NEWS FRIDAY, MAY 8, 2015

Safaricom unveils home entertainment service From Page 1 Safaricom today unveiled a new product that is set to spark competition among service providers within the digital television industry. The telco officially launched its 4G decoder, branded theBigbox as part of an expansion strategy to cash in on Kenya’s digital migration while meeting the needs of its 23 millionplus customers. 4G refers to the fourth generation of wireless communication services and offers some of the fastest Internet speeds available.

Safaricom Ltd described its product as one that will “redefine home entertainment.” The TV product will allow consumers to purchase preferred programmes, including films and documentaries, giving them the option of viewing these shows on their televisions, smartphones and tablets. Together with its pre-existing mobile phone and internet services, Safaricom’s new product will position the company as a key player in a multifaceted sector that had previously been dominated by firms

like the Wananchi Group. “The product will serve as a key driver for data growth in the coming years,” the company said in a statement. The mobile service provider launched the service at the Sarit Center in Nairobi earlier today, following previous plans to enter the television market by the end of next year. Safaricom has also promised to roll out its 4G network in 13 towns and cities by the end of 2015. “Our 4G network is now available in Nairobi and Mombasa,” Safaricom

CEO, Bob Collymore said. “This is a first for Kenya and will enable our customers to experience super fast home broadband and mobile data offerings,” he noted. “We have increased the population coverage of our 3G network to 69 per cent, completed the modernization of our 2G network which covers 92 per cent of the population and have connected 30 percent of our base stations to our fibre,” Collymore added. His comments come hours after the mobile operator announced a 38 per cent jump in profit after tax from

Sh23 billion to Sh31.9 billion. Much of the growth has been attributed to non-voice services. M-Pesa accounted for 20 per cent of total revenue. The revenue earned from mobile data “grew at an impressive 59 per cent, driven by an increased uptake of affordable data bundles,” Safaricom said. Following the impressive results, Collymore’s term in office was extended by two years from August this year.

COURT DIRECTS IEBC TO FACILITATE VOTING BY KENYANS LIVING ABROAD

Garissa attack suspects to spend another month in police custody

The Supreme Court has directed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to put structures in place and ensure groups like Kenyans living in the diaspora are able to participate in elections. “The IEBC ought to put in place mechanisms to ensure that voting at every election is simplified, bears assured transparency, and takes into account the special needs of persons or groups with special needs, such as Kenyans living in the Diaspora,” read a unanimous decision of the bench.

Five suspects held in connection with the terrorist attack at the Garissa University, in which 147 students were killed, will spend a second month in police custody pending completion of investigations, a court ruled yesterday. This follows a fresh request for extension of custodial orders against Osman Abdi Dakane, Rashid Charles Mberesero alias Rehani Dida, Mohammed Abdi Abikar, Hassan Aden Hassan and Sahal Diriye Hussein, who were arrested over the April 2 massacre at the university. An earlier detention order granted to the police to finalise investigations before charging the suspects expired on Wednesday. However, one man who was held alongside the suspects has since been released from police custody, while over 10 other suspects have been arrested following intensive interrogations, the prosecution said yesterday. A court in Nairobi, before which the prosecution made the fresh application for extended time, was told that

Although the judges agreed that it is still impractical to impose a time-frame on the electoral body to facilitate voting by all eligible Kenyans living abroad, it expressed hope that advances in electronic technology and commitment by relevant agencies of constitutional governance will ensure diaspora voting becomes a reality. Presently, only a few diaspora residents can vote in the presidential election and referendum at select embassies and High Commissions. But the court directed the IEBC to effect progressive

voter-registration for Kenyans living in the Diaspora and file annual reports for review by the National Assembly and the Senate, through the offices of the Speakers of the two Houses. It subsequently threw out an appeal by the IEBC against the decision made on June 6, last year, by Court of Appeal Judges Roselyne Nambuye, Daniel Musinga and Kathurima M’Inoti, requiring the agency to set up more registration centres for Kenyans living abroad to be registered as voters for all elective positions.

