Was it a fluke? Admittedly, we did not have our best football season this past year. Recently, our supporters have come to expect better… and we have too. The perception, and the expectations for our football program, is higher than at any time in our history. And because of that, when we fall short, that disappointment leads to speculation, “home-spun” remedies, some inevitable Monday-morning quarterbacking and the kind of quick fix solutions that come when your view is from the fifty (50) yard line -- albeit from the stands and not the sideline. For some, 2011 seems like a long time ago. But to be frank, the view I have dating back to 2000 when I first arrived is not as myopic. The challenges found then are not even remotely close to what we need to address this off season. But let me assure you, just like thirteen (13) years ago, they will be corrected. In a way, this season kind of reminds me of the father who after a long day at work is relaxing in his chair and trying to read his favorite magazine. (To be more contemporary, I should say his IPad). Anyway, as he is sitting there he finds himself being constantly interrupted by his precocious little daughter who is trying her best to get his attention. A little frustrated by the disruptions, he decides to tear up a page out of the magazine that he is reading which has a map of the world on it. He proceeds to rip it into smaller pieces and then gives it to his daughter, and in the attempt to divert her attention, tells her to put it back together and show him the completed work. His hope is that her occupation with the “project” will take some time and he will get back to enjoying
his magazine. But surprisingly, she is back in a few minutes with the map fully re-configured. The father, in part proud because of her quick work but also inquisitive as to how the task could be accomplished so quickly, questions how she did it. Daddy it was easy. I just turned the pieces of paper over and discovered on the other side there was a face. I just put the face together…it was much easier. He just smiled. Wayne State football’s face today is good – actually very good. You just have to be looking at the correct side. And know the difference. In 2000, we were the like that world map with many missing pieces and imperfections. It was a face that needed some cosmetic surgery. That has changed. When you look at the “other side” today, the actual foundation of the program, you see many optimistic signs. We have the best strength and conditioning program in the Conference – probably a lot of conferences. Our academic support services are exceptional and our game operations are first class. And the fan atmosphere and all the accompanying accouterments on game day are singular and create an enjoyable college atmosphere for Saturday football. Our training staff and medical personnel are qualified, attentive and professional. And I should probably mention we have a proven, exceptional head coach who is student-focused (did I mention he was also the national coach of the year two years ago?). And most importantly, we are still a Carnegie I Research institution in the vibrant midtown of Detroit. That, and a whole lot more, is what makes this “face” so different than the one I looked at 13 years ago. That is why the reversal will be quick…and without major re-construction. Today I see the face of WSU football much like the little girl who was anxious to impress her father. We are ready to do the same for our fans next season. And we know that will put a smile on everyone’s face.

