a región caribeña de Costa Rica está comprendida en su mayor parte en la provincia de Limón, abarca todo el litoral caribeño, desde la frontera con Nicaragua al Norte hasta la de Panamá al Sur, y hacia el interior abarca toda la vertiente atlántica de la Cordillera Central. Es un área dominada por abruptas montañas, numerosos ríos, extensas llanuras y 212 kilómetros de costa, donde se localizan diversas zonas de vida que incluyen desde paisajes litorales a nivel del mar a páramos sobre los 3.000 msnm, con gran variedad de microclimas y ecosistemas, y por consiguiente un elevado número de especies animales y vegetales.
he Caribbean region of Costa Rica is mostly in the province of Limón; it covers the entire Caribbean coast from the border with Nicaragua to the north until Panama to the south, and inland covers the entire Atlantic side of the Central Mountain Range. It is an area dominated by rugged mountains, numerous rivers, vast plains and 212 kilometers of coastline, where we find different life zones ranging from the coastal scenery at sea level till moorlands above 3,000 meters over sea level, with a great variety of microclimates and ecosystems, and therefore a large number of animal and plant species.
El Caribe es un destino diferente al resto del país, pues además de ser una tierra dotada de abundantes recursos naturales también es rica en recursos humanos, destacando su interesante diversidad étnica y cultural. A las poblaciones indígenas que siempre habitaron la región de Talamanca, bribris y cabécares, quienes aún mantienen viva la llama de su cultura, se les unieron los negros afro-antillanos, que primero llegaron durante la época colonial para trabajar en los cacaotales y a partir de 1.872 para la construcción del ferrocarril que uniría el valle central con el Caribe.
The Caribbean is a destination different from the rest of the country; besides being a land endowed with abundant natural resources it is also rich in human resources, highlighting the interesting cultural and ethnic diversity. The Indigenous populations which always lived in the region of Talamanca, Cabecares and Bribris who still keep alive the flame of their culture, were joined by Afros from the West Indies, who first arrived during the colonial era to work in cacao farms and since 1872 came to build the rail link between the Central Valley and the Caribbean.
Este grupo étnico conserva marcados rasgos de su cultura afro inglesa, como el uso del “Patua”, conocido como ingles criollo, su arquitectura con marcada influencia Isabelina, casas sobre pilares de llamativos colores, con corredores abiertos. Su gastronomía, de lo más exótica, se basa en la utilización de productos naturales, pescados y mariscos cocinados con vegetales de sus propios huertos, en secretas recetas traídas desde Africa, a base de leche de coco y especias. Su música, el Calipso, se mantiene viva gracias a bandas locales que amenizan las veladas y alegran los corazones en los pueblos caribeños.
This ethnic group retains its marked traits of the Afro - British culture such as the use of “Patua” known as creole English, its marked influenced Elizabethan architecture, houses built on pillars of bright colours and open corridors. Its exotic cuisine is based on the use of natural products, fish and seafood cooked with vegetables from their own gardens, from secret recipes brought from Africa, based on coconut milk and spices. Their music, the Calypso, is kept alive by local bands that liven up the evening and cheer the hearts of Caribbean people. Later on Europeans and Asians came to the area and completed a model of peaceful coexistence, with a strong respect for nature, facilitating the development of small tourism businesses focused on a nature-based tourism, with a high cultural and environmental commitment, aimed towards sustainable development. In this country region a cosmopolitan culture was forged which nowadays is an example for the rest of the world.
Posteriormente llegaron europeos y asiáticos quienes completaron un modelo de convivencia pacífica, con un marcado respeto hacia la naturaleza, propiciando el desarrollo de pequeñas empresas turísticas enfocadas hacia un turismo centrado en la naturaleza, con un alto compromiso ambiental y cultural, orientado al desarrollo sostenible. En esta región del país se ha forjado una cultura cosmopolita que hoy es ejemplo para el resto del mundo.

con un clima Ecuatorial Muy Húmedo Caliente en las planicies, con temperaturas que oscilan entre 28 y 37 grados. En las montañas altas se dan regímenes fríos muy húmedos y lluviosos, con temperaturas bajas todo el año con una media de 10 grados, pudiendo llegar incluso llegar a menos de 0 grados en las zonas más elevadas. No cuenta con una estación seca, aunque en Marzo-Abril y Agosto-Septiembre, y a veces Octubre, se presenta una baja en la precipitación. Desde San José al Caribe se accede a través de la Ruta 32, la carretera que atraviesa uno de los Parques Nacionales más impresionantes y biodiverso del mundo, el Braulio Carrillo, una bestia natural que te hará pensar en dinosaurios. Tras atravesar estas abruptas montañas aparecen las llanuras de Guápiles, serpenteada por los grandes ríos de la vertiente atlántica, Chirripó, Pacuare y Reventazón, entre otros, óptimos para la práctica del rafting. En la costa te da la bienvenida la colorida ciudad de Limón, capital de la provincia. La carretera continúa en dirección al Caribe Sur, hacia poblaciones como Cahuita, Puerto Viejo o Manzanillo, se interna hacia Bribri, en los valles de la Baja Talamanca, y más al Sur hasta la frontera con Panamá. La red de autobuses públicos tiene variedad de horarios y rutas hacia todos los principales destinos del Caribe desde la estación de buses Gran Terminal del Caribe, en la ciudad de San José. También existen busetas de transporte privado con salida desde los principales hoteles de la capital y de Arenal. Las vías de acceso al Caribe Norte son acuáticas, pudiendo embarcar en diferentes puertos, como el de Moín en Limón, en el río La Suerte por Cariari, o en Caño Blanco. La ruta más recomendable es desde Moín por ser la mas larga, más de 80 kilómetros de aventura acuática, divisando gran diversidad de flora y fauna en tu recorrido. La más económica es por el río La Suerte cuyo trayecto por los canales y ríos es de menor duración, pero igualmente atractivo. Existen también servicios de vuelos diarios entre San José, Limón y Tortuguero, en poco más de 30 minutos estarás en tu destino, también conectan con vuelos a Bocas del Toro, en Panamá. El Caribe de Costa Rica es un destino seguro para el turista, aunque no está de más tomar las precauciones básicas que tomaríamos en cualquier otro lugar. El Caribe tiene una tradición eco turística arraigada y sus gentes son muy amables y hospitalarios, es el destino idóneo para tus vacaciones.

It has no dry season, though in March-April and August to September and sometimes October shows a decline in the precipitations. From San Jose to the Caribbean it is accessed via Route 32, the road crosses one of the most impressive and bio diverse of the world National Parks, the Braulio Carrillo, a natural beast that will make you think of dinosaurs. After passing through these rugged mountains the Guápiles plains appear, winding through the great rivers of the Atlantic slope, such as the Chirripó, Pacuare and Reventazon Rivers, among others, excellent for rafting. On the coast you are welcomed by the colourful city of Limon, capital of the province. The road continues towards the Southern Caribbean, to towns like Cahuita, Puerto Viejo or Manzanillo, it penetrates into Bribri, in the valleys of the Baja Talamanca, and further south to the border with Panama.

