MISSION STATEMENT Wayne State University believes that intercollegiate athletics are an important and wholesome adjunct to the principal purposes of the University: (1) the advancement of knowledge through research and investigation; and (2) the dissemination of knowledge through teaching. To that end, participants in intercollegiate athletics must be, first and foremost, students whose fundamental aim is to obtain a sound education. A major mission of the University is to achieve an increasing level of excellence in the quality of its programs and to enhance the visibility and recognition of the University as a whole. Students who participate in intercollegiate athletics are directly involved in the implementation of this mission of excellence, and by such participation, provide a unifying objective of community and University. Wayne State University believes that a well-balanced program in intercollegiate sports is important so long as it remains in proper focus as an ancillary of the real purposes of the University; so long as it remains under academic control; so long as the players are bona fide students; and so long as the coaches strive to instill qualities of honesty, sportsmanship and clean play.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ROB FOURNIER

Since Rob Fournier was named Director of Athletics at Wayne State University on 1 September 2000, a lot has changed. In those 12 years, the department’s competitive success, classroom achievements, community outreach initiatives and the physical structure of the athletic campus has seen a significant transformation. That development has followed a strategic plan that models business forecasting and has realized defined goals/objectives. The results are welldocumented. That competitive success is evident in WSU’s national standing against all Division II institutions. WSU’s 11 best finishes in the prestigious NACDA Cup standings (which measures the overall competitive success of athletic programs around the country) have all occurred in the last 11 years including the two highest marks ever in the past four years – 11th in 2009 and 21st in 2010. Those respective finishes secured an unprecedented top four and top seven percent ranking among all Division II athletic programs in the country. Seven of 15 athletic teams advanced to the NCAA tournament last season. In the past 11 years WSU has catapulted over 100 places in the NACDA rankings. Additionally, in those 12 years, 35 WSU coaches have been named Conference Coach of the Year while four have gone on to be distinguished as National Coach of the Year. Last year the women’s swimming and diving program won the first national title since women’s fencing in 1989. Football had its best season ever in 2011 reaching the Division II national championship game. For his efforts, Fournier was honored by NACDA as the Athletics Director of the Year in the Central Region in 2008. Last year WSU had thirty-two (32) All-Americans, which compliments the 37 in 2008-09 and 35 in 2006-07. In the last six years, 195 WSU student-athletes have been recognized with this singular honor. In the past 10 years, 245 Warriors have been named All-Americans, the most in any decade. In the 95 years of WSU Athletics, 264 of the 485 all-time All-Americans have been so honored since 2000. Another strategic measurement continues to be noteworthy. The 2011-12 academic year continued both academic achievement and community volunteerism. The Winter (2012) term’s cumulative grade-point average for all student-athletes

2012 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

WAYNE STATE WARRIORS

was 3.03. Eleven (11) of WSU’s fifteen (15) athletic programs had cumulative grade-point averages above 3.00. In addition, in only nine months, WSU student-athletes contributed an exemplary 7,432 community service hours volunteering at a variety of Detroit initiatives. In the past four years alone, student-athletes have committed nearly 29,000 community service hours with such programs as St. Leo’s and St. Aloysius soup kitchens, Motor City Makeover, Make-A-Wish, Relay for Life, canned food drives, Boys and Girls Club, Toys-forTots, Genesis House, Focus Hope, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Wayne Cares Basic Needs Drive. The rise in both academic average and community outreach has been dramatic, consistent and unprecedented. In addition, in the latest federally-mandated graduation rate report, it noted WSU student-athletes received an undergraduate degree at a rate 26 percent higher than the comparable campus population. These, and other academic achievements, are recognized at the annual academic banquet, which he started in 2001 and combines a salute to the University’s faculty. Fournier’s ability to generate private and corporate support has dramatically altered the physical setting of the athletic campus and the practice/competitive opportunities for WSU student-athletes. In his 12 years, he has secured $10,598,946 in revenue excluding an additional 1.374 million in deferred gifts. That total has helped complete the following facility initiatives: football locker room; multipurpose indoor facility; baseball’s replica Fenway Park baseball stadium which displays the former Tiger Stadium scoreboard on its famous “Green Monster facade; men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms; softball locker room and coaches offices, along with a grandstand, walkway and press box; a Boston Garden-like parquet floor for

