received a lot of feedback from last month’s column. If you missed it, you can check out the online version at wspubs.com. I appreciate ALL the feedback, regardless of which side of the argument you took. Most of the feedback was positive… which isn’t usually the case. My experience has been that people who agree with me usually do so privately, while those who disagree are usually so fuming mad they can’t keep from expressing themselves publicly. I have to admit I kind of get a kick out of it, especially because those offended reveal a lot about themselves by taking such personal offense… “doth protest too much, methinks”… me quoting Shakespeare… hilarious! I had an interesting question posed this past month that kind of caught me off-guard. I was asked by a group, “What (from my perspective) was the biggest change I have seen in the sport since I began publishing in 1995?” I really didn’t have a good answer, partly because I think the question was too broad in scope and partly because I suppose I haven’t really thought about it. Still, it is a good

question, and one that I have since given considerable thought. First, the question, as posed, is too broad. I think there is a great difference in the changes that have taken place between rodeo and its offshoots and team roping/calf roping and barrel racing. Each sector has experienced its own unique changes… some more than others… and those changes are very different in my view. But in the broadest sense, I think the biggest change has to do with a cultural change. I hope for the sake of the sport, this change is one of a pendulous nature… that is, one that has swung cultural thinking in one direction and will someday swing back the other way. That’s the optimistic view, and though I think there is definitely a good probability that things could happen which would return, to some extent, the sport to the popularity and romance levels it once enjoyed, I’m afraid we may have experienced… are experiencing… a “cultural shift.” First, full disclosure….I do not have now, nor have I ever had, a Facebook account. I do have a twitter account, within which I continued on page 49

Green Clinches Third Timed Event Title Cowboy Utilizes 17 Years’ Experience in Championship to Better a Talented Field ith a crack in his voice and tears in his eyes, Daniel Green talked to his wife, Shawnda, who was home in Oakdale, California. “We did it,” he said. “I love you so much. I miss you. I wish you were here to see this.” On Sunday afternoon, Green clinched his third Timed Event Championship title in the 17 years he’s been competing at this unique competition. He finished the rugged 25-run contest with a cumulative time of 313.6 seconds to claim the top prize. In all, he’ll leave the Lazy E Arena with $52,000. “Mission accomplished,” said Green, 40, who also won in 2002 and 2008. “It wasn’t perfect by any means. Many times it’s not, but that’s the Timed Event Championship. It’s adapt, adjust and overcome. It’s the guy that perseveres, and I just kept my mind set. These kids were coming in here and roping fast, and I just kept solid. I’ve been here enough to know.” Green worked through the last of the five-round competition in 76.0 seconds, his slowest round of the weekend. But it secured the coveted title and the $50,000 top prize – he also added $2,000 for finishing eighth in the fastest-round aspect of the contest. Green’s 313.6 was

30.3 seconds faster than the runner-up Paul David Tierney, the son of four-time world champion Paul Tierney from Oral, South Dakota – the youngest of the three Tierneys in the mix earned $25,000. “It feels awesome to win that kind of money,” Paul David Tierney said, explaining that’s the largest check he’s

received in competition. “That’ll make things a lot easier now.” The top timed-event cowboys in rodeo are invited to compete in the challenge, which just concluded its 29th year. Each competes in all five disciplines, team roping-heading, team roping-heeling, tiedown roping, steer wrestling and steer roping. Over the course of the three days, contestants competed 25 times. Money is paid out in aggregate, paying the cowboys with the top eight cumulative scores, and also in the fastest rounds. Trevor Brazile is the only six-time winner in Timed Event Championship history. He placed third in this year’s event, earning $15,000 for that feat. But he also posted the fastest go-round, completed in 44.3 seconds during the third performance to add another $10,000 to his wallet. “Usually if things are going good, I’m not trying to get that,” said Brazile, who has earned the top round prize six times in his career. “If things are going good, then I’m just being steady.” That was the key for Green. Not only did he claim his third title, he was one of three past champions to finish in the top four of this year’s event: Brazile in third,

and five-time titlist K.C. Jones of Burlington, Wyoming, in fourth. “If I beat the course, then not all of them are going to beat me,” Green said. “I’ve never been beat by someone here if I feel like I beat the course. The course is the toughest competition.” The 2013 Timed Event Championship was sponsored by Priefert Ranch & Rodeo Equipment, Pendleton Whisky, Wrangler, American Farmers and Ranchers Insurance, Cross Bar Gallery, Ram Trucks, John Vance Motors, Transwest-Cimarron Trailers, Western Horseman Magazine, R.K. Black Inc., Gist Silversmiths, Spin to Win Magazine, National Saddlery, Hot Heels, Resistol Hats, Stallion Oil, Precision Drilling, Swire Oilfield Services, Rodeo Video, CSI Saddlepads, the Best Western Edmond, and the Fairfield Inn & Suites – Edmond.

New-comer to the Timed Event Championships, Trell Etbauer was at one time leading the Average race. He slipped to 7th when the dust settled with a 25-head total of 364.8 seconds that yielded him $4,500 in cash.

The Timed Event Championship is a true test of the top all-around cowboys in rodeo. Not only must they handle all five disciplines, but they must be able to handle any challenges. That includes being able to ride different horses throughout the competition. Early (round 3) in the five round event, Timed Event Championships first-timers Trell Etbauer of Goodwell, Oklahoma was number one in the Average with Dustin Bird of Cut Bank, Montana right behind him in the number two spot.

Jade Corkill struck the 2013 Timed Event Championships field of ropers with an arena record, a 4.3 second heeling run.

The 17-time PRCA World Champion, Trevor Brazile posted the fastest go-round of this year’s event with a 44.3-second round. It was the second fastest go-round in the 29-year history of the Timed Event Championship, second only to his own record run of 43.5 seconds in 2006. Arena Record Bonus - 2013 was a record braking year as Jade Corkill set the new arena record in the heeling competition with a 4.3 seconds run Though he doesn’t wrestle steers very often, Trevor Brazile posted a fast run in round 3. His 4.0-second steer wrestling run, tied Clayton Hass for the fastest of this year’s event

Trevor Brazile finished third in the aggregate to win $15,000, as well as another $10,000 for the fasted round of the 2013 event.

Two-time and reigning PRCA World Champion header Chad Masters is likely out of the competition for much of this season. Members of the Lazy E Sports medicine crew reported that he suffered a serious knee injury in round 2 in the steer wrestle event.