The public bus system has a variety of schedules and routes to all major destinations in the Caribbean from the bus station the Gran Terminal del Caribe in San Jose city. There are also private shuttle vans leaving from the main hotels in the capital and in Arenal. Access roads to the Northern Caribbean are aquatic and can be embarked on different ports, such as Moin in Limon, on the Suerte River in Cariari, or in Caño Blanco. The recommended route is from Moin because it is the longest, more than 80 kilometers of water adventure, overlooking a large diversity of flora and fauna on your way. The cheapest is by the Suerte River where the route along the canals and rivers is shorter, but equally attractive. There are daily flight services between San José, Limón and Tortuguero, in just over 30 minutes you are at your destination; they also connect with flights to Bocas del Toro, Panama. The Caribbean of Costa Rica is a safe destination for tourists, but it is worth taking basic precautions you would take in any other place. The Caribbean has an eco-tourism tradition established and its people are very friendly and hospitable, it is the ideal destination for your holidays. 6

Senderismo en el Bosque Primario del Refugio Nacional Gandoca-Manzanillo Hiking in Gandoca-Manzanillo´s Wildlife Refuge
Internarse en un Bosque Tropical Húmedo y dejarse envolver por la espesura de la selva y sus enigmáticos sonidos es una de las experiencias más sorprendentes e interesantes que se pueden realizar en el Caribe, en especial en el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo, una de las zonas costeras más bonitas y exuberantes de Costa Rica, un alejado y exótico paraje que posee una gran diversidad de hábitats, tanto terrestres como marinos.
Penetrating into a tropical rainforest and being surrounded by dense jungle and its enigmatic sounds is one of the most amazing and interesting experiences you can have in the Caribbean, especially in the Gandoca Manzanillo´s Wildlife Refuge, one of the most beautiful and lush coastal areas of Costa Rica, remote and exotic spot, which has a great diversity of terrestrial and marine habitats.
Su parte terrestre está formada por pequeñas colinas, con alturas máximas de 115 metros, tapizadas por una densa selva tropical, con sectores catalogados como bosque primario. Si te interesa la naturaleza y eres amante de los animales te recomendamos explorar los senderos que se internan en este refugio acompañado de un guía naturalista local que te ayudará a observar la fauna en estado salvaje y te desvelará algunos secretos de la selva.
Its terrestrial area is formed by small hills, with maximum heights of 115 meters, covered by a dense tropical forest, with areas classified as primary forest. If you’re interested in nature and you are an animal lover we recommend exploring the trails of this refuge accompanied by a local naturalist guide that will help you observe its wildlife and will reveal some secrets of the jungle.

get drinking water, heal and bandage a wound or obtain food. You will witness the flight of a toucan, the jumping of spider monkeys, the cries of the howler monkeys and sympathy of the capuchin ones. You’ll spot still green iguanas regulating their body temperature in the sun, hanging sloths, tiny red frogs jumping on the roots of trees, beautiful poisonous tinsels peacefully sleeping, huge bullet ants and the unimaginably weird insects. The refuge has two entrances or sectors, Manzanillo and Gandoca, two towns that stand out for its Afro Caribbean character.

El refugio fue creado el 29 de octubre 1985, protege 5.013 ha. en su parte terrestre y 4.436 ha. en su parte marina. The refuge was created on October 29 1985. It protects 5,013 terrestrial and 4,436 marine hectares. Besides walking through its amazing forest you can swim in its pristine white sandy beaches, take a boat ride along its steeped coast and watch the 3 species of dolphins that live here, you can dive on a coral reef teeming with life, watch the nesting of the leatherback sea turtle or navigate in a rowboat or kayak through the mangroves of Gandoca´s Lagoon, different ways of knowing this privileged corner of the world

ARRECIFES DE CORAL. Snorkel y Buceo en el Mar Caribe. CORAL REEFS. Snorkeling and Diving in the Caribbean Sea Para los curiosos y amantes del mundo submarino el Caribe esconde uno de los mayores tesoros de Costa Rica, el arrecife de coral, uno de los ecosistemas más significativos y ricos en diversidad de flora y fauna marina. Este se extiende a lo largo de la costa del Caribe Sur, desde el Parque Nacional Cahuita hasta el Refugio de Vida Silvestre GandocaManzanillo. Sumergirse en sus aguas es una gratificante aventura que debes disfrutar en tu visita a esta región.
Para la práctica del snorkel te basta con unas gafas y un tubo de bucear para explorar los arrecifes más cercanos a la costa, estos se encuentran en Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva y Manzanillo. Pero si quieres descubrir el mejor arrecife de coral, donde la fauna submarina es mas abundante, te recomendamos el Parque Nacional de Cahuita, un área silvestre que protege uno de los arrecifes coralinos más importantes de Costa Rica, donde podrás pasar horas mirando los corales y los multicolores peces tropicales.

Este arrecife, que se extiende frente a Punta Cahuita, cuenta con una biodiversidad marina extraordinaria, con 35 especies de coral, como el cuerno de alce, el coral de fuego, el abanico de mar o los cerebriformes. Los corales son estructuras formadas por el esqueleto calcáreo que producen unas colonias de diminutos animales llamados pólipos de coral, unos invertebrados parientes de las anémonas y las medusas, que se alimentan del plancton marino que trae el oleaje y crean estructuras que crecen unos 2,5 centímetros al año. Además es el hábitat de 128 especies de algas, 140 especies de moluscos, 44 crustáceos y 123 especies de peces de diferentes colores y tamaños, los más llamativos son el pez ángel reina, el isabelita y el pez loro azul, además se encuentran la barracuda, manta rayas, langostas, morenas, erizos y esponjas que sirven de alimento a la tortuga carey, así como 3 especies de tiburones. Eso si, para acceder al arrecife coralino del Parque Nacional Cahuita podrás hacerlo únicamente acompañado de un guía en un paseo en bote hasta la barrera de coral, donde podrás hacer snorkel en dos lugares diferentes del arrecife para terminar en Punta Cahuita donde tendrás tiempo para descansar en la playa y refrescarte con agua y frutas que te ofrecerá tu guía. En este punto, si te gustan las caminatas, puedes comenzar el regreso a Cahuita por un sendero de unos 3 kilómetros a través del Parque Nacional.
El Caribe Sur es un buen destino para la práctica de buceo con tanque, hay dos centros de buceo especializados, Punta Uva Dive Center y Reef Runner Divers. Las inmersiones se suelen realizar en el área comprendida entre Puerto Viejo y Punta Mona, ya que en el Parque Nacional Cahuita no están permitidas las inmersiones con tanque. Si nunca has buceado puedes realizar el “Discover Scuba Diving”, también llamado “bautismo de buceo”, una experiencia que dura 2 o 3 horas con una clase teórica y una práctica que te permitirá realizar después inmersiones profundas bajo la supervisión de un instructor, ó puedes realizar la Certificación de Buceador de Aguas Abiertas, que dura 3 o 4 días, y de esa forma conseguir el Open Water Diver que te permitirá bucear por todo el mundo.
Lo importante de estas actividades es tomar conciencia sobre la fragilidad del arrecife y cuidarlo de forma responsable. El mar Caribe te espera con sus cálidas aguas turquesas y su abundante vida submarina para que vivas una experiencia única y mágica.

