamanda revealed that he was privy to information over how an offer to purchase the four aircraft had been rejected by the airline after the company

that had expressed interest declined to pay kickbacks to the tender committee. “You need to get the information right and get to know that the four aircraft at one time had been advertised for sale and got the highest bidder, but because some people who requested a commission did not get it, they cancelled the deal. They advertised it after a few months and got half

of what they had got at that time,” said Kamanda. Macharia said the matter was public knowledge but however declined to go into the details saying they were investigating it and within two weeks, the ministry would pronounce itself over what transpired. During an earlier appearance by the Kenya Airways management, the same issue emerged that the airline had

an initial offer of $322 million (Sh33 billion). However the airline’s Finance director Alex Mbugua said the best offer they had received now was 185 million dollars (Sh19 billion). Macharia said he was working with the National Treasury to investigate cases of financial impropriety as a forensic audit of the company’s books told a different tale adding those found guilty would be penalised. “The balance sheet has a lot of queries and need to be investigated; the assets and liabilities do not match the revenue,” said Macharia.

The internet has created a society of educated perverts The Internet has created a society of educated perverts in many developing countries, including Kenya, new research has revealed. Despite the fact that the world wide web has provided millions of people with access to what is possibly the world’s largest library, it has also turned others into a pack of insatiable deviants. People in emerging and developing nations agree that the increasing use of the internet has been a good influence in the realms of education, personal relationships and the economy, says a study published by leading research group, Pew Global. However, despite all the

benefits it has to offer, a majority of people argue that the internet is “a negative rather than a positive influence on morality.” More than 6 out of 10 people across 32 emerging and developing nations, including Kenya, say that the internet is a good influence on education. On the other hand, 4 out of 10 are convinced that the internet is having a negative effect on morality. Many blame this alleged phenomenon on the explicit content that it offers. Others have argued that the Internet has become a platform for infidelity, encourage people to seek extramarital affairs and multiple intimate relationships.

Rogue officers put on notice

Rogue police officers who commit crime and get away with it have no place in the service unit, Police Spokesman Charles Owino has said. Owino said there will be no more cover up of police officers who instead of protecting the public, turn against them and involve in acts which are contrary to the law. The police spokesman admitted that indeed the service has some officers that are bad and are tainting the image of others who are doing an exemplary job. “Police officers must respect the law just like the civilian, under my tenure as the police spokesman there will be no more cover up, we will expose them and interdict them upon conducting investigations,” Owino said. Owino who was reassigned to police headquarters as the Kenya Police spokesman early this month said he is determined to change the tainted police image even as he assured that security in the country will also improve as he has seen

The police spokesman also accused the public of breaking the law and later blame police officers for arbitrary arrest. “The public is also not giving the police easy time in serving them, majority break laws knowingly and later blame the police. Let’s not blame the police everyone must do his part,” Owino said. “Police do good work every day that goes unnoticed but just a single mistake gets blown out of context in the media,” Owino added. Alexander Forbes Kenya chief executive officer Sundeep Raichura attributes the fluctuating returns to the volatility of the investment markets, which include investment strategy and asset mix of the investment portfolio, prevailing market conditions, reserve policy, expense and profit margins as well as rates declared by other players in the industry. Deposit Administration Funds are mainly directed at retirement scheme trustees and sponsors and are investment vehicles that pension schemes and provident funds invest in to secure financial well-being of retirees.

Kuppet secretary General Akelo Misori (pictured above) told a press conference today. Knut’s Wilson Sossion who attended the meeting with TSC said it had been called to renew talks with their employer. He however said no talks took place. “We were not negotiating anything. They have to do everything to avert the strike,” he said as he came of the meeting. TSC had planned to use the opportunity to persuade the teachers to allow the schools re-open as negotiations go on. Among the fears of the ministry is the interference any strike is likely to cause for national examinations later in the year. But Mr Misori says exams are not the concern of teachers and that the ministry should instead discuss with Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) issues with the examinations body.

Polio vaccine for October The government is set to launch the second phase of polio vaccination campaign in the boarder counties at the end of October this year. The campaign, which targets, 1.5 million children under the age of five years will be carried out for one week. Head of Vaccines and Immunization at the Ministry of Health Ephantus Maree that Kenya’s neighboring countries that have weak health systems pose a major risk due to migration across porous borders. “We will do this for one week and we are targeting the most high risk populations and especially at the borders, because we understand what risk we are exposing ourselves at our borders,” he said. He added that the risk of a polio outbreak in Kenya is still high because only 1.2 million children out of the 1.5 million targeted for routine immunization in health facilities are reached.