stadium.” Harwell Field will provide grandstands, press box, team clubhouse and a foyer to recognize the achievements and contributions of the Harwell’s. The current field has many historical baseball remnants significant to Mr. Harwell, including a replica Fenway Park outfield wall, the old Tiger stadium scoreboard and the new stadium will be located adjacent to Brooklyn Street which also happened to be one of Ernie’s early professional broadcasting stops with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The project will have the amenities of today with a nostalgic acknowledgment of the past in a stadium that will mirror the facade of Ebbets Field. Men’s basketball at WSU is 1-0 overall after beginning the 2013-14 regular season with a convincing 93-73 victory over visiting Wilberforce University last weekend. Leaders on the floor for coach David Greer are senior guard Chene Phillips (Detroit Renaissance High), sophomore guard Gavin Toma (Southfield Christian), senior guard Deon Dismuke (Detroit Pershing), senior forward Bryan Coleman (Southfield Lathrup), senior center Michael Martin (West Bloomfield) and sophomore forward Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor Huron). Against Wilberforce, Dismuke set careerhighs in points (13), field goals made (6) and assists (7) in playing one minute shy of his career high of 30 set two years against Northwood. Lewis set careerbests in points (12) and rebounds (6). Media members picked Wayne State to finish first in the GLIAC North Division this season. The Warriors will be idle for the next several days resuming nonconference play at Lewis University on Saturday, November 30.
Women’s basketball at Wayne State also is 1-0 overall as they began with a 77-62 victory over visiting California Univ. of Pa. (CUP) Sunday at Matthaei Fieldhouse. The ladies, under coach Carrie Lohr, are led by junior center Shareta Brown (Grand Blanc), junior forward Kayla Bridges (Canton), junior guard Jackie Jones (Detroit Martin Luther King), senior guard Lena Thomas (Bloomfield Hills Andover) and sophomore guards Brittany Streetman (Warren Lincoln), Kristen Long (Durand) and Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Goodrich) who had a game-high 17 points versus CUP.
Newly appointed Los Angeles Angels hitting coach Don Baylor has been added to the lineup and will assist both Trammell and Parrish during both sessions. The Trammell/Parrish Camp will feature the Alan Trammell Premier Infield Camp 9:30 a.m.-noon. and the Lance Parrish Premier Catching Camp 1:30-4 p.m. The camps will be held at the Matthaei Athletic Building and the Multipurpose Indoor Facility. Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team after a fall season in which she performed well at the top flights in both singles and doubles. Moore went 17-4 overall and 12-2 in conference match play, all from the No. 1 singles position. She also had a record of 11-2 during league doubles matches, and finished with an 18-4 record overall in doubles this fall. Moore has been an All-GLIAC performer in all three years with the Warriors, earning First Team recognition as a sophomore and Second Team honors as a freshman.

Briand (Repentigny, Que.) was named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team following a season in which she finished undefeated in conference singles competition for the second straight season. She is a three-time All-GLIAC performer. Briand went undefeated in conference singles matches for the second straight season, finishing 14-0 across No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. She played at the top flight in doubles with Moore, earning an 11-1 record during the conference season. Overall this fall, Briand finished with records of 18-3 in doubles and 19-1 in singles.
Wayne State finished second in the GLIAC regular-season standings, finishing 13-1 in conference matches for the second straight season. The Warriors had a 14-match Briand and Moore teamed up to reach the A Doubles finals of the USTA/ITA Midwest win streak during the regular season and through the first two matches of the GLIAC Regional Tournament, held in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sept. 27-29. The junior pair won four straight doubles matches to reach the championship match, losing to Lewis University’s Tournament. Zsofia Kranczicki and Zsofia Lanstiak in the finals, 8-6. STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE YEAR Wayne State University Director of Athletics Rob Fournier has announced the 2012-13 Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year. Candidates were judged on academic distinction, athletic accomplishments, individual involvement and University and community service, as well as coaches’ recommendation.
Larkin had an outstanding senior season being selected to the NABC All-Midwest Region Second Team after being voted to the All-GLIAC First Team. A CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict First Team honoree, Larkin also earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honors for the third consecutive year. A business/management major, Larkin was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) six times with one 4.00 term, while also being named to the Coach’s Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) the other two semesters. A two-time CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict selection as well as a 2012 GLIAC Commissioner’s Award recipient, Larkin became only the third player in 95 years of WSU basketball to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocked shots. He scored in double figures 50 times and had 10 games of at least 20 points and concluded his collegiate career ranked 17th in all-time scoring at WSU with 1,022 points.

