Welcome to Women’s Healthcare The recent £6.8 million refurbishment of the Hanover Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (winner of the Building Better Healthcare Award 2013), at Leigh Infirmary has seen a radical transformation of Gynaecology services. The new Women’s Healthcare Unit, within the Hanover, is now able to provide a comprehensive range of services for women including General Gynaecology, Urodynamics, Hysteroscopy and Colposcopy clinics. The Unit brings all outpatient clinics together to offer a calm and relaxing ambience for our patients in a single location. General Gynaecology outpatient and specialist clinics are provided side-by-side, with Gynaecology ultrasound facilities also available allowing immediate access to specialist scans. Our philosophy is to offer ‘one-stop’ appointments whenever possible to ensure all diagnostic tests are carried out during a single visit. We provide a patient-focused experience which maintains the highest standards of comfort, safety and quality while safeguarding patient privacy and dignity. Menstrual Disorders Clinic Menstrual Disorders Clinics (MDC) run on most days and have a range of morning and afternoon sessions. They provide a one-stop facility for assessment, diagnosis and treatment for women with bleeding problems, both pre and postmenopausal. Investigations include visual assessment of the cervix, ultrasound scanning and outpatient hysteroscopy. If required, endometrial biopsies/samples can be taken and sent for histological assessment. Also blood tests can be performed and sent to the laboratory to complete the assessment. Treatments offered include removal of endometrial polyps, endometrial ablation, insertion of mirena coils and essure hysteroscopic sterilization. Offering these treatments as an outpatient reduces the need for some women to have a general anesthetic in theatre. Suspected cancer patients are usually seen within a week.

Colposcopy Clinic Our dedicated colposcopy clinics are run by consultants and specialist nurses. We welcome direct referrals from the laboratory, as well as GPs. Patients are referred to these clinics when smear tests indicate abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, an inflamed cervix, or difficulty obtaining adequate smear samples. Patients are seen in one of the following clinics: • Referral/new appointment Smears are taken if required followed by a colposcopy examination when tests are taken to confirm a diagnosis and evaluate whether the patient may need a small treatment of the cervix. Cervical biopsies may be taken and sent to histology at this appointment. • See and treat appointment One-stop clinic offering initial examination and treatment on the same day, if appropriate. Treatments include LLETZ and cryocautery. • Nurse-led smear clinics Women at low risk of developing cervical cancer but who cannot be discharged to their own GP can have their smears performed by our specially trained nursing staff. • Post-treatment clinic Women are seen for a follow up after receiving treatment for pre-cancer of the cervix.

Urogynaecology A comprehensive Urogynaecology service to treat prolapse and bladder problems is offered within the Women’s Healthcare Unit and we aim to offer a one-stop service wherever possible. Patients can be referred to designated Urogynaecology slots in Gynaecology or Bladder Assessment Clinics. We are also happy to consider written referrals requesting Urodynamic appointments for patients who have already tried conservative treatments for continence problems. The Bladder Assessment Clinics welcome patients referred with symptoms such as incontinence, frequent urination, sudden urge to pass urine, painful urination or problems emptying the bladder. Our award winning team work with the community Continence Advisory Service and physiotherapy means that patients who do not require surgical treatments can be followed up and treated outside of hospital or by a physiotherapist. The new Unit has a dedicated Urogynaecology Suite with facilities for Urodynamics, bladder scanning and outpatient cystoscopy which can often be provided on the first visit. Urethral bulking to treat stress incontinence is offered as an outpatient and outpatient Botox is now available within Urogynaecology as well as Urology. A full range of continence and prolapse surgery is provided. Vaginal tapes (TVT and TVT-O) and vaginal repairs are carried out as day case surgery at Leigh Infirmary but patients requiring vaginal hysterectomy or surgery to support the vaginal vault will require overnight admission at Wigan Infirmary. We offer joint pelvic floor clinics with Miss Naomi McKenzie, Colorectal Surgeon, in which patients with combined bladder and bowel problems are assessed and combined surgical procedures are arranged if required. We are currently working to be among the first units in the UK to achieve British Society of Urogynaecology accreditation.