It extends along the coast of Southern Caribbean from the Cahuita National Park to Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Submerging in its water is a rewarding adventure that you should enjoy in your visit to this region. For snorkeling you just need a snorkeling gear so to explore the near-shore reefs, located in Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo. If you want to discover the best coral reef, where underwater wildlife is more abundant, we recommend the Cahuita National Park, a wild area refuge that protects one of the most important coral reefs in Costa Rica, where you can spend hours looking at corals and multicolored tropical fish. This reef, which extends in front of Punta Cahuita, has an extraordinary marine biodiversity, with 35 coral species such as elk horn, fire coral, the sea fan or cerebriform. Corals are structures formed by a calcareous skeleton produced by colonies of tiny animals called coral polyps, invertebrate relatives of the anemones and jellyfish, which feed on marine plankton brought by waves creating structures that grow about 2.5 centimeters a year. You can access to the coral reef of Cahuita National Park only with a guide on a boat ride to the coral reef where you can snorkel in two different parts of the reef and then finish the trip at Punta Cahuita where you will have time to rest on the beach and refresh with water and fruits offered by your guide. At this point, if you like hiking, you can begin the return to Cahuita on a trail about 3 kilometers long through the National Park. The Southern Caribbean is a great destination for scuba diving, there are two specialized diving centers, Punta Uva Dive Center and Reef Runner Divers. The dives are often conducted in the area between Puerto Viejo and Punta Mona, since in the Cahuita National Park tank dives are not allowed. If you have never dived before you can perform the “Discover Scuba Diving”, also called “ diving baptism” an experience that lasts 2 or 3 hours with a lecture and a practice that will allow you to make deep dives under the supervision of an instructor, or if not you can get an Open Water Diver Certification, which lasts 3 or 4 days, and then allows you to dive worldwide. En Playa Negra de Puerto Viejo, frente al hotel La Perla Negra, encontrarás un excelente ¨beach break¨ de izquierdas y derechas, y en la misma playa junto a la entrada del pueblo, donde se encuentra el ¨Lanchón¨, se genera una pequeña y perfecta derecha con fondo de arena. El centro de Puerto Viejo cuenta con la conocida Salsa Brava, una ola de estilo hawaiano que se forma en aguas profundas y rompe a derecha y a izquierda sobre un afilado arrecife, una de las olas más fuerte de Costa Rica, cuenta con tres picos, el primero tira una izquierda corta, rápida y cilíndrica y una derecha que descarga su poder hacia el segundo y tercer pico, solo para expertos.
In Playa Negra in Puerto Viejo, in front of the Hotel La Perla Negra, you will find an excellent ¨ beach break ¨ of lefts and rights, and on the same beach near the entrance of the village, where the ¨ Lanchón ¨ is, you will find a small and perfect right on sand bottom. The center of Puerto Viejo has the famous Salsa Brava, a Hawaiian style wave that forms in deep waters and breaks right and left over a sharp reef, being one of the strongest waves in Costa Rica. It has three peaks; the first throws a short, quick, left tube and a right that gives power to the second and third peaks, recommended only for expert surfers.
In Cocles Beach you find the popular “beach break” with fast rights and lefts, this is the liveliest beach for surfers. Further south you can also surf in Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo and Playa Grande. Also in Limon can also find surf spots such as Playa Bonita and Isla Uvita, which must be reached by boat.
En Playa Cocles está el popular ¨beach break¨ con derechas e izquierdas rápidas, esta es la playa mas animada para los surfeadores. Mas al sur también se puede surfear en playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, playa Grande y Manzanillo. También en Limón destacan lugares como Playa Bonita e Isla Uvita, a la cual hay que llegar en lancha.

Among the most beautiful and interesting sites you will find the Huacas waterfall, in whose walls they were found dozens of tombs and ruins of the first communities that settled on the banks of the Pacuare. Another sector is the impressive Dos Montañas Canyon, where the river narrows to measure just 15 meters enclosed between two vertical walls that rise more than 100 meters high.

Canopy y Aventura en la Jungla Canopy and Rainforest Adventure El canopy, también conocido como zip lines o tirolinas, es una de las actividades de aventura mas populares en Costa Rica y el Caribe Sur uno de los mejores destinos para realizarla. El canopy situado en el valle del río Carbón, de la compañía Terraventuras, destaca por contar con 23 plataformas, casi 3 kilómetros de cables y en especial por el frondoso bosque tropical en que está enclavado.

Expedición por los CANALES DE TORTUGUERO Expedition through TORTUGUERO´S CANALS Tortuguero is one of the most remote, special and unique places of Costa Rica, where there are no roads, so the access to this magical region is by navigating through a complex web of aquatic ecosystems, lagoons, canals and rivers that wind through dense vegetation, making of the journey a real safari, due to its dramatic scenery and the amount of wildlife you’ll find on your way. There are several ways to access Tortuguero though certainly the most beautiful is the one from the Moin´s pier, in Limon, where you will board the boat that will take you for 4 hours along the canals and rivers towards Tortuguero, located at 80 kilometers north of Limón.
Tortuguero es uno de los lugares mas remotos de Costa Rica, especial y único, donde no existen las carreteras, el acceso a esta mágica región se realiza navegando a través de una compleja red de ecosistemas acuáticos, lagunas, canales y ríos que serpentean entre paredes de densa vegetación, que hacen del trayecto un verdadero safari, por sus increíbles paisajes y la cantidad de vida salvaje que encontrarás. Hay varias rutas de acceso a Tortuguero aunque sin duda la que tiene mas encanto es desde el embarcadero de Moín, en Limón, donde abordarás la lancha que te conducirá durante 4 horas por los canales y ríos hasta Tortuguero, situado a 80 kilómetros al norte de Limón.
La travesía por los canales de Tortuguero es la mejor oportunidad para contemplar la extraordinaria biodiversidad del Bosque Tropical Muy Húmedo, un bosque pantanoso sobre terrenos inundados en el que podemos encontrar más de 400 especies de árboles que llegan a medir hasta 50 metros de altura como el sangrillo, el cativo o el almendro de montaña, y alrededor de 2.200 especies de otras plantas.

En este área natural encuentran refugio el manatí o vaca marina, además es el hábitat de la danta, el jaguar, el ocelote, tepezcuintes, mapaches, martillas, nutrias y el murciélago pescador. Entre los anfibios destacan las familias de las dendrobates y las Agalichnys. Alberga aves como la lapa verde, el pavón, el gavilán cangrejero, el trogón violáceo y la oropéndola. El Parque Nacional fue creado en 1.975 y protege 31.187 ha. terrestres y 52.265 ha. marinas, que junto al Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barra del Colorado se extienden a lo largo del litoral caribeño desde el río Parismina hasta el río San Juan, frontera con Nicaragua, protegiendo ecosistemas tales como lagunas, ríos, pantanos, islas fluviales, bosques y colinas. Su clima es muy húmedo y caliente, es una de las áreas más lluviosas del Caribe. No cuenta con una estación seca, aunque existe una menor frecuencia de lluvias en Febrero, Marzo y Octubre. Una vez en Tortuguero podrás navegar en lancha o canoa a remos a través de los canales secundarios del Parque Nacional, algunos de gran interés como Caño Palma, un canal de aguas oscuras, Caño Harold o Caño Chiquero, así como caminar por alguno de sus senderos. El Ministerio de Ambiente cuenta con una oficina en la entrada del Parque Nacional, cuyo acceso cuesta 10 dólares. 23

Among the amphibians you will find families of Dendrobates and Agalichnys. It is home to birds like the macaw, the peacock, the black hawk, the violet trogon and the golden oriole. The National Park was created in 1975 and protects 31,187 of land hectares and 52,265 of marine hectares, which together with the National Wildlife Refuge of Barra del Colorado they extend along the Caribbean coast from the river to the Parismina to the San Juan River, border with Nicaragua, protecting ecosystems such as lakes, rivers, swamps, river islands, forests and hills. Los aztecas aprendieron de los mayas sobre el cultivo y el uso del cacao y lo llamaron “xocolatl” que mezclaban con especias. Una taza de “xocolatl” eliminaba el cansancio y estimulaba la capacidad mental, era fuente de sabiduría espiritual, energía corporal y potencia sexual. También usaban las semillas como moneda para pagar los impuestos en el sistema feudal azteca.
The Mayans created a bitter drink roasting the cocoa beans they called “Cacahuat” consumed only by kings and nobles. The wizards prescribed it for therapeutic purposes and warriors took it as a tonic. The Aztecs learned from the Mayans about the cultivation and use of cacao and named it “xocolatl” which they mixed it with spices. A cup of “xocolatl” eliminated fatigue and stimulated mental capacity, it was a source of spiritual wisdom, body energy and sexual potency. They also used the seeds as currency to pay taxes in the Aztec feudal system. In 1519 the Spanish conqueror, Hernán Cortés, on his arrival in Mexico, decided to export it to Europe, where they thought the new drink was fascinating. The Spanish court upheld the recipe as a state secret and only the monks knew how to turn the fruit in chocolate, which they adapted to the European palate, replacing heavy spices used by Native Americans for honey, sugar and milk.
En 1.519 el conquistador español Hernán Cortés, a su llegada a México, decidió exportarlo a Europa, donde el nuevo brebaje resultaba fascinante. La corte española mantuvo su receta como secreto de Estado y sólo los monjes conocían como convertir el fruto en chocolate, que adaptaron al paladar europeo, sustituyendo las fuertes especias utilizadas por los nativos americanos por miel, azúcar y leche.
In Talamanca´s indigenous reserves are heirs of this art still prepare this nectar of the gods. You can enjoy a stroll through some of the organic cacao farms with a guide that will show you the fresh fruit of the cacao, called “cob”, filled with grains or seeds, covered by a mucilaginous white palatable pulp that they will give you to taste. The chocolate making begins with the fermentation and drying of the seed, where the grains are extended for several days, after by washing and polishing then they achieve a free waste grain, ready to be roasted, husked, grinded and pressed until obtaining a soft paste, pure cacao to which they after add sugar, spices or flavorings until they get desired emulsion, the chocolate.

