Dear Friends, For nearly 75 years, Wyandot Behavioral Health Network (Wyandot BHN) has served Wyandotte County residents by providing accessible and affordable behavioral health treatment and housing services. We pride ourselves on being an organization that is community-based, person-centered and trauma-informed. As our community continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are ready to respond and grow to meet the needs of our community. With our primary service locations further west, Wyandot BHN does not currently provide services in the downtown area of Kansas City, Kansas. Yet, many of our consumers and a high percentage of children and adults who are underserved live in the downtown, northeast and Central Avenue areas of Wyandotte County. We want to make sure these individuals and families have convenient access to behavioral health services. That is why we are thrilled to partner with Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC), Swope Health, Kansas City Kansas Public Schools, the YMCA and CommunityAmerica Credit Union to build the Kansas City Kansas Downtown Community Education, Health and Wellness Campus. Through our shared vision to create systematic change, the new state-of-the-art Center will provide social and economic mobility for generations. Our partnership will allow us to provide our residents with easily accessible education, health and wellness care, and financial education. Serving as an anchor institution for a vibrant Kansas City, Kansas, the Center will serve as a national model for collaboration for real community change. The Center will allow Wyandot BHN to deliver services where our residents live, work, and raise their families. We know that individuals are much more likely to access care where they feel comfortable and welcome. Wyandot BHN will be available to provide services for KCKCC students and their families to reduce the emotional stress from trauma, depression and anxiety for students—freeing their mind to be open for learning. By providing mental health treatment and support, we will give individuals and families the tools they need to thrive—at work, at school and in the community. Join us as we look to make real, lasting change in Wyandotte County. This is our next step in furthering our vision of Healthy Minds. Healthy Lives. Thriving Community. Sincerely,

* The formation of the Capital Campaign Steering Committee continues as we recruit additional members.

Randy Callstrom President/CEO

As a community-based organization, we believe in providing care and treatment in a space that is convenient, welcoming and close to home.

The Mental Health Crisis Mental health challenges have reached crisis levels for our children, teens, co-workers, friends and loved ones. Before COVID-19, 1 in 5 adults and 17 percent of children in the U.S. experienced symptoms of a mental illness. Months into this global health crisis, social isolation, grief, trauma, conflict and uncertainty have caused a second health crisis–a mental health crisis that will be with us for years without access to quality care and treatment. 21% of people experiencing homelessness have a serious mental illness

37% of people incarcerated in state and federal prisons have a diagnosed mental illness

The effects of untreated mental illness

70% of youth involved with the criminal justice system have at least one diagnosable mental health condition Depression and anxiety disorders alone cost the global economy $1 trillion each year

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-34, with young adults at high risk

The toll of mental health challenges on individual lives is devastating, often causing damaged personal relationships, unemployment, bankruptcy, homelessness, increased chance of victimization and higher rates of incarceration and substance use. Untreated mental illness is associated with higher rates of chronic medical conditions. And on average, adults die 25 years earlier than their peers, primarily from treatable illness. The significant delays in identifying symptoms and accessing treatment further complicate the already detrimental impact of mental health challenges on individuals, families and communities. Research has shown that many of the children, adults and families who live in the downtown, northeast and Central Avenue areas of Wyandotte County are underserved. With our current service locations based further west, these underserved residents and our current consumers who live in or near downtown Kansas City, Kansas, do not have access to or knowledge of the quality behavioral health care we offer. 2

Wyandot Behavioral Health Network

Barriers to Treatment • Not knowing when to reach out for professional help • Not knowing how treatment could help • Not knowing where to access care • Lack of medical coverage combined with a lack of knowledge of free or low-cost treatment options

• Inadequate social support systems • Pervasive stigma of mental illness and mistrust of service providers and care systems • Practical barriers such as lack of transportation and difficulty scheduling appointments

The average time between onset of mental health symptoms and diagnosis and treatment of a mental health condition is 11 years.

Individual Impact The welcoming space of the downtown service location will reduce barriers to accessing treatment by increasing visibility of and access to mental health services for our residents, students and clients. The convenient location will make it easier for individuals to seek treatment and resources in a space that feels familiar and close to home. For many consumers, this will mean:

Improved psychiatric care and medication management

Increased access to care for individuals involved in the drug and behavioral health and juvenile court systems

Increased behavioral health and primary care coordination

Reduced practical barriers to services

Ensured access to a qualified and timely assessment

Improved access to primary care and substance use treatment

Adults who access treatment for mental health conditions show decreased symptoms and 80 to 90% find that treatment improves their quality of life.
