The Crafts Center - Summer 2016 Schedule

The Crafts Center is funded primarily by NC State student fees and community participation. The programs and facilities are open to everyone with the following qualifications: participants must be age 18 or older, or a current NC State student, and have health insurance. STUDIO USE

Studio passes are available to those not taking a class provided they have sufficient experience and knowledge to work independently in the studio; first time users must complete an orientation before purchasing a studio pass. ART-ON-PAPER

For beginners only. An excellent class for those who have never painted. Learn about composition, value, materialism, space, volume, techniques, and color. Students will work from still life to learn skills and then have the opportunity to paint their desired subjects. Students are responsible for providing their own supplies and will receive a supply list upon registration. (Expect to pay $40-$100 for supplies, depending on the items & brands you choose to purchase.) Monday evenings for 5 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, May 16 – June 20 (skip May 30)

WATERCOLOR I – BASIC WATERCOLOR

Class fee Instructor: Laura Azzi I = $25 For beginners only. Students will be taught the basics, from brush strokes to color II = $45 mixing to applying water media paint. Color theory and composition will be covered. III = $50 Come and express your creative self through watercolor for relaxation and enjoyment. Students are responsible for providing their own supplies and will receive a supply list upon registration. (Expect to pay $35-$45 for supplies at a local art supply store.) WATERCOLOR SUNFLOWERS

Instructor: Laura Azzi No experience necessary. With their imposing height and large, bold leaves and flower heads, sunflowers are wonderful painting subjects. Come join this workshop and learn to paint the dramatic, Great Plains native: the sunflower! Class fee includes all supplies needed for use during class. Saturday, July 16, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Instructor: Bob Bendelow A beginning level class. Release the color and hidden light from within a precious gemstone! Participants in this class will learn to cut facets in crystals and gemstones, turning them into works of art. Students will begin by working with crystal quartz and then move on to fine gemstones. Stones, use of laps and other supplies for use during class are included in the class fee. Thursday evenings for 6 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, May 26 – June 30

Class fee Instructor: Gary Knight I = $30 Rich in visual texture, the urban landscape is perfectly suited for exploring new techniques in digital photography. This class will begin with a Thursday evening II = $53 in-class session aimed at the equipment and technique used in making quality III = $59 B & W conversions, how to use HDR for getting more out of your images, and when to use infrared for creating dramatic special effects. Then, early on Saturday morning, while light and shadow are at their best, the class will meet downtown to put their newfound skills to work. We will gather for lunch at a local diner and talk shop before heading back out to shoot some more. A display of your best images will be shared on the Crafts Center’s Flickr site! BEGINNING GUITAR

Instructor: Naomi Profesorsky Learn a new way to weave in this two week class, suitable for beginners to advanced beaders. We’ll start off using two-hole glass beads to create a stunning colorful bracelet. And then in the second week, we’ll learn a beaded earring pattern designed to match the bracelet. The class fee includes beads and all supplies used during class. Thursday evenings for 2 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, July 14 – 21

Instructor: Kirk Adam Class fee Would you like to learn to play the guitar? For both electric and acoustic guitar, I = $14 students in this introductory class will build the basic foundation of chords and II = $25 rhythm needed to play their favorite songs. No prior knowledge of music is required! III = $28 (The Crafts Center has three electric guitars for use during class by the first three students registered who do not have their own instrument.) Repeat students welcome. Monday evenings for 5 weeks, 5:00 - 6:00 pm, May 16 – June 20 (skip May 30) Class fee BIKE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE For NC State students, employees & Centennial Affiliates only - a Bike Repair I = $17 Facility in support of the WolfWheels Program! Say goodbye to expensive bike II = $30 repairs and learn to properly maintain your own bike. (Participating NC State students will receive access to our repair facility for their entire college career and participating employees and Centennial Affiliates receive access for their entire term of employment at the University!) Whether you are a competitive racer or just a casual rider, this class will provide you with the necessary skills to replace/repair flats, lubricate drive-trains, tune brakes and derailleurs, true wheels, and much more. An introductory darkroom class. Capture light and motion on film using SLR cameras. Bring your own camera or use a Crafts Center loaner. Students will process their exposed film and spend the remainder of this class camped out in the dark room exploring the traditional B & W printing process. Class fee includes film, photographic paper and other supplies used during class. Monday evenings for 4 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, June 6 -27