Senior basketball player Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and senior diver Carly Sevald (Royal Oak, Mich./Mercy) were selected as the 2012-13 male and female student-athletes of the year after being nominated by their respective coaches with voting by the athletic department’s coaches and administrative staff. “In a year of many outstanding achievements in competition and in the classroom, Carly and Ian are fitting representatives of those successes,” said Fournier. “Both excelled in statistical records evidenced by Carly’s national championship during her enrollment and Ian’s success in advancing our basketball team to the NCAA post-season two of the last three years. But what should not be overlooked is their leadership and example in creating an environment for future successes and for others to emulate.”
Sevald was an eight-time All-American during her Warrior career, the most possible by a diver, earning seven First Team All-America accolades (top eight on a board) while also becoming the second women’s diving national champion in program history, winning the 2012 three-meter competition with a score of 503.40.
The 2003-04 student-athletes of the year were women’s hockey player Kim Spaulding and swimmer David Lutz. Lutz became the first two-time winner in 2004-05 along with Anna Vinnikov, a member of the women’s fencing squad. The 2005-06 recipients were diver Erika Barczak and swimmer Nick Ingrao, while the 2006-07 recipients were Anna Garina, a national champion fencer, and Kris Krzyminski, an All-American basketball player. All-American baseball pitcher Anthony Bass and Barczak were selected following the 2007-08 school year, with swimmers Ashley St. Andrew and Sean Smith being voted for the 2008-09 season. Softball pitcher Casey Hanes and swimmer Cauli Bedran were the 2009-10 recipients, while baseball catcher Mike Wiseman and tennis student-athlete Sharon Gill were honored following the 2010-11 school year. A pair of All-Americans, swimmer Catherine Leix and football running back Josh Renel, were selected as the 2011-12 Student-Athletes of the Year. Leix helped lead the swimmers to a national title, while Renel’s play helped the football team participate in the national championship game.
A 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-American honoree, Sevald was twice named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence team after receiving GLIAC All-Academic recognition for 2010-11. The early childhood (elementary) education major was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) five times including three terms with 4.00 semester GPA. She also earned Coach’s Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) her other three semesters. This is the 12th year of the WSU StudentAthlete of the Year award. The first recipients were softball player Kelly Kashmerick and hockey player David Guerrera, while cross country runner Shelly Vickery and hockey player Dustin Kingston were the 2002-03 honorees. The first four honorees have since been inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

BASKETBALL PREVIEWS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OUTLOOK -- Following a season that was full of program firsts, team and individual accolades, the Wayne State University women’s basketball program will look to sustain its momentum in 2013-14. Last season, the Warriors went 22-9 overall and 17-5 in GLIAC play while winning a share of the GLIAC North Division title. The 22 wins were one shy of the program record achieved in 1980-81 while the 17 conference wins were the most all-time.

The Green & Gold qualified for its second NCAA Tournament and collected the program’s first two tournament victories while advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. WSU fell to the eventual national champions, GLIAC foe Ashland, to bring the historic season to a close. The Warriors will have to replace seven letterwinners including three All-GLIAC performers. Brittany Streetman, Imari Redfield, Kristen Long, Lena Thomas and Kayla Bridges will be the group of returners. However Coach Carrie Lohr, who was named GLIAC and BCAM Coach of the Year, and her staff had a busy offseason adding nine fresh faces to the roster including five transfers, four of those from Division I programs. Two of those transfers will come down the John C. Lodge Freeway about 10 miles from Detroit Mercy. Shareta Brown, a 6-1 junior, scored in doublefigures in 62 of her 68 games for the Titans. She led U of D in scoring (21.0 PPG), rebounding (9.3 RPG), field-goal percentage (59.2 %) and steals (41) two years ago. Brown scored 28 points (11for-12) and pulled down 14 rebounds in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Championship game victory against McNeese State. She was an All-Horizon League selection and an Honorable Mention All-American by FullCourt.com. Brown along with her Titan teammate, sophomore Destiny Lavita-Stephens, who averaged 3.2 points

