CA M PA I G N N E W S L E T T E R FALL 2017 • VOLUME 2 • No. 1

Dear Alumni & Friends of UNA, It has been a pleasure to serve as the co-chairs of the University of North Alabama’s comprehensive campaign. We have watched many loyal individuals come forward to support the University’s efforts to create new programs, support faculty research, begin construction on academic buildings, and increase the amount of scholarship money to support student success. We are grateful for the generosity of these donors. We have raised over $33 million for the campaign, which is to be commended, but we need your support to reach our goal of $35 million. There are many great things going on at the University, especially with the leadership of university president Ken Kitts, and we want UNA to continue to reach new heights of excellence in everything they do. Your gift, no matter the amount, will help us reach our goal. Please donate today! Roar Lions, Laura ’55 & Don Harrison Cincinnati, Ohio

Alberta Doss Gore Endowed Scholarship Precious Jimbola Senior, Nursing “This scholarship is empowering me, and I hope in the nearest future that this seed of generosity does not die with me, as I in turn will be giving back to the society that is building me into a great woman.”

Dear Members of the UNA Family, What a joy and privilege it is to serve my alma mater in helping to raise money for our comprehensive campaign, and doing that by working alongside fantastic volunteers who are very dedicated to making UNA even greater than it already is. We have individuals who provide strong leadership on our Foundation board of directors, alumni association board, alumni clubs, board of trustees, or serve in a variety of other positions, choosing to provide not only service but financial contributions to support the campaign. I am very grateful for these volunteers who have helped lead the way in our campaign. But everyone can play an important part in our quest to raise money to build better programs, increase student scholarships, and assist our faculty in providing the best opportunities for our students. Will you please help? We encourage your participation in our campaign, and you can do that in many ways. You can always, and easily, give online by visiting una.edu/campaign/ give.html. You can mail a check to the UNA Foundation, UNA Box 5113, Florence, AL 35632. You can also mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 28, when we will hold our second annual Day of Giving, which is a social media campaign to raise money in a 24-hour period. Thank you for believing in the University of North Alabama. Roar Lions! Dr. Debbie Shaw ‘82 Vice President for Advancement & Executive Director UNA Foundation

Abati Senior, Management “By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus on the most important aspect of school, learning. FLOWERS HALL $ 2.5 MILLION RENOVATION

When Flowers Hall opened on the campus as a physical education, recreation, intramural, and athletics venue in 1972, it was a state-of-the-art facility — so much so that it hosted an NBA basketball game between the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks as one of its first official events. Now, some 45 years later, the majority of the venue has seen few, if any, updates and the University has plans to move forward with a $ 2.5 million renovation. The planned renovations, which will include a new wood floor, new seating, hospitality area, video production room and video boards, are critical to the future use of Flowers Hall and will benefit current and future students and studentathletes, according to UNA Athletic Director Mark Linder. Flowers Hall is not only the home of the UNA volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams, but is also the site for physical education classes, concerts, student events, and University commencements. “We want to have a safe, friendly, clean atmosphere for our fans when they come to our campus,” said Linder. “Flowers Hall is a 45-year old facility that has seen limited investment over the years. Our current wood floor is too thin to sand and

re-finish and the wooden bleachers are the same system that was installed 45 years ago. They need to be replaced.” Linder said the broadcast and hospitality enhancements are also important to the University going forward.

UNA SPORTSMAN’S CLUB

“Beginning in 2018-19, all of our home men and women’s basketball games will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the electronic updates will help us provide a quality broadcast,” said Linder. “It will also help us partner with the Communications, Broadcast, and Film students on campus to provide opportunities for internships and work experience that should enhance their resumes.” Linder said the recent record income from Sportsman’s Club memberships that has topped $150,000 for the first time also creates a need for an improved hospitality area. “With the increases in revenue that we have seen from corporate partners, donors and Sportsman’s Club members, we need to create a hospitality area for the people who support our vision and are investing in it,” he said.

IMPACT OF QUALITY FACILITIES

Quality facilities are a major tool in recruiting. New facilities are often the tipping point for prospective student-athletes and also attract top-tier coaches. When the best student-athletes and coaches are recruited, winning becomes a direct result. In return, winning energizes our fan base and leads to increased ticket sales. These larger and more engaged crowds make it very attractive for corporate partners to advertise and give to UNA.

“UNA and the Sportsman’s Club has given me more than just an opportunity. They have given me a blessing that I will forever be grateful for. To play college football at UNA will always be a highlight in my life, and for this, I want to thank UNA and the Sportsman’s Club for making it happen. Being a Lion has taught me more than just winning. It has taught me humility, hard work, perseverance and responsibility. The championship rings we earned have been generously paid for by our donors, and I am truly appreciative for that. UNA has not only given me the opportunity to strive for my dreams, but also the opportunity to better myself as a man academically, athletically, but most importantly, in life.”

CULINARY

Frances P. and James C. Barber Endowed Scholarship Huong (Heidi) Pham Senior, Accounting “Your scholarship not only means a lot to me, but also my parents. Although I work a part-time job to pay for all my living expenses, the out-of-state tuition and international fees is a burden to my family. Thanks to you, this burden is lighter. I cannot use words to fully express my appreciation.”

