Acknowledgements Our heartiest thanks go to the communities of Takpo, Nanville, Mantari and Zupiri in Nadowli District who contributed hugely by sharing their knowledge and experience. The communities’ practical information has helped the researchers to undertake an in-depth research to understand rainfall variability and other environmental trends and their implication on their livelihoods, their food security and their mobility. We greatly acknowledge the contribution of Koko Warner, Scientific Director, and Tamer Afifi, Research Director, both from the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), and Kevin Henry, Project Coordinator for CARE International, for their insightful comments and editing of the research methodology and the research report. Grace Alenoma, Ernest Bagson, Samuel Bonye, Nicholas Fielmua, Darius Mwingyine, Ophelia Soliku (all University of Development Studies, Wa) and Albert Dakyie took part in this case study and contributed greatly to data collection and data entry through their very valuable skills and great dedication. We all benefited from the efficiency of logistical support and cooperation in the organization of the case study from Issifu Adama, Abdul-Wahab Musah, David Sumbo and Zita Adumpo from the CARE country offices in Wa and Tamale. We have also benefited from the very fruitful exchange of ideas with other researchers in this project, particularly Kees van der Geest, Patrick Sakdapolrak, Benjamin Etzold and Andrea Milan. We would like to thank Magesh Nagarajan (formerly UNU-EHS) for his guidance on data cleaning and statistical analysis. Thanks go to other current and former CARE colleagues, including Charles Ehrhart for his work in the preparatory and early phases of this project, Delphine Pinault for her input and comments on

the research protocol and Aurélie Ceinos for administrative support. Sincere thanks go to the CARE and PECCN (CARE International’s Poverty, Environment and Climate Change Network) colleagues for their insightful comments, in particular Agnes Oetzelsberger, who read through the draft report and provided valuable comments. A special thank goes to to Dr. Felix Asante, Dr. Isaac Agymang, Dr. Ousman Kanton, Professor Stephen B. Kendie, Dr. Irit Eguavoen, Dr. Benjamin Schraven and Dr. Patrick Laux for their review of the final draft report. Their insightful and critical comments have made the report more concise and readerfriendly. Dr. Benjamin Schraven, Dr. Patrick Laux and Dr. Oliver Schulz proved particularly valuable in times of data analysis. Dr. Kees van der Geest gave very valuable comments on the draft report. Many thanks also to Verena Rossow (student assistant at UNU-EHS), Stephanie Andrej, Sophie Zielcke, Katharina Bohnenberger and Sujit Sikder (interns at UNU-EHS), who were involved in literature reviews, data cleaning, making of graphs and tables and the final editing of the report. We are grateful to the UNU-EHS communications team, namely Alice Fišer, Andrea Wendeler and Katharina Brach for their valuable work in publishing the case study reports. We greatly appreciate and acknowledge the generous support of the AXA Group and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for the “Where the Rain Falls” project. Last but not least, we would like to thank Ms. Kimberly Bennett (CARE “Where the Rain Falls” communications coordinator) for editing this report.
