MISSION STATEMENT Wayne State University believes that intercollegiate athletics are an important and wholesome adjunct to the principal purposes of the University: (1) the advancement of knowledge through research and investigation; and (2) the dissemination of knowledge through teaching. To that end, participants in intercollegiate athletics must be, first and foremost, students whose fundamental aim is to obtain a sound education. A major mission of the University is to achieve an increasing level of excellence in the quality of its programs and to enhance the visibility and recognition of the University as a whole. Students who participate in intercollegiate athletics are directly involved in the implementation of this mission of excellence, and by such participation, provide a unifying objective of community and University. Wayne State University believes that a well-balanced program in intercollegiate sports is important so long as it remains in proper focus as an ancillary of the real purposes of the University; so long as it remains under academic control; so long as the players are bona fide students; and so long as the coaches strive to instill qualities of honesty, sportsmanship and clean play.

SINCE 1918

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ROB FOURNIER

Since Rob Fournier was named Director of Athletics at Wayne State University on 1 September 2000, a lot has changed. In those 11 years, the department’s competitive success, classroom achievements, outreach initiatives in the community and the physical structure of the athletic campus has seen a significant transformation. That development has followed a plan that focuses on positive opportunities for today’s student-athletes and supporters. The results have been telling. WSU’s 11 best finishes in the prestigious NACDA Cup standings (which measures the overall competitive success of athletic programs around the country) have all occurred in the last 11 years including the two highest marks ever in the past three years – 11th in 2009 and 21st in 2010. Those respective finishes secured that WSU would finish in the top four and top seven percent of all Division II athletic programs in those respective seasons. Eight of sixteen (16) athletic teams advanced to the NCAA tournament last season. In those 11 years WSU has catapulted over 100 places in the NACDA rankings. Additionally, in those 11 years, 34 WSU coaches have been named Conference Coach of the Year while three have gone on to be distinguished as National Coach of the Year. For his efforts, Fournier was honored by NACDA as the Athletics Director of the Year in the Central Region in 2008. Also in 2010-11, the athletic department celebrated the naming of 30 All-Americans. Not surprisingly, the 163 AllAmericans that have been honored nationally in the past five years are the most in any like period and coincidently exceed any 10-year period in the 93 years of WSU athletics. Last year was also a record-setting year academically and in the community. The Fall (2010) term’s cumulative grade-point average for all student-athletes was 3.08. Thirteen (13) of WSU’s sixteen (16) athletic programs had cumulative grade-point averages above 3.00. In addition, in only nine months, WSU student-athletes contributed an exemplary 7,947 community service hours volunteering at a variety of Detroit initiatives. The rise in both academic average and community outreach has been dramatic, consistent and unprecedented. In addition, in

the latest federally-mandated graduation rate report, WSU student-athletes received an undergraduate degree at a rate 26 percent higher than the comparable campus population. These, and other academic achievements, are recognized at the annual academic banquet, which he started in 2001. Fournier’s ability to generate private and corporate support has dramatically altered the physical setting of the athletic campus and the practice/competitive opportunities for WSU student-athletes. In his 11 years, he has secured $9,510,476 in revenue excluding an additional 1.374 million in deferred gifts. That total has helped complete the following facility initiatives: football locker room; multipurpose indoor facility; baseball’s replica Fenway Park baseball stadium which displays the former Tiger Stadium scoreboard on its famous “Green Monster facade; men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms; softball grandstand, walkway and press box; a Boston Garden-like parquet floor for basketball; Hall of Fame foyer; swimming video board, pool deck and bleachers in the natatorium; football ticket booths and stadium entrance; outdoor marquee; FieldTurf and a new track; scoreboards for baseball and football with a video display; trainer’s treatment area; new USTA tennis courts; and a design charette for a new arena as well as a softball locker room and coaches offices. The physical transformation has been both noticeable and imaginative and boasts a number of cosmetic infrastructure changes as well.

