ust days after locking out heavy commercial trucks from passing through the central business district, the County Government of Nairobi has now turned its attention to up-country buses as it continues with efforts to ease traffic in

the city. Governor Evans Kidero has announced that long-distance matatus have 30 days to relocate their stations from the city center in order to reduce the high number of vehicles in the CBD.

“We have asked all buses that ply upcountry routes to move their terminals from the CBD in 30 days,” Kidero told reporters yesterday after touring Accra Road and River Road which have the largest percentage of long-distance matatus.

An alternative on the cards is to have those matatus ferrying passengers to and from Western regions terminate their journeys in Westlands while those from the coast entering Nairobi via Mombasa Road end around City Cabanas. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Up-country PSVs face CBD ejection From Page 1 Similarly, those plying central Kenya routes will be asked to establish a terminus at Kasarani. “It has since been established that such matatus sometimes stay at a packing for up to two days as they wait for those before them to pick passengers. This has immensely contributed to the

traffic dilemma in the CBD and the new proposals are aimed at dealing with the menace,” Matatu Owners Association coordinator for Nairobi Geodfrey Akuma said. A number of buses heading to the coast including Coast Bus Service, Tahmeed and Mombasa Raha have their termini along River Road and are bound to be

affected by the new changes. “Those bus companies who park their vehicles along major streets like Accra and River Road will have to move,” Kidero added. Mr Akuma said the owners of private vehicles will also be persuaded to start using public transport to reduce the volumes of vehicles on the road.

“We also discussed the prospects of introducing comfortable commuter buses to try and persuade private motorists to embrace public transport as one way of reducing traffic volumes on the roads. But that may be in future,” he said. He said a report on why motorists prefer their private cars to public transport

means showed poor customer relation practices by conductors and touts, uncomfortability of public service vehicles and fluctuating fares are the reasons many keep off. “We will work on all these,” he said.

RIGHTS LOBBY BLOWS THE LID OFF FOREIGN SEX OFFENDERS IN KENYA While Kenya has its doors open to tourists, businessmen, donors and charity workers, not all visitors have good intentions. Some of them are sex pests, whose aim is to sexually exploit and rob young boys and girls of their innocence. A report by End Child Prostitution in Kenya (ECPIK) shows that Kenyan children are highly vulnerable to abuse by foreigners. The report further documents that there are more than 50,000 children involved in child sex tourism. Besides child prostitution, there are children abused in the least expected places – in the children’s homes. So rife is sexual abuse against vulnerable children that

international activists have petitioned Kenyan and British governments to review their commitment to address transnational child abuse. They want the two governments to ‘implement international obligations and set up national and international law enforcement teams to protect children.’ In Kenya, children mostly salvaged from abject poverty of street life and others orphaned at tender age bear the heaviest brunt of sexual violence. They suffer in the hands of paedophiles and rapists cocooned in the guise of charity workers and tourists. Behind the commendable images of generosity and humility painted on the walls and gates of most orphanages,

are depressing social evils that degrade and leave ineffaceable harm on thousands of children in Kenya. They suffer lifelong injuries in the hands of those entrusted to care for them. But the puzzle is that most foreign sex offenders are investigated and prosecuted outside Kenya’s jurisdiction yet the committed the offences in Kenya. In an international petition, activists are concerned that there are increasing cases of foreigners from the West abusing Kenyan children. The activists say; “British nationals – some convicted sex offenders – have travelled to Kenya where they sexually abused children and avoided prosecution in both Kenya and UK.”

