Lapsset Director-General Sylvester Kasuku that the city resorts will have five-star hotel facilities, national parks, golf-courses, leisure parks theatres and amusement parks. He explained that the resort cities will boost business in the country and the region. They will attract

Isilolo Deputy Governor Mohamed Guleid, through the The Government of Kenya Communication Channel, the Nexus, said that The people of Isiolo had consented to the construction of the resort city. “An international airport is due for completion in August this year. This will boost tourism and create jobs for the local people,” said Guleid. the area’s livestock farmers. “This will create huge trade among the people. The Government will build a dam to supply water for livestock and domestic use.” In Turkana, the resort city will take advantage of its historical background as the cradle of mankind. The Lake Turkana beach, sun-bathing, fishing and warm climate will also contribute to the attractiveness of the city. “Rich cultural festivals and national parks such as Sibiloi, the

South Island and Central Island, and the vast oil deposits in the regioncomplete the picture,” the Lapsset booklet says. The Lamu Resort City is viewed as the launch pad of the Lapsset corridor project. It will host three-tier ports, an oil refinery, an international convention centre, a cultural city and an amusement park.

Kamau denies graft charges Suspended Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau has appeared in court for abuse of office charges. Kamau was taken to the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) offices at Integrity Centre for processing before he could plead to the abuse of office charges. He later returned to court where he denied the charges levied against him. This follows a directive by Justice Mumbi Ngugi that he plead to the charges after he moved to court seeking orders to block his arrest and

prosecution. The Judge ordered Kamau to take a plea and apply for bond, assuring that the case will not proceed until Tuesday next week, when she will issue a ruling on his application. In his application, Kamau accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of usurping the powers of the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission, in ordering an investigation against him. Kamau is accused of colluding with a contractor to change a road design in Kimilili, leading to the embezzlement of public funds.

I AM NOT GUILTY: Michael Kamau (FAR RIGHT) denied to the corruption charges levied against him.

One of the buildings was already sinking and had cracks running from the floor to the walls and tiles on the floor had come off. The demolition was conducted in the presence of heavy security and County officers. Overseeing the exercise was the officer in charge of operations, Kiprono Koech. The County government has so far audited 4,000 buildings and declared 55 unfit for occupation.

CARTOONSPEAK Kenya is not prepared to deal with the effects of climate change From torrential rains to harsh, biting drought, Kenyans have begun to feel the effects of adverse climatic conditions. A survey from the Climate and Development Knowledge Network states that a majority of Kenyans are already experiencing the “catastrophic effects of climate change.” In a study that gauged the opinions of thousands of citizens it was established that Kenyan farmers and agriculture officials need to prepare for a “possible geographic shift in maize production as climate change threatens to make some areas of the country much less productive for cultivation.” Climate change will, at the same time, make other areas of the country more maize- Recent studies have found that Kenyan farm-

ers, accounting for more than 2 thirds of the country’s labor force may thrive in the face of climate change. As long as farmers adapt to these changes, the agricultural sector could do better than ever before. With innovations like greenhouse farming and the adoption of hardy, weather-resistant crops, growers may find climate change to be more of a blessing than a curse. However, this only applies if the right policies are implemented and the right steps are taken. “As long as we offer farmers the right services and policies now, Kenya can make a major transformation in its ability to cope with the changing climate,” explained Timothy Thomas, a research fellow at IFPRI and co-author of the analysis.

More than 20 workers are unaccounted for after a building under construction collapsed in Kisumu yesterday. The building, a proposed shopping mall in the expansive Manyatta slums, had reached the third floor before it came tumbling down. Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma and his deputy Ruth Odinga visited the scene moments after the collapse of the building. At least 15 people had been rescued from the proposed shopping mall by midnight. Eight of those rescued, among them a school pupil, were rushed to hospital in critical condition. A worker who was pulled out of the rubble unhurt said the building appeared stable before its collapse.

