Every Monday without fail Bianca Thompson makes thirty to fifty school lunches, paid for out of her own pocket, supplying students who have no lunch at Waininuiomata Intermediate and other schools in the valley.

Continued from page 1 It all started back in February when Bianca was outside her house just down the road from the school and heard a mum say to her child that they wouldn’t be able to go to school that day because she didn’t have any lunch for them.

“I ran inside and grabbed my daughters lunch and ran out and gave it to her and she broke down and that’s when I saw a need for it and initiated the lunches from there,” Bianca says.

She gathered up extra food the same as what she would put in her own children’s lunches.

“There are muesli bars, yogurts, chips and I love to bake so I always put some baking in there,” she says.

Mondays are the day Bianca provides the lunches because

from her own experience when children are home over the weekend they can strip the cupboards bare.

“I mainly fund it mostly myself because I can and I like doing it and I have had Jodie Winterburn and Dawn Mckinley help me out a lot by getting my name out their and what I am doing,” she says.

To get some funding for the lunches Bianca would have to be a registered charity in a lot of cases.

“I haven’t gone and got registered because after this year I may not keep on with the lunches as I cannot guarantee that I will have the money to carry on doing them myself,” she says.

Masks to reduce stress A local project in Lower Hutt aims to reduce stress and anxiety experienced by some children by sewing colourful and fun masks and giving them away.

‘Friendly Face’ re-useable face masks will be free to children in Lower Hutt through a new partnership between Common Unity Aotearoa and Hutt City Council.

The masks are made on site at Common Unity in Fairfield by volunteers who will hold sewing bees where the bright, colour-

ful and fun masks are made.

Members of the community will also be able to attend free sewing classes so they can learn how to make their own masks.

Hutt City Council is supporting the project through a $1000 grant from the Community Resilience Fund to assist with the cost of materials and community sewing workshops. Council will also purchase some of the masks for staff and for every purchase, a mask will be donated.

Unity Aotearoa says she started to think about the ways they could help when they heard stories of children at local schools feeling anxious about wearing masks. “I’m really pleased that we’ve partnered with Hutt City Council in this way.”

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says it’s great to see local organisations stepping up in Lower Hutt to ensure people can access face masks.

“As we continue the fight against COVID-19, it’s heartening to see

local groups like Common Unity and Team Naenae Trust making and supplying masks to school children,” he says.

Common Unity is also keen to hear from local businesses that have spare new material which could be donated to the project.

“Part of our kaupapa at Common Unity is to do everything we can to reduce waste. If fabric businesses have spare offcuts of suitable material we would be very pleased to hear from them,” says Julia Milne.

Thankyou Charitable Trust are calling for applications for their micro grants in Wainuiomata and people have until Sunday the 6th of September to apply.

Lani Evans who works for the trust says it was set up by her husband as a social enterprise.

“We did our first grant round in October 2018 and then 2019 and this is the third year and we normally do it in the same place for four years,” Lani says.

Lani says they have around $15,000 to give out and are looking for small groups and people who are doing the grassroots work in the community.

We give grants that are between $100 to $3000 for projects that contribute to community well being, resilience or sustainability,”

she says.

“Although this is the third time we’ve run grant rounds in Wainuiomata, I’ve only had a few applications so far.”

In the past they have provided rat traps for Predator Free Wainuiomata, wet weather gear for Playcentre, they supported road ready drivers licensing, and outdoor tables and chairs for the Pioneer Church in Wainuiomata.

“We supported eight organisations in the first year and fourteen last year and those supported last choose who will get funding this year,” Lani says.

“We have a really simple online application process with four questions we don’t want people to have to spend a lot of time on, it just give us a sense of what they need.”

Activist hoodies promote Te Reo Maori By: Gerald Rillstone Raising the profile of Te Reo Maori is the aim of a group of level one students at Wainuiomata High school.

To do this they have an eye catching design ready to be printed on hoodies which they intend to promote and then sell during te reo Maori week.

“Our action is the revitalisation of te reo Maori and we decided on it because te reo Maori has struggled to be come normalised,” Makarini Beazley

says.

“We are hoping to get the approval to make hoodies to sell to the staff and students at the school.”

Member of the group Shyon Komene says they plan to make a sample first and use it to promote the hoodies.

“Any extra money we make from the sale of the hoodies we will donate to Te Whanau our Maori Unit in the school,” she says.

“Some of the profits will also be used for a shared lunch

with the Kohanga Te Ngahere, Pukeatu.”

They have created a Hei Tiki design to be printed on the hoodies and surrounding it are the words from the school motto “Aspire to Inspire.

“The original design comes from Te Wiki o te reo Maori, a week promoting te reo Maori, and we have changed it a bit.

“We hope to have the hoodies ready for selling in week nine in time for the students to wear and will hopefully cost around $35.00,” Shyon says.

They also intend doing social media interviews during the week of promotion .

“We will go around and interview students who are wearing the hoodies and get their opinions about typical Te Reo Maori and the revitalisation of te reo Maori,” she says.

