Getting released from her day job is thanks to her employer Hutt City Kindergartens who are happy to let her help the community.

“We get about 300 calls a year, I can have weeks without any and then a week with two, it just depends what is happening in the valley,” Nathalie says.

“Because I am daytime turnout for the brigade it is critical because a lot of our guys go over the hill to work.”

Without Nathalie the firetruck can’t roll as she is the driver.

“I am not the only driver but during the day they are not always in the valley and sometimes I am the driver and the officer and

hopefully I have got some crew.”

“I am fully paid, the association pays my wages and when and where I can, I make up the hours,” she says.

There are also a couple of mums from the kindergarten that are firefighters so Nathalie is not the only woman on the team.

The next step is to find someone who can respond to calls and be a nanny at the station so firefighting mums can drop their children off, she says.

“We receive no extra funding

and pay as normal. It’s a good way to support our community.

All the volunteers are trained the same as full-time staff and have to keep their skills level up to do the job.

“I am a grandmother I have two grand-kids and if I can do it other women can,” Nathalie says.

Regulations came into force on 3 September 2020 and set new directions and standards for freshwater management, and Greater Wellington Regional Council is urging farmers, landowners and developers to familiarise themselves with their new provisions.

The Resource Management (National Environment Standards for Freshwater) Regulations create a consistent national baseline for the regulation of a wide range of activities relating to freshwater management.

They reflect the Government’s broader freshwater reforms which raises the bar for the sustainable management of all freshwater and, to the extent they are affected by

freshwater, estuaries and the coastal marine area.

The regulations also more clearly set out regional councils’ duties for ensuring sustainable freshwater management within their regions. This primarily involves controlling land use to maintain and improve water quality and ecosystems in water bodies and coastal water, maintaining the quantity of water in water bodies and coastal water, controlling the taking, use, damming, and diversion of water and controlling the discharge of contaminants.

“Greater Wellington is broadly supportive of the proposals, believing they will ultimately raise the quality of water and protect aquatic environments for the benefit of everyone. But

we also recognise the pressure they may place on rural communities in particular.

“We want to work with rural communities to relieve pressure to the extent we can by providing expert advice and support to people finding their way through the regulations,” says Greater Wellington councillor, Adrienne Staples.

The new rules in force from 3 September focus on wetland protection, barriers to fish passage and farm practices which lead to more intensive land use .

“These regulations apply to activities that pose risk to the health of wetlands, create barriers to fish passage and intensive land uses that undermine freshwater and freshwater ecosystems.

New restrictions have been placed on, among other things, construction, maintenance of infrastructure and services and land use in or within 10 metres of wetlands.

Structures that create barriers to fish passage must be identified across the region and new structures must ensure connectivity.

Tonga language week The theme for Tonga language week is “Fakakoloa ‘o Aotearoa ‘aki ‘a e Lotu Mo’oni” which in English means “Enriching Aotearoa New Zealand through Prayer and Faith”. Each year a different theme is used to promote the richness of the Tonga language and culture with the Tongan community but also all New Zealanders.

Tonga language week is from the 6th of September to the 12th.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry paid a special visit to Wainuiomata’s Pataka Kai to see the team at work and thank them for their efforts in providing for the community.

He says it’s heartening to see community groups like Kokiri stepping up to support the

community during difficult and uncertain times.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on a huge need in our community. In the face of that, people have stepped up and provided support where it has been needed. This has ensured those who need help are able

to get it.”

“What’s also really inspiring is to see the number of committed and passionate volunteers involved to make this work. It’s all about community helping the community, and as Mayor it’s exactly the sort of mahi I’m proud to support.”

Pataka Kai was created out of Covid when it was realised there was a real ongoing need in the community for a food bank to help support those in need not only in difficult times but all the time.

The idea is to now grow the Pataka to be self-sufficient.

That there is so much of it around us and it is very pretty.

State of the art hoop When it comes to the best you can get Wainuiomata’s new basketball hoop is up there with the best.

The court at Wise Park has been fitted with a hoop designed and made by Morris Metal Products Petone.

Local Sam Barret who works at Morris Metal Products helped build the hoop that features lighting around the backboard and hoop for spectacular night playing.

Hutt City councillor Keri Brown describes the new fixture as the Ferrari of hoops.

