Hello spa lovers!

Richard Brugger Rosalyn Carr Adelle Carnell

It’s spring! Time to dust off those cobwebs, spring clean your home and life and shake a leg in preparation for those lazy summer days that are just around the corner (honestly!).

Photography Dreamstime, istockphoto

This is a great time of the year. It may still be a bit nippy outside but it’s so heartening to see those daffodil bulbs pushing their way skywards in hopeful expectation of basking in the spring sunshine. But if you can’t wait any longer to feel the heat, you can be in sunnier climes in just a few hours. If you’re looking for a bargain on a spa break, we have sourced a mouth- watering selection of one-off Special Offers on page 14. Or check out the world’s finest on our website www.spaworld.tv Wherever you fancy, just ring our new holiday bookings team for our very latest offers around the world. We have been busy globetrotting since our last issue with our roving reporters travelling far and wide. We have flumped on white powder beaches in Maldives; chilled in the spa in sweltering Dubai; had tired limbs massaged in the Alps after skiing down challenging pistes; discovered Slovenia and sailed into the sunset on a spa cruise.

Advertising Sales Manager

We’ve also found time to discover the best home-grown spas in sleepy Norfolk, Tring, Berkshire and the North Yorkshire Moors. Whew!

London Sales Team

We’re looking pretty relaxed and refreshed too, after sampling the latest and greatest spa treatments, from floatation therapy to facials, including the Skin Gym; a new snake viper inspired facial and Restylane fillers. There’s nothing like a spa break for putting the spring back into your step – so fill your boots! See you in our next issue.

Roll back the years A stay at the newly-opened Rockliffe Hall in County Durham could help you roll back the years if you indulge in the signature treatment at the hotel’s spa. The Hydramemory Facial (60 minutes, £70) is a deeply hydrating and moisturising facial, which counteracts the ageing process using a blend of special ingredients, which work together to return moisture,

resulting in ultra-smooth, luminescent skin. An anti-ageing collagen mask adds extra hydration to complete the treatment. Rockliffe Hall, a Gothic mansion set in a 375-acre estate on the banks of the River Tees, was the former home of the family behind the Stockton to Darlington Railway and Barclays Bank. The hotel’s spa has stained glass windows through which light streams onto the indoor pool, creating a truly magical effect. Rooms from £95 per person, based on double occupancy. www.rockliffehall.com

Relax and chill! Brrrr! If you thought that spa treatments are all about being cosseted in cosy wraps, then think again! Finland offers new energising spa treatments at 110o below zero! The luxurious Finnish Haikko Spa in Provoo, near Helsinki, is offering ice cold spa treatments at 110o below zero. The super cold treatment, known as Cryotherapy, uses an old pain relieving method, which subjects the body to extreme cold, causing the skin’s surface temperature to drop to around 3oC. The treatment, which can relieve health problems including insomnia, stress and skin conditions, works when the temperature receptors in the skin send messages to the brain which triggers it to boost the circulatory, endocrine, immune and central nervous systems, creating a physical rush and leaving you feeling revitalised with reduced muscle tension. www.visitfinland.com

Nip & Tuck Career Boosters As the economy starts to pick up, workers are increasingly turning to cosmetic procedures to push themselves up the career ladder and improve their employability, says Terri Cody-Owen 22

T

hese days, there’s increasing pressure for us to look our best. It seems that every celebrity has had ‘a little maintenance’ – from Botox to boob jobs, in order to maintain their position in the spotlight. But it’s not just the glitterati that are splashing out on cosmetic surgery to improve their careers.