As the ‘Largest Rough Stock Rodeo Event in the United States’ closed its doors on the 2013 series in Belen, New Mexico, Casper Baca of the Baca Rodeo Company and the man who has been instrumental in this event, as well as so many other rodeo and rough stock events throughout the Southwest was pleased with this years outcome. “It was a good year,” said Baca. “We had more cowboys than last year and it was a solid event.”

The big boys of the sport were the main features each weekend in the bronc and bull riding events. Bareback and saddle bronc riders filled each performance with great rides matched up against some of the best bucking horses in the Southwest. From the wild action in the bareback riding to the classic form of the saddle bronc riders, this years Baca Series was not short on any great bucking horse riding. Series unfolded this year. At the Valencia County Sheriff’s Posse Arena the Baca Rough Stock Series marked the official start for the rodeo season for many cowboys throughout the Southwest. With titles already tucked away for a few and the thrill of rough stock competition alive and well, the Baca Series once again kicked things off in grand style. The only disappointment is the fact that there are many months between the end of this years series and the beginning of the 2014 Baca Rough Stock Series that you can be sure will be back in great form next year!

The Cervi Gets Down and Dirty By Kristen Spinning

T

his year’s Mike Cervi, Jr. Memorial Pro Classic was certainly not a roping for sissies. An ominous sky welcomed cowboys to Casa Grande, AZ on February 20, and when the heavens opened up, it delayed the start, but didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for this prestigious roping. As always, the Cervi lived up to its reputation as an exciting event with the top ropers in the world. A break in the weather enabled the Cervi Pro Am to get underway, but rain quickly returned. Ten amateur headers and heelers roped with top Cervi competitors on the other end through three full rounds. On the headers side, Wayne Hewitt put together the best Average time with partner Cesar De la Cruz. “This is my first buckle win,” said Wayne. “And to rope with Cesar was a dream come true. I knew we had it in the bag.” George Para took home the Buckle for the heeler side roping in his first ever Pro Am with Thomas Richards. In this year’s amateur field, a couple youngsters proved that the next generation of ropers is ready to take on any challenge. Thirteen-yearold Sam Garside and his partner Brock Hanson posted the fastest time in round two with a 6.35. Though it was his first Pro-Am competition, Sam has earned an impressive collection of buckles in his career. “I’ve been roping since I was little,” he said picking up his first Cervi buckle. Sam has his eye on an NFR win down the line. Clay Cherry wasn’t bothered by rain and mud; they just inspired this hot 11-year-old to run

tougher. With pro Bucky Campbell picking up the back end, Clay earned a fastest time buckle in the third round, making his first ever Pro-Am a memorable event. Following the Pro-Am, Cervi producer George Aros delayed the start of the main event by a couple hours to work the arena and let it drain. “The great asset we have here in Casa Grande is that all that deep sand can hold a lot of water and never get slick,” said Aros. “It has a great bottom, and we didn’t have one horse slip the entire day.” Aros made sure everyone knew they could draw out and get a full refund if they didn’t feel it was safe. But in the end, only a handful of teams took him up on that deal. “Everyone ran hard, they didn’t let up and they were using their good horses,” said Aros. Tony Ybarra of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Posse, the organization that helped bring the Cervi to Casa Grande, had fresh sand and a loader brought in to rework the boxes, and that made a huge improvement. After burning a couple steers to test out the conditions, Aros saw fit to set the score a foot and a half shorter than last year. The barrier was set at 16 and one half, with an 18' box. This resulted in some wicked fast times despite the mud. Rain returned at the end of the second of four progressive rounds, but with a total payout of $81,000, everyone was bringing their best game. Despite the rain, and even periods of sleet, diehard fans were prepared to stay, tenting

themselves with tarps. Twenty teams were back for the Short Round. Riley Minor and Justine Davis came in at the 14th spot, but put the pressure on by getting it done in 5.29. It was clear everyone had to go big or go home empty handed. Clay Smith and Will Woodfin, a pair of youngsters from Oklahoma and Texas stunned the crowed with a 5.04, putting them in the lead with only four left to go. The next team took a no time, leaving former World Champion Clay Tryan with two chances to win it with only 0.8 seconds separating the 3rd and 1st times coming back. First he and heeler Jade Corkill posted a 5.73, guaranteeing Clay at least one check as they settled into second, just after Smith and Woodfin. Next, Clay and Travis Graves gave it their best, getting the flag at 5.89. The pair had a nearly half second advantage going in, so that was good enough to put them on top. The

traditional Cervi nail-biter was set up; top team back, Erich Rogers and Cory Petska needed a 6.23 to win it. They knew they couldn’t let up one bit. The pair launched out of the box. Eric caught fast and clean, positioning the steer perfectly for Cory to slip in and finish the deal at 5.76. Cory claimed his 3rd Cervi win. “There’s nothing better than playing in the mud all day,” beamed Cory as the mud-slathered pair posed with George Aros for win pictures. In addition to the coveted Cervi Champion buckle from Gist, they won Running P saddles, a white tailed deer hunt provided by Driftwood Performance Horses, and a check for $11,259 each. Erich commented, “it was a long, cold day, but it was really exciting.” Clay Tryan had a

Outlasting the mud and a field of tough open ropers, Erich Rogers and Cory Petska claimed the title of the Mike Cervi, Jr. Memorial Pro Classic and won $22,594 in cash and a slew of prizes.

$14,803 payday with his 2nd and 4th place wins, Travis Graves picked up $9,349, and Jade Corkill added $5,454 to his wallet. The third place team of Smith and Woodfin were pretty pleased to each head home $7,401 richer. Other prizes included Justin Ostrich boots, Bio Vigor, custom breast collars, Renew Gold, Resistol hats, Mojo Horns horse blankets, and Gordy Aldersen bits. The Cervi Pre-Ropings the day before saw a record number of teams turn out for some hefty payouts. Brock Hanson and Kory Koontz walked away with $4,750 a piece for their top finish in the Open. Jade Corkill had a great time in Casa Grande picking up an additional $3,565 for his second place Open finish with header Chad Masters, and Jade and Clay Tryan took 4th in the Open for another $1,190. The #15 on Tuesday saw Doyce Hoskins and Preston Williams clock the fastest times to win $3,780 each. A #13 was also on the schedule, and Mell Coleman with Mike Clancy caught themselves $3,420 a piece. Four years ago, Cory Petska suggested that Aros could move the Cervi Roping to Casa Grande. That got the ball rolling

and thus the week-long Casa Grande Cowboy and Indian Days was born. The city, guided by the enthusiasm of City Manager Larry Rains, along with Dick Powell and the Pinal County Sheriff’s Posse, saw the tremendous opportunity a big name roping like the Cervi would bring to the area. They built an event around it which now begins with an AllIndian Rodeo, continues with ropings for all levels, features the All-Canadian Maple Leaf Classic and finishes with a crowd pleasing Ranch Rodeo. Despite the weather, the Cervi delivered on all accounts – heart stopping action, supreme professionalism and awesome payouts. Certainly this roping will be remembered by all who were there, for a very long time.

