M. Roy Wilson, M.D., M.S., was unanimously elected President of Wayne State University by the Board of Governors on June 5, 2013. He assumed the presidency on August 1, 2013. Dr. Wilson previously served as deputy director for strategic scientific planning and program coordination at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As deputy director, Dr. Wilson led the development and implementation of an integrated system for planning, coordinating, and evaluating the NIH health disparities research portfolio, in collaboration with the

NIH institutes and centers. He also co-chaired the recently announced NIH Common Fund programs: the Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity Initiative and the National Research Mentoring Network. Previously, Dr. Wilson was dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for health sciences at Creighton University, president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and, concurrently, chancellor of the University of Colorado Denver and chair of the Board of Directors of University of Colorado Hospital. Immediately prior to joining NIH, Dr. Wilson chaired the Board of Directors of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and was acting president during part of that time. Under Dr. Wilson’s leadership, the university regained full institutional accreditation and stabilized its finances. Dr. Wilson’s research has focused on glaucoma and blindness in populations from the Caribbean to West Africa. He holds elected memberships in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the International Glaucoma Research Society and the American

Ophthalmological Society. He has served on the executive committee of the NIH-funded Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study and currently chairs the Data Monitoring and Oversight Committee of the NIH-funded Los Angeles Latino Eye Study. Dr. Wilson was a member of the advisory councils of both NIMHD and the former National Center for Research Resources, as well as the NIH Director’s Working Group on Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce. Dr. Wilson received his undergraduate degree from Allegheny College, an M.S. in epidemiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He was selected for the list of Best Doctors in America for a consecutive 14 years by Best Doctors Inc. and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Healthcare CEO of the Year in 2011. His additional honors include the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Senior Achievement Award, the Distinguished Physician Award from the Minority Health Institute, the Herbert W. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS ROB FOURNIER

Since Rob Fournier was named Director of Athletics at Wayne State University on 1 September 2000, a lot has changed. In those 13 years, the department’s competitive success, classroom achievements, community outreach initiatives and the physical structure of the athletic campus has seen a significant transformation. That development has followed a strategic plan that models business forecasting and has realized defined goals/objectives. The results are well-documented. That competitive success is evident in WSU’s national standing against all Division II institutions. WSU’s 12 best finishes in the prestigious NACDA Cup standings (which measures the overall competitive success of athletic programs around the country) have all occurred in the last 12 years including the two highest marks ever in the past five years – 11th in 2009 and 21st in 2010. Those respective finishes secured an unprecedented top four and top seven percent ranking among all Division II athletic programs in the country. Nine of 17 athletic teams advanced to the NCAA tournament last season. In the past 12 years WSU has catapulted over 100 places in the NACDA rankings. Additionally, in those 13 years, 38 WSU coaches have been named Conference Coach of the Year while four have gone on to be distinguished as National Coach of the Year. In 2012, the women’s swimming and diving program won the first national title since women’s fencing in 1989. Football had its best season ever in 2011 reaching the Division II national championship game. During Fournier’s tenure at WSU, Warrior athletic teams have won 28 conference regular-season titles, seven league tournament titles and six post-season regional, super regional or national titles. For his efforts, Fournier was honored by NACDA as the Athletics Director of the Year in the Central Region in 2008. Last year WSU had twenty-seven (27) All-Americans. In the past 10 years, 260 Warriors have been named AllAmericans, the most in any decade. In the 96 years of WSU Athletics, 291 of the 512 all-time All-Americans have been so honored since 2000. Another strategic measurement continues to be noteworthy. The 2012-13 academic year continued both academic achievement and community volunteerism. The Winter (2013) term’s cumulative grade-point average for

all student-athletes was 3.02. Fourteen of WSU’s sixteen athletic programs (women’s indoor and outdoor track is counted as one) have cumulative grade-point averages above 3.00 with a composite cumulative GPA of all WSU student-athletes at 3.13. In addition, in only nine months, WSU student-athletes contributed an exemplary 9,766 community service hours volunteering at a variety of Detroit initiatives. In the past five years alone, student-athletes have committed 38,422 community service hours with such programs as Habitat For Humanity, University Prep Elementary, Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Warming Center, Adopt a Family Thanksgiving Basket, Basic Needs Drive, Be The Match Donor Registry, Covenant House Michigan, NSO (Neighborhood Service Organization), SOCKS in the City, L.I.N.K. Mentoring (Local Intervention Network for Kids, S.M.A.R.T.S. Mentoring, Big Brother Big Sisters, Make-A- Wish Foundation, COTS, Toys for Tots, Forgotten Harvest, Gleaners Food Bank and Manhood Mentoring Project to name only some of the programs. The conference recognized those achievements with last year’s unprecedented association’s honor of the Sportsmanship Award and Community Service Award. The rise in both academic average and community outreach has been dramatic, consistent and unprecedented. In addition, in the latest federally-mandated graduation rate report, it noted WSU student-athletes received an undergraduate degree at a rate 30 percent higher than the comparable campus population. These, and other academic achievements, are recognized at the annual academic banquet, which he started in 2001 and combines a salute to the University’s faculty. Fournier’s ability to generate private and corporate

support has dramatically altered the physical setting of the athletic campus and the practice/competitive opportunities for WSU student-athletes including the addition of women’s indoor and outdoor track. In his 13 years, he has secured $11,080,139 in revenue excluding an additional 1.374 million in deferred gifts. That total has helped complete the following facility initiatives: football locker room; multipurpose indoor facility; baseball’s replica Fenway Park baseball stadium which displays the former Tiger Stadium scoreboard on its famous

