On May 14, 2008, Wayne State’s Board of Governors voted unanimously to appoint Jay Noren, M.D., as the university’s 10th president effective August 1, 2008. Dr. Noren succeeded Irvin D. Reid, who stepped down on July 31 after a decade at Wayne State. Jay Noren received BA and BS degrees from the University of Minnesota, MD degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, and an MPH from Harvard University. He was a research fellow at the Harvard Center for Community Health and Medical Care, Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences and U.S Congress, and a Winston Churchill Fellow in England and Scotland. He did his graduate and post-graduate work in health policy, health services research, public health, preventive medicine, and internal medicine at Harvard, the University of Vermont, and Michigan State University. He joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976 where he served until 1999 as a tenured faculty member and
in several leadership roles. In addition to his faculty appointments at Wisconsin, he has also held faculty appointments as professor at the University of Nebraska, the George Bush School of Government and the College of Medicine at Texas A&M University and Health Science Center, as a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota and the University of Washington, and Research Scholar at the National Institute of Health Policy. Dr. Noren has previously served in several academic leadership roles including Founding Dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Executive Vice President and Provost at the University of Nebraska, Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin as well as Acting Dean for Allied Health and Associate Vice Chancellor at Wisconsin, Chancellor of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, and President of the Health Science Center and Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs at the Texas A&M University System.

He has engaged in extensive funded research projects and has authored numerous papers and book
chapters. He developed and directed the Wisconsin Center for Health Policy and Program Evaluation and was an originator and director of the University of Wisconsin graduate program in Administrative Medicine. Dr. Noren’s international experience includes negotiated educational exchange agreements with universities in China and Lithuania and work in collaboration with educational enterprises in Africa and England.

The 2008-09 intercollegiate athletic season marked the highest finish ever for a Wayne State athletic program that has seen a steady rise in the national rankings each of Rob Fournier’s nine years as athletic director. The recent 11th in the nation places WSU in the upper four percent (4%) of all athletic programs in Division II. Since his arrival, Fournier’s plan to invigorate the WSU athletic department has centered on three goals - academic achievement, community outreach and competitive success. To that end, the record has been telling. In 2008, he was honored by NACDA as the Athletics Director of the Year in the Central Region. The Warriors eight best finishes ever in the NACDA Cup standings, which measures the overall performance of athletic programs around the country, have occurred in the last eight years. WSU has jumped 100 places in the standings since Fournier’s arrival. In those nine years, 28 WSU coaches have been honored as conference Coach-of-the-Year while three have been distinguished as National Coach of the Year. Also in 2008-09, the athletic department celebrated the naming of 37 All-Americans, the most in school history. Not surprisingly, the 104 All-Americans that have been honored nationally in the past three years are the most in any like period and coincidently exceed any 10 year period in the 92 years of WSU athletics. Last year was also a record-setting year academically and in the community. The Fall (2008) term’s cumulative grade-point average for all studentathletes was 3.048 while the Winter term’s mark was 3.035. Thirteen (13) of WSU’s sixteen (16) athletic programs had cumulative grade-point averages above 3.00. In addition, in only nine months, WSU studentathletes contributed an exemplary 5,529 community service hours volunteering at a variety of Detroit initiatives. wayne state university warriors community outreach has been dramatic, consistent and unprecedented. In addition, in the latest federally-mandated graduation rate report, WSU student-athletes received an undergraduate degree at a rate 17 percent higher than the comparable campus population. These, and other academic achievements, are recognized at the annual academic banquet, which he started in 2001. Fournier’s ability to generate corporate support has vastly improved the physical setting of the athletic campus and the competitive balance of the Warrior teams. In his nine years, he has raised over six million dollars from a variety of sources. That total has helped complete the following facility initiatives: football locker room; baseball’s replica Fenway Park stadium; men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms; softball grandstand, walkway and press box; a Boston Garden-like parquet floor for basketball; Hall of Fame foyer; swimming video board and pool improvements; football ticket booths and stadium entrance; outdoor marquee; FieldTurf and a new track; scoreboards for baseball and football with a video display; trainer’s treatment area; new USTA tennis courts; and a design charette for a new arena. The physical transformation has been both noticeable and imaginative and boasts a number of cosmetic infrastructure changes as well. In the past five years alone, student-athletes have committed nearly 20,000 community service hours with such programs as St. Leo’s and St. Aloysius soup kitchens, Motor City Makeover, Make-A-Wish, Relay for Life, canned food drives, Boys and Girls Club, Toys-for-Tots, Skate for the Cure, Genesis House, Focus Hope and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. In particular, the Think Detroit/PAL initiative pairs WSU student-athletes and coaches with over 13,000
Detroit school children in a variety of program and outreach activities. All this is accomplished under the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, one of the first in the conference. Fournier has also initiated an outreach effort for coaches and staff to volunteer one day a month to a charitable cause in a program labeled WIN -- Warriors in the Neighborhood.
Fournier served three years as a member of the NCAA regional-ranking football committee whose responsibilities include selecting the top teams in the region each week and the teams that advance to the postseason. This year will be his second on the NCAA softball regional ranking committee. He currently serves as the chair of the GLIAC officiating committee and is past President of the Conference Executive Committee. In women’s hockey, he served as the chair of the Structure Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. Prior to joining Wayne State, Fournier served as the Senior Associate Commissioner and general counsel for the Mid-American Conference. While serving as the acting Commissioner of the Conference (1999),
he moved the league office from Toledo to Cleveland, wrote and secured a long-term contract for the men’s basketball tournament at the Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) and secured the three largest corporate gifts in the history of the MAC including First Energy as the tournament sponsor for the men’s postseason basketball tournament. He also wrote and negotiated the Motor City Bowl football contract that is the MAC’s longest post-season Bowl alignment. As the chief compliance officer for the league, Fournier investigated and reported on over 350 infraction cases that insured fairness in case resolution and corrective action. At the request of institutions, he has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and conducted campus reviews of compliance effectiveness in financial aid, rules education, eligibility and institutional control. He has served as liaison to various NCAA committees for which the conference held cabinet positions. The MAC presidents recognized Fournier’s achievements when they unanimously conferred a Certificate of Commendation and a mark of esteem for his efforts in 1999. A licensed attorney, he received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his master’s with honors from the University of Akron. He was a national forensics champion and qualified for the national finals in six events. Fournier received his law degree from Akron in 1986 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that same year where he is still licensed to practice.