Two Muslim clerics will now be detained for 30 days after the court allowed police to detain another preacher arrested today for allegedly helping in plan that lead to the attack on Garissa University College more than two weeks ago. Mandera-based Sheikh Mohammed Mursi was arraigned in court alongside businessman Zadock Ainea Agutu where it was directed that they be detained for 30 days and five days respectively, pending investigations. Police will probe their bank accounts and mobile phone calls data. According to prosecutor Duncan Ondimu, the two have been in contact with Mr Mohammed Kuno, the al-shabaab commander said to have orchestrated the attack that left 148 people killed. Kuno was initially a madrasa teacher in Garissa before he joined al-shabaab ranks in Somalia. He goes by several aliases including Sheikh Mahammad, Dulydin and Garmadhere. Sheikh Mursi was arrested on April 17 while Mr Agutu was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on the same day as he returned from Somalia. The prosecutor told the court that the two were listed among Al-Shabaab sympathisers in a gazette notice

dated April 7. Their arraignment in court came just a day after Sheikh Hassan Omar Mahati was also detained for 30 days for allegedly financing the attack for which Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility.

Boat crew arrested over migrants’ deaths The captain and a crew member of a boat that capsized off Libya on Sunday, killing hundreds of migrants, have been arrested, Italian officials have said. The two, held on suspicion of people trafficking, were among 27 survivors who arrived in Sicily late on Monday. Italian Infrastructure Minister Graziano Delrio said the prosecutor of Catania in Sicily, Giovanni Salvi, had ordered the arrests of the two men who had arrived in the port on a coast guard vessel. “Prosecutor Salvi has made two

arrests this evening of persons involved, that shows Italian justice is working,” Mr Delrio told reporters in Catania. Other officials said the pair were the Tunisian captain of the migrant boat and his Syrian first mate. A homicide investigation has been opened into the disaster, he added. After speaking to the survivors, the UN refugee agency said that about 800 people died in Sunday’s disaster. Earlier accounts had put the death toll at about 700. “There were a little over 800

people on board, including children aged between 10 and 12,” said Carlotta Sami, of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Italy. “There were Syrians, about 150 Eritreans, Somalians...They had left Tripoli at about 8am on Saturday.” The arrests come after the EU set out a package of measures to try to ease the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. Search and rescue operations will be stepped up and there will be a campaign to destroy traffickers’ boats.

How would you rate County Governments’ performance after two years of devolution?

Bernard Ndung’u.

James Matu I am really disappointed in the county government. They have failed to bring change or development and made a joke of what devolution should be. This country needs working structures that should hold irresponsible leaders accountable. A

Mike Otieno Not much can be shown at the moment because still seem stuck in the experimental phase where dust is yet to settle. The reason why devolution is not a success after two years is because not everyone understood the meaning and importance of it.

Paul Gitau We are not yet where we should be but we will if work on it. With proper structures in place and accountability we will enjoy devolution in due time. It may not be fruitful at the moment but there are some good people who are pushing to ensure its success.

We have more complaints about misappropriation, misuse and embezzlement of funds and resources than before. It will take us time to switch to proper devolution but we may never arrive at it if we don’t run our affairs correctly.

Americans say that Kenya is ‘not so bad’ People from the United States think that Kenya is not as bad as the mainstream international media says it is. A public opinion survey recently conducted in the US shows that out of a list of 4 African countries, Kenya is the most loved. Kenya managed to beat the likes of Nigeria, Ghana and Angola mainly due to the efforts of Washington-based public relations firms that have been retained by the Kenyan government for the past four years In the study, US citizens were asked to rate the four countries based on their level of security, political stability, economics, culture and athletics. Kenya was ranked first in each of the listed categories. Results from the study, which was

published in the African Review, suggest that Kenya’s image among Americans has not been substantially harmed by the largely negative news coverage of the country in recent years. The survey, which grilled hundreds of US citizens in 40 states, was carried out in late April by researcher, Dane Kiambi as part of a PhD thesis at Texas Tech University. Angola, Ghana and Nigeria have since employed Washington PR firms to manage their reputations in the US. “With Kenya having such reputational capital among the US public, it is up to the Kenya government to seize the opportunity and engage more with the Americans to increase tourism numbers, trade, and foreign investment opportunities,” Mr Kiambi said.

