The Beauty of Geometry Rational, mysterious, sacred...

individual/ interaction design/ after graduation/ Arduino, Processing, distance sensor & 3D printing

05

01 | Rational, mysterious, sacred...

In this project, I want to breathe life into geometry and I wanted it to embody my presence by employing Processing, Arduino, distance sensor and 3D printing. When I extend my hand toward the 3D-printing sculpture, the image expands as if it wants to embrace me; when I withdraw my hand, the image shrinks as if it feels alienated; when I simply stare at it, the image just “breathes” peacefully, as if it’s staring at me too... I wanted to explore the beauty of geometry by experimenting with the interaction between people and images.

INSPIRATION

During my sophomore year, I drew inspiration from Dutch graphic designer Escher and the movie Inception. My crew and I completed an installation named Inception which explored the possibility of combining two and three-dimensional images in a certain way. After finishing this project, I was overwhelmed by the lucid, mysterious and sacred beauty elicited by the geometric figure properties.

02 ď˝œ Entertaining & interactive andition device for music store

Music Shelf is an entertaining & interactive audition machine. It was showcased in our school and was awarded Best Interactive Installation at the Arduino Show. In the era of digital music, many people believe that CDs are now obsolete. However, for people my age, especially for those who enjoy music, there remains an emotional attachment to CDs. The very act of inserting CDs into a CD player, watching them spin, and waiting for the music to flow is really pleasing and calms some people down. That is why we decided to preserve the act and simulate the experience by applying Flash and Arduino to streamline use and to engage more people.

INTERACTION DESIGN

MUSIC SHELF

PROBLEM FINDING

BAD APPEARENCE | the plastic cover and metal string make the machine look cheap and bland. Also, it doesn't quite fit in with the music store's design theme. UNSANITARY | The headset is not suitable for public use for sanitary and hygienic reasons. UNFIT INTERFACE | The more customers who use the machine, the bigger the chance of boosting sales. So the audition machine should not have a song selection because it may cause overuse and could decrease their need to purchase once they hear songs they don't like.

After deciding what we do, the groups work independently, but consistently check on the other group's work to ensure efficiency and to make sure one part can be integrated with another. The nine-grid diary, also known as the renowned morning diary, was created by Misaki Sato. It encourages people to clear their minds of their daily work and mood in the morning. The nine-gird template is the highlight of the Grid Diary. It not only divides the screen into 9 girds, but also divides your diary into 8 questions (1 question for the current date and weather). By answering these questions, you can easily record your daily life while developing a steady habit of keeping a diary.

However, we would like people to make it their own: each grid represents a different aspect of life.

The Chinese enjoy tea and they valued the tea sets. They have considered employing the tea sets into the valuation of teaism. Also, product similarity is a current issue in the tea product market as well as the large gap in the youth market.

Having analysised the defects of the exsicting system, we came up with the new system map which is more eco-friendly and effective.

Win-Win is a system where people donate, sell and buy second-hand clothes. The major engine that drives the Win-Win system is the Win-Win car. It is an integration of the delivery system and the second-hand clothes boutique. Not only does it solve the problem of clothes "stockpiling", it also provides work opportunities for students.

Scissors are common appliances in our daily lives. However, when it comes to culinary shears, especially in China, things are different. In order to design scissors for Chinese kitchens, we did several field studies and even let a chef cook dinner for us using only scissors to prepare food in order to discover the existing issues. Finally we completed the model by employing phenolic foam.