USTRC News Story by Ben Clements

T

eam roping and the USTRC are in full swing for 2013. Big things are happening in the sport again this year and if you are a team roper, you will certainly want to be part of it. The USTRC is going to once again add $1 million of its own money to the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping (NFTR). This was such a huge success last year that the USTRC again wants to give back to its ropers and members. The cash and prize purse of last year’s Finals was just over five million dollars and with the way things are going this year, the payout will exceed that for 2013. The Cinch NFTR will take place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and will run from October 26 through November 3. The roping is the best return on investment of any single team roping event in the world. A team roper can put up an entry fee of $300 and win up to 170 times their money back. No one else offers ropers this kind of return on their

entry fee. The USTRC has also put together an outstanding prizeline for the Cinch NFTR again this year. Team ropers can expect the most awesome and unique team roping awards. Another great addition to this year's team roping line up is that the USTRC will be adding a minimum of $17,500 to the the Gold Plus Division at each of the seven USTRC Regional Finals. That gives ropers another great reason to participate in the USTRC Gold Plus Program in 2013. Speaking of Regional Finals... there are some great USTRC Regional Finals spread across the United States. The first Regional event will take place in Paso Robles, California. The West Coast Regionals is set for June 28-30 and is one you will not want to miss. The next Regional will be the Eastern Regional Finals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and it will be held June 11-14. From there, team ropers can travel to the Southwest Regional Finals in Clovis, New Mexico. The roping action will take place August 1-4 at the Curry County Special Events

Center. The Lonestar Regional Finals will be next and is set to happen in Waco, Texas. The team roping will begin on August 8 and end on the 11. The Northwest Regional Finals will be held in Winnemucca, Nevada on August 23-25. The High Plains Regional Finals and the Southeast Regional Finals will be held on the same weekend in Loveland, Colorado and Tunica, Mississippi respectively, so team ropers can head to the Regional Finals of their choice on Labor Day Weekend. The roping will begin on August 30 and conclude on September 2. As promised, each will be great events and will feature $17,500 in cash added to the Gold Plus Division. The USTRC is all about team roping and team ropers. So make plans to head to some of the great USTRC Sanctioned events scattered throughout the country. They are the best way to gather up USTRC Flex Earnings so you can be sure and attend one of the great Regional Ropings and the Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping. This is going to be a great year, so lets get roping!

RodeoHouston® BP Super Series Championship Ends With A Bang! Champions Ride Away With $50,000

T

he 2013 RodeoHouston BP Super Series Championship culminated Saturday, March 16, with eight champions grinning ear to ear and taking home $50,000, a RodeoHouston buckle and custom made saddle. Tie-Down Roping Fred Whitfield, of Hockley, Texas, knew the time he had to beat as he shot out of the box on his last run at the 2013 RodeoHouston BP Super Series TieDown Roping Championship. Tying the calf in 7.8 seconds, the crowd went wild and Whitfield fed off their energy. His 2013 Super Series winnings totaled $57,000. Bareback Riding Tom McFarland of Bowie, Texas, pulled off a major win with a Shootout Round score of 93. Prior to barreling out of the chute, he learned Virgal, the

bronc he drew from Mo’ Betta Rodeo Company, was one of the rankest horses in bareback riding. Team Roping Justin Davis of Madisonville, Texas, and Clay Cooper of Gardnerville, Nevada, just started roping together this winter, but their success does not show it. In 5.6 seconds, they tied with Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith in the Shootout Round. To end the tie, each rode again in a ride-off; Davis and Cooper came out on top with a 12.1-second run to secure their checks for $50,000 and the RodeoHouston BP Super Series Team Roping Championship title. Saddle Bronc Riding Wade Sundell has been second at RodeoHouston three times prior, but managed a score of 91 in the Shootout Round to clench the Championship title and $62,000. After coming off a recent injury, he impressed with a first place ride in each night of the Super Series he rode.

Steer Wrestling K.C. Jones of Decatur, Texas, bulldogged his way to another saddle and buckle for his collection with a 5.4second run in steer wrestling. As the champion, he earned an accumulated $53,950 from the 2013 RodeoHouston BP Super Series. Barrel Racing Nancy Hunter from Neola, Utah, beat her competition by one-one hundredth of a second, with a final time of 14.40 seconds. Hunter has been at RodeoHouston before, but never made it past the first round. Now, she has the title and $53,000. Bull Riding J.W. Harris grew up around rodeo, watching his dad ride bulls. He found his own passion for the sport and rode it all the way to the bank when he won the BP Super Series Bull Riding Championship and a $56,300 paycheck with an 89-point ride.

31st Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic Gives Away Nearly $1 Million in Cash and Prizes and Sets Event Records Garrett Tonozzi and Dugan Kelly Win 2013 Championship; Tonozzi Sets Event Record for Most Monies Awarded

T

he 31st Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic (GSTRC) set multiple event records this year as an unparalleled 685 teams competed for nearly $1 million in cash and prizes across the two-day event. This year’s competition was held at The Rose Palace Arena in San Antonio, Texas on March 8-9, 2013, and continued in its tradition as the largest open roping event in America. The 2013 competition surpassed the past 30 years’ records in attendance, participation, and earnings with top placing competitor, Garrett Tonozzi (header), taking home over $183,000 in cash. His roping partner, Dugan Kelly (heeler), was awarded $131,060 in cash and both received their own Cavender Chevrolet (Boerne, TX) Duallie, a Strait X-treme horse trailer from Bruton Trailers, a Twister saddle from Tractor Supply, a Resistol

rope bag, and a jacket from Wrangler and Justin. Tonozzi and Kelly placed with a time of 15.58 seconds. Tonozzi also roped with York Gill with the pair placing second with a time of 16.41. It was a rare feat that Tonozzi finished both 1st and 2nd with partners Kelly and Gill, and it has only been done once before in the event’s history. In 2009, Chad Master and Jade Corkill won the event. That year Masters finished 1st and 4th but Corkill’s accomplishment was even greater as he won 1st, 2nd and 6th. The fastest time winners were awarded on Friday night with Nick Sartain and Rich Skelton taking home $1,500 each for a time of 4.44 and Choc Westcott and T.J. Brown taking home $1000 each for a time of 4.55-both from the second rotation. The event, which originated as a small family roping gathering with George and his brother Buddy in 1982, is now one of the most prestigious roping competitions in the country 1\4andV consistently attracts the biggest names in the sport each year.