Instructor: Alicia Moya-Mendez Class fee Science meets art! This 3-hour workshop covers basic information on the solar system I = $9 (planets, moons, star types, location) and a solar eclipse (types, duration, occurrence, II = $15 location dependence). To better understand the lesson, students will make one solar III = $17 system pendant and one solar eclipse pendant using copper wire and stone & glass beads. Students will leave with two pendants, a written tutorial for both, a lecture packet on both with photos, and will have had a short, basic astronomy lesson A materials fee of $7 is payable to the instructor at start of class. This workshop does not include a studio pass. Monday evening, June 27, 6:30 - 9:30 pm Class fee CHAINS! CHAINS! CHAINS! I = $60 Instructor: Sarah Tector II = $80 For all skill levels. Working with a mix of wire sizes, each week you'll form, solder and finish a different style chain and clasp: eye-hook, oval link and modified ladder. Come explore technique and III = $85 design, gain experience in repetitive production, and build confidence in point and small-joint soldering! All sterling and fine silver is included in the class fee; acetylene torches and wire solder will be used to make connections. Tuesday evenings for 3 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, July 12 -26

II = $60 From learning the various camera controls to exercising the options of how and when they are best used, students in this nuts and bolts class will gain the III = $67 confidence needed to capture that perfect instant. Learn to use your own SLR camera or use one of our Nikon D3000 loaners in order to get the most out of this series of handson discussions and photo shoots. Bring your own SD card. BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

Class fee Instructor: John Fetvedt I = $22 Suitable for beginners as well as more advanced metalsmiths. Use a hydraulic press to II = $40 form metal for making jewelry. We’ll explore many of the tools and their uses, including embossing, silhouette dies, and bending for synclastic and anticlastic III = $44 bracelets. A $20 materials fee paid to instructor at the end of the workshop will include some copper. Additional copper will be available for purchase from the instructor. Students who wish to work with silver must bring their own silver to the workshop. 20 gauge metal is recommended for bracelets and pendants and 24 gauge metal for earrings. INTRODUCTION TO FACETING

Class fee I = $33 Instructor: Linda Searcy II = $60 Create your own ring made from combined metals and showcasing a focal point gemstone. Learn how to mix metals and use the hydraulic press and pancake dies to cut ring III = $67 blanks and base metal overlays. You’ll also add a faceted gemstone to the fabricated ring. Linda will have metal, gemstones, solder and other materials for use during the class (expect to pay the instructor $25 – $75 for materials and supplies). Wednesday evenings for 4 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, June 8 – 29 Class fee DNA PENDANT & EARRINGS (Workshop) I = $9 Instructor: Alicia Moya-Mendez II = $15 Science meets art! This 3-hour workshop covers DNA and teaches students how to make a DNA pendant and a DNA earring set, both AT/CG specific. Instructor will cover III = $17 the basics of DNA (nucleic acids naming and pairing, shape, mutations, making complementary strands, codons, transcription & translation). Students will leave class with one DNA pendant, one set of DNA earrings, a written tutorial, a lecture packet with photos, and will have had a lesson on DNA. INTRODUCTION TO THE POTTER’S WHEEL

Class fee Instructors: Section A - Charlene Poisel; Section B - Jo Westmoreland I = $72 Would you like to learn how to work on the pottery wheel? This class covers the fundamentals of throwing basic forms: wedging, centering, pulling & shaping walls II = $112 to make cylinder forms, mugs, bowls and vases. You then will learn to trim and glaze III = $122 to create finished pots. Practice time outside of class is strongly suggested to develop throwing skills. Class fee includes one 25# bag of clay and use of studio tools needed during class. INTRODUCTION TO HANDBUILDING

Class fee Instructor: Barbara McKenzie I = $72 An introductory level class - no experience necessary. Begin working with clay by handbuilding a variety of objects such as cups, bowls, plates and vases. This II = $112 class introduces students to many handbuilding techniques, including use of the III = $122 slab roller and extruder, for creating functional and decorative work while preparing them for continuing studio use. Surface decoration and glazing will also be addressed. Class fee includes one 25# bag of clay and use of studio tools needed during class. Instructor: Jennifer Siegel An intermediate level class. Are you a flower fanatic? Register for this class and try your hands at sculpting clay flowers! Finished arrangements of clay flowers can be attached to tiles for wall hanging, lids of pots, shoulders of vases and many more sculptural forms. Clay flowers are very delicate, requiring a soft touch and small tools. Rolling thin slabs and constructing chosen plants and/or flowers piece-by-piece will be the main focus of this course. After taking this class you can starting growing a orever-garden all over your home! Class fee includes one 25# bag of clay and use of studio tools needed for class. Students must bring their own heat gun. Monday evenings for 6 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, May 16 – June 27 (skip May 30) Prerequisites: Introduction to the Potter’s Wheel, Handbuiding 101, or equivalent experience.

