REHABILITATION CENTER RESTORING A LIFE OF DIGNITY
The project aims to design a rehabilitation center for Afghan widows in Kandahar, Afghanistan, that is expected to provide them and their families with housing as well as education and work opportunities. In addition, it promises to create a friendly and safe environment while offering them with necessary training so that they can be able to support themselves and train future residents. In a country notorious for unfairness and hostility against women, this center is to be seen as a symbol of strength, unity, inclusiveness, and hope.

Before the presidential election results was announced in September this year, Afghanistan remained one of the most difficult areas to survive, and the female population there was confronted with great hostility. The areas of the country that are under the ruling of Taliban regime have become a hotbed for discrimination, gender segregation, and oppression. What this design challenges is to design a rehabilitation center in Kandahar for widows in Afghanistan’s Zanabad, which promises to provide them and their families with housing as well as education and work opportunities.opportunities.
The rehabilitation center is located at the foot of the mountain of Zanabad, a place on the outskirts of Kandahar and 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) east of Aino Mina. It is a large-scale residential project designed to accommodate approximately 20,000 households, which are properly strung together along the Aino Road and diverted from the Kandahar Highway. The terrain of the site is mostly flat, and there are no major adjacent structures except for some adjacent underground water storage tanks and private residences in the south. The main canal of the site diverges from the main road. Considering the relatively peaceful environment, it can be used for development.

It is a low-rise building design plan. The buildings take the form of local traditional communities so that it can roll into one with the urban structure of the local town. Apart from the emphasis on the safety and privacy of the external environment of the community, it has a flexible outdoor area, which reserves space for the local temporary market. Besides, the vitality of the community is also paid close attention. The central courtyard serves as the public green space of the center, and the roof terraces are well-arranged to enhance the interaction between neighborhoods.

The first floor of the buildings is designed into the areas providing the basic functions areas of the community, including adult and children education, medical care, commerce, and catering, to meet the living needs of widows and their children. The second to fourth floors consist of different types of residential units that surround several lighting atriums or patios, in an attempt to meet the living needs of different households.
The facade of the buildings is made of local materials that are structured into arches in different sizes, providing some apartments with a spacious loggia as a transitional space between the inside and the outside. What’s more, the continuous facades of the buildings are processed for partition, creating several outdoor viewing platforms.
YU MIN MEMORIAL HALL
RESTORING YU MIN'S LIFE IN THE FORM OF SPACE The overall design of the memorial hall is to guide visitors to enter a series of experiential spaces of different heights along a path that features abundant changes, which allow them to better experience the exhibition and thus enriching the museum’s narratives to reflect a person’s lifetime. Besides, the building provides an intuitive path for all visitors. When the site is selected, special attention is paid to multiple factors including creating a vibrant open urban space, allowing sunlight to shine into the museum, and making the building echo the nearby landmark landscape corridor.

YU MIN MEMORIAL HALL
RESTORE YU MIN'S LIFE IN THE FORM OF SPACE
The memorial hall is located at the intersection of Yunnan Road and Machang Road in the Five Great Avenues Scenic Spot, Heping District, Tianjin, China, in memory of the great contribution to China made by the nuclear physicist Yu Min. The project resorts to modern architectural design language to reflect Mr. Yu’s thought connotation while the spatial changes inside the hall also reflect the ups and downs in his magnificent life. Meanwhile, due to the long history of the Five Avenues area, most of the buildings there are built in modern times, but the surrounding communities have a longer history, built mainly in the 1970s and 1980s. Therefore, there is a lack of corresponding cultural facilities. The memorial hall has set up a community culture center designed for meeting the needs of residents in the surrounding communities.
The memorial hall is simple and concise in design style, with only three basic materials used, including concrete, steel, and glass, in an attempt to embody Mr. Yu’s unique qualities: wisdom, selflessness, dedication, aggressiveness, optimism, and glory. The exterior shape of the buildings resembles a stretching mountain range, and the white appearance and diamond-like shapes created by geometric cutting reflect Mr. Yu’s dignified quality and unbreakable will.

Firstly, the legs of the triangle and trapezoid are divided into three equal parts, with the straight line parallel to the bottom side. Secondly, the centerline of the triangle is drawn for further division. The centerline is red in the figure. Thirdly, the triangle is diagonally divided into several small triangles symmetrical along the centerline. The diagonal is the blue line in the figure. Finally, part of the centerline is deleted and the connection points in the figure are grouped into red and blue, with the blue rising by 2 m and the red falling by 2 m. Hence, a roof shape can be obtained. The inspiration comes from jagged mountains.

