Welcome to the UNESCO Young Ambassadors Programme 2017 In 2012 Norwich was named England’s first UNESCO City of Literature, a decision based on its rich and varied literary heritage. As an organisation, UNESCO is committed to protecting what is precious and valuable from our past but also to supporting and nurturing the best for our future. This programme is all about doing just that. As participants on this programme you will receive training, mentoring and amazing opportunities. Taking part in this programme, you can expect to gain: • Top quality training and support from professionals in their fields • Exclusive volunteer and work experience opportunities • Bronze Arts Award (optional). Young Ambassador Projects and Opportunities Creative Consultation Committee Ongoing Be part of a team reviewing WCN’s creative writing workshops and resources. Give your opinions and come up with ideas for new projects. FLY internship February - July Learn what it takes to set up, run and promote a literary festival! Fantastic training opportunities for 14 - 18 year olds with UEA’s Festival of Literature for Young people (FLY) team! YNAF internship July Join the team at Young Norfolk Arts Festival (YNAF) and learn how a large, cross-arts festival runs, communicates and engages with audiences around the region. For ages 16 - 18 years. City of Literature at Norfolk & Norwich Festival May Receive complimentary tickets to attend literary events, interview prominent authors and write an
arts review for our website. Bright Young Reads July - September Get involved in a reading project with a difference! Over the summer, WCN staff will draw up a list of brand new books from brilliant writers you may not have heard of. Read the books, review them, pass them to a friend (get them to review them) and write your own creative responses inspired by them – then have your work published on our website. UNESCO Summer School August Love good drama? Hooked on Game of Thrones? Breaking Bad? The Crown? Get writing your City of Literature themed drama with expert professional tuition. Scholarship places available. Noirwich Crime Writing Festival 14 - 18 September A great opportunity to experience one of the UK’s major crime writing festivals. Interview top authors in the genre and write up your thoughts for our website.
Young Ambassadors 2017 Bronze Arts Award Project Promoting and Running the Young Norfolk Writing Competition One of the most important and interesting areas of the arts is in the communication and organisation of events and competitions. This year,Young Ambassadors will get an exclusive opportunity to take a leading role in promoting and organising the Young Norfolk Writing Competition. By taking part in this project you will gain: • Training from a top communications professional • Guidance in designing your own promotions strategy • Support in delivering your ideas in your school communities • An opportunity to inform the outcome of the most prestigious writing competitions for young people in East Anglia • A place on an exclusive live-literature performance workshop with a superb professional performer • The chance to help set up and run an awards ceremony • Arts Award mentorship and a Bronze Arts Award.
What to do next? (1) Sign up to the project, which commits you to two training days, one planning day and attendance at the performance workshop and awards event on Saturday 8 July 2017. These will all take place at venues in Norwich. These will not be during school hours and you will not be asked to work during school hours.You will be advised in good time about the exact venue and times. You will also be told what the days will involve. (2) Attend the Promotions Training Day on Saturday 11 February, 10am - 4pm, at WCN, Dragon Hall. During this day, you will learn the tricks behind a successful promotions campaign and work with your peers to design a campaign for your own school community. (3) Deliver the campaign in your school between February and May. (4) Attend the Long Listing day on Saturday 10 June (venue TBC) and be part of the team that selects the top 20 entries for the next stage of the competition. Come prepared to read lots of original writing and to fight for your favourites! (5) Attend an event planning session on Saturday 1 July, 10am - 2pm (venue TBC). During this day you will learn the art of hosting a great event with WCN’s very own operations specialist. (6) Attend the performance workshop on Saturday 8 July, 12 - 4pm, with special guest Matt Windle (aka the poet with punch). (7) Later that day, dust down your glad rags and help host the Young Norfolk Writing Competition awards event where winners will perform their work (with your help) and receive prizes. (8) Submit your project portfolio for your Arts Award!
