"

According to TIAA’s Lifetime Income Survey, having guaranteed monthly income is becoming more and more important. Diane Garnick, chief income strategist at TIAA, offered these tips on how to turn your retirement savings into income for life.

Economists had forecast that the value of all the goods and services America produced last quarter increased by 1.3%, according to Bloomberg..

Boomer: When will I know if I am financially ready to retire?

"

Recent data on consumers, including a measure of confidence that rose to a post-recession high in September, should still bode well, said Tony Bedikian, head of global markets at Citizens Bank. "I don't think there are any signs that the consumer will get derailed in the near or medium term," he said. ► GDP was revised up from a

second estimate of 1.1% after more robust data showed business spending on equipment and plants was stronger than previously thought.

According to the Society of Actuaries, a 65-yearold man today has a 41% chance of living to age 85, while a 65-year-old woman has a 53% chance of living to age 85. If the man and woman are married, there's a 72% chance that one of them will live to age 85 and a 45% chance that one will live to age 90. With that being the case, it’s no surprise that many worry they will outlive their retirement nest egg.

The US economy grew by 1.4% in the second quarter, according to the Commerce Department's third estimate of gross domestic product (GDP).

The final estimate, pending future annual revisions, reflected a now familiar picture of sluggish growth held up mostly by strong consumer spending.

FRONT PAGE

The US economy was stronger

Last quarter than

we first thought

Personal consumption was revised downward by a hair to 4.3% from 4.4%, which was the most since Q4 2014. Core personal-consumption expenditures

— a measure of inflation that excludes volatile food and energy prices — rose by 1.8%, unchanged from the second estimate. The release also showed that corporate

profits fell by $12.5 billion in the second quarter, down from an increase of $66 billion in the first. America's largest public companies reported a fourth-straight quarterly drop in profits in Q2.

Garnick: There are three simple steps for knowing when you are ready to retire. First, figure out how much money you need each month to cover your basic expenses (food, shelter, clothing & healthcare). Second, speak with a financial advisor to see how much savings it will take to provide guaranteed lifetime income to at least cover those necessities. Finally, make sure you have sufficient savings for the fun and necessary additional spending you will want to have throughout retirement. These crucial steps to achieving retirement readiness ensure that you will have a guaranteed monthly income in addition to what you’ve set aside for retirement. That way, even after you retire, you will still have a steady stream of income on top of the financial cushion you’ve built up over the years. As it turns out, while most Americans know this to be a good strategy, many have yet to act on it. TIAA’s new Lifetime Income Survey found that 68 percent of respondents would choose a regular retirement paycheck that will last as long as they live over things like an unlimited lifetime airline ticket (9 percent) or a new car every year (9 percent); however, only one out of 10 survey respondents claim that they have purchased an annuity. Boomer: What are some last minute strategies I can use to boost my retirement income?

Ways to Turn Retirement Savings into Income for Life

As the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age, many are concerned their savings will not last for the rest of their life.

Garnick: Before retiring, individuals should make sure they estimate their expenses in retirement and map out how much monthly income they will need in retirement. TIAA’s survey found that just 35 percent of people know how much monthly income they’ll have in retirement, while only 46 percent know how much they have saved for retirement altogether. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with how much you’ve saved, consider the benefits lifetime income could offer. An annuity can be a good, late-in-the-game option for those looking for that extra boost in monthly income. It is also important to note that retirement strategies typically vary from generation to generation. For example, TIAA’s survey found that less than half of baby boomers plan to withdraw from their retirement accounts as a source of monthly income compared to 60 percent of Gen X and 62 percent of Gen Y who plan on doing so. Regardless of strategy, it’s crucial that individuals outline their plan as early as possible rather than rely on last-minute decisions to reach their retirement goals. Boomer: With not knowing how long you will live in retirement, what assurance can we have that our retirement income will not run out? Garnick: While many baby boomers (84

