Prelude: Eric Williams and Dave Ruete please stand as you are able Gathering

P: Welcome in the Name of Jesus, the Savior of the world. We are gathered to worship, to proclaim Jesus Christ cruciEied and risen, to remember before God our brother, Dave, to give thanks for his life, to commend him to our merciful redeemer, and to comfort one another in our grief.

Placing of the Pall and procession with Bagpipes

P: When we were baptized into Christ Jesus we were baptized into his death. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. (Ro 6:3-5)

We thank you for entrusting your beloved son, Dave, to us. We are blessed by the beautiful gift he was, even as his memory Eills our hearts with an abundance of happiness. To you, we are eternally grateful for the love which you began in him and complete in him now, drawing him in grace unto yourself. We bless you for leading Dave through word and deed into the presence of your eternal love.

P: Let us pray… O God of grace and glory, we remember before you today our brother Dave. We thank you for giving him to us to know and to love as a companion in our pilgrimage on earth. In your boundless compassion, console us as we mourn. Give your aid, so we may see death as the gateway to eternal life, that we may continue our course on earth in conEidence until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before us; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen.

Isaiah 40:28-31

Readings

R: Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

…The word of the Lord

C: Thanks be to God.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your soul.

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

Please stand as you are able for the Gospel P: The Gospel according to St John chapter 14 verses 1-7.

Psalm 121

P: [Jesus said:] “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Homily

Apostles’ Creed

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruciQied, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers

P: Almighty God, You have knit your chosen people together in one communion, in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Give to your whole church in heaven and on earth your light and your peace.

C: Hear us, O Lord.

P: Grant that all who have been baptized into Christ’s death and resurrection may die to sin and rise to newness of life and that through the gate of death and the grave we may pass with him to our joyful resurrection.

C: Hear us, O Lord.

P: Grant to us who are still on our pilgrimage, and walk as yet by faith, your Holy Spirit to lead us in holiness and righteousness all our days.

C: Hear us, O Lord.

P: Grant to all who mourn a sure conEidence in your loving care that, casting all their sorrow on you, they may know the consolation of your love.

C: Hear us, O Lord.

P: Give courage and faith to the bereaved that they may have strength to meet the days ahead.

C: Hear us, O Lord.

P: Help us; we pray, in the midst of things we cannot understand, to believe in and Eind comfort in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

C: Hear us, O Lord.

P: Grant us grace to entrust Dave to your never-failing love which sustained him in this life. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, and remember him according to the favor you bear for your people.

C: Hear us, O Lord.

P: God of all grace, you sent your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to bring life and immortality to light. We give you thanks that by His death He destroyed the power of death and by His resurrection opened the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Strengthen us in the conEidence that because He lives, we shall live also, and that neither death nor life, nor things present nor things to come will be able to separate us from your love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

We Greet one another with the Peace of Christ

Peace

The Celebration of Holy Communion

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead, and in whom our hope of resurrection dawns. The sting of death has been removed by the glorious promise of his risen life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and lift our voices in song:

P: Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have Eilled all creation with light and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Through Abraham you promised to bless all nations. You rescued Israel, your chosen people. Through the prophets you renewed your promise; and, at this end of all the ages, you sent your Son, who in words and deeds proclaimed your kingdom and was obedient to your will, even to giving his life.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: take and eat; this is my body + , given for you. Do this in memory of me.

Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all of them to drink, saying: this cup is the new covenant in my blood + , shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in memory of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death, until he comes.

C: Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again.

P: Therefore, gracious Father, with this bread and cup we remember the life our Lord offered for us. And, believing the witness of his resurrection, we await his coming in power to share with us the great and promised feast.

C: Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

P: Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, the spirit of our Lord and of his resurrection, that we who receive the Lord’s body and blood may live to the praise of your glory and receive our inheritance with all your saints in light.

C: Amen. Come Holy Spirit.

P: Join our prayers with those of your servants of every time and place, and unite them with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest until he comes as victorious Lord of all.

C: Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

P: We join our hearts together as we pray the prayer Jesus taught us…

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

DAVID BRUCE REID

July 21, 1943 – May 2, 2024

Dave passed away peacefully at the Cape Cod Hospital after as surprisingly short battle with cancer. His wife, Claire Reid, was his devoted caregiver.

Dave grew up in a US Army family and was himself an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. After the Army, he got his degree in accounting and worked in auditing and for businesses in Albuquerque, St. Thomas, VI (where his beloved daughter, Meredith, was born) and on Cape Cod – including the Fish Pier at Provincetown, Snow’s in Orleans and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Falmouth.

Dave was an active member of First Lutheran Church, West Barnstable, where over the years he served as usher, communion assistant, Treasurer, and web-designer.

Dave was an avid birdwatcher and wrote a “Bird Report” for the quarterly newsletter of the Indian Ponds Association. He also loved traveling all around the world, folk dancing (Scottish and Contras & Squares), and watching YouTube. He was a faithful brother at Mariner’s Lodge in Cotuit where he served as Master twice.

Dave was very proud of his Scottish ancestry, learning to play the bagpipes as an adult, and was a founding member of the Highland Light Scottish Pipe Band.

Dave loved his daughter and step-children (Meredith Reid, Chuck Xander, and Sarah Xander) and their partners (Keith Moulton and Jack Lee) and he tried always to support his beloved grandchildren (Hadley Moulton, Donovan LaValley, and Spencer LaValley) by attending horseback riding demonstrations, cheerleading meets, school plays, and football games. Dave also loved his brothers and their spouses (Peter and Gretchen Reid, Bob Reid and Pat Bird – all living in RI).

In lieu of Elowers, donations may be made to First Lutheran Church, West Barnstable, MA or to the VFW.