In the past seven years alone, student-athletes have committed nearly 35,000 community service hours with such programs as St. Leo’s and St. Aloysius soup kitchens, Motor City Makeover, Make-A-Wish, Relay for Life, canned food drives, Boys and Girls Club, Toys-for-Tots, Skate for the Cure, Genesis House, Focus Hope and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. In particular, the Think Detroit/PAL initiative pairs WSU student-athletes and coaches with over 13,000 Detroit school children in a variety of program and outreach activities. All this is accomplished under the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, one of the first in the conference. Fournier

2011 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

has also initiated an outreach effort for coaches and staff to volunteer one day a month to a charitable cause in a program labeled WIN -- Warriors in the Neighborhood. Fournier served three years as a member of the NCAA regional-ranking football committee whose responsibilities include selecting the top teams in the region each week and the teams that advance to the postseason. This year will be his third on the NCAA softball regional ranking committee. He currently serves as the chair of the GLIAC officiating committee and is past President of the Conference Executive Committee. In women’s hockey, he served as the chair of the Structure Committee and a member of the Executive Committee.

Prior to joining Wayne State, Fournier served as the Senior Associate Commissioner and general counsel for the Mid-American Conference. While serving as the acting Commissioner of the Conference (1999), he moved the league office from Toledo to Cleveland, wrote and secured a long-term contract for the men’s basketball tournament at the Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) and secured the three largest corporate gifts in the history of the MAC including First Energy as the tournament sponsor for the men’s postseason basketball tournament. He also wrote and negotiated the Motor City Bowl football contract that is the MAC’s longest post-season Bowl alignment. As the chief compliance officer for the league, Fournier investigated and reported on over 350 infraction cases that insured fairness in case resolution and corrective action. At the request of institutions, he has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and conducted campus reviews of compliance effectiveness in financial aid, rules education, eligibility and institutional control. He has served as liaison to various NCAA committees for which the conference held cabinet positions. The MAC presidents recognized Fournier’s achievements when they unanimously conferred a Certificate of Commendation and a mark of esteem for his efforts in 1999. A licensed attorney, he received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his master’s with honors from the University of Akron. He was a national forensics champion and qualified for the national finals in six events. Fournier received his law degree from Akron in 1986 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that same year where he is still licensed to practice.

Phil Nickel was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program on March 3, 2008, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. The Warriors have qualified for the GLIAC Tournament in all three years of Nickel’s tenure. In 2010, Wayne State finished 15-12 including a 13-6 conference record, WSU’s highest GLIAC win total since the 1998 squad went 154. The team also earned home-court advantage for the first round of the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. In his first season at the helm, Nickel led the Warriors to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2005. Wayne State advanced past the opening round for the first time since 1997 by defeating Hillsdale in the quarterfinal in Detroit. The Warriors were defeated by Grand Valley State in the semifinals, but finished the season 17-12 including a 9-7 mark in conference play. The following year, Nickel’s squad went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors again qualified for the conference tournament, losing 3-1 at Ashland in the quarterfinals. “In Phil we have the person that reflects well on the long and comprehensive national search process we undertook,” said Fournier. “He brings leadership, a strong recruiting background and knows what it takes to build and sustain a winning program. His positive reception during the interview process by studentathletes, staff and other coaches underscores those intangible attributes that are so necessary to work with divergent groups and achieve success. I look forward to the energy, focused approach and work habits that have been a trademark of his career.” Nickel came to Wayne State after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Houston for the last six seasons (2002-07). His responsibilities at Houston included recruiting, personnel development and