Maori Language week has been celebrated each year from 1975 and Maori Language week begins on September 14 and commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Maori language petition to parliament.

Over a tonne of beach rubbish Volunteers have been attacking the rubbish at the Turakirae Head seal colony and have cleared away hundreds of kilos of rubbish.

It has been a team effort and clean up crew member Lorraine Shaab says the photos of the collected rubbish paint a thousand words.

“Starting in Jan this year with around 17 trips out to the coast , volunteers have removed over a tonne of rubbish,” Lorraine says.

And she would know as she has kept a running total of 736kg as they weigh the sacks of rubbish collected “If we add the two buoys , Cray pots , tires we have removed over a tonne of junk off the coast,” she says.

“The majority of the rubbish we collect is plastic single use bottles , ghost fishing gear, long line , fishing line, pieces of netting , damaged craypots and whole cray pots and rope,” Lorraine says.

“The majority of this junk we have removed is from the Turakirae car park down to the seal colony. So moving forward we will continue to work our way down the coast , we are just waiting for the seals to move out for summer so we do not disturb them and also so there will be fewer around,” she says.

Step Up for Safe Streets Families and communities are being encouraged to take part in Road Safety Week 2020 (9-15 November), which involves hundreds of communities, schools and organisations running activities to help raise awareness of road safety issues.

The week was postponed from its original date in May due to COVID-19 and will now take place in November, coinciding with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (Sunday 15 November).

This year Road Safety Week, which is coordinated by road safety charity Brake, sponsored by QBE Insurance and supported by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, has the theme Step Up for Safe Streets, focusing on how design-led solutions can prevent people dying or being seriously injured on roads. With the continued impact of COVID-19, Brake is providing resources and activity ideas that can be used in a variety of settings, including at home.

I think children shouldn’t have to wear masks at schools only in public spaces like a train or a suppermarket. The city that is more affected with Covid cases should be more careful about wearing masks more often.

I actually don’t think we need to because Covid dosen’t really affect children because children have stronger immune systems than adults.

I think we should wear them because there are multiple viruses and the masks could protect from other things aswell.

I think children should wear the masks because they could be carrying the virus and be asymptomatic especially in public spaces.

I don’t think kids have to wear them because they don’t know how to put them on properly and adults should wear them because they don’t have as good an immune system as kids.

I think that we shouldn’t have to wear masks at school because they would be very uncomfortable and we would be taking them off alot and especialy for younger children and it would make our voices muffled.

Keen gardeners help out at the Pioneer Church Spring into Allergy Season We are lucky to be surrounded by beautiful green bush in Wainuiomata.

For those with allergies, however, this can mean lots of sneezing, wheezing and feeling lousy.

Here are some simple tips to reduce your allergy symptoms:

Do you think you might be suffering from pollen allergies? Seasonal hay fever is one of the most common types of allergic condition in New Zealand.

Those who are allergic to pollen usually start to display symptoms in their early teens.

• During the day your skin and hair will collect pollen. Having more frequent showers will help wash away the trapped pollen, and reduce your constant exposure.

Typical hay fever symptoms include an itchy runny nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and a tickly and scratchy throat – all of which generally get worse when you go outside! The main culprit is introduced perennial ryegrass, which produces masses of wind-blown pollen from about September right through to February.

Symptoms vary widely, from mild to more debilitating. Asthma, for example, can be triggered or made worse by a pollen allergy. Be aware if this is the case for you or a family member, and get prepared with the recommended medications.

• Avoid the outdoors between 5am and 10am as this is when pollen is released.

• Rinsing your sinus passages with a saline wash can wash away trapped pollen.

• Try to keep your windows closed at night to avoid pollen being blown inside your home.

Since the complete restoration that has taken place at the Pioneer Church on Coast Road, a keen group of gardeners meet there once a month to plant and tend to the large flower beds.

And if time permits, tidy and beautify the graves which no longer have living descendants to do so.

Group member Joyce Lockyer says it is a small very friendly group who would be delighted to have other interested locals join them.

The historic Church sits in Wainuiomata’s oldest graveyard.

Opening services in the Church were held in February of 1866.

The first known burial in the graveyard, was of James Riddle, a local labourer who died on 12

August 1862.

Although originally built as a Methodist place of worship, the Church has always been used for services of other denominations.

This is evidenced by some of the burials in the graveyard, which are of Roman Catholics.

Starting off a new season in the vegetable garden it is important to get things right. Calcium (garden lime) is a very basic mineral that is often overlooked by gardeners.

Kiwi gardeners in the past would dig over their vegetable garden at the beginning of winter after the last crops had been harvested.

The soil would be turned to the depth of one and a half to two spade depths, bringing the subsoil to the surface and then left unbroken as mounds for frosts to work on.

Over these clods of soil a good coating of garden lime would be applied making it look like it had snowed after application.

The idea was to bring up from the subsoil minerals to the surface. Weeds would be buried underneath to compost down and the soil would be exposed to the elements as the lime would be washed in.

In spring these clods would break up with a light touch of the hoe turning the garden into a lovely fine tilth of healthy soil.