basketball; Hall of Fame foyer; swimming video board, pool deck and bleachers in the natatorium; football ticket booths and stadium entrance; outdoor marquee; FieldTurf football field; a new outdoor track; scoreboards for baseball and football with a video display; trainer’s treatment areas; and new USTA outdoor tennis courts with scoreboard. The physical transformation has been both noticeable and imaginative and boasts a number of cosmetic infrastructure changes as well. Fournier added a radio and statewide television package to WSU media outreach. He also added the athletic department’s first website, a quarterly magazine (Warrior Within) and a weekly coach’s show (Winters on Wednesdays). He also

directs and oversees the University’s intramural and club sport programs and the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center. Furthermore, Wayne State is the only school in the country to designate a week of activities to promote Women’s Athletics as “W” Week will be having its fourth annual celebration in April 2013 highlighted by “W” Day. In addition, Wayne State has added women’s indoor and outdoor track during his tenure. Fournier served three years as a member of the NCAA regional-ranking football committee whose responsibilities include selecting the top teams in the region each week and the teams that advance to the postseason. He also spent three seasons on the NCAA softball regional ranking committee. He

currently serves as a member of the GLIAC Finance Committee, while also serving on the infractions committee, scheduling committee and long range budget planning committee. He also chairs the championship committee. Prior to joining Wayne State, Fournier served as the Senior Associate Commissioner and general counsel for the Mid-American Conference. While serving as the acting Commissioner of the Conference (1999), he moved the league office from Toledo to Cleveland, wrote and secured a long-term contract for the men’s basketball tournament at the Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) and secured the three largest corporate gifts in the history of the MAC including First Energy as the tournament sponsor for the men’s postseason basketball tournament. He also wrote and negotiated the Motor City Bowl football contract that is the MAC’s longest post-season Bowl alignment. As the chief compliance officer for the league, Fournier investigated and reported on over 350 infraction cases that insured fairness in case resolution and corrective action. At the request of institutions, he has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and conducted campus reviews of compliance effectiveness in financial aid, rules education, eligibility and institutional control. He has served as liaison to various NCAA committees for which the conference held cabinet positions. The MAC presidents recognized Fournier’s achievements when they unanimously conferred a Certificate of Commendation and a mark of esteem for his efforts in 1999. A licensed attorney, he received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his master’s with honors from the University of Akron. He was a national forensics champion and qualified for the national finals in six events. Fournier received his law degree from Akron in 1986 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that same year where he is still licensed to practice.

Phil Nickel was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program on March 3, 2008, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. The Warriors have qualified for the GLIAC Tournament in all four years of Nickel’s tenure. In 2011, Wayne State finished 14-14 overall, its fourth straight season with a .500 or better record. Wayne State went 15-12 in 2010 including a 13-6 conference record, WSU’s highest GLIAC win total since the 1998 squad went 15-4. The team also earned homecourt advantage for the first round of the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. In his first season at the helm, Nickel led the Warriors to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2005. Wayne State advanced past the opening round for the first time since 1997 by defeating Hillsdale in the quarterfinal in Detroit. The Warriors were defeated by Grand Valley State in the semifinals, but finished the season 17-12 including a 9-7 mark in conference play. The following year, Nickel’s squad went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors again qualified for the conference tournament, losing 3-1 at Ashland in the quarterfinals. “In Phil we have the person that reflects well on the long and comprehensive national search process we undertook,” said Fournier. “He brings leadership, a strong recruiting background and knows what it takes to build and sustain a winning program. His positive reception during the interview process by studentathletes, staff and other coaches underscores those intangible attributes that are so necessary to work with divergent groups and achieve success. I look forward to the energy, focused approach and work habits that have been a trademark of his career.” Nickel came to Wayne State after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Houston for the last six seasons (2002-07). His responsibilities at Houston included recruiting, personnel development and

assisting with on-court coaching. During his tenure with the Cougars, Nickel helped coach eight athletes to 12 All-Conference honors, including the 2004 and 2005 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Jaci Gonzalez. “First of all, I would like to thank Rob Fournier for the opportunity to lead the Wayne State volleyball program,” commented Nickel. “This gives me the chance to bring my family back to the Midwest, and to build a championship volleyball program. Rob has made a commitment to the volleyball program, and I look forward to working with him to reach the goals we have set.” His other NCAA Division I volleyball experience includes assistant coaching positions at Illinois State (2000-01) and Wright State (1998-99). Nickel was also the head coach at Division III Thomas More College for two years (1996-97). He compiled a 34-43 mark in his two seasons with the Saints, leading them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #4 ranking in the South Region in 1997. TMC finished the year with a 2017 record. Nickel has served as a committee member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which