During his tenure with the Cougars, Nickel helped coach eight athletes to 12 All-Conference honors, including the 2004 and 2005 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Jaci Gonzalez. “First of all, I would like to thank Rob Fournier for the opportunity to lead the Wayne State volleyball program,” commented Nickel. “This gives me the chance to bring my family back to the Midwest, and to build a championship volleyball program. Rob has made a commitment to the volleyball program, and I look forward to working with him to reach the goals we have set.” His other NCAA Division I volleyball experience includes assistant coaching positions at Illinois State (2000-01) and Wright State (1998-99). Nickel was also the head coach at Division III Thomas More College for two years (1996-97). He compiled a 34-43 mark in his two seasons with the Saints, leading them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #4 ranking in the South Region in 1997. SEASON PREVIEW In the nine years prior to head coach Phil Nickel’s arrival at Wayne State, the volleyball program enjoyed just one overall winning season. Over the last three years, Nickel’s teams have not only been over the .500 mark, but have played in the postseason. “From the very beginning we’ve had high expectations,” said Nickel. With eight returning letterwinners in 2011, Nickel certainly is hopeful that the upward trend continues. The Warriors went 15-12 last year including a 13-6 conference record, WSU’s highest GLIAC win total since 1998. The team also earned home-court advantage for the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the second time in three seasons. As Nickel does not have a single senior on his 2011 roster, leadership and experience will primarily come from the junior class, particularly captains Katarzyna Sak and Cydney Biessel. “They’ve been with me the whole time here, and it’s really fun to see them grow,” said Nickel. “They’ve really taken a big step forward this year in their leadership, knowing what to expect and being able to convey that to the rest of the team.” The fourth All-American in the 37-year history of Wayne State volleyball, Sak totaled 401 kills and had the sixth-highest hitting percentage (.333) in program history. She became the first WSU player since 1992 to finish with over 400 kills and a hitting percentage above .330. A middle blocker by trade, Sak is a threat everywhere on the court,

as she totaled 59 service aces, 115 blocks and 55 digs last season. Biessel has emerged as one of the top setters in the conference, as she was named to the All-GLIAC Second Team last season. She amassed 993 assists, while her 10.34 assists per set was the fourthhighest mark in school history. Biessel had five double-doubles, as she contributed to both the digging (185) and blocking (39) efforts. Other three-year veterans on the team are outside hitter Madie Kent and defensive specialist Lindsey Graciak. Kent matched Biessel’s total of five double-doubles and finished second on the team with 184 kills. Graciak averaged 4.27 digs per set – tied for fourth-best in program history – in her first year as the starting libero in 2010. “Both of them have done very well, but we expect even bigger and better things from both Madie and Lindsey this year,” said Nickel. “Lindsey has had a great preseason, and I’m expecting her to really take a step forward as one of the best liberos in the conference. We’re counting on Madie to step up and take on some of the offensive load for this team.” Also among those returning are four sophomores who gained valuable experience as rookies in 2010. Middle blocker Nicole Arends played in 25 matches, had the second-highest hitting percentage on the team (.284) and collected 67 blocks. “Nicole has worked very hard. “She’s a great kid and plays with a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” said Nickel. “We’re expecting her to step

SEASON PREVIEW The Warriors will begin the 2011 season Sept. 2-3, with four matches at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons Classic. Of WSU’s 18 scheduled opponents, seven qualified for the 2010 NCAA Tournament including three of its four opponents – UMSL, North Alabama and Gannon – on the opening weekend. “We wanted to challenge ourselves right from the beginning,” said Nickel. The Warriors begin conference play on the road Sept. 9 at Ashland, and will host their first GLIAC match Sept. 17 against Ohio Dominican. The schedule also includes three Sunday matches – Sept. 18 against Tiffin, Sept. 25 at Ferris State, and Oct. 30 against Lake Erie. A non-conference match versus Lewis is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Mishawaka (Ind.) High School. The third annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover will be held Oct. 1415, at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill., with a schedule to be determined. Following the Crossover, three of WSU’s eight remaining matches will be played at the Matthaei, leading into the 2011 GLIAC Tournament beginning Thursday, Nov. 10. While Nickel is pleased with the progression of the WSU volleyball program under his watch, he is ready to get it over the hump and make a significant run in the postseason. “We’ve done well, but we’re ready to take the next step and hopefully this year we can achieve that.”