Deputy President William Ruto has softened his stance on the forceful repatriation of refugees at the Dadaab camp saying Kenya, Somalia and UN will now sit and hold talks over a pact signed more than a year ago on voluntary repatriation. He made the change of heart after Somalia Prime Minister Omar Ali Sharmarke paid him a courtesy call at his Harambee Annex office yesterday. “We would like this meeting to address the concerns raised in this matter so that we can deal with the refugee situation in the most humane manner,” Ruto said of the impending talks.

Police curriculum upgraded to cover emerging crimes

EYES ON THE BOARD: AP officers in a class session. TNational Police Service Commission (NPSC) has upgraded police recruits’ curriculum to enable the service to effectively counter emerging crimes.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has upgraded the curriculum for police recruits in a move aimed at helping officers effectively deal with the threats posed by emerging crimes. At the same time, a commissioner has revealed that they will soon have multiple recruitment drives every year to boost police numbers. Commissioner Murshid Mohamed said they will soon introduce more intakes that will absorb less than 10,000 policemen each. “We want to increase the numbers, so very soon we will roll out more recruitment exercises that will take fewer officers but aimed at increasing our numbers. We need to do this at least twice a year,” he revealed yesterday. Currently, the police department recruits 10,000 police officers annually in a one-off exercise. “Some people would argue that it is not the number that is required but the quality, but common sense will tell you that yes we need the numbers,” Mohamed added. He said the curriculum for the recruits have been upgraded to deal with emerging criminal trends like terrorism as

well as respect for human rights. “There is already a change in the trainings, there are certain components that have been incorporated in the recruits training putting in mind the human rights aspect,” he said. He says the recruits will also have to get training every time they are promoted from one level to the other. This, he says, is aimed at giving the recruits managerial skills in various positions. “So when they go into those trainings they will be required to take up even more technical trainings that will equip them adequately for the service. “He added. The service has also introduced numerous trainings that will be done abroad with Israel and USA having the largest number of the programmes. The commission has at the same time expressed confidence in yesterday’s recruitment exercise claiming that the measures that were taken during the exercise have ensured a free and fair process. The Commission did a reshuffle of the officers overseeing the exercise in every center at the last minute to avoid a networking in bribery incidences.

A suspected thug was last night shot dead by police in a botched robbery in Kayole. The suspect is said to have been in the company of three others and had attacked pedestrians whom they were robbing when an alarm was raised and police alerted. The body was later moved to the mortuary. Elsewhere in Jericho, two suspected thugs dropped a pistol as they escaped from police chase. The gang was escaping from a robbery scene on a motorbike when they accidentally dropped the pistol that had five bullets. Police say they are yet to establsih ownership of the weapon.

S. Korea PM to resign over scandal South Korea’s Prime Minister Lee Wan-koo has offered to resign after facing accusations of accepting bribes, just two months into his post. Mr Lee denies accepting 30 million won (about Sh2.5 million) in illegal campaign funds from businessman Sung Wan-jong. Sung, the boss of a construction company who was found earlier this month hanging from a tree by his tie in an apparent suicide left a note that listed eight figures he claimed to have bribed, including Mr Lee. But Lee has denied knowing him very weel although media reports have suggested otherwise. President Park Geun-hye has called for a “thorough investigation”. She is due to decide on his resignation after she returns from Peru where she is on a state visit.

Conduct more research, online entrepreneurs urged Online entrepreneurs have been advised to conduct more research before starting up online business so as to increase their chances of success. Kaymu Managing Director Aleeda Fazal said the online market place is growing and tasked online entrepreneurs to find out what products sell frequently online and then narrow down to what gap there is in the market and combine them with their interests and product offering. “You should never be scared of competition. It is your uniqueness and aggressiveness that will get you through. You also need to know your customers’ needs so that you can offer the best service,” he said.