Phil Nickel was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program on March 3, 2008, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. In his first season at the helm, Nickel led the Warriors to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2005. Wayne State advanced past the opening round for the first time since 1997 by defeating Hillsdale in the quarterfinal in Detroit. The Warriors were defeated by Grand Valley State in the semifinals, but finished the season 17-12 including a 9-7 mark in conference play. “In Phil we have the person that reflects well on the long and comprehensive national search process we undertook,” said Fournier. “He brings leadership, a strong recruiting background and knows what it takes to build and sustain a winning program. His positive reception during the interview process by student-athletes, staff and other coaches underscores those intangible attributes that are so necessary to work with divergent groups and achieve success. I look forward to the energy, focused approach and work habits that have been a trademark of his career.” Nickel came to Wayne State after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Houston for the last six seasons (2002-07). His responsibilities at Houston included recruiting, personnel development and assisting with on-court coaching. During his tenure with the Cougars, Nickel helped coach eight athletes to 12 All-Conference honors,

including the 2004 and 2005 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Jaci Gonzalez. “First of all, I would like to thank Rob Fournier for the opportunity to lead the Wayne State volleyball program,” commented Nickel. “This gives me the chance to bring my family back to the Midwest, and to build a championship volleyball program. Rob has made a commitment to the volleyball program, and I look forward to working with him to reach the goals we have set.” His other NCAA Division I volleyball experience includes assistant coaching positions at Illinois State (2000-01) and Wright State (1998-99), as well as a head coaching position at Division III Thomas More College for two years (1996-97). Nickel compiled a 34-43 mark in his two seasons with the Saints leading them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #4 ranking in the South Region in 1997. TMC finished the year with a 20-17 record. Nickel has served as a committee member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which represents the interests of collegiate assistant volleyball coaches, and was also the Chair of the Professional Development Sub-Committee.

He led the Houston Juniors 17 national team to the Silver Championship at the 2006 USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships as well as coaching the U17 Black Team for Illinois Juniors Volleyball Club to fifth-place finishes in 2001 and 2002 and had four players named to the All-Tournament
Team at USA Nationals. He has also coached the Dayton Juniors and Western Buckeye Volleyball Club. Nickel attended Ohio Northern for two years, where he played football and baseball. He then transferred to the University of Cincinnati where he played volleyball on the men’s club team from 1992-95. He served as a captain and president from 1994-95 and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1995. Nickel furthered his education at Wright State University, where he was involved in the Athletics Administration Masters Program. A native of Richwood, Ohio, he and his wife, Michelle, have two sons, Trey and Zackary, along with a daughter Kaia.

Jacqui Gatt enters her second season in 2009 as an assistant coach for the Wayne State University volleyball team. Gatt served the last three years on the coaching staff of her alma mater, Churchill High School. After graduating in 2004, she worked as an assistant varsity coach for one season before taking on the role of head junior varsity coach for two
Patti Westenberg joined the WSU volleyball staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2009 season. Westenberg (née Hunter) has over 12 years of coaching experience, including four seasons as the varsity volleyball coach at Warren Cousino High School, where she amassed a record of 98-58-15 and was the 2005-06 Macomb Area Conference Coach of the Year.
years. A 2008 graduate of Madonna University with a B.A. in sport management, Gatt played four years on the Crusaders’ volleyball squad. She was an NAIA All-American in 2007 while also earning region and conference Libero of the Year honors and finishing as the runner-up for the national award. Gatt was a three-time All-WHAC selection and a two-time all-region honoree. She also claimed a spot on the WHAC All-Freshman Team in 2004. Gatt is single and resides in Livonia.
She also spent two years coaching the USA Michigan National Travel Team, as well as six years with the Michigan Elite Travel Team. A 2000 graduate of Warren Mott High School, Westenberg attended and played volleyball at Macomb Community College until 2002, when she transferred to Oakland University to finish her collegiate career. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in history with a French minor in 2005 before pursuing her master’s degree in secondary education at OU, which she completed in 2007. Westenberg resides in Madison Heights with her husband, Eric.

Natalie Herter joined the Wayne State University athletic training staff in August 2009 as an assistant athletic trainer. She completed her master’s degree in kinesiology from Michigan State University in 2009, after receiving her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Grand Valley State University in 2007. Herter completed her thesis on “The Effect of Ankle Support on Balance Using the BESS (Balance Error Score System) Test.” While in graduate school, she served as the athletic trainer for the MSU cross country and track and field teams her first year and at Lansing Community College in her second year. A 2003 graduate of Hartland High School, Herter’s sport responsibilities at WSU will include volleyball and softball.