Cameron promises better governance for ‘all of UK’ David Cameron says he hopes to govern for all of the UK as a BBC forecast gives the Tories 329 seats - enough to form a slender majority in the Commons. The prime minister said it was “too early to say” the final result but he hoped to form a government. Labour has been all but wiped out by the SNP in Scotland, while shadow chancellor Ed

Balls also lost his seat. Ed Miliband, Cameron’s closest rival said it had been a “difficult and disappointing” night for Labour The Lib Dems are heading for as few as eight MPs, with Vince Cable, Ed Davey and Danny Alexander losing their seats. The BBC forecast, with well over half of the results now in, is Conservative 329, Labour 233, the Lib Dems

eight, the SNP 56, Plaid Cymru three, UKIP two, the Greens one and others 19. Mr Cameron all but declared victory in a speech after being returned as MP for Witney, in which he set out his intention to press ahead with an in/ out referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union and to complete the Conservatives’ economic plan.

the released suspect was an employee at a hotel where the terrorists ate. He was set free after investigations revealed “that the attackers fed at the hotel without his knowledge.” “So far the phone data belonging to the suspects in custody have been analysed and they do reflect that they are directly connected to the Al-shabaab group in Somalia,” prosecutor Daniel Karuri told the court. He said the call data records show that the suspects made calls to suspected Al Shabaab agents within and outside the country prior to the attack. ‘The investigators want to interrogate the persons whom the calls were made to and who were in constant communication with the suspects,” the prosecutor added. He said it has been impossible to cover far-flung regions including Somalia and Mandera and Garissa within the initial thirty days that the court granted. Mr Karuri told the court that investigators have, so far, been able to travel to Tanzania where one of

the suspects, Mberesero, comes from and “his parents and relatives were unable to explain when he disappeared from home.” “Investigations are on-going in regard to detailed forensic examinations of the scene of crime at the university, including extraction of mobile phone records,” the prosecutor said. He said several leads were being followed and an additional 30 days were reasonable and are in line with the Prevention of Terrorism Act, which allows detention of suspects for a maximum of 90 days. “Once investigations are complete we expect to charge the suspects with terrorism related offences, “Mr Karuri told the court. The suspects opposed there request for extended detention but were told the matter was serious and related to an attack in which over 100 people were killed.” Principal magistrate Kenneth Cheruyoit ordered the suspected detained till June 4 in various undisclosed police stations in the city.

Gangsters of the sea: Dolphins have the ability to form ‘gangs’ Dolphins have developed the ability to form ‘gangs’ and have been doing so for quite some time. The marine mammals have complex social networks like humans, a recent study has revealed. The study found that bottlenose dolphins, in particular, avoid individuals they don’t like and “hang out with their friends” in specific parts of a lagoon the Daily Mail reports. Experts found that the geography of a lagoon they studied on the Atlantic Coast of Florida seemed to influence the social dynamics of a group of dolphins. Scientists at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) at Florida Atlantic University, studied interactions between 200 of the creatures in the Indian River Lagoon to reveal how they interact. While it’s well known that dolphins

are social animals, the team carried out experiments over the course of more than six years, to learn about the movement behaviour and habitat preferences of the dolphins. They found that individual dolphins spent time with individuals they liked and avoided those they ‘hated’. The study, which was published in the journal, Marine Mammal Science, offers insights into how dolphins organise themselves, who they interact with and who they avoid.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has called on county governments to develop strategies on improving sanitation and waste disposal to help keep preventable diseases at bay. She said that the recent deaths of 14 people and hospitalisation of 70 others in Nakuru County due to cholera, are indicative of the need to boost the fight against preventable diseases. She spoke at Afraha Stadium Annex during the handing over of the 25th fully kitted Beyond Zero Mobile Clinic to Nakuru County.

Scientists hope this information will be used by environmentalists to understand how dolphins use their environment. It will also provide more information about how these social groups share information, breeding behaviour and even diseases.

Why gender row can send MPs home The disagreements amongst MPs on how to deal with the gender rule has put the life of the 11th parliament on line with the deadline to implement the constitutional requirement fast approaching. Women Members of Parliament have lashed out at Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkong’a accusing the chair of the National Assembly’s committee on legal affairs for trying to subvert the gains made in women liberation. Chepkong’a tabled a Bill, the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2015, in which he is trying to rally the MPs to indefinitely postpone the deadline for implementing the two-thirds gender rule. “The Bill was considered by the Legal Affairs Committee and was unanimously adopted by the members without reservations. It is the best option for this country,” said Chepkong’a.