they were originally looked upon as “city slickers.” The barb did not follow them long as they successfully worked Pete’s granddad’s homestead, becoming stockmen. Then they relocated to Crossfield, Alberta, Canada after Pete’s father saw an advertisement for cheap farmland put out by the Canadian Government at the Oklahoma State Fair. They were looking for Americans willing to give it a try. Canada is where Pete learned to ride bucking horses. He learned well and

Pete Knight First King of the Cowboys ennsylvania - an unlikely birthplace for a world-class bronc rider. However, that is exactly where Charles Peter “Pete” Knight was born on May 5, 1903. He was the last of six children born to William and Katherine Knight of Philadelphia. Known as one of the top bronc riders from the early days of rodeo, historian Willard Porter once wrote that Knight’s fellow cowboys remembered “...there was only one kind of horse that bothered him—the kind that wouldn’t buck!” Rodeo great Herman Linder agreed, “He was the best rider I ever saw because he rode steadier on harder horses. The rougher the mount, the better he rode,” said the first official (1929) All-Around Champion of the World, Earl Thode. Above all however, Knight was known as a great human being. Humble and down to earth - in spite of his legendary status. A friend to all, he had adoring fans and friends across the North American continent. As a young boy, Pete’s family moved from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma where

back then it required ten. Another contest highly remembered was in Cheyenne in 1932. For seven long seconds Pete rode Midnight. Then the horse really turned it on and Pete ended up in the dirt. Friends claimed he had ridden the ten seconds required to win, but the ride was unofficial. There is no mention in the record books of Pete ever besting Midnight, but the stories have grown to legendary status throughout the years. There are even songs and poems written about the duo. In 1936, when Midnight died, riders bought him a monument befitting the champion and placed it over his grave in Colorado. They composed this epitaph for the famous bronc: “Underneath this sod lies a great bucking hoss. There never lived a cowboy he couldn’t toss. His name was Midnight, his coat black as coal. If there’s a hoss heaven, please, God, rest his soul.”

eventually became known as “The King of the Cowboys” - long before Roy Rogers. Popular singer from the day, Wilf Carter, wrote a song naming Pete the King. He became a legend in his own time. Pete’s career started when he entered his hometown rodeo at the age of fifteen, winning second place - no small feat as some of the best Canadian and American bronc riders of the day were entered. This first experience set the stage for many triumphs which followed. By the time he was twenty, he decided on a career as a professional rough stock rider and followed rodeo until his death. An interesting fact about Pete is at least three different times he tried to stay aboard the great bucking horse, Midnight. The records of these rides are hazy, but it was considered a match between the best bronc and bronc rider of the day. In Montreal in 1926, Pete drew Midnight, and managed to remain in the saddle for about eight seconds. Possibly a qualified ride by today’s standards, but

Knight rode in Wild West shows and rodeos across the United States and Canada. One such show he attended was the Boston Garden rodeo in 1936 and this forever wrote his name in rodeo history. He bravely became one of the sixty-one men who signed the famous “strike” document and walked out of performing at that night’s show. The Cowboy Turtle’s Association was eventually formed as a result. It was the predecessor of today’s Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Pete was involved in the fledgling association. Pete won saddle bronc riding World Championships in the Rodeo Association of America (eventually absorbed by the Turtle’s Association) in 1932, ’33, ’35, and ’36. He also won the Prince of Wales Cup three times which was awarded to the rider who won the Canadian and American Championship at Calgary.

He met and married Ida Lee “Babe” Avant of Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1932, taking his new bride on the rodeo trail with him. The couple had a daughter in 1934 named Deanna who was only three

at the time of Pete’s untimely demise. He died from a fatal injury sustained beneath the hooves of a rank, bucking horse named Duster at the Hayward, California rodeo on May 23, 1937. As he stumbled from the arena, he knew he was

hurt. He died in the hospital a little while later from injuries sustained when a broken rib punctured his liver. Pete’s funeral received a tribute from every provincial government in Canada and from more than three quarters of the United States. Pete, being born an American, but spending most of his life with a Canadian address (he lived near Denver, Colorado at the time of his death), and having rodeoed and performed extensively throughout the US and Canada, had an extensive following of fans and friends. It was recorded that tens of thousands mourned his death. Guy Weadick, founder of the Calgary Stampede, called him “the greatest bronc rider of them all,” and, in spite of Knight’s later success, he was still “the same unassuming boy that he had been when first I saw him ride at that little, one-day show.” (Pete’s first rodeo at Crossfield, Alberta in 1918.)

Pete Knight was inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1958 and in 1981 became the first inductee into the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame. In 1977, Crossfield, Alberta started “Pete Knight Day,” which has become an annual event and rodeo. Jim Olson (c) 2013 www.JimOlsonAuthor.com

Wildfire Open to the World Weekend Offers Riches to Ropers By Kendra Santos

R

opers get rich on Wildfire Open to the World Weekend. And that goes for everyone from the sport’s elite who rope for a living to business men and women who work all week. The 15th annual Wildfire Open to the World Weekend, held February 8-10 at the Wildfire Ranch in Salado, Texas, paid out more than $620,000 in cash and one-of-a-kind prizes. Winning the Wildfire is on every roper’s bucket list. In the words of 2013 Wildfire Open to the World Heeling Champ Jade Corkill, coming off of his first world championship in December, “I finally put out the Wildfire!” Corkill won the Wildfire Open to the World—which is a USTRC Priefert Open Tour Event—with his 2012 world championship stage co-star, Chad Masters. They roped six steers in 45.13 seconds, and were promptly presented the

coveted $100,000 cash prize—$100 bills tucked neatly inside Cactus Saddlery Briefcases alongside custom Montana Silversmiths buckles and Resistol Black Gold hats—by Wildfire Producer Billy Pipes. Two wolfy women ropers took the title at this year’s 14th annual Wildfire Ladies Open. Lari Dee Guy and Jimmi Jo Montera roped four in 37.81 seconds to take the $25,000 Ladies Only victory lap, Montana Silversmiths buckles, Cactus Saddlery purses and Charlie 1 Horse hats. Guy got great satisfaction in becoming the first woman to win this one at both ends, which explains why she chose to head here the last two years. She and Jacque Woolman won the Wildfire with Guy on the back side in 2010. The Wildfire #11 Businessman’s Roping is another annual cash cow, and this year delivered a twist in terms of a businessperson champ. Sissy Rieken of Arp, Texas, and Eddie Cole from Branch,

THE

Deep Water Reforms Team Roping Payout!