Tom Gorman joined the Wayne State University athletic department in August 2005 as a sports information intern. He was named assistant sports information director in July 2006. From September 2003 until September 2004, Gorman served as a public/media relations intern for the Toledo Mud Hens, the TripleA affiliate for the Detroit Tigers. He also has over three years of experience in facility and event management at both the collegiate and recreational levels combined. A 1999 graduate of Troy High School, Gorman earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in sports management & communications in 2003 and a master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State in 2006. He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gorman currently resides in Royal Oak with his wife, Katie.

wayne state university warriors The 2009 Wayne State University volleyball team returns nine letterwinners from last year’s squad which qualified for the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2005 and advanced past the opening round for the first time since 1997. The Warriors finished with a 17-12 record, their best in a decade, and went 9-7 in conference matches to place second in the GLIAC South Division. “We were very happy with our season in 2008, but not satisfied,” said head coach Phil Nickel, entering his second season at the helm. “We did a lot of nice things, and obviously had more success than what the program had in a few years, so we were really happy with that.” Some of the “nice things” included the individual accomplishments of Sarha Gosselin, who became the third AllAmerican in WSU volleyball history, Lauren Mallast, who led all of NCAA Division II in blocking, and Mayssa Bazzi, the 2008 GLIAC Libero of the Year. Looking ahead with the lofty goals Nickel has for the 2009 Warriors, however, would indicate why satisfaction has yet to be reached. Nickel is hoping his team can compete for a South Division championship, a GLIAC Championship, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament this season. To attain these objectives, he will have to balance a talented roster which, besides the nine returners, also has five incoming freshmen to fill the gaps left by players such as Bazzi and twotime All-GLIAC Honorable Mention middle blocker Kim Gear. “We want to improve and be better than last year, and that’s not always about wins and losses. We want to be a more cohesive group,” said Nickel. “There’s going to be a lot of competition this year across the board too because we’ve improved our talent level. We’ll be deeper.” At the top of the depth chart is Gosselin, one of five seniors on the 2009 squad. “By most people’s standards Sarha had a really good year, but she wasn’t really satisfied,” said Nickel. “She thinks she can be a lot better, and I think she’ll be better just because she’ll be more comfortable in our system.” Selected to the Honorable Mention All-America Team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Gosselin was also named to the All-GLIAC First Team and both the AVCA and Daktronics All-Region Teams. She led the conference and ranked 28th in the nation with a 3.68 kills/set average, paced WSU with 35 service aces, and finished only behind Bazzi with 259 digs. “She’s taken the leadership role pretty seriously, so she’s looking forward to being a leader on this team, and I think you’ll see bigger and better things from Sarha this year,” said Nickel. Fellow senior Mallast will provide stability in the middle for the Warriors, not only from a blocking standpoint but, according to Nickel, offensively as well. “Lauren had a great year last year, to lead the country in blocking, and she was hitting over .300 for a large part of the year until towards the end. Early in the season she was our best offensive player,” said Nickel.

“We’re looking for her to improve her blocking – we worked a lot in the spring on improving some things she can do to be an even better blocker – and then to improve her offense to make it more consistent. She should be one of the top not only blockers, but offensive players in the GLIAC.” Mallast was an All-GLIAC Second Team and two-time AllRegion selection who totaled 163 blocks for an average of 1.51 per set. She also finished with 304 kills and a .268 hitting percentage. Outside hitters Candis Jenich, Meg Leone, and Jessica Condeni round out the senior class. “Candis kind of came on towards the end of the year and played really well. She’s steady, consistent, and a smart player, and fills a very important role.” Jenich posted double-digit kill totals five times last year, all within her last 10 matches. She finished fifth on the team in kills (138) and contributed 85 digs, 23 blocks and 10 aces. Leone, the only four-year senior on the squad, can play effectively on either side of the court. She totaled 149 kills, 116 digs and 37 blocks a year ago. “Being a senior, I think she’s fired up to help lead this team,” said Nickel. “She’s seen all aspects of the program and been through a lot here, so I think she’s excited about taking the program to the next step.” Condeni saw limited action in eight matches in 2008, but Nickel likes her work ethic and attitude. “She didn’t get a lot of playing time last year, but had a great spring. She’s a great teammate, and everybody loves her,” said Nickel. “We hope that she can be a little more consistent this year and contribute to the team as well.” Facilitating the offense will be junior setter Katy Westenberg, who enters the 2009 season ranked sixth all-time at WSU in career assists (1,875) and assists per set (9.52). She collected 1,072 assists last season, the first Warrior to reach 1,000 assists in nine years. “We’ve really tried to push Katy to the next level,” said Nickel. “She’s a good all-around player – a good blocker, good setter, good athlete – so we expect her to continue to improve and get better.” Nickel also likes the versatility of junior Maureen MacDonald, who has seen action at various positions on the floor. Her role on the team will continue to evolve this season. “Maureen is a great kid and fun to coach. She’s one of our hardest workers. She shows up every day ready to go with a lot of enthusiasm,” said Nickel. “We just have to find the right spot for her. “She’s played some left, she’s played some right, she’s played some middle, and in the spring she played some libero. She’ll challenge and be one of the front-runners to play libero this fall.” Junior middle blocker Mariel VanOverbeke and redshirt sophomore defensive specialist Kristen Miles, who played in a combined 16 matches in 2008, will provide depth and add to the veteran presence of the team, which will be a key considering the youth coming in behind them. “It’s a good thing to have a large senior class when you have a fairly large freshman class, because you hope that those seniors are able to mentor and provide leadership for the freshmen,” said Nickel. “We’re really excited about this freshman class. On paper and from what we’ve seen, it’s a pretty talented group and we expect all five of them to compete for playing time this year.” Cydney Biessel was an all-region setter who led Yale High School to three league titles and consistently led the Bulldogs in sets, assists, aces, and service points. “Cydney is a very talented setter who I think will push Katy and compete for playing time.” Karlene Foisy, who Nickel described as a “big, strong kid,” battled through injuries at Rochester High School but totaled 111 kills and averaged 1.1 blocks/set as a junior for the Falcons. All-State defensive specialist Lindsey Graciak led Livonia Churchill to a 49-4 record in 2008 and a berth in the Class A Final Four. Her 749 digs as a senior set a school record and followed a 579-dig campaign in 2007. Nickel expects her to compete with MacDonald for the libero spot. Madie Kent, an all-state volleyball player and three-sport athlete at Grosse Pointe North, set school records for kills in a match (37), season (636) and career (1,115). She guided the Lady Norsemen to 40 wins and the semifinals of the Class A state tournament in 2008.