Speaker Justin Muturi then proposed the abolition of County Women Representative positions together with those of nominated members and instead have 100 special seats reserved for women in the House. According to Muturi, this is the easiest way to fulfil the constitutional requirement that not more than twothirds of members of elective public bodies should be of the same gender. “All formulas we have tried to think of end up with too many. Kenyans have to wake up to the reality of this rule,” he said. But the Women MPs again came out guns blazing and fired back at their speaker critising him of taking sides in the topical issue. “A Speaker does not debate, neither does he vote; we ask him to maintain a neutral arbiters demeanour and not to add to a debate that has

already taken controversial tones,” said Nyeri Woman Representative Priscilla Nyokabi. She spoke when the women MPs addressed a third press conference on the matter at parliament buildings. But the divisions are become wider, as Parliament grapples with the issue ahead of the August 27 deadline of full compliance with the Consti-

tution enacted on the same date in 2010. Parliament is grappling with the issue ahead of the August 27 deadline of full compliance with the Constitution enacted on the same date in 2010. If MPs fail to find a solution to the impasse before the date elapses, then they will leave themselves exposed to a petition to have parliament dis-

solved for failing to deliver on their mandate. Yesterday, the Women MPs under the umbrella of the Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association said they are drafting two bills to try and find a solution. “The way forward is to see how to increase from 47 to the number that is stipulated in the Constitution. So, we will be looking at the differ-

ence required to achieve the 30 percent… then we would have to go into a party list, but through an election as provided for by the IEBC. The other proposal is to have two Woman Reps per county and should there be a gap, the number can be filled through a nomination in accordance with Article 92,” Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire who chairs the association said.

ODM hits at Uhuru, Ruto over massacre: The opposition ODM party Thursday accused President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy of “dancing on the graves of Kenyans”, and accused the government of failing to guarantee the security of Kenyans. Speaking just three days after 56 people were killed by bandits in Nadome, a remote area on the boundary of Turkana and Baringo counties, ODM chairman John Mbadi demanded that Mr Uhuru and Deputy President William Ruto show leadership from the front and avoid “retreats and warnings”...

Stop these killings: Kenyans have demanded the Government restores security following the massacre of over 200 people in just one month, in the terrorist attack in Garissa and recent ethnic conflict in the Turkana- Pokot belt. And the apprehension grew after reports that even with the outrage about the slaughter on Monday of at least 54 at Nadome in Turkana County, there was another daring raid on Wednesday in which a GSU officer was injured at Nakwamoru in Turkana South Constituency. “The officer was shot in the right hand palm...

Bank lending rates remain at 15.5 pc and will not go any lower— report BE PREPARED: A report by Statlink Africa has revealed that lending rates will not drop below current levels

Consumers will have to contend with current lending rates in the coming weeks as some commercial banks refuse to lower the cost of loans. The average lending rate for commercial banks now stands at 15.5 per cent, the latest

2015 economic report by Stratlink Africa has revealed. The report warns that the rates are not likely to go any lower owing to the government’s “appetite for domestic debt.” “It is unlikely that the country will

experience further lowering of the benchmark rate in the near term as the government keeps an eye on inflation that stands at 7. 1 per cent at the end of April 2015,” the report stated. Inflation refers to a general increase

in the cost of goods and services and fall in the purchasing value of money. The report states Kenyan borrowers remain largely unaware of pricing differences between various banks despite introduction of Kenya Banks

Reference Rate in June 2014. The Reference Rate is aimed at facilitating transparency in credit pricing, making it easier for consumers to choose loans that are best suited to their financial needs.