People from all walks of life are choosing to change their appearance in a bid to give them the cutting edge in the competitive workplace. Whether its minor non-surgical tweaks with fillers or major surgery, including facelifts and liposuction, an increasing number of Brits are taking the plunge and changing their appearance. When fewer jobs are available, it’s about ‘survival of the fittest’ – and the most physically attractive! People are now seeking cosmetic improvements in a serious bid to make a good first impression at interviews and to make their mark in the boardroom. Cosmetic treatment is relatively affordable, but the economic downturn is forcing some people to seek ‘budget deals’ for cosmetic procedures. Unfortunately there are plenty of under qualified people looking to make money out of it, who will offer cut-price deals for shoddy work. Don’t be one of their victims. Medi-travel is another increasingly popular option, with a growing number of people traveling abroad to countries like Spain, India and Poland for cosmetic surgery. Once again don’t let your search of a bargain result in a bodged op with a surgeon or clinic you haven’t fully researched. Don’t be tempted to rush into anything without taking professional advice and be realistic about your expectations. If you are still considering having cosmetic surgery, then it’s more important than ever to ensure that you see a qualified and experienced surgeon. Talk to your GP who will know the reputations of local surgeons and can give you a referral. A little research goes a long way, so check out recommended websites. The Department of Health: www.dh.gov.uk offers comprehensive information about cosmetic surgery and The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons www.baaps.org.uk can also provide you with a list of qualified surgeons in your area.

The Good Surgeon Guide For free advice and honest recommendations from people who have already been there and done that, log onto The Good Surgeon Guide – an independent plastic surgery and cosmetic treatment review website, which offers recommendations on individual plastic surgeons and clinics. The site is regulated by BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) to allow Brits who have had cosmetic surgery to review their experience and post before and after photos, so that others can avoid the pitfalls and benefit from their knowledge. www.thegoodsurgeonguide.co.uk

Non-Surgical Procedures Figures released today by The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, reveals that the non-surgical cosmetic surgery market has seen continued growth in 2009, with dermal fillers and chemical peels driving this increase. There was also a rise in the number of male patients who now account for 18 per cent of all patients, with Boytox (male Botox) and Sweatox (the anti sweat Botox) driving the growth. Non-surgical procedures now account for 32 per cent of The Harley Medical Group’s business. The increase has been galvanised by the launch of the Obagi Blue Chemical Peel, a hugely popular peel dubbed the ‘Recessionista’s Facelift’ due to its highly effective and long lasting results. The ‘Blue’ in the treatment is a patented blue base, which allows trained practitioners to control the depth of the peel. www.harleymedical.co.uk

New Cosmetic Treatments Moob Jobs A record-breaking number of men now are having cosmetic surgery to reduce the size of their breasts – it’s now the UK’s fifth most popular surgery for men. Plastic Surgery Partners surgeon Dai Davies says: “The difficulty in reshaping men’s breasts using standard liposuction is that the breast has to still fit in with the rest of the body shape. The other problem is the excess skin and too much tissue in the area.” Dai is now using the latest procedure, which replaces old fashioned liposuction methods with new machines (Body Tite), which guarantee better results. Body Tite is the first Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction (RFAL) machine, which facilitates simultaneous electrosurgical destruction of both fat cells and blood vessels, combined with precise heating of the sub-dermal skin layer. This helps tighten and contract the excess skin. www.plasticsurgerypartners.co.uk

Minimally invasive facelift Have you reached the point in your life when you think your face could really benefit from a little nip and tuck but can’t spare the time? Facial ageing is a fact of life and occurs because of a loss of elastin and collagen resulting in sagging and wrinkles. Now a faster, less invasive face lift has been developed by the surgeons at Plastic Surgery Partners that falls in between the full MACS face lift and the mini facelift. The PSP (Platysma Smas Plication) has revolutionised plastic surgery because of its quick recovery time and the fact that an overnight stay is not usually required. www.1000mile.co.uk

Bannatyne Spa has just announced the launch of Define at Bannatyne Spa, which is offering an exclusive range of non-surgical aesthetic treatments, including rejuvenation peels and injectable treatments such as dermal fillers, Botox and laser hair removal. The first Define at Bannatyne Spa clinic is to begin operating at the company’s flagship spa in Darlington. If successful, the treatments may be rolled out to the chain’s 30 spa sites across the UK.

Radiant bride We all want to look young and beautiful on our wedding day – including ‘mature’ brides who have waited longer to meet their Mr Right. Terri Cody-Owen finds a non-surgical cosmetic solution…

N

othing in life is guaranteed, including the expectation that you will meet Mr Right during your bloom of youth. But if you are an older bride by the time you say those magical words, “I do!” then you are not alone. More of us than ever before are getting hitched in our 30’s 40’s and 50’s.