En las reservas indígenas de Talamanca quedan herederos de este arte que todavía preparan a fuego lento este exquisito manjar de dioses. Podrás pasear por alguna de las fincas orgánicas de cacao acompañado de un guía que te mostrará el fruto fresco del cacao, llamado “mazorca”, relleno de granos o semillas cubiertas por una pulpa mucilaginosa de color blanco y de sabor agradable que te darán a probar. La elaboración del chocolate comienza con la fermentación y posterior secado de la semilla, donde los granos son extendidos por varios días, después el lavado y el pulido logran un grano libre de residuos, para ser tostado, descascarillado, molido y prensado hasta obtener una pasta de textura suave, cacao puro al que después se añaden azúcar, especias o aromas hasta obtener la emulsión deseada, el chocolate. El cultivo del cacao llegó al Caribe Sur en 1.924 y para los años 50 ya significaba el principal medio de subsistencia para los pequeños agricultores de la región. En el Museo Nacional del Cacao, Cacao Trails, situado entre Puerto Viejo y Cahuita, podrás acercarte a su historia, ver los utensilios y maquinarias que se usaron en pleno esplendor del cacao y conocer el método de elaboración del chocolate. También Chocorart, en Playa Chiquita, es un proyecto abierto al visitante donde en un tour guiado podrás conocer los secretos de esta planta, desde su siembra hasta la recolección del fruto y participar en la elaboración de tu propio chocolate. Cacao farming came to the Southern Caribbean in 1924 and in the 50´s it already meant the main livelihood for the small farmers of the region. In the National Museum of Cacao, Cacao Trails, located between Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, you can get closer look to their history, see the tools and machinery that were used in the splendor of cacao and know the chocolate elaboration method. Also Chocorart, in Playa Chiquita, is open to visitors on a guided tour where you can learn the secrets of this plant, from planting to harvesting the fruit and participate in the elaboration of your own chocolate. Talamanca Indigenous Reservation. The river and the Yorkin community. The Talamanca Mountain Range is the most rugged, vast and unexplored region of Costa Rica. It has landscapes of great beauty where a dense tropical forest coveres mountains and valleys that are home to the ancestral indigenous peoples, especially the Cabecar and Bribri whose culture, beliefs, traditions, language and architecture have been preserved almost intact over the centuries. They are the true sons of this land and the soul of Talamanca. This mysterious and impenetrable mountain range has always been a natural barrier, few tourists penetrate inland Talamanca, and it´s their loss, because when touring in this region you can feel the harmony and the strong relationship between man and nature. At present some of these communities undertake projects in order to attract visitors in the context of respect for nature and cultures. Yorkin is one of these remote communities. The access to this community is from Bamboo, on the banks of river Sixaola in a two-hour “cayuco” ride up the Yorkin River which rises from the Kapekicha hill on Panamanian side of la Amistad International Park, which marks the natural border between Costa Rica and Panama. The “cayuco” is a traditional Indigenous type of canoe, sometimes aided by poles. More than15 years ago, in the Yorkin the community group Women Estibrawpa “craft persons” in Bribri language, was born, who with the support of various organizations were given the task of raising a lodge built in their Indigenous style, which despite its simple features it counts with the necessary facilities for a pleasant stay, offering accommodation, food and excursions in the area. Thanks to the hospitality and good organization of this community for receiving visitors you can live with them and learn their way of life, customs and listen to their legends at night. You will learn about their ancestors and know their vision of the world, while craftsmen will show you how their pieces are made with materials taken from the jungle. On your visit you can feel the strong energy inside the U-sure, typical conical ranch covered by palm. It is used as a communal lounge and serves as a space for various activities and events for members of the community. There you´ll enjoy of delicious food cooked in Indigenous style on wood fire with food from their crops, and they´ll proudly teach you the secrets for making chocolate, a process in which you will be able to participate and elaborate your own delicious choco-banano. An admirable thing is the great knowledge that these people have about the healing properties of plants and they will show them to you on a walk through the jungle on your way to a superb suspension bridge over the river where you can swim in the clear water pools offered by their rivers. This valley offers many interesting places to be visited where local guides are always ready to show them to you. From here you can also visit other communities or get to know the Cerro Buena Vista, at about an hour from the community, with its breathtaking view of the mountain range Talamanca and large primary forests. Hace mas de 15 años nació en la comunidad de Yorkin el grupo de Mujeres Estibrawpa “personas artesanas” en lengua Bribri, quienes con el apoyo de diversas organizaciones se dieron a la tarea de levantar un albergue construido al estilo indígena, y aunque sencillo cuenta con las instalaciones necesarias para una agradable estadía, te brindan el servicio de hospedaje, alimentación y excursiones en la zona. Gracias a su hospitalidad y a la buena organización de esta comunidad para recibir visitantes podrás convivir con ellos y conocer su sistema de vida, sus costumbres y sus leyendas que te relatarán por las noches, sabrás sobre sus antepasados y conocerás la visión que ellos tienen del mundo, mientras que los artesanos te muestran como elaboran sus piezas con los materiales que extraen de la selva. COMUNIDAD DE UATSI Talamanca Indigenous Reservation. The Uatsi community. Few kilometers from Bribri, in the valleys of Lower Talamanca there are several communities that develop projects so as visitors can learn their culture and share experiences with the local population. Uatsi is one of these communities, where camouflaged in dense vegetation you will find typical indigenous constructions, such as Rancho Grande where in order to access it you will have to cross a curious suspension bridge that will open the door to this other universe. At Rancho Grande you will find Don Silverio´s family hospitality. He is over 110 years old, and with whom you will share a day full of new experiences. You will get to know the typical Indigenous houses made of organic materials, with wooden floors and chonta (palm species) walls tied up with plant fibers and lianas, with roofs covered with suita leaves. They will teach you about the process of elaborating cacao and you will taste delicious organic chocolates with exotic flavors, made in the traditional way. You’ll get to try the chicha, ceremonial beverage produced by the fermentation of corn, which produces a heady effect, and then you will finish the visit testing your aim with traditional bow and arrow shooting. You can visit a medicinal plants garden and learn about their properties as this town has a deep knowledge of herbal medicine. You can also find the typical Round U-sure Ranch which reproduces the universe created by Sibu, their God, where the Awa (Sukia or doctor) treats his patients with a combination of healing plants, psychology and suggestion techniques, where the songs and rituals invoke the telluric healing forces. Near Uatsi you have the Volio waterfall, perfect for cooling in the middle of the forest. On your visit you can buy Indigenous crafts for everyday uses, such as reed basketry, burío and pita bags and backpacks, bows and arrows made from peach palm wood or pumpkins called gourds for transportation and storage of water and food, all decorated with vegetable dyes, and it is a good opportunity to contribute with these families. Uatsi is the perfect place to spend a day in contact with these ancient cultures and enjoy the natural beauty of this area. Te darán a probar la chicha, bebida ceremonial producida por la fermentación del maíz, que produce un efecto un tanto embriagador, para terminar la visita tirando con arco y flechas tradicionales poniendo a prueba tu puntería. Podrás visitar un jardín de plantas medicinales y aprender sobre sus propiedades ya que este pueblo posee un profundo conocimiento de herbolaria. También podrás conocer el típico rancho redondo U-sure el cual reproduce el universo creado por Sibu, su Dios, donde el Awa (Sukia ó medico) trata a sus enfermos con una conjunción de plantas curativas, psicología y sugestión, donde los cantos y rituales invocan a las fuerzas telúricas para lograr la sanación. Cerca de Uatsi se encuentra la catarata de Volio, perfecta para refrescarse en el interior del bosque. DESOVE DE LAS TORTUGAS MARINAS SEA TURTLE NESTING Estar en una playa por la noche viendo el proceso de desove de una tortuga marina es una experiencia inolvidable. De las 7 especies de tortuga marina que existen 4 de ellas anidan en las playas del Caribe costarricense, la Baula (Dermochelys coriocea), la Carey (Eretmochelys imbricta), la Caguama (Caretta caretta) y en mayor número la Verde (Chelonia mydas).
Being on a beach at night watching the process of a sea turtle nesting is an unforgettable experience. Of the 7 species of sea turtles that exist 4 of them nest on the beaches of the Costa Rican Caribbean. They are the Leatherback (Dermochelys coriocea), the Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricta), the Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and in larger number the Green turtle (Chelonia mydas).
La tortuga Verde se convierte en la protagonista en Tortuguero entre los meses de Julio y Octubre, una especie que llega a la madurez sexual a los 30 años y migra entonces hacia las zonas de desove que suelen ser la misma playa en que nacieron y emergen del agua en la noche buscando un lugar seguro para desovar.
The Green turtle becomes the protagonist in Tortuguero between the months of July and October, a species that reaches sexual maturity at 30 years old and then migrate to spawning areas that are usually the same beach where they were born. They emerge from water at night looking for a safe place to spawn.
Las hembras desovan cada dos o tres años, o mas, y realiza de tres a cinco puestas en cada ocasión. El desove dura unas dos horas y media, comienza limpiando el área con sus extremidades para después cavar con sus aletas posteriores una cámara de unos 70 centímetros de profundidad donde depositará entre 100 y 120 huevos, después tapará la cámara con arena y cubrirá el nido para camuflarlo de los posibles depredadores
The females spawn every two or three years or even more, and lay the eggs three to five times on each occasion. Spawning takes about two and a half hours, they start cleaning the area with their limbs and then dig with their hind flippers a chamber about 70 centimeters deep where they lay between 100 and 120 eggs, then they cover up the