He has also coached the Dayton Juniors and Western Buckeye Volleyball Club. Nickel attended Ohio Northern for two years, where he played football and baseball. He then transferred to the University of Cincinnati where he played volleyball on the men’s club team from 1992-95. He served as a captain and president from 1994-95 and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1995. WAYNE STATE WARRIORS

SEASON PREVIEW

In each of the four years of head coach Phil Nickel’s tenure, the Wayne State University volleyball team has qualified for the GLIAC Tournament. With 12 returning letterwinners from last year’s team, Nickel hopes the 2012 squad is ready to take the next step. “We have a number of veterans who have been through the program,” said Nickel. “They know what I expect and what the expectations of the program are, and they have really helped lead the way in raising the bar. While making the GLIAC Tournament is a good accomplishment, we have definitely set our sights higher.”

KATARZYNA SAK

The leadership effort begins with the team’s four cocaptains, including senior setter Cydney Biessel and redshirt junior Katarzyna Sak, who are each serving their second year in that role. One of three players in WSU history with over 3,000 career assists, Biessel was an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC selection who finished with a career-best 1,042 assists last season.

“She has come in this year very focused and has done a really nice job,” said Nickel. “I’m really excited about the year that I think Cydney is going to have.” Sak, who missed all of last season with an injury, was an All-American in 2010 after becoming the first WSU player since 1992 to finish with over 400 kills and a hitting percentage above .330. Senior Lindsey Graciak, who Nickel believes is, “one of the best liberos in the conference,” and junior middle blocker Nicole Arends will also function as co-captains this year. Graciak, the 2011 GLIAC co-leader in digs (513), is statistically among the top 10 most productive defensive specialists in program history. Arends led the Warriors in hitting (.274) and blocking (93) a year ago. Junior outside hitter Kristen Bulkieiwicz was an AllGLIAC First Team and AVCA All-Region pick who paced the WSU offense with 402 kills, the most in a single season

in 15 years. She also finished second on the team in digs (294) and blocks (74), and Nickel is excited at the prospect

SEASON PREVIEW

Jackson-Jones, outside hitter Heather Weiss and setter Madison Reeves. “All four are very talented and are going to contribute this year and down the road,” said Nickel. “I’m excited about the future with them.” Wayne State begins its 38th season of volleyball Aug. 31 at the Nova Southeastern University Sharks Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Of Wayne State’s 22 scheduled opponents this season, six qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament including three of its fellow members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

LINDSEY GRACIAK

“I think this could be one of the most competitive years, of having Bulkiewicz and Sak playing together this season. “We have really focused a lot on trying to spread things out so that we don’t rely on one player so much. Obviously having two players with those credentials really helps us out, and we’re excited to have them both on the court at the same time.” Nickel is encouraged by the preseason play of two other

from top to bottom, that we’ve had in a while (in the GLIAC),” said Nickel. The 18-match conference schedule, split in half by the annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover in mid-October, will lead into the GLIAC Tournament starting Nov. 15. Nickel and the Warriors certainly have a goal to be there, and beyond, in 2012.

outside hitters – senior Madie Kent and sophomore Candice Ottey. Kent achieved career-highs in kills (263), service aces (38) and digs (281) last year, while Ottey finished second on the team in hitting percentage (.185) in her rookie season. Middle blockers Jen Finkbeiner, who ended her sophomore season as WSU’s third-leading blocker (73), and senior Julie Sanders are back in 2012. Others returning include junior setter Jessica DeLeeuw, and sophomore defensive specialists Carlee Hunt and Jamie Goryca. Rounding out the 2012 roster is a four-member freshman

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS • SINCE 1918

GLIAC INFORMATION/COMPOSITE SCHEDULE The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports (11 men’s and 10 women’s) while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC were located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and

WAYNE STATE WARRIORS

Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status.

Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affiliation to NCAA Division III. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007, leaving the GLIAC with 12 full members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for the 2008-09 academic year.

The GLIAC moved on under new leadership during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. On July 1, 2010, Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, entered the GLIAC. Two years later, a pair of schools located in the Canton, Ohio area - Malone University and Walsh University - joined the conference. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2012-13. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/ SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Denise Gross, Assistant to the Commissioner; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.

WAYNE STATE WARRIORS AUGUST 25 Wayne State was picked to finish in third place in the GLIAC South Division per voting in the preseason coaches’ poll. Hillsdale, the defending league champion, was picked to win the South Division, while Northern Michigan led the North Division in voting. SEPTEMBER 3 The Warriors picked up their first victory of the season in three sets against Gannon, but ultimately finished 1-3 overall at the UMSL Tritons Classic. Kristen Bulkiewicz, who was named to the AllTournament Team, and Madie Kent were WSU’s co-leaders with 45 kills apiece on the weekend. SEPTEMBER 12 Bulkiewicz was selected as the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week after Wayne State split its first two conference matches. She averaged four kills per set, posting her second double-double of the year Sept. 9 against Ashland and hitting .556 with five blocks two days later in a 3-0 win over Lake Erie. SEPTEMBER 17 In its home opener, Wayne State earned a 3-0 win over Ohio Dominican on Homecoming, led by Cydney Biessel who finished with 35 assists and passed Laura Hayes (1986-87) for fifth-most all-time at WSU.

2011 SEASON TIMELINE SEPTEMBER 23 The Warriors extended their winning streak to four matches with a five-set victory at 20th-ranked Grand Valley State. GVSU came back from two sets down to force a fifth, but Wayne State eked out a 15-13 win to secure its second triumph over GVSU in three years. Bulkiewicz, Kent and Biessel all finished with double-doubles. OCTOBER 1 In the midst of a stretch in which Wayne State faced four ranked opponents in six matches, the Warriors came away with a narrow 3-2 win over Findlay, marking the fourth five-set result in five meetings with the Oilers. Candice Ottey led all players with a .441 hitting percentage and totaled a season-high 18 kills as WSU earned its seventh straight victory over Findlay. OCTOBER 14 Entering the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover having lost six out of seven, Wayne State battled to earn two five-set triumphs over Southern Indiana and Missouri-St. Louis. Lindsey Graciak set a career-high with 41 digs, becoming the first Warrior to exceed 40 digs since 2007. Bulkiewicz finished with 23 kills, and Biessel posted a season-high 56 assists as the Warriors avenged their opening-weekend loss to the Tritons. OCTOBER 15 Wayne State went unbeaten at the Crossover following a 3-1 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside. Bulkiewicz totaled 24 kills, the most by a Warrior in five years. Bulkiewicz, who hit .325 with eight aces and 26 digs, and Graciak, who averaged 5.93 digs per set, were named to the Crossover All-Tournament Team. OCTOBER 21 Sweeping the 2011 season series, Wayne State defeated Ohio Dominican in four sets. Bulkiewicz led the way with her ninth doubledouble of the year, totaling 19 kills and 15 digs.

SEPTEMBER 18 Nicole Arends hit .412 with seven kills and six blocks as the Warriors earned their second consecutive home shutout win against Tiffin. Kent and Jen Finkbeiner combined for 13 kills.

28

OCTOBER 25 Arends hit .516 with a career-high 17 kills as the Warriors picked up a 3-1 win at Tiffin and swept the season series. After splitting the first two sets, the Warriors took the next two to get back to .500 overall for the first time in a month. Ottey, who hit .429 with 13 kills, and Arends’ hitting percentages accounted for two of the five-highest figures by any Warrior all season.