percent) plan to rely on Social Security for monthly income when they retire, that option is a little less certain for later generations like Gen X and Gen Y. Thankfully, annuities are designed to ensure retirees don’t run out of income during retirement by offering a guaranteed source of monthly income that they can rely on for as long as they live. As the average life expectancy continues to increase, individuals are rightly concerned about outliving retirement savings. A reliable paycheck in retirement is a great way to safeguard against depleting retirement savings entirely. And while the future of Social Security is yet to be seen, individuals across generations understand the importance of lifetime income, with 55 percent of Gen Y survey respondents claiming they are open to contributing part of their savings to an option that will guarantee monthly income throughout retirement. Individuals across all generations understand the importance of lifetime income, but it’s imperative they take action to secure it for themselves. Boomer: Is there a safe way to project how much I will earn on my investments? Garnick: The safe way to approach your investment projections is to always assume a low-end return. That way, you put yourself in a

stable position should any of your investments fall short. On the other hand, lifetime income options like annuities provide retirees with stability and consistency as they know exactly how much monthly income to expect. Annuities are one of the few investment options that offer a guaranteed return to individuals. Boomer: What financial planning should we put in place in the case that something unexpected should happen? Garnick: For starters, it’s important to carefully analyze exactly how much income you rely on leading up to your retirement and how you anticipate your spending habits to change once you do retire – this will lay the foundation for your expectations throughout your retirement. Most financial experts recommend that individuals should replace 70 to 100 percent of their pre-retirement income. When it comes to handling the unexpected once you are retired, lifetime income options like annuities can serve as a safety net in the event something unexpected happens. This way, if retirees need to dip into their lump-sum savings for an emergency, their budget won’t be thrown off too significantly since they still have that monthly income to rely on.

Why Michelle Obama and Bernie Sanders

Are Key to Hillary Clinton's

Chances 2015

Michelle Obama and Bernie Sanders hit the campaign trail today for Hillary Clinton. Their separate events would be easy enough to miss in the blur of political news, particularly in the wake of the first general-electionpresidential debate. But those unlikely supporters are critical to the Clinton campaign’s efforts to solidify and energize the Democratic base this fall. The two former political foes of the Democratic presidential nominee hold distinct but distinctly important appeals for voters where Clinton has significant weaknesses. The first lady’s appeal is broad and deep among Democrats and independents, and she is particularly strong among

black voters. Recent polls place her among the most favorably viewed figures in politics today; an August Gallup poll had nearly two-thirds of voters' saying they had a positive impression of her. Clinton is already getting the support of 9 in 10 black voters, according to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll. But President Barack Obama got an even larger share. The Clinton campaign hopes Michelle Obama drives up interest among those who were

more enthusiastic to cast ballots for her husband than they are to vote for Clinton. “Let’s face it, elections aren’t about who votes. It’s about who doesn’t vote,” Michelle Obama said at a campaign event today in Philadelphia. Then there’s Sanders, who did real damage to Clinton, particularly among independents, over the long primary battle few thought he would endure. New Hampshire was his breakthrough state against

Clinton, and that’s where he campaigned with her this afternoon. Despite the fact that he was never a Democrat before running for president, Sanders has been embraced by the party's base. One poll put his favorability rating among Democrats at 67 percent right after the Democratic National Convention, where his supporters were famously loud in wishing he had been the nominee instead of Clinton.

Michelle Obama and Sanders were political opponents of Clinton’s before this campaign. Now they line up alongside a Murderers’ Row of surrogates — a sitting president, a former president, a sitting vice president and other luminaries such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — in fanning out for a candidate who needs specific help.

'Embarrassing' that Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton are candidates Colin Kaepernick watched "a little bit" of the presidential debate, and he didn't come away impressed with either candidate.

T

he San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback, who has been kneeling during the national anthem as a form of protest since the preseason, hopes for change with racial inequality in the United States. But Kaepernick doesn't feel either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will assist the movement. It was embarrassing to watch that these are our two candidates," Kaepernick told reporters. "Both are proven liars and it almost seems like they're trying to debate who's less racist. "And at this point ... you have to pick the lesser of two evils. But in the end, it's still evil."