Mugabe heckled in parliament

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was jeered by opposition MPs as he delivered his state of the nation address in parliament. The president was repeatedly drowned out as he delivered one of shortest ever state of the nation speeches, lasting less than 30 minutes. The opposition MPs sang protest songs against his 10-point plan to solve the country’s economic crisis. More than 20,000 people have lost their jobs in the past seven weeks.

Mandela grandson in rape case given bail

A South African court has granted bail to one of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons who has been charged with raping a 15-yearold girl earlier this month. His lawyers said he did not want to be tried as a “Mandela” but as a “normal person”. He cannot be named until he formally pleads to the charge. The 24-year old is accused of raping the teenager in the toilets of a bar in Johannesburg. His bail was set at $535 (about Sh55 000) and he was ordered to surrender his passport. During the hearing, his lawyers disputed the age of his accuser, arguing that she was 16 and that sex was consensual.

Clashes in CAR kills 20 people

At least 20 people have been killed in days of sectarian clashes in the Central African Republic, and 15 others have been injured. The violence in the central Bambari region started last Thursday when a Muslim youth was killed by members of a Christian militia. The United Nations peacekeeping mission has intervened. Tens of thousands of people have died in sectarian violence in the Central African Republic, sparked by a coup in 2013.

France train attack ‘was well prepared’ An attempted attack by a heavily armed man on a train in France last week was premeditated and well planned out, according to a French prosecutor. Ayoub El-Khazzani, 25, was carrying 270 bullets for his assault rifle and a bottle of petrol, prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters on Tuesday. The Moroccan’s phone showed that he had watched a jihadist video shortly before launching the attack, Mr Molins added. Prosecutors have now filed formal charges against him. Mr Khazzani is accused of carrying out a “targeted and premeditated” jihadist attack.

Women in polygamy suffer more abuses, says study

A study by a US researcher has indicated that women in polygamous marriages are more likely to undergo through physical abuse compared to those in monogamous marriages. The research furthers indicates that abuse rates were also reported to be substantially higher for Kenyan women who say their partners are alcoholics than for those who do not make that assertion. A team of US academics led by University of Kansas economics Prof Elizabeth Asiedu analyzed the results of that survey along with similar data collected in Ghana, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Abuse of wives was found to be more common in Kenya than in any of the three other African countries. The overall rate was 28 percent for Kenyan women, compared to 13 percent in Ghana, 14 percent in Malawi and 21 percent in Zimbabwe. In polygamous marriages--the same figure as in Malawi. The rate of polygamy was found to be slightly higher in Ghana, 17 percent of marriages--and lower in Zimbabwe--10 percent. Women in polygamous marriages are more likely to be abused because they tend to have less power and are more dependent on their partners than are monogamous women, said

Louisiana Tech University sociology Prof Christobel Asiedu, another of the study’s authors. About one-third of the Kenyan women surveyed said their husbands are alcoholics. That’s roughly the same rate as in Ghana and Malawi and lower than in Zimbabwe, where 45 percent of women surveyed said they have alcoholic partners. The study, which was presented in Chicago last Sunday at the Ameri-

can Sociological Association annual meeting, also found that Kenyan and Zimbabwean women with higher levels of education were at less risk of physical abuse from their husbands. “The assumption is that women who are more educated are more likely to be economically independent and are more likely to have power in relationships,” Christobel Asiedu said. But the study also found that level of education had no effect on incidence of abuse in Ghana and Malawi.

Wives in Kenya with jobs outside the home had lower rates of abuse than did those without jobs. But no correlation between employment and abuse rates was found in the three other countries. One of the study’s goals was to show that risk factors for domestic violence differ throughout Africa, Christobel Asiedu noted. She said she hoped policymakers will keep that finding in mind when drafting preventive measures.