DEMONSTRATION STUDIO As an accomplished 30+ year industry expert who knows a few things about demonstration studios, Gloria Aday is passionate about this field. Upon graduating from UNA as a home economist, she used those skills in her career including sales, marketing, and training. Through these various leadership roles she developed a passion for the value of a state-of-the-art Culinary Demonstration Studio. It is no surprise that she has provided funding to equip UNA’s Human Sciences, Hospitality, and Design Culinary Demonstration Studio with the latest equipment, cabinets, and countertops.

“My career started in the Virginia Electric & Power Company Demonstration Kitchen, and I used those skills throughout my career as a Home Economist in sales and training. I decided to fund the Demonstration Studio, as it was an immediate way to help the most students in Human Sciences, Hospitality, and Design. It is exciting to be a part of providing this opportunity for the students, and the department where I got my start. If this studio helps one student discover his or her career, I will be thrilled.” — Gloria Aday ‘70 and Macon Jones

PARENTS HONOR LATE University of North Alabama Alumna Angela and Michael Vaughan honored the memory of their daughter Tiffany Paige Ferguson ’15 the best way they knew how: by trying to help someone else, much like their daughter did. Ferguson was a 2015 graduate of the Anderson College of Nursing and was working as a nurse at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville before her life was tragically cut short. Now the Vaughans have created an endowed scholarship in her honor. The new Tiffany Paige Ferguson Nursing Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a first or second year nursing student who has been accepted into the nursing program. The recipient must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need based on the current and future needbased guidelines of the University. The Dean of the Anderson College of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Services will ultimately make the selection.

Giving Tuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. Held each year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. On November 28, the University of North Alabama will focus on generating participation throughout the campus and among alumni and friends for the second annual UNA Giving Day. During this 24hour fundraising drive, you will have the opportunity to make a difference for the students of UNA and the community as a whole.

How Can I Help?

Last November, the University of North Alabama Foundation hosted the first ever UNA Giving Day. The initial goal was to receive gifts from 100 donors. The support received that day exceeded all expectations, resulting in 224 donors helping to raise over $41,000.

CHALLENGE YOUR FRIENDS

One of the greatest aspects of UNA Giving Day is that the primary use of email and social media to promote the fundraising-drive keeps operating expenses extremely low, all while allowing the Foundation to reach alumni and friends residing around the world. Our goal this year is to increase overall participation and reach more first-time donors. Collectively, participation at any level makes a significant impact.

PARTICIPATE

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. CST, Nov. 28, you can make a gift online by visiting the Giving Day website.

una.edu/dayofgiving SHARE THE MESSAGE

Be sure to post on social media about UNA Giving Day and share that you gave. Tell your UNA story! This day is all about teamwork and encouraging your peers. Once you make a gift, share it on Facebook and challenge your friends by tagging them in the post.

Faculty and Staff Help Build the Pride The UNA Foundation launched its first ever Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign in fall 2016. At the time, giving participation among full-time campus employees was 30.2 percent. By the close of the campaign, giving had increased 18 percent to an alltime high of 48 percent. It is a Foundation priority to develop and maintain a strong culture of giving from within the University, reflective of the passion faculty and staff have for Campaign committee members Dr. the mission of UNA. Following Lisa Clayton ’00 and Dr. Jeffrey Bibbee encourage faculty and staff donors to a successful first campaign, the wear their campaign lapel pin. second annual Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign launched this fall. Between October 1 and December 31, faculty and staff are encouraged to support any fund or campus area they choose with a monetary gift. Donations of any amount are beneficial; therefore, a greater emphasis is placed on participation. The campaign goal for 2017 is to increase overall employee giving from 48 percent to 55 percent.

GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE A gift of a whole or universal life insurance policy is an excellent way to make a gift to the University of North Alabama. You might wish to make UNA the owner and beneficiary of a new life insurance policy, or you might want to repurpose a policy that has outlasted its original intent (for example, you may have purchased a policy for minor children who are now financially independent adults). The benefit of a gift of life insurance to the University of North Alabama is that you can receive a charitable income tax deduction. If UNA is named as the beneficiary of your policy, the proceeds of your policy will be paid to our organization upon your death so that we can use the gift to further our institutional mission. To make a gift of life insurance, please contact your life insurance provider to request the necessary forms to make the University of North Alabama the owner and beneficiary of your policy.

After President Kitts announced the 2017/2018 Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign, students helped host an ice cream social to show their appreciation.

As the Foundation draws closer to reaching the $35 million goal, support from our faculty and staff makes a real difference. We commend all of the individuals who already dedicate so much of their time and energy to teaching and creating a great environment for student success; those who choose to contribute monetarily in addition are truly part of what makes UNA such an outstanding institution.

In addition, please let us know if you have already named UNA as an owner or beneficiary of your life insurance policy. We would like to thank you and recognize you as part of our Legacy Society for your gift. If you have questions about making a gift of a life insurance policy, please contact the Advancement Office at 256.765.4670. 11
