2010 ANNUAL REPORT
SEIZING OPPORTUNITY In his first two years at Xavier, Richard Balatgas ’12 was part of the mock trial group, wrote news stories for the Review, Xavier’s student newspaper, joined the current events club and started to advance through the ranks as a member of the JROTC Regiment while also serving on the regimental staff. All this, combined with his course load of honors classes and an AP course during sophomore year, have led him to take on long, 12-hour days on a routine basis, but Richard says that his busy schedule has taught him valuable lessons in time management. Even though half of his Xavier experience still lies ahead, last summer the future was on the forefront of Richard’s mind. In July — in the weeks after his first CFX Service Trip to Tennessee — Richard enrolled in an environmental health and justice course at Johns Hopkins University through Discover Hopkins. The intensive program introduces students to engaging topics through exposure to leading experts and first-hand research. Richard and other students took air and soil samples from a Baltimore suburb and evaluated pollution levels following a cityfunded system put in place two years ago after ground and air contamination. In the end, the class presented its results to the mayor’s office and was awarded certificates from both the mayor and the EPA. “The program really gave you an insight into how Johns Hopkins is run. I lived on the campus with students from across the country, and even from around the world,” he said. “The research we did showed that environmental damage is really the culmination of everything we do.” Richard had been interested in the Johns Hopkins campus ever since middle school, when he won a university-sponsored academic contest for intelligent youth and took a writing seminar there the summer after seventh grade. He hopes to study there as an undergrad majoring in pre-med and neuroscience. “The teachers at Xavier help you and find the time in their schedule to give you a chance to succeed,” he said. “I have a lot of friends at other schools, and I appreciate the time that Xavier teachers take to make their courses challenging. It confirms the perspective that we really are studying at a college prep school and that we’re being well-prepared for the future.” 53