“Green Monster facade; men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms; softball locker room and coaches offices, along with a grandstand, walkway and press box; a Boston Garden-like parquet floor for basketball; Hall of Fame foyer; swimming video board, pool deck and bleachers in the natatorium; football ticket booths and stadium entrance; outdoor marquee; FieldTurf football field; a new outdoor track; scoreboards for baseball and football with a video display; trainer’s treatment areas; and new USTA outdoor tennis courts with scoreboard. The physical transformation has been both noticeable and imaginative and boasts a number of cosmetic infrastructure changes as well. Fournier added a radio and statewide television package to WSU media outreach. He also added the athletic department’s first website, a quarterly magazine (Warrior Within) and a weekly coach’s show (Winters on Wednesdays). He also directs and oversees the University’s intramural and club sport programs and the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center. Furthermore, Wayne State is the only school in the country to designate a week of activities to promote Women’s Athletics as “W” Week will be having its fifth annual celebration in April 2014 highlighted by “W” Day. Fournier served three years as a member of the NCAA regional-ranking football committee whose responsibilities include selecting the top teams in the region each week and the teams that advance to the postseason. He also spent three seasons on the NCAA softball regional ranking committee. He currently serves as a member of the GLIAC Finance Committee, while also serving on the infractions committee, scheduling committee and long range budget planning committee. He also chairs the awards committee. Prior to joining Wayne State, Fournier served as the Senior Associate Commissioner and general counsel for the Mid-American Conference. While serving as the acting Commissioner of the Conference (1999), he moved the league office from Toledo to Cleveland, wrote and secured a long-term contract for the men’s basketball tournament at the Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) and secured the three largest corporate gifts in the history of the MAC including First Energy as the tournament sponsor for the men’s postseason basketball tournament. He also wrote and negotiated the Motor City Bowl football contract that is the MAC’s longest post-season Bowl alignment. As the chief compliance officer for the league, Fournier investigated and reported on over 350 infraction cases that insured fairness in case resolution and corrective action. At the request of institutions, he has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and conducted campus reviews of compliance effectiveness in financial aid, rules education, eligibility and institutional control. He has served as liaison to various NCAA committees for which the conference held cabinet positions. The MAC presidents recognized Fournier’s achievements when they unanimously conferred a Certificate of Commendation and a mark of esteem for his efforts in 1999. A licensed attorney, he received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his master’s with honors from the University of Akron. He was a national forensics champion and qualified for the national finals in six events. Fournier received his law degree from Akron in 1986 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that same year where he is still licensed to practice.

Phil Nickel was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program on March 3, 2008, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. The Warriors have qualified for the GLIAC Tournament in all five years of Nickel’s tenure. The 2012 squad advanced to the GLIAC Tournament semifinals after a thrilling five-set upset at secondseeded Ferris State. The Warriors ended the campaign with an 18-13 record, the fifth straight season with a .500 or better record. In 2011, Wayne State finished 14-14 overall after compiling a 15-12 mark in 2010, which included a 13-6 conference record, WSU’s highest GLIAC win total since the 1998 squad went 15-4. The team also earned homecourt advantage for the first round of the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. In his first season at the helm, Nickel led the Warriors to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2005. Wayne State advanced past the opening round for the first time since 1997 by defeating Hillsdale in the quarterfinal in Detroit. The Warriors were defeated by Grand Valley State in the semifinals, but finished the season 17-12 including a 9-7 mark in conference play. The following year, Nickel’s squad went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors again qualified for the conference tournament, losing 3-1 at Ashland in the quarterfinals. During his tenure at WSU, Nickel has tutored 15 All-GLIAC selections including 2008 Libero of the Year Mayssa Bazzi with at least one First Team honoree all five seasons. In addition, 23 of his student-athletes have earned Academic All-GLIAC accolades including threetime selections Maureen MacDonald (2008-09-10) and Madie Kent (2010-11-12). Two of his players have earned All-America honors (Sarha Gosselin in 2008 and Katarzyna Sak in 2010), with a total of seven All-Region selections plus two GLIAC All-Tournament team honorees. Leone was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. Nickel came to Wayne State after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Houston for six seasons (2002-07). His responsibilities at Houston included recruiting, personnel development and assisting with on-court coaching. During his tenure with the Cougars, Nickel helped coach eight athletes to 12 All-Conference honors, including the 2004 and 2005 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Jaci Gonzalez. His other NCAA Division I volleyball experience includes assistant coaching positions at Illinois State (2000-01) and Wright State (1998-99), as well as a head coaching position at Division III Thomas More College for two years (1996-97). Nickel compiled a 34-43 mark in his two seasons with the Saints leading them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #4 ranking in the South Region in 1997. TMC finished the year with a 20-17 record. Nickel has served as a committee member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which represents the interests of collegiate assistant volleyball coaches, and was also the Chair of the Professional Development Sub-Committee.