katy westenberg “Madie is a very skilled and intelligent player who is going to help us out,” said Nickel. Warren Cousino alum and three-time all-county selection Kate Sak led the Patriots with 352 kills, 176 blocks and a .323 hitting percentage as a senior. “You can’t teach some of the things Kate does,” said Nickel. “She’s a very dynamic, fast, athletic kid.” This group of 14 Warriors will begin the 2009 season at home, as WSU hosts the Warrior Invitational, a two-day event beginning August 28 at the Matthaei Athletic Complex. Wayne State has not hosted a volleyball invitational since the 1997 Tartar Classic. It was important for Nickel to put this event together considering the Warriors will subsequently play nine straight road matches. “Last year, basically our first month of GLIAC competition was at home. Obviously this year it flips so our first month is on the road,” said Nickel. “So we were excited about being able to host a home tournament because if we didn’t we wouldn’t have been at home until the end of September, which wasn’t exciting to me, especially having a young team.” Wayne State will welcome Slippery Rock, Aquinas, Urbana, and West Liberty State to the Matthaei Athletic Complex for the Warrior Invitational, which will consist of five matches per day. WSU will face Urbana and West Liberty State on August 28. Aquinas, which went 22-13 last season after posting a 5-30 mark in 2007, and Slippery Rock, coming off a 26-12 year and its fourth consecutive NCAA regional appearance, will meet the Warriors on the second day of competition. For the third time in four years, Wayne State will play in the TownePlace Suites Classic at the University of Findlay. Southern Indiana, which advanced to the Great Lakes Valley Conference title game in 2008 and finished eighth in the nation in blocking average (2.43 B/S), and Minnesota Crookston are lined up to be WSU’s opponents on Friday, Sept. 4. On Sept. 5, Wayne State will battle Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) and Missouri-St. Louis. In 2008, UMSL claimed the GLVC West Division title and had a 23-8 record, its first 20-plus win season since 1996. A stretch of five straight GLIAC road dates will include matches at Grand Valley State (Sept. 12) and Northwood (Sept. 15), two of the five GLIAC teams to qualify for the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional. The Lakers, who won both the conference and regional tournaments, advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight a year ago. Wayne State will play four of its next six at home before heading to Lansing for the second annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover. The regular season concludes three weeks later as WSU hosts Hillsdale and Findlay (Nov. 6-7). “It’s a dogfight every weekend once you get into conference play,” said Nickel. However, as Wayne State emerges from an underdog to a contender, it’s a fight for which he and the Warriors should be prepared.

wayne state university warriors The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 37 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a footballonly school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC

were located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affiliation to NCAA Division III. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007, and competes in 18 of the league’s championships. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for the 2008-09 academic year. The GLIAC will move on under new leadership during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships in 20 sports (10 men’s and 10
women’s) while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. Brown oversaw the conference’s latest expansion that will occur on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, will enter the GLIAC. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Executive Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically by school, with Kris Dunbar, Director of Athletics at Lake Superior State, serving as GLIAC President in 2009-10. Dr. Frederick Finks, President of Ashland University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a nonhistorically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. wayne state university warriors August 21 Wayne State was predicted to finish fifth in the South Division in the 2009 GLIAC preseason coaches poll. Grand Valley State and Hillsdale were favored to win the North and South titles, respectively. August 29 In the season opener, Wayne State defeated Merrimack, 3-0, at the CSU Monterey Bay Otter Classic in Seaside, California. Newcomers Sarha Gosselin and Lauren Mallast combined for 23 kills, while Mallast led WSU with 10 blocks and a .474 attack percentage. The Warriors went on to win two of their next three matches on the weekend. September 6 In the final match of the TownePlace Suites Classic at the University of Findlay, WSU blanked former GLIAC member Gannon to improve to 5-3 on the year. Mallast notched 13 kills, eight blocks, and four service aces to lead the Warriors, who recorded four of their first five wins of the season in straight sets. September 16 At the midpoint of a five-match homestand, the Warriors posted their first conference victory of the year, 3-1, over Northwood. WSU snapped a 10-match losing streak against the Timberwolves, earning its first win over NU since Oct. 9, 1998. Setter Katy Westenberg had a productive match with 41 assists, four kills, six digs, four blocks and a service ace. September 20 Wayne State upset then-19th ranked Hillsdale, 3-1, to move into a tie for first place in the division with the Chargers, who had not lost to the Warriors since Nov. 7, 2003. Meg Leong posted a double-double with a season-high 13 kills and 11 digs. September 22 Mallast was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week after totaling 35 kills, 20 blocks, and a .380 hitting percentage in WSU’s three conference victories. September 26 In its first conference road test, Wayne State defeated Tiffin, 3-1, for its fourth straight GLIAC win, a feat last achieved in 1999. Kim Gear hit .588 with 12 kills to cap off a four-match streak of 10+ kills. October 4 On the heels of a home loss to Saginaw Valley State, the Warriors edged Lake Superior State in their second fiveset match of the weekend. Gosselin registered 20 kills, becoming the first Warrior since Miranda Robison in 2006 (25) to reach the 20-kill mark. She also contributed nine digs and two aces and was subsequently named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week. Mallast had 13 kills and a remarkable 14 blocks, the most by any WSU player in this decade. October 11 Despite a skid during which the Warriors dropped four out of five conference matches, the team remained tied with Hillsdale and Northwood for first place in the South Division with five GLIAC matches remaining. 30
October 17 In its opening match at the inaugural Asics GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, Wayne State battled to a 3-2 victory over 17th-ranked Lewis, recovering from a 2-1 deficit to win two straight sets and end the Flyers’ 18-match winning streak. Gosselin eclipsed the 20-kill mark for the third time in the last four matches, finishing with 21 kills along with 14 digs, two blocks and two aces. Westenberg also posted a double-double, as she registered a seasonhigh 50 assists as well as 10 digs. October 18 Wayne State closed out the Crossover with a 3-0 triumph over Drury. Gosselin produced 19 kills and 10 digs for her third straight double-double, finishing with 60 kills and 35 digs on the weekend prior to earning her second GLIAC South Division Player of the Week accolade. Additionally, libero Mayssa Bazzi was named to the All-Tournament Team, having played in all 11 sets and collecting 54 digs with a .926 serve reception percentage. October 31 The Warriors came away from their Halloween showdown against Tiffin with a resounding 3-0 victory at the Matthaei in a match that took just 61 minutes to complete. This was the beginning of a four-match winning streak to close out the regular season. November 1 Wayne State clinched its first berth in the GLIAC Tournament since 2005 with a 3-0 win over Ashland on Senior Day, prior to which WSU honored Bazzi, Gear and Marcie Hill. Gosselin had one of her most productive matches of the season with 18 kills, a .485 hitting percentage, eight digs, four blocks, and two service aces. She subsequently earned her third GLIAC South Division POW award. November 7 A 3-0 result at Findlay gave WSU its third consecutive shutout victory. Candis Jenich had a team-high 10 kills. November 8 Wayne State secured home-court advantage for the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament with a 3-1 win at Hillsdale, ensuring the Warriors and Chargers would meet again at the Matthaei in the opening round. Gosselin led Wayne State with 18 kills, and Jenich posted a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs. The nation’s top blocker, Mallast added nine blocks to her total while also contributing nine kills. Bazzi guided the defensive effort with 23 digs, two shy of her season-high, and Westenberg finished with 46 assists and six blocks. Wayne State’s nine conference victories marked its highest total since the 1999 squad posted a 12-7 GLIAC record.
2008 season timeline November 12 For the first time since 1997, Wayne State advanced past the first round of the GLIAC Tournament after defeating Hillsdale, 3-1. Gosselin guided Wayne State with her fifth 20-kill performance and 10th double-double of the season. The Warriors recorded three straight wins over the Chargers for the first time since 1997 and won 17 matches in a season for the first time since 1998 (2113). In addition, Westenberg became the first Warrior to go over 1,000 assists in a season since Amy Horgan in 1999. November 15 In the tournament semifinals, WSU was on the losing end of a 3-1 result to host Grand Valley State. The first two sets both took extra points to decide, with Grand Valley winning the first (28-26) and Wayne State the second (26-24). However, the nationally fourth-ranked Lakers took over to decisively win the next two (2518, 25-16), secure their 32nd straight home victory and advance to the GLIAC Championship. Gosselin’s double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs set the pace for the Warriors. In their final collegiate matches, Bazzi finished with 19 digs, Hill matched her season-high with 11 digs, and Gear collected nine kills and three blocks. As the All-GLIAC Teams were announced, Bazzi was declared the conference’s Libero of the Year. Gosselin was named to the First Team, while Bazzi and Mallast earned Second Team distinction and Gear was an Honorable Mention selection for the second straight year. November 16 At the conclusion of the GLIAC Tournament, Gosselin was named to GLIAC All-Tournament Team. She led WSU with 37 kills and a .204 hitting percentage. November 24 Three members of the squad received Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region honors in a vote by the region’s sports information directors. Gosselin was named to the All-Region First Team, while Bazzi and Mallast earned Second Team recognition. Wayne State was one of only three schools to have three players earn Daktronics all-region honors, along with Grand Valley State and Indianapolis. November 26 Gosselin, Mallast and Bazzi all received All-Midwest Region accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. December 3 Gosselin was recognized on the Honorable Mention All-America Team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, becoming the third volleyball All-American in school history behind Elisa Joris (2005) and Rachel Parham (1987). December 22 Three Warriors – Katrina Bezak, Leone, and Maureen MacDonald – were named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team. Junior outside hitter Sarha Gosselin was recognized on the Honorable Mention All-America team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, becoming the third volleyball AllAmerican in school history. An All-GLIAC First Team and Daktronics, Inc. All-Region selection in 2008, Gosselin led the GLIAC and ranked 28th in the nation with a 3.68 kills/set average. She totaled 401 kills on the season, becoming the first Warrior to reach 400 kills in 11 years. Gosselin also paced WSU with 35 service aces, ranked second with 259 digs, had 11 double-doubles and reached the 20-kill mark five times.
Senior Mayssa Bazzi, who was named GLIAC Libero of the Year as well as to the All-GLIAC Second Team and two All-Region Teams, finished with 465 digs in 2008, eighth-most in Wayne State history. Her 4.27 digs/set average ranked third in the conference and tied for fifth all-time at WSU. She ended her career in sixth place on Wayne State’s career digs list (1,121).
It was Blues Brothers and Sisters Night at the Matthaei on Oct. 31 as the Warriors hosted the Tiffin Dragons. Wayne State dominated for a 3-0 victory, the first of four straight wins to close out the 2008 regular season.
The Warriors gathered together on their home court just moments before opening their conference tournament quarterfinal match against Hillsdale on Nov. 12. Wayne State defeated the Chargers, 3-1, to advance beyond the opening round - and record three straight wins over HC - for the first time since 1997.
At halftime of the WSU men’s basketball game on Feb. 26, junior middle blocker Lauren Mallast was presented with a plaque from the NCAA by athletic director Rob Fournier. Mallast’s 1.51 blocks/set average led all players in Division II in 2008.
The Warriors donned pink jerseys in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Oct. 4, raising funds and awareness for those battling the disease. The jerseys brought WSU some luck as well, as the Warriors edged the LSSU Lakers in five sets.