BUSINESS NEWS new farm trends: integrated Demand for loans fish-poultry farming technology looks promising as HF

A group of innovative Kenyan youth is pioneering an automated technology targeting farmers with limited space in the production of fish, poultry and plants. The efforts are also doubling household incomes as well, while ensuring that families feed on balanced diets. The technology dubbed aqua-poultry, is a classic example of how farmers can benefit from the symbiotic relationship between plants and animals. It also allows farmers with limited space to tap into the benefits of fish farming as well as poultry. Robert Mwakio, the brain behind the project borrowed the technology from America where he was studying. Although the concept is relatively new in Kenya, it is in use in some of the developed countries. “If I was to use the original technology and materials, then the cost of this project would be in millions of Kenya shillings but as it stands currently, the cost is between Sh200,00 to 250, 000 depending on the size and local prices of materials,” he says. A 40 square feet structure can hold up

to about 10 fish tanks, 8 plant tanks and over 200 chickens. Each tank has a capacity of about 150 tilapia fish. The technology is hinged on two concepts; symbiotic relationship between the plants and the animals as well as the maximisation of less space for more output. The aquaponic poultry culture creates a symbiotic relationship between fish, chicken and plants. Although chicken

BUSINES WISE Young people make many mistakes and key among them is failure to reach a state of financial independence. Some tend to become complacent once they secure a steady job with a steady salary. This leads to financial stagnation, a situation where someone makes money simply to spend all of it as they wait for the next pay cheque

are easy to maintain caution must be taken when dealing with specific chicken breeds such as layers or broilers much emphasis must be put on the living conditions. The average market price for Tilapia fish is about Sh250 and therefore with over 1,500 fish after four months, a farmer using this technology is able to pocket over Sh350,000. This is besides the proceeds from the vegetables and the chicken in the same structure.

gears for expansion Housing Finance is planning to establish at least 30 branches by the end of 2016, up from the current 18 branches, the mortgage provider has said. As the demand for housing and loans continues to skyrocket, Kenya’s premier mortgage provider is setting itself up for expansion. During a previous announcement, the lender disclosed that it had disbursed Sh2 billion worth of banking-related loans against Sh2.5 billion worth of loans for mortgages and construction. Commenting on the results, Housing Finance, Managing Director, Mr Frank Ireri said the firm expects its banking business

to record further growth during the year. “Housing Finance banking strategy entails opening branches in areas where the group is financing a major commercial or residential development,” he noted. “The banking strategy is also expected to focus on growing its retail customer base as a source of affordable funds,” said Mr. Ireri. The firm’s key banking products include short term loans, insurance premium financing and asset finance among others. The mortgage provider also plans to roll out leasing services during the course of the year.

Financial mistakes people make in their 20s

to arrive. Analysts at Financial services group, Old Mutual informed X News on some of the major mistakes that people in their 20s often make. The first and perhaps most prominent mistake that young people make is failing to create a budget, says Old Mutual. This leads to wanton spending and is

one of the main reasons many employed people are broke long before the month is over. The second mistake is taking on debt. At a time when mobile service providers and banks allow people to take a loan by dialing a few buttons on their mobile phones, debt is an ever-present concern. Young people want fast cash but forget that every one

of these loans is to be paid with interest The third mistake is what Old Mutual’s experts describe as the “Buy now, upgrade later” mentality. This, they explain, is evident when a person buys items such as a car to suit their independent lifestyle without concern for their financial future.

The fourth mistake is “failing to realize how the little things add up.” Old Mutual says, “If you put together the Sh300 per day for a week spent on lunch or Sh3,000 spent at your local bar every weekend, it can add up to thousands at the end of the year.”

Aliza Rajan was recently named Miss India, Kenya. The beauty will represent the country in the world stage in Mumbai, India .Can we finally win it?

can

aliza Rajan Congratulations. How does it feel? It feels euphoric. I feel blessed to be able to represent Kenya and I see it as a big opportunity. I am happy that I get to showcase my country on a bigger platform. How was the process? I sent in an application that had my portfolio, a few adverts I had done for companies and wrote a personal statement. I think the personal statement played a key role. What ran through your mind when they called you? I was surprised to be honest, because my application had been sent months before and I had begun to forget about it. Then I got the call, at first I thought they were joking but it was not the case. I am just beginning to get used to it.

bring the beauty crown home?

What causes will you champion? I will focus more on children. They are close to my heart and I would like to work with underprivileged children. The franchise encourages us to work with children focused charities. What will you do differently with the crown from previous queens? My aim is bringing the crown back to the country. I don’t think that any of the previous crown holders have ever won the Miss India World title. I also want to make a difference in the lives of many people. I want to start my own non-profit organisation for underprivileged children. I also think this platform gives me an opportunity for my opinions and voice to be heard and I can champion causes I care about.