Uhuru battles insecurity nightmare in the north: As President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government approaches midterm, the demand to restore security in parts of the country reeling from banditry and terrorism ranks high on his priorities. Liberty launches life insurance product that extends cover to parents-in-law Liberty Life Assurance this week launched a new funeral product that allows customers to include their parents and parents in law on the cover. Under Liberty Life’s product, dubbed “Legacy Plan”, the insured can extend life insurance cover to their parents, who must be aged below 75 years, for as low as

Sh260 in monthly premiums. The Legacy Plan, which is an enhancement on the firm’s existing “Msiba Plan”, will be offered at three benefit levels. The levels include Silver, Gold and Platinum, depending on the customer’s preferred benefit level of Sh100,000, Sh200,000 and Sh500,000 respectively, the insurer has said.

The plan may be taken to cover an individual or a family of up to six children in addition to the parents. “We are happy to offer Kenyans a product that is a tailored response to real needs,” said Managing Director Abel Munda, during the launch at Liberty House yesterday.

‘African Davos’ meeting to focus on continent’s upbeat economic future Growing optimism over Africa’s economic future is set to draw more than 1,250 delegates from governments and international corporations to a forum in Cape Town. The World Economic Forum has said that an ongoing three-day event dubbed the “African Davos”, will bring together public and private business leaders. Davos refers to an annual meeting of global political and business leaders, though the name originates from a municipality in Switzerland where WEF officials convene every year. Africa’s meeting will serve as an offshoot of the annual WEF meeting that takes place in the Swiss resort of Davos, as the annual event celebrates its 25th anniversary.

SAN FRANCISCO BECOMING TOO EXPENSIVE TO LIVE IN The San Francisco Board of Supervisors in the US voted in a moratorium proposal which is aimed to help with the city’s housing prices which is the country’shighest. A moratorium is a legal authorization to debtors to postpone collection of payment.

San Francisco has become such an expensive city to live in that the officials have been forced to take the drastic measures to cut down the cost of living. At the moment, a one-bedroom flat in the city goes for $3,000 (Sh290, 421) a month and nearly $5,000 (Sh484,035) for two bedrooms.

The board of supervisors is considering a 45-day moratorium on luxury housing construction in one of its districts, the Mission District, which is a common living area for the working-class. The area has since become a Silicon Valley and pricey restaurants have since come up to carter for the now

upmarket residents. “The growth is pushing out longtime tenants,” said the city’s spokesman, Hugo Vargas “we support the moratorium and urge a time-out on evictions.” He said that the working families are being forced out by housing developers and city officials have a

responsibility to fight back. The moratorium would give the city time to buy some of the land available in the Mission District in order to develop hundreds of affordable housing units for lower-income and middle-income families.

Tobacco seller to scale down Kenya operations Global raw tobacco merchant Alliance One International Inc. has announced the start of a strategic plan to scale down its operations in Kenya. Alliance One Tobacco (Kenya) Limited is a subsidiary of Alliance One International, with its corporate head office in Morrisville, North Carolina, USA. Its core operations involve sponsoring farmers to produce tobacco mainly in Migori County. The firm is also involved in processing and exporting their products to the international market. Alliance One International has attributed the need to scale down its Kenyan operations to the substantial shift in the global supply and demand of Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco. With the prevailing slump in the tobacco market, Alliance One International has now embarked on a strategic process to “align and reposition its operations,” the distributor has said.

The Company will not sponsor tobacco farmers in various parts of the country who have been engaging in contract out grower services. The Company announced that it will also cease its field operations as of July 1, 2015, leading to the downsizing of the positions in the Company and by extension, the employees holding those positions. Alliance One Tobacco Kenya, Managing Director, Francis Chege, said, the Company will maintain its legal presence in Kenya. It will continue to have some minimal presence at its Thika processing base with a limited number of staff in order to continue marketing its tobacco inventory. “Alliance One is proud to have been a part of the tobacco industry in Kenya for the past 25 years, but unfortunately customer demand for the Kenyan supply has declined and the Company has been forced to realign its operations to changing market conditions,” said Chege.

is “social media and economic empowerment.” “We want to ensure full digitisation of government operations to increase efficiency in service delivery and weed out corruption associated with manual processes,” Dr Matunda explained. Speaking at the same event, various players in the digital

communications sector called for increased budgetary allocation for social media departments by the public and private sector. They said if well funded, the social media sector can help boost employment creation for the youth. OLX Country Manager, Peter Ndiang’ui said there is need to adopt creative solutions informed by

research on impact of social media to solve the growing unemployment problems in the country. “For Kenyan companies, the growing use of social media has brought itself a new challenge that has resulted in the emergence of digital agencies and social media experts” said Mr. Ndiangu’i.