LINDSEY GRACIAK

up and take on a bigger role this year.” Before being slowed by an injury late in the season, outside hitter Kristen Bulkiewicz had double-digit kill totals in six matches on her way to 135 kills for the year. Backup setter Jessica DeLeeuw and middle blocker Jen Finkbeiner saw limited playing time but will be counted on to contribute more in their sophomore campaigns. Nickel has liked what he has seen from all of his sophomores in the spring and during camp. “They’re all going to contribute and will be part of the success of this team,” said Nickel. Six newcomers, including four who signed National Letters of Intent, will round out the 2011 roster, and Nickel is excited by the athleticism and talent of his recruiting class. Outside hitter Morgan Dickerson played three years at Vista Murrieta in California, helping the team to a league title in 2010. A graduate of Walled Lake Northern, defensive specialist Carlee Hunt was an all-region, all-area and all-conference player. Ontario native Candice Ottey will boost the outside hitter position, as the Ajax graduate led the Toronto Element club team to a provincial championship in 2009-10. Middle blocker Paige Stevenson was Harrison High School’s top blocker in 2009 and 2010, guiding the Raiders to their fourth straight sectional title as a senior. Defensive specialist Jamie Goryca and middle blocker Julie Sanders will provide added depth to the 14-player roster. 2011 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS

SINCE 1918

GLIAC INFORMATION/COMPOSITE SCHEDULE The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports (11 men’s and 10 women’s) while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC were located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and

Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status.

Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affiliation to NCAA Division III. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007, and competes in 18 of the league’s championships. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full members

as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for the 2008-09 academic year. The GLIAC moved on under new leadership during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. On July 1, 2010, Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, entered the GLIAC. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2011-12. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/ SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Denise Gross, Assistant to the Commissioner; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.

2010 SEASON TIMELINE AUGUST 24 Wayne State was predicted to finish in second place behind defending conference champion Hillsdale in the GLIAC South Division, according to the 2010 preseason poll. The Warriors tallied 27 points in the poll, nine fewer than the Chargers. Ferris State and Grand Valley State each totaled 32 points to tie for first in the North Division. SEPTEMBER 3 At the University of Indianapolis Invitational, the Warriors opened their 2010 season with a 3-0 loss to the host Greyhounds, who were ranked fourth and coming off an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight in 2009. WSU came back in the afternoon to defeat Tusculum, 3-1, as freshman Kristen Bulkiewicz totaled 16 kills and 16 digs for a double-double. SEPTEMBER 4 The Warriors finished their opening weekend with a 2-2 record following a 3-0 win over West Virginia State and a 3-1 setback against #25 Truman. Sophomore Katarzyna Sak posted an impressive double-double with 14 kills and 12 blocks in the victory over the Yellow Jackets. Sak was selected to the All-Tournament Team, posting 51 kills and 30 blocks with a .263 hitting percentage in the four matches. SEPTEMBER 10 Three days after a 3-0 loss at #24 Hillsdale, WSU’s third ranked opponent in only five matches, the Warriors blanked GLIAC newcomer Lake Erie in their home opener. Sak finished with 15 kills, four more than the entire Lake Erie squad. She hit .778, the highest single-match hitting percentage by a WSU player in at least a decade. SEPTEMBER 11 Despite a then-career high 16 kills from Sak and 10 from freshman Nicole Arends, Wayne State came out on the losing end of a tightly-contested 3-0 result against Ashland. Neither the Warriors nor the Eagles led by more than five points in a rematch from the 2009 GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals.

SEPTEMBER 25 Extending its winning streak to four, Wayne State defeated Ferris State for the first time since 1998. It was the third straight meeting between the schools to last five sets. Sak led all players with 18 kills and six blocks, while Kent (11 kills, 10 digs) and Biessel (43 assists, 15 digs) each had a double-double. SEPTEMBER 27 Sak was selected GLIAC South Division Player of the Week after totaling 44 kills, 16 blocks and seven aces as WSU went 2-1 against North Division foes, including a 3-0 setback to Grand Valley State the day before. This was the first GLIAC weekly award for Sak, who at the time led the conference in blocks per set (1.49) and ranked second in hitting percentage (.340). OCTOBER 1 After splitting the first two sets (25-23, 22-25), Wayne State took the next two (2515, 25-23) to defeat Findlay for the fifth straight time. Kent hit .345 with 12 kills and eight digs in the road win. Arends posted a team-best .368 hitting percentage with nine kills, as WSU improved to 5-1 in a six-match span. OCTOBER 8 Wayne State opened its five-match road trip with 3-1 win at Lake Superior State. After dropping the first set, the Warriors took the next three to defeat the Lakers for the sixth time in seven meetings. Freshman Amanda Wetherill racked up eight kills and posted a team-best .389 hitting percentage, while fellow rookie Jessica DeLeeuw amassed 41 assists and five digs in her first collegiate start. OCTOBER 9 MacDonald set a season-high with 17 digs, the first of what would be five consecutive 12+ dig performances, in a five-set loss at Northwood. Sophomore Lindsey Graciak had 24 digs, two shy of her then-season high.