2011 SEASON TIMELINE OCTOBER 26 Assistant coach Kylie McCulley was announced as one of eight recipients of the “Coaches 4 Coaches” Scholarship from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. McCulley, an active member of the AVCA Student Membership initiative, was also given the opportunity to attend the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

NOVEMBER 10 The 2011 season came to an end for the Warriors, who were defeated in straight sets at top-seeded Ferris State in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament. Arends hit .300 with 10 kills to lead the WSU offensive effort. Despite the loss, Wayne State posted its fourth straight season with a .500 record or better. NOVEMBER 12 Bulkiewicz was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team, while Biessel received Honorable Mention All-GLIAC accolades. The youngest player to achieve First Team status in 2011, Bulkiewicz finished with 402 kills, the most by a WSU player since Fawne Allossery in 1997, and ranked fourth in kills per set (3.72). Biessel ended the year with 1,042 assists and ranked fifth in the conference in assists per set (9.65). NOVEMBER 14 Four Warriors were named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, including Kent who earned the distinction for the second straight year. Joining Kent were Arends, Bulkiewicz and Jessica DeLeeuw.

OCTOBER 30 Notching their sixth win in eight matches, the Warriors closed out the home portion of their schedule with a 3-0 victory over Lake Erie. All 13 players on WSU’s active roster saw action in at least one set as Ottey hit .750 with 10 kills, and Bulkiewicz racked up 11 kills and 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. NOVEMBER 4 Three days removed from a shutout loss at Findlay, Wayne State picked up a crucial 3-2 win at Northern Michigan, taking the final two sets to defeat an NMU squad which was 8-2 at home entering the encounter. Earning double-doubles were Bulkiewicz (17 kills, 21 digs), Kent (12 kills, 12 digs) and Biessel (39 assists, 10 digs). NOVEMBER 5 By virtue of their 3-0 win at Michigan Tech and Findlay’s loss at NMU, the Warriors clinched third place in the South Division and their fourth straight GLIAC Tournament berth. Biessel had 42 assists and became the third player in WSU history to eclipse the career 3,000-assist mark. Arends hit .409 with 12 kills, and Bulkiewicz collected 16 kills and 10 digs for her sixth double-double in seven matches. 2012 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

NOVEMBER 23 Bulkiewicz added to her postseason honors by earning AVCA All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention recognition. Besides leading the team in kills (402), Bulkiewicz finished second in digs (294) and blocks (74) and had 14 double-doubles.

WAYNE STATE WARRIORS

The 2012 season will mark the 38th year of varsity women’s volleyball at Wayne State University. Since the program’s inception in 1975, under the direction of head coach Gloria Soluk, WSU has won 644 matches, claimed three conference championships as well as three GLIAC South Division titles, and made two appearances at the NCAA Regional tournament. After posting a combined record of 30-80 over the first four seasons, the 1979 Tartars went 33-15, including an 8-2 conference mark, and won their first of three consecutive GLIAC championships (sharing the 1979 title with Oakland). Kathy Higgins, the program’s all-time leader in career winning percentage (.786), led the 1981 squad to a 34-9 record, which remains the single-season record for victories, and was named GLIAC Coach of the Year. The Tartars went 32-9 the following season but were edged out by Ferris State for the GLIAC title, as the Bulldogs were a perfect 8-0 in league play compared to WSU’s 7-1 mark. Wayne State’s program continued to build through the 1980s as Matt Peck began his 11-year tenure – longest in school history – in 1984. Peck’s teams finished with a winning record eight times, including the 32-6 record of 1986 which remains WSU’s highest single-season winning percentage (.842). In 1987, the Tartars finished 27-7 and qualified for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the first time ever, falling to conference champion Ferris State in a five-set opening round battle. Nonetheless, Peck

32

was named GLIAC Coach of the Year, and Wayne State had its first volleyball All-American crowned in senior Rachel Parham. Parham, Wayne State’s all-time leader in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and aces who was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, was also selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year in 1987, the only volleyball player in school history to earn the award. As the program rolled on into the 1990s, Wayne State eclipsed the 20-win mark three more times under Peck, including the 1994 season, Peck’s final year at WSU. Behind top hitter Demitria Brooks, who led the team with 501 kills and a then-school record 559 digs her senior year and joined Parham as the only players in school history to reach the 500-kill mark in a single season, the Tartars went 26-10 and qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the second time, losing a first-round match at Northern Michigan. Tim Bearden took over as head coach in 1995 and, as the GLIAC split into two divisions, led Wayne State to three consecutive South Division championships from 1996-98. One season after reaching the consolation final of the GLIAC Tournament in 1997, the team posted a program-best 15-4 league record in 1998. Wayne State finished 21-13 overall that season, but would subsequently endure six straight losing seasons as the program struggled heading into the new millennium. Wayne State was ousted from the 1999 GLIAC

