Four Hoyas Score In Double Figures as Georgetown Defeats Winston-Salem State, 76-32

AKRON, OH – Despite leading midway through the second half of play, the Winston-Salem State University men’s basketball team dropped a 79-67 decision to the University of Akron Zips at Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio on Saturday evening.

Washington, D.C. – Georgetown put four players in double figures and hit more than half its field goals for the third-straight game en route to a 76-32 win over Winston-Salem State in front of 2,228 fans at McDonough Arena Saturday night. It was the third-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 7-3 overall, while the Rams fall to 1-13 overall and have lost ten straight games.

The Rams and Zips battled in the first half as the two teams were never able to establish complete control of the contest as the Zips would hold only a one-field goal lead at the halftime intermission, ahead 37-35. The Rams tied the contest at 45-45 with just over 14 minutes to play as WSSU eventually took the lead in a contest that saw the l3ead change hands eight times. The University of Akron, one of the MAC Conference’s best team would eventually pull away in the late stages of the game as Cedrick Middleton proved to be too much for WSSU as he tallied a game-high 19 points to lead four Zips in double figures. The Rams were led by Curtis Hines’ season-high 20 points as he hit five of his seven three-point field goal attempts to lead all WSSU scorers. Darius Floyd tallied a career-high 18 points in the loss and Darrell Wonge scored in double-digits for the first time in six games as he recorded 14 points. WSSU shot 46.4% from the field in the contest and a season-high 68.8% from behind the three-point arch as the Rams connected on 11 of their 16 three-point field goal attempts. The loss drops the Rams to 1-12 on the season while the Zips improve to 6-1 with the win. The loss is Winston-Salem State University’s ninth consecutive loss and marks the most consecutive losses by a WSSU men’s basketball team since a 15-game streak that came during the 1991-92 season. The win moves the Zips’ win streak to six consecutive games.

The 32 points scored by Winston-Salem State were the fewest allowed by a Georgetown team since a 77-30 win at Grambling during on December 6, 1985. It was the fewest points allowed by the Hoyas under the direction of John Thompson III, topping the previous mark set during a 64-34 win over Boston University on March 16, 2005. The 10-game losing streak for the Rams is the longest losing skid since a 15-game streak during the 1991-92 season. With Georgetown leading by nine points at the half (27-18), Winston-Salem State scored five of the first seven points after intermission and pulled to within 29-23 on a layup from Roy Peake with 17:10 to play in the game. The Hoyas out-scored the Rams 22-0 over a span of 5:56, taking a 51-23 lead on a jumper from sophomore guard Jessie Sapp. During the run, junior guard Tyler Crawford hit a pair of three-pointers, junior center Roy Hibbert hit six shots from the free throw line, freshman forward DaJuan Summers scored five points and Sapp added a three. A free throw from David Moore ended WSSU’s scoreless run at 6:18. The Hoyas scored the next seven points and took a 59-24 lead on a Crawford three-pointer with 7:11 to play. A three-pointer from WinstonSalem State’s Brian Fisher ended a scoreless run of 4:31 and made the score 59-27 with 6:21 to play. A pair of free throws from Darrell Wonge with 5:44 to play were the last points of the game for WSSU. Both teams got off to sluggish starts, missing their first three shots on the first half. Winston-Salem State, however, was first on the board when guard Darius Floyd hit a three-pointer. The Hoyas tied the game on a Hibbert lay-in and took the lead for the first time on an Egerson putback. That was part of an 11-0 GU run over a span of 3:35 that was capped by a three from Crawford. A three from Curtis Hines pulled the Rams to within 11-7 and one from Floyd with 11:24 to play in the half made it 14-10. The Hoyas proceeded to go on a 13-0 run over a span of 7:30, taking a 27-10 lead on an alley-oop dunk from Wallace to Summers. WSSU ended a scoreless stretch of 8:00 on a three-pointer from Floyd with 3:30 to play, making it 27-13. The Rams used an 8-0 run over the final 3:30 and got a bucket from Jamal Durham with three seconds left in the half to make it 27-18. Sapp led the Hoyas with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Summers added 14 points and four boards. Crawford added 12 points and six boards off the bench and Hibbert added 10 points and nine boards. Junior guard Jonathan Wallace added nine points, three boards and three assists. The Rams were led by Darius Floyd who led all Winston-Salem State scorers with 11 points. The Hoyas connected on 56.5 percent of their field goals (26-of-46), 37.5 percent of their three-pointers (9-of-24) and 68.2 percent of their free throws. Georgetown held a 45-19 advantage on the boards, handed out 13 assists and blocked six shots. WSSU shot 20.4 percent from the floor (10-of-49), 27.3 percent from the arc (6-of-22) and 50.0 percent from the line (6-of-12).