Kenya will soon become the fastest growing East African nation, new data from leading global statistics firm, Research and Markets has shown that In a study dubbed Kenya Infrastructure Tracker Report 2015, it was revealed that the government has shown strong commitment to economic transformation through infrastructure development projects. “Multiple sectors will benefit from the development of road and rail infrastructure in Kenya,” said the report. It went on to say that the level of development in the country is evident in all urban areas. The report noted that the commitment of the Government of Kenya will secure significant foreign direct investment into the country within the next 5 years. The initiatives are set to boost inter-

regional trade, while creating employment opportunities at an unprecedented scale. However, the report mentions that the country has been plagued with “high transport costs for many years because of insufficient, overused, and rundown infrastructure.” On the other hand, significant improvements have already been made to facilitate more efficient trade. Among other major transport infrastructure projects that are underway is the LamuSouth Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPPSET) corridor. LAPPSET refers to a new port facility at Lamu, a railway line, a highway, an oil pipeline, and a fibre optic line that will link the aforementioned countries, thereby boosting trade and cooperation in the region.

ribalism in Kenya has been a recurring topic for years. Yesterday at 1 am, the President announced the appointment of Patrick Ngugi Njoroge to replace Prof Njuguna Ndung’u at the Central Bank. This elicited harsh reactions from Kenyans on Twitter. Some of the KOT could not stomach the fact that the president had once again appointed people from a certain ethnic group. The way Kenyans see it is that #Kikuyus are being favoured for appointments than all the other 41 tribes in the country. The hashtag Kikuyu was trending on twitter for the better part of the day and it was ugly. We all know by now that KOT sail on the boat of Freedom of Speech and no one can prosecute them for speaking their mind. In a bid to tame the tribalism monster many concerts have been organized and patriotic songs arranged. The recent past has seen a popular blog come up with a hash tag#postivetribalism where they attempt to parade what is positive in media especially about certain tribe. While it may not be conventional it has shifted focus from the ills.

Before

Ethnicity has always been the big pink elephant in the room. During the 2007 elections, ethnicity played a big role in fuelling the post-election violence. Young people openly turned against one another in what has gone down in Kenya’s history as the darkest days of our time. While a deal was brokered and calm restored, tribalism it seems is still rearing its ugly head and social media is not helping or is it? Kenyans are a resourceful and creative lot. They tend to laugh at themselves and make light a situation that would otherwise be taken wrongly. Lately on social media there have been memes popping up which are titled word of the day according to a particular ethnic group. The memes which are hilarious seeks to make light of the situation in regards to the way certain tribes pronounce words or how they speak. The particular words are put in a sentence that when read out loud is funny. This has served to bring Kenyans closer and comfortable with other people’s tribes. Visiting literature giant Ngugi Wathiong’o while giving a public lecture

yesterday said, “we can not win the war against tribalism by shunning our local dialects.” The award winning author says t r i b e is not negative and should be celebrated. On Madaraka day the first lady Magaret Kenyatta trended on KOT for rocking a radiant red Maasai regalia, many commended her look and wondered why millions were spent some time back in the search for a national dress. The same can be said for the many Kalenjins who have made us proud in athletics. What then ails us? In simple terms it is systems says activist Boniface Mwangi. “We are not following the rule of law and the greedy keep duping us with PR gestures, we are not tribal but when the head of state becomes tribal, what is expected?” He poses. Popular blogger Robert Alai also echoes his sentiments posting, “you can’t replace a Kikuyu with another Kikuyu and expect it to be business as usual.” Is there light at the end of the dark tunnel?