He led the Houston Juniors 17 national team to the Silver Championship at the 2006 USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships as well as coaching the U17

He then transferred to the University of Cincinnati where he played volleyball on the men’s club team from 1992-95. He served as a captain and president from 1994-95 and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1995. Nickel furthered his education at Wright State University, where he was involved in the Athletics Administration Masters Program. A native of Richwood, Ohio, he and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Trey and Zackary, along with a daughter Kaia.

Brittany Holbrook joined the Wayne State University volleyball coaching staff for the 2013 season. She graduated this spring from Oakland University with a bachelor’s degree in social work along with a minor in sociology. Holbrook is currently pursuing a master’s degree in social work from WSU. During her four-year volleyball career with the Grizzlies, she was named to The Summit League All-Freshman Team in 2009 after leading the team in hitting percentage at .295, the third highest in OU NCAA Division I history. Holbrook also recorded team-high totals with 14 solo blocks, 76 block assists and 90 total blocks. She was selected as The Summit League Offensive Player of the Week in her junior campaign after getting 16 kills and hitting .517 over two matches. She was named to the 2012 Summit League Honorable Mention squad after garnering 310 kills and a team-high .296 hitting percentage. She was also a fourtime Academic All-Summit League selection. Holbrook became just the fourth player in OU history to record over 1,000 kills from her middle hitter position and is second in the Oakland record books with 377 total blocks. The native of Westland served as a varsity high school assistant girls basketball coach at Pontiac High School in the elite Red Division of the OAA.

Jessica McNally joined the Wayne State University athletic training staff in July 2012, after spending the last three years at Villanova University. She earned her master of arts in public administration while at VU, after graduating from Western Michigan in 2009 with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training. The Mt. Clemens native worked with the 2009 FCS Championship football squad at Villanova as well as the women’s rowing program.

ZACH HOUGHTON Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Joined the Wayne State University strength and conditioning staff May 2013 as a graduate assistant coach after earning his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from WSU in four years. He will serve as the departments graduate assistant coach for the 2013-14 academic year. Houghton resides in Southfield with his fiance Rochelle and their dog Tyson. In his career he played in all 48 games his four seasons for the Green & Gold, starting 34 times. He was born in Chesapeake Bay, Va.

Dale Hartzell joined the WSU volleyball program in 2012 as a volunteer assistant coach and statistician after serving in a similar role at Bowling Green State University from 2007-11. Hartzell was previously an assistant coach at Schoolcraft Community College (19952006) following four years as the head varsity volleyball coach at Detroit Country Day High School (1991-94). The Troy Athens High School graduate earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He and his wife Wendy have two sons, Jonah and Gabriel.

Cameron Weidenthaler joined the Wayne State University Athletic Department in March of 2013 as the Assistant Director of Media Relations and serveds as the primary contact for volleyball, men’s golf and baseball while leading the department’s video and social media efforts. He also publishes the quarterly magazine, Warrior Within. The Warrior Within is mailed out to athletic alumni and “W” Club members. The magazine features recaps and previews of the 17 sports at WSU, the latest news from athletics, information on ways to contribute to the fundraising efforts of athletics and much more. Weidenthaler joined the WSU staff after spending a year at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) as the Media Relations Assistant. He served as the primary contact for women’s basketball, women’s tennis and assisted in coverage of all other programs. In addition, he served as the secondary contact for football. The ULM football program went 8-5 including a win over #8 Arkansas to begin the 2012 season, which gained national media attention. The Warhawks went to the Independence Bowl, its first ever bowl game, where Weidenthaler served as the primary media contact during bowl week. Weidenthaler spent two years at Western Illinois University where he received his Master’s in Sport Management in 2012 and served as the Media Services Graduate Assistant. He graduated from Upper Iowa University in 2010 with a degree in Communication with Sports Emphasis while working for four years as the Sports Information Student Assistant. A native of Panora, Iowa, he also worked in the sports department at the CBS affiliate (KCCI) in Des Moines, Iowa.

