城隍庙集市街区空间再设计

02 Temple Market Space

2019 THESIS PROJECT/PARTICIPATORY COMMONS

The project will take Town God's Temple Hefei as an example, to do research on Town God’s Temple culture and development history. It is located in the eastern part of China and is the capital city in Anhui Province. The main research is about market and economic communities in the area. The study will focus on three aspects and do more design in the area, including the status of people living in the neighbourhood, the redesign of historic streets and Huizhou culture. The purpose is to redesign the markets, in order to find more possibilities in this place by testing different scenarios and promot communities’ energy and culture through analysing interaction between different groups of people and redesign.

HISTORY

Town God's Temple Hefei was built in Northern Song Dynasty in 1051, which has a long history.

In the past, every year during the Spring Festival, a grand program would be held here. Officials, visitors and citizens would to celebrate. There would also be performances on the stage in Opera Building (Zhou, 2003). Additionally, the business of small traders also operated very well. However, during the past long time, it also experienced several damage and repair. Therefore, after 1978, the government started to create a big market and the Town God’s Temple Market was created in 1986. At that time, over 30 diplomat envoys' diplomatic corps visited this place and give great comments(Zhou, 2003). After that, the market had experienced a long of prosperity. The antique markets created in 1997 became the biggest antique market in Anhui province and attracted antique fa from all over the country.

The antique market has 18,000 square meters, with more than 500 fixed and temporary stalls, including the ancient ceramics of the ages, celebrity calligraphy and painting, Four Treasures of the Study, jade, mahogany furniture and so on. It also held Chinese cultural festivals in France, the Netherlands and other countries(‘Town God’s Temple Hefei Antique Market.’, 2004).

After the re-design for the street and the repair of the building in 2016, it starts to be used as an opera building again. There is a square in front of the building.

When people celebrate and hold some activities, the square offers a good place for people to enjoy. However, it is seldom to be used except festivals.

As for the re-designed streets, we can see that the buildings become cleaner and newer, it also holds some exhibitions to display the history and cultural items. Whilst, the temple market lost quite quantities of visitors after regeneration, especially the antique

The image marked the main distance in design area. The streets of market space I selected have three main width: 6M, 9.5M and 15M. The square near the opera building is showed with yellow mark.

Other space is closer to the food streets, which are able to maintain business by geographical advantage. Whilst, the location of the antique market is relatively more

my interventions will affect the surrounding environment. Generally, most areas would not be influenced because of proper distance. What I should pay attention to is residential area when considering re-design of Opera buildng.

The design area I select are two space: the street close to the antique markets and the square near the opera building. They also can be regarded as market space and music space. For the square, because the opera building is an important traditional and cultural heritage.

Taking the hexagon as a prototype, I made a series of attempts. At first, I tried to create different spaces with different faces, because as an independent stall, the placement and storage of items are also very important. Installation and disassembly should be relatively simple due to the need to consider converting them into temporary seats. The diagram shows the process of attempts

I select some key point in the process to display the component details. The prototype is related to folded table and wood join ts. The wood components form triangular structures to support the table top and it is easy to be folded. Inspired from wood joints application in furniture, the design provides independent components to expand the table when festival comes. The shopkeepers could decide how to use them. The component 1 in the diagram is the component.

There will be a series of scenarios to show how people assemble these components and how to use these stalls.

课程研究 人类世

03 Studio Research

Geologic Time Spiral A Path to the Past

Anthropocene is highly related to human activities.

'The Earth is very old—4.5 billion years or more according to scientific estimates'(Joseph Graham, 2008). So the rock layers co ntained the majority of evidence about the Earth.

The Anthropocene is a geological era because human actions may bring devastating damage to Earth system. Edwards (2015) pointed that since the word “Anthropocene” was introduced in 2000, scientists and nonscientists has started to use this word to describe the world we are living. They thought that the global environment has been shaped by humans in many aspects, including Earth’s land surface, oce ans, rivers, atmosphere, flora, and fauna.

Generally, our research includes background research in different world cities and their geological conditions, as well as what disasters they have met due to climate changes and their connections. Materials map is related to different materials in the world and it shou ld be explained about production, consumption, transportation, etc. During the process, different cities may establish connections. In addition , the object we choose is used to connect world cities and Sheffield sites. All the sites we researched may have relationships. Based on the re search, we should give our interventions and tell a narrative in our own ways, including what happened in the past and future possibilities.
