Welcome

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who creates, redeems, and sustains us and all of creation.

C: Amen.

P: With all my heart I glorify the Lord! In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior.

C: He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant.

P: From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored because God has done great things for me.

C: Holy is his name.

P: He shows mercy to everyone, from one generation to the next, to all who honor him as God.

C: He has shown strength with his arm, and scattered the arrogant and proud.

P: He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones and lifted up the lowly.

C: He has =illed the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty-handed.

P: He has come to the aid of his servant Israel, remembering his mercy, just as he promised.”

C: Holy is his name

Lectio continua—Reader: from Psalm 9

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. […]

The LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness.

The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Reflection 2

Centering Prayer… from Matt 13

Jesus said: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up./ Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away./ Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them./ Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." [Jesus then explained] “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path./ As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away./ As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing./ But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

• What sorts of things prevent us from understanding God’s Word? {hard path}

INTERNAL to ourselves…

EXTERNAL to us—in church, especially.…

• What sorts of “troubles” or “persecutions” cause us to fall away? {stoney ground}

How can we clear these stones from our hearts?

• What sorts different priorities draw us away from God? {thorns}

What can we do to weed our hearts/minds from these competitors?

• How can we cultivate our hearts to be better soil?
