The Never Ending Days of Spring & Summer Spring begins the renewal of annual growth, fresh scents and newborn wildlife. your spirit gets excited to finally be able to listen to the birds chirping and wood frogs clucking. The beauty of bursts of lush green grass with the emerging of waking wildflowers reminds you that the seemingly endless months of shoveling snow are over and spring is finally here. Golf courses start manicuring and clearing, hoping for an early season opener. ATVers anxiously wait for the trails to open and seasonal parks unlock their gates. Eager fishermen put away the tip-ups to make way for the launching of their boats into the Wisconsin River and surrounding Tomahawk lakes and streams. The calming of winter fades and the excitement of spring and summer take over. Summer brings the endless nights of camping and long days of enjoying the many beaches in the area. Catching fish is a guarantee, but more pleasurable when you latch onto the big one after spending the entire day on the water.

Canoeing and kayaking is great and many enthusiasts can be seen combing the calm bays of the area river and lakes. There are plenty of boat landings and picnic areas to stop and take a planned break. Summer kicks in Memorial weekend with a downtown Car Show and street gathering and runs through the long Labor Day weekend when many are getting in their last summer blast. Stay in town or venture to a resort nestled in the woods. Regardless, Tomahawk has the Northwoods to play and the hometown hospitality to make you want to stay. Tomahawk has many beautiful summer resorts, plus hotel and motel accommodations. But if heading into the woods is your thing, we also have numerous camping opportunities ranging from popular campgrounds with hook-ups to scenic rustic river sites staggered along the Wisconsin River.

Abundant Lakes

& Wisconsin River

The Tomahawk region is home to more than 15 lakes & flowages offering great recreational and fishing opportunities for walleye, musky, northern pike, bass and panfish. Each year, several trophy size musky, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are caught in our beautiful waters. Here is a highlight of just some of our beautiful lakes and fishing opportunities: Deer Lake: Deer Lake is a 150 acre lake north of Tomahawk. It has a maximum depth of 62 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include Musky, Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye. The lake's water is moderately clear.

Lake Mohawksin:This 1,910 acre lake, part of the Wisconsin River System, derives its name from three rivers: “Mo” from the Somo River, “Hawk” from the Tomahawk River, and “Sin” from the Wisconsin River. The lake is home to the mighty musky, some as long as 50 inches. Smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, channel catfish, crappies and bluegills are also plentiful. Lake Nokomis: The largest lake in the Tomahawk area at 2,433 acres, Lake Nokomis is known for its bluegill, largemouth and smallmouth bass, musky, northern pike and walleye fishing. Known as a beautiful and productive fish lake, it is also a great place to spot majestic bald eagles. Lake Nokomis is part of a chain of lakes that includes Bridge and Deer lakes, with more than 4,000 acres of recreation.

Wisconsin River: The Wisconsin River flows through Tomahawk, regulated by the Kings Dam found on the east side of town. Many fishermen find this location a favorite fishing hotspot.

Lake Alice: Just under 1,400 acres, Lake Alice is a great fishing lake that holds musky, pike, bass and walleye. It is best known for its excellent panfishing, including perch, bluegills and crappies. Lake Alice is also a popular ice fishing spot.

Spirit Flowage: A scenic body of water where wildlife is plentiful and the fishing is great. Walleyes are the main fish, producing 10-lb fish every year. Northern pike, muskies, crappies, bluegills and huge bullheads can also be found. The winter is a playground for ice fishermen, as roads are plowed on the ice-covered flowage offering access to the famous fishing holes.

Shop Tomahawk Retail & General Services Your money spent at local businesses is reinvested into the Tomahawk community which creates diversity and helps our community maintain its unique appeal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Shopping local creates jobs. Shops in our town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the Tomahawk community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Tomahawk independent shops invest more into our community. Tomahawk businesses are generous in their support of local charities, schools and community events. Supporting our local shops means a substantial financial impact on our Tomahawk community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Local shops sell a wide range of great products. Many people fall out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Shopping local saves you money. Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us that local business equals expensive. If you add travel, fees to transfer items and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Shopping local retains our community. No one likes to

ever lose shops and services in Tomahawk but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Shopping in Tomahawk retains our distinctiveness. Local Tomahawk businesses respond quickly to the needs of customers by stocking products to meet the changing Tomahawk needs. This leads to a rewarding and unique shopping experience. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Local shops welcome everyone. Most people can get in and out of Tomahawk local businesses easily and this is especially important for the elderly, younger folks and even those without means of transportation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. Businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Shopping local saves services. Services tend to cluster around shops. As businesses and shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants, etc. Our Tomahawk businesses generate new businesses and services.

“Time is critical when a child is missing. Funds from the STAR Foundation ensures Tomahawk Safe Assured’s commitment to provide the Safe Assured ID Program to all children in our community at no charge.” –Carol Swan, Safe Assured Program

Please consider the Tomahawk STAR Foundation when making your choices for charitable donations in 2015. Chances are someone you know has benefited from a STAR Foundation Grant in some way.

Tomahawk STAR Foundation .................................................. What is the Tomahawk Star Foundation? The Tomahawk Star Foundation serves the Tomahawk area by acting as a community chest for businesses and individuals by making charitable grants to community groups, clubs and non-profit organizations that contribute to the health and vitality of our area. Tomahawk is a generous community and many of its businesses, families and community members have found that by making a tax-deductible contribution to the STAR Foundation, they are able to support area organizations with one gift, rather than making multiple donations throughout the year. The Tomahawk STAR Foundation provides support to groups and/or organizations when they need it. Since its inception in April 2004, the STAR Foundation has donated more than $575,000+ to local community groups in general and restricted contributions.

Making a Donation? As a business or individual, you have two options for making tax-deductible donations to the Foundation; either general or restricted. General donations fund grant requests the Foundation receives from local community groups. If you or your organization has a specific purpose in mind, you may designate your gift as “restricted” for a particular group or program. You choose how you wish to make your contributions. You will receive a confirmation letter and receipt of your donation. Your gift will enable our community’s spirit to continue to grow and prosper.