The principals of liming our vegetable gardens have not changed even if this practice is too often neglected these days.

I was talking to a keen gardener on the phone this week who explained to me that he was gardening

naturally (without the use of chemicals) and he had felt that the results were not as good as he would have liked.

So last season he gave the garden a good dose of gypsum (calcium & sulphur) and the improvement of the crops was really noticeable. Even his dad (an old, very experienced gardener) remarked that he had finally got things right.

I say fast acting because not all limes are equal in the time frame that they can be of benefit to the soil.

Some garden limes come from lime stone that can take up to 10 years to become soluble and useful in the soil.

That is like putting your money in the bank and having to wait 10 years to get any interest.

On the other hand soft limes start working for you immediately on application.

Lime sweetens the soil as we say which means it lifts the pH to be more alkaline.

NZ soils over t i me become more and more acidic because of our rain fall, these days likely even quicker because of pollution.

All our beneficial friends in the soil require calcium to thrive, as one source

explained it; calcium is like the coal that feeds the furnace, calcium feeds the soil life making for great gardening.

Acidic soil becomes anaerobic and breeds the microbes you do not want, called pathogens or diseases.

The soil has the same principals as our own bodies, if we become acidic inside we can become sick and diseases such as cancers can thrive. If we keep our internal body alkaline then we will be much better off.

Soil pathogens can be suppressed by using Terracin followed by applications of Mycorrcin.

There may be minerals in the soil that plants need but can’t take up because of the lack of calcium.

In plants calcium is part of cell walls and membranes; it controls movement in and out of cells, reacts with waste products and neutralizes toxic materials.

Calcium activates many enzyme systems, it improves microbial activity and it enhances uptake of other nutrients. It is essential for cell division as well as increasing cell density, and improves texture (crunch) of crops.

Calcium is critical for balancing excess nitrogen as well as disease suppression.

Having the correct amount

of calcium in the soil will require less nitrogen.

The calcium will loosen the soil and make more nitrogen available.

Lack of sufficient calcium will result in the following plant disorders; Necrosis at the tips and margins of young leaves, bulb and fruit abnormalities, (such as blossom end rot in tomatoes), deformation of affected leaves, highly branched, short, brown root systems, severe, stunted growth, and general chlorosis.

The important aspect to remember is that calcium is vitally important to the health of your plants and soil.

Every plant needs calcium to grow. Once fixed, calcium is not mobile in the plant.

It is an important constituent of cell walls and can only be supplied in the xylem sap.

Therefore, if the plant runs out of a supply of calcium, it cannot re-mobilize calcium from older tissues.

If transpiration is reduced for any reason, the calcium supply to growing tissues will rapidly become inadequate.

Without adequate amounts of calcium, plants experience a variety of problems as our gardening friend found out at the beginning of this article.

September for Bee Aware Month By: Gerald Rillstone New Zealand’s bees and beekeepers are calling on Kiwis to ‘Bee a Hero’ this September, as the country celebrates Bee Aware Month.

Bee Aware Month is an annual educational campaign organised by Apiculture New Zealand and supported by bee lovers across New Zealand.

Apiculture New Zealand CEO Karin Kos explains there are two key goals of the campaign.

“We want to lift awareness of the critical importance of bees to New Zealand’s environment, food chain and economy, and teach Kiwis some simple actions that everyone can take to improve bee health.”

Wainuiomata beekeeper Wayne Wild and beekeeping friend Gary Hudson have been working with bees for a number of years and say the more awareness of bees and how they work the better.

“Bees do fly up to five kilometers when they are collecting so just because there is a hive just

down the road doesn’t mean those bees are going to sting you,” Gary says.

Gary has had up to 56 hives at one time but has reduced the number recently.

Wayne says one of the myths about honey is you need manuka honey to heal a scratch but any bush honey will do the same he says.

Both Wayne and Gary are not fans of honey but say their honey is raw honey not processed like the honey from supermarkets.

“They filter it through such high filtration to take stuff out of it even the pollen is gone and there goes the flavor as well and it is heat treated so it won’t go hard which is natural,” Gary says.

Ms Kos also encourages Kiwis to support everyday bee heroes, our beekeepers.

“Since the advent of varroa, beekeepers’ have become essential to the survival of honey bees. Our beekeepers work hard to care for and protect our bees. Buying local honey, especially Gary Hudson and Wayne Wild with some of natures gold raw honey. With no crowd, in an empty Cake Tin on Saturday, one has to wonder exactly what the motivation is for still playing the game?

The marketing for the game will suggest it’s about North and South Island bragging rights, but it’s not.

The spin masters will say it is an All Black trial, but it’s not.

The theory is that it’s good for the public to see live sport, but it’s not.

You see, nobody cares about about the North Island or South Island bragging rights.

It’s tough enough to work out why some players are playing for one side and not the other as it is.

It’s not an All Blacks trial because we don’t need one for two reasons.

Live sport can give the public a boost, certainly during these Coronavirus times, but I think the ultimate reason the game is going ahead is money.