Evaluate your website’s performance using Alexa Despite the fact that many small local businesses have an online presence in the form of a website, few know how many people visit their pages and not many know how well their site is doing. To solve this issue, software developers have come up with a number of tools that can collect this information – tools like ‘Alexa’. Alexa is a free-to-try online tool that offers useful information about the ranking of a website and that of its competitors. Available from ‘alexa.com’, it is free to use for 7 days. From then on, it costs roughly Sh930 a month for a basic subscription. “With Alexa you can find out the performance of your site, the number of links pointing to your site, the number of site visitors and other statistical information that pertains to your website,” says a spokesperson on behalf

of the company (also called Alexa) that made the tool. The spokesperson adds: “To have a competitive business with an online presence, you require relevant information that will help you build a more competitive website that helps to market your business effectively. This is what Alexa offers you. Alexa is compatible with all major browsers.” Founded in 1996, Alexa is a global pioneer in the world of online data collection. “Our obsession is to empower customers through compelling and actionable insights that drive measurable results for their business,” explains a statement from the group. The Alexa team promises users that with their tool, they will get the exact insights they need without having to “navigate through extraneous content.”

Fazal also advised budding online businesses to ensure their websites are easily accessible and visible so as to attract more consumers and make more sales. “While choosing an online selling platform, it is essential to choose one that is easy to navigate because buyers can easily get frustrated and discouraged from continuing the sale. Keep in mind that the customer is always looking for a hassle free experience and that should be a key decision making factor when selecting a platform to work with,” he said. PRICE DRIVER Consumers yet to benefit from drop in fuel prices Kenyans are yet to feel the effects of the recent fall in global fuel prices despite the country standing to benefit the greatest as an oil importer. The cost of super petrol has decreased by Sh0.11 due to the drop of the average cost of imported super petrol, CNBC Africa reports. In Nairobi, super petrol will now cost Sh89.35, diesel will go for Sh77.48 and Kerosene will retail at Sh57.21 per litre. The drop signals a fall in the cost of

other consumer goods but Kenyans are still among the least likely to reap the benefits. Commuter fares for instance, hardly ever follow the trend while local petrol providers are at the mercy of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). Last month the regulator increased pump prices for the first time after nearly six months, a move that triggered a lot of friction from various sectors that felt the pinch.

“Petroleum products imported into Kenya are paid in US dollars,” the regulator explained in an earlier statement. “For the costs to be incorporated in the pricing formula, an exchange rate is used to convert the US dollar component into Kenyan shillings. As a result, when the shilling depreciates against the US dollar, more shillings would be required to purchase a given volume of product,” ERC officials added.

a recording deal at Universal Music, mentorship from Akon and promotion totalling more than $500,000 (KSh46.85m). After a grueling head-to-head spin, the show finally came to an end last weekend. It remains the continent’s biggest music competition. On the final day, Kenya’s favourite boy band Sauti Sol turned up the heat with an earth shaking performance. While Kenya was honoured to host the star-studded event, it was unfortunate that Benjamin Webi missed out on the grand prize. Webi was Kenya’s overall winner and representative in the continental star search. With his vocal prowess and great performance, many thought he would grab the prize. However, all is not dashed for the budding artiste. The Airtel Trace Music Star search gave him and his fellow contestants the pedestal needed to build their brand. With this opportunity, they should be in a position to polish their music talents and flourish.

The show was presided over by a jury of specialists comprising singer Akon, Devyne Stephens and Lynnsha from the French Caribbean. These judges harboured 25% power of the overall votes, while the rest was left to the public. Legions of revelers turned up for the grand gig and swayed to every beat dropped by three top DJs, Joe Mfalme, Cuppy and a guest DJ from the USA. DJ Joe Mfalme, however, left a section of fans agitated, by failing to give Kenyan music decent airtime at such a top notch continental gig. He appeared hell-bent on playing foreign music while DJ Cuppy fed the mass with West African tunes that had them scrambling to the dance floor. As Tanzania celebrates their victory, Africa eagerly awaits to hear and play Mayunga and the other contestants’ songs. Webi already has a track out, dubbed Nikuskize. He should now use the newfound fame to launch a flourishing career.

years of perfected sewing skills and begs for appreciation of the hard work put in place. With technology taking over almost every aspect of our lives, the ancient art has not been spared either. Embroidery machines have made it easier and faster to come up and finish designing. Technology has gone as far as availing different patterns made available for the artist. All one has to do is download a template of their desired pattern, copy it on the fabric using fabric chalk or pencil, run it through the machine and voila, a pattern that would have taken weeks to come up with can now be done in few hours. The artist would no longer need to rack their brains for hours trying to come up with unique patterns. Old school embroiders swear by the hands, needle and thread as the only tools required for the trade. They believe technology inhibits originality, creativity and is a threat to their art and a form of laziness! Handmade embroidery has a more personalized touch as no piece comes out the same as another.