and 1.0 rebound per game in her 33 contests have joined the fold. Jackie Jones will look to help the Warrior backcourt after spending two seasons at Chicago State. Jones, a 5-4 junior, averaged 8.0 points, 4.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds last season for the Cougars. WSU will play three exhibitions in 2013-14. The Warriors will play at Michigan on Nov. 1, at Eastern Michigan on Nov. 5 and at home against Lawrence Tech on Nov. 9 before officially beginning the campaign on Nov. 17 in Detroit against California (Pa.). Other non-conference highlights include a trip to Indianapolis on Nov. 30 and the Bellarmine Holiday Classic where WSU will meet GLVC members Bellarmine and Southern Indiana. In total, 12 of the Warriors’ 26 regular seasons contests will be played inside the Matthaei where they went 12-3 a season ago. MEN’S BASKETBALL OUTLOOK -The Wayne State University men’s basketball team enters the 2013-14 season with high hopes following a share of the 2012-13 GLIAC Regular Season title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Head coach David Greer’s squad returns 10 letterwinners of which there are seven seniors including three starters from a squad that finished 17-10 last season. Greer enters his 13th season as head coach having directed the Warriors to a 184-148 record in his 12 seasons. He is the fourthlongest tenured coach in Wayne State men’s basketball history. Returning on Greer’s bench are longtime assistant coaches E.J. Haralson (11th season) and Lorenzo Neely (10th season), as well as graduate assistant Bryan Smothers. Five of top seven scorers return for the Warriors, including 2012-13 leading scorer and redshirt senior Mike Hollingsworth. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Utica led the Warriors with a 14.6 points per game average last season and was twice named GLIAC Player of the Week. He shot 49.4 percent from the floor and was third on the team in assists with 53 along with being voted to the All-GLIAC First Team. Returning in the backcourt alongside Hollingsworth is senior guard Chene Phillips, who was fourth on the Warriors averaging 11.5 points per game in 2012-13. A 6-foot-2 transfer after his sophomore season from Liberty University, Phillips started all 27 games for Wayne State last season and was first on the team in steals (45) and second on the squad in assists (94). Phillips, who graduated from Detroit Renaissance High School, also went to the charity stripe with great frequency, sinking 114 free throws last season. New to the squad in 2013-14 is Clark Bishop,

a freshman guard from Detroit Renaissance. Bishop was a three-time All-Detroit Public League selection, who averaged 22.3 points per game as a senior and finished his prep career with 1,175 points. He was also named to the BCAM Class A Special Mention Team as a senior and was named as one of the top 35 players by the Detroit Free Press’ Mick McCabe prior to his junior season. The Warriors begin the season with an exhibition contest at the University of Michigan on Monday, Nov. 4. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. WSU starts the regular season with two nonconference games, hosting Wilberforce on Nov. 14 and playing at Lewis on Nov. 30. Wayne State commences the conference slate on Dec. 5 with a home matchup against Tiffin. Three games will be broadcast on Comcast Channel 900 in 2013-14, with home dates against Tiffin (Dec. 5), Michigan Tech (Jan. 23) and Northwood (Feb. 6) being shown throughout the state.

RECENT ALUMNI EVENTS This fall many WSU sport programs celebrated their history with alumni reunions that brought hundreds of former student-athletes back to campus. September 7th Men’s and women’s tennis alums gathered to play a few matches with the current teams in the new multipurpose indoor facility and enjoyed a meal with the teams. After lunch the alums shared both humorous and sentimental stories from their time as studentathletes at WSU. September 14th The baseball program hosted its annual alumni Team Ty Stevenson won the 2013 WSU Baseball Alumni Game weekend that was attended by over 100 alumni and included a round of golf at Northville Hills Golf Club, a football game tailgate and alumni game. September 21st Softball also hosted it’s annual alumni game this fall with the current team defeating the alums. Afterwards players and their families enjoyed a picnic on the field catered by their own WSU softball team and coaches.

October 11th Swimming and diving teams started their seasons this year with the annual alumni meet, almost 40 alumni competed. The 2012-13 conference champion swimming and diving teams were also honored prior to the meet at a ceremony where they were awarded their championship rings. October 19th The women’s basketball alumni played the current team in an alumni game showdown on the Matthaei gym floor. Afterwards the ladies headed outdoors to enjoy a Warrior football game in the W Tent.