T

he Deep Water Team Roping inaugural event was March 16-17, 2013, in Clovis, New Mexico at the Curry County Events Center. A unique event format hosted entries set at $200/man enter 2 times and had a 80% payback. The uniqueness came in the payout where ropers got a chance to see the ‘FISH Payout.’ A total of 194 teams came out to rope over the weekend in an #13 and #12 on Saturday and a #11 and #10 on Sunday. The event paid out a total of $62,080 and the ‘FISH payout’ was unveiled. Finally ropers got to see the power of paying equal money throughout the winning teams. In the end, the event producers had countless ropers tell them they’ve never roped in a 47 team roping and had fourth pay almost two thousand a man! The payout did just what they have been promising allowing more winners to win more money

Payout Breakdown #13 roping - 43 teams – $13,760 total payout and $3,440/team paid to 4 holes #12 roping - 44 teams - $14,080 total payout and $3,520/team paid to 4 holes #11 roping - 47 teams - $15,040 total payout and $3,760/team paid to 4 holes #10 roping - 60 teams - $19,200 total payout and $3,840/team paid to 5 holes With the new payout structure in place ropers won big amounts. Five ropers went to the pay window twice. One lucky roper won a total of $3,800 and two ropers won $3,760. It was definitely a family affair for a father and son team who won $3,520 in cash and a where a husband and wife team, along with two other ropers doubled up for a total weekend payout of $3,480. Overall the Deep Water Roping in Clovis had 34 ropers winning at least $1,720. “That’s awesome considering we averaged 48.5 teams per roping!” said producer Michael Fish, who along with his partner Junior Hernandez

came up with this unique payout structure and took it worked together to take it to the ropers. “We went from 43 teams in our first roping of the weekend to 60 in our last roping and the payout just got better from roping to roping. In our #10 the payout got up to 5 teams and still paid $1,920 a man,” commented Fish. “Our ropers were pretty excited about that.” As the roping concluded and word spreads about the awesome payouts, you can bet the Deep Water roping crew will be ready to hand out even more money at their next event. “We are very excited to see the response when we get 90 or 100 teams or more,” said Fish. “The ‘FISH Payout’ will really blow the ropers away!” Producers set up the barrier in Clovis that was met with overwhelming approval expressed by the ropers. It presented a fair start and prevented any instances where the steers could fowl the header and the header, taking out a high number of barrier penalties. Additionally, the crew was professional, making the Deep Water event a big step above your average jackpot roping. Lynette Fish and her crew did awesome in the office and announcing, the chute crew was impeccable and Casey Hatley did a very good job flagging. Looking forward to the next Deep Water roping which is coming up April 20-21 in Artesia, New Mexico, Fish and Hernandez are looking forward to an even bigger turnout of contestants. “We expect our numbers to grow and the team count to rise,” said Fish. “We will be releasing a more extended schedule soon but we do have ropings thru June already scheduled. Included in the upcoming schedule, Deep Water will be hitting central Texas in June. They plan to head to Salado, Texas and the Wild Fire Arena on June 8-9. This is in addition to 6 ropings scheduled in the heart of Texas from June to November. Deep Water will be looking to expand into other territories as well as

they move forward. Fish and Hernandez are actively planning their Finale event as well. Some of the details are still being worked out but as soon as they have a firm plan, they said they would release that information. Deep Water invited ropers to fine them on Facebook and said their website, www.deepwaterteamropings.com will be updated and all pertinent information will be available. “We want to say thanks to all the ropers who attended our first event and showed support to our new payout, the ‘FISH Payout!’” said Fish. “Overall we had a great first event and are very excited moving into the future. We believe the FISH Payout will catch on and ropers everywhere will want to take part in winning more money! In the end we all rope for money and Deep Water allows more ropers to win more money.”

ershberger Performance Sale Company, Jason and Nikki Hershberger, held their eighth annual performance horse sale Saturday, March 2, 2013 in Queen Creek, Arizona at the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Center. Horses were previewed on Friday at 2 p.m. in a jackpot team roping. The jackpot was won by Kim Gillespie riding hip #128, JL Fast Time Zan and Blaine Ketscher, riding hip #120, Fishorcut. It was a tough roping and fun to watch! Horses were previewed again on Saturday at 8 a.m. Horses were demonstrated in the events of roping, cutting, cow horse, reining, and barrels. The sale began at 1 p.m. A professional staff included auctioneer, Joel White; announcer, John Johnson; and bid spotters included Stacy Lee, Mitch Armitage, and Cas Salley. The office was managed by Sara Vaessen Pedigrees and Maynard & Associates Elite

Reams Black Gold was hip #1. Wyatt started off the sale, jumping in the sale ring! The cool black mare sold for $12,000

Auction Services. Performance Equine mobile clinic was available for prepurchase exams. The High-Selling Horse, Hes A Smart Buy, was consigned by Jed Jacobs. Hes A Smart Buy is a five-year-old, Hes A Peptospoonful Bay Roan gelding. He is an awesome heel and cowhorse. He sold for $30,000 to Fred and Marion Holly of Washington. Other top-ten selling horses were consigned by Cody Wensing, Chad Turner, Rick Chayer, Corey Cushing, Brad Lund & Clay Logan for RCJ Cutting Horses, Ryan Von Ahn, Manerd Bird, Kim Gillespie, Brandon Johnson, Victor Aros for Bob Scott, and Jason Hershberger. The top ten horses averaged $19,850 and, in all, 85 horses were sold. Jason is always excited to see good horses from the sale go on to be successful with their new owners. Jason was glad to see the quality of horses that

were brought by consignors from Arizona, California, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Texas, Utah, Montana and Canada. The overall average sale price on the horses sold was $8,782. Thanks to the consignors who brought these quality horses. This year’s Lucky Buyer was Tommy Crowson and Renate Daniels. They took home the Straydog trophy saddle from the raffle drawing at the end of the sale. We were excited to see them take home some great geldings. Good food, beautiful Arizona weather, elite equine facility, shopping, and great horses to watch and bid on made this year’s performance horse sale a success. Hershberger Performance horses would like to thank all who attended. We are grateful to all of our buyers that trust in the quality brought to the Hershberger Performance Horse Sale.