The signal-caller also spoke out against Trump again, whom he called "openly racist" last month. The Republican candidate responded days later, saying "maybe he should find a country that works better for him" when asked about Kaepernick's protest. "It's a very ignorant statement that if you don't agree with what's going on here, if you want justice, liberty and freedom for all, then you should leave the country," Kaepernick said. "He always says 'Make America Great Again.' Well, it's never been great for people of color. "That's something that needs to be addressed. Let's make America great for the first time." Organizations

Donald Trump continues to defend his treatment of former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, whose job he says he “saved” years ago by pressuring her to lose weight.

They wanted to fire her,” the Republican nominee said in an interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly on Wednesday. “The company itself wanted to fire her. I saved her job.” Machado was crowned Miss Universe in 1996, the beauty pageant that Trump would buy later that same year. But after winning the contest, Machado gained weight, and in early 1997, Trump invited reporters to a New York City gym to watch her work out. “This is somebody that likes to eat,” Trump said as she rode a stationary bike at the surreal press conference. “I saved her job because they wanted to fire her for putting on so much weight,” he told O’Reilly. “And I said, ‘Don’t do that. Let her try and lose the weight.’” The real estate mogul pointed out that he had “done that with a number of the young ladies where I saved their job.” Trump added: “It is a beauty contest. You know, I mean, say what you want, Bill. I mean, they know what they’re getting into. It’s a beauty contest.”

Trump on former Miss Universe’s

weight-shaming allegations:

‘It’s a beauty contest’ “He’d yell at me all the time,” she says. “He’d tell me, ‘You look fat’ or ‘You look ugly.’”

Trump’s past and recent comments about Machado are the latest flap involving the mogul on the campaign trail. Trump’s critics say it points to a clear pattern of misogynistic behavior.

ers Trump invited to watch her work out.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich defended Trump’s treatment of Machado on Wednesday night.

“I was about to cry in that moment with all the cameras there,” she said. “I said, ‘I don’t want to do this, Mr. Trump.’ He said, ‘I don’t care.’”

“You’re not supposed to gain 60 pounds during the year that you’re Miss Universe,” Gingrich said at a Log Cabin Republicans dinner in Washington, D.C.

“Over the past 20 years,” Machado added, “I’ve gone to a lot of psychologists to combat this.”

Machado, now a well-known actress in Latin America, told the New York Times in May that she suffered from eating disorders — anorexia and bulimia — for five years as a result of Trump’s alleged bullying. She also said she was caught off-guard by all the report-

During Monday’s presidential debate, Hillary Clinton invoked Machado’s name as a reminder of Trump’s history of crude commentary about women. “One of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest,” the Democratic nominee said. “He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them. And he called this woman ‘Miss Piggy.’ Then he called her ‘Miss Housekeeping,’ because she

was Latina. Donald, she has a name: Her name is Alicia Machado.” Trump seemed to be surprised by the charge. “Where did you find this?” he asked. “Where did you find this?” “She has become a U.S. citizen,” Clinton replied. “And you can bet she’s going to vote this November.” Hours after the debate, the Clinton campaign released a video featuring Machado recounting her experience with Trump. “He’d yell at me all the time,” she says. “He’d tell me, ‘You look fat’ or ‘You look ugly.’” In an interview with “Fox and Friends” Tuesday morning, Trump was unapologetic. “She was impossible,” Trump said of Mach-

ado. “She was the winner, and you know she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem.” Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, took to Twitter to mock Trump’s own weight. “The D women Senators have talked & we’re concerned about Donald’s weight,” she wrote. “Campaign stress? We think a public daily weigh-in is called for.” The New Yorker magazine got on the Trump Troll Train too, publishing an illustrated cover that features the GOP hopeful in a swimsuit with a sash that reads, “Miss Congeniality.”

