WORTHING HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVES GOLD SCHOOLS GAME MARK STATUS FOR SECOND YEAR RUNNING

Sports and Dance Leaders at WHS

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark. At Worthing High School we are very proud to have achieved the Gold Mark this year. Head of PE Miss Field said: “We are always striving to improve our PE provision across the school and increase both participation and competition. This mark has given us a positive framework to work towards and we are delighted to have achieved the gold standard.” Carolyn Dickinson Headteacher said: “To achieve Gold status we had to evidence that the school provides all students with two hours of physical education within the curriculum per week and that we have a broad programme of extra curriculum provision. We also had to show we engage at least 50% of our students in extracurricular sporting activity every week and that we offer talented young sports people specific support to help them to balance their sporting commitments with school and home life. We are very proud of the award as it recognises our commitment to physical education at Worthing High.” 1

WORTHING HIGH SCHOOL ELITE SPORTS PERFORMERS AWARDED SPORTS BURSARY Two students at Worthing High School, Scott Strotten and George Neale both in Year 9 have been awarded a Sports Bursary by the school due to their excellence in their respective sports.

Scott Strotten and George Neale

Scott is a small bore rifle shooter and is the current Sussex U21 Junior Champion at 25 yards, 50 metres and 100 yards. He has held that title for 3 years╬. Scott is also part of the national shooting team for the Scouts.

George plays chess for England Juniors and has been selected for a national training academy for which only 30 players are invited. George will travel to the Czech Republic in 2017 to play and is currently ranked in the top 50 players in his age group in the UK. As well as their sporting achievements, a number of other factors are taken into account before a bursary is awa8rded; attitude, behaviour and attendance are all key indicators before any award is presented. Upon eligibility, the Sports Bursary is designed to help a student financially with their sporting endeavours. Mr. P Gill, said “We are very proud of both Scott and George and all that they have achieved so far, they are certainly ones to look out for in the future. They both lead by example and have bright futures ahead of them.”

SPORTS LEADERS ENSURE YEAR 5 INDOOR ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP ARE A HUGE SUCCESS On Wednesday 30th September, 25 WHS Sports Leaders were assigned to help organise four schools who had entered the Year 5 Year 5 Indoor Athletics Championships in the sports hall. Goring, Elm Grove, Heene and TAB all sent teams to compete in a multitude of events which were overseen by a range of Sports leaders from Years 7-11. From scoring, timekeeping, supervising and setting up, the Sports leaders did a cracking job at making the event a huge success.

Goring CE School came first and some of the Sports leaders are pictured above with the winning team. Well done to all involved for an excellent evening of sporting entertainment. 2

WHS STUDENTS INSPIRED IN SPORT BY CRAIG FIGES, ENGLAND AND GB WATERPOLO OLYMPIAN Worthing High School were honoured to welcome Craig Figes back to WHS for a second visit on Tuesday 22nd November. Craig Figes was visiting the school as part of the “Sky Sports - Living for Sport Project” - ‘Student leadership’ which Worthing High School is participating in. Twenty-six sport and dance leaders in Year 7 and 8 got the chance to meet with Craig Figes, hear his life story and work through the six keys to success including: mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills, sports and life knowledge, breaking barriers and planning for success throughout the day. Students thoroughly enjoyed their time with Craig.

Marie Field, Leader of PE, praised the project saying, ‘I am really proud of all the students who are committed to student leadership within Worthing High and to the project. It was so nice to have an Olympic athlete visit the school and share his experiences with students. The six keys to success hopefully will help students develop valuable life skills that will help them in and outside of school, now and in the future. We are all looking forward to the students leading students at Worthing high school and feeder schools in a number of festivals/tournaments later this term.’ 3

CRACKIT A number of students from Year 7 were selected to take part in this 6 week project called Crackit. The project is coordinated by Future Proof CIC who has designed an innovative programme for secondary students aiming to link design and technology with sport in an interesting way. Worthing High School was chosen as the pilot school for West Sussex with the first cohort starting in November 2015.

A group of up to 20 students commit to attending a 6 week after school club. Each week, the first hour is spent playing football with Sussex Football Association. A half an hour session is spent with a design agency Pleece and Co who support the students to design characters related to football which will be used to brand team footballs and T shirts at the end of the project.

GCSE MOUNTAIN BIKING YEAR 11 During the final week of school before the festive break, GCSE PE students in Year 11 will be taking part in a one day Mountain Bike practical assessment at Stanmer Park, Brighton with Mr Townsend. Ten students will be mountain biking on Tuesday 13th December, another ten students on Wednesday 14th December and the last ten students will be biking on Thursday 15th December.