How has the reception been so far? The response has been really good. My family and friends have been very supportive. They are really proud of my achievement and they are basically my backbone. What are you doing to prepare? Right now, I am really focusing on the talent night. We have to perform something for three to five minutes. So I am deciding on whether to do the regular Bollywood dance or Zumba. My heart is leaning more towards Zumba because it is really coming up and it is different. I hope to make a decision in the coming weeks. What is next for you? I am a designer. I have been making outfits for people and now I want to open my own shop and start my line. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have set it up.

SHOPPING

Shopping can be a fatiguing and StreSSful activity if you don’t Shop at a time that workS well for you.

Top Many of us need a few simple reminders of how to shop smart. Don’t just get in the car and point it in the direction of your favourite shopping destination! Take a few moments to familiarise yourself with this list of savvy shopping strategies.

shopping tips Shop with a list

Many people overspend or buy things they don’t want, don’t need and never end up using because they haven’t prepared properly. This is your hard earned cash and precious time you are spending – it’s worth a few minutes of preparation, don’t you thinkAnd remember to use that list when you shop! That list will be no good scrumpled up on the bottom of your bag or jammed into your pocket. Use it and only buy things that are on that list!

Set a budget

Yes, oh yes – the “b” word. Budget. This is important. Many people overspend on things they don’t want, need or use because they had no parameters around their spending – they just went ‘hell for leather’. Not a smart way to shop. You need to set a ballpark figure (or a more precise one if you have the specific research on what you are shopping for to support it) on what you are going to spend on this trip, what is comfortable for you to spend and what makes sense for you to spend on this shopping trip.

Pay with cash

The research is clear: we pay 20 – 50% more when we shop with magic plastic, whether it’s using a credit or debit card. There’s something about that magic plastic that can make us feel like we’re using Monopoly money, play money. Like it’s not real. Unfortunately, those credit card fees are very real! So once your list is prepared and you

have a realistic budget you can stick to, withdraw your funds in cash and use only that cash for this shopping trip.

Set a timeframe

bite to eat together, but don’t buy until you can go shopping on your own.

Don’t shop when you are tired, hungry, lonely, bored or upset

Don’t allow yourself to meander around a shopping centre in an aimless fashion. Many people use shopping in a lollabout fashion, whiling away an afternoon in their favourite mall.. If you want to shop smart, this isn’t the way to go – no meandering shopping! Set a specific timeframe that you will complete your shopping in, and once that time is over, it’s time to head home.

This is not an exhaustive list of the emotional states that lead some people to over shop and end up buying things they don’t want or need..

Shopping can be a fatiguing and stressful activity if you don’t shop at a time that works well for you. Shopping when the malls and stores are most busy (such as late night shopping and Saturday mornings) can lead to shopping fatigue where you end up fractious and irritable – not a state in which smart shopping usually takes place. Pick a time to shop when you are going to be at your most alert and positive. And make sure that you take regular breaks or shop for shorter periods to avoid becoming fatigued.

Remember that the sales person is there to sell to you!

Pick the best time for you

Shop alone

Many people find that shopping partners are more akin to accomplices in crime! They can egg us on to making purchases that we don’t want or need, and can have their own (sometimes unconscious) motives for encouraging us to shop. Window shop, or have a

Ask “do I really need this?”

Too many of us buy impulsively with no thought to what we need or even want. Our hard earned cash and even more precious time is wasted on things that have no place in our closets, our homes or our lives.

No matter how friendly or pleasant a sales person is, here is the fact you cannot avoid: they’re in it for the sale. Yes, they may care that you walk out only with items that suit you and that you will use. But they want you to walk out with something.