The presence at the net of senior Kim Gear (#2) and junior Sarha Gosselin factored heavily into WSU averaging 2.56 blocks/set as a team, second in NCAA Division II only to conference rival Michigan Tech (2.63). Gear, who also totaled 235 kills in 2008 and led the Warriors with a .282 hitting percentage, was the second-leading blocker on the team (98) behind Lauren Mallast and finished her career among the top 20 blockers in school history.

wayne state university warriors The 2009 season will mark the 35th year of varsity women’s volleyball at Wayne State University. Since the program’s inception in 1975, under the direction of head coach Gloria Soluk, WSU has won 596 matches, claimed three conference championships as well as three GLIAC South Division titles, and made two appearances at the NCAA Regional tournament. After posting a combined record of 30-80 over the first four seasons, the 1979 Tartars went 33-15, including an 8-2 conference mark, and won their first of three consecutive GLIAC championships (sharing the 1979 title with Oakland). Kathy Higgins, the program’s all-time leader in career winning percentage (.786), led the 1981 squad to a 34-9 record, which remains the single-season record for victories, and was named GLIAC Coach of the Year. The Tartars went 32-9 the following season but were edged out by Ferris State for the GLIAC title, as the Bulldogs were a perfect 8-0 in league play compared to WSU’s 7-1 mark. Wayne State’s program continued to build through the 1980s as Matt Peck began his 11-year tenure – longest in school history – in 1984. Peck’s teams finished with a winning record eight times, including the 32-6 record of 1986 which remains WSU’s highest single-season winning percentage (.842).

In 1987, the Tartars finished 27-7 and qualified for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the first time ever, falling to conference champion Ferris State in a five-set opening round battle. Nonetheless, Peck was named GLIAC Coach of the Year, and Wayne State had its first volleyball All-American crowned in senior Rachel Parham. Parham, Wayne State’s all-time leader in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and aces who was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, was also selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year in 1987, the only volleyball player in school history to earn the award. As the program rolled on into the 1990s, Wayne State eclipsed the 20-win mark three more times under Peck, including the 1994 season, Peck’s final year at WSU. Behind top hitter Demitria Brooks, who led the team with 501 kills and a then-school record 559 digs her senior year and joined Parham as the only players in school history to reach the 500-kill mark in a single season, the Tartars went 26-10 and qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the second time, losing a first-round match at Northern Michigan. Tim Bearden took over as head coach in 1995 and, as the GLIAC split into two divisions, led Wayne State to three consecutive South Division championships from 1996-98. One season after reaching the consolation final of the GLIAC Tournament in 1997, the team posted a program-best 15-4 league record in 1998. Wayne State finished 21-13 overall that season, but would subsequently endure six straight losing seasons as the program struggled heading into the new millennium. Wayne State was ousted from the 1999 GLIAC Tournament by Grand Valley State in straight sets, and would not return until 2005 in Ernie Gilbert’s second year as head coach. Elisa Joris was the standout on that squad, becoming the second AllAmerican in program history her senior year. She led the nation with a 1.79 blocks/game average, second-best at WSU behind Parham’s 1.88 average in 1987. Last season, the first under Phil Nickel’s direction, the Warriors went 17-12, their best record in a decade, and advanced past the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Lauren Mallast led the nation in blocking average (1.51), and Sarha Gosselin was selected as an All-American after finishing with 401 kills, a league-best 3.86 kills/set average, and 259 digs. 2009 volleyball media guide