Rodeo Cowboys Support Their Own O E D D N O R OU P R U

L

et it not be said that today’s rodeo athletes can be categorized with any other sport athletes. Sure, they all want to claim rock-star status like pro football, Nascar and basketball stars, but one thing keeps them apart. That one thing is the close camaraderie they share with each other and, much like fallen solders in a battlefield, they come, stand together and support each other when one of their fellow competitors is in need. Such was the case at the Buck Cancer Benefit Rodeo held in

mid-March. The event was produced to benefit one of the state’s top bull riders, Matt Clouser who is in a fight for his life, battling Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. It took a slew of people coming together to pull this event off and not only on the competitor side of things, many others did also. Several producers stepped up to the plate and donated their time and stock to make the event a success. The March 16, one-day event included a full-fledged rodeo at the Valencia Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Belen, New Mexico, as well as a jackpot team roping in the secondary arena, as well as an after party and dance that wrapped up the days event at the Sheriff’s Posse Cafe. Cowboys and cowgirls came from all across the state to compete in the event and show support for Clouser and his family. In the end, the event was still a rodeo and several of today’s top rodeo hands made the trip to the pay window to claim the first place payouts and awards. Winning the bareback riding, was J.R. Chino who posted a 75 point ride for the championship. In the saddle bronc riding a pair of cowboys, Jeb Loney and Darrel Triplett shared the win with matching scores of 75 points. The bull riding was the featured event in

support of Clouser who has tied his name to many bull riding titles over the years. Chon Miranda rose to the occasion topping his bull for 83 points to claim the win. Roping and tying his calf in 9.57seconds, Cort Smith earned the calf roping championship, while Leann Scribner, with a lightning fast run of 2.90 seconds won the breakaway roping. In the barrel racing, Kellie Wade bested the field of clover-leaf pattern racers for the championship. Cooper Wimberly and Cody Garcia got it done fast in the team roping, stopping the clock in 5.05 seconds for the win in the team roping. Congratulations to all of the winners and to every contestant who came to support a great cause and to carry on a tradition of camaraderie that can only be found in the sport of rodeo. Those who supported the event included: Casper Baca Rodeo and Family Montoya Trucking, Demacio Montoya Family Vintage Four Twenty Three Steakhouse Rudy Guzman TransWestern Pipeline Company, Johnston Family Twist a Wish Foundation, Amarillo, TX Weekend Get Away W/A Rodeo Co

he Arizona Junior Rodeo Association (AJRA) was founded in 1966, with the first full year of rodeoing being 1967. The history continued as the association hosted the Wickenburg junior rodeo on March 9 - 10 at the Everett Bowman Rodeo Grounds. With today’s amazing technology and social media, Facebook has

allowed over 100 alumni to reconnect after over 40 years. The AJRA alumni held a 3-day reunion at the recent event which included a Friday night reception. Displays of history and pictures of yesteryear were presented during the AJRA VSA IN HOUSE PROOFrodeo CRX’D performances, and at the Saturday night dinner. The weekend was full of fun and the remembrance of the rich history of rodeo in Arizona!

Competitorial continued from page 4 have tweeted all of about two times… several years ago… an admission I now only embarrassingly acknowledge. I don’t play video games, and I’ve never sent an Instagram. I do have a smartphone, I do receive and send email from it from time to time, and I do send and receive text messages… WHEN NECESSARY. Ok, so now is where I start my rant… What the hell is the matter with people? I realize that for those who are going to disagree, my view will be brushed off as me being old and out-of-touch, but you’re wrong. And, as a matter of fact, you are using that argument to hide the fact that you, and your obsession with pop culture, which you don’t even realize because it’s shoved down your throat CONTINUOUSLY, have been emasculated… and let’s face it… as much as you have allowed yourself to BE emasculated, you can’t be proud of it. Let’s be honest, there is nothing manly about tweeting to your friends that you have an Iphone 5, and then standing in the corner, staring at the screen, and giggling at the responses you get. Look, I see the value in the whole social media/instant connectivity thing, I really do, and in the coming months you will be seeing Western Sports Publishing being fully integrated within the social media model. But like everything else associated with modern, pop culture, people have taken it to excess. And it’s that excess that has resulted in a shift in our culture. It seems nobody wants to do anything that requires something of them… that takes more than few moments. We have become a society of “Right Now,” with value being misplaced on things not in

reality. How many “Facebook” friends you have, how many posts you make, how many twitter followers… Hey, “It’s not REAL!” It seems nobody wants to actually do anything… they all just want to talk about what someone else did. I have adopted a philosophy over the past several years with regard to competing and getting the most out of your efforts, that I think applies here. I drill it into my kids… myself… and anyone else who is passionate about a sport, regardless of what it might be. It is that to effectively get the most out of yourself, you have to forget about the result, and diligently focus and commit yourself to the process. The results are not within our control, but the process involved in achieving those results is 100% within our control. It seems to me our culture has shifted to a place where nobody wants to commit to the process. You can make and lose friends at the push of a button, talk to people without ever exchanging words, play games, yes even compete, in a fictitious environment that seems so real, it has replaced reality. None of it really requires anything of you physically or emotionally… it’s completely hollow. Hey guys… young men… it’s time to put down the electronics, stop living in a pretend world, and commit yourself to doing something real. Those are the kind of men it will take to get the sport revived. And if you’re one of those to buck the current pop culture trend, you’re likely to notice… well… a lowering of your voice as you regain your manhood.

The Bigger the Money the Better the Ride

C

hampionship Bull Riding is nearly halfway through their 2013 season using the new 8-Second Format and it has become very clear that this is a winning format. Only the best in the world can compete in a strenuous three round format and get compensated for it. With $30,000 paid out at every event, the incentive for riders to get on is a huge draw but at the end of the night it really is all about the best man standing. Tuff Hedeman, four-time World Champion and one of the master minds behind the 8-Second Format commented, “Anytime you have a chance to win big money, if you’re human you are naturally going to dig down deep and try a little harder. This is where the difference starts to happen. The cream rises to the top.” So far this year, no less than five world champions from either CBR or

PRCA brackets have competed at each event and the remaining 20 competitors consists of former NFR finalists, and standings leaders within both organizations. 2012 PRCA World Champion Cody Teel and High School Rodeo Champion Cooper Davis are just two of the riders enjoying the bigger payouts of the season. While it is not easy to ride three bulls in a night, it is possible, but talent and will are the key factors. “You don’t get lucky and win at this level, “stated

!

