African American Heritage Tour This tour was developed by New River Gorge National River and its partners to highlight and remember the rich African American history of southern West Virginia. The tour takes you to 17 historic sites in Summers, Raleigh, Fayette and Nicholas counties. At each site, a narrator will interpret the lifeways and experiences of black coal miners, railroad workers, and community members that helped shape the history of this region. Total run time of the tour is between 10 and 12 hours. You may wish to explore the route over several days. Below are a few tips to make your trip run smoothly. • The tour is on two CDs: Disc 1 includes stops in Fayette and Nicholas counties, Disc 2 includes stops in Raleigh and Summers counties. • Directions from one tour stop to the next are found on pages 2 – 18. • Pause the CD while you drive between tour stops and start it again when you arrive at the next stop. • At each stop, you are welcome to walk around, take pictures and read the wayside exhibit. • Many of the tour stops are privately owned, so please tread lightly and respect the owner’s property. To get started, place a CD into your player and turn to page 2 (for Disc 1) or page 13 (for Disc 2) for directions to the tour stop.

** The African American Heritage Tour is also available as an interactive app for mobile devices. Go to nps.gov/neri to download the app on your smartphone. 1