SEASON PREVIEW WITH COACH NICKEL

Q: What did you take away from the 2012 team in regards to the program’s development? A: The 2012 season showed that we can compete with anyone in the conference. We started 7-0 in GLIAC play before hitting a rough patch in the middle of the season. We rebounded to play well in the GLIAC Tournament. We have to develop more consistency and a higher level of expectations. We can’t be satisfied being 7-0 or making the GLIAC Tournament. Everyone has to want more for the program. Q: What excites you about this roster and the 2013 season? A: We have a strong nucleus returning, with a really exciting freshmen class coming in. We will have good size, be very athletic, and should be a lot of fun to watch. We have 10 players coming back with significant experience, including two outside hitters, two middles, and our entire defensive specialist group. With the addition of the newcomers, we think this should be a great season. Q: Obviously Kristen Bulkiewicz is a leader on the court after a fantastic 2012 season. What

does she bring to the table? A: Kristen has established herself as one of the top outside hitters in the conference over the last two seasons. She is a big hitter and an excellent blocker. This year, she is going to need to improve her all-around game to be a little better on defense and serve receive. Kristen has the abilities to take her game to another level. Q: Who else will be a go-to hitter for you this year? A: We worked hard to diversify our offense in the offseason, so hopefully we won’t have just one or two go-to hitters. It is our goal to have a balanced offense, where multiple hitters can step up as the situation arises, and take advantage of our players’ strengths to give us the best opportunity of being successful. Q: Replacing Cydney Biessel will be a top priority. Who will you look to in your passing game? A: Cydney Biessel was a four year starter, so it won’t be easy to replace her, but we really like the two setters we have back in Jessica DeLeeuw and Madison Reeves.

Jessica has been in the program for three years now, and knows the system and what we expect from the setting position. Madison came to us from a very successful high school program and a top club team. They both have their strengths and both of them are more than capable of being the setter. Cydney did a great job for us, but I’m excited to see how the next chapter plays out. Q: What needs to happen for this program to take that next step? A: We need to stay healthy. Each of the last two years, we’ve been hit with injuries that our depth just couldn’t withstand. Also, the expectations continue to rise. I believe the team now understands what it is going to take in order to take that next step. Q: Give some insight on the six newcomers this season? A: Hannah Williams came to us this spring from Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Hannah is a very good athlete and a great teammate. Her defense will definitely make us better this fall. Ellen Oppenheim is an outside hitter from St. Joseph, Michigan. She is

very good at the net. She hits a really heavy ball, and is a good blocker. Avery Punches is an outside hitter from Rockford, Michigan. Avery played on a state championship team in 2011 as a middle hitter. She is very athletic and should make the switch to outside hitter without any problems. Macy Steenhuysen is a defensive specialist from East Kentwood High School in Grand Rapids. Macy is the libero on one of the top club teams in the country, which should make her transition to college volleyball a smooth one. Mikayla Shell is a middle from Cros-Lex High School in Michigan. She is long, which you can’t teach, and has very good blocking instincts. Emily Norscia is a great pick up for us. She is a really good player who did a great job in her first year with the Legacy Volleyball Club. She is long and has a great arm. She should fit in very well with our team and is another quality player in the class of 2013. The five freshmen each earned All-State honors in high school and all five of these players will have the opportunity to compete for playing time right away.

GLIAC INFORMATION The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports (11 men’s and 10 women’s) while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC were located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and

Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status.

Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affiliation to NCAA Division III. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007, leaving the GLIAC with 12 full members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for the 2008-09 academic year.

The GLIAC moved on under new leadership during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. On July 1, 2010, Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, entered the GLIAC. Two years later, a pair of schools located in the Canton, Ohio area - Malone University and Walsh University - joined the conference. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2012-13. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/ SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Denise Gross, Assistant to the Commissioner; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.

SEPTEMBER 7 The Warriors began the Findlay Fall Classic with a 3-0 win over Urbana. Freshman Essence Jackson-Jones led the way with eight kills.

AUGUST 27 Wayne State University was selected to finish fifth in the GLIAC Preseason Coachesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Poll with 168 points. Ferris State was selected to win the league with 211 points and 11 first-place votes. Hillsdale, Grand Valley and Saginaw Valley were all selected to finish above the Warriors and all received first-place votes.

SEPTEMBER 8 Eighth ranked Indianapolis handed WSU its only loss in the Findlay Fall Classic, 3-1. Maddie Kent collected her fourth double-double of the year with 21 digs and 13 kills. Cydney Biessel also finished with a double-double, with 42 assists and 10 digs.

AUGUST 31 WSU dropped its season-opener against No. 25 Wheeling Jesuit in straight sets at the Nova Southeastern Classic. Maddie Kent led the way offensively with nine kills while Kelsey Bulkiewicz finished with

The match featured 35 ties and 15 lead changes.

SEPTEMBER 1 On day two of the Nova Southeastern Classic, WSU edged Nova Southeastern, 3-1. Maddie Kent tallied a double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs. In its Florida finale, the Warriors lost to Lynn, 3-2. Kristen Bulkiewicz and Maddie Kent each finished with double-doubles. Bulkiewicz collected a team-high 15 kills and 12 digs while Kent totaled 15 digs and 10 kills.