Thankfully, being a ‘mature’ bride doesn’t mean you have to compromise on looking your absolute best, thanks to the latest beauty techniques that can help you roll back the years during your lunch break without resorting to cosmetic surgery. Spa World’s newly married editor Terri Cody-Owen was in her 40’s before she met and married her Mr Right. Determined to look as fresh-faced as a bride half her age, she opted for a course of non-invasive lunchtime cosmetic procedures to restore lost youth.

Terri Says: The secret is to plan a programme of treatments well ahead of the wedding, so I booked in appointments for Restylane fillers that were perfectly timed to give me the best results for my big day.

Beautiful lunch break

Bespoke wedding treatments

In search of full lips, youthful hands and a radiant complexion, I made my way to Fiona & Marie Facial Aesthetics clinic in London’s Harley Street for a course of Restylane treatments three months before my big day. Fiona & Marie Facial Aesthetics is a discreet and friendly medi-clinic, which is highly recommended by Restylane for its customer care and excellent results.

I had a course of three treatments, administered by Marie, over a two-month period, incorporating both Restylane Lipp for fuller lips and Restylane Vital for skin boosting on my hands and face. The treatments comprise a number of very fine micro injections of the fillers, administered over three sessions, three weeks apart.

Does it hurt? The procedure is administered quickly with only minimal discomfort – and it’s well worth it when you see the fantastic results! Marie applied a local anaesthetic cream to my face and hands half an hour before the treatment and a dental bloc was used to numb my lips. Occasionally there may be some injection-related redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising at the injection site, however this typically disappears within a few days of the treatment.

Will I be pleased with the result? What is Restylane? Restylane Vital is a pure hyaluronic acid gel dermal filler that is injected into the skin. It works by boosting the skin’s hydration system, attracting and releasing water when needed at cellular level to restore youthful volume, stimulate the production of collagen and improve the skin’s elasticity, smoothing away lines and wrinkles and diminishing fine crepey lines caused by sun damage. It can be used for enhancing the face, hands, neck and décolletage, and as a skin conditioning treatment in its own right. Restylane Lipp is a modified version of Restylane Vital, designed specifically to create beautifully-shaped lips by plumping them up to create shape, volume and natural fullness, not a trout pout, and leaving them soft and kissable.

24

I was delighted! The skin tone on my face was noticeably plumped, radiant and hydrated. Hands are a real tell-tale sign of ageing, and after the treatment mine had lost that dry, veiny appearance and were ready to go on full view for bridal duties like exchanging rings and cutting the cake. My lips were even more thrilling! They were plumped and kissable again in time for that first kiss!

Further information The cost for a course of three treatments of Restylane Vital Light starts from £450. Benefits last around nine months and can be maintained by repeat treatment once or twice a year. Restylane Lipp starts from £400. Fiona and Marie’s Aesthetics Ltd. 121 Harley Street, London W1G 6AX. Snake charmer Rodial A-list Facial The ultimate red carpet prep: 60 mins, £90

The claim This Hollywood facial treatment targets fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and hyper pigmentation, tired eyes and lacklustre lips. It uses Rodial’s glamoxy snake serum with venom-like peptides to relax expression lines, give an instant 3-D plumping effect and enhance the glow of the skin. An intensive ‘face lift’ massage leaves the face looking sculpted and radiant as a result.

Who is it aimed at? Ladies showing the first signs of ageing – especially fans of Botox and those looking to try something a little different in their search for perfection.

How it works The solution contains Syn-ake, a neuropeptide that mimics the effects of the Temple Viper’s potent venom to instantly lift the face, freeze muscles and plump fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic Acid and oxygen provide an instant 3-D plumping effect.