SWIMMING & DIVING POISED FOR MORE HARDWARE
Following a season in which the Wayne State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished in the top five at the NCAA Championships and each earned conference titles, expectations are again high for the 2013-14 season. Senior, Kayla Scott, was a five-time All-American last season.
The Warriors swept the GLIAC titles for the third straight year in 2012-13, while the women’s swimming and diving team finished runner-up at the national meet, marking its fifth straight finish of second or better at the NCAA Championships. The men earned fifth place at the national finals, placing in the top 10 for the ninth straight season.
“I like the chemistry of the team,” Peters, in his 17th season as head coach, said. “They work very well together and they work very hard together, which is an important thing. So far up to this point, I’ve been pleased with the results at practice and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do.”
Twenty-five student-athletes earned All-American honors at the 2013 national meet and 16 of them are returning for the upcoming 2013-14 campaign.
Assisting Peters on the staff are longtime assistants Kelly LaCroix and Bryce Pitters. LaCroix has directed the diving program for 17 years, while Pitters is in his 11th year as an assistant for the swimming and diving programs. Also returning to the staff as assistants are A.J. Erard, Cauli Bedran and Alex Bordyukov.
Head coach Sean Peters swimming and diving squads have been working hard in the pool all fall, preparing for the regular season of meets. Peters said that he likes the attitude his team has brought each day to practice.

STEPPING UP: FACILITY UPGRADES BOLSTER SUCCESS By WSUAthletics.com Guest Writer Kyle Stefan DETROIT -- Build it, and they will come. For better or worse, this mantra sums up the current state of major college athletics, with football and basketball powers constructing the grandest facilities to attract recruits and bolster teams seeking to compete and win on the biggest stage. Wayne State is not immune to the competition. Warrior athletic teams are now positioned to thrive on the GLIAC and national levels, thanks to an all-encompassing approach to revitalizing the athletic campus that started under Director of Athletics Rob Fournier more than a decade ago. “Our facilities projects are not only about present conditions but about future student-athletes,” Fournier said. “We have to create accommodations and settings that meet their expectations, and in these cases, exceed expectations.” Most noteworthy was the announcement of the Harwell Field Project for WSU Baseball in early June.
In a nod to Harwell’s days with the Brooklyn Dodgers, one of his first major league stops, the facade of the grandstands, team clubhouse, press box and foyer will mirror that of old Ebbets Field. The stadium will also be located off Brooklyn Street. “It’s a remarkable project,” head baseball coach Ryan Kelley said. “Beyond having a great look and feel to add to our current baseball facility, it adds a certain nostalgia. Together with the Green Monster replica and the old Tiger Stadium scoreboard in left field, having the name ‘Harwell’ associated with this stadium and our program is special.” Harwell’s commitment to youth baseball was well known. In addition to housing the Warriors, Harwell Field and Wayne State University will continue to provide access to local youth and high school teams. “Again, it’s about future student athletes,” Kelley continued. “If you think about the student-athletes playing baseball now, most have probably never heard of him. But they walk in the facility and they can learn about him, his connection to the city, his connection to baseball, and all the things he did for those generations. It’s very important that we not just create a special setting just for the baseball team but for the entire athletic complex.” The baseball program has experienced recent success on the national level, first under former coach Jay Alexander, and now for the last five years under Kelley, heading to three straight NCAA Regionals from 201012 and winning 30+ games for the fourth consecutive season in 2013.

Ernie Harwell spent 55 years in the major leagues, retiring after broadcasting more games than any other announcer. He was the first active announcer to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and his legacy endures throughout the city of Detroit, where he spent 42 years on the radio and television calling action for the Tigers. As old Tiger Stadium is held in reverence among devout baseball fans in the area, so is the spirit and persona of Ernie Harwell. Fournier worked with the Harwell Foundation and Wayne State leaders to preserve that name through the future construction of a stadium-type complex at the current WSU Baseball Field. “The Harwell piece is a great connection for the entire University,” Fournier said. “Ernie Harwell had the ear of Michigan, and we are giving it a voice by building this facility.