OCTOBER 1 Sophomore Candice Ottey was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week following her efforts as WSU went 2-0. Ottey totaled 20 kills in the two matches. OCTOBER 13 Wayne State fell to ninth-ranked Indianapolis in the finale of the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover in three sets. Kristen Bulkiewicz hit .417 with 13 kills in the losing effort. Senior Cydney Biessel was named AllTournament Team after averaging 12.45 assists per set and totaled 51, 52 and 34 assists in the three matches. OCTOBER 26 WSU swept Ohio Dominican in Columbus to collect its eighth GLIAC win and 14th win overall. NOVEMBER 2 The rough stretch continued for the Warrioirs as they fell in four sets at home to Malone. It was the eighth loss in 11 matches for WSU. Kristen Bulkewicz finished with 16 kills while Maddie Kent contibuted 11 kills.

NOVEMBER 23 The accolades continued to roll in for junior outside hitter Kristen Bulkiewicz as she was named AVCA All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention. She finished the season with a team-high 382 kills and her 3.64 kills per set ranked fourth in the conference as did her 4.2 points per set.

NOVEMBER 3 On Senior Day, WSU swept Walsh to improve to 16-11 and 10-6 in the GLIAC as Kristen Bulkewicz paced the attack with 11 kills. DECEMBER 24 Coach Phil Nickel announced the signing of four student-athletes for NOVEMBER 6 the 2013 volleyball roster. Ellen Oppenheim, Avery Punches, Mikayla Junior Kristen Bulkewicz was named GLIAC South Division Player of Shell and Macy Steenhuysen all look to make an impact as newcomers the Week after she collected 36 kills in three matches and moved into in 2013. Nickel commented on the class, saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;...from top to bottom seventh in the GLIAC with 3.37 kills per set. this may be the best recruiting class we have had at Wayne State.â&#x20AC;? NOVEMBER 10 WSU concluded its regular season with a 3-1 win at Lake Erie. The Warrioirs hit .200 or better in all four sets. Kristen Bulckiewicz collected 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. NOVEMBER 14 The seventh-seeded Warriors knocked off second-seeded and host institution, Ferris State to begin the 2012 GLIAC Tournament. WSU won the fifth set, 15-12, and was the first postseason victory since 2008. NOVEMBER 17 Three volleyball student-athletes collected All-GLIAC accolades. Krsiten Bulkiewicz was voted All-GLIAC First Team, Lindsey Graciak was a Second Team selection and Cydney Biessel was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. Also on the 17th, WSU dropped a hard-fought match in four sets with Grand Valley. The Warriors ended its season with an 18-13 overall record. In the loss, Bulciewicz had a triple-double with 18 kills, 16 digs and 19 block assists. Madie Kent finished with a double-double of 17 digs and 12 kills. PROGRAM HISTORY

The 2013 season will mark the 39th year of varsity women’s volleyball at Wayne State University. Since the program’s inception in 1975, under the direction of head coach Gloria Soluk, WSU has won 644 matches, claimed three conference championships as well as three GLIAC South Division titles, and made two appearances at the NCAA Regional tournament. After posting a combined record of 30-80 over the first four seasons, the 1979 Tartars went 33-15, including an 8-2 conference mark, and won their first of three consecutive GLIAC championships (sharing the 1979 title with Oakland). Kathy Higgins, the program’s all-time leader in career winning percentage (.786), led the 1981 squad to a 34-9 record, which remains the single-season record for victories, and was named GLIAC Coach of the Year. The Tartars went 32-9 the following season but were edged out by Ferris State for the GLIAC title, as the Bulldogs were a perfect 8-0 in league play compared to WSU’s 7-1 mark. Wayne State’s program continued to build through the 1980s as Matt Peck began his 11-year tenure – longest in school history – in 1984. Peck’s teams finished with a winning record eight times, including the 32-6 record of 1986 which remains WSU’s highest single-season winning percentage (.842). In 1987, the Tartars finished 27-7 and qualified for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the first time ever, falling to conference champion Ferris State in a five-set opening round battle. Nonetheless, Peck

was named GLIAC Coach of the Year, and Wayne State had its first volleyball All-American crowned in senior Rachel Parham. Parham, Wayne State’s all-time leader in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and aces who was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, was also selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year in 1987, the only volleyball player in school history to earn the award. As the program rolled on into the 1990s, Wayne State eclipsed the 20-win mark three more times under Peck, including the 1994 season, Peck’s final year at WSU. Behind top hitter Demitria Brooks, who led the team with 501 kills and a then-school record 559 digs her senior year and joined Parham as the only players in school history to reach the 500-kill mark in a single season, the Tartars went 26-10 and qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the second time, losing a first-round match at Northern Michigan. Tim Bearden took over as head coach in 1995 and, as the GLIAC split into two divisions, led Wayne State to three consecutive South Division championships from 1996-98. One season after reaching the consolation final of the GLIAC Tournament in 1997, the team posted a program-best 15-4 league record in 1998. Wayne State finished 21-13 overall that season, but would subsequently endure six straight losing seasons as the program struggled heading into the new millennium. Wayne State was ousted from the 1999 GLIAC