About 30 percent of practicing physicians in Michigan, and 43 percent of practicing physicians in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, received all or part of their medical training at Wayne State. 75 percent of the Law School’s graduates live and work in Michigan; 18 percent of judges on the Michigan Court of Appeals and six judges serving in U.S. district courts are Wayne State law alumni. A closer look Nearly 32,000 students attend WSU from 75 of Michigan’s 83 counties. The university’s main campus encompasses 203 acres in the heart of Detroit’s Cultural Center, including 102 buildings of approximately 11 million gross square feet total. Schools are selected based on the quality of their academic programs, institutional data collected by the publisher and the opinions of students. Athletic Academic Services The Wayne State Athletic Department has developed a comprehensive approach to academic services for its student-athletes. The department’s goal is to assist student-athletes in pursuit of their designated course of studies and ultimately to achieve graduation. This objective is facilitated by appropriate academic advising, major selection, tutorial assistance and other life skill development and academic support services. A major goal of athletic academic services is to significantly increase the department’s graduation rate over the next five years and to continually emphasize the success of WSU’s student-athletes in the community. Part of the initiative already has been realized by the department’s annual Spring Academic Recognition Banquet that not only honors student-athletes with a 3.5 or better grade point average, but also those individuals who will graduate that term. The name of each graduate is permanently displayed on a brick as part of the department’s “Wall of Fame.” The recognition is prominently displayed in the main concourse as you enter the Matthaei Athletic Facility Complex. Services Available to Warrior Student-Athletes Academic Monitoring The Department of Athletics participates in the university-wide early alert system in which instructors in lower division classes provide notification to students and their advisors about unsatisfactory progress after the fourth week of classes. In conjunction with the coaching staff, requests for information about class attendance and performance are sent to each instructor. The academic coordinator tracks individual progress, schedules meetings with students as appropriate, and personally contacts instructors as necessary. Counseling/Mentoring The coordinator meets with student-athletes individually and arranges for group meetings/workshops with other support service personnel regarding academic, athletic, career, and/or personal issues (for example, group sessions covering such topics as test-taking skills, time management, learning styles, etc.) The Department of Athletics has collaborative relationships with many other critical units on campus to help provide appropriate support services. Advising/Registration In conjunction with academic advisors in the University Advising Center, the coordinator assists student-athletes with term course planning and registration, including holding special student-athlete Orientation sessions to introduce them to NCAA and GLIAC eligibility requirements and departmental academic policies as well as to Wayne State University’s academic programs, procedures and regulations, and services. The office also works closely with academic advisors in all the university’s schools and colleges to ensure appropriate semester course selection and timely progress towards degree. The office serves as a clearinghouse for information about campus resources and student support services, university forms, enrollment deadlines and institutional academic policies and procedures.

Over 200 student-athletes, faculty and staff attended the annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet held in April 2009. Structured Study In an effort to help ensure the academic success and the development of consistent study patterns of student-athletes, the coordinator organizes supervised study sessions for each team. Tutorial Services, Writing Center, Mathematics Laboratory The university provides free peer tutoring in most subject areas either on a dropin or by-appointment basis. In the event that the Academic Success Center cannot provide tutoring for a specific class, the Department of Athletics has set aside funds to hire individual tutors. The coordinator works with academic department chairs to identify qualified tutors and is always available to arrange special individual or group sessions in a variety of areas. As in all other services, the office works in a proactive manner to provide assistance before academic problems arise.

wayne state university warriors Jason Clark enters his ninth year at Wayne State University and sixth as an Associate Director of Athletics. Clark oversees the operations in the sports of football, baseball, women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s fencing, and men’s and women’s swimming, as well as the University’s intramural program. During his tenure at WSU, Clark has served as tournament director for the College Hockey America (CHA) men’s and women’s tournaments in 2006, the GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championship in 2005, and the GLIAC softball tournament in 2001. Clark came from the Mid-American Conference office where he served as the Director of Administration. Clark’s duties included coordination of all conference meetings and functions, and was responsible for all Conference policies and procedures. Additionally, he served as the staff liaison for field hockey, wrestling, gymnastics and softball. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Clark, who began his professional career at the MAC as a graduate assistant, graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1997. He is married to former WSU softball player Rebecah Pierce and the couple resides in Oak Park with their children, Piercen and Lucy. Robert M. Ackerman was named the 10th dean of Wayne State University Law School in May 2008. Dean Ackerman will also serve as WSU’s Faculty Athletic Representative. Professor Ackerman came to WSU from the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law, where he taught torts, dispute resolution, conflict resolution theory, negotiation and mediation. He also served as chair of several committees and was the director of the Center for Dispute Resolution, the nation’s seventh-ranked law school dispute resolution program. A cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, Ackerman served as dean and professor of law at Willamette University College of Law from July 1996 to May 1999. While dean, the law school experienced a 60 percent increase in financial aid to law students, a revitalization of the alumni organization and annual giving, enhanced visibility of the Center for Dispute Resolution and Law and Government program, and an increase in the diversity of the faculty and student body. Ackerman has held academic appointments at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, the University of Vienna School of Law, the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and Leicester Polytechnic School of Law. He has also been employed by the Denver firm of Holme Roberts & Owen and the Harvard Prison Legal Assistance Project. He has written extensively in the fields of torts, dispute resolution, communitarian theory and civic responsibility, and his scholarship has appeared in a wide variety of high profile publications. His recent essay, “Taking Responsibility,” was a winner of the international Communitarian Essay Contest. His co-authored book (with Robert F. Cochran Jr.) titled “Law and Community: The Case of Torts,” was published early in 2004. Ackerman is an active participant in professional groups related to conflict resolution, and recently completed a term as chair of the AALS Section on Law and Communitarian Studies. A founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders, he has been working on development projects in Tanzania with Penn State’s InterInstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge. 44

Allison Tookes begins her 22nd year overall at Wayne State University and sixth as the Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator. Tookes is primarily responsible for overseeing the volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s tennis and softball programs in the department. Tookes is a member of the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame committee. She also serves on two NCAA Committees - Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee and the NCAA Division II women’s tennis regional ranking committee. The 2009-10 academic year will mark her fifth year on each committee. This is Tookes’ second stint with the Warriors. From 1979-1991, she coached the men’s and women’s tennis programs. She was the first woman to coach a male team in the state of Michigan. Tookes also coached tennis at Eastern Michigan from 1992-1996. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University. Tookes was inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame in 1993. She resides in Ann Arbor, with her husband, Eric, and son, Thomas.