Don’t buy just because it’s on sale ‘Sale’ really is a four-letter word! Accompanied by the word ‘shoe’, it is possibly responsible for more impulse shopping than almost any other word! Remember that a bargain is not a bargain if it’s not you, doesn’t fit correctly, you don’t love it, or it doesn’t fill a legitimate gap you have and is therefore a real need. Only buy items on sale when it’s something that is on your list and is within your budget.

hen you enter Teriyaki Japan, the first thing that welcomes you there is the divine aroma of sweet chicken. For a moment, you will be convinced you’ve entered ‘chicken heaven’. The grilled chicken outlet is located along Mama Ngina Street near Corner house. It is just two months old in Kenya and it already has people talking. We decided to check the place out to see what the hype is all about. Disappointment is an understatement! Did we just expect too much? There was really nothing special about

that ‘heavenly chicken’. We ate the simple Chicken Teriyaki combo, which has chips, chicken and salad. The only bit worth writing about in that combo is the salad. Despite the average quality food, the reception by the staff was warm and it made us feel like we were at the right place. The meals come with steamed rice/ noodles/chips/salad and fresh vegetables. The options for the dishes include Chicken Teriyaki, which costs Sh490, and the Chicken Teriyaki Spicy, also Sh490. There is also Mayo Chicken Teriyaki,

which costs 490, Chicken Teriyaki Fry Egg at Sh550 and DX Chicken Teriyaki, going for Sh690. The Chicken Deep Fried bowl is Sh490, while the Chicken Cutlet bowl costs Sh590. A BBQ beef bowl also costs Sh590. Teriyaki Japan also serves different kinds of doughnuts and cookies, which cost between Sh70-100. Coffee, espresso, Kenya tea, and green tea are also one the menu; a small cup goes for Sh140 while the big cup is Sh170. If you have not been to Teriyaki Japan yet, just give it a try, we could have just been there on a bad day!

Dumbala hit maker Jay A will be releasing his latest song Smash next week Tuesday. The song has some Calypso and Hip Hop vibes to it. He told XAccess that the song is a fun dance song that will keep his fans on the dance floor all night long. Going by how Dumbala turned out, we have no reason to doubt the budding artiste.

WEATHERFORECAST

DAILYHOROSCOPES CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan19 Confusion may reign today as you try to glean some information that seems to be totally elusive, Capricorn. Are you researching a project? Are some of the facts obscure? For now, it might be better to work on something else and go back to your research in a few days. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 A sibling or neighbor might be compelled to move away, Aquarius. This might be emotionally wrenching, and you could have a difficult conversation with this person. It isn’t always easy to let go of someone you care about, but this could be a valuable lesson in detachment. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 You may have had a temporary setback, but you’re probably being especially pessimistic and not seeing the whole picture. Sit down and try to juggle a few figures. You will probably find that you’re better off than it seemed at first. Focus on what needs to be done and do it!

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Your imagination may conjure up all sorts of dreadful scenarios, like your beloved finding someone else. Don’t do this to yourself. Your friend probably misses you, too. Keep busy so the days pass quickly until your friend comes back and you’re together again. Be patient!

Sudoku

TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 If so, you might experience aching feet and legs today. Wear comfortable shoes and stay off your feet as much as you can in order to allow the pains to heal. You might want to relax in a hot tub at some point, preferably with a romantic partner! GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 You may want to try to lift this person out of that mood. Take your friend to a sporting event, party, or funny movie. If you’re refused at first, don’t take no for an answer! It will do your friend good to get out of that funk, and it will do you good as well! CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 You might have trouble with your plumbing today, Cancer, particularly if you have a big kitchen. Pay the money to have a professional take care of the problem. It will save you work and frustration. In the meantime, have a pizza delivered while you’re waiting to get your kitchen back! LEO Jul 23- Aug 22 Are you having problems with your phone, Leo? Is traffic out of control? Perhaps it might be best to stay home today and put conversations with your friends on hold for a while. You might miss a call from someone far away, but the person will try to reach you later. VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 No matter where you look, you won’t be able to find it. This could stimulate your determination, and you might end up searching for hours. The object is in the house, but it’s probably under something, perhaps in a place you would never dream of looking.

MUSTREAD

LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 A romantic partner might suggest a trip together, Libra, perhaps to a place you’ve been anxious to see. If you like the idea, don’t respond too enthusiastically right now or your friend might feel threatened and back off. In fact, don’t talk much at all. Listen and nod agreeably! SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Uncomfortable intuitive impressions from someone close might be troubling, Scorpio. Is your friend ill or bothered by events out of his or her control? Your friend probably won’t want to talk much about it, so you will just have to let them tell you what’s going on when the time is right. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 This could be disappointing, but think about it carefully. What other dreams do you have? Figure out which ones are most important to you and then decide which are most promising right now. Sometimes little setbacks like this prove to be blessings in disguise.