China has sought to calm its panic-stricken stock markets by cutting interest rates and loosening constraints on bank lending after a second day of plunging share prices. The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) reduced the one-year lending rate to 4.6 percent in a clear signal that it was prepared to head off a repeat of the stock market crash that hit the country in June. The benchmark Shanghai Composite fell by 7.6% on Tuesday, bringing its loss in the last two days to more than 15 percent. The central bank also cut the one-year deposit rate to 1.75 percent in an effort to persuade Chinese savers to spend cash hoarded in the country’s banks. China’s fifth interest rate cut since November lifted global markets, which recovered much of their losses after plummeting in response to China’s Black Monday. Shares in Shanghai swung between sharp gains and losses, showing no sign that China’s cutting interest rates late Tuesday would lead to a broader rally. The main index fell nearly 4 percent before recovering and was up 2.8 percent by early afternoon. Global markets have been tumultuous in recent days as fears have mounted about China’s weakening economy and its leadership’s ability to handle a slowdown. The recent Chinese stock rout is now rattling markets from Tokyo to London to New York. The sell-off has erased all of this year’s gains on stocks in the United States and China. So far, there were no clear signs that the easing of the rout in some markets on Tuesday would lead to a broader recovery. Around Asia, markets were mixed in afternoon trading on Wednesday. After two consecutive days of 8% losses—the Chinese stock market’s biggest two-day plunge in nearly two decades—the fortunes of those punters who are still holding shares are decidedly smaller than they were at the end of last week. Big falls have become the norm for Chinese shares over the past two months, but Tuesday’s tumble was especially notable. The Shanghai Composite Index, the country’s main index, has now broken below the 3,000 level. Shares may well have quite a bit farther to fall, for they are still up by a third over the past year. But to be back into the range of the 2,000s, the level at which they had languished for the previous half-decade, is to mark a remarkably rapid crash back to earth.

The August angst, sparked by concerns about the Chinese economy and the country’s stock market crash, and amid uncertainty about the timing of a US rate hike, shows no sign of abating after several dramatic sessions. Beijing’s attempts to boost confidence by easing monetary policy late on Tuesday seems to have failed, only succeeding in delivering twitchier trading. The Shanghai Composite at first fell 3.8 per cent, taking its losses to 24.9 per cent over just five days and down 44.8 per cent since the bull market peak hit in June. The mood improved in China’s afternoon session and the SCi jumped 4.3 per cent, helping underpin a rally across Asian bourses. But another sell-off ensued and the SCi fell 1.3 per cent to close at its lowest since December. That dive came too late for Japan’s Nikkei 225, which followed its 4 per cent loss on Tuesday, with a 3.20 per cent recovery to 570.13

GS1 Kenya, a global barcode provider company and tracing services for consumer products, wants to make locally-manufactured alcohol traceable in making Kenya’s genuine alcohol from getting counterfeited. “GS1 will first need to identity and verify the raw materials used to make the alcohol and ensure that they are in good condition to process alcohol,” explained the company Chairman, Sospeter Kioko in a recent announcement. According to him the firm shall identify whether the raw materials are the proper ingredients for

making alcohol while upon verification of the ingredients, GS1 will then investigate the wholesalers and retailers who will be selling the alcohol. They will determine whether or not the traders are licensed to do distribute the goods and whether they have the proper equipment for storing the alcohol. “This will helps us monitor the movement of the alcohol so as to ensure that it is safe and the product is kept safe while the consumers are safeguarded too,” said Kioko. The final stage of identification will be checking the mode of transport used to move the

alcohol from one point to the next one to ensure that its safety is retained. The initiative comes at a time when Kenya is increasingly becoming an emerging market for global alcohol brands. “By making alcohol traceable, we will be safeguarding the genuine alcohol in the market, which will in turn ensure that Kenyans drink quality alcohol,” added Kioko. It will also make manufacturers liable in case consumers are harmed by the alcohol. MORE ON THIS STORY www.capitalfm.co.ke

for all and sundry’s viewing, as well as Huddah’s mobile phone number. None of the two socialites have commented on the hacking and photo leakage incident, and it is not clear whether Vera was the mastermind or whether she opted to take the high road on this one. Knowing the two ladies though, one can only sit back and grab some popcorn because a juicy show is brewing here, just you

wait until Vera gets back from her ‘world tour’. Not that their petty attention seeking drama adds value to our lives, but seriously, what would we do without Vera and Huddah? Although they appear to have major differences in opinion, they have one similarity: We have to give the two girls credit for their impeccable taste in fashion, at least when they decide to actually wear clothes!