Bevern Oguk, a seasoned fashion designer advises fellow designers to always think about the finished product first before designing anything. This will help in knowing which needles to use, which stitches to inculcate, whether to go old school and make every stitch by hand or whether to make use of technology and embrace computer aided designs and machines. “It will be worthwhile to know what you would like to accomplish with each piece. The most important thing is to know what type of material you will be working with as it will determine the success of the end product,” advises Bevern. He says linen is a choice material as it is not too rigid to work with while the brown thread used in repairing shoes is good to come up with authentic and strong designs,” says Bevern. Whether the pieces are hand or machine made, one thing is for sure, the beauty and authenticity of embroidery is incomparable and a form of art in itself.

A man is not necessarily be tied down to a woman but he may end up being after getting accustomed to the ‘free milk’.

D

amien was hesitant about cohabiting with his girlfriend but he eventually gave in. Not because he entirely wanted to but because of the ‘financial convenience’ card she played. “I thought: ‘Why not let her move in if I can save the cash I waste on laundry and house cleaning services? Besides, we work in different companies and don’t spend the entire day together,” he told XAccess. Doesn’t that sound like the meaning of the terrible phrase ‘why buy milk when you can get a cow for free?’ But the gains of cohabitiing are not as straight-forward as many imagine. Once you move in together, the initial fiery romance could dwindle. And because the man no longer sees the need to ‘chase after the woman’ his enthusiasm in the relationship may also fizzle. “If I was to spend every second with my live-in girlfriend, I am sure we’d break up any minute,” said

Steven Muasya. Muasya admits to faking business trips just to spend time by himself or with his boys! Like a candle in the wind, the relationship may not withstand the pressure. When this happens, a feeling of suffocation kicks in explaining why Muasya chooses to stay away from his girlfried whenever he can. In the worst-case scenario, one person wants out but extricating yourself may prove difficult because the hurt that comes with it. Men and women have a dissimilar take on things. Some women look at cohabiting as an obvious step towards marriage. But it is a naïve strategy because the man may not commit even after getting accustomed to the ‘free milk’. Themiscommunication, eventually leads to inconsolable heartbreaks where the woman feels used and cheated or vice versa. When a woman has a child with a man who does not intend to marry her, it can be distressing. The pain may also haunt the children when they fail to grow up in a stable family unit. Many people fail to understand

that cohabiting offers the man an easy escape route. He is less bent on making a formal commitment of marriage within time. In turn, the woman, who has been clutching on hope for years, becomes unsettled. Frustration sets in but she keeps living for the day he will pop the question. This is usually the case where couples stay in a relationships longer than they should. And because the woman has no idea on how to function on her own, she keeps on wasting more time with a man who is content with a mere living arrangement. Living together cannot be trusted to guarantee long-term compatibility or marital success. This is because it can blind you away from objectivity since there is not enough space for proper discernment. Living apart is a process of respecting the journey of discovering your future together while still in your personal spaces. So unless you understand what you are getting into, shut down the joint account, turn off the wife mode until there is a ring on your finger. That said, it should be noted that this does not mean all live-in relationships are doomed.

Yesterday, King Kaka was in Machakos County to present Governor Dr Alfred Mutua with his new album, Legend of Kaka. The Governor displayed surprising knowledge of Rabbit’s songs, which he attributed to his lovely wife, Lillian who is apparently a big fan of the rapper. The artiste paid the Governor a courtesy call because he feels that the Machakos head has been at the forefront of promoting the arts industry. There was a rap battle where the King and the governor both spit rhymes to the amusement of everyone present. Kaka is set to visit ten states where he will meet fans and popularize his album.

