MAYOR’S MESSAGE

UPGRADING THE ROADS you rely on…

It’s an exciting time to be living in Wyndham City. Just last month we saw construction commence on the redevelopment of Wyndham Park in the Werribee City Centre. Located on the banks of the picturesque Werribee River, this natural asset is something that really sets us apart from other activity centres across the western suburbs.

Wyndham City has been busy upgrading roads throughout the City to reduce congestion and improve safety.

Our vision for this redevelopment is to see the park transformed into a recreation and events space of regional significance. Once complete, it will include play spaces, a large events lawn, seating, picnic spaces, barbecues, a massive new playground and more.

FORSYTH ROAD

We’re looking forward to celebrating this new park once it opens up late next year. This is part of our plan to revitalise the City Centre through a range of key developments. The reactivation of the Bridge Hotel, and four developments on Council-owned car parks which comprise apartment buildings, office space, and a hotel.

Works have commenced on the upgrade of Forsyth Road, between Old Geelong Road and Sayers Road in Hoppers Crossing. These upgrades will see the number of lanes increase from two to four, along with a new signalised intersection at Waterways Boulevard, and a pedestrian crossing at the Federation Trail.

These projects will really boost our local economy and enhance the liveability of the City Centre.

This $7.5 million Wyndham City project will improve safety and ease congestion, getting drivers home to their families sooner.

To keep up to date on these projects as they’re underway, or any upcoming events across the City Centre, be sure to ‘like’ our dedicated Werribee City Centre Facebook page.

BOUNDARY ROAD A 2.8 kilometre gravel stretch of Boundary Road, between Derrimut Road and the Regional Rail Link over pass, will be sealed and shoulders upgraded.

Thank you, Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Peter Maynard. www.facebook.com/WerribeeCityCentre

Our aim is to have this section of works complete by the time the State Government’s Major Roads Project Authority ramps up its upgrade of Leakes, Derrimut and Dohertys Roads, so drivers have an alternative route to access the Freeway and surrounding arterial roads. A section of Boundary Road, between Derrimut and Woods Roads, will be closed throughout construction. The upgrade of Boundary Road is a $4.1 million Wyndham City project.

LITTLE RIVER ROADS Two roads in Little River have been given a new lease on life, with works wrapping up on the reconstruction of Rothwell and Flinders Streets. Both roads are well-used by Little River locals and visitors, providing as important links to the local primary school, kindergartens, local businesses, and more. www.wyndham.vic.gov.au

Help shape Wyndham

Spotlight on grants Each year Wyndham City runs a Community Grants Program, investing funds back into projects, events and groups that help to strengthen our sense of community.

If you’ve got an idea, project or improvement that you would like to see in Wyndham, now’s your chance to have your say. Council is in the early stages of planning the Annual Plan and Budget for the 2019/20 financial year which will outline the priorities for Council to deliver in the next financial year.

As part of the 2017/18 Community Grants Program, we invested almost half a million dollars into our community. One of the many recipients was WynBay Blue Light, who received $8,300 to fund a leadership camp. Family Friendly Portfolio Holder Cr Shaw said; “The camps help build the confidence, fitness and leadership skills of the young people taking part, which will have benefits for the broader community.” Run by police officers and other volunteers, the leadership camp brings together young people from different cultural backgrounds, and other at-risk young people. For more information on this year’s grant recipients visit: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/grants

There are a number of ways you can get involved: Head to The Loop, Council’s online engagement platform, contribute your ideas until 14 December, 2018 or Come along to a Community Conversations with your local Ward Councillors where you can contribute your thoughts and feedback and get an insight into the planning process. Chaffey Ward: Wednesday 12 December, 6pm – 8pm, Tarneit Library, 150 Sunset Boulevard, Tarneit Harrison Ward: Monday 10 December, 6pm – 8pm, Saltwater Community Centre, 153 Saltwater Promenade, Point Cook Iramoo Ward: Thursday 6 December, 6pm – 8pm, Eagle Stadium, 35 Ballan Road, Werribee https://theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au

THE ANNUAL COMMUNITY SATISFACTION SURVEY IS BACK.

Pictured: Shirley Hewitt, Wyndham Resident and Miriam Beasley, Wyndham City staff member

Surveyors from Metropolis Research are knocking on doors across Wyndham, asking residents for their feedback on Council services. The survey seeks 1,200 responses to understand community satisfaction across a number of key areas, from Council’s customer experience and service delivery, to our performance and strategic delivery. There will also be questions around community safety, healthy living and travel. The survey will help Council to identify community expectations of the

Playful Times Ahead for the Young at Heart

organisation, assisting us to understand what we’re doing well, where we can improve, and how to better plan to meet the needs of residents.