e live in a world where internet connectivity is key. People are constantly online monitoring what is going on. The phone has become the most valued possession for some. So much so that when the phone is off one can get a panic attack. We have become so dependent on being connected that when we aren’t we feel as if the world has come to an end. To some extent it is understandable because our phones and the internet are our only link to the outside world. Without the internet we would not know what was happening in another country. The internet provides a space where real time information can be dished out. One will not have to wait for the newspaper or the top of the hour news to know what happened in

a different country. Every morning when most of us wake up, the first thing we do is check our phones. One by one we go through all the social media platforms we are on and check out what went on while we were asleep. Once done with that, we then get up and go about preparing for the day ahead. Connectivity has become so important that when people go to a restaurant or club, they ask if there is Wi-Fi even before ordering food and without blinking, ask for the password. Wi-Fi has become that important. It is a do or die situation. The best hanging spots are characterized by the strength of their Wi-Fi connection. My day starts at 8:00am and ends at 5:00pm but sometimes I can work up to 11pm depending on the workload. What qualification do you need for your job? Undergraduate degree in either Political Science or Law. Good communication skills and proper networking especially with the political class. Was this your dream career? I believe my background and opportunity changed my dream. I wanted to do medicine. The two factors contributed to what I am today.

How did you start out? When I joined campus, I chose Bachelor of Arts. Political Science was one of the courses I started with alongside Sociology and Swahili. I later majored in Political Science and Swahili. That created interest in politics and later became an active member in politics. The 2007 referendum made my way into politics. With the theory from the school, I am growing every day and loving every moment. What achievement have you had so far? Working with a political party, which is the mother of democracy in Kenya is one of my achievement. I have also managed to work with the strongest opposition in the country and work for a coalition as well meeting great politicians across the nation. Is there any challenge you have experienced? I believe every working set up has its own challenges. In my field,

the major challenge is in line with corruption but I thank God I usually avoid temptation. What is the best part of your job? When I create networks with people from different parts of the country with different cultures. For me, it’s all about good leadership which leads to good governance. What are your future plans? Creating platform for molding leaders who are of substance to the community. Any advice to aspiring election officers? You can be what you want to be so long as you are committed and passionate. Love what you do and do it to the best of your ability. In politics, make friends, network. Don’t put boundaries, be a friend to all.

DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 Quite the contrary! You may be restrained by technical limitations. Perhaps your financial resources will be insufficient. In other words, you won’t be able to follow your usual pattern of taking refuge on a spiritual island and quietly contemplating your inner thoughts. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Stubborn as you are, it doesn’t make you the greatest specialist in group dynamics. Certainly no one would ever accuse you of enjoying working in a group, unless you’re the one in charge. Just such a miracle is possible, Aquarius, provided you take the first step. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 Everyone knows that you have trouble adapting to change in the world around you. Unfortunately, that’s life and you can’t do much about it. However, you aren’t powerless. Well done Caitlyn, welcome to womanhood

Whatever man! Caitlyn Jenner (the Olympian formerly known as Bruce Jenner) is one lucky woman. At 65 years, she’s way past menopause, so no “personal summers”. She’s way off child birth too, so no chance in hell she’ll be getting stretch marks, morning sicknesses/ nausea and walking around like a duck with some future ungrateful child in her womb. Caitlyn won’t ever

suffer dysmenorrhea, or ever have that humiliating couch examination that passes for a Pap smear. She will never have to worry about sagging breasts since she has firm artificial ones. The downside though; at 65 her only next transition is being the next Aunty Acid! That will make her transition to womanhood complete! Welcome to the species Ms Jenner. — Sarah Bakata, Nairobi

FIFA can clean its own house The United States is taking the phrase “policeman of the world” to the extreme. The laws used to bring FIFA officials allegedly involved in corruption to federal court in Brooklyn are more properly used against terrorists. Most of the actions in the indictments take place beyond our soil. If there is a problem with corruption, law enforcement against FIFA should be centered where there is more at stake. It is also hypocritical that the corruption investigation seems to have started right after the United States hosted a lackluster World Cup and seems to have hit its climax when the U.S. bid lost to Qatar —Ahmed Farah, Nairobi