OOPS - IT’S BROKEN! (Workshop)

Instructor: Jennifer Siegel Some of the most popular questions asked are “How can I fix this?” or “Why did Class fee I = $9 this happen?” as we look at a broken, cracked or chipped piece of ware. So it’s II = $15 time we all talk about this problem together! Sign up for a short and sweet lesson on how to fix bone dry greenware: a handle, a rim, a spout, a crack in a seam. III = $17 Let’s talk about the importance and strategy of slow drying, safe greenware storage/handling and whether or not something is really worth the fix. Bring your dry, broken pieces and some of the wet clay you made it with to class - we’re gonna fix it! This is not a class for fixing “S” cracks or totally shattered pieces. CLAY BEADS, PENDANTS AND BROOCHES...OH MY!

Class fee Instructors: Jennifer Siegel & Jo Ellen Westmoreland I = $72 An intermediate level class. Using ceramic bead bars for firing in our gas kiln and high temp wire for firing in our raku kiln, this course is perfect for any II = $103 jewelry enthusiast and offers two firing styles for the price of one! Stamped, III = $111 carved, smooth or slipped - it’s your choice, and you’ll get to make many of them. We will spend a few days creating our pieces and then return for glazing, firing and final assembly. Class fee includes one-half bag of porcelain, two bead bars (Cone 10 - yours to keep), raku bead wire & firing baskets, bisque firing, Cone 10 firing, a raku firing session, and jewelry findings for assembling necklaces, brooches, etc. Sundays: May 22, 12:00 - 5:00 pm (making beads); June 5, 1:00 - 3:00 pm (glazing); June 12, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (raku firing); and June 19, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm (assembling); (skip May 29) Prerequisites: Introductory handbuilding, potter’s wheel class, or other equivalent class or experience.

WEAVING ON A FLOOR LOOM

Instructor: Shelly King Learn to weave! Wind a warp, dress your loom and weave it off. Beginners to the craft will explore twill patterns and other weaving techniques before completing a woven scarf. For continuing students, it would be helpful to have your project planned before the first class. Class fee includes materials and use of a loom through the end of the semester. Instructor: Natalie Seibel Learn to make your own tapestry weaving from start to finish on a tapestry lap loom. In this introductory class you will learn to warp the loom, use plain weave, create shapes and curves, tie rya knots to create fringe, use a cartoon, and finishing techniques. WOOL QUILLING JEWELRY (Workshop)

Instructor: Roberta Morgan Jazz up your jewelry wardrobe with wool quilling. Make a cuff bracelet, pin and neckpiece using recycled wool strips. This unique jewelry is fun and easy to make and will garner lots of compliments when you wear it. All materials needed are supplied by instructor. This workshop does not include a studio pass. Class fee I = $17 Instructor: Peggy Forster II = $30 Learn to “paint” a landscape with fabric. This is a relaxed, free-form technique; no templates or patterns are required. We will learn key elements of design, then how III = $33 to cut and layer fabric to make your own landscape art quilt. You should be able to complete a landscape with borders and be ready to quilt by the end of the class. Bring your own sewing machine or reserve one of ours. (The Crafts Center has four sewing machines for use during class by the first four students who request to use one.) Students are responsible for providing their own supplies and will receive a supply list upon registration. This workshop does not include a studio pass. Class fee Instructor: Wanda Borrelli I = $39 No experience necessary! Add some color to your wardrobe or make a gift for that II = $70 special friend. In this fun class we will learn different dyeing techniques using III = $78 Procion MX dyes on silk scarves. Exciting patterns will emerge as we experiment with various techniques and color mixing. Colors can range from vibrant to pastels. In addition to immersion dyeing, we will learn shibori techniques and different forms of resist. A $30 materials fee, payable to instructor at first class, includes 6 silk scarves, dyes and all other supplies needed during the workshop. Extra scarves will be available for purchase. Class fee Instructor: Bill Wallace I = $76 Turn wooden bowls and spindles! In this introductory class, students will have the opportunity to explore the very different experiences found in turning the side grain II = $116 of a spindle and the end grain found in making a bowl. PROJECTS IN WOOD

Instructor: Tim Bevacqua Class fee After completing the introductory woodworking class, are you eager to get started on I = $50 your next woodworking project? From a plan and materials of your own choosing, II = $90 discussion on the first night is aimed at getting you going. From there, this class will III = $100 be all hands-on requiring possible time outside of class to complete your project. HOW TO USE WOODSHOP MACHINES AND HANDTOOLS