SEPTEMBER 18 Wayne State defeated Tiffin on the road in straight sets behind the play of senior Maureen MacDonald, who just missed a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs. SEPTEMBER 19 Earning its second consecutive road shutout, WSU swept Ohio Dominican as sophomore Madie Kent compiled nine kills and eight digs, while Arends hit a season-best .545 with four blocks. SEPTEMBER 24 The Warriors began a weekend tripleheader at the Matthaei with a 3-1 victory over Saginaw Valley State, their first win against the Cardinals since 2005. Earning her first career double-double, Kent collected 10 kills and 11 digs with three blocks. Sophomore Cydney Biessel ran the offense effectively with 45 assists.

26

OCTOBER 22 Playing on their home court for the first time in three weeks, the Warriors hosted “Dig for the Cure” Night (and raised over $1,500 to fight breast cancer) but lost in five sets to Tiffin. Sak, who set a career-high with 22 kills six days prior at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover against Missouri S&T, topped it with 23 kills, the most by a Warrior since Miranda Robison in 2006. Biessel, Kent and MacDonald all posted double-doubles, and Graciak totaled a career-best 31 digs, becoming the first Warrior to exceed 30 digs since Mayssa Bazzi in 2007.

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS

SINCE 1918

2010 SEASON TIMELINE OCTOBER 24 Snapping a five-match skid with a 3-0 win, Wayne State out-hit Ohio Dominican, .358 to .065. Biessel had 36 assists and moved into seventh place all-time at WSU with 1,754 assists. Bulkiewicz finished with seven kills and three blocks.

NOVEMBER 8 Sak received her third GLIAC South Division Player of the Week honor, as she averaged five kills per set in WSU’s three wins. She hit .410 for the week with 60 kills, 15 aces and nine blocks.

OCTOBER 25 Sak received her second GLIAC South Division Player of the Week award of the season after leading Wayne State with 35 kills, eight service aces, six blocks and a .319 hitting percentage.

NOVEMBER 11 The 2010 season came to an end for the Warriors as they were ousted from the GLIAC Tournament in a four-set result against Ferris State. Something had to give in a playoff clash between two teams who finished with identical 13-6 conference records and came in riding six-match winning streaks. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs ultimately came away with the victory and became the only road team in the tournament to win in the quarterfinals. Sak finished with 13 kills, seven blocks and two aces. Biessel had 34 assists, Graciak chipped in with 14 digs, and Arends hit .333 with seven kills. Playing in the final match of their careers, MacDonald totaled 10 kills, five digs and a pair of blocks, and Westenberg had seven digs.

OCTOBER 28 In a pivotal match between two teams battling for a postseason berth, Wayne State earned a 3-1 victory over South Division rival Ashland. The Warriors and Eagles each took a set before WSU nabbed two in a row for its first win at Kates Gymnasium since Nov. 2, 2001. MacDonald totaled a career-high 18 kills as part of her fourth double-double of the season. She contributed 11 digs and hit .429 with two blocks. OCTOBER 30 Wayne State swept its final road match of the regular season at Lake Erie and reached double-digits in conference victories for the first time since the 1999 squad won 12 GLIAC matches. Sak hit .636 with 17 kills and three blocks. NOVEMBER 2 Clinching a berth in the conference tournament for the third straight season, the Warriors battled back from a 2-1 deficit to take the final two sets against Findlay and win their fourth straight match and their sixth in a row over the Oilers. Sak finished with 23 kills, matching the career-high she established against Tiffin. MacDonald and Kent posted double-doubles, and Biessel racked up 61 assists, the most by a WSU player since Rebecca Hague had 61 at LSSU on Oct. 10, 2003.

