COVER PHOTO: Wranglin’ by Craig Beman This original oil on canvas painting is almost life

size, being 48” high and 72” wide. Craig chose the subject matter for this painting by looking over thousands of reference photos to select the one that moved him the most. While at the Cinch Roping Fiesta in San Angelo, Craig captured a photo of Blair Burke on his first calf, which he tied in 8.69, to win the first go. What struck Craig the most about this particular image was the intensity in Blair as he was beginning his flank, and yet was not the customary reflection of the beginning moment of the traditional flanking motion. Bottom line was that this simply seems to capture a poignancy in the sport of calf roping that shows the dynamic struggle between the roper and the calf, in the ultimate desire to compete and win at the highest level. www.craigbemanartwork.com

The new sled allows for safer practice and also allows for the Kaf to “switch.” The Kaf comes off easier when you pitch your slack to either side of the calf. It also makes it easier to remount the Kaf onto the sled. It allows your younger horses to get closer to the Kaf without worry. It is still portable, durable and tough. The Hooey Tuf Kaf is made of a flexy foam rubber to give it that real life-like rope action. The Kaf will make you flank and tie it correctly everytime. It does not allow you to cheat it. BAR H EQUINE

Ryan Motes Bar H Equine builds a complete line of custom and stock saddles including the new Ryan Motes Signature Team Roper, pictured here and designed exclusively by three-time NFR heeler and world-record holder Ryan Motes. A few modifications set this saddle apart, including extrawide fenders, special cutouts in the skirt for better contact with the horse and an easy-access hoof pick holder on the stirrup. With an antique finish, palm tooling, lariat border and oil tanned leather seat, this saddle is not only durable; it is pleasing to the eye. “I took all the things I liked from the saddles I’ve ridden and rolled them into one to get a real sturdy, usingtype of saddle that’s still affordable,” says Motes. “It has the standards I want and I think everybody wants.” Motes is also a fan of the way the saddle fits a variety of horses, and says he’s proud to ride with Bar H – a familyowned company based in Weatherford, Texas. The hardworking folks at Bar H have spent five generations in the livestock business and over a decade in the tack industry. Their tack is available through more than 600 authorized dealers across the U.S. and Canada, as well as several foreign countries.

Rattlesnake Knots, also known as Over/Under Heaving Line Knots, were used by sailors to add weight to the end of ropes for stability. Franciscan monks also used the knot on the end of their rope belts to ensure the rope hung straight and smooth. This ancient technology has been brought to the tack world for the same purposes. Decorative and functional, it securely finishes off your tack. NRSworld.com offers a new line of headstalls, including browband and single ear, and reins featuring the rattlesnake knot. Beaver Fifth Man To Pass $3 Million Mark With his fifth-place finish in the average at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo Feb. 9, Joe Beaver became just the fifth man in rodeo history to surpass $3 million in career earnings. Paired with team roping heeler - and godson - Reno Gonzales, Beaver tied for sixth in the finals and each man earned $3,175 for placing fifth in the average, with a time of 18.4 seconds on three head. “I had no idea I was close to $3 million, and then my good friend Chuck Doebbler called me after the rodeo and told me,” Beaver said. “I quit really

competing (full time) so long ago that it was something that hadn’t crossed my mind anymore. This shouldn’t have taken so long; I was at $2.8 million about six years ago.” Beaver - who was only $1,514 short of the mark entering Fort Worth - joins the exclusive club of Trevor Brazile, Cody Ohl, Fred Whitfield and Billy Etbauer as the only men to make $3 million in PRCA history. Brazile is the only man in history to earn more than $5 million. “That’s a pretty elite group right there,” Beaver said. “That is what makes this so cool, that I join those guys. I’m pretty much done rodeoing, but I still go with Reno, and if it wasn’t

for him, I don’t think I would’ve reached this mark.” Beaver - an eight-time world champion - made $2,191,749, and won five world titles, in tie-down roping. The 48-year-old has made $338,898 in team roping and $34,247 in steer roping. He says not to look for him to make a run at $4 million. “Oh man, no way,” Beaver said with a laugh. “I’m good where I’m at, and I still run rodeo clinics. The TV (commentary) is more my deal nowadays.” Rich Skelton - an eight-time team roping world champion, and 20-time Wrangler NFR qualifier is the man who is the closest to making the group a half-dozen. Skelton currently has $2,654,843 in career earnings.