Instructor: Zach Gregory Class fee Interested in woodworking and have never been exposed to the larger machines, tools I = $70 and processes? Students in this introductory hands-on class will learn the skill sets II = $103 of machine woodworking while constructing a floating top table suitable for use at III = $111 home or in any residence hall room. Class fee includes wood, hardware and use of tools during class. JOINTS IN WOOD

Class fee Instructor: David Trueblood I = $43 For every connection in wood, a joint is carefully chosen and executed in order to maximize function and visual beauty. In this class, students will learn to lay out, cut, II = $70 and fit a variety of joints used in furniture making. Hand-cut joinery rooted in both III = $77 Asian and European cultures will be explored. Emphasis will be on process rather than the completion of a project. MAKING THE LONGBOARD SKATEBOARD DECK

No experience needed. Intensely hands-on! Make a custom-sized longboard skateboard you can ride and enjoy for years. Students will learn to laminate plys of Baltic birch into the necessary complex curves. The form will then be cut with the band saw, drilled, routed and sanded to final shape. By the end of the three classes, you will have a finished longboard deck ready for wheels. The class fee includes plywood, glue and use of all tools to make one board of your own design. Thursday evenings for 3 weeks, 5:00 - 8:00 pm, July 7 – 21

SCROLL SAWING PROJECTS

Instructor: Maria Chang Puzzles, portraiture, and layer-built imagery; all of these can be created out of colorful woods with the help of the scroll saw. Gain confidence in scroll sawing as you work to complete a basic project. Once the machine is mastered, you will explore more advanced techniques, work with more advanced patterns, and even create imagery of your own design. Class fee includes wood and use of tools during class. Monday evenings for 4 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, June 6 – 27

IMAGES AND SCRIPT: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SHOPBOT CNC ROUTER Instructor: Zach Gregory

An introduction to the Crafts Center’s ShopBot router, students will design imagery, Class fee create tool paths and execute basic cuts. CAD (computer-aided design) software will I = $35 be used to develop imagery before setting up the machine to cut and inlay designs II = $55 into matching pockets on contrasting hardwood. Engraving of script and other designs will be explored to embellish wooden plaques. Class fee includes practice III = $60 wood and cutting bits furnished during the class. You must provide your own cuting bits for use outside of class. Tuesday evenings for 3 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, July 12 – 26 Prerequisites: Must be proficient in the arts of digital rendering and related digital creativity.

WOODTURNING RODEO

Class fee Instructor: George Thomas I = $43 Learn to spin wood in this rapid-fire intensively hands-on introduction to the lathe and II = $65 all of the many shapes that it can make. Emphasis will be on experiencing makingIII = $71 concepts rather than in making the perfect form. On Friday we’ll turn a small bowl and matching chopsticks. On Saturday, expect a fast paced day of making a goblet, lidded box and maybe even a spinning top or two! Class fee includes all wood and tools for use in this class. INTRODUCTION TO STAINED GLASS

Class fee Instructor: Deborah Rodgers I = $78 Add color to your world! Learn to cut, foil and solder flat glass using the Tiffany copper foil method while making a simple sun catcher. Students in this beginning II = $118 level class will also create an 8”x11” panel using a pattern of their choice. III = $128 Class fee includes glass and materials used to make the suncatcher and the panel. Wednesday evenings for 6 weeks, 6:30 - 9:30 pm, May 17 – June 28 (skip May 31)

FUN WITH MULTI-COLORED TWISTY STRINGERS

Instructor: Kathy Driggers Class fee An intermediate level class. Want to take your lampworking techniques to the next I = $62 level? Then this is the class for you! Learn to make multi colored twisty stringers II = $93 and, using good heat control, manipulate the twisted stringer to produce a beautiful bead. Basic lampworking skills are required. The class fee includes III = $101 glass rods and fuel for use during class. Saturday & Sunday, June 4 & 5, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Prerequisites: Students must have completed the Lampworking 101 or Decorative Glass Bead Making class or be proficient in the basics of lampwork.

CONTROLLED FLUIDITY: AN INTERMEDIATE FUSING CLASS

Class fee Instructor: Danene Groenke I = $55 An intermediate level class full of new techniques! Construct small dichroic II = $82 pattern bars to be sliced by saw for use in a pendant or earrings. Choosing from several III = $144 patterns, work through Sunday morning cutting, foiling and soldering glass to construct a container that suits your personal space and fancy. Sunday afternoon will be spent with hands in dirt, planting and filling your little habitat with greenery.
