Executive Summary

Conceptual rendering of new recreation center and fieldhouse Western State College athletics and its booster club, the Mountaineer Athletic Association, have a long and richly successful tradition. The recent years have been especially successful as demonstrated by the past 17 years. Since 1994, Mountaineer teams have finished in the Top 10 nationally 86 times, including ten national team championships and 28 RMAC team championships. The Mountaineers are one of two current and active NCAA Division II institutions to place in the Top 44 of the Learfield Sports Directors Cup in all 15 years of the all-sport competition, including three top five finishes. The Mountaineer student-athletes maintain among the best graduation rates at the NCAA Division II level. The Mountaineers have just concluded another successful fundraising year. In July 1998, the department moved into the 40,000-square foot addition and renovated Paul Wright Gymnasium. In September 1999, the Tracy Borah Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame Room was dedicated and in 2001 the physician’s exam room in the training room was dedicated. In 2005, Western State athletics privately funded a new track and a new roof, floor and baskets in Paul Wright Gym. A $5 million Capital Campaign for football is underway and similar campaigns are in the plans. A new $30 million fieldhouse and recreation center, complete with a six-lane, 200-meter competition track, was passed by a student vote and is scheduled for completion late 2013 or early 2014. Plans are also being developed for a new press box and team rooms at Mountaineer Bowl. These truly are exciting times in Mountaineer Athletics! In 1989, and again in 1996, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference underwent extensive expansion. The 1989 expansion included the move from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1992. With 14 schools now a member of the RMAC, the conference is one of the largest collegiate athletic conferences in the nation. Western State is among the smallest collegiate institutions in the RMAC and NCAA Division II and located in the smallest community. The needs that this expansion brought, combined with gender equity adjustment, inflation, institutional cuts and state funding cuts in higher education have created great needs for significant increases in external funding. Mountaineer Athletics has increased its pace of fundraising in a big way over the past 16 years. We are now entering into Corporate Partnerships for our 16th straight year. This is an area that is beyond the philanthropic realm of fundraising. The goal of the corporate partnerships is to provide a vehicle for a business, organization or corporation to receive benefits in return for their investment. This return should be at least equivalent to the amount of the initial investment. The corporation should see Mountaineer athletics as a vehicle for their marketing and advertising needs. Some of the types of return include, but are not limited to: moving your product(s) “meter” through advertising and marketing, entertaining clients, employee motivation and benefits, CEO benefits, and association with a successful and visible organization. Your organization can choose among four primary options ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. The primary use of this money is to go toward scholarships for student-athletes. We believe there is a niche at one of these levels for you and your place of business. There are several creative means by which we can mutually discuss establishing a relationship with you and your business that we are confident are mutually beneficial. We hope we can present this opportunity for you for the 2011-12 year. We are excited to have you and your business be a part of the Mountaineer Magic!

What is the Mountaineer Athletic Association? The Mountaineer Athletic Association was known as the Mountaineer Century Club until 1995. This Association is the athletic booster club for Western State College athletics in Gunnison, Colo. Western State is a four-year liberal arts college with an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students. The athletic mascot is the Mountaineers. The MAA operates under the umbrella of the Western State College Foundation, which is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. The Mountaineers compete at the NCAA Division II level and are members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Over the years, the Mountaineers have enjoyed a great deal of success and a rich tradition in many sports. Through the last 17 years, Western State has won 28 RMAC championships. Eighty-six teams have placed in the top 10 nationally since 1994. The men’s cross country team has won more national championships in Division II than any other school, with titles in 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006. The women won national championships in 2000, 2001, 2002. Additionally, the Mountaineers have placed in the Top 44 of the Learfield Sports Directors Cup in all 16 years of the allsport competition cup. Perhaps more impressive are the graduation rates of Mountaineer student-athletes, which rank among the nation’s best. This is not bad for a small, underfunded athletic program in the mountains. In 1989 the RMAC underwent significant expansion. Beginning July 1, 1996, the RMAC expanded again bringing the membership to 14 institutions. Most of these institutions are substantially larger and funded at a higher level. In addition, most of these institutions are located in much larger communities which provide them with a great deal of fundraising ability. The Western State College athletic department is committed to maintaining and building our athletic programs. We are committed to consistently competing at the top level of the RMAC and high levels of national competition. In order to be successful, we must significantly raise our level of scholarships for student-athletes immediately. Therefore, the Athletic Department’s fundraising efforts have been increasing rapidly over the past 17 years. We have been successful in organizing several events that provide a vehicle for establishing relationships with people, business and corporations that are mutually beneficial. This is truly an exciting time in the history of Mountaineer athletics because we feel the number and magnitude of these relationships will grow tremendously in the near future.

Exciting Times in Mountaineer Athletics! In 1989, the RMAC expanded and began the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, which was completed in 1992. This brought with it the Division II full funding concepts. In 1996, the RMAC expanded again to bring the total number of colleges and universities in 14. The current overall competitive achievements of the athletic department are at an all-time high. The current fund-raising efforts, results and events are growing at a tremendous rate. Western State College broke ground in the spring of 1997 for a 40,000 square foot expansion and renovation of Paul Wright Gym in an effort to upgrade our present facilities. The athletic department occupied the new facility in July 1998. Dedicated the Tracy Borah Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame Room in September 1999. Dedicated a new track in Mountaineer Bowl in September 2005. New floor, baskets and roof for Paul Wright Gym in 2008. Passage of the student facility fee this spring, which calls for the construction of a $30 million recreation center and fieldhouse with a six-lane, 200-meter competition track. The completion date for this project is late 2013 or early 2014. A net Economic Impact Student of the Western State athletic programs on the local community is estimated to be at least $15 million annually.

Major Causes of Need The move to NCAA Division II and the expansions of the RMAC in 1989 and 1996 has placed a tremendous need on our athletic programs to dramatically increase funding in order to stay competitive. This funding increase in most profoundly needed in the following areas: Scholarships for student-athletes (currently two-thirds of the average RMAC school) Recruiting funds for student-athletes Facility upgrades (even beyond the 1990s Wright project) Support staff Gender equity adjustments that minimize the impact on current male programs and maximize impacts on our current female programs The current funding trend in higher education is “tight, which, in turn, provides a need for out athletic department to cultivate funding from independent sources.