The procedure The Rodial A-list Facial begins with skin cleansing to unclog the pores while brightening the skin with amino acids and Water Lily extract. Then a facial massage, which enhances the deep cleansing action and stimulates lymphatic drainage. An exfoliating fruit acid peel mask follows, to remove the dead layers of skin for a smoother, fresher finish during which a mood-enhancing head massage is performed. The face, neck and shoulders are then massaged with glamtox night, a revolutionary formula that helps reduce fine lines, plump up the skin and boost collagen. Sweeping movements with facial pressure points release facial muscle tension, smooth out fine lines and drain away puffiness. A choice of foot and leg or arm and hand massages then follow to allow time for the facial oil to be deeply absorbed. The skin is thoroughly cleansed again with an application of a glamtox acid mask followed by a blast of glamoxy snake serum for an immediate 3-D plumping effect. To finish, Rodial’s ‘cult product’ glam balm is applied to the lips, to give smoother, plumper, rosier lips – and a layer of glamtox SPF18, with its muscle freezing peptides, fills out the last of the wrinkles. An express version of the treatment lasts 30 minutes (£45) and does not include the glamtox acid mask or glamoxy snake serum applications.

Sensual Brushing Yon-Ka Evasion Sensorielle Phyto-aromatic treatment with brushes: 60 mins

The claim This stress-busting new facial and upper body treatment instills equilibrium, while restoring freshness, tone and luminosity to the skin. Light as a feather, the fan brushes caress the face, neck, upper chest, arms and hands, following the lines of tension. Smoothing strokes stimulate the nerve endings to re-establish a harmonious flow of energy. Aromatherapy oil revives the skin tone for a radiant complexion, and clients will feel happy and relaxed.

Who is it aimed at? Those who are feeling stressed and are seriously in need of TLC.

Results

How it works

The skin will be given an instant glow and will be tightened and firmed, plumped and smoothed. You will notice a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and an altogether brighter skin.

The treatment sends messages to the brain, through the miniature sensory receptors under the skin and in our olfactory (sense of smell) neurons, to feel happy and relaxed as they transmit their vibratory energy to the skin.

Where is it available? The Radial a-list facial is available at The May Fair Spa in London, and is coming soon to Celtic Manor in Wales and various UK locations of Destination Skin. www.radial.co.uk

The procedure The treatment begins with a relaxing, cleansing prelude when aromatic compresses are applied, make-up is removed, then the

face, neck, upper chest, arms and hands are massaged gently with two brushes using long strokes. A quick blast of warm mist is sprayed, containing five essential oils, followed by an exfoliating massage with warm plant-based gommage. Then follows a sensory massage with two brushes, from the face to the finger tips, followed by hand strokes for a progressive transition to the manual massage. A relaxing, oxygenating massage is then administered using warm Phyto 58 and Yon-Ka serum on the face, neck and upper chest, and Phyto Contour on the eye area. After the massage, warm towels are placedHalkidiki on shoulders and hands for relaxation, then a Masque Lift is applied to the face to boost the complexion, during which a hand massage with Lait Corps is administered. After removing the mask and applying a new hot compress, the skin is again stroked with the two fan-shaped brushes. Finally a hydrating fruitelia base is applied to enhance glow.

Results After one hour in a balancing atmosphere, charged with essential oils, skin emerges revived, fresh and glowing. A feeling of lightness, energy and well-being lasts well beyond the treatment.

Consultation and Skin Analysis I was ushered into a consultation room, which had a large UV camera and computer, plus hand-held instruments to test the Ph balance and hydration levels of my skin. Lynn, my consultant, put me at ease and questioned my lifestyle, skin routine and skin concerns. She photographed my face from several angles to check for sun damage using a UV camera and projected the image onto the screen. Sun damaged shows up as dark patches and freckles – I had a moderate amount due to years of sun worshipping, no surprise there! Lynn assured me that these problem areas could be improved by targeted skin care and treatments. The Ph balance and hydration levels were tested on my eyes, cheeks, forehead, chin etc, which revealed that my skin was too acidic and dehydrated in most areas. It was clear there was much work to be done to improve my skin! Lynn prescribed a six-week treatment plan to include three Peptide Peels and three Pumpkin Peels, accompanied by a home skincare routine using DermaQuest skincare products. The DermaQuest homecare is a vital part of the course, to prep the skin for the peels, as a well-balanced skin is more receptive to the clinical procedures on the SkinGenesis programme.