A round of applause for Kenya and the whole of East Africa for embracing the world of fashion. Thank you. Now, it is time that fashionistas in our country get total support as this will not only change the social part but also economic state of the so called third world countries. This includes the artists, painters and entertainment industry as a whole. Other leading countries are making a great fortune out of this. Think of how this will create employment and prevent youths from engaging in illegal

behaviours. Where we have a market that supports works done by our own with no discrimination. We have so many creative and blessed hands out there that are yet to be recognised. Therefore, instead of pointing fingers and complaining, each one of us should listen to the voice of reason and act positively to bring change. The government should give their total support as this will bring social and economic change one of the things that we are striving so much for. — Kate Kangai, USIU

Preventing child sexual abuse should be a major public health initiative

Cases of child sex abuse are on the rise, the recent case being that of an ‘anonymous’ MP who has allegedly been raping his daughters, even in his wife’s knowledge. If it were a higher priority, identifying children at risk could be done in pediatrician’s offices and emergency rooms. Risk factors include neglect and psychological mistreatment. Mandatory reporting of child abuse is a legal obligation by health care professionals; other forms of violence that include children should be illegal but are not. Domestic violence, witnessed by children, is a common antecedent to other forms of abuse. However, it frequently goes unreported because the abused person (most often a woman) does not report the abuse. Another implication for child sexual abuse is sex trafficking. It’s time for compulsory parenting education at every birth and for increased training of health care professionals for identification and monitoring of those at risk — time, in other words, to begin protecting our children. — Winnie Kagwiria, Fedha

Abortion should be blackballed

I think SONU Chairman Mr Babu Owino is doing an amazing job in ensuring that comrades are represented fully. Some few days ago he wrote a plea to the president, asking to be allowed to burn all abortion clinics in Kenya. It is alleged that dozen of abortions are being carried out daily and more so especially by female students at the institutions. This is a great move that also requires government officials to take part, for hundreds of women are losing their lives with some even having a lifelong health issues. Some of this clinics are run by quacks whose aim is to get money, with little care about life. There needs to be serious action on that. — Hannah Ngila, Kenyatta University

Diversity of Catholic Views As a devout Roman Catholic, I am respectful of the Vatican, but I would caution against any presumption that Catholics who attend Mass weekly, or even daily, are necessarily there to affirm conservative Catholic dogma. I experience a group of diverse, intelligent Catholics who are at Mass to pray, to give thanks and, most important, to celebrate and receive the Eucharist, which fundamentally and ineluctably bonds us to God and to our fellow worshipers.

The former Gor Mahia coach says coaches’ and player to playing attractive football as opposed to defensive minded play witnessed in the league. “Play should be open otherwise you don’t deserve to be footballer, ultra-defensive tactics are for past years. DARE ME TO FLY AGAIN: Robin Van Persie celebrating his equalising goal for Manchester United against Chelsea last season.

Robin van Persie says he can “go on for several years” amid speculation about his future following an injury-hit season for Manchester United. The Netherlands striker, 31, made just three appearances in the last three months of United’s 2014-15 campaigns as Louis van Gaal’s side finished fourth. “I’m going to calmly sit down and consider everything,” said Van Persie, whose contract expires in 2016. “Take note of my words. I feel 100% fit and have ambitions to play every week.” Van Persie scored 30 goals in 48 matches in his first season for United after joining from Arsenal for £24m in 2012 but this year returned only 12 goals from 31 appearances. Speaking in January, the Dutchman said he did not know if he would be staying at Old Trafford beyond his current deal.

Senegal draw with Colombia as Mali are beaten Senegal drew with Colombia, while Mali were beaten by Serbia in their second matches at the Under-20 World Cup. After a 3-0 loss to Portugal in their Group C opener, Senegal needed to bounce back to keep their hopes alive.

They took the lead against Colombia when Mamadou Thiam beat two players and lashed in, but Alexis Zapata scored a penalty to make it 1-1. Mali were beaten 2-0 by Serbia but remain in the hunt in Group D, with all four teams level on three points.

Having shocked Mexico 2-0 in their opener, Mali went into the game full of confidence. But a superb free-kick by Sergej Milinkovic and a tap-in from substitute Stanisa Mandic gave Serbia the win and also put them top of the group on goal difference.