naturales. La incubación de los huevos dura unos 57 días y el sexo de las tortugas dependerá de la temperatura del nido, si es mayor de 30 grados saldrán hembras y si es menor machos. Las crías nacen todas a la vez, rompen el huevo y salen del nido en la noche, caminando frenéticamente hacia el agua y nadando contra la corriente hasta alcanzar las aguas profundas.
Entre los meses de Marzo y Junio las playas del Caribe, en especial Gandoca y Tortuguero, reciben la visita de otra tortuga, la Baula, que viene al trópico a desovar tras una monumental migración desde las aguas frías cercanas al Ártico, zona en que se alimenta. Esta tortuga, la mas grande del mundo, de unos 160 centímetros, realiza un gran esfuerzo para salir a la playa y depositar sus huevos en el nido excavado en la arena, una actividad que la hembra realiza hasta 10 veces en una temporada depositando un promedio de 80 huevos cada vez. Pasados 60 días las crías saldrán del nido y comenzarán su carrera hacia el mar y la lucha por perpetuar su especie. Tanto en Gandoca como en Tortuguero se ejecutan programas de investigación y conservación que están dando sus frutos. Son el lugar ideal para contemplar el desove de la tortuga o el nacimiento de las crías acompañado de algún guía local certificado, el paseo por la playa se realiza de noche. Un espectáculo natural digno del mejor documental jamás filmado.

The incubation of the eggs lasts about 57 days and the sex of turtles will depend on the temperature of the nest, if it is greater than 30 degrees females will be born and if it is lower they will be males. They are born all at once, they break the egg and leave the nest at night, walking frantically towards the water and swimming against the current so as to reach deep waters. Between March and June the beaches of the Caribbean, especially the ones of Gandoca and Tortuguero, are visited by another turtle, the leatherback, which comes to the tropics to spawn after a monumental migration from the cold waters near the Arctic zone where they feed themselves. This turtle, the largest in the world, about 160 centimeters long, takes a lot of effort to go to the beach and lay their eggs in the nest dug in the sand, an activity that the female makess up to 10 times in a season, depositing an average of 80 eggs at a time. After 60 days, the newborns will leave the nest and begin their race to the sea and the struggle to perpetuate their species.
In both Gandoca and Tortuguero there are research and conservation programs that are successful. They are the perfect place to watch the nesting of turtle or the birth of them accompanied by a certified local guide, the walk along the beach is at night. A natural spectacle worthy of the best documentary ever filmed.

También cuando el mar está en calma te puedes bañar con el caballo.
Los paseos suelen durar desde una hora y media para arriba y al final de la ruta se regresa de nuevo a los establos. Es una actividad familiar que se puede realizar en cualquier época del año y si necesitas iniciarte en el mundo de los caballos tu ¨instructor¨ te dará una útil clase de como montar y en 15 minutos estarás en disposición de iniciar la excursión a lomos de uno de sus nobles caballos.

Some horse riding routes go into in the thick tropical jungle, surrounded by ancient trees and the sounds of its unknown wildlife, walking slowly to the bed of a small river until you reach a remote waterfall. Other routes combine a ride in the coastal forest with beach rides ending at a deserted tropical beach where you will experience the freedom of riding along the seashore. Also when the sea is calm you can swim with the horse.
The rides usually last from one and a half hour up finishing it on the stables. It is a family activity that can be done at any time of year and if you need to get started in the world of horses your “instructor” will give you a useful lesson on how to ride and within 15 minutes you’ll be ready to start the tour on of one their noble horses.

Parque Nacional • National Park
l Parque Nacional Cahuita está ubicado en el litoral caribeño, 42 km. al sur de la Limón. Su creación se dio en Mayo de 1.978 y protege un área natural de 1.067 hectáreas en el área terrestre, 22.400 ha. en la parte marina y 600 ha. de arrecife. El parque forma parte de la región basal tropical del Caribe, su altitud máxima es de 10 metros sobre el nivel del mar y se encuentra dentro de la zona de vida denominada Bosque Tropical Húmedo. Conserva uno de los sitios costeros más bellos del país, rodeado de playas de arena blanca galardonadas con la Bandera Azul Ecológica en los sectores de Puerto Vargas y Playa Blanca, y un mar de aguas de color azul turquesa. Punta Cahuita está compuesta en su mayor parte por un pantano que ocupa la depresión existente entre la plataforma de coral y la tierra firme, que se formó debido a un levantamiento tectónico. Protege una muestra de bosque pantanoso, cuyas principales especies de árboles son el cativo (Prioria copaifera), el sangrillo (Pterocarpus officinalis), el fruto dorado (Virota koschnyi), rodales puros de yolillo y un espeso manglar, mayormente formado por mangle colorado (Rhizophora mangle). Otros hábitats presentes son el bosque mixto no inundado con especies como el guaitil (Genipa americana), el jorco (Garcinia intermedia) y el cerrillo (Symphonia globulifera), y la vegetación litoral con cocoteros (Cocos nusiferas) y papaturros (Coccoloba uvifera). La fauna es variada, son comunes el mono congo, el mapache y el pizote, entre las aves hay especies como el ibis verde (Mesembrinibus 39