" Please call for immediate assistance www.cor rientebuckle.com cor rientebuckle@aol.com

Tuff, “you win because you're better.” The other half of the equation is the major league bull talent CBR has brought to their events through the bull team competition. Tuff scouts each bull personally and only the best are accepted to participate. “It’s one of the things we do best,” said Tuff. “Not to boast but we have been doing this a long time. We know how to produce a good show and what to look for in bulls.” All in all it’s been a winning combination. Riders are being compensated for when they ride and win and fans are witness to the best product within the arena that there has ever been. One thing is for sure, Championship Bull Riding will continue to revolutionize the bull riding world by creating a product everyone will benefit from.

www.chutehelp.com and on Facebook. Wherever a rodeo has extremely fast times, you will most likely see Cesar de la Cruz at the top. Search “Hail Cesar” on Facebook for the latest Cesar de la Cruz updates and merchandise. Recently two new members were added to the Chute Help Arena Team, the first being an outstanding timed-event king that has qualified for the WNFR three times, who calls Andrews, Texas home. The very rough and rugged terrain makes it a recipe for a great cowboy and rancher. Jo Jo Lemond is Chute Help’s “Iron Man,” and will continue to compete in team roping, calf roping, and steer roping. After coming back from injuries including a stroke in 2009, and still finding himself among the leader boards in multiple events, Jo Jo Lemond is perfect for the Chute Help Arena Team and uses his strength, grit and determination to earn his spot on the team. The latest member Chute Help has added to its Arena Team had his first WNFR qualification last year in 2012. He is a Colorado native, just like Chute Help, but now resides in a different place, Casa Grande, Arizona. Brock Hanson is an All-American cowboy, standing tall and confident, but lets his abilities and talents do the talking. Brock is a very calculated and smart header, only taking risks when necessary and always finding a way to win. You can follow “Brock Hanson” on Facebook and Twitter for road updates, tips and more. Whenever the next rodeo event is in need of superstars, you will find the Chute Help Arena Team making its way to the center stage to give everyone their best. APRIL 2013

ALL-AROUND

pril is upon us and for many it is finally time to begin enjoying the longer days and time spent outside. It is time to leave behind the winter months and begin preparing for the heat that is just around the corner. April is the month of laughter and kicks off with the single day of the year we all get to find our funny bone and welcome in April Fools Day! In fact, and I am sure this was planned, April is National Humor Month. Other than that though, the month ahead of us has no other holidays this year. Easter usually falls in April, but this year, March claimed it. April also incorporates International Guitar Month, Lawn and Garden Month, National Pecan Month and Stress Awareness Month to name a few. On schedule, April gives us a chance to celebrate Earth Day and Administrative Professional Day. Wow, I am not sure how to get any humor out of those, but

looking deeper, there are a few other days this month we can enjoy. Did you know someone along the way has named every day of the year? This month incorporates these days as well; National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day (2nd), Hug a Newsman Day (4th), Go for Broke Day (5th), Draw a Picture of a Bird Day (8th), Eight Track Tape Day (11th), International Moment of Laughter Day (14th), National Stress Awareness Day (16th), Blah, Blah, Blah Day (17th), Look Alike Day (20th), National Jelly Bean Day (22nd), Hug an Australian Day (26th), Kiss Your Mate Day (28th) and National Honesty Day which happens to fall on April 30, the last day of the month. Now these are days I can get behind. I love a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich and will make note to accept hugs from anyone who thinks I am a newsman. I will go for broke trying to draw a picture of a bird, remember the many mornings I woke up to my mothers old country music blaring out of the speakers of that eight-track player, and enjoy the fact that at any moment I can

laugh at the corny stuff only I find amusing. I think every day is stress awareness day and I was really looking forward to blah, blah, blah day until I found out it was made up for us to do all the things people have been nagging us to do. I am not sure how I’m gonna pull off looking like anyone else but it might be fun giving it a try and I can’t wait to give myself a stomach ache by eating a whole bag of jelly beans. I’m going to have to find an Australian because I don’t know any, but when I do, I hope he or she doesn’t hit me when I walk up and give them a big ole hug. Finally, my wife better hide out on the 28th because I will be hunting her down to lay one on her – honestly. As the month wraps up I will ponder on the fact that as we welcomed in the month with laughter, we have to quit with the jokes and surprises to get back to the serious side of life. No wonder we need a national day of stress awareness. Until next month – “Dirt” Keep it under your feet! Ryan Davis

Tuf Cooper Becomes Rodeo’s Youngest Millionaire Tuf Cooper is good with numbers. From memory, he can tell you how much he won at the first rodeo on his PRCA permit ($743.37, Hattiesburg, MS.), how much he won in his first PRCA rodeo as a card holder ($1,023, Huntsville, TX) and how much he got for his first rodeo win ($5,371.03, Logandale, NV). Now he’s got a new milestone to commit to memory. And it’s a big one. On February 22, 2013, Cooper became the youngest cowboy to reach $1 million in career earnings, surpassing that milestone at the San Angelo Rodeo just 22 days after his 23rd birthday. It broke the 20 year old record of 23 years, 9 months, set by ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee Ty Murray during the Fourth of July run in 1993. “That is a very cool thing to be in the same category with Ty Murray at least once in my career, considering all that he has accomplished in the sport,” Cooper said. “It’s amazing. It means a lot to me. I can still remember when I was about 9 years old and it was between him and my dad (Hall of Famer Roy Cooper) for who was going to become the first $2 million cowboy (it was Roy).” Cooper surpassed the $1 million milestone by winning the third round of the tie-down roping in San Angelo, worth $2,981, and, ironically, the first check he has ever won at this rodeo.