The 37 Fatal Gaffes That Didn’t Kill Donald Trump

The GOP nominee has defied presidential campaign precedent, turning blunders into a shot at the The beginning of the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump included statements that would have ended the campaign of any other politician. Has an announcement speech ever looked so much like a flashily produced political suicide? Did he really just call a key part of the electorate criminals and rapists He has insulted brown people, black people, Muslim people, Jewish people. He has insulted women. He has insulted the grieving parents of a dead soldier. He has mocked a disabled person and expressed admiration for dictators. He has ham-handedly pandered to a politically critical portion of the population by posting to social media a picture of gringo Tex-Mex captioning it, “I love hispanics!” He has suggested he could shoot somebody and not lose votes. He has openly talked about the possibility of the assassination of his opponent. Twice. And these are just the insults, not the demonstrable falsehoods. Here are 37 of his gaffes that could

have been fatal—but somehow weren’t. ► 1. “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” June 16, 2015, announcement speech. ► 2. “He’s not a war hero. He was a

war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” July 17, 2015, Family Leadership Summit in Iowa. Trump was referring to Senator John McCain, a former Navy pilot who was tortured during his five-and-a-half years as a POW during the Vietnam war. ► 3. “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.” August 7, 2015, CNN interview about Megyn Kelly, one of Fox News’ moderators in the first Republican debate.

► 4. “Well I really watch the shows. You really see a lot of great, you know, when you watch your show and all of the other shows, and you have the generals and you have certain people that you like.” August 16, 2015, interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” trying to name his foreign policy advisors. ► 5. “Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!” September 9, 2015, in Rolling Stone, talking about GOP candidate Carly Fiorina. ► 6. “It has not been easy for me ... My father gave me a small loan of a million dollars.” October 26, 2015, on NBC’s “TODAY” show. ► 7. “@mygreenhippo #BenCarson is now leading in the #polls in #Iowa. Too much #Monsanto in the #corn creates issues in the brain? #Trump #GOP.” October 22, 2015, retweet by @realDonaldTrump. ► 8. “I want to know who are the soldiers carrying suitcases with $50 million? How stupid are we? I wouldn’t be surprised if those soldiers, if the

cash didn’t get there.” October 1, 2015, speech in Keene, New Hampshire, suggesting U.S. soldiers embezzled cash intended for disbursement to officials in Iraq and Afghanistan. ► 9. “Now the poor guy, you ought to see this guy. ‘Ah, I don’t know what I said! I don’t remember!’” November 24, 2015, physically mocks New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a congenital condition called arthrogryposis that affects his joints. ► 10. “I think, for me, nuclear is just the power, the devastation is very important to me.” December 15, 2015, answering a debate question about his priority in the “nuclear triad,” the three ways (air, land and sea) that nuclear missiles can be launched. ► 11. “The other thing with the terrorists is you have to take out their families, when you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families. They care about their lives, don’t kid yourself. When they say they don’t care about their lives, you have to take out their families,” December 2, 2015,

interview on “Fox & Friends.” ► 12 a. “Is there anyone in this room who doesn’t renegotiate deals? Probably 99 percent of you. Probably more than any room I've ever spoken in.” ► 12 b. “I’m a negotiator like you folks were negotiators.” ► 12 c. “You’re not going to support me because I don’t want your money,” December 3, 2015, speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition. ► 13. “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” December 7, 2015, reading from a statement by the Trump campaign. ► 14. “Two Corinthians, right? Two Corinthians 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame. I promise.” February 1, 2016, rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. ► 16. “If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. … For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith.” February ► 18, 2016. Press release from the Trump campaign. ► 17. “Well, just so you understand, I don't know anything about David Duke, okay? I don't know anything about what you’re even talking about with white supremacy or white supremacists. So, I don't know.” February 28, 2016 on CNN, asked if he’ll disavow the endorsement of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. ►8. “Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!” March 22, 2016, tweet from @realDonaldTrump. ► 19. “The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment.” March 30, 2016, at an MSNBC town hall meeting in Green Bay, Wisconsin, discussing what should happen to women who procure illegal abortions. ► 20. “It's not like, gee whiz, nobody has them. So, North Korea has nukes. Japan has a problem with that. I mean, they have a big problem with that. Maybe they would in fact be better off if they defend themselves from North Korea … Including with nukes, yes, including with nukes," April 3, 2016, interview with Chris Wallace on Fox. ► 21. “I was down there, and I watched our police and our firemen, down on 7-Eleven, down at the World Trade Center, right after it came down. And I saw the greatest people I’ve ever seen in action.” April 18, 2016, speech in Buffalo, New York, misidentifying the 9/11 attacks. ► 22. “His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald’s being — you know, shot. I mean, the whole thing is ridiculous. What is this, right prior to his being shot, and nobody even brings it up. They don’t even talk about that. That was reported, and nobody talks about it. I mean, what was he doing — what was