Skin Gym A session in the gym can keep our bodies looking fit and fabulous. If only we could give our complexions a power workout too for a beautifully toned skin. Well, now we can! SkinGenesis is group of non-surgical cosmetic clinics in Leeds, Manchester and Chester that offers a range of skin treatments to promote healthy skin, including the SkinGym, an intensive course of treatments to combat signs of ageing – the ultimate fitness regime for the skin! William Haseldine, Director of SkinGenesis says: “Many over-thecounter skin creams will do nothing more than sit on the surface of the skin. If consumers really want an effective anti-ageing solution, they need to go much further than a moisturiser and begin to target the underlying structure of the skin to treat the causes of ageing skin at the deepest level.” Treatments at SkinGenesis begin with an in-depth consultation, using computerised equipment to analyse the skin, after which a bespoke programme of treatments can be designed to treat individual skin problems – from acne to ageing. Terri Cody-Owen went along to SkinGenesis in Leeds with a view to improving the general condition of her skin, focussing on reducing fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation.

Terri Says: The SkinGenesis clinic is discretely located in a backwater of Leeds, close to trendy Dock Street. Once inside it is obvious that the team of highly-trained therapists and nurses mean business. There are no fluffy robes and slippers, but there is the latest high-tech equipment, a welcoming cup of tea and friendly smiles all round.

Pumpkin and Peptide Peels A six-week course of skin peels was scheduled over the following weeks, beginning with a Pumpkin Peel. The Pumpkin Peel smells fantastic, and when applied warms up rapidly, feels tingly and stings a little, but nothing too unpleasant. After ten minutes the peel is removed and a cooling gel is applied. The following week, the same procedure, using a Peptide Peel, which is slightly gentler and doesn’t feel as warm to the skin. The two-week cycle of Pumpkin and Peptide Peels continued over the next six weeks, during which the improvements to my skin became increasingly noticeable – fine lines were disappearing rapidly!

Does it Work? Definitely! After the final treatment, the Ph and hydration tests were repeated on my skin to measure the improvements. The results were remarkable, with both tests now giving normal results. This was no surprise, as my skin no longer looked or felt dehydrated, fine lines were reduced and my skin looked brighter and more alive. For the first time, I felt comfortable to go out without foundation!

How much will it cost? Peels cost £95 per treatment. A SkinGym anti-ageing course starts at £1399 for six treatments, which includes Pumpkin and Peptide Peels, plus Ultrasonic Skin Toning with Peptide Mask and Microdermabrasion and a DermaQuest Skin Therapy skin care kit.

Further information SkinGenesis is a non-surgical cosmetic clinic with branches in Leeds, Manchester and Chester. Skin Genesis also offers Intense Pulsed Light (IPL); Microdermabrasion; Mesotherapy; Ultrasound Skin Toning and the latest range of medical and resurfacing peels. www.skingenesis.co.uk

Float on What better way of letting your cares drift away than with oatation therapy? asks Richard Brugger

W

hen it comes to getting away from the sea of troubles most of us face in modern life, there is nothing quite like floatation therapy to make us feel buoyant again. Floating on water feels so simple, elemental, supportive and comforting – something we can probably link to our beginnings in the cosseting warmth of the womb. Today we are spoilt for choice when it comes to floatation therapies, with many spas offering some sort of treatment, from small hydro baths right up to large pools. There are, of course, even floatation tanks for the home, not to mention the biggest tank of all – the sea. All we have to do is lie back and think of... nothing!

Beginnings The origins of floatation dates back to 1954, when Dr John C Lilly, a medical practitioner and neuro-psychiatrist, began research into the origin of consciousness and its relation to the brain. He tried many experiments with different kinds of float tanks in a bid to create a device that would deprive or restrict the number of external stimuli so that the brain and the individual would be tested in an atmosphere of isolation. Initially these devices were called Sensory Deprivation Chambers, but in recent years this has been changed to Restricted Environmental Stimuli Therapy (REST). The philosophy behind floatation therapy is to provide people with a way of improving physical, emotional and psychological health. Central to this is a need for deep relaxation, which has been validated by recent research showing that up to 90 per cent of people visiting a GP do so because of stress-related disorder.