Football sponsors happy with Blatter resignation Fifa sponsors, including Visa, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s, have welcomed Sepp Blatter’s decision to resign as president of football’s world governing body. Mr Blatter’s decision to step down comes amid a corruption scandal. However, both Visa and CocaCola repeated warnings that they expected a swift overhaul at Fifa. And McDonald’s said it hoped this would be the first step towards “gaining back trust from fans worldwide”. Visa said it was encouraged “by the recognition by Fifa that extensive and fundamental reform is needed as reflected by the announcement that President Blatter is resigning”. “This

is a significant first step towards rebuilding public trust, but more work lies ahead,” it continued. “We repeat, however, that it is our expectation that Fifa will take swift and immediate steps towards addressing the issues within its organisation to quickly rebuild a culture with strong ethical practices that will restore the reputation of the games for fans around the world.” “We believe this decision will help Fifa transform itself rapidly into a much-needed 21st Century structure and institution,” Coca-Cola said. Other sponsors, Budweiser, Adidas and McDonald’s, also issued broadly positive statements.

Rudisha out of Birmingham meet

World record holder and Olympic 800m champion David Rudisha has pulled out of Sunday’s Diamond League meet in Birmingham due to fresh injury fears. The middle distance star wobbled out of a race in Ostrava late last month, holding his leg in pain. “With a second opinion, I have been asked not to risk it,” said Rudisha. “The progress was good and I was ready to go, but it will be just a few days too soon,” Rudisha said on Wednesday. Rudisha, 26, is currently undergoing treatment in Europe. His coach said the injury “was just muscle spasm, which looked quite severe on television, but as we have established, it was not too serious.” Rudisha has struggled to return to form after battling a nagging knee injury, which forced him to miss the 2013 world championships in Moscow. His last memorable race was at the 2012 London Olympics when he stormed to a spectacular new world record of 1:40.91 in the 800 metres.

NOW WHAT: David Rudisha has pulled out of Sunday’s Diamond League meet in Birmingham due to fresh injury fears.

Youtube man wants to smash more records in Rome meet Commonwealth and Africa Javelin champion Julius Yego says he targets to further his national record set last week in Ostrava during the next two IAAF Diamond League legs starting with Rome on Thursday. Yego broke his own national record last week At the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava during the IAAF World Challenge, throwing 86.88m and improved on his personal best of 85.40m. “Rome and British Athletics Grand Prix three days later in Birmingham on Sunday are my next big assessments,” he said. “I thank God for the continued support and guidance, I never thought I will break the national records, but here we are I have broken it severally,” he said. Yego says the secret to his improvement has been down to starting his training early which helped him to be in good shape at the start of the season and he maintains his main target this season is to do well in the World Championships in August in Beijing. After Rome and Birmingham, he hopes to compete in the World Challenge in Rabat, Morocco before turning his attention on the Kenyan Championships later in July which will also be used to select the team for the World Champs in Beijing.

YOUTUBE MAN: Yego gets ready to throw at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Oslo, Norway.

Two time Kenya National Rally winner Alastair Cavenagh, says he is ready to wrestle other top drivers in the fourth round of the championships in Voi this Saturday. Cavenagh and his navigator Gavin Laurence in their Proton Neo Satria S2000 have one of the four highly rated S2000cars that will feature in Voi. Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo in a Proton, Quentin Mitchell’s left-hand drive Skoda Fabia and Nikhil Sachania’s

custom-made handcontrolled Fiat Abarth Grande Punto are others who will be driving in S2000s. Cavenagh who didn’t finish a single rally last season, was upbeat he will lead his Proton to a podium result after rebuilding the gear box while resting his Porsche that he wants to enter at the East Africa Safari Classic Rally. “The Protons have been unreliable and disappointing since we acquired them last

year. I had hoped with a new engine, the problems of reliability would have been resolved but this has not been the case. “I have no option but to stick with the car for this year and try to make it reliable. The gearbox has been rebuilt and it is high time that the car proves critics wrong. The Porsche is currently being stripped and rebuilat and I will do one more rally in it in preparation for the East Africa Safari Classic,” Cavenagh said.

looking to maintain the momentum when it sends the team to the 2016 Rio Olympics,” the statement signed by Nock secretary, F K Paul said. “NOCK is committed to sharing the success of our athletes in order to create sporting heroes and role models that will inspire the youth of this nation. We will be happy if we all join in celebration of their wonderful achievements,” Dr Kipchoge Keino, the Nock chairman, added. Kenya Pipeline Company donated Sh1 million for the gala awards, a first of its kind organised by the Olympics body where Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Arts and Culture, Dr. Hassan Wario is

YOU’RE HIRED: Former Valencia, Liverpool, Chelsea and Napoli coach Rafa Benitez with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez after he was appointed the new Real Madrid coach to replace Carlo Anceloti.

