*Perhaps the lovely state of Pennsylvania.

Mount Ruapehu blows its top Trampers narrowly escape fury of the mountain three australians on holiday were taken by surprise — as well as GNS’s lead volcanologists — as Mt. Ruapehu unexpectedly erupted last night. The three climbers were about halfway up the summit of Ruapehu before they began to feel the first tremors. “At first we didn’t think much of it,” Brent Jacobs said. “We checked with the DOC Ranger before heading out in the morning and everything looked great. The weather was perfect. No signs of activity on Ruapehu” Jacobs and his group continued up the mountain for another 20 minutes before realizing what was actually happening. “We looked up and suddenly there were massive vents of smoke rising from the top, and heaps of massive molten rocks flying toward us. The ground was shaking so bad we could barely stand. We took off as fast as we could down the mountain, and probably made it down in about a quarter of the time it took to go up.”

The GNS was just as surprised by the eruption. “Nature is unpredictable,” Brian Carter exclaimed. “We have teams out there constantly monitoring the volcanoes, looking for signs of activity. This one just completely took us by surprise. Luckily not many people were on the mountain.” Meanwhile, surrounding towns and villages have been evacuated, and a camp has been set up outside of Taumaranui to provide basic necessities for displaced residents. No major damage has been reported yet, but the activity shows no signs of slowing down. The DOC has closed all major roads in the area and is prohibiting entry into the park until further notice. Ruapehu’s last eruption in 2007 sent a lahar carrying approximately 1.4 million cubic meters of mud, rock, and water down the Whangaehu river. The events of this story are completely fictitious.

The Story otari, Travis Kochel’s first type effort, aims to capture the essence of Wellington, New Zealand in a single typeface. The contrast of a colorful art scene and the conservative colonial British aesthetic, which is still evident in the capital city, laid the groundwork for this design. Otari is vibrant and contemporary, but serious and built to last. Its character shines in display type, but doesn’t interfere at text sizes. The name Otari is a nod to the Otari-Wilton Bush, a fantastic natural reserve in Wellington, where a number of the initial sketches were produced. T HE DES IGNER Travis Kochel grew up in rural Pennsylvania, and attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008. Travis is currently based in Wellington, New Zealand, where he makes a living as a self-employed graphic designer, focusing spare energy on type design, screenprinting and hiking around the country.