Tournament by Grand Valley State in straight sets, and would not return until 2005 in Ernie Gilbert’s second year as head coach. Elisa Joris, a 2012 WSU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, was the standout on that squad, becoming the second All-American in program history her senior year. She led the nation with a 1.79 blocks/game average, second-best at WSU behind Parham’s 1.88 average in 1987. In 2008, the first season under Phil Nickel’s direction, the Warriors went 17-12, their best record in a decade, and advanced past the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Lauren Mallast led the nation in blocking average (1.51), and Sarha Gosselin was selected as an AllAmerican after finishing with 401 kills, a league-best 3.86 kills/set average, and 259 digs. In 2009, Wayne State went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors finished in second place in the South Division in 2010 and hosted Ferris State in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament. Sophomore All-American Katarzyna Sak became the first WSU player since 1992 to finish with over 400 kills and a hitting percentage above .330. Including a 14-14 record in 2011 and an 18-13 record last season, Nickel’s squads have finished .500 or better overall and qualified for the conference tournament in each of the first five years of his tenure. In 2012, WSU collected its first GLIAC Tournament win since 2008 over second-seeded Ferris State.

WAYNE STATE ACADEMICS SERVICES AVAILABLE TO WSU STUDENT-ATHLETES Academic Monitoring The Department of Athletics utilizes Grades First software, a monitoring alert system in which instructors, learning specialists and tutors provide notification to students and their coaches about progress in their classes. In conjunction with the coaching staff, requests for information about class attendance and performance are sent to each instructor through the system. The academic coordinator tracks individual progress, schedules meetings with students as appropriate, and personally contacts instructors as necessary. ADMINISTRATION Candice L. (Turner) Howard was named Academic Coordinator for student-athletes at Wayne State in December 2008 and added the title of Senior Woman Administrator in the spring of 2012. She added oversight of student-athlete housing in October 2012. A 2006 graduate of Miami University, Howard had been the graduate assistant in Eastern Michigan’s Student Athlete Support Services (SASS) department since August 2007. Her primary duties were in providing centralized tracking of studentathlete academic progress, learning-centered monitoring, and study table oversight. Howard also served as a liaison between the SASS staff and coaches about individual student’s attendance while working directly with student intervention and learning methodologies for improvement and career success. She had worked in the EMU career services office since January 2008 while serving as a learning specialist/ academic advisor in the EMU athletic department for the past year. In February 2010, Howard attended the annual NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills Conference where she conducted a poster presentation on the WSU Athletic Department’s Professional Development series for student-athletes. During the conference, she also facilitated two sessions for new member institutions implementing CHAMPS Life Skills Programs. A 2012 graduate of the NCAA Leadership Institute and recipient of the NCAA Division II NACWAA National Convention grant for SWA’s she is committed to her personal and professional growth within the field of Intercollegiate athletics. Howard earned her bachelor’s degree in sports studies with minors in management organizational leadership and marketing. She received a master’s in sports studies with an emphasis on sports organization from Miami in August 2007. Howard completed a specialist of education degree from EMU in educational leadership. She resides in Southfield with her husband Ernest. Jason Clark is in his 13th year at Wayne State University and second as Senior Associate Director of Athletics. Prior to being named to that role, he spent seven years as an Associate Director of Athletics. Clark oversees the operations of all sports and provides oversight for football, baseball, men’s and women’s swimming, and women’s tennis along with the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center. During his tenure at WSU, Clark has served as tournament director for the GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championship in 2005 and 2010, the GLIAC softball tournament in 2001, and the 2012 NCAA Baseball Regional. Clark came from the Mid-American Conference office where he served as the Director of Administration. Clark’s duties included coordination of all conference meetings and functions, and was responsible for all Conference policies and procedures. Additionally, he served as the staff liaison for field hockey, wrestling, gymnastics and softball. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Clark, who began his professional career at the MAC as a graduate assistant, graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1997. He is married to former WSU softball player Rebecah Pierce and the couple resides in Oak Park with their children, Piercen and Lucy. Mary Beth Buchan joined the Wayne State University athletics department in March 2012 as the associate athletics director for fiscal operations. She started working at Wayne State University in 2005 as the general accounting manager for WSU fiscal operations. Buchan moved to payroll in January 2007 and became the director of the department in 2010. Prior to working at Wayne State, Buchan worked in accounting for private industries. She is a graduate of Michigan State University and Birmingham Marian High School. A native of Bloomfield Hills, Buchan is married to Dennis and together they have two children, Matt and Jill.