PROGRAM HISTORY

Tournament by Grand Valley State in straight sets, and would not return until 2005 in Ernie Gilbert’s second year as head coach. Elisa Joris, a 2012 WSU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, was the standout on that squad, becoming the second All-American in program history her senior year. She led the nation with a 1.79 blocks/game average, second-best at WSU behind Parham’s 1.88 average in 1987. In 2008, the first season under Phil Nickel’s direction, the Warriors went 17-12, their best record in a decade, and advanced past the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Lauren Mallast led the nation in blocking average (1.51), and Sarha Gosselin was selected as an AllAmerican after finishing with 401 kills, a league-best 3.86 kills/set average, and 259 digs. In 2009, Wayne State went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors finished in second place in the South Division in 2010 and hosted Ferris State in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament. Sophomore All-American Katarzyna Sak became the first WSU player since 1992 to finish with over 400 kills and a hitting percentage above .330. Including a 14-14 record last season, Nickel’s squads have finished .500 or better overall and qualified for the conference tournament in each of the first four years of his tenure.

WSU ACADEMICS

SERVICES AVAILABLE TO WSU STUDENT-ATHLETES

Over 200 student-athletes, faculty and staff attended the annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet held in April 2012. ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SERVICES The Wayne State Athletic Department has developed a comprehensive approach to academic services for its student-athletes. The department’s goal is to assist student-athletes in pursuit of their designated course of studies and ultimately to achieve graduation. This objective is facilitated by appropriate academic advising, major selection, tutorial assistance and other life skill development and academic support services. A major goal of athletic academic services is to significantly increase the department’s graduation rate over the next five years and to continually emphasize the success of WSU’s student-athletes in the community. Part of the initiative already has been realized by the department’s annual Spring Academic Recognition Luncheon that honors student-athletes with a 3.5 or better term grade point average. The name of each graduate is permanently displayed on a brick as part of the department’s “Wall of Fame.” The recognition is prominently displayed in the main concourse as you enter the Matthaei Athletic Facility Complex.

Academic Monitoring The Department of Athletics participates in the university-wide early alert system in which instructors provide notification to students and their advisors about unsatisfactory progress after the fourth week of classes. In conjunction with the coaching staff, requests for information about class attendance and performance are sent to each instructor. The academic coordinator tracks individual progress, schedules meetings with students as appropriate, and personally contacts instructors as necessary. Counseling/Mentoring The coordinator meets with student-athletes individually and arranges for group meetings/workshops with other support service personnel regarding academic, athletic, career, and/or personal issues (for example, group sessions covering such topics as test-taking skills, time management, learning styles, etc.) The Department of Athletics has collaborative relationships with many other critical units on campus to help provide appropriate support services. Advising/Registration In conjunction with academic advisors in the University Advising Center, the coordinator assists student-athletes with term course planning and registration, including holding special student-athlete Orientation sessions to introduce them to NCAA and GLIAC eligibility requirements and departmental academic policies as well as to Wayne State University’s academic programs, procedures and regulations, and services. The office also works closely with academic advisors in all the university’s schools and colleges to ensure appropriate semester course selection and timely progress towards degree. The office serves as a clearinghouse for information about campus resources and student support services, university forms, enrollment deadlines and institutional academic policies and procedures. Structured Study In an effort to help ensure the academic success and the development of consistent study patterns of student-athletes, the coordinator organizes supervised study sessions for each team. Tutorial Services, Writing Center, Mathematics Laboratory The university provides free peer tutoring in most subject areas either on a drop-in or by-appointment basis. In the event that the Academic Success Center cannot provide tutoring for a specific class, the Department of Athletics has set aside funds to hire individual tutors. The coordinator works with academic department chairs to identify qualified tutors and is always available to arrange special individual or group sessions in a variety of areas. As in all other services, the office works in a proactive manner to provide assistance before academic problems arise.

