HALF STREET ,HALF SHOP Task: 2016 Dashilar Pilot Project-Hutong Vision——Micro-public Space Design Location: Beijing, China Partner: Tutor: Role:

Beijing Zhongtian Jianzhong Engineering Design Co.,Ltd Lec. Zhao Xiangdong,Lec. Wang Tao Beijing Dashilanr, Cultural Block Planning, Open Space Design Date: July 2016-Aug 2016(4 Weeks Total) Dashilar’s architectural, as well as it’s cultural, history is woven into the sedimental bricolage of the often ad-hoc, and increasingly dilapidated, residential and commercial buildings within its environs. Unlike many of the other historic areas of Beijing, Dashilar was never trapped within a late Qing dynasty die, with successive system’s, government’s and economy’s shaping its built enviroment. Less effective in leaving its mark constructively has perhaps been Beijing’s rapid evolution of its speculative property market. As Dashilar was left relatively untouched during the market reforms of the 90’s and 00’s it has retained its urban fabric and historic authenticity, but lost its stature and standard of living. Though still retaining some of this rich cultural history, Dashilar, despite its poor architectural quality, still houses and hosts a populous community of residents, tourists and passersby. It is not however only the historic architecture and traditional urban fabric that are endangered. Due to a lack of public facilities, no responsive engineering to its aged infrastructure, and the impact from globalized mass tourism on small traditional businesses and craftsmen, an entire community is under threat. Dashilar Pilot is a series of special pilot projects that aim to take on these challenges as an opportunity to make creative thinking truly matter. Beginning in 2013, Dashilar Pilot is an important long term program of Dashilar Project, as well as being a key section in Beijing Design Week Design Hop, Dashilar Design Community. The project is an attempt to tackle difficulties in the Dashilar preservation and revitalisation project through innovative solutions for social and environmental improvement. Through a process beginning with a call for participation, group research, guideline formation, nodal design, and guideline adjustment, Dashwilar Pilot aims to be a setting of experimentation and exempla’s, bringing direct, tangible and positive change to the community of Dashilar.

INTERPRETATION OF HUTONG CULTURE

Dashilan: It is a famous commercial street outside Qianmen Street of Beijing. Dashilan is located in the center of ancient Beijing and is an important part of the South Central axis. It is located in the south of Tiananmen Square, on the west side of Qianmen Street, and is 275 meters long from the east exit to the west exit. Since 1420 (the 18th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty), after more than 500 years of evolution, it has gradually developed into a commercial street with many shops.

MEMORY OF THE LIFE OF HUTONG

The courtyard house in Hutong are well-regulated in Beijing. The Hutong and Siheyuan, once important symbols of the city of Beijing, are narrow and crowded. Inconvenient transportation and backward public services have become a major problem in Hutong and Siheyuan. If we widen the streets and demolish the renovation of dangerous buildings, it will also involve the transformation of hutongs and courtyard houses. Hutong and Siheyuan have influenced the lives of Beijing local peopel. Conversely, it can be said that the culture of them has created Hutongs and courtyard houses. Many people have nostalgia for hutongs、that years and the warmth of neighboring friendship and family.

PROBLEMS

RECONSTRUCTION STRATEGY

Peripheral issues: · There is a lack of large public spaces for residents and tourists to use for leisure and entertainment. · Lack of a lot of greening, only a small number of old trees and potted plants in the inner courtyard. · The courtyard is small and crowded, and there is no storage space that causes the items to be disorderly.

Business format issues: · The traditional business model is not flexible, and customers are limited by distance and have fewer audiences.

Maintain the original architectural texture and layout, close to the most simple life, return to the most heart of yourself.

In the face of serious urbanization, the construction of Hutong space facilities is backward, and the messy and coexisting coexistence, how to make an old hutong glow with new brilliance and give new vitality. Adding new elements while retaining the original texture, making the entire Hutong more livable.

Traditional space issues: · The new building does not match the surrounding hutong form. · The internal space of the original building is not fully utilized.