Robert M. Ackerman recently returned to full-time teaching and scholarship after serving almost five years as dean at Wayne Law. As dean, he led the Law School in the development of a new Environmental Law Clinic, an Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic, and a Program for International Legal Studies. He secured funding for Public Interest Law Fellowshups, and assisted in strengthening the Law School’s dynamic faculty by hiring a number of outstanding legal scholars and practitioners. In October, 2011, Ackerman welcomed more than 600 guests to campus for the dedication of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, a project he and a number of Wayne Law faculty members, alumni and friends are helping make a reality. Ackerman teaches courses in torts and dispute resolution. He serves on Labor@Wayne’s internal advisory board and as Wayne State University’s faculty athletic representative. Previously, he served on the Institute of Continuing Legal Education’s executive committee, chairing that committee from 2009-2010. Prior to coming to Wayne Law, Ackerman served as a professor at Penn State University’s Dickinson School of Law, where he taught torts, dispute resolution, conflict resolution theory, negotiation and mediation. He also served as director of the Center for Dispute Resolution, at the time the nation’s seventh-ranked law school dispute resolution program. Ackerman, a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School and magna cum laude graduate of Colgate University, served as dean and professor of law at Willamette University College of Law from July 1996 to May 1999. While dean, the law school experienced a 60 percent increase in financial aid to law students, a revitalization of the alumni organization and annual giving, enhanced visibility of the Center for Dispute Resolution and Law and Government program, and an increase in the diversity of the faculty and student body. Ackerman has lectured at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, the University of Vienna School of Law, the Penn State University College of Medicine and Leicester Polytechnic School of Law (now deMontfort University). He has also been employed by the Denver firm of Holme Roberts & Owen and the Harvard Prison Legal Assistance Project. He has written extensively in the fields of torts, dispute resolution, communitarian theory and civic responsibility, and his scholarship has appeared in a wide variety of high profile publications. His essay, “Taking Responsibility,” was a winner of the international Communitarian Essay Contest and was published in the German social science journal Leviathan. His co-authored book (with Robert F. Cochran Jr.) Law and Community: The Case of Torts was published early in 2004. Ackerman is an active participant in professional groups related to conflict resolution. He is a founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders, and has worked on development projects in Tanzania with Penn State’s InterInstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge. He has also served as chair of the AALS Section on Law and Communitarian Studies and is chair-elect of the AALS Section on Socioeconomics. Christy Nolan was named an associate athletic director/director of campus recreation in the summer of 2010. He added ticket responsibilities in October 2012. Nolan is a 1992 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Business Minor. In 2002, he graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master’s in Public Administration. Nolan earned his EdD. in Ed Leadership & Policy Studies from Wayne State University in 2013. He joined the WSU staff in December of 2003 as the Director of the Mort Harris Recreation & Fitness Center. Nolan is a past State Director of the Michigan Intramural Recreational Sports Association (MIRSA) and a member of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) in which he served as a member of the NIRSA Outdoor Committee 2005-2007 and the committee chair 2008-2009. Nolan is also a member of the NIRSA Assembly. Nolan and his wife Terra reside in Livonia with their children, Shawn, Liam, Aidan, and Quinn.

ADMINISTRATION Lisa Seymour was named to the position of Assistant to the A.D. in Feb. 2010, and promoted to Assistant Athletic Director in Sept. 2012. A former softball player, Seymour graduated summa cum laude from WSU with a bachelor’s degree in business marketing in May 2009, and earned a master’s degree in business administration in December 2010. She currently serves as the sport coordinator for men’s and women’s basketball, softball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s fencing, volleyball, men’s golf, and women’s indoor and outdoor track. Seymour coordinates the annual “W” Week activities in support of women’s athletics each April for the WSU Department of Athletics. She also handles the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame committee as well overseeing merchandise sales. In addition, she serves as the sideline reporter during every football broadcast along with the “Get to Know Her” segment on the Winters on Wednesdays radio coaches show and the Friday edition of the Warrior Daily. Seymour has also worked on numerous athletics building projects including both phases of the softball locker room expansion and the Multipurpose Indoor Facility. She is also working on the basketball coaching offices expansion as well as construction of areas for field events for the women’s outdoor track squad. During her playing career for the Green and Gold, she was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all eight semesters. In addition, she represented the softball squad on the student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC). Seymour was a three-time GLIAC All-Academic team selection, and earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC accolades twice. She concluded her career fifth in games played (220), ninth in fielding assists (298) and tied-for-11th in sacrifices (39). The Davison native served as a team captain as a senior and started 213 games at Wayne State. Nicole Blaszczyk was named an assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions at Wayne State University in May 2012. “Nicole has a marketing perspective from both a professional organization and a collegiate setting that will benefit our outreach and initatives,” said WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. “As a graduate of WSU she understands our audience, our unique challenges, and has the experience and enthusiasm to develop and manage our approaches to increase our fan base and energize our supporters.” Blaszczyk spent the previous 21 months before her current appointment as the marketing coordinator for the Detroit Tigers. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration/marketing from Wayne State in 2011. Blaszczyk was selected Miss Michigan for 2009 and was the 2010 Miss America talent award winner in the dance category. This was this first talent award for the state of Michigan in 25 years and the first in Miss America history awarded for a lyrical performance. A native of Detroit, she graduated from Novi High School before enrolling at WSU.