NOVEMBER 13 Three Warriors received all-league honors from the GLIAC, including Sak who was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team. Biessel earned Second Team accolades, and MacDonald garnered Honorable Mention accolades.

NOVEMBER 6 Less than 24 hours after sweeping Michigan Tech, Wayne State snapped a 26-match losing skid against 19th-ranked Northern Michigan with a 3-1 victory, ending the regular season on a six-match winning streak. The Warriors, who had not defeated the Wildcats since 1990, also clinched home-court advantage for the first round of the conference tournament. As WSU celebrated Senior Day, MacDonald totaled six kills and 12 digs, while Katy Westenberg contributed eight digs and a pair of aces. Sak, who led all players with 21 kills, had six service aces, two shy of the school record and the most by a Warrior since 2004. Wayne State’s 13 conference victories marked its highest total since the 1998 squad went 15-4 in the GLIAC.

2011 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

NOVEMBER 24 Sak was named to two All-Midwest Region teams – the Daktronics, Inc. All-Region Second Team and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Team. NOVEMBER 30 Capping off her successful sophomore campaign, Sak was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the AVCA. She became the fourth volleyball All-American in school history, joining Sarha Gosselin (2008), Elisa Joris (2005) and Rachel Parham (1987). JANUARY 12 Two WSU volleyball student-athletes received special recognition for academic success from the conference, as Kent earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence accolades and MacDonald was an All-Academic honoree. •

PROGRAM HISTORY

The 2011 season will mark the 37th year of varsity women’s volleyball at Wayne State University. Since the program’s inception in 1975, under the direction of head coach Gloria Soluk, WSU has won 630 matches, claimed three conference championships as well as three GLIAC South Division titles, and made two appearances at the NCAA Regional tournament. After posting a combined record of 30-80 over the first four seasons, the 1979 Tartars went 33-15, including an 8-2 conference mark, and won their first of three consecutive GLIAC championships (sharing the 1979 title with Oakland). Kathy Higgins, the program’s all-time leader in career winning percentage (.786), led the 1981 squad to a 34-9 record, which remains the single-season record for victories, and was named GLIAC Coach of the Year. The Tartars went 32-9 the following season but were edged out by Ferris State for the GLIAC title, as the Bulldogs were a perfect 8-0 in league play compared to WSU’s 7-1 mark. Wayne State’s program continued to build through the 1980s as Matt Peck began his 11-year tenure – longest in school history – in 1984. Peck’s teams finished with a winning record eight times, including the 32-6 record of 1986 which remains WSU’s highest single-season winning percentage (.842). In 1987, the Tartars finished 27-7 and qualified for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the first time

30

ever, falling to conference champion Ferris State in a five-set opening round battle. Nonetheless, Peck was named GLIAC Coach of the Year, and Wayne State had its first volleyball All-American crowned in senior Rachel Parham. Parham, Wayne State’s all-time leader in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and aces who was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, was also selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year in 1987, the only volleyball player in school history to earn the award. As the program rolled on into the 1990s, Wayne State eclipsed the 20-win mark three more times under Peck, including the 1994 season, Peck’s final year at WSU. Behind top hitter Demitria Brooks, who led the team with 501 kills and a then-school record 559 digs her senior year and joined Parham as the only players in school history to reach the 500-kill mark in a single season, the Tartars went 26-10 and qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the second time, losing a first-round match at Northern Michigan. Tim Bearden took over as head coach in 1995 and, as the GLIAC split into two divisions, led Wayne State to three consecutive South Division championships from 1996-98. One season after reaching the consolation final of the GLIAC Tournament in 1997, the team posted a program-best 15-4 league record in 1998. Wayne State finished 21-13 overall that

