COMING BACK HOME For Pete Seccia ’85, the youngest member of the Board of Trustees, Xavier was home to the most formative four years of his life. Pete’s accomplishments as a bright student, an all-conference member of Xavier’s 1985 football team and, later that same year, a critical part of the powerhouse national championship rugby team, enabled him to walk down the aisle at St. Patrick’s Cathedral with pride. Playing football at the college level at Stony Brook and earning recognition as an Academic All-American were the culmination of the strong work ethic Pete credits to Xavier. Those accomplishments, however, paled in comparison to his days on 16th Street. In addition to his high school experiences, the relationships he had begun would also impact the rest of his life. More than with any one other Xavier figure, Pete remained close friends with Rev. Vin Biagi, S.J. ’67, whose presence helped Pete and many other students to mature and to grow. Other friendships Pete began and nurtured at Xavier would go on to withstand both distance and time; shortly after college graduation, Pete moved overseas for the next 20 years, as he started his career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs. On a consistent basis, Pete has shared some of his career successes with Xavier in the form of major financial support, contributing at the $100,000 benefactor level for the first time in fiscal year 2010. He contributes with confidence, knowing that today’s students learn the same life lessons he is proud to have first encountered at an early age on 16th Street. “I still lean on some of those great building blocks I first encountered when I was 15 years old,” he said. “The way I treat others, and the way I expect to be treated were all part of the fabric of life at Xavier.” Today, Pete is a partner at Goldman Sachs and lives in Manhattan. He serves on both the Xavier Board of Trustees and the finance committee, while also dedicating himself to several rugby organizations. “Even after I moved overseas, I was always in touch with a core group of friends, teammates from football and rugby, and other Xavier people I had ties to in other areas, even just during study periods,” Pete said. “From the time you walk in the doors of Xavier, you’re really taught to be independent. That really prepared me for an easy transition to college and readied me for my career.” 22