he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death? Before the shooting? It’s horrible.” May 3, 2016, interview with Fox News, repeating unsubstantiated allegations that Ted Cruz’s father was involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. ► 23. “Happy #CincoDeMayo! Frankly, he should recuse himself because he’s given us ruling after ruling after ruling, negative, negative, negative. What happens is the judge, who happens to be, we believe, Mexican, which is great. I think that’s fine.” May 27, 2016, rally in San Diego, in which he criticizes Indiana-born Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who, on the basis of his Mexican ancestry, Trump alleges cannot judge fairly in a lawsuit related to Trump University. ► 26. “Look at my African American over here!” June 3, 2016, rally in Redding, California. ► 27. “Just arrived in Scotland. And then there's the bevy of oh-so-colorful characters, from Jello Biafra, Joan Jett Blakk and Wavy Gravy to Lee Mercer, Jack Shepard and Lyndon LaRouche. Did we mention Deez Nuts?

To say an election was the craziest or most controversial simply isn't objective. Sure, the Supreme Court ended up deciding the BushGore outcome more than a month after the election, but is that more controversial than Congress picking the president? That's happened a few times. And yes, Bush lost the popular vote by more than a half million ballots but carried 30 states and eked out a five-vote lead in the Electoral College, but is that crazier than the similar outcomes of 1824, 1876 and 1888? We'll let you decide. So, without any superlatives, here are 10 fascinating elections in American history: ► 1800: Prelude to a duel The outcome of the 1800 contest between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams was so bizarre, the United States had to amend the Constitution.

of the most bizarre elections in American history

Both had 73 votes to Adams' 65.Congress would be called upon to break the tie. Enter Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first treasury secretary, founder of the Federalist Party and a man who did not care for Adams, Jefferson or Burr. Making the election all the zanier, the rivalry between Burr and Hamilton would continue for more than three years before Burr, still the sitting vice president, killed Hamilton in a duel. ► 1824: 'Corrupt bargain' This one was odd from the get-go, if only for the fact that the Federalist Party was on the cusp of extinction and all four candidates were Democratic-Republicans. Andrew Jackson, a war hero and statesman, won the popular vote by fewer than 39,000 ballots and took 99 Electoral College votes. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams secured 84, Treasury Secretary William Crawford won 41 and House Speaker Henry Clay had 37.

Pre-12th Amendment, Electoral College members each had two votes for president, and there were no official tickets. who by then was a leader in the National Republican Party. ► 1860: Nation divided A crowd gathers for the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln on March 4, 1861. This election wasn't particularly close. Abraham Lincoln trounced John Breckinridge in an election that had one of the highest voter turnouts of all time. The Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision of 1857, essentially legalizing slavery in all U.S. territories, had laid the battleground: The Republican Party largely opposed slavery but was reluctant to push for its prohibition in states that already had it, and the Democrats were unable at their 1860 convention to establish an official party line on slavery. The Electoral College vote told the story. Lincoln snared only 40% of the popular vote, but in the Electoral College took most of the North, along with California and Oregon. Douglas came in second in the popular vote but took only Missouri (and three votes in New Jersey). Breckinridge took most of the South, along with Maryland and Delaware, and Bell's middle-of-the-road policies earned him the middle of the road: Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.