SOCIALITE BEEF:

K

enya has more in common with America than just President Barrack Obama. While America has Kim Kardashian and Amber Rose, we have Huddah Monroe and Vera Sidika who have managed to keep the socialite drama in Kenya alive. Although Huddah

and Vera rarely fight over men like Kim and Amber, the two never lack something to feud over. Both being selfproclaimed (drama) queens, Huddah and Vera attract spectacle all around and when their current beef loses flavor, they look for ways to heat things up. The two girls started brawling back in 2013 and judging by the

unkind words they hurl at each other every now and then, it is difficult to believe that they were once inseparable friends. 2015 has seen the worst of catfights between the two and especially in the period since July where things have become pretty intense. In July, Huddah posted a photo of an extremely green farm with rosy fresh produce in display, claiming that that the farm belongs to her and it is the source of her livelihood. Of course, no one believed her but the trolling didn’t start until Vera came out to say what everyone else was thinking out loud, with hard evidence that the photo by Huddah had actually been lifted off the internet. Surprisingly, Huddah did not issue a comeback…at the time. Last weekend however, she took to the internet to attack Vera, asserting that Vera was persistent on pimping her out to Nigerian men even though Huddah had no interest in such deals. Huddah further shared private messages between Vera and herself as proof of her accusations. Hours later, her account was reportedly hacked by Vera (as the hacker identified themselves) who leaked a nude bust photo of Huddah

emember that old car you have dumped somewhere in your compound because driving it around would be an embarrassment? Well, you can actually use that car, or at least parts of it, to stand out from your peers by demonstrating creativity. Although the engine block coffee table requires some welding, the project is relatively easy to undertake since most engine block models are built in the spread-arm design. This means you can even

place a glass or wooden surface directly on the engine block and use it as a table, but making minor modifications for enhanced support would be a better idea. The first step involves extracting the engine block from your old car, disassembling it and cleaning the oil and grease off it. Next, weld several pistons into the engine block arms. These pistons will act as the essential support pillars for your coffee table glass surface. You can also weld some leg support at the

bottom of the engine blo ease movement in the fu Next, paint or polish th engine block to eradicate mechanical look and infus ambience of modern livi Finally, place the glas onto the newly built sup using adhesive rubber arrest any movement ar support. a

lthough recent digital developments have come with a myriad benefits especially entertainment wise, many home owners will attest to the fact that modern digital entertainment devices play a big role in messy appearance of homes, especially the living room. Everyone wants to own large televisions, woofers, and gaming sets, but they try to squeeze all these items together with furniture in the living room, the result being the house looking like a warehouse. This has prompted architects and developers to come up with the home theatre concept, which is basically a room in the house set aside for the purpose of entertainment. In the developed world, home owners take the concept of home theatres very seriously, with some creating actual theatres with rowed seats and wall length screens as well as amplified surround sound and lighting effects. While residents of developing nations may not have financial resources to build such magical rooms, there is a cheaper option in the form of media rooms. Media rooms are basically small scale home theatres where home entertainment activities are rounded up. Here, one member of the family can watch TV while another plays on the computer and another has fun with game stations et al. Media rooms are essential both for decluttering and also for reducing noise in the living room where home owners host guests for serious or friendly conversation. With a media room, especially one that has been sound proofed, you reduce chances of disruption and distraction by noise from home entertainment devices. If you have your TV, computer, game set and sound system clamped into a wall unit in the living room, consider converting one of the idle rooms in your house into a media room and experience the difference.

woRk out It is important to hit the gym in tip top shape but what can you indulge in guilt free before you swat buckets? Smoothies Smoothies are great before a workout because they are not too filling. They are also time friendly and healthy at the same time. It is always best if you can make your own but if you are unable to, just pick one up on your way to the gym. For a homemade smoothie use your favorite fruit, a cup of plain yoghurt and some granola for thick consistency. Oats Oats gradually release carbohydrates into your

bloodstream because they are full of fiber and as a result, you become energetic throughout your workout. You should take your oats approximately 30 minutes before your workout. Bananas Bananas are rich in digestible carbohydrates and potassium. They are nature’s power bars. Since the body does not store potassium for too long, a medium banana before a workout keeps the nutrient levels on a high.

Apples For those with sweet teeth, apples are a great pick because they are full of vitamins minerals and antioxidants, which will keep your energies on a high. Whole grain bread Whole grain bread is a good source of carbohydrates. One can decide to add jam or honey and for those who would want more, a hardboiled egg is the perfect top up. Eat this approximately 45 minutes before your work out.