“With this great opportunity comes responsibility to represent the name ‘Harwell.’ He’s associated with the city of Detroit, not to mention baseball. We’ve known about the project internally for quite some time, and we want to get Phase One up and running as quickly as possible.” Continued fundraising will be a key to that goal. The WSU Athletic Department recently announced the creation of the .400 Club, calling on at least 400 baseball alumni to contribute to the $550,000 goal for the Phase One project, of which $250,000 has been raised as of Nov. 19. Wayne State’s basketball programs have also ascended to GLIAC and national prominence under veteran men’s coach David Greer, and in just two seasons under women’s coach Carrie Lohr, advanced to the NCAA Regional Final. Their success will be bolstered with a new addition to the Matthaei Center specifically for basketball, with all the amenities designed to enhance operations and provide for efficient connections between coaches, players, recruits and families.
According to Fournier, the funding has been entirely secured for the basketball project to begin and is waiting on construction schedules for final clearance. “That piece complements what we need in basketball,” Fournier said. “Each coach will have their own office. We will have a dedicated film room. There will be a greeting area, so recruits can sit there and get a sense of the history of Wayne State Basketball, and also what we are about right now.
The WSU Multipurpose Indoor Facility opened for use two seasons ago, and has provided nearly every team with playing and practice opportunities both in-season and during the off-season, especially for outdoor sports that battle with inclement weather. With the addition of a new scoreboard in that building, men’s and women’s tennis will benefit from the ability to play indoor home matches.

“We are on the radio, we are on television, but what do the facilities look like? What we are building accomplishes our goals and objectives in men’s and women’s basketball of complimenting a first class coaching staff and exceeding student-athlete needs and expectations.” Competitive successes – and subsequent facility upgrades – haven’t been limited to baseball and basketball. Warrior Swimming & Diving has evolved into a national power under coach Sean Peters, and Fournier is always looking for ways to tinker with one of the GLIAC’s premier oncampus pools.

“The fact that we’ve done upgrades to the pool – we’ve picked up a lot of points in diving at the national championships, and have two national championship divers,” Fournier said. “We took out the huge five-meter platform diving board, which is not used anymore in competition. It allows us to open up our pool deck. It removed an eyesore, but how does it help you? People see it as a competitive upgrade and not just a facility upgrade. Our athletes get through practice more efficiently and it makes the program better.”
“Adding a scoreboard inside the indoor building – when it gets to be October, playing tennis outside can be difficult and playing in April is completely dependent on the weather. We had been driving to private clubs, costing our team time and money. Now, we have two top notch tennis facility outdoors as well as indoors right here, with top notch amenities.” A new scoreboard will also be added to Gym 111, which will serve team practices along with summer camps. Coming off a pair of GLIAC Tournament titles, the WSU Softball program recently saw the completion of its own indoor center, with the latest phase featuring the addition of indoor batting cages and pitching lanes complete with actual dirt mounds. Overall, the 2013-14 renovations showcase a commitment to competitive success and vision for the future. The latest facility upgrades are part of a rigorous, decade-long athletic campus transformation under Fournier. Work is ongoing, and Warrior athletes, coaches and fans have been treated to a bucket list of improvements and new projects each year to benefit WSU teams on and off the playing field. “When I first came to Wayne State,” Fournier said, “they didn’t show me the athletic department in the initial interview. They wouldn’t show me until after the second interview. I thought that was odd. Compare that to today, when they bring in candidates for President, they show them the department, the facilities, and they show all the new people our athletic campus.”

NEW ADAPTIVE MOBILE SITE
The official site for Wayne State University Athletics (WSUAthletics.com) recently underwent a redesign to improve the look and functionality of the pages. However, the improvements did not stop there. SIDEARM Sports and WSUAthletics.com have improved the look of its mobile site for cell phones and tablets. SIDEARM Adaptive, allows users to get the same experience as a desktop user. An adaptive site is a website that has the ability to show all of the same features and content, but will adjust automatically to the viewing standards on the device of your choice. “We are always looking for ways to improve our product and how it is delivered and consumed,” stated Assistant Sports Information Director Cameron Weidenthaler. “This is a huge improvement for the department and I look forward to seeing all of its capabilities. Moving from a restrictive-type site to this adaptive system will allow fans to catch all the news on the go, in a more aesthetically pleasing fashion.” New adaptive mobile site.