My boyfriend is pressurizing Me for sex

I am a born again Christian with a boyfriend who is not so much into religion. We have been together for eight months now. When we met, I clearly told him that I am not ready to have sex until marriage. He respected it then but he has been bugging me for sex for the last three months. He says it does not make sense for a 22 year old to abstain when I am old enough to handle it. Some of my friends have advised me to leave him and date a saved man but I can’t because I love him. What should I do? -Tinah.

Dear Tinah,

It is honorable to meet someone who treats intimacy with so much divinity. This is because the youth today approach sex so casually that it has lost its sacredness and become an ordinary act of pleasure. But hearing your uprightness about it is very impressive. Since your boyfriend agreed to date you despite your wishes

to abstain, he has no right to ask for sex midway through your relationship. If he cannot take it any longer, perhaps you should both part ways. Of course it is not easy to walk out on someone you love. But sane sacrifices are painful at times yet for a worthy course. TAURUS Apr 20 - May 20 Read romance novels instead of great literature. Otherwise, by the time you get to class you will already be suffering from intellectual overload and absorb very little of what you hear. Keep yourself hungry for knowledge until you get there. GEMINI May 21 - Jun 21 You may be too stressed to put up with gossip or too much intellectual stimulation. Tell your friends you will go out with them another time. All signs indicate that this is the wisest course for now. Relax with some hot chocolate and a pile of movies. CANCER Jun 22 - Jul 21 There will be a lighthearted, almost silly energy in the air today, Cancer. The Universe is encouraging you to give up your iron grip on that list of responsibilities and have some fun. Picture all the pressure you put on yourself as a ball and chain that you need to unshackle.

VIRGO Aug 23- Sep 22 A desire to make a big purchase might tempt you to overextend your credit cards and clean out your savings, Virgo. Make the purchase if you really feel you need it and it isn’t going to cause any major setbacks in your financial situation.

MUSTREAD

LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 The other members of your household may be out or out of town. You might not feel up to any carousing, so you will probably choose to stay home and read or watch TV. However, your natural gregariousness could cause you to feel abandoned. Call a friend and talk for a while. SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21 Usually you’re quite social, Scorpio, but today you will feel like nothing more than working alone. Notwithstanding your wishes, however, you might be plagued with phone calls, visitors, and people wanting advice or help. Don’t fight it. Go with the flow. Everyone has days like this. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 Too much good food, good wine, and good conversation, Sagittarius? Not that any of this is undesirable, but you may be suffering from overload right now. Maybe you’d better get some rest and give your brain some time to sort through all the information you’ve taken in.

AMNESTY AND SUBSEQUENT ANTI-RADICALIZATION OF YOUTHS NOT COMPERENSIVE ENOUGH As I laud Interior Security CS Joseph Nkaiseri and the entire security fraternity for a 10-day amnesty to radicalized youth, more is needed to make the offer more appealing. They should come with a subsequent

anti-radicalization program that is more alluring to the youth. It is imperative that the Government gets it right on this so that the wayward youth can see the logic of forfeiting the gang.

Christian clerics who are opposed to the amnesty ought to remember that, amnesty is part of the standard menu of fighting a well-established gang, a case in point is when the government was dealing with the

dreaded Mungiki; amnesty was given to reclaim those willing torenounce their allegiance to the terror group. Fortunately, many of them surrendered and this gave the

authorities an easier time dealing with fewer stubborn hardliners who had ignored the ultimatum.