WORKOUT

You know you have the wrong when…

You do not know your foot type Everyone should know if they are flatfooted or if they have a high arc. There are different shoes designed for the two types of feet and if you wear a wrong one, it may affect your running. If you are not sure, make sure you ask the shop attendant when purchasing. Outer sole wear Make sure you look at the heel and the fore foot on the outer sole of your running shoes. If your shoes wear out just within a few weeks of purchase, it means that they might have been the wrong shoes for you. You bought them because

they were on sale Just like health, it is important to invest in our fitness. Just because a shoe is labeled running shoes does not mean that they are good for you. Make sure you purchase your running gear from a sports shop because they only stock the best. You have pain or injuries Pain is always an indication that something is not right. When you have pain or injury when you have not overdone your

work out, then the shoes you are wearing are definitely the wrong shoes. You run in the same sneakers that you use around the house Usually, running shoes should just be that. Don’t put on an old pair of shoes that you use for other chores around the house and try running in them. Shoes without proper cushioning are the source of injury and pain.

CS Amina woos Swedish investors Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed has encouraged Swedish investors to deepen their ties with Kenya by venturing into agroprocessing, which she says will generate revenue given its export potential. Mohamed said that the move would support Kenya’s efforts towards bridging trade deficits with other countries, including Sweden. Speaking during a meeting with Ms. Isabela Lövin, Minister for International Development Cooperation of Sweden, in Stockholm, the Cabinet Secretary said Kenya is Sweden’s third-largest trade partner in Africa but faces a huge trade imbalance. “In 2014, Kenya’s exports to Sweden amounted to

Sh2.8 billion while imports were worth Kshs 6.3 billion, resulting in a massive trade deficit of Sh3.5 billion,” noted the Ambassador. The CS has therefore called for more Swedish investments in Kenya in the area of value addition for export. “For us to benefit more from international trade, our exports must increasingly shift from raw materials to processed products through higher value addition. Investments in agricultural start-ups, agribusiness and agro-processing will yield attractive returns for investors and at the same time facilitate job and wealth creation in the country,” said the Cabinet Secretary. The Cabinet Secretary urged

Sweden to support Africa’s agenda in the ongoing World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations for a level playing field and the elimination and significant reduction of trade-distorting subsidies.“African countries’ investments in agriculture have been sinking in a huge black hole, because these legitimate investments cannot compete with distorting subsidies derived from the current Agreement on Agriculture regime.” Meanhwhile, Ms. Isabela said Sweden will continue to provide support to Kenya in the areas of trade, infrastructure, climatic change and in peace and security initiatives in the country and across the region.

TPS Eastern Africa signs for Sh2.1 million Proparco loan Hotelier TPS is set to receive Sh 2.1 million loan from French development institution Proparco to redevelop and refurbish its properties in Kenya. TPS manages 15 hotels and resorts across East Africa under the Serena brand name where the said funds would support the growth of its business in Kenya through refurbishment starting early 2016. “PROPARCO is honoured to support a stakeholder like TPS that has risen to the challenge of promoting sustainable and culturally sensitive tourism in under-served regions.” Said Proparco CEO Claude Périou. The kitty will account for new

conference and banqueting facilities, refurbished bedrooms and public area all in phases. According to the managing Director Serena Hotels Mahmud Janmohamed, through contribution to local authority, good governance, training skilled man power and involvement in craft industry places Serena hotels priority on the hiring and training citizens for employment at all levels. “Proparco’s long term relationship with TPS Serena includes shareholding and equity participation which will add 32 new rooms, food and beverages and meeting facilities during 2015 and

2016,” he said. The move comes as the country is revamping its tourism sector that has been hard hit by travel advisories issued by its key source markets owing to attacks by the Al Shabaab militia where the firm recorded a net loss of Sh 139 million in the first quarter this year compared to Sh 58 million net profit posted over same period of 2014. According to Périou, tourism as an industry is a major economic growth driver, creator of employment and an effective tool for local development and an essential to a country’s attractiveness and ability to draw foreign investment.

Uchumi set for turnaround with Kipng’etich as new CEO The Chief Operating Officer at Equity Bank, Julius Kipngetich has been given a new mantle as Uchumi’s new CEO in a move that is expected to boost the company’s earnings. It has been revealed that his appointment may be part of a strategic move to bolster shareholder confidence as he raises prospects for improved performance within the company. “There is a business strategy review process going on,” Uchumi’s media consultant, Kepha Bosire reveled to Reuters. Kipngetich is expected to outperform his predecessor, who revived the retail chain in 2006. “There is a lot of work going on to try and improve stocks in the shops. There is also a reorganisation to try and get the right people on board to drive the business,” Bosire noted.