season, but would subsequently endure six straight losing seasons as the program struggled heading into the new millennium. Wayne State was ousted from the 1999 GLIAC Tournament by Grand Valley State in straight sets, and would not return until 2005 in Ernie Gilbert’s second year as head coach. Elisa Joris was the standout on that squad, becoming the second All-American in program history her senior year. She led the nation with a 1.79 blocks/game average, second-best at WSU behind Parham’s 1.88 average in 1987. In 2008, the first season under Phil Nickel’s direction, the Warriors went 17-12, their best record in a decade, and advanced past the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Lauren Mallast led the nation in blocking average (1.51), and Sarha Gosselin was selected as an AllAmerican after finishing with 401 kills, a league-best 3.86 kills/set average, and 259 digs. Nickel’s squads qualified for the conference tournament in each of the first three years of his tenure. In 2009, Wayne State went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors finished in second place in the South Division last year and hosted Ferris State in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament. Sophomore Katarzyna Sak became the fourth WSU volleyball AllAmerican in school history.

WSU ACADEMICS SERVICES AVAILABLE TO WSU STUDENT-ATHLETES Academic Monitoring The Department of Athletics participates in the university-wide early alert system in which instructors provide notification to students and their advisors about unsatisfactory progress after the fourth week of classes. In conjunction with the coaching staff, requests for information about class attendance and performance are sent to each instructor. The academic coordinator tracks individual progress, schedules meetings with students as appropriate, and personally contacts instructors as necessary. Counseling/Mentoring The coordinator meets with student-athletes individually and arranges for group meetings/workshops with other support service personnel regarding academic, athletic, career, and/or personal issues (for example, group sessions covering such topics as test-taking skills, time management, learning styles, etc.) The Department of Athletics has collaborative relationships with many other critical units on campus to help provide appropriate support services. Advising/Registration In conjunction with academic advisors in the University Advising Center, the coordinator assists student-athletes with term course planning and registration, including holding special student-athlete Orientation sessions to introduce them to NCAA and GLIAC eligibility requirements and departmental academic policies as well as to Wayne State University’s academic programs, procedures and regulations, and services. The office also works closely with academic advisors in all the university’s schools and colleges to ensure appropriate semester course selection and timely progress towards degree. The office serves as a clearinghouse for information about campus resources and student support services, university forms, enrollment deadlines and institutional academic policies and procedures. Structured Study In an effort to help ensure the academic success and the development of consistent study patterns of student-athletes, the coordinator organizes supervised study sessions for each team. Tutorial Services, Writing Center, Mathematics Laboratory The university provides free peer tutoring in most subject areas either on a drop-in or by-appointment basis. In the event that the Academic Success Center cannot provide tutoring for a specific class, the Department of Athletics has set aside funds to hire individual tutors. The coordinator works with academic department chairs to identify qualified tutors and is always available to arrange special individual or group sessions in a variety of areas. As in all other services, the office works in a proactive manner to provide assistance before academic problems arise.

Over 200 student-athletes, faculty and staff attended the annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet held in April 2010. ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SERVICES The Wayne State Athletic Department has developed a comprehensive approach to academic services for its student-athletes. The department’s goal is to assist student-athletes in pursuit of their designated course of studies and ultimately to achieve graduation. This objective is facilitated by appropriate academic advising, major selection, tutorial assistance and other life skill development and academic support services. A major goal of athletic academic services is to significantly increase the department’s graduation rate over the next five years and to continually emphasize the success of WSU’s student-athletes in the community. Part of the initiative already has been realized by the department’s annual Spring Academic Recognition Banquet that honors student-athletes with a 3.5 or better term grade point average. The name of each graduate is permanently displayed on a brick as part of the department’s “Wall of Fame.” The recognition is prominently displayed in the main concourse as you enter the Matthaei Athletic Facility Complex.