“It is really something and will be well used,” she says.

Sam worked on the design of the hoop and ran the computer driven CNC Router that cut out the components for the hoop.

“We have Solid Works and used three d modelling and that way we could load test the design before we built it and visualise what it was going to look like before we made it,” Sam says.

Phil Morris who owns the company says the hoop is built from Lloyd’s approved 5083 marine grade aluminium and one of the challenging parts was to fit lights to it.

It will never need to be painted and the elements can do what they like and it won’t deteriorate.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Early start on vegetables: By Wally Richards Many families are having to make sure their dollar stretches as far as it can these days and one of the most important items on your budget will be food.

Some great savings can be made by growing as much as possible of your family’s vegetable needs.

Initially you may have to purchase a few items, but many of these will last for a season or several years.

The advantages are numerous; fresh, nutritious vegetables straight from the garden to the table, better health, some exercise, good savings, an interesting hobby the whole family can share and pride in your achievements.

If you do not have a vegetable garden currently then dig up some lawn in an open sunny area and make one.

If you have no suitable area then grow in containers such as polystyrene boxes, available from wholesale fish outlets or supermarkets.

For those gardeners just starting out, there are four vegetables that are very easy to grow and mature fairly quickly: lettuce (especially non hearting types), spinach, silverbeet and radishes.

All of these can be grown in polystyrene boxes with a few holes in the bottom for drainage using a mix of 80 per cent purchased compost with 20 per cent top soil worked through the compost.

Now for the more advanced gardeners, here are a few things to do for those early crops.

Leeks are a good winter crop and now is the time to start them off from seed.

Your goal is to produce strong young plants about as thick as a ball point pen for planting out in December/ January/ February periods.

If you have no suitable area to grow some vegetables, you can grow them in containers such as polystyrene boxes.

To grow from seed you need a nursery bed in your vegetable garden. Mark out an area a metre long and either a metre or half a metre wide. Dig out the soil to about a spade depth (180mm) putting the removed soil aside.

Find some chook manure and mix half soil and manure to half fill the bed (90mm). An alternative is Yates Dynamic Lifter.

Cut some strips of newspaper a metre long and 50mm wide. Obtain a packet of wallpaper paste and paste one side of a strip.

Now place the leek seeds 30mm apart down the centre of the strip. When completed paste another strip and place this over the first, now seeded strip, and leave to dry.

Once you have prepared sufficient strips for your needs then go to the next stage, which is mowing the lawn.

Layer fresh lawn clippings into nursery bed (about 70mm) along with

a bit more chook manure.

Over this sprinkle some garden lime. Next sieve some of the removed soil over the bed to a depth of about 20mm. Now lay the strips of leek seeds onto this sieved soil and water down lightly with MBL. Sieve a little more soil to just cover the strips and then lightly water again.

The heat from the decomposing lawn clippings will greatly aid germination.

All you need to do is keep the bed moist.

You can further improve your nursery bed by obtaining some lengths of fencing wood 150mm wide. Make a frame of sufficient size to surround the nursery bed.

Before screwing the wood lengths together, paint all surfaces of the wood with a couple of coats of acrylic paint to seal in the chemicals. Screw the frame together and place over the bed.

Now obtain a length of metre wide horticulture plastic film and fix this to one of the long sides of the frame with a slat of wood

and small nails. Stretch the film over the frame and down the other side to the ground.

Using another slat of wood a metre long roll the film around it till it is just over half way up the side of the frame and then staple the slat and plastic film.

This then allows you to cover the frame and nursery bed to retain heat and moisture but allows you to fold back the film on nice sunny days to let the bed breathe.

The young leeks can grow happily till you are ready to lift them and transplant out.

Now is also the time to start germinating seeds of tomatoes, capsicum and egg plants which can be done in small containers such as cell packs in a glasshouse or by placing them inside a polystyrene box with a sheet of glass over the box.

In another month do the same with cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins etc.

Onesie Day support Onesie Day brought out the fun for everyone with staff and children at the Barnardos Early Learning Centre.

“We thought it would be nice for the children and the parents have brought in a koha for it and we had a talk to the children as to why we are doing it,” centre teacher Donna Lammie says.