How it works The advantage of floatation therapy is that it enables most individuals to experience very deep levels of relaxation without needing to learn any special technique. The deep relaxation that occurs in floatation slows down bodily functions, heart rate and brain activity, and in turn the mind, allowing the conscious and analytical part of the mind to enter a state of deep rest and to be bypassed. It does this through the absence of stimuli such as light, visual images, noise, gravity and touch. Floatation also stimulates levels of the natural painkiller and endorphin encephalon, which encourages a sense of well-being and euphoria. According to Dr Lilly, 40 minutes of floatation is equivalent to an incredible eight hours’ sleep.

lining which a client lies on. This lining is folded over the body and the person is then lowered down and a support is removed, leaving the person cocooned and floating on the heated water below, albeit in a restricted manner. It is often combined with aromatic essential oils and particularly body wraps, which benefit from the heat generated below. Dry floatation is also an effective pre-massage treatment.

Floatation tanks Floatation tanks still adhere to the same design principles laid down by Dr Lilly, but now make the most of modern production techniques. The tanks typically resemble egg-shaped enclosed bathtubs – usually made from fibreglass – with a door on top to allow access, and are built to eliminate all outside distractions and stimuli, although interior lights are usually provided. A large amount of Epsom Salts is added to the water to create a 30cm deep pool of salt water in the tank, which is heated to body temperature. All these elements create an atmosphere that enhances relaxation and well-being. Tanks are not just limited to floatation centres and spas, with models finding a place of homes, sports clubs, health centres and even corporate headquarters. Floataway is a Norfolk-based company that manufactures tanks for professional and domestic use. The Skylark is a ‘basic’ model for the home, which provides everything you need to float including the tank and fittings, full installation and 300 kgs of Epsom Salts. www.floataway.com

Floatation pools The range of floatation pools in spas has never been greater, from single person tubs to full size floatation pools. The latter can be found at destinations such as Nirvana Spa in Berkshire. These pools contain solutions of salts (often from the Dead Sea), which are heated to body temperature of 35 centigrade and provide deep relaxation without the restriction of an enclosed environment, making them ideal for those who find tanks too claustrophobic. Smaller single person floatation baths provide a more intimate method of relaxation. These baths sometimes combine hydrotherapy jets to tackle cellulite and improve circulation.

It is also worth bearing in mind that short of becoming an astronaut and blasting into space, floatation is the only time our body weight becomes free from the effects of gravity – literally taking a load off our mind! With such a powerful form of relaxation it is no surprise that floatation provides the following therapeutic benefits:

Mind Floatation is an excellent way of relieving stress (plus associated digestive tract conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and ulcers), depression and anxiety as well as promoting healthy sleep. It is also believed that floatation stimulates left and right hemispheres of the brain and synchronisation between the two, enhancing concentration, mental clarity, memory retention, self-hypnosis and facilitating freedom from phobias and addictions.

Body The fact that the body is completely supported and free from gravity encourages blood flow to the joints and releases muscle tension, making it effective for sufferers of musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and chronic back pain. This pain relief is enhanced by the production of endorphins. Floatation has also been used to aid recovery for those with sporting injuries right through to patients with cancer. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis also react well to floatation, particularly in Dead Sea salt water.

Dry floatation Dry floatation offers the feeling of weightlessness and benefits of floatation without getting wet. The dry floatation tanks have a rubber Floatworks pool

The Floatworks The Floatworks in Thrale Street, near London’s South Bank, is billed as ‘the leading Floatation centre in the world’. The centre has nine individual floatation tanks, each situated in lockable private rooms equipped with showers. The tanks are fitted with internal lights for beginners and those who feel uncomfortable in the dark. www.floatworks.com

The Blue Lagoon, Iceland No trip to Iceland is complete without a visit to the Blue Lagoon, a vast lake of steaming, geothermal water in the midst of a barren lava desert, where mineral-rich waters are pumped from 2000m below the earth’s surface. The waters of the lagoon are silica and algae rich and contain unique heat-resistant friendly bacteria, which combine to create a natural anti-inflammatory solution, particularly effective for sufferers of Psoriasis. For extra floatation therapy indulge in The Blue Lagoon Massage – a total sensory pleasure. www.thebluelagoon.com