Kenya kept position 117 in Fifa ranking Kenya remained inposition 117 in the latest release of FIFA Rankings today. This has been attributed by lack of activity by the senior team in recent months. The lack of i mprove m e nt has also been reflected in the continent with Kenya retaining its 34th position, a position they held in last month’s release. Algeria, Cote d’Ivore, Ghana, Tunisia and Senegal are the top five countries in the continent. Meanwhile, the Botswana under 23 side arrived in

the country on Thursday morning ahead of their return leg match with Kenya in the 2016 Olympic Games football qualifiers. The team held their first training session at the Ruaraka grounds on Thursday evening. Botswana managed a 3-0 win two weeks ago a results they need to defend to advance to the next stage of the qualifiers where the winner meets Zambia. Kenya coach Bobby Williamson reiterated the junior Harambee Stars have everything to play for against Bostwana. “As it stands, they (Botswana)

STAGNANT: Kenya are still in position 117 and have recorded an improvement in the continent where they are now in position 34 from 37.

have a huge advantage over us. However we can’t let that kill our spirits, we have to give everything to get the required results,” he said.

Bale should stay at Real Madrid, Calderon Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon wants to see Gareth Bale (left) remain at the club after this season. Wales international Bale was criticised following his display in the Champions League defeat by Juventus on Tuesday. He has endured a difficult second season at the Bernabeu since joining from the Spurs. But Calderon told Radio Wales Sport: “I don’t have any reason to think that he’s not going to stay. He’s a very good player

and committed to the team.” Bale, who has been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea had fewest touches and passes of any Madrid player in the 2-1 first-leg loss in Turin, including goalkeeper Iker Casillas. That led to Manchester United captain Roy Keane hitting out at the Welshman, saying he gave Real “absolutely nothing” in the defeat. Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, dismissed criticism of the winger’s display but the

Cardiff-born attacker has come under fire in the Spanish media this season He was among a number of players whose cars were attacked by fans following a defeat by Barcelona in March. Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland defender Mark Lawrenson believes the criticism of Bale this season has been harsh. “If Ancelotti didn’t think he was contributing to the team, he wouldn’t pick him,” Lawrenson said.

Barca boss describes Messi as an alien Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is “a player from another dimension”, according to the club’s manager Luis Enrique. The Argentina international, 27, scored twice in his side’s 3-0 champions League semi-final first –leg victory over Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp. “We created many more chances than our rival and in a thrilling final 15 minutes he put them in,” said Enrique. “Beyond what Leo did in attack, look at what how much he ran in defence.” After Barcelona missed several opportunities in the first half, German champions Bayern were slowly starting to impress themselves on the game until Messi struck on 77 minutes, rifling the ball past Manuel Neuer from the edge of the area.

Just three minutes later he skipped past Jerome Boateng before lifting the ball over Neuer. He also provided the assist for Barca’s third goal, scored by Neymar in injury time. Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta said Messi had left him speechless, while Javier Mascherano enthused that just having the Argentine would always give them the edge against any opponent. “We have Messi so it’s an advantage for us,” Mascherano said.”He’s a player that is impossible to describe. It’s just... you have to watch him.” Defender Gerard Pique added: “[Bayern boss] Pep Guardiola knows Messi, and he knows that if he is inspired nobody can stop him, he scored two spectacular goals.”

Up next: Is Amir Khan bargaining for Mayweather bout in September? Britain’s Amir Khan says he could fight Floyd Mayweather in September despite previously stating Ramadan might disrupt his training. Khan, 28, is a Muslim and is set to fast during the holy month, which lasts from mid-June to mid-July this year. Ahead of his bout with Chris Algieri on 29 May, Khan said: “Mayweather normally fights mid-September and Ramadan is a little bit earlier this year. “It gives me enough time to get the training done, so it can happen.” Khan said on Sunday that Mayweather’s manager was keen to “get a fight on” after the undisputed welterweight champion beat Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas. Mayweather, 38, took his unbeaten record to 48 fights with a one-sided points victory over Pacquiao and is expected to make his next fight his last.