THE RETURN OF INDUSTRY Task: High-Rise building design:Design based on industrial building reconstruction Location: Beijing, China Partner: Tutor: Role: Date:

Zhang Yiran Lec. Bu Deqing, Lec. Hu Yan High-Rise Building Design, Industrial Building Reconstruction Design, Open Space Design Nov 2016-Dec 2016(8 Weeks Total)

This project is located in the Shijingshan District of Beijing Shougang industrial zone, the updated development area of Beijing Shougang industrial zone on Yongding river, east to west Chang 'an Street extension cord, the south to the Yongding River, north to Shougang industrial park area of 3.99 square kilometers between industrial heritage conservation. There is a large number of enterprises and transportation facilities around Shougang industrial zone. At the same time, the government of Shijingshan district defined this area as CRD area (central leisure business district) in 2008, which will provide development land and policy support for many small and medium-sized enterprises to start their own business and grow. The design of the high-rise building includes the design of high-rise office complex, the design of the podium and the renovation design of the surrounding old plant. Combining the unique environmental factors and cultural connotation of the site, the industrial elements are integrated into the design.

SHIJINGSHAN

BRIEF HISTORY OF SHOUGANG In Beijing Shijingshan District, driving on Chang'an Avenue's west along the line, thirty or forty meters high Brown blast furnace and a panoramic view of the lake and the chimney, surrounded by trees around, here is the Shijingshan old factory of Shougang. The impression of Shougang in the hearts of Beijing has been changing for several decades:It used to be the largest steel manufacturing plant in the country, but with the development of society and the need of environmental protection, iron and steel industry gradually moved out of the capital, Beijing. Today, the Shougang park is re - planned and repositioned, and the pride and glory of the former is about to come back to the eyes of the people.

2010 Shougang United Iron&Steel Co.,Ltd was shutdown Disappearing:China's NDRC has agreed to a structural adjustment and environmental governance programme for Shougang group. The No.5 blast furnace at ironworks was officially extinguished at 8 am on June 30.This marks the end of the industry in the Beijing region of Shougang.

WHAT IS OUR GOAL?

WHY DO WE WANT TO BE?

TO BE A BIRTHMARK OF THIS OLD SPACE TO BE A LANDMARK OF THIS NEW CITY

FOR THE CURIOSITY OF MODERN PEOPLE FOR THE MEMORY OF THE PAST

The new high-rise building in order to stimulate the vitality of the original site, showed the peculiar to Shougang industrial style to the modern people. At the same time, we hope that the employees who have worked in Shougang will return to it and feel it again.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games will be held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou. The organizers have already built their offices in Shougang. The move is bound to attract more visitors from around the world, and Shougang will bring its glorious history back to the public. With the relocation of industry, many old factories are threatened with demolition, and the industrial heritage will gradually disappear in our memory. Therefore, the protection of industrial heritage and the renovation of the old factory is imminent.

I try to do some new structure in the work. This old factory makes me realise the changes from industrial society to modern society. The appearance of Internet changes works in the ways and spaces,it changes human's life a lot.I try to show these turns in my work.People used to work together and did one same thing when industrial society, workers worked in factories and slept in dormitories. But now people can choose their own work style including where they work and who they want to work with etc. Sometimes people can sleep in their offices or choose to rest in home.So modern society makes the integration of work and rest into facts. I-beams are the essential constitutional unit in architectures. We are still using these amazing structures from industrial society to modern society. I find changes and the same by the using of I-beams and how Internet changed our life.So I try to show these points in this new high-rise building together. small space

MASTER PLAN

BUILDING FUNTION DISTRIBUTION Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

MODEL MAKING PROCESS To show and explain my work better, I always made models and only the structure parts. When doing the models, I tries many way to balance the high-rise building in its structures and also exterior (made the façade looks better). Then I made some “people” and put it into the model to feel this space.

06

TIME TRAVEL The idea of annexes' formation came from the structures of the factories here, by using the same structures to memory the ShouGang's blooming times when industrial society. I image that whatI could see from the annex if the ShouGang is still working. That could be an unbelievable travel: these factories are working, machines' sounds become louder and louder when you walk to the factories, the sky is extremely grey and nobody can recognize which is douds and which is smoke from chimneys. Wandering in the park and feeling the industrial atmosphere here, I cannot imagine the appearance of Internet andit can change US in lots of ways in our daily life.

INSIDE SPACES This section shows the structure and interspace of the high-rise building completely. At the same time, it also shows the division for the function of annexs: mainly for commeicial, induding restaurant shops and so on, secondly for official business, the only annex for working has its own entrance used only by stuffs.

