The Gallery at WREN is proudly sponsored by the Adair Country Inn & Restaurant.

Nomadic Threads “Nomadic Threads” is an ode to the natural landscapes and enduring heritage depicted in the visually sublime documentary “The Eagle Huntress” (which chronicles Aisholpan, a 13-year-old nomadic Mongolian girl who trains to become the first female eagle hunter in 12 generations of her Kazakh family). Through a globally rich palette of textiles and photographs, visitors to the Gallery at WREN will take part in a luminous journey across the soaring expanses of outer Mongolia. “Nomadic Threads” features the work of two WREN member artists, Doug Weisman and Doug Masury.

The Adair Country Inn & Restaurant is the official sponsor of the Gallery at WREN.

As part of the ongoing “Arts at the Adair” initiative, select pieces from the “COLOR!” exhibition will also be on display in the sitting room of the Adair Country Inn & Restaurant in Bethlehem throughout the months of May and June. WREN’s partnership encourages guests of the Adair to connect with the local arts community while also enjoying the amenities of a landmark historic inn. Visitors to the Adair, as well as the Gallery at WREN, are invited to explore both locations during their tour of the “COLOR!” exhibition.

Photographer Doug Weisman has worked in the television production industry for over forty years, and his gift for capturing compelling characters through his camera lens is evident in every print and shutter snap. After a viewing of “The Eagle Huntress” several years ago, Weisman and his wife Julie were compelled to make their own pilgrimage across Mongolia to attend The Golden Eagle Festival, and capture the landscapes and locals along the way. The resulting photographs are a testament to long, evocative travels into the unknown. The work of fiber artist (and juried League of NH Craftsmen member) Doug Masury serves as a perfect complement to Weisman’s portfolio. As a self-taught fiber artist, Masury has spent the last three decades capturing his passion for travel, music, color, and pattern through his woven work. Pieces range in scale from miniature to larger than life, and every work is imbued with a rich history of hand-painted fibers and hand-gathered beads, porcelain, and wood.

Doug Masury

For Doug Masury, “life is filled with subtle nuances of patterns and colors. I have worked at translating my vision by hand painting the yarns to create the subtlety of nature we see every day in our lives in everything we experience. It is with my creations I translate my world as I see it, taking my dreams and vision into another reality.” Masury’s palette is one of earthy tonality, of physical journeys transformed into color and pattern through warp and weft.

Since the early 1990’s, Masury has captured his passion for music, Batik, photography, and nature through his textile work. Masury is a self-taught fiber artist. His work is informed by unbridled authenticity and an enduring focus on color and technique. Each piece is the result of years collecting and traveling, with handpicked beads, glazed porcelain clay, and salvaged wood serve as global punctuations to his refined weaving. Masury’s work can range from intricate, intimate framed pieces to large-scale works hanging well over four feet long. All of his works are hand-painted with various dyes, resulting in singular, inimitably spectacular woven works.

Doug Weisman For over 40 years Doug Weisman worked in the television production industry as a producer, director, and director of photography. He had the opportunity to document major domestic and international events as they unfolded and created compelling stories for many of the world’s television news and documentary networks. His ability to capture unique imagery keeps him behind the lens of his camera. “My inspiration for traveling in Western Mongolia came from the documentary film “The Eagle Huntress.” When we saw the barren, unspoiled landscape, the nomads living as they have for hundreds of years, and the not yet commercialized Golden Eagle Festival, we knew we had to explore that region.

The people are proud and bold, living a spartan lifestyle which takes them to the plains in summer and the mountains in winter. They were welcoming to Westerners, opened up their cabins to wayward travelers, and shared their love of cattle grazing, horse riding, and raising Golden eagles. Although it is an extremely harsh environment, it is magnificent in its vastness. Wide open spaces lead to majestic mountains. There are no fences and grazing happens everywhere there is grass. Most herding happens on horseback, though some younger nomads now use motorcycles. Only then does one hear mechanized vehicles on the landscape. The unimproved road system between towns must be navigated by locals or one would be forever lost. The colors of the landscape are muted earth tones, accented by brightly woven, handmade clothing. The eagle hunters make their outerwear from small, furry animals— marmot, rabbit, and fox—captured by their trained eagles. They weave in bold, primary colors: rugs, wall hangings, and ceremonial garments.

Mongolia has a land mass one-third the size of the US, and a population of 3.2 million. The nomadic lifestyle is enjoyed by over 1.5 million people, mostly in Western Mongolia, 1200 miles from the population center of the capital, Ulaanbaatar.” Weisman lives in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. You will often find him hiking with his wife Julie and their three Siberian huskies, cycling the backroads, or photographing waterfalls.