In April, a South Carolina militia would take Fort Sumter, and four more states would join the Confederacy. ► 1872: Death of a candidate Set aside that 1872 was the year suffragette Victoria Woodhull of the People's Party became the first woman to run for the president. Also, forget that writer and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, her running mate, was the first African-American to be considered for the vice presidency. And never mind this was the year Susan B. Anthony would be arrested for illegal voting. No, 1872 was strange because one of the primary candidates never saw the final Electoral College vote. Horace Greeley wasn't supposed to put up much of a fight in his bid to unseat President Ulysses S. Grant, but a schism in Grant's Republican Party made things a little more interesting. Grant, who led the Union armies that defeated the Confederacy, Some Republicans defected, becoming Liberal Republicans, and cast their lot with Greeley, a Democrat who would go on to snare 44% of the popular vote, almost 3 million ballots, despite him stopping campaigning to tend to his sick wife, who died a week before the election. continue Page 14

Eugene Debs ran for president five times, the final time from the most unlikely of headquarters.

ber 29, 1872, and 63 of his 66 votes were dispersed among Thomas Hendricks, who would later become vice president, and other Democrats. Grant attended his rival's funeral. ► 876: Not-so-independent tiebreaker Democrat Samuel Tilden had beaten Republican Rutherford Hayes. He snared a quartermillion more ballots in the popular vote, and he had 19 more votes in the Electoral College. With no precedent to lean on, the two parties agreed to establish a 15-member commission made up of seven Republicans, seven Democrats and an independent. The independent, Supreme Court Justice David Davis, however, was unexpectedly selected by the Illinois Legislature to serve in the U.S. Senate. He was replaced by Justice Joseph Bradley, a diehard Republican who would cast every vote for Hayes, providing him the 20 votes he needed for a majority. Democrats initially threatened to block the decision, but in a backroom deal they agreed to drop their opposition if Hayes, among other provisions, removed federal troops that had been in the South under Reconstruction. Hayes was sworn in March 5, 1877, and within weeks, he removed the troops. Reconstruction formally came to an end, halting the progress African-Americans had made. It would be decades before civil rights would see serious discussion again in Congress. ► 1920: Prison campaign It was a battle between two newspaper publishers, but the election wasn't terribly exciting. Republican Warren G. Harding handed Democrat James Cox a historic beatdown, taking more than 60% of the popular vote along with 37 of the 48 states. Third place is where it got interesting. Long before Bernie Sanders faced jabs for his liberal politics, the Socialist Party of America enjoyed a modicum of support at the outset

of the 20th century. Thus, that union leader Eugene Debs ran for president in 1900, 1904, 1908 and 1912 is somewhat unremarkable, as is the fact he secured roughly 6% of the popular vote in 1912, more than 900,000 ballots. In 1920, though, Debs had to run his fifth campaign from the most unlikely of headquarters: prison. No stranger to incarceration -- he'd served time in connection with an 1894 railroad strike -- Debs again drew the government's ire in 1918 when he gave an anti-war speech in Canton, Ohio, in which he pilloried "the ruling class" who made all the decisions to send "the working class" to war. He was convicted under an espionage law and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Demonstrations protesting his imprisonment evolved into the May Day riots of 1919, and Debs was later moved to the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, from where he conducted his presidential campaign. ► 1948: Ultimate 'whoops' moment Harry Truman holds up the Chicago Daily Tribune with a headline of his "defeat" to Thomas Dewey in 1948. President Harry S. Truman was done before the election began. You could stick a fork in him, to hear the pundits tell it. The election was New York Gov. Thomas Dewey's. Period. The 1946 midterms had handed both houses to Republicans for the first time in almost 20 years, and opinion polls showed that just one in three Americans approved of Truman's handling of the presidency. Making matters worse, Truman's commerce secretary, Henry Wallace, had revolted over the administration's foreign policy toward the Soviet Union and declared his intention to run as a third-party candidate. The final pre-election Gallup poll -- interestingly, taken in mid-October and not released until the day before Election Day -- showed Dewey beating Truman by 5 percentage