Our design was initiated from the observation of the current situation of Beijing. We look forward to the opportunity of this design to find the existing difficulties in Beijing from a macro perspective and try to propose a way to respond. We have observed the current problems in Beijing : 1. In the tide of urban construction, the buildings and urban fabric of the old city with preserved value are constantly disappearing and replaced by modern buildings that conflict with the surrounding fabric scale. 2. In the reconstruction and construction, the status of the city overrides the "people", and the pleasant urban scale no longer exists, and the people who are the main characters of the city are ignored. We are planning for the future of Beijing is gradually to the function of the development of high strength core cities, the formation of multi-center system, deep around the new center is independent of the service and improve the rail transit system and make the new central district can operate independently, do not need to rely on the old city district development, avoid the necessity of traffic through the old people.

Expected Result

In order to alleviate the phenomenon of Beijing's excessive urbanization, the government put forward the idea of "two axes, two belts and multiple centers", trying to change the type of Beijing single center development, but the results are not effective. At present, Beijing is still developing in the same scale as the original development form, while the old city at the core is under great pressure to develop, and a batch of traditional courtyard houses and hutongs have been pushed down. The precious texture of the old city is gradually disappear.

Zhu Tianyuan Creative Neighborhood, Cultural Block PlanningďźŒ Open Space Design Nov 2017-Dec 2017(8 Weeks Total)

The proposed site is located in Liangzhu Culture Village, Yuhang District, Hangzhou, and the community is green and sports ground in the south. The land for the project is located in the central open space of the jade bird tassel block. The northwest is the built creative street (designed by Qi Xin and Zhang Lei), the northeast is the urban green space, the east side is the built cultural center (designed by Tadao Ando), and the south side is adjacent to the city. On the west side, there are parking lots, food street food fields and bus stops. In the planning, the relationship between functional division, traffic organization and landscape environment treatment of the project is discussed, and the relationship and processing methods of space, path, boundary, region, node and landmark in the building group are mastered. Inject new vitality into the neighborhood. In architectural design, explore the expression of commercial, cultural and creative architectural character and its design language and techniques. Master the methods of architectural design innovation in special locations, deepen understanding of the relationship between architecture and regional, historical, social, cultural and environmental, and integrate architecture with community life.

URBAN TEXTURE STUDY At the beginning of the design, we have carried out some research on the urban textures with relative characteristics around the world. Because of the different geographical locations of the cities and the different countries, the corresponding cultural characteristics have different characteristics of the city. Putting a 200x200m square grid on top of the urban texture, it can be seen that the scale of each city block is different. In comparison, in terms of crowd comfort, small-scale neighborhoods and buildings give users a more comfortable feel.

Fast-Forwarding to a Future of On-Demand Urban Air Transportation Task: Urban Vertiport design of Uber Location: Los Angeles, USA Partner:

MA Gewenxin

Role:

Uber VTOLs,Vertiports and Vertistops,Landing spots Transportation hub Aug 2018-Sept 2018

Date:

Imagine traveling from San Francisco’s Marina to work in downtown San Jose—a drive that would normally occupy the better part of two hours—in only 15 minutes. What if you could save nearly four hours round-trip between São Paulo’s city center and the suburbs in Campinas? Or imagine reducing your 90-plus minute stop-and-go commute from Gurgaon to your office in central New Delhi to a mere six minutes. On-demand aviation , has the potential to radically improve urban mobility, giving people back time lost in their daily commutes. Uber is close to the commute pain that citizens in cities around the world feel. We view helping to solve this problem as core to our mission and our commitment to our rider base. Just as skyscrapers allowed cities to use limited land more efficiently, urban air transportation will use three-dimensional airspace to alleviate transportation congestion on the ground. A network of small, electric aircraft that take off and land vertically (called VTOL aircraft for Vertical Take-off and Landing , and pronounced vee-tol ), will enable rapid, reliable transportation between suburbs and cities and, ultimately, within cities. I did a research and found that Uber intends to develop VTOL to fundamentally improve urban mobility, giving people back time lost in their daily commutes. But there is not enough space to satisfy the VTOL's take-off and landing. So I decided to choose a transportation hub like Los Angeles's union station and add the VTOL vertispots to the existing rail, subway and bus systems, making VTOL to be a possible and convenient commuting method in the future.

PUBLIC ACTIVITIES ANALYSIS Due to the development of the entertainment industry, industry and commerce, and tourism, there is tremendous pressure on traffic in the Los Angeles area. The travel time and behavioral activities of people in different industries have their own characteristics. Although Los Angeles has developed traffic, it still causes serious traffic congestion during peak hours.I conducted a survey of human activities for various industries, with the aim of better understanding the current situation of people's travel, so that VTOLs can be used to solve existing traffic problems.