ahuita´s National Park is located on the Caribbean coast, 42 km. south of Limon. Its creation was in May 1978 and it protects a natural area of 1,067 terrestrial hectares, 22,400 marine hectares and 600 coralline hectares. The park is part of the tropical Caribbean basal region, its maximum height is of 10 meters above sea level and is within the Life zone known as Humid Tropical Forest. It preserves one of the finest coastal sites in the country, surrounded by white sand beaches awarded the Ecological Blue Flag in the areas of Puerto Vargas and Playa Blanca, and an sea of turquoise blue waters. Cahuita is mainly composed by a swamp that occupies the existent depression between the coral platform and mainland, which was formed due to a tectonic uplift. It protects a swamp forest, whose main tree species are the cativo (Prioria copaifera), the dragon blood tree (Pterocarpus officinalis), the golden fruit (Virot koschnyi), yolillo palms and mangroves mostly composed by the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle). Other present habitats are the not flooded mixed forest with species like the genip (Genipa americana), and the monkey fruit (Garcinia intermedia), and the coastal vegetation that has coconut palm trees (Cocos nusiferas) and common sea grape (Coccoloba uvifera). The fauna is varied, its common to spot howler monkeys, raccoons and coatis, among birds there are species like the green ibis (Mesembrinibus cayennensis), the green kingfisher (Chloroceryle inda), the

night heron (Nyctanassa violet) and the boat-billed heron. They are also abundant amphibians and crabs, such as the atlantic ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) and also on the beaches you have polychaetes, gastropods, isopods and decapods. Its beaches are chosen by several sea turtles species to nest, such as green and hawksbill turtle. This wilde area protects one of the best developed coralline reefs of the Caribbean coast and one of the most important within Costa Rica, which extends from Punta Cahuita, between the river Perezoso and Puerto Vargas. Part of the reef platform is submerged approximately 11 meters below sea level and over 1 meter emerged after the earthquake of 22 April 1991. It has an extraordinary marine biodiversity, consisting of 35 coral species, including elkhorn (Acropora palmata) and the symmetrical brain coral (Diploria stringosa and Colcophyllia natans), mixed with 128 algae species, 140 mollusks species, 44 crustaceans species, 123 fish species of different colors and sizes, the queen angel fish (Holacanthus ciliaris), the blue angel fish and the blue parrotfish being the most striking ones. You also find barracudas, suckerfish, stingrays, lobsters, moray eels, sea urchins and sponges wich provides with food to the hawksbill turtles, 3 shark species such as the whitetipped shark (Triaenodon obesus). Among the main atolls for diving and snorkeling we recommend the Coral Perezoso in front of River Perezoso´s mouth and Coral Eduardo in the area of Puerto Vargas. For hiking lovers the park has a trail of 7 km. that runs along the coast between Cahuita and Puerto Vargas. In both sectors the park has access and information booths. Cuenta con una biodiversidad marina extraordinaria, compuesta de 35 especies de corales, como el cuerno de alce (Acropora palmata) y los cerebriformes (Diploria stringosa y Colcophyllia natans) mezclados con las 128 especies de algas, 140 especies de moluscos, 44 crustáceos y 123 especies de peces de diferentes colores y tamaños, los más llamativos son el pez ángel reina (Holacanthus ciliaris), el isabelita y el pez loro azul, además se encuentran la barracuda, la rémora azul, manta rayas, langostas, morenas, erizos y esponjas que sirven de alimento a la tortuga carey, y 3 especies de tiburones, como el tiburón aleta blanca (Triaenodon obesus). Entre los atolones de interés para bucear o hacer snorkel destacan Coral Perezoso frente al río Perezoso y Coral Eduardo en el sector de Puerto Vargas. Para los amantes de las caminatas el parque cuenta con un sendero de 7 km. que discurre junto a la costa entre Cahuita y Puerto Vargas. En ambos sectores del parque se encuentran casetas de entrada e información. El precio de entrada al parque es de 10 dólares. Mas al sur, a 6 kilómetros, está Playa Chiquita, un buen punto para practicar snorkel en el arrecife coralino y el lugar ideal para sentir que estas solo en tu soñada playa. Punta Uva, a 8 kilómetros, es uno de los lugares con mas encanto de la costa caribeña, un peñón cubierto de vegetación rodeado a ambos lados de playas de arenas doradas y blancas, a la orilla de unas tranquilas y transparentes aguas donde podrás refrescarte, relajarte y dorar tu piel en un paisaje de ensueño. En la quebrada Ernesto podrás bajar practicando kayak hasta el mar y rodear esta magnífica esmeralda verde, para después bucear en sus turquesas aguas. Playa Grande, mas al sur, se extiende desde Punta Uva hasta Manzanillo y es una de las mas solitarias y tranquilas de la zona, rodeada de cocoteros que se alzan hasta el cielo. Kilómetros de playa donde perderte y ser parte de una naturaleza llena de vida. Hacia el interior encontramos la Baja Talamanca, montañas y valles cubiertos de bosque, donde están algunas de las reservas indígenas, como la Kekoldi o la Bribri, donde su gente ha sabido conservar su cultura y tradiciones a lo largo de los siglos y en cuyos territorios se esconden pequeñas poblaciones en total armonía con la naturaleza. En comunidades como Watsi o Yorkín podrás compartir con esta ancestral cultura y conocer sus construcciones a base de materiales naturales, su gastronomía o su artesanía, en un marco natural incomparable de bosques, ríos, cataratas y puentes colgantes, … un mundo que sin duda te sorprenderá. uerto Viejo´s development and boom is due to its great natural beauty, where the tropical forest splendour and the Caribbean Sea warmth commune, and because of its cosmopolitan atmosphere; it is a crossroads of cultures from every continent that has added on to its original indigenous culture including the afro descendants that have made these coasts their homes throughout history. Certainly is a natural and cultural treasure of great value. Puerto Viejo faces the ocean, wetlands predominate its lands as well as the typical vegetation of coastal flora. It is formed by a thread of successive small beaches of golden sands and pools of quiet water lying between coral reefs, ideal for swimming. The Chino and Parquecito beaches are amongst the most well-known, also natural ports for the local fishermen. Stanford and Salsa Brava, a deep pool between reefs used as access to one of the most perfect waves, Salsa Brava is one of the biggest and powerful waves of Costa Rica, attracting the most daring surfers. Playa Negra at the town entrance spreads northwards towards the Cahuita National Park, a lovely invitation to long relaxing walks along the sea coast, under the sun. The sea is perfect for water sports, surf and boggie board ranking as top of the list, kayak and fishing are enjoyed very much as well, and another option is a speedboat getaway to a remote beach on the coast where you can spend a real Robinson Crusoe day, far from the madding crowds. You can snorkel or scuba-dive in the myriad of coral reefs that decorate the coast and discover a submarine world abundant with life and colour. Hills covered with Humid Tropical Forest surround the town, always green and teeming with waterfalls and wild life. Trails and roads for walks accompanied by a Nature guide where you can decipher its secrets, and get to understand the delicate web that exists in these pristine ecosystems are, indeed, a special enjoyment to experience. Trecking and horseback riding along the beaches, rivers or mountains, bycicle rides, quads and canopy tours over the forest, river or canyon rafting, botanical garden visits, etc, are many of the options at hand if you wish to experience adventure and connect with Wild Nature. Only a few kilometers away are the Wild Life Refuge of Gandoca-Manzanillo and the Kekoldi Indian Reservation. They take care of a project that breeds and protects the Green Iguana and have built a tower for birdwatching of migratory species. The Bribri Indian Reserves still preserve their culture as well as their ancient language, here you can see most of their housing built with organic materials and how they use a complex network of rivers for commerce and communication.