points. "Dewey defeats Truman." ► 1960: Dawn of televised debates John F. Kennedy set a lot of precedents when he was elected in 1960. He was the youngest president elected to office, the first at the time to be born in the 20th century. He was also the first Catholic president. The contest between Kennedy and Richard Nixon, pitting a relatively unknown senator against a two-term sitting vice president, marked another precedent: the first time that presidential debates would be pumped into American living rooms. This was important to the vote's outcome because televisions were increasingly part of the American household. Eighty-eight percent of homes had them, compared with 11% in 1950. Nixon had recently been hospitalized. He refused to wear makeup, which served to increase his thin, sickly appearance. He had a 5 o'clock shadow. He wore a gray suit that blended into the background. His appearance left much to be desired, historians would note. Though it's arguable that the debate alone won Kennedy the election (he also secured the African-American vote by offering his assistance in getting the Rev. Martin Luther Jr. out of prison just weeks before the election), politicians and historians concur this changed the face of campaigns.Televised debates made image and appearance primary considerations, and it raised such an unsettling specter for some candidates that it would be 16 years before another presidential hopeful agreed to a televised debate. ► 1964: Mandate on race Barry Goldwater as too reckless to be put in charge of the country's nuclear arsenal. The ad remains haunting even amid today's supercharged mudslinging. The summer of 1964 brought the Civil Rights Act. Angry whites protested the legislation across the South, while blacks enraged by

police treatment erupted into demonstrations in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and other cities. The stage was set for extremes, but the election would not hinge on whether Goldwater or President Lyndon Johnson was a more capable commander in chief. Race would not only shape 1964's ballot, but it would affect elections for decades to come. Johnson would go on to win one of the most lopsided elections ever. Goldwater won only his home state of Arizona and Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. Republicans still enjoy a great deal of political dominance in the South to this day. ► 1972: Death (of a campaign) by electroshock therapy Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota had just won the Democratic nomination for president and phoned Sen. Thomas Eagleton and asked him to be his running mate. Several high-profile Democrats had declined to join McGovern on the ticket, so he picked Eagleton, in part, because he hoped he would help him shore up the Catholic vote. To say Eagleton didn't undergo the intense vetting of, say, Sarah Palin or Paul Ryan would be an understatement. Had McGovern grilled Eagleton according to today's standards, he might've learned Eagleton's secret: that the senator from Missouri had been hospitalized three times for depression and had undergone electroshock therapy on two of those occasions. On August 1 -- 18 days after he was selected -- Eagleton officially dropped out of the campaign. ► Richard Nixon would go on to obliterate McGovern, carrying 49 states and outpacing the Democrat by about 18 million votes -- thereby striking fear into would-be presidents for decades about who they choose to join them on the ticket.

Department of Homeland Security: Hackers are probing voting systems

The DHS says hackers have been scanning state election systems, and it urges officials to seek federal assistance on security. "Don't blame me, I voted for the other candidate (but hackers stole my ballot)." You might chuckle, but apparently that's a bumper sticker we could soon encounter for real -- if election officials aren't careful. The US Department of Homeland Security issued a statement Saturday saying hackers have been casing state voting systems, and it offered its cybersecurity assistance to any states that request it.

Last month also saw the news that hackers had made off with personal information associated with at least a half billion Yahoo Mail accounts, the largest data breach in history. This isn't the first time the DHS has spoken out about a cyberthreat to the elections. In August, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said the US government should consider classifying voting systems as critical infrastructure, like power grids or dams, a move that would put election setups under greater scrutiny. The latest statement from the DHS said that so far 21 states have raised their hands for assistance.

You can knock on the door of a commercial bank—that’s the most common financing solution for a small business. But qualifying for a bank loan is hard. In fact, only about 20% of small business owners can score a loan from a bank. Luckily, you have a few other sources of capital to tap into: online small business loans, equity financing, crowdfunding, or family and friends— to name a few.

► But what about the government? Are there

government small business loans?

The answer? Sort of. When you need financing, consider pursuing business loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA). In many cases, they’re the best option for small business owners. Read on to learn why. How Do SBA Loans Work? The term “SBA loans” is actually sort of a misnomer—the SBA doesn’t directly lend money to businesses. Instead, it’s an arm of the government that helps small businesses get bigger and better loans than they’d otherwise qualify for. The SBA encourages actual lenders—like commercial banks—to lend to small businesses by guaranteeing a large portion of the loans issued. In the end, it’s a win-win for both the business owner and the lender.