Wayne State University Director of Athletics Rob Fournier announced the hiring of Lauren Lepkowski as Athletic Development Manager and head baseball coach Ryan Kelley recently announced the addition of Aaron Hepner as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator. “I look forward to working with Lauren to advance our athletics development initiatives,” said Fournier. “Her familiarity and background with many aspects of successful outreach campaigns and her personal and engaging style is the perfect complement as we engage our various constituencies. Lepkowski spent the previous 11 months at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as the Director of Athletics-Special Events and before that as the Alumni Relations Coordinator at Michigan State University. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in communications. “We are excited to add Coach Hepner to our program,” said Coach Kelley. “His seven-plus years of NCAA DI coaching experience along with his extensive recruiting background will help immediately. However, his desire to mentor and establish championship experiences for college baseball student-athletes stands out. I look forward to him joining our program as we continue to move forward with success on and off the field. “I’m really excited about the great opportunity Coach Kelley and the Wayne State athletic administration has given me,” said Hepner. “I am looking forward to helping continue the Warriors baseball program’s excellence on and off the field.” Hepner spent the last five seasons at Eastern Michigan and took over as hitting coach for the 2012 season.

WARRIOR BASKETBALL AND SOFTBALL ON COMCAST
Six Wayne State University basketball doubleheaders will be televised live throughout the state of Michigan on Comcast channel 900, plus a softball twinbill in early April. The six-game televised slate begins with the GLIAC opener on Dec. 5 against Tiffin. The Jan. 23 match-up against Michigan Tech will also be aired as well as the Jan. 30 doubleheder vs. Ferris State. The three February basketball dates commence with the Feb. 6 games against Northwood, followed by the Feb. 8 doubleheader against Saginaw Valley. The final home broadcasts for basketball will be on Feb. 22 as WSU entertains Grand Valley on Hall of Fame day. For all the Thursday dates, the women’s game will tip-off at 5:30 pm, followed by the men’s game. The softball doubleheader vs. Hillsdale slated for Tuesday, April 1 is also on the Comcast schedule, weather permitting.

Generally we think of hitting streaks as a personal achievement. Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak comes to mind as one of the greatest sports feats ever. In the case of the new locker rooms for baseball and softball, we are looking to string our hits together as a team to achieve the success necessary to be the best. For each person that steps up to the plate and delivers a hit by securing a locker in the new facilities, a hit will be added to the total goals of 20 games for softball and 40 games for baseball, based upon the number of lockers in each facility.

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Twenty (20) fall sport student-athletes received Academic All-GLIAC Excellence honors for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average above a 3.5. Recognized by the league office were Ruben Cardenas, Nick Culbertson, Ruben Maya, Steven Neshkoff and Irvin Wyche from men’s cross country; Trent Brodbeck, Steve O’Shell, Chet Privett, Stefan Terleckyj, Brandon Tinsley, Ben Walker and Aaron Weston from football; Kayla Gagnon from women’s cross country; Anne Li Briand from women’s tennis; Nicole Arends, Kristen Bulkiewicz, Jessica DeLeeuw, Jamie Goryca, Madison Reeves and Heather Weiss from volleyball. Another 28 student-athletes were honored for having a cumulative GPA between a 3.0 and 3.49. The Wayne State Athletics Department recently announced the launch of the Gold Umbrella Safe Zone program. The program is part of the department’s larger development and mentoring of student-athletes. The program is intended to provide a non-judgmental setting for student-athletes while allowing administrators and coaches instruction to aid and address issues confronting society’s evolving setting. The objective is for student-athletes to have an environment open to discussion and dialogue to address personal challenges. Overall, it is another aspect to delivering the “championship experience” to Warrior student-athletes and assisting each student-athlete reach their potential through individual growth.