The Wayne State sports medicine department is led by head athletic trainer Michael Chan and assistants Steve Domzalski, Natalie Herter, Josh Priehs and Amanda Riesterer. All five are members of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and provide medical care to the Warrior student-athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for all aspects of the sports medicine program including injury prevention and management, first aid, injury rehabilitation, and drug and alcohol education. Athletic trainers are present at Warrior home and away events to ensure for the health and safety of all student-athletes. During the summer of 2009, the Matthaei athletic training room underwent a major renovation. WSU now has over 1,000 square feet of updated sports medicine space for increased treatment/rehabiliation and storage areas. Other special features include: a new hydrotherapy area with three therapeutic whirlpools, a designated team physician examination office, and additional office space for the sports medicine staff. In addition to a new air-conditioning system for student-athlete comfort, a new aesthetically pleasing entry corridor was created to allow for easier access to the athletic training room.
michael chan Head Athletic Trainer
Michael Chan is in his fourth season as head athletic trainer and eighth season overall at Wayne State University. He is responsible for all aspects of the sports medicine program, including preventative training, first aid, injury management, and rehabilitation. Chan joined the WSU staff in the fall of 2002 as an assistant athletic trainer after working the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Syracuse University while completing his master’s degree in exercise science. Prior to his graduate work, Chan was an intern at MedSport, a University of Michigan Health System sports medicine clinic, located at Domino Farms in Ann Arbor, Mich. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Western Ontario in 1996, and a B.S. in sports medicine from Central Michigan University in 2000. Chan is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Michigan Athletic Trainers Society (MATS), College Athletic Trainers Society (CATS) and the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (GLATA). Chan is also a member of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and is a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist. He was born in Taipei, Taiwan, but grew up in Toronto, Ontario. Chan and his wife, Sora, reside in Wixom.
josh priehs
Assistant Athletic Trainer Josh Priehs is in his second year in 2008 as an assistant athletic trainer at Wayne State University. A former intern at WSU during the 2006-07 season, he returned following a year at Eastern Michigan where he worked as a graduate assistant. Priehs graduated from Central Michigan, where he studied athletic training and earned his health science degree with a minor in exercise science. He also began his graduate studies at EMU before coming back to Wayne State. Priehs previously worked in the Troy school district sports camps as well as St. Joe’s Hospital. Born in Lincoln Park, he currently resides in Sterling Heights. 46
steve domzalski Assistant Athletic Trainer
Steve Domzalski, an employee of the Oakwood Health System, joined the Wayne State staff as an assistant athletic trainer in January 2008. Domzalski came to WSU after spending eight years as the clinical director with Dwight Orthopedic rehabilitation. He earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Eastern Michigan in 1994 and his master’s in physical therapy from WSU in 1999. Domzalski served three years as a volunteer assistant trainer with the WSU athletic department. He was certified as a strength and conditioning specialist in 2001 and received his athletic training certification (ATC) in 2004. He and his wife Lynn live in Grosse Pointe with their son Benjamin.
amanda riesterer Assistant Athletic Trainer
Amanda Riesterer joined the Wayne State University athletic training staff in August of 2009 after spending the previous year at the University of Charleston in West Virginia. While at UC, she taught several ATEP courses and provided medical coverage to the softball team. Her sport responsibilities at WSU will include women’s ice hockey, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. Riesterer earned her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Central Michigan in 2003, and a master’s degree in kinesiology from Michigan State in 2008. Her master’s thesis was titled “Investigating the Utility of Protective Soccer Headbands in Preserving Neurocognitive Function Following an Acute Bout of Soccer Heading.” In between her two degrees, she worked in the Metro Detroit area providing services in the clinic, personal training, and outreach to local high schools. She is a native of Roseville, and resides with her pet Chinchilla named Vinny. 2009 volleyball media guide

strength and conditioning
The Warrior Strength and Conditioning program is responsible for all 16 varsity sports totaling approximately 400 student-athletes. The program strives to maximize every athlete’s potential through the use of safe, effective, and time efficient training protocols with an emphasis on intensity and execution, while minimizing the risk of injury. Warrior student-athletes train out of the Matthaei complex weight room located in the lower level of the Matthaei Athletic Building. This weight room provides student-athletes with over 3,000 sq. feet of work space which includes six new Brute Half Racks by Rogers used to bench, squat, and clean; a variety of plate loaded equipment by MedX, Nautilus and Hammer Strength; two sets of dumbbells, and over 13,000 pounds of weights including both bumper plates and polyurethane Iron Grip plates. The weight room also features a cardio area with equipment by Woodway, Nautilus and Stairmaster. At the completion of their workouts, Warrior studentathletes receive Gatorade and nutrition shakes to aid in their recovery. Head strength coach Paul Harker, along with graduate assistants, directly oversee all aspects of the student-athletes’ workout regimens. A wide variety of training modalities are employed from power lifting and Olympic lifting, to machine based, dumbbell and kettle bell, and strong-man type lifting. A philosophy based on the belief that what is done inside and outside the weight room transfers to the playing surface contributes to the overall attitude of each student-athlete. With each sport having specific demands, the program works year-round with the student-athletes on elevating each player’s success.
paul harker
Strength & Conditioning Coach Paul Harker was named Wayne State’s Strength and Conditioning coach in June 2006 after serving the previous two years as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Michigan State. Harker, who is CSCS certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and SCCC certified through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, directly oversees all of WSU’s 16
varsity sports. A three-year letterwinner for the Spartans, Harker was an honorable mention AllBig Ten selection in 2003, starting in all 13 games while serving as one of four team captains. In addition, he was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection. He also received the Biggie Munn Award as Most Inspirational in 2003 and MSU’s Iron Man Award for his work in the weight room in 2002. Harker graduated in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and received his master’s degree in kinesiology in 2006.