Over the course of the day, students will be taught and assessed in a wide range of different aspects of mountain biking which will include bike safety, bike mechanics, cycling on different terrains, cycling uphill, cycling downhill, braking at different speeds and how to effectively use gears on different hill gradients. Students will then have to show the skills they have learnt by cycling on a mountain bike trail at the end of the day. The aim is for each student to show skills which will allow them to have mountain biking as one of their top 4 practical performance grades for GCSE PE. Let’s hope that the rain holds off so the cyclists don’t get too wet or cold!

DANCE WORTHING COLLEGE’S WINTER DANCE SHOW

The Year 11 BTEC Performing Arts dance students were invited on Tuesday 13th December to perform at the Worthing College annual winter dance show. The year 11 students performed there current dance piece, “Do you know what it is like to be me?” which is a dance based on orphan children. The students showed professionalism throughout the whole evening supporting the other performers from Worthing College and Davison. It was a fantastic evening and all students should be very proud of their performance.

VOLLEYBALL The volleyball club started at Worthing High in September this year and there has been a fantastic amount of players coming to the club with 25 people regularly attending on a Tuesday night. The energy levels have been fantastic with everyone showing real enthusiasm for the sport. The club has been coached by Mr Earle, with fantastic support from Dom Wisdom and Sandrine Laurelut from Worthing Volleyball Club. We have also been lucky enough to have some sessions from Freda Bussey MBE, international volleyball coach and one of the top coaches in the UK. 5 of the players have been invited to Worthing Volleyball Club and are now competing with adults at those sessions, a very good achievement. In even more exciting news, 3 of the players have now been invited to join the South East England volleyball squad and will be attending training with them soon. All of the students have developed into highly promising volleyball players and we are looking forward over the next term to developing our team play and organising our first matches against other teams.

6

NETBALL YEAR 7 The Year 7 netball team have been training hard and are developing as a team. We have had lots of players turn up regularly to training and all players have been involved in the squad for games. The players have come up against some tough opponents and have been a credit to themselves when playing in very cold conditions outside . The best team performance of the season was against Sir Robert Woodard Academy where the players showed real grit and determination after being down by 4 points in the first quarter to then only being 1 point down at the start of the final quarter. Unfortunately the team did not win this particular game but if the players show the same amount of effort throughout the rest of their Worthing High School careers they will soon become a team which wins regularly. SQUAD: Lauren Love, Jessica Manga, Martha Tomozei, Leah Watts, Anya Kovacs, Emma Bishop, Lucy May Sherratt, Katie Sutherland, Charlotte Jordan, Abbie Bridle, Tia Herod

YEAR 10 The Year 10 netball squad are a talented bunch or girls and it has been a pleasure to watch them play this year. The players in the squad have worked hard to support each other on and off the court and have had a season filled with injuries to key players. We really hope that the girls continue to play together and will be back together as a squad in Year 11 to compete in the Worthing District Schools League. SQUAD: Matilda Dunglison, Kirthika Koneswaren, Sophie Downham, Abi Burley, Emma Boniface, Jessica Turrell, Olivia Smith, Georgia Cox

BOYS BASKETBALL Unfortunately through no fault of the students, only the Year 8 boys basketball team has managed to play a game so far in the district league, the rest of the boys’ teams are yet to open their accounts. All but one of the league games due to be played this side of Christmas have been postponed yet again as a result of the opposition schools losing their facilities due to the Year 11 mock exam season. For their one and only game so far, the Year 8 boys faced a historically strong Steyning Grammar School team with a certain ex Worthing High School pupil playing: Jake Brock.

The team consisted of: Preston Wheatley, Dieter Forster, Tomasz Utczinski, Archie Cairns, Lee Vidal, Harry Margeson and Daniel Vassiliou (and a special guest appearance by Jake Brock from Steyning Grammar School!)

The boys played exceptionally well, instantly gelling as a team and playing some exceptionally fluid basketball. As a result, Worthing High School emerged victorious with a convincing 33 – 9 win. Based on this performance, I am sure that they will be competing for some silverware this year. A fantastic performance lads, well done!

YEAR 8 & 9 GIRLS BASKETBALL Well done to the U14 girls basketball team this season. This is one of the most committed teams in the school. The girls train without fail every Tuesday morning from 7:30-8:30am and work really hard. This has lead to some fantastic basketball. Both skills and fitness levels have developed and I have no doubt this will be a very strong team to beat next academic year. The girls finished 4th out of 10 schools this season. Well done to everyone who has been part of the team this season.

Team: Lucy Blower, Ellie Chambers, Sophie Cole, Matilda Cooper, Grace Hawkins, Amber Herod, Galatée Oger-Libor, Katrina Richards, JazmynBrock Matthews, Hattie Marshall, Rosie Turrell Olivia Weller

CHELSEA FC FOUNDATION BREAKFAST CLUB

Since the beginning of the new school year, Chelsea FC Foundation have been running a football breakfast club at Worthing High for Years 7 and 8, both boys and girls. Students have woken up extra early to get to school to take part in the fun and challenging sessions delivered by professional coaches. Each session has started at 7.30am and taken place on the 3G astro. They have been introduced to new skills when dribbling the ball whilst improving their technique in shooting and passing. The sessions are designed to also improve players ability to work in a team environment, including communication and problem solving skills. Students have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have continued to take part each week in the sessions.