PLAYA COCLES T
he Community of Cocles begins 1.5 kms south of Puerto Viejo with its golden beach spreading for more than 3 kms. It is bordered by elegant coconut trees and trails parallel to the beach where giant trees, sea grapes, bushes, philodendrons, plantains, heliotropes and epiphites are beheld as well as hummingbirds, kiskadee and tanagers searching for polen, sloths sleeping on their tummies in a guarumo tree or slippery lizards and crabs escaping from sight. Other trails and walks head into the mountain into the heart of the Humid Tropical Forest and into the Kekoldi Indian Reservation, through hills covered in dense vegetation, hiding one of the most unknown natural marvels of the area; the Cocles Fall. This is two or three hours along the road, following the river or trails from Puerto Viejo, always accompanied by reliable guides. The coastal and sea area are protected under the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, where you find the mouths of the Cocles and Negro Rivers leading to an important wetland habitat for numerous species such as alligators, otters, waterfowls such as herons, kingfsihers or common black hawks. The main star in Cocles is the beach, as it is the nearest to Puerto Viejo, popular and happy, especially as it is an excellent surfing and booggie board spot, for experts or amateurs, in the well-known point of Beach Break. In front of this point there is a small rocky island, a refuge for many birds that fly back to roost in the evenings, and where, according to legend, a pirate treasure lies hidden.

Otros senderos y caminos se internan en la montaña al corazón del Bosque Tropical Húmedo y a la Reserva Indígena Kekoldi a través de colinas cubiertas de densa vegetación, que esconden una de las maravillas naturales más desconocidas de la zona, la Catarata de Cocles, a 2 o 3 horas de camino siguiendo el curso del río o por senderos desde Puerto Viejo, siempre acompañado de un guía que conozca la ruta. Su zona costera y marítima está protegida por el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo, aquí desembocan el río Cocles y el río Negro dando lugar a un importante humedal, hábitat de numerosas especies como el caimán, la nutria, aves acuáticas como garzas, el martín pescador o el gavilán cangrejero. La playa es la gran protagonista en Cocles, por ser la mas cercana a Puerto Viejo es muy popular y animada, especialmente por ser un excelente lugar para practicar surf y booggie board, tanto para expertos como para principiantes, en el punto conocido como Beach Break. Frente a este lugar hay una pequeña isla rocosa que sirve como refugio a numerosas aves que al atardecer se dirigen allí a pernoctar, y donde según cuentan las leyendas se enterró un tesoro pirata.

oth these beaches have been awarded the Ecological Blue Flag. They are amongst the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and all of Costa Rica, with their white or golden sands, turquoise water hiding delicate coral reefs teeming with life. This ecosystem provides food and shelter for corals, sponges, anemones, exotic tropical fish, turtles, white fin sharks, barracudas and rays. These sometimes solitary beaches are excellent for walks due to their fine sands, as well as sunbathing, enjoying long refreshing swims, watching the surprising underwater world, or exercising beach sports. Playa Chiquita is formed by a string of small beaches, surrounded by corals plaques that emerged from the sea due to the 1991 earthquake, thus forming pools of unique beauty. Punta Uva is made up of two beaches sepparated by a rocky point which can be climbed on a trail that takes you to the topmost point, with a panoramic view of the coast. On the southern side of this rock is a beach known as Arrecife and the point, behind of which lies Playa Grande, spreading into Manzanillo. Behind these beaches lies a tropical forest, which is primary in some sections, perfect for trecking and birdwathcing or practising yoga and other relaxation techniques that will connect you with Nature.

Playa Chiquita está formada por una sucesión de pequeñas playas rodeadas de placas de coral que emergieron como efecto del terremoto en el año 1.991, formando pozas de especial belleza. Punta Uva consta de dos playas separadas por un saliente rocoso al que se puede subir por un sendero que lleva hasta la punta del mismo con una vista panorámica sobre la costa. Al lado Sur de esta roca se encuentra la playa conocida como Arrecife y la punta, detrás de la cual está playa Grande que llega hasta Manzanillo. A espaldas de estas playas se encuentra el bosque tropical, en algunos sectores primario, perfecto para practicar senderismo y la observación de aves o la práctica de yoga y otras técnicas de relajación en contacto con la Naturaleza.

Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre • National Wildlife Refuge

l Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo está situado en el Caribe Sur, su litoral abarca desde Playa Cocles hasta el río Sixaola, frontera con Panamá, fue creado en 1985 y protege 5.013 ha. terrestres y 4.436 ha. marinas. La parte terrestre la conforman colinas de Bosque Tropical Húmedo, con árboles como el cativo, el almendro de montaña y la caobilla. Los bosques de planicie aluviales se caracterizan por la presencia de especies como el yolillo, el sangrillo y varias especies de mangle. En el interior se encuentra un pantano de 400 ha. donde sobresale la vegetación flotante. La costa está formada por una sucesión de puntas de arrecife emergidas que se elevan hasta 30 m. formando acantilados sobre el mar que encierran pequeñas playas de arenas blancas. La vegetación de playa está formada por cocoteros y uva de playa. Al sur de Punta Mona se encuentra el único bosque de cativos en el Caribe Sur. En el extremo sureste del refugio se encuentra la laguna de Gandoca, donde abundan los bosques anegados y un extenso manglar con especies como el mangle rojo, el blanco y botón. En el mar habitan 3 especies de delfines, el nariz de botella, el pintado y el pequeño tucuxi, el más pequeño del mundo. El arrecife coralino se extiende hasta 200 m. mar adentro, con varias especies de coral, moluscos, 11 especies de esponjas y 37 de algas como el zacate de tortuga que proveen refugio y alimento a la langosta, el manatí y las tortugas marinas, las cuales anidan en las costas del refugio, especialmente la baula que desova entre los meses de Marzo a Junio. Entre las aves destacan los tucanes, el pavón, la amazona frentirroja y el aguilucho. Entre los mamíferos las 3 especies de monos, 2 de perezosos, el jaguarundi y el ocelote. Otras especies son el caimán, la iguana verde, anfibios, nutrias, saínos y tepezcuintes. Se puede acceder al refugio desde Manzanillo y desde Gandoca, ambos cuentan con oficinas del Ministerio de Ambiente donde se puede conseguir información sobre guías naturalistas locales, el teléfono es el 2750-9100.
he National Wildlife Refuge Gandoca Manzanillo is located in the southern Caribbean, its coastline stretches from Playa Cocles up to the River Sixaola, natural border with Panama. It was established in 1985 so as to protect 5013 terrestrial hectares and 4436 marine hectares. The terrestrial area is composed by hills covered with Humid Tropical Forest, with trees such as the cativo, mountain almond and smallleaved mahogany. Floodplain forests are characterized by the presence of species such as yolillo palms, the dragon blood tree and several mangrove species. Inside there is a swamp of 400 ha. where you can appreciate the floating vegetation. The coast is formed by a succession of reef emerging points that rise up to 30 m. forming sea cliffs creating small, white sand beaches. The beach vegetation consists of Coconut Palm trees and Beach Grape trees. South of Punta Mona you find the only cativo forest of the Southern Caribbean. In the Refuge´s southeastern area you find the Gandoca lagoon, abundant in flooded forests and with an extensive mangrove, where you find species such as Red Mangrove, the White and button mangrove. The sea is inhabited by 3 dolphin species, the Bottle Nose, the spotted and the small Tucuxi, being the smallest species in the world. The coral reef extends 200 m. offshore, with several species of coral, molluscs, 11 sponge species, 37 algae species such and as the Turtle Grass that provides shelter and food for lobsters, manatees and sea turtles. The Turtles nest on Refuge´s shores, especially the Leatherback who lays her eggs between the months of March to June. Among the birds we point out the Toucans, the Great Curassow, the red-fronted Parrot, the black and the white hawk-eagle. Among mammals, you find 3 Monkey species, 2 sloth species, the jaguarondi and the Ocelot. Other species you can spot are the Alligator, the Green Iguana, Amphibians, Otters, Peccaries and pacas. You can access the refuge from Manzanillo and from Gandoca, both have offices at the Ministry of Environment where you can get information about local naturalist guides, their phone is 2750-9100.

