The Unforgetable Terry Hallard
being admitted into the hospital. th Terry was born at Lancing on 13 December 1939. His family were evacuated to Oxford during the war, where his father worked on developing engines for military aircraft, returning to Lancing at the cessation of the conflict. Terry went on to attend Worthing High School for boys where he showed an interest in athletics and mathematics. He also had a particular interest in aircraft and modelling. At the age of seventeen Terry became an aircraft apprentice with De Havilland at Portsmouth. Terry was particularly proud that he had designed a tiny part of the De Havilland DH 110 Sea Vixen. In later years when journeying to Chichester he would often divert to the Tangmere Museum in order to pay homage to the Sea Vixen.

In 1965 Terry became a teacher at Longhill School in Brighton, teaching Metalwork and technical drawing. Terry’s wife to be Margaret arrived at Longhill In September 1966 and they married in October 1967. They had two sons Philip and Nick. Terry remained a skilled, innovative metalworker and had even altered his bowl extension arm; his hallmark, to give the device more stability. Over the past year Terry was apparently troubled by arthritis and the lack of mobility, but still struggled down to the bowls club for some exercise to keep his weight down, hoping for knee surgery. He enjoyed the male camaraderie and humour at the bowls club and was grateful for the help that he was given. Seemingly Terry had only been playing bowls two days before he died. After playing on the Friday before he died, he arrived home so pleased that he had bowled three woods that came to rest within three inches of the jack and had been cheered by other members. Terry had been a member of Pavilion for around twenty years or thereabouts and his death came as a shock. His presence at the club will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Terry’s wife Margaret, sons Philip, Nick and their families at this sad and difficult time.

PAVILION POST Touring Club Bembridge 2020 On 24th a contingent of pavilion touring club members, mustering nine rinks, undertook the annual pilgrimage to Warner Bembridge Coast Hotel for the popular four day bowls bonanza with a prize of £1,000 on the table for the winners of the tournament. Despite a grey and dismal day the outward journey went without any significant problems this year with a smooth ferry crossing. In all there were sixty bowlers participating in the competition, which was well down on previous years, making fifteen rinks competing this year coming from as far afield as East Kent, South Hams, Devon and London. A number of the opposition were also regulars to this annual event.
It shouldn’t be overlooked that a team of Pavilion elders, namely Les Marple, Morris Hartley, Graham Foreshaw and Ted Jessop beat the eventual winners in a preliminary round by a thirteen shot difference. WELL DONE! to them. Another brilliant tour with excellent accommodation, excellent food and entertainment delivered by friendly staff throughout, that really passed all too quickly. On behalf of the tourists a big thank you to Tim and Tricia Baldwin for organising things, not forgetting Barry Ledger’s input.
The Bembridge Phantom About 0345 on Wednesday a female guest was wakened by someone tapping her patio door and upon opening the curtains she encountered a man dressed only in underpants asking to be let in. She took pity on him as it was extremely cold outside but sensibly
assured me that he was clothed and didn’t draw any attention to himself.
Editor Refurbishments Ladies Toilets The ladies toilet area by rink 1 is going to be refurbished, with the work probably beginning in May. This will involve some new flooring, new basins and toilets together with the fitting of new cubicle and vanity units. The plumbing will also be overhauled so the long term problem which has existed with one of the toilets will finally be solved. Great news!

The tournament started with the preliminary rounds on the Tuesday into Wednesday, after which four Pavilion teams progressed to Wednesday’s quarter final, with Alan Vidler’s team facing that of Kevin Batchelor, thereby assuring that at least one team from Pavilion reached the semi-finals. The final saw Keith Cooper’s team of Linda Chant, Alan Page and Graham Farley, the elder, facing a team from South Hams, South Devon, the eventual winners of the £1,000 first prize. The final rounds of the tournament produced some nail biting, competitive bowling.

The funny side of this was the lady concerned was closely looking at mens’ facial features the following morning to see if she could recognise the culprit? How many times have you heard ‘Of course he has got straight bowls’ ‘The bowls the others are playing are straight bowls’ The reality is that Thomas Taylor has the ‘standard’ or ‘master bowl’ This bowl has been agreed to be the ‘master’ bowl. As a rough guide, this master bowl will curve approximately 1.8m from the centre line, when it passes its widest point (the shoulder) on a draw shot. As no bowl can be registered if it has a narrower bias than the master, it can be seen that straight bowls are a myth! Where it would seem people mistake the true bias of the bowl, is when the shoulder is moved much closer to the jack, by applying additional weight. It is well understood, that for a ‘firing shot‘, the bias has been totally removed from the running surface between mat and jack. For varying weighted shots, the shoulder is adjusted from its normal rd 2/3 distance to something closer to, or further from the jack. (Except in the case of Aero bowls where the shoulder is 50%.) Using this moving shoulder, coupled with changes to the ‘green’ being taken, a variety of differing shots can be achieved.

Honours Boards
Working Group The group was formed following the AGM with the specific remit to plan for the reinstallation of the former Honours Boards. The group has now completed its task and made their recommendations. In the light of the new proposals recently provided by the board, the group presented their statement to the board th meeting on Monday 17 February. A copy of the Group’s statement and final recommendation can be found on display in the lounge. An Extraordinary General Meeting will be called in the near future to finalise the issue to the satisfaction of the membership.

Please do not come into the club with coughs or colds (we do have a member who is susceptible to germs) and maybe cut out all the handshaking before and after matches.