► Why? Well, traditional financing institutions are notoriously hesitant to lend to small businesses. Their tight credit is backed by some reason, considering that only half of all small businesses last their first 5 years. There’s just not enough reason to confidently believe that your small business will make

it in the long-haul and be able to repay a loan. But when the SBA guarantees a percentage of the small business loan, the lender can be confident that they’ll get at least most of their money back in the event the borrower defaults on the loan. The borrower wins too, because with an SBA guarantee in place, they’re likely to qualify for more financing at a lower rate than they’d get otherwise.

► SBA Loans: Rates, Terms, and Requirements Government small business loans from the SBA resemble bank loans in a few regards: they come with high maximum rates, long terms, lowinterest rates, and the same funding speed—which is slow.

► Here’s what to expect. Most SBA loans come at a 6 - 13% interest rate. Your exact rate is up to negotiation between you and the lender, but is subject to a maximum spread allowed by the SBA. Terms on SBA loans can go up to 25 years, but in most cases you’ll be approved for less. And finally, you can be approved for up to $5 million—but the average SBA loan is about $370,000. Here’s one more thing that makes SBA loans similar to bank loans: application requirements. You can expect some pretty extensive documentation requirements and a heavy reliance on your personal credit score. Even the smallest businesses B:17.25” can qualify for an SBA loan—meaning the busi- T:17” ness owner’s personal history and financial habitsS:16” will be a guiding factor in his or her SBA loan eligibility. The 3 SBA Loan Programs For You to Consider The SBA offers 3 main loan programs for small business owners: the 7(a) Loan Program, the

CDC/504 Loan Program, and the Microloan Program.

► 7(a) Loan Program The 7(a) Loan Program is the SBA’s most common and popular lending program. Loans from the 7(a) Program can be used for a variety of business purposes, making them flexible options for small business owners. Hiring new employees? Doing some remodeling? Even refinancing an older, more expensive loan that’s holding your business back? A 7(a) loan could be the perfect fit for your business.

► CDC/504 Loan Program Whereas a 7(a) loan keeps it general, the CDC/504 Loan Program gets a little more specific. CDC/504 loans are limited to major fixed asset purchases. That means large equipment, real estate, and building purchases or refurbishments. If you’re gearing up to make any of these purchases for your small business, consider applying to the CDC/504 program. These business loans are highly regulated, with low interest rates and terms of up to 20 years. But to get these low-cost, long-term loans, you’ll need to prove that you’re a top-notch borrower with a proven track record.

► Microloan Program Sometimes small business owners only need a little bit of capital to get their business off the ground. If this is the case, it’s almost useless to go straight to the bank—you’re very likely to get a big fat “no.” Why? A $20,000 loan and a $200,000 loan cost the same amount for banks to fund, but at

much lower return. When you only need a small amount of capital for your business, consider the Microloan Program. Microloans are great options for business owners who have almost no credit history and need anywhere between $500 and $50,000.

► The Bottom Line on Government Small Business Loans Whereas commercial banks have their eyes on medium- and large-sized businesses most of the time, the SBA is fully committed to serving entrepreneurs. Just take a look at the numbers: In 2015, the SBA helped small businesses create (and retain) over 55,000 jobs, start over 19,000 businesses, and secure $4.7 billion in capital. And when it comes down to it, SBA loans come with all the perks of traditional bank loans, but are easier to qualify for. What’s not to love? The government is a fantastic resource for small businesses—one worth checking out when you need financing to grow your business.

BIG GAME BUSINESS declined to do so.

While Lady Gaga might not be getting paid for her performance, she’ll get plenty of free airtime and promotion. Last year, 114.4 million people tuned in for the Super Bowl, according to Sports Illustrated.

The short answer? Nothing. When Coldplay and Beyoncé performed for Super Bowl 50, a NFL spokeswoman said the league doesn’t pay the halftime artists. “We cover expenses and production costs,” she told Forbes. The costs are nothing to sniff at either. They can run more than $10 million, according to online news outlet Heavy.com. In fact, Super Bowl XLIX halftime performer Katy Perry told Billboard that the NFL asked her to pay some of the costs, although she