YEAR 8 & 9 GIRLS FOOTBALL Girls’ football continues to thrive at Worthing High School, practices are popular and well attended. Football is so popular that WHS entered two full teams into the district league this season. The girls had some promising results however they just missed out on a spot in the semi-finals by finishing 3rd in the WHS league this year. Well done to all the girls’ for their commitment, enthusiasm and determination, both at training and during matches. TEAM: COLE, Sophie COOPER, Matilda PETTIT, Rosa RICHARDS, Katrina BROCK-MATTHEWS, Jazmyn BROWN, Amy CORNISH, Ella DEAN, Georgia DIVALL, Tamzin FISHER, Rachel GREEN, Annie GRIGGS, Olivia GROOME, Lauren HODGE, Rosie MARSHALL, Hattie MARSHALL, Jasmine REDMAN, Rebecca TURRELL, Rosie WELLER, Olivia

YEAR 7 BOYS FOOTBALL The Year 7 boys football team have certainly lots to be proud of this season; training has been well attended with over 40 students every week and the positive work ethic displayed on the training pitch has helped the boys put in some encouraging performances on the playing field. On the pitch the boys always looked threatening when going forward, moving the ball around and playing possession football akin to the great Barcelona. The lads were solid at the back, dealing with anything and everything in a solid and dependable manner. A result of particular note is the 4 - 2 victory over a strong and well organised Chatsmore side, all the boys displayed excellent character which helped the lads secure a deserved win. A very positive first season boys, well done!

Squad consisted of: Rory Murphy, Oliver Sully, Georgie Odell, Brad Harding, Max Fish, Jake Rapps, Ollie Anscombe, Jake Bridle, Archie Towse, Jack Dand, Robbie Votta, Ben Mazet, Connor Cook, Arron Price, Oscar Noakes, Alfie Moxham, Stanley Rose, Harry Wade, Thomas Simpson, Sam Hill, Tom Wright and Louis Hodge.

DISTRICT FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS 2016 YEAR 8 AND 9 BOYS The Year 8 boys football team got their league off to a great start winning their first game 6-3 vs Chatsmore back in September. It was a sign of good things to come as they went through the rest of the season without dropping a single point, to make it to the semi finals against Sion. The match played at home, was another excellent game where Worthing came through convincing winners to set up a final against Sir Robert Woodard Academy. The final, held at Steyning Town FC, was their toughest game of the season, despite taking an early lead with goals from Alfie Hall and Harry Margeson to go into half time 5-1 up.

Winning team: Connor Chambers, Alex Noone, Joe Langmaid, Aaron Rees-Luker, Harry Cuthbert, Will Simpson, Jaden Sparkes, Will Bruce, Zac Gould, James Ford, Jack Older, Xander Pearson, Nathan Berry, Reece Gasson and Marley Marshall Miranda.

In the second half, Woodard showed great determination and fight to really put pressure on us and got two early goals to make the game a nervy 5-3, only for the boys to regroup and go onto win the game 9-3 and win the championship. A massive congratulations to all the boys!

Winning team: Jack Burton, Harry Margeson, Archie Cairns, Carrick Howard, Kiko Tanev, Hugo Okada, Luca Di Lorenzo, Josh Hill, Joe Cameron, Alfie Hall, Aidan Lacey, Daniel Vassilou, Rob Debono

The Year 9 boys continued on their unbeaten run by beating Steyning Grammar 1-0 in the final of the District League Championship division on Tuesday 22nd November. Held on the newly laid 4G astro at Steyning Town FC, the boys faced a strong opposition and were feeling the pressure in the first half. Man of the match Connor Chambers in goal kept a relentless SGS at bay with a string of terrific saves. With Harry Cuthbert and Marley Marshall Miranda working hard in central midfield and the defence at full stretch, the tide eventually turned in the second half. With the floodlights turned on, the WHS boys started to dominate and control the game led by captain Jaden Sparkes. After a fine move down the wing, Nathan Berry headed down a cross for Zac Gould to latch onto who then calmly slotted away into the bottom corner. The partisan crowd were silenced and Worthing High held on for a famous victory in the rolling hills of Steyning. Well done to all the boys who played. 11

CROSS COUNTRY During the week commencing Monday 21st November; all students in Year 7, 8 and 9 participated in the preliminary rounds of the District Cross Country Championship. Students ran a challenging course laid out on the school field with the goal being to become one of the 6 fastest students in their respective year groups and ultimately selected for the District Cross Country Championships at Lancing Manor.