Bolton-born Khan, who takes on former light-welterweight world champion Algieri in New York, says he has also been invited to fight Pacquiao, 36. But Khan insisted his focus is purely on Algieri, who was knocked down six times by Pacquiao during a massive points defeat in November. He said: “I really can’t take this Algieri fight lightly - lose and it would ruin my dreams to fight the biggest names in boxing. “I’m not going to be fighting Mayweather until I win this fight. I’m not looking past Chris because I’ve made that mistake in the past. There are bigger fights out there for me, but this is my focus.” During Ramadan Muslims fast during daylight hours to learn self-discipline, while also reminding them of those less fortunate than themselves.

UP NEXT: Amir Khan takes a massive hit from Lamont Peterson. He says that he could fight Floyd Mayweather in September despite previously stating Ramadhan might disrupt his training.

More runners expected for Kericho Marathon Organisers are expecting an increased number of runners for the sixth edition of the Kericho Tea for Health Marathon planned for this Saturday. The projected number is 1,000 which is an improvement from 700 athletes who took part in the annual event last year. The top remains at Sh1.5m for the winners of the 42km race for both genders. Second place finishers will be awarded Sh500,000 while bronze winners will bag Sh250,000. The prize money will trickle down to the 10th finisher. In a bid to kick out doping, once again winners will not get their prizes until results of their dope test are revealed. South Rift Athletics Kenya chairman John Wachira said of the athletes who have registered for the marathon, Uganda has the highest number from the neighbouring countries followed by Ethiopia, Sudan, Eretria and Djibouti in that order. This he says are efforts to make the marathon live to their international tag by inviting foreign runners to take part in the race. “It’s no surprise the full marathon, which has more prize money, having the largest number of athletes who have registered to take part in the race both local and internationals, logics are in place for a better race,” said Organisers have also put elaborate measures in place to ensure a smooth race, including having plan ‘B’ and ‘C’ in case the main course is damaged by the current rains. “We understand there are heavy rains in the area around this time and we have set plans ‘B’ and ‘C’ as far as the course is concerned to ensure there will be no distractions, “added Wachira. Alice Kimeto and Felix Kipchirchir clinched the men and women’s titles respectively. Kimeto who beat 2011 Boston marathon winner Caroline Kilel to successfully defend her title is expected to make it three consecutive wins. Kipchirchir is also expected to defend his title. Apart from the full marathon for the elite runners, there will also be 10km race for upcoming stars and a 5km family fun run.

Amonde: Our fans deserve better Kenya sevens captain Andrew Amonde says the national team season has been far from good, saying they will try to give the fans something to smile about in the last two legs of the IRB series. Kenya lie 13th in the table going to the final two legs of the 2014/2015 World Rugby Sevens Series in Glasgow, Scotland, this weekend and London, England, next weekend. “As players we are not satisfied with our performance this season, deep down I know the fans are hurting,” said the captain who together with the rest of the team arrived in Glasgow City on Monday. “We have struggled all season but we have faith in the last two tournaments. We have worked very hard and we have also been rewarded with players making it back from injuries.”

Biko Adema, Augustine Lugonzo and Tony Onyango from injury and Dennis Ombachi are some of the players returning to the national team after a while. The captain further gave assessment of the tough pool B match they’re in but maintained that the team will give their all. “After hard training, we have had friendly matches against Fiji and Canada, two physical sides in the series, they have helped us in a way or to prepare for our coming games,” he added. Kenya opponents will be South Africa are on top of the log and looking to secure the series win and automatic Olympic qualification, New Zealand are on the brink and pushing Fiji very close in the battle for second place. Kenya starts against New Zealand before facing South Africa and then Samoa.

Blatter wants more women in football leadership Fifa boss Sepp Blatter says women’s football is “limping behind” the men’s game in both profile and sponsorship. The 79-year-old also thinks football is too “macho” and wants governing bodies around the world to employ more females in positions of influence. In 2004, Blatter, 79, was heavily criticised for suggesting female footballers play in “tighter shorts” to improve the game’s popularity. But he says he feels like “a little bit of a godfather” to women’s football. “Women’s football is still limping behind a little bit,” said Blatter, who is seeking a fifth term as president of world football’s governing body. “To get new partners for women’s football is difficult because the focus is on men’s football.” Said Karen Espelund, the only female member of Uefa’s executive committee