Onesie Day is Wellington Free Ambulance’s annual appeal to raise money and help keep our emergency ambulance

service free to everyone who needs us. It celebrates us being the only emergency ambulance service for Greater Wellington and Wairarapa and the only ones in New Zealand who are free.

They answer 107,000 calls for help and respond to 58,000 incidents every year.

Onesie Day encourages people to get involved by wearing a onesie, raising money and helping support their local emergency ambulance service.

The New Zealand Extreme Off-Road Championship series kicks into life this coming weekend and it’s perhaps the ideal challenge for those who like a little extra fizz or spark in their lives.

This year’s third annual edition of the four-round Yamaha-sponsored hard enduro competition kicks off at Moonshine, off Bulls Run Road, near Porirua on Sunday, September 13, with round two to follow in the Taungatara Forest, not far from Whangamata, just two weeks later on September 26.

A two-dayer in Hawke’s Bay will push riders to breaking point at round three on October 31 and November 1, with the competition again wrapping up with another double-header weekend, at the Nut Buster hard enduro at Oxford, near Christchurch, on November 14-15.

Only the bold, brave and superbly talented should expect to win an event as tough as this, but that should not deter any accomplished dirt bike rider from giving it a crack.

Only three of the four rounds of the NZ Extreme Off-road Championship are to be counted, with riders discarding their one worst score from the three North Island rounds, while riders hoping to win the series outright should obviously factor in a trip to the Nut Buster final round in the South Island.

Cambridge’s Dylan Yearbury won the inaugural NZ Extreme Off-Road Championship series in 2018, while Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker was top dog in this series last year, and these two men will almost certainly be among the title contenders again this

time around.

Other leading riders such as Canterbury brothers Angus and Hamish Macdonald, Whanganui’s Seth Reardon, New Plymouth’s Tony Parker, Rotorua’s Bradley Lauder, Manawatu’s Paul Whibley, Tokoroa’s Sean Clarke, Hamilton’s Phil Singleton, Helensville’s Tom Buxton, Tokoroa’s Jake Wightman, Oamaru’s Bradley Simpson and Napier’s Mackenzie Wiig, to name a few, could also be expected to threaten for the main trophy this year.

Motorcycling New Zealand enduro commissioner Justin Stevenson said the course for this weekend had been “well-prepared” and was “looking great”.

“It will be very gnarly and challenging,” he said. “We have added rocks to what is already rocky land ... there are tree roots, river beds and steep up-hills and down-hills for the riders to deal with, so it’s, generally-speaking, pretty snotty terrain. If it rains it will be particularly interesting.

“With COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in place, we will be observing social distancing during sign-on and in the pit area. We have extensive management plans in place to avoid large gatherings.

drain and rinse under cold water. Set aside.

Combine sriracha, lime juice, kecap manis and soy in a bowl and set aside.

Heat oil in a wok over medium heat. Cook chicken, stirring occasionally, for 6-7 minutes or until cooked through. Add garlic, toss to combine, then transfer to a heatproof bowl and set aside.

4. Wipe wok clean, then return to high heat. Add eggs and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until just cooked through. Add spring onion, pak choy, cooked noodles and chicken, and sriracha mixture. Cook, tossing, for 2 minutes or until heated through and all ingredients are coated in the sauce. Stir through bean sprouts and divide between serving bowls.

5. Top with fried onions, sambal, if using, chilli and extra spring onion, and serve immediately.

Shooting range clarification In response to a number of calls and some social media activity around the Hutt Valley Shooting Association’s (the Association) recent public comment at the Community Board meeting, Chairperson of the Wainuiomata Community Board Gabriel Tupou would like to clarify some details.

In 2014, the Association sought a lease for the purposes of establishing a shooting range at the old Wainuiomata landfill site on Coast Road which closed in 2012.

Because of the likely public interest in the proposal, the previous Community Board required that proposal to be publicly notified.

After hearing 25 submissions from

various individuals or groups with an interest, the Community Board approved the granting of a lease, in principle, provided the Association obtained a resource consent to deal with any noise or safety issues. The Association has not obtained that resource consent.

A representative of the Association spoke under public comment at the meeting held on Wednesday 26 August, setting out their intention to continue to seek a resource consent and enter into a lease.