Kipngetich joined Equity after a successful career as the Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Wildlife Service, where he served for eight years. “Mark my words, Uchumi will be back.” Kipng’etich said in an exclusive interview with X-News Business. He was the Managing Director of Investment Promotion Centre, according to a statement from Equity Bank. Uchumi’s new CEO is a member of the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) and serves on the Boards of several reputable institutions, including the Kenya Forest Service. His selection follows the appointment of former Naivas Supermarkets Retail Business Executive Willy King’ara, who will take over as Uchumi’s new Chief Operating Officer (COO).

WEATHERFORECAST

DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 A friend or colleague may pay you back a small sum of money that’s owed to you, Capricorn. You’ll be thrilled, but you might feel a little guilty that you plan to spend it on something frivolous instead of putting it toward your bills. This isn’t worth the guilt. Go for it! AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Your home may seem lonely today, Aquarius, and love may seem to be absent. A family member, perhaps your love partner, could be away for the night, making the place seem far colder and emptier than it is. This isn’t a good night to stay home. Go out and visit a friend or go to a movie.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Are you preoccupied today, Pisces? Something that means a lot to you could require some careful consideration so you might be quieter than usual. Loved ones may think that you’re ill, upset, or even angry. Talk to them about what’s on your mind. Let them know why you’re quiet. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Money worries may plague you today, Aries. There might not be any real reason. You may just be fretting over possible troubles that could come up. This is a pointless exercise. Cross that bridge when you come to it. Take steps to avoid this contingency if you wish, but don’t waste time worrying.

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 A friend could seem distant today, Taurus, and probably won’t be communicating with you much. Don’t jump to the conclusion that your friend is upset with you. If anything, this person is probably worried about his or her job. Just be your usual friendly self, don’t push, and go about your business. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 You may wonder if there’s something wrong in this person’s life. Perhaps you’d better give your friend a call. You’ll probably find out that whatever is troubling him or her is minor and nothing that can’t be dealt with. Anyway, it will be good to catch up! CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 Is this causing you to worry about your investments? Relax! The situation is likely temporary, and your stocks and bonds will probably regain their former value, if not surpass it. However, this isn’t a good day to make new investments or even to open a bank account. Wait a few days. LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Your love partner may be experiencing some minor conflicts with colleagues today, Leo, and may seem distant and preoccupied. Just make it clear that you’re there if needed and then do something else. Your beloved may have to come to terms with this alone. VIRGO Aug 23-Sep 21 Avoid coffee and other stimulants. Try to sleep in if you can. Too much stress in your life certainly isn’t helping. This malaise could pass by noon, but if you’ve been doing this a lot lately, you need to ask yourself why and find a way to quit doing it. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 You will experience a lot of sensual passion, so an intimate evening together is definitely called for if you can arrange it. If it isn’t possible, don’t jump to the conclusion that your friend doesn’t desire you anymore. If your friend claims to be busy, it’s probably true. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Today the walls may seem to be closing in around you, and you’re anxious to get out for a while, Scorpio. Your significant other could want nothing more than to stay in. Don’t let this turn into a major issue. Find a compromise. Go out to dinner and then come home and watch TV. SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21 Some wonderful news may come to you today, Sagittarius, and this could send you into such excitement that it’s difficult to concentrate on the situation at hand. This is OK for a while. Your friends and loved ones will probably understand. Take a walk and work off the excitement.

YOURSAY Pope is no climate expert When did the pope become an expert on the climate? What business does he have declaring that climate change is caused by man’s actions? The climate has been changing over the millennia, even

before humans inhabited this Earth. The climate changed even before the industrial age. This has been carefully documented by scientists who have studied the Earth’s core. Only God and Mother Nature

52 years of independence and nothing to show have domain over this Earth. The pope is not God, nor is he all-knowing. However, it seems he is willing to engage in the game of dishonest political maneuvers. — Chris Gatua, Nairobi