Benitez praises Sterling as he takes over at Real Rafael Benitez said he “admires” Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling at the news conference to confirm his appointment as Real Madrid manager. The ex-Liverpool manager has ended a two-year stint with Napoli, signing a three-year contract at the Bernabeu with the promise of “quality football” which “wins trophies”. When asked about 20-year-old England international Sterling, Benitez said: “We admire Raheem, that’s no secret - but he is not one of our players so I can’t really comment on him.” Sterling, who rejected a new £100,000-a-week contract in April, wants to leave Anfield and has also been linked with a move to Manchester City.

Not necessarily - despite world-record signing Gareth Bale, 25, being linked with a move back to the Premier League. Madrid-born Benitez, who said he is “emotional to be back home”, says he wants to “enjoy” his “great squad” and would not be drawn on contract negotiations. He also batted away a question about the club signing Manchester United’s 24-year-old Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, who could leave Old Trafford this summer. “I like the way you have tried to sneak that question under the radar but we will evaluate everything in time,” said Benitez. “We will not name names today.”

He has taken all of his backroom team with him as he tries to dethrone Barcelona as La Liga champions and improve on last season’s Champions League semi-final exit. He plans to build “an attacking team”, built on the foundations of training sessions which are split 80-20 in favour of ball-work to other physical training. The 55-year-old, who replaces La Decima-wining coach Carlo Ancelotti, was described as “a methodical tactician, tireless worker and footballing scholar” on the official Real website. The article added: “Benitez is one of the greatest coaches on the global stage.” Real president Florentino Perez added that Benitez is “a man who breathes

…as Djokovic knocks Rafael Nadal out of French Open to advance to semis

T

he real Serena Williams finally showed up on Wednesday, which spells bad news for the other three women remaining in the French Open. Having struggled through her previous three rounds, all of which went to a deciding set, the world No1 ripped apart the fragile game of Italy’s Sara Errani 6-1, 6-3 and stands two wins away from a 20th grand slam title. On Thursday she will play Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky, a woman who two years ago was washing plates and working towards a career in hotel management. The contrast could not be plainer. In another match, Novak Djokovic became only the second man to beat Rafael Nadal at the French Open with a straight-sets victory in the quarter-finals in Paris. The world number one ended the nine-time champion’s reign 7-5 6-3 6-1. The Serb, now two wins from completing the career Grand Slam of all four major titles, wil play Andy Murray in the semi-finals on Friday. Nadal, on his 29th birthday, suffered his first defeat in six years and his second in 72 matches at Roland Garros. His only previous French Open loss came in the 2009 fourth round against Sweden’s Robin Soderling - but this defeat was far less of

a shock. Djokovic, 28, went into the match as the favourite, on a 26-match winning streak and as a man on a mission, desperate to add the French Open to his Wimbledon, Australian and US Open victories. “It’s definitely a big win, a match that I will remember for a long time,” he said afterwards. “You go through more emotions than for any other match. Of course, playing against Rafa in Roland Garros, it’s a special thing. It’s a special match.” He added: “Tomorrow is a new day and I have to move on. It’s only quarter-finals, and I want to fight for the title. “That’s what I came here for. I have to kind of direct my thoughts to the semis.” The first set lasted a gripping 67 minutes as Djokovic raced into a 4-0 lead after 21 minutes only for Nadal, constantly urging himself on, to haul himself back to 4-4. Top seed Djokovic pressed hard once again to earn three set points in a 12-minute 10th game, but had to wait until the 12th to make the decisive move. Nadal missed a routine smash, reminiscent of the overhead Djokovic failed to put away in their epic semi-final two years ago, and eventually succumbed on the sixth break point with a volley into the tram lines.