Hutt City Council staff are assessing the legalities around the length of time since the lease was granted and whether the proposal needs to go back to the Community Board for reconsideration by law.

Book characters at Arakura School By: Gerald Rillstone To celebrate reinvigorating the Arakura School library students and some teachers dressed up as their favorite book character for the day.

Assistant principal Chanelle Angus says they have put new furniture and books into the library and decided to time the relaunch of the library with book week and book characters.

“We have had a scavenger hunt and a local book author come in and talk

about her books and people from the Wainuiomata Library have come through and it has been heaps of fun for the kids,” Chanelle says.

“Alert level two meant we couldn’t do our tour with whanau but we are doing a virtual tour and putting it online.”

Book week is a grassroots celebration of New Zealand books promoting read New Zealand and buy New Zealand, and is supported by the New Zealand Society of Authors.

Cake sale for hangi

Keep Wainuiomata alive

Thanks to the generosity of whanau tables were creaking under the weight of delicious cakes on sale at Pukeatua School to raise funds for this years Maori Language Week hangi.

The sale has netted $443.50 to go towards food for the pit.

Librarian at the school Wendy Deys says a hangi was held last year and was enjoyed so much as a whanau friendly event it was decided to hold another this year.

“We had a hangi last year and everyone thought it was a great idea and we hadn’t done one for a few years,” Wendy says.

Island rivalry does the trick Sometimes you have to eat a little humble pie.

The North v South game was one of the most entertaining games in recent memory.

A match, which I thought was simply a money grab, was played at high intensity and an even higher skill-set.

Seven lead changes saw the South prevail with a late Will Jordan try 38-35 at an empty Cake Tin in Wellington.

Sunday’s All Blacks squad naming for matches which may never

happen this year, was a good mix of youth and experience.

Super Rugby form was largely rewarded and key areas of concern like lock and No 8 appeared to be addressed, at least for the short to medium term.

There were very few unlucky players, when you pick 35, that should be the case.

One such player though, who must have had a miserable weekend on the couch was Chiefs flanker Lachlan Boshier.

The fetching No 7 was a stand-

out in Super Rugby, pilfering ball at ruck time in a style which reminded me of Josh Kronfeld in the 1990s.

He was the best player on a team which did not win a game all campaign yet could not find a spot in the North team and therefore had his All Black ambitions torpedoed, at least at this point.

Reservations remain over whether Sam Cane’s head, neck and back can hold-up enough to make him a regular captain but with no games on the horizon it’s

largely a moot point.

The squad is full of talented outside backs and Caleb Clarke, the Blues winger and son of former Auckland centre, Eroni Clarke, could be the brightest one of all.

Despite all the pressure on Ian Foster in his new role, he seemed to have satisfied even his harshest critics with the balance of his first squad.

Just when they get to play together for the first time is anyone’s guess.

It will allow a renewed focus on

the national provincial competition which starts this week.

All Blacks galore should be available for their provinces.

It may be strange to see Aaron Smith play for Manawatu or Kieran Read suit up for Counties.

It’s a throwback to the late 90s when the competition was a shining light on the calendar and not used as a stepping-stone for emerging players to earn Super Rugby contracts.

It’s a brave new world, this rugby in 2020.

Wainuiomata tennis fest

Around 250 students from Wainuiomata schools got the chance to have a go at tennis during last weeks Wainuiomata Tennis Club tennis fest.

New head coach Mark Paulik ran the day of fun.

“We get all the local schools to bring down students for a one hour session and traditionally tennis has had a knockout competition for out of school tennis but this was more for all kids interested in giving tennis a go,” Mark says.

All the activities are game based rather than a knockout competition so there are rally competitions, champ of the court, a variation on tennis and baseball.

“It’s a chance for them to give it a go, learn a bit about it and a chance to come down to the club and see what it is like and have a go at the club for free,” he says.

Mark grew up playing at the Wainuiomata club and is currently interim coach at the club.

“The coaching team at the club has done a great job and they have over one hundred and fifty juniors at the club and that is in part because of the community based involvement.”

Mark says he started coaching in his early 20s mostly at a competitive level.

“I have coached some guys that have played for New Zealand and won nationals and I have always had a connection with the Wainuiomata club,” Mark says.