Our ministers should be sincere The sugar deal that Kenyan signed with Uganda during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s three-day official visit to Kampala has brought to the fore the insincerity among our Cabinet Secretaries. While Mr Kenyatta has acknowledged the signing of the deal, Cabinet Secretaries Amina Mohamed (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) and Adan Mohamed (Agriculture) have vehemently denied that any deal was signed. In his address to a gathering of regional delegates at KICC just

two days after he returned from Entebe, Mr Kenyatta told off opposition chief Raila Odinga that the deal was good and that it was “economical”. National Assembly’s Majority Leader Aden Duale who was among MPs on the President’s entourage has also acknowledged on national television that a deal was signed. Why then are the Cabinet secretaries denying this fact? Who should we trust between the ministers and the President? — Obuya Obuya, Ruaraka

Do we have ‘much’ milk to exchange for sugar? Somebody listening to the tendentious KenyaUganda sugar deal from the other shore will erroneously conclude that Kenyans, like the Biblical Israel, sit by the meat and milk pots all day long, eating and drinking to the full, but do we? Bilateral trade deals are good, especially between neighbouring nations since it fosters genial relationship, but I think it would be

prudent to barter meat and milk for sugar only when the natives have plethora of the said commodities beyond their consumption. The irony is that average Kenyan men and women lives on ‘strong’ tea from Monday to Monday and keep the week going by feeding on ‘sukuma wiki’ until the next Christmas because milk and meat are unaffordable. — Phabian Paul Jr, Nairobi

IGAD has failed to deliver on S.Sudan crisis It was great of Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta to urge South Sudanese leaders and citizens currently living in Kenya, to come back home and help in rebuilding and restoring peace in the country. However, from inception of this man made catastrophe which engulfed the whole country (South Sudan), there was a national call for

peace which was misplaced and entrusted to be mediated by East Africa regional bloc known as IGAD assuming that durable and lasting peace solutions would be found. IGAD fell short of its responsibilities and obligations to address the root causes of the conflict. — Malek Cook-Dwach, S.Sudan

52 years on since Kenya attained independence and yet we have ‘nothing’ to be proud of. We are still faced with the same issues our founding fathers highlighted as drawbacks to economic

development: ignorance, poverty, corruption and tribalism reign supreme even now. Why then should we fool ourselves that we are making progress? Still, our children

cannot afford basic education even though the NARC government made it free to all when it took over power in the year 2003. — Titiya Ommilah, Nairobi

IAAF to conduct injuries and illness surveillance study during Beijing meet On the occasion of the IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015 the IAAF will once again conduct a comprehensive Injuries and Illnesses Surveillance Study. Beijing will represent the fifth occasion where the IAAF has employed an Injuries and Illnesses

Surveillance Study at the biennial World Championships, the pinnacle competition of the IAAF World Athletics Series. The study, which is in line with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission efforts, is performed in cooperation

with the Athletics Research Center coordinated at Linköping University (Sweden). An Injuries and Illnesses Surveillance Study was first put into place during the 11th edition of the IAAF World Championships in Osaka 2007 and has been repeated in Berlin 2009, Daegu 2011, and Moscow 2013. Similar studies have also been completed at numerous other IAAF competitions including editions of the IAAF World Indoor, IAAF World Junior and IAAF World Youth Championships. The IAAF has recently published papers summarizing the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals (Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine and British Journal of Sports Medicine). It is noteworthy to mention that between 10-14 out of every 100 competing athletes suffered a sports injury during the previous IAAF World Championships and, on average, while nearly seven out of every 100 competing athletes suffered an illness during Berlin 2009, Daegu 2011 and Moscow 2013. The IAAF is part of the IOC Injury Study Group that has set the basis for injury and illness surveillance in Olympic sports. The IAAF Medical and Anti-Doping Commission is committed to making our sport safer for our athletes and is increasingly emphasising the protection of athletes’ health.

Bett puts AK on notice with rare gold win His name was nowhere when the list of favourites for the 400m men hurdles world title was written or read in the run-up to the Beijing IAAF World Championships. Now, Nicholas Bett has made himself known after his outstanding Day Four performance when he gave Kenya the first gold medal at any race below 800m at the grandest stage of all on Tuesday. His 47.79 world winning time was a new national record, all the more overwhelming considering he was running in the unwanted lane 9. He obliterated the previous record held by