Since his arrival at WSU, he has led the Law School in the development of a new Patent Procurement Clinic, an Environmental Law Clinic, an Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic, and the Program for International Legal Studies. During his deanship, Wayne Law has emerged as a leading public interest law school, as evidenced by Public Interest Law Fellowships and a thriving pro bono program. Dean Ackerman has assisted in strengthening the Law School’s dynamic faculty by hiring a number of outstanding legal scholars and practitioners. During his tenure, the Law School celebrated the creation and dedication of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. Prior to coming to Wayne Law, he served as a professor at Penn State University’s Dickinson School of Law, where he taught torts, dispute resolution, conflict resolution theory, negotiation and mediation. Ackerman, a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School and magna cum laude graduate of Colgate University, served as dean and professor of law at Willamette University College of Law from July 1996 to May 1999. While dean, the law school experienced a 60 percent increase in financial aid to law students, a revitalization of the alumni organization and annual giving, enhanced visibility of the Center for Dispute Resolution and Law and Government program, and an increase in the diversity of the faculty and student body. He has written extensively in the fields of torts, dispute resolution, communitarian theory and civic responsibility, and his scholarship has appeared in a wide variety of high profile publications. His essay, “Taking Responsibility,” was a winner of the international Communitarian Essay Contest and was published in the German social science journal Leviathan. His co-authored book (with Robert F. Cochran Jr.) Law and Community: The Case of Torts was published early in 2004. Ackerman is an active participant in professional groups related to conflict resolution. He is a founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders, and has worked on development projects in Tanzania with Penn State’s InterInstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge. He has also served as chair of the AALS Section on Law and Communitarian Studies.

Young art thou, young and strong; Renowned shalt thou live, and long; Honors to thee will throng – and Fame to thee cling.

SPORTS MEDICINE/STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

WAYNE STATE WARRIORS

The Wayne State sports medicine department is led by head athletic trainer Michael Chan and assistants Steve Domzalski, Katie Minahan, Jessica McNally and Andrew Stoll. All five are members of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and provide medical care to the Warrior student-athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for all aspects of the sports medicine program including injury prevention and management, first aid, injury rehabilitation, and drug and alcohol education. Athletic trainers are present at Warrior home and away events to ensure for the health and safety of all student-athletes. During the summer of 2009, the Matthaei athletic training room underwent a major renovation. WSU now has over 1,000 square feet of updated sports medicine space for

increased treatment/rehabiliation and storage areas. Other special features include: a new hydrotherapy area with three therapeutic whirlpools, a designated team physician examination office, and additional office space for the sports medicine staff. In addition to a new air-conditioning system for student-athlete comfort, a new aesthetically pleasing entry corridor was created to allow for easier access to the athletic training room. The WSU Athletic Department works with many different team physicians. They include Dr. Marc Milia (team orthopedic surgeon), Dr. Parmod Muhki (team physician), Dr. Adam Pourcho (team physician), Dr. Richard Singer (team hand surgeon), and Dr. Kevin Prush (team dentist).

The Warriors Strength and Conditioning program is responsible for all 15 varsity sports totaling approximately 400 student-athletes. The major goal of the Warriors Strength and Conditioning Program is to provide to our student-athletes the means by which they may develop attitude, work ethic, mental toughness, discipline and pride, in-self and total program. Athletes will train consistently, sensibly, and systematically over designed and designated period of time, in a safe, clean, and professional environment to prevent injuries and enhance performance. The program operates under the philosophy that strength, speed and conditioning are the keys to a successful athletic career at Wayne State University. The coaching staff works to research, develop and implement strategies to give Warrior student-athletes the cutting edge to achieve optimum athletic success. Warrior student-athletes train out of the Matthaei weight room complex located in the

lower level of the Matthaei Athletic Building. The weight room provides student-athletes with 3000 sq. feet of work space which includes eight Brute Half-Racks by Rogers used to bench, squat and pull. The complex has eight plateforms equipped with Troy bumper plates used for Olympic movements such as Snatch, Power Clean, Jerks etc.; a variety of Pendulum plate loaded equipment by Rogers: two sets of dumbbells and over 13,000 pounds of weights. The weight room also features a cardio area with equipment by Woodway, Nautilus, and Stairmaster . At the completion of their workouts studentathletes are provided Gatorade and nutrition shakes to aid in their recovery. Head strength coach Ruben Mendoza, along with assistant strength coaches Bryce Karasiak and Matt Paja, graduate assistant and interns, directly oversee all aspects of the student-athletes training regimens. A variety of training methodologies are implemented from Olympic movements, Powerlifting and Functional Training.