The roof was inspired by the undulation of mountains. It is finally integrated with the memorial hall, embodying the life course of “running, rising, falling, and returning” in an abstract way. The shape of mountains suggests Yu’s tremendous contribution to his motherland.
COMMERCIAL COMP
STACK VERTICALLY,OVERLAP HORIZONTALLY The high-rise building project is positioned as large-scale commercial real estate covering international 5A grade office building and large commercial complex. It is to be a high-end CBD area of regional identity that provides all-round services including office, shopping, catering, leisure, entertainment, finance, and culture. Between the building and the site is an outdoor passage that allows people to access public roof gardens, whose characteristics from woods to sun terraces are diverse. Standing on different positions of the building, people can get a glimpse of the scenery of the city in different directions.

The project, located in Xiangluo Bay Economic Development Zone in Binhai New Area, Tianjin, China, is positioned as a commercial complex integrating office, entertainment, shopping, and leisure, to meet residents’ needs for office, shopping, business activities, and sightseeing. However, with the rapid development of local urbanization, modern buildings occupy most of the land, squeezing the green space in the area to the degree of scarcity and resulting in the insufficiency of urban vitality therein. Therefore, in order to alleviate these contradictions, the site is transformed into a mixed-use site in design, with the goal of meeting local needs while introducing a great deal of public space. One third of the site is a thick green space that can be used for planting local vegetation. The purpose of urban forests is to remind residents, commuters, and passers-by of the scarcity and value of urban natural resources.
The combination of architecture and green space creates a diversified environment. The platform made up of interspersed and superimposed masses offers a special roof landscape, vertically extending the public sphere and having a panoramic view of the commercial area and its surrounding areas.

The building complex, adjacent to the mini forest, is twenty-four stories high, used to provide services for local residents. A public road connects all the cultural, retail, and open spaces in the area, and with the wooden stairs outdoor, the outdoor landscape platforms are connected and ultimately extended to the mini forest.
PUBLIC GROUND FLOOR
LANDSCAPE
The site is partitioned into three zones: square, building, and forest, with the goal of creating a diverse and active public area.
The space before and after the building realizes transition by the building itself, thus creating a series of different green spaces: landscape square and mini forest.
BUILDING GENERATION
LANDSCAPE
With the ground space, three different masses are stacked and combined with each other to form landscape platforms of different heights and sizes, thereby creating a variety of landscapes.
Each roof is designed with a specific roof landscape and recreational environment, and there is a seaside bar on the top floor.
UPPER BUILDINGS
FINAL BUILDING
Three different cuboids are combined in an intersected manner, floating on the landscape roof and extending to the platform below.
The building promises to be a part of the threedimensional urban framework, drawing on horizontal and vertical green spaces to improve urban greening.

On each floor of the building, there are different green rest spaces scattered. In addition, the change in space brings different feelings to tourists while the terraces and cantilever structures at a distance impart lightness to the tower. With the terraces and cantilever structures as a language, the building keeps a rich dialogue with adjacent ones. The outdoor green corridor of the tower building promises to reduce the heat island effect, increase green areas, and effectively improve natural ventilation. Besides, several aerial landscapes are distributed throughout the tower building, further showing up the green space in the vertical direction.
ENOSHIMA VISITOR CENTER
LET THE ROOF BECOME A NATURAL VIEWING PLATFORM The project is designed as a tourist center located on Enoshima Island in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture. With a fair-faced concrete external facade, the building gradually rises from the ground along the east-west landscape axis “Mount Fuji-Shonan Coast, forming an upward roof. Located at the entrance of Enoshima Island, the roof is expected to be a landmark building with a strong sculptural sense. The continuous roof covering blurs the boundary between the ground and the building. The architectural massing in horizontal spread echoes the vast sea and ground. On this small island with rich historical accumulation, this project strives to narrate the deeply-rooted poetry there in a distinctive architectural language.

The concrete slope gradually rises and exceeds the height of the surrounding landscape and plants, so that tourists can have a panoramic view of the ocean and sky and enjoy the scenery of the entire coast while standing on viewing platforms. As such, architecture and nature integrate with each other in a harmonious and entertaining way. In the building, spaces of different heights are superimposed and intersected with each other, forming viewing platforms of different heights. These viewing platforms are connected by a slope so that tourists can enjoy abundant natural landscapes including seascapes.
OTHER WORK
ILLUSTRATION&DRAWING&SKETCH&PHOTOGRAPHY The project is for community planning and design and the site is located in the former Yingshui campus of Nankai University that has been changed into a parcel of residential land. The total land area is 8.16 hectares, and the area for real use is 6.31 hectares. The total construction area is 160,000 m2 (including residential floor area of 150,000 m2 and public building area of 10,000 m2). The overall design of the community integrates the Suzhou charm with the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty in addition to modern design context and construction techniques, in the hope of building a boutique community that caters to the interests and needs of modern residents. The community is a one-axis triple courtyard in the landscape as a whole, symmetrical on the central axis, externally following the Confucian rituals to create a sense of ceremony while internally abiding by the esthetics of artistic conception. In the garden are mountains and water, flowers and trees, corridors and bridges, which create a change of scene in every step, so that people can “enjoy the natural beautiful scenery without leaving the city.