City Stars spurred by win against KCB, says coach Nkata After 720 minutes, strugglers Nairobi City Stars, registered their first win of the 2015 Kenyan Premier League season, beating KCB 3-1 at the Nyayo National Stadium. The win excited Coach Paul Nkata, who said his players had finally got it right after eight matches in the top flight league. Nkata lauded his team for a good fight in a game he had termed a must win in the quest to keep their season in control. “I feel proud to finally get the win. It was a do or die game for us and I am happy that we did it finally. We worked well as a team and it feels good to see that the hard work we put in training and in the game paid off well,” said Nkata. Nkata who introduced Ebrima Sanneh with the scores at 1 – 1 and the Gambian went on to score twice to win it for City Stars, leaving the coach purring. He said their strategy in the match was spot-on. “Sanneh has proven to be an important player to the team and today he proved to everyone what he can do. I am happy for him and I want us now to build on this win in the coming matches,” he added. The coach is now urging the players to build on the important win in the coming matches if they are to turn around their season.

Big games giving Liverpool coach sleepless nights

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says his side needs to deal with big-game occasions better after a dismal FA Cup semi-final performance at Wembley. The Reds lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on Sunday to add to their League Cup semi-final defeat earlier in the season. “We were nervous for some reason. Maybe when you want to win something so much, perhaps it plays on your mind,” said Rodgers. “Dealing with the occasion is something we need to improve at.” Rodgers added: “There have been other big games where we have dealt with that very well, but there are others where we haven’t.” Philippe Coutinho gave Liverpool the lead but Christian Benteke levelled before half-time and Fabian Delph scored a superb second-half winner for Villa. The Reds endured a difficult start to this season and were as low as 12th at one stage, while they were also knocked out of the group stage of the Champions League.

Laiser Hill can rule schools’ rugby infinitely - coach Wambua Laiser Hill Academy can dominate schools game rugby for years to come, says Coach Kevin Wambua. This comes after the school won their first rugby title after beating East African champions Maseno High School from Lake Region 13-12 in the Brookside Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Term One national games at Nakuru Boys High School on Saturday. “Maseno beat us 8-5 in the opening match and apparently that defeat was a learning moment for us because we detected our weakness and we made quick fixes and that is what made us beat our opponents,” said Wambua. “This shows that school’s rugby dominance might be shifting from the traditional western Kenya strong base, I believe my side are here to stay,” he said. Wambua, anticipated a physical match against Maseno just as he did against Kakamega High in the semi-finals. “You got to find weaknesses of some of this side and capitalise on it. They were always going to dominate on the physical game, therefore we decided to counter them on the break,” he said. Wambua further says victory did not come easy but down t a lot of work put by the players in training and preparations for the national finals. Laiser Hill captain Lucas Oppal could not hide his joy. “This is a great moment for us as we have never won a rugby title for nearly 30 years in the history of these games.”

WRAP: Caroline Rotich breaks the tape to win the women’s division of the Boston Marathon in Boston yesterday.

Carol Rotich wins Boston Marathon

Kenya’s Caroline Rotich produced a devastating kick in the final few meters to win the women’s category of the 119 Boston Marathon on Monday. Rotich’s victory came in the wake of the winner in 2013 and 2014, Rita Jeptoo’s ban from athletics for two years after testing positive for doping. “I had trained very hard for this race,” Rotich, 30 said after bresting, the tape on 2:24.55, 31 seconds ahead of favorite Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia. Buzonesh Deba also from

Ethiopia was third. This was the biggest win for Rotich who won Prague Marathon in 2013. She was fourth in Chicago and Tokyo last year. “I saw the finish line tape and I thought this is it, I’m not going to let it go,” she said. She is the fifth Kenyan woman in a row to win at Boston. In the men’s category, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia dictated the pace and widened the gap in the last miles to clock 2:09.17 ahead of compatriot Yemane Adhane Tsegay 2:09.48.

The next four places went to Kenya with Wilson Chebet (2:10.22), Bernard Kipyego (2:10.47), Wesley Korir (2:10.49) and Frankline Chepkwony (2:10.52). Rotich left her victory much later than Desisa, as yet again Boston’s women’s race came down to the final strides on Boyleston Street. This time the duel was Rotich and Mare Dibaba, with Buzunesh Deba, last year’s second-place finisher, left behind only as the trio made the first of two corners in the race’s closing stages, within a kilometre of the finish.