Lisa Donaldson joined the Wayne State University as Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance and NCAA Liaison in March 2012 after serving as the compliance coordinator at Ball State since 2008. Prior to going to BSU, Donaldson served as the director of compliance at Coastal Carolina University from 2006-08. Before joining the Coastal Carolina staff, she was a compliance department intern at Eastern Michigan University during the 2005-06 school year. After graduating from Arizona State University in 2002 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies Business Management and Exercise Science, Donaldson earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration from EMU in December of 2005. She also served as the head gymnastics coach at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor from 200305, helping the 2004 squad to a conference co-championship. She was a presenter at the 2011 National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC) convention on the topic of Lessons Learned/Sports Specific Administrators. She is a member of both the NAAC and the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators (NACWA). Donaldson was a member of the North Carolina State gymnastics team from 1993-95, where she began her studies in business management. She is a 1993 graduate of Ann Arbor Community High School. Bob Ostrowski has worked at Wayne State University since 1978 following four years as a school teacher, coach and athletic director. He was promoted to assistant director of athletics for facilities in January 2007. He received the President’s Merit Award from WSU in 1992, the men’s basketball booster award in 1992 and also Appreciation Awards for the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot and Special Olympics. Ostrowski received the Facility, Planning and Management’s Commitment to Dedication award in 1999 and the Building Coordinator Program’s 25year Service award. The Highland Park native graduated from WSU with bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1974 and received his master’s in sports administration from WSU in 1994. He is also a member of the WSU adjunct faculty with the College of Education. Ostrowski and his wife, Lynn, have been married for 36 years and have three children, Anthony, Jeffrey and Ashley. Anthony and Jeffrey both graduated from WSU with engineering degrees while Ashley graduated with a doctorate in physical therapy. He also has two grandchildren, Andrew and Mariana.

SPORTS MEDICINE/STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

The Wayne State sports medicine department is led by head athletic trainer Michael Chan and assistants Steve Domzalski, Katie Minahan, Jessica McNally, Andrew Stoll and graduate assistant Amber Wilson. All six are members of the National Athletic Trainersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association and provide medical care to the Warrior student-athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for all aspects of the sports medicine program including injury prevention and management, first aid, injury rehabilitation, and drug and alcohol education. Athletic trainers are present at Warrior home and away events to ensure for the health and safety of all student-athletes.

The Matthaei athletic training room has over 1,000 square feet of sports medicine space for treatment/rehabilitation and storage areas. Other special features include: a hydrotherapy area with three therapeutic whirlpools, a designated team physician examination office, and additional office space for the sports medicine staff. The WSU Athletic Department works with many different team physicians. They include Dr. Marc Milia (team orthopedic surgeon), Dr. Hussein Saad (team orthopedic surgeon), Dr. Parmod Mukhi (team physician), Dr. Aashish Deshpande (team physician) and other physician consultants.

The Warriors Strength and Conditioning program is responsible for all 17 varsity sports totaling approximately 400 student-athletes. The major goal of the Warriors Strength and Conditioning Program is to provide to our student-athletes the means by which they may develop attitude, work ethic, mental toughness, discipline and pride, in-self and total program. Athletes will train consistently, sensibly, and systematically over designed and designated period of time, in a safe, clean, and professional environment. Simply, to prevent injuries and enhance performance. We believe Strength, Speed and Conditioning is the key to a successful athletic career at Wayne State University, we are always researching, developing and implementing strategies to give us the cutting edge to achieve optimum athletic success. Warrior student-athletes train out of the Mathaei weight room complex located in the lower level of the Mathaei Athletic Building. The weight room provides student-

athletes with 3000 sq. feet of work space which includes eight Brute Half-Racks by Rogers used to bench, squat and pull, we also have eight plateforms equipped with Troy bumper plates used for Olympic movements such as Snatch, Power Clean, Jerks etc.; a variety of Pendulum plate loaded equipment by Rogers: two sets of dumbbells and over 13,000 pounds of weights. The weight room also features a cardio area with equipment by Woodway, Nautilus, and Stairmaster . At the completion of their workouts studentathlete are provided Gatorade and nutrition shakes to aid in their recovery. Head strength coach Ruben Mendoza, along with assistant strength coaches Bryce Karasiak and Jordan Balbes, graduate assistant and interns, directly oversee all aspects of the student-athletes training regimens. A variety of training methodologies are implemented from Olympic movements, Powerlifting and Functional Training.