Robert M. Ackerman was named the 10th dean of Wayne State University Law School in May 2008. Dean Ackerman will also serve as WSU’s Faculty Athletic Representative. Ackerman came to WSU from the Penn State University Dickinson School of Law, where he taught torts, dispute resolution, conflict resolution theory, negotiation and mediation. He also served as chair of several committees and was the director of the Center for Dispute Resolution, the nation’s seventh-ranked law school dispute resolution program. A cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, Ackerman served as dean and professor of law at Willamette University College of Law from July 1996 to May 1999. While dean, the law school experienced a 60 percent increase in financial aid to law students, a revitalization of the alumni organization and annual giving, enhanced visibility of the Center for Dispute Resolution and Law and Government program, and an increase in the diversity of the faculty and student body. Ackerman has held academic appointments at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, the University of Vienna School of Law, the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and Leicester Polytechnic School of Law. He has also been employed by the Denver firm of Holme Roberts & Owen and the Harvard Prison Legal Assistance Project. He has written extensively in the fields of torts, dispute resolution, communitarian theory and civic responsibility, and his scholarship has appeared in a wide variety of high profile publications. His recent essay, “Taking Responsibility,” was a winner of the international Communitarian Essay Contest. His co-authored book (with Robert F. Cochran Jr.) titled “Law and Community: The Case of Torts,” was published early in 2004. Ackerman is an active participant in professional groups related to conflict resolution, and completed a term as chair of the AALS Section on Law and Communitarian Studies. A founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders, he has been working on development projects in Tanzania with Penn State’s InterInstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge. 2011 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

The Green and Gold of old Wayne U. flies over the field today. Our hearts are light for with our might A vict’ry is on its way. The team is strong, for them we’ll cheer, Wayne U. will march along. And at the end our voices blend in Wayne U.’s vict’ry song. – Don Gragg

Hymn to Wayne To Thee our Alma Mater Homage we bring. Brave hearts raise grateful voices Thy praise to sing. Young art thou, young and strong; Renowned shalt thou live, and long; Honors to thee will throng – and Fame to thee cling. We laud thee, Alma Mater. Guardian of Right. Thou art our guide, our mentor – Thy name shines bright.

Keep Learning’s light aflame, and hold Truth a sacred name, Honor, thy steadfast aim. All Hail to thy might! – Nicholas Stanley Oates WSUATHLETICS.COM

SPORTS MEDICINE/STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

The Wayne State sports medicine department is led by head athletic trainer Michael Chan and assistants Steve Domzalski, Natalie Herter, Katie Minahan and Josh Priehs. All five are members of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and provide medical care to the Warrior student-athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for all aspects of the sports medicine program including injury prevention and management, first aid, injury rehabilitation, and drug and alcohol education. Athletic trainers are present at Warrior home and away events to ensure for the health and safety of all student-athletes.

During the summer of 2009, the Matthaei athletic training room underwent a major renovation. WSU now has over 1,000 square feet of updated sports medicine space for increased treatment/rehabiliation and storage areas. Other special features include: a new hydrotherapy area with three therapeutic whirlpools, a designated team physician examination office, and additional office space for the sports medicine staff. In addition to a new air-conditioning system for student-athlete comfort, a new aesthetically pleasing entry corridor was created to allow for easier access to the athletic training room.

The Warrior Strength and Conditioning program is responsible for all 16 varsity sports totaling approximately 400 student-athletes. The Warrior strength and conditioning program strives to maximize every athlete’s potential through the use of safe, effective, and time efficient training protocols with an emphasis on intensity and execution, while minimizing the risk of injury. Warrior student-athletes train out of the Matthaei complex weight room located in the lower level of the Matthaei Athletic Building. This weight room provides studentathletes with over 3,000 sq. feet of work space which includes six Brute Half Racks by Rogers used to bench, squat, and clean; a variety of plate loaded equipment by MedX, Nautilus and Hammer Strength as well as a new line of Pendulum equipment by Rogers; two sets of dumbbells, and over 13,000 pounds of weights including both bumper plates

and polyurethane Iron Grip plates. The weight room also features a cardio area with equipment by Woodway, Nautilus and Stairmaster. At the completion of their workouts, Warrior student-athletes also receive Gatorade and nutrition shakes to aid in their recovery. Head strength coach Ruben Mendoza, along with assistant strength coach Bryce Karasiak, graduate assistants and interns, directly oversee all aspects of the studentathletes’ workout regimens. A wide variety of training modalities are employed from power lifting and Olympic lifting, to machine based, dumbbell and kettle bell, and strong-man type lifting. The future of Wayne State athletics includes a multi-purpose student-athlete complex which will house a state-of-the-art 10,000 sq. ft. training facility and athletic offices.