Wyndham City opened its first ever Seniors Exercise park on 10 October 2018

Interviewers will be undertaking the research via door to door interviews. They will hold clear identification cards while conducting interviews.

This exercise park aims to improve physical activity and social interaction for our more senior residents and is even an opportunity for them to ‘play’ together with their grandkids. Featuring state of the art equipment, Council has delivered this exciting project in partnership with the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI), and with funding support from Gandel Philanthrophy. A series of instructional videos will be available online to show users how to use the equipment.

Council is also planning to upgrade the Central Park Community Centre and the children’s playground located at 80 Lonsdale Circuit, Hoppers Crossing. Pictured: Wayne & Linda Saunders

The National Disability Insurance Agency is also expected to open in this precinct in early November 2018, as one of multiple sites helping people across Melbourne’s west. In the same precinct is the Wyndham Private Medical Centre, with 16 GPs working seven days a week, and more than 70 specialists – including cardiology, gynaecology, neurology, psychiatry, rheumatology and much more. Those in need of radiology, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, can access the services at the MIA Wyndham Radiology Centre located at Wyndham Private Medical Centre. Neighbouring this site is the Wyndham Clinic Private Hospital, a state of the art facility that services all of Melbourne’s West with services in mental health and day surgery. Wyndham City will continue to work with providers of health and community services to ensure that the future needs of the growing Wyndham community can be met. We’re looking forward to seeing this site continue to expand, to meet the needs of our growing city.

In each edition of Wyndham News we’ve been giving you an insight into Wyndham City’s 12 Councillor Portfolios. CR TONY HOOPER Arts, Culture and Heritage This portfolio embraces the local arts community to support and encourage creativity in the community. Public art projects, community art education and skill development are just some of the many areas covered by this portfolio. Cr Hooper said it was an exciting time in his portfolio, with some impressive pieces of public art going up across Wyndham. “We’ve just seen two amazing public artworks commissioned and installed in the Werribee City Centre, through an agreement between business owners, businesses and the Wyndham Business and Tourism Association,” Cr Hooper said.

“Go check out the works at the laneway to Werribee River Reserve, and the second is on the Coles building.” “We’ve also just seen another brilliant piece go up at the Point Cook Community Learning Centre, which really brings a burst of colour to the building.”

“Public art transforms our centres, neighbourhoods and open spaces.” “It contributes to our sense of place and reflects our community and culture. Council’s investment in public art helps to enhance the liveability of our communities and positions Wyndham as a City with a contemporary outlook.”

CR PETER MAYNARD (MAYOR) Growth and Transport This portfolio takes on ways to manage growth and looking at the municipality as a whole to investigate how integrated planning can be applied to accommodate growth. It also aims to ensure that development is sustainable, and the transport needs of the community are met, and the liveability is improved. Cr Peter Maynard said that Council had been busy planning and delivering infrastructure across the municipality. “At our recent Ordinary Council Meeting we awarded the contracts for a range of projects across Wyndham,” Cr Maynard said. “The interim upgrade of Boundary Road in Tarneit, sealing the gravel road is one project. We also awarded contracts for the reconstruction of three streets in Werribee – Gibbons Street, Greaves Street North and Wanderer Court.”

“This shows Council’s commitment to delivering the infrastructure our community needs.” “We’ve got a range of capital works projects underway across our City. A new online platform, the Capital Works Dashboard, that we’ve recently launched gives residents the opportunity to check out what’s happening near them – or anywhere across the municipality.” “I encourage residents to use this tool and see some of the really exciting projects going on around Wyndham.”

More trees for Wyndham

Wyndham’s annual tree planting program has wrapped up for the year, and more than 3,900 trees have been planted throughout the City. Residents who have had a new tree planted on their nature strip are encouraged to lend a hand by providing extra water, particularly during the months of low rainfall. In terms of pruning the tree or removing stakes – Council staff will be taking care of this to ensure the tree establishes and remains healthy. The program will continue in 2019, with planning underway to plant 7,000 trees throughout our neighbourhoods. Planting typically occurs between April and August. This is all part of our plan to achieve 25% tree canopy over Wyndham by 2040. To see which streets near you will receive a new tree visit https://digital.wyndham.vic.gov.au/treeplanting