Eric Keter that stood for 22 years by 0.44 seconds. “I decided to run very fast because when I slowed down in the semis, it was hard for me to clear some of the hurdles. Hurdles is not an easy event and I gave it my best and I’m happy and proud to be the first Kenyan to win this event at the World Championships. “I dedicate this to my twins, a boy and a girl and I hope it will motivate other short distance athletes not to lose hope and make Athletics Kenya to take hurdles more seriously,” Bett said after the race. “I’m happy for David Rudisha but the

performance of the day for Kenya is surely Bett’s victory in the 400m hurdles. No one would have thought a Kenyan can win a short distance race, let alone the hurdles. “This means we need to rethink how we prepare for next year’s Rio Olympics if you consider gold could come from Javelin. It is my hope Athletics Kenya will take this as the chance to overhaul the sport and invest more in events we are not used to winning,” Brother Colm O’Connell, coach to men 800m record holder, told Capital Sport.

Ndiku to face Farah in Saturday’s 5,000m final Caleb Mwanganngi Ndiku (pictured) and British Mo Farah will for the first time face Moh Farah the world championship men’s 5,000m final this Saturday in Beijing China. Ndiku, 2014 Diamond Race winner and Isaiah Kiplagat Koech both booked their places in Saturday’s final despite finishing a distant fourth and 10th respectively in heat two. Ndiku who currently holds the Sports Personality (SOYA) awards title timed 13:19.58 while Koech clocked 13:23.51 but still managed to sail through by virtue of being among the fastest five losers. Heat two was characterized by some ugly scenes after Farah who claimed his sixth successive global title when he won 10,000m gold at the weekend, recovered

from a stumble to clock 13:19.44 behind Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, who has the world leading time this year of 13:19.38 While all eyes will be on world’s fastest man this year, the race will be pitting two top runners, Farah against Ndiku who has been anticipating for a race with the Olympic champion. Farah, 32 was touched on the back by Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed but just managed to stay on his feet. Ahmed finished third but was initially disqualified by officials, only to be reinstated after a protest. Koech, world 5000m bronze medallist also qualified to the finals after finish among the five non-automatic qualifiers alongside including Rupp and Turkey’s European indoor 3000m champion Ali Kaya. Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet

posted a slower 13:45.00 in the first heat ahead of Ben True who crossed the line in 13:45.09 while Edwin Soi finished third in heat one but his time of 13:45.28 was slower than heat 2 number 10, automatically knocking him out alongside compatriot Emmanuel Kipsang who also missed the final slot.

ALL IN VAIN: Joyce Zakary of Kenya competes in the Women’s 400 metres heats during day two of the 15th IAAF World Athletics Championships Beijing 2015 at Beijing National Stadium on August 23, 2015 in Beijing, China. INSET: Francisca Koki at the event.

Bad news as Zakary, Koki fail doping tests

J

oyce Zakary, 400m Kenyan record holder and African 400m hurdles silver medalist Francisca Koki have failed doping tests in Beijing, China. Kenya’s Sports website Sportsnewsarena. com broke the devastating news, which came barely four hours after Nicholas Bett won Kenya’s first gold in the men’s 400m hurdles. The two leading Kenyan sprinters both tested positive for an unknown substance though it is most likely to be Nandrolone. The 29-year-old Zakari may have been informed of the result prior to the semifinal which saw her pull out of the race despite topping her heat in 50.41 seconds and was primed to be one of the finalists in the women’s 400m. If the doping allegations stand, Zakari’s national record of 51.14 she posted last month during the national trials which erased 31 years record posted by Rose Waitherea (51:56) may also be nullified. Koki on the hand was washed out in her qualifying heat finishing a distant seventh in 58.96 the second slowest time from the heats. It was way off her personal best, the

Kenyan record she set last year at the African championships in Morocco. Koki too may lose her national record, also posted at in July after lowering 24 years old record by Rose Tata Muya (55.94). Joseph Kinyua, the team manager said he was only informed during the technical meeting that: “She told the coach she had issues with IAAF.” Seven years ago, Zakari’s Kenya Prisons teammate Elizabeth Muthoka, the then national champion was banned for two years after she tested positive for Nandrolone. Muthoka had been tested at the 2008 national championships and was selected for the Beijing Olympics after she lowered the long standing national record to 50.8 seconds. Her performances were cancelled soon after and she was banned for two years. The two failed tests put the spotlight back on Team Kenya whose preparations have been clouded by controversy following recent media reports on doping in Germany and England. The reports allege that doping continues in Kenya and that there was widespread corruption within the Kenyan set-up to cover-up positive tests.