ortuguero National Park was created in 1975, it is located in the northern Caribbean region of Costa Rica, 80 kilometers north of the city of Limon. It has 31,187 ha. of land and 52.265 marine hectares. It is a swampy flood plain, with small mountains of volcanic origin, which together with the National Wildlife Refuge Barra del Colorado extend along the coast from the River San Juan to the River Parismina, protecting ecosystems, such as canals, lakes, rivers, fluvial islands, forests, swamps and hills. Its climate is very humid and hot as its typical in the very Humid Tropical Forests, it is one of the wettest areas in the Caribbean, with storms of 30 days that lead to floods and collaborate with the permanence of the swamps and lagoons. It doesn´t have a dry season, though has a lower frequency of rainfall in February, March and October. Tortuguero National Park is one of the most biodiverse places in Costa Rica and one of the most complex aquatic ecosystem networks on the planet. You can find over 400 species of trees and about 2,200 plant species, with plenty of vertical strata, in the littoral vegetation you find species such as the beach grape, the hicaco and coconut palm trees. Behind the sandy coastal line the swampy forest grows on flooded lands throughout the year, where is common to find trees like the dragon blood, the cativo, the gavilan, and the golden fruit, some of these measure up to 45 or 50 meters high, so does the yolillo palm (Raphia taedigera) that forms forests. In areas with deeper waters you find the floating vegetation composed mostly of water lily (Eichhornia crassipes) and water ferns.
l Parque Nacional Tortuguero fue creado en 1975, se encuentra ubicado en la región del Caribe Norte costarricense, 80 Kilómetros al norte de la cuidad de Limón, cuenta con 31.187 ha. terrestres y 52.265 ha. marinas. Es una llanura inundada y pantanosa, con pequeñas montañas de origen volcánico, que junto al Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barra del Colorado se extienden a lo largo del litoral desde el río San Juan al río Parismina, protegiendo ecosistemas tales como canales, lagunas, ríos, islas fluviales, bosques, pantanos y colinas. Su clima es muy húmedo y caliente como corresponde a un Bosque Tropical Muy Húmedo, es una de las áreas más lluviosas del Caribe, con temporales de hasta 30 días que dan origen a inundaciones y colaboran a la permanencia de los pantanos y lagunas. No cuenta con una estación seca, aunque existe una menor frecuencia de lluvias en Febrero, Marzo y Octubre. El Parque Nacional Tortuguero es uno de los lugares más biodiversos de Costa Rica y una de las redes de ecosistemas acuáticos más complejos del planeta. En él podemos encontrar más de 400 especies de árboles y alrededor de 2.200 especies de otras plantas, con abundancia de estratos verticales, en la vegetación litoral se encuentran especies como la uva de playa, el hicaco y la palma de coco. Detrás de la franja costera arenosa crece el bosque pantanoso sobre terrenos inundados todo el año, donde es común encontrar árboles como el sangrillo, el cativo, el gavilán y el fruta dorada, algunos de estos llegan a medir hasta 45 o 50 metros de altura, también crece la palma yolillo (Raphia taedigera) que llega a formar bosques. En las zonas con aguas más profundas se desarrolla la vegetación flotante compuesta en su mayoría por el lirio de agua (Eichhornia crassipes) y los helechos acuáticos. 50
El majestuoso Bosque Tropical Muy Húmedo crece en áreas con suelo no inundable, como en Lomas de Sierpe, con altura de hasta 311msnm. Este bosque tiene una extraordinaria diversidad de flora, entre los árboles más característicos podemos observar el pilón, el canfín, el almendro y el jícaro de montaña, otras especies son el cedro macho, el javillo, el alcanfor y la palma suita. Las playas de Tortuguero son el área más importante en el Caribe occidental para el ciclo de vida de las tortugas marinas, cuatro especies arriban a la costa, la gigantesca baula, la tortuga verde, la caguama de color pardo y la tortuga carey, abandonando su medio y saliendo a la playa para cavar un hueco donde depositar sus huevos, tratando así de perpetuar su especie y produciendo un sobrecogedor espectáculo natural. En este área natural encuentran refugio el manatí o vaca marina, caimanes, cocodrilos y el prehistórico pez gaspar. Además es el hábitat de la danta, el jaguar, los monos congo, carablanca y mono araña, el ocelote, el jaguarundi, el perezoso de tres dedos, tepezcuintes, pizotes, mapaches, martillas, nutrias, tolomucos y el murciélago pescador. Entre los anfibios destacan la familia de las Dendrobates y las Agalichnys. El parque alberga más de 400 especies de aves como la lapa verde, el pavón, el zopilote cabezirrojo, el gavilán cangrejero, el trogón violáceo y la oropéndola. Cerca de los ríos y lugares pantanosos se observan cantidad de aves acuáticas, garzas reales, la espátula rosada con pico en forma de espátula, garzas blancas, ibis, la jacana y el cormorán. El parque cuenta con una serie de canales secundarios navegables en lancha o canoa, algunos de gran interés como Caño Palma, un canal de aguas oscuras donde se ubica una estación biológica dedicada a la investigación, Caño Harold o Caño Chiquero . En el pueblo se puede visitar el museo de la tortuga para conocer mas sobre la vida de estos quelonios. El acceso a Tortuguero se realiza por vía acuática desde Moín, Caño Blanco o Cariari, o en avioneta desde San José. El Ministerio de Ambiente cuenta con una oficina en la entrada del Parque Nacional, cuya entrada cuesta 10 dólares. El teléfono en Tortuguero es 2709-8086 y la oficina regional en Guápiles 2710-2929.
The majestic Very Humid Tropical grows in areas with flooded soil, such as Lomas de Sierpe, with heights up to 311msnm. This forest has an extraordinary diversity of flora, among the most characteristic trees we can see the pylon, the canfín, almond and mountain gourd, other species are the Male Cedar, Sandbox tree, camphor and Suita Palm. Tortuguero beaches are the most important in the western Caribbean area for the life cycle of sea turtles, four species arrive at the coast, the giant leatherback, the green turtle, the loggerhead and hawksbill turtles. They abandon their natural environment and come to the beach to dig a hole in which to lay their eggs, thus trying to perpetuate their species. It is breath taking natural spectacle. In this natural area you find manatees or sea cow, alligators, crocodiles and the prehistoric Gaspar fish. It is also the habitat of the tapir, the jaguar, howler monkeys, white-faced and spider monkeys, ocelots, jaguarondis, the three-toed sloth, pacas, coatis, raccoons, kinkajous, otters, fisherman bats and tayras. Among the amphibians you find the family of the Dendrobates and Agalychnis. The park contains over 400 species of birds like the great green macaw, the peacock, the redhead vulture, common black hawk, the violaceous trogon and oropendola. Near rivers and swampy areas you can observe several aquatic birds such as, royal herons, roseate spoonbills with spatula-shaped beaks, white herons, ibis, cormorant and the jacana. The park has a series of secondary canals, navigable by boat or canoe, some of great interest as Caño Palma, a canal of dark waters where it is located a biological research station, Cano or Caño Chiquero or Caño Harold. In town you can visit the turtle museum so as to learn more about these turtles lives. You can access Tortuguero by water from Moin, Caño Blanco or Cariari, or by flight from San Jose.
