Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences ATP-mediated (purinergic) neurotransmission in the mammalian retina We are studying the function of ATP-mediated neurotransmission in the establishment and maintenance of retinal circuits during development and its involvement in retinal diseases. To this end, we use gene delivery in combination with imaging to follow circuit development. In addition, we use electrophysiological methods to determine the contribution of purinergic receptors to retinal function.

Rosenfeld, MD, PhD Saturday, September 12, 2009 Distinguished Alumnus: Joel Sugar, MD Invited Speaker: James C. Tsai, MD, FACS About our Distinguished Alumnus. . . Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Joel Sugar has been selected to receive the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Joel has a long association with the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine where he completed his ophthalmology residency. After doing his fellowship in Cornea and External Disease with Dr. Herbert E. Kaufman at the University of Florida, he returned to Washington University for a fellowship with Dr. Bernard Becker and then took the helm of Chief Resident. Following his year as Chief Resident, he went to the University of Illinois at Chicago to head their Cornea Service where he has carved out a stellar career as an ophthalmologist and cornea specialist, as well as deservedly earning an international reputation for being an outstanding teacher. As a clinician scientist, Joel has been at the forefront of research on herpetic eye disease. He has published hundreds of articles in peer-reviewed journals, has served on the editorial boards and as a reviewer for the top ophthalmology journals. Joel has always been an outstanding citizen of and contributor to ophthalmology. It is a great pleasure for us to add to his many accolades by making him the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus.

From the Chairman, Michael A. Kass, MD Hello Alumni and Friends, It is a great pleasure to greet my fellow alums. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences had an outstanding year. We continue to attract talented faculty, residents and fellows. In this newsletter, we highlight the new additions to the Department, as well as the next career stop for residents and fellows completing training. A highlight of this year’s Academy meeting will be the recognition of Bernard Becker as the 2009 American Academy of Ophthalmology Laureate. The Laureate Award is the highest honor given by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is presented to Bernard Becker for his distinguished career and contributions to ophthalmology. The presentation to Dr. Becker will be on October 25, 2009, at this year ’s joint meeting with the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology in San Francisco. An additional highlight of the annual AAO meeting will be the presentation of the Lorenz Zimmerman Lecture by Morton Smith, M.D. Dr. Smith’s lecture entitled “Ophthalmic Pathology: Past, Present, and Future“, will be given Monday, Oct. 26 at 8:30 am. I hope that many of you will attend the annual meeting. One of the highlights of the annual meeting every year is the Washington University reception.