McMillen Works Way Back Into Spotlight in Tucson La Fiesta de los Vaqueros has always been one of steer wrestler Casey McMillen’s favorite rodeos, a source of rich memories in the arena and from the 2009 driving trip to Arizona when McMillen and wife Ryanna found out they were going to have a baby. Tucson James McMillen will turn four in October. After two years wrecked by knee and back injuries, McMillen figured

La Fiesta might be just the place to stage his coming back party. Too much good karma for anything to go wrong there was his thinking. If he was really going to test out the hard work of his many doctors, “The Old Pueblo” was the place to do it. Good call. In his first run since surgery for a ruptured disc six months ago, McMillen tied for fifth in a time of 4.5 seconds, then went 5.0 in the second round and won the finals in 4.1 to capture the Average title and tuck away $7,296 in his Redmond, Oregon, bank account. The other champions at this $302,683 rodeo were bareback rider Will Lowe (167 points on two head), team ropers Jake Barnes and Walt Woodard (20.5 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Jeremy Melancon (165 points on two head), tie-down roper Randall Carlisle (44.3 seconds on four head), bull rider Tyler Smith (170 points on two head) and barrel racer Cindy Smith (51.67 seconds on three runs).

Race is On Cody Wright has extended his lead over Luke Branquinho in the race to

become the 20th rodeo cowboy to reach $2 million in career earnings. With three checks in the saddle bronc riding in Tucson and two in San Antonio, Wright moved his career total to $1,991,089, while steer wrestler Branquinho stands at $1,973,021 after collecting two round-win checks in San Antonio.

Brazile Watch After a one-week aberration, 17-time World Champion Trevor Brazile moved back into first place in the All-Around world standings with a lead of nearly $3,000 over last week’s No. 1, Rhen Richard. Brazile managed this despite not even entering the rich San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo steer roping event on February 24. He earned $3,930 in tiedown roping competition in San Antonio and another $1,965 paired with Patrick Smith in the team roping. He did even better at the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo, chalking up $6,652 in the tie-down roping. Brazile is 12th in the tie-down roping world standings, 14th in the steer roping and 38th among team roping headers.

Handmade Buckles and Accessories

$1,275 plus shipping Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs are made from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.

If your name is Haley you’ve got a great chance to win money! For our second race of the year Haley Wolfe came out with a blistering 16.9 as the fastest time of 78 runners in the open. She also swept the 1D division, the youth and “us” seniors are sure glad she’s that division and not ours! By the time you read this our Finals will be over so look for complete results in the next issue of the All-Around. It is shaping up to be another amazing weekend with $10,000 added to the Finals, and $5000+ to open races. With the 10 saddles and a number of other prizes it is sure to be a great time. In fact we are having the First Ever, NM - a Wild 5 barrel race with two people running at the same time…sounds crazy and wild and lots of fun to watch. We’ve gained 15 new members so far this year and are looking forward to great races, April and beyond. Keep up with us at nmnbha.com or Facebook!

The 2013 RodeoHouston BP Super Series Championship culminated on Saturday, March 16, with eight champions grinning ear to ear and taking home $50,000, a RodeoHouston buckle and custom-made saddle. Nancy Hunter from Neola, Utah, beat her competition by one, one hundredth of a second, with a final time of 14.40 seconds. Hunter has been at RodeoHouston before, but never made it past the first round. Now, she has the title and $53,000. “This is the biggest rodeo in the country and the one you hope you get invited to,” she said. “I’m just speechless right now.” While her competition was running, Hunter said she did not watch the screen, just waited for their times to be called out. She and her family appreciate the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ for everything they do, and all the volunteers who make it a success. ave you ever noticed that the overflow crowds for every night’s performance of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo always seem to especially enjoy the team roping event, but if you go to a jackpot or regional roping there are usually more people in the arena than in the stands? And we’re talking about a sport in which the contestants are every bit as good as the football players who play on Sundays. Team roping is lots more fun to watch than baseball or poker, and which looks more thrilling to you, swooping in and catching a steer’s hind feet with a rope while mounted on a fast horse, or sweeping the ice with a broom? Yet millions watch poker on TV and curling during the Olympics, while maybe 20 people are sitting in the stands during your typical roping. One of the more popular sports in America is NASCAR in which cars go round and round real fast until they are stopped because of a wreck. Heck, you can see that on any freeway in this country. Yet the NASCAR drivers are big celebrities with their own tour buses and Lear jets while team ropers are in pawn shops gathering up gas money. The difference is marketing. We should have learned by now from cage fighting and pro wrestling that when it comes to sports in America, it’s all about the show. Ropers deserve an audience as much as bass fishermen and soccer players but there’s so much competition for people’s time that you really have to liven things up if you expect to be able to gouge them for tickets and a cable bill. I have some ideas. Vaqueros and cowboys in the old days roped other animals besides cattle and I think it might spice up team ropings, and introduce an element of surprise, if occasionally a bobcat, wolf or grizzly bear came charging out of the chute instead of a calf. We’ve all seen the boost PBR gave bull riding and, taking a page from their book, team ropers

should have to put up with distractions like music, fireworks and perhaps a pack of misbehaving cow dogs turned loose when it’s their turn to rope. One of the big draws of football or NASCAR is the possibility that someone will get maimed or killed. The occasional lost digit just isn’t enough to satisfy a bloodthirsty public. So, to introduce an element of danger, just think if we could combine team roping with other rodeo events so that the team ropers would have to rope a calf while riding a bucking bull or bronc! A precedence has already been set for combining events like this. Every year in early September in conjunction with the rodeo in Durango, Colorado, there is a Biker Bull Riding and Bikini Contest. These people clearly understand marketing. They know what it takes to draw a crowd and although Jim Shoulders, Gene Rambo and Casey Tibbs would be twirling in their graves, we can’t do business the way it always been done and expect to be on Facebook. What if we instituted a rule that teams of ropers must consist of one male and one female, preferably a model, Playboy Bunny or hot movie actress, and that she must be clad only in a pair of chinks. Now there’s something every guy would pay to see! Granted, I do have an ulterior motive. Team ropers ride GREAT horses and one of the side effects of the success of the USTRC is that good ranch horses cost a lot more now than they used to because aspiring team ropers are bidding them up. Suppose team ropers had to draw like bulldoggers and bronc riders as to which horse in the bucking string they‘d have to rope from in each performance. This would introduce even more suspense and ease the burden of team ropers having to haul their horses from one roping to the next. They could just fly in on their jets like tennis players do and you and I wouldn’t have to pay so much for a good ranch horse. If we institute all of these changes I foresee a day when team ropers will be just like all other pro athletes, with their faces in the tabloids, their marriages in tatters and their bodies in jail, court or rehab.