J

Joe Beaver Junior Roping Association

oe Beaver is thrilled to announce for 2014 the ultimate junior roping experience with the Joe Beaver Junior Roping Association, JBJRA. Since the first Jr. Superstar Roping Easter Weekend in Salado, Joe had a great dream to eventually expand his ropings enough to form a Junior Roping Association. The JBJRA has simple rules and great rewards for its members. JBJRA is open to all breakway and tiedown ropers under the age of 21. Those that qualify for finals will have a chance at $16,000 in total prize money and a world champion gold buckle. Rules are as follows:

1. You must have a membership to JBJRA to qualify and have purchased

before you compete in one of the Big 4 Ropings 2. You must attend 3 out of the 4 JBJRA Ropings 3. Top 10 in standings after the Big 4 along with one random draw from top 40 (total of 11) advance to finals

Yearly fees are $75 per contestant and if you wish to be part of a family plan, it is $75 for the first membership and $50 for each additional. If you are wondering about which ropings are the Big 4 here they are. The first roping of the year will be Easter Weekend. Please note that this roping has moved to Alvarado, Texas. The second roping of the year that helps qualify you is the BB Roping Roundup in Ardmore, Oklahoma Memorial Day Weekend. The third roping is Labor Day Weekend and we are

still hosting this roping in beautiful Stephenville, Texas. The fourth roping is still in the works but we hope to have information for you soon and details finalized. We are shooting for something in late July/early August that is in the Colorado/Wyoming area. If you are interested in becoming a member of JBJRA please visit www.joebeaver.com for you membership application and up-to-date information on the Big 4. We look forward to having you be a part of this once in a lifetime experience and we hope to see you in Alvarado at Easter. DREAM BIG and HAPPY ROPING! y boys were given compound bows for Christmas by a family friend and have spent a few hours shooting at targets. anytime someone wants something for nothing or expects to achieve something big with little or no effort. I don’t care what you do – just be the very best you can be. Competing is not fun to me. Being prepared and competing is what’s fun. Now if I get my BUILT butt BY kicked and I’m prepared, I don’t mind that. But if I haven’t done what it takes to be ready, and then get beat – that’s no fun.

I don’t want my kids to be people who just go enter for fun without expecting the best from themselves. I don’t want them to do anything half way. There’s no reward in that and little selfrespect to be found. My son told me the other day Ithat he wants to be a CRX’D professional basketball player. I told him, “Don’t tell me, show me.” I will support my kids in whatever they choose to pursue,

Genuine Prosperity

T

here was a guy talking about his boss, he said, “I don’t understand why he’s not more successful! He has 30 years experience doing what he does.” Another employee said, “Not really, he only has one year experience, doing the same thing 30 times!” The business world says that if you want to gain wealth, then you have to outsmart others. Many people consider honesty, virtue and moral values as weaknesses if you want to be financially successful. However, gaining riches in and of itself is not the total meaning of a prosperous life. In fact, wealth in and of itself is a very dangerous foundation for a person’s life. During the global financial crisis of 2008 several millionaires committed suicide when their businesses suddenly became bankrupt. Genuine prosperity, based on the word of God, includes not only the accumulation of wealth, but good health, and peace of mind springing from spiritual security in God. The Bible says, “The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it” (Proverbs 10:22). Matthew Henry said, “Wealth is that which is indeed desirable, not having abundance only, but having it, and no sorrow with it, no disquieting care to get and keep it, no vexation of spirit in the enjoyment of it, no tormenting grief for the loss of

it, no guilt contracted by the abuse of it – to have it and to have a heart to take the comfort of it, to do good with it and to serve God with joyfulness and gladness of heart in the use of it.” King Solomon, who ruled in the gold days of prosperity of Israel from 971 B.C. to 931 B.C., wrote the book of Proverbs under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In Proverbs 3, he recorded the secrets of living in good health, success and peace. Set your priority according to God’s word. Prioritize God’s perspective. And, man’s perspective is much different from God’s perspective. Proverbs 3:1 says, “My son, do not forget my teachings, and keep my commands in mind.” The promise of obedience is in Proverbs 3:2, “Because they will bring you long life good years, and peace.” God’s instruction towards others is found in Proverbs 3:3, “Do not let mercy and truth leave you. Fasten them around your neck. Write them on the table of your heart.” Another promise if you will obey is in Proverbs 3:4, “Then you will find favor and much success in the sight of God and humanity.” The arrangement of your priorities today will determine the product of your future.