Floating in the Dead Sea

Floating in Nature – the Dead Sea To experience the ultimate in natural buoyancy, the place to go is most definitely Mother Nature’s very own floatation pool – The Dead Sea. This remarkable stretch of water between Jordan and Israel (it is actually a large lake), is the saltiest and most buoyant sea in the world, and at 400m below sea level is also the lowest point on earth. The jade green water (10 times saltier than the Mediterranean) contains 150 different minerals and salts, which imbues it with incredible curative powers. The high concentrations of magnesium is particularly efficacious for sufferers of skin conditions such as psoriasis, while Bromine has a powerful relaxing effect on the nervous system. The sea’s high salinity contributes to the highly viscous and oily water, which is so dense and supportive it makes your body ‘sit’ out of the water like a cork. The haze given off by the evaporating sea and high atmospheric pressure also filters out harmful UVB rays that cause sunburn, so you can enjoy your float without burning your belly!

Jordan The best spa destinations are based on the shores of the Dead Sea at Sweimeh. The Zara Spa (www.zaraspa.com) at the Moevenpick Resort combines traditional Arabic detailing with a range of floatation experiences. This includes an outdoor heated Hydro-Pool and two interior Dead Sea floatation pools. The neighbouring Jordan Valley Marriot Dead Sea Resort & Spa (www.marriott.middleeast.com) also has an excellent spa with a Dead Sea Salt Pool. Both resorts have their own stretch of beach.

Forte Village, Sardinia On the south coast of Sardinia, the Forte Village resort is a worldclass destination spa, famous for Forte Village Thearmae, a superb thalassotherapy spa within the resort. Set in tropical gardens, the thalassotherapy centre offers a sensational journey through a series of six high saline-density seawater pools, heated to a range of temperatures, providing not only the benefits of the water’s density but also the therapeutic properties of high and low temperatures. You can be indulged further with a sensuous Shiatsu Water Massage, then finish off with a dip in the bubbling hydrotherapy pool. www.fortevillage.com

Israel The Sheraton Moriah Dead Sea Resort (www.starwoodhotels.com) is located on a beautiful secluded stretch of beach facing the Edom Mountains. The spa features a Sulphur pool and a wide range of Dead Sea treatments. The Caesar Premier Dead Sea Resort & Spa Hotel’s suitably Romanesque spa is equipped with a Dead Sea swimming pool and a Sulphur pool.

Spas to float Nirvana Spa, Berkshire The award-winning day spa in leafy Berkshire was the first in the UK to introduce large-scale floatation pools. Dead Sea salts with 21 minerals are combined with Nirvana’s own pure natural source water to provide the water used in the spa’s two floatation areas. The Celestial Room features a large circular pool that can hold up to six people at a time. Floaters can relax and gaze at the star-domed ceiling and wall murals whilst a gentle current, dimmed lighting and ambient lighting enhance the sensory experience. The Ocean Room offers a more social environment in which to relax and take in the Dead Sea salts. Nirvana offers float sessions and an induction course. www.nirvanaspa.co.uk

Antony Worrall Thompson’s

International Rescue from Diabetes

D

iabetes is on the increase. With more than 2.6 million people in the UK suffering from diabetes, the figures are worrying. The fact that a further half a million remain undiagnosed with type 2 diabetes or unaware that they are at risk from pre-diabetic conditions means that we should all be vigilant and eat good healthy food to lower our own risk of developing the condition. Statistics show that the main reason behind such high numbers of type 2 diabetes sufferers is obesity and poor diet – the good news is that a healthy diet, losing excess weight, quitting

smoking and keeping active can all help to control your glucose levels and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. As a sufferer of a pre-diabetic condition himself, Antony Worrall Thompson knows how tricky it can be to adapt to a new diet. He has now created an inspiring new book of easy-to-make, tasty dishes from around the globe, which means that healthy eating and successfully managing diabetes doesn’t have to mean giving up your favourite food. His new cookbook, The Essential Diabetes Cookbook (Kyle Cathie, £20) HB is packed

with over 200 recipes from around the world, along with advice and clear nutritional information. He has created mouth-watering dishes with influences from the finest cuisines of Morocco, Turkey, the Americas, Asia and the Mediterranean. Spa World has put together a three-course dinner menu, with a distinctively international flavour, using our favourite recipes from the book. Charming Norfolk

Calling all stressed-out city dwellers! The perfect quick-ďŹ x antidote to the pressure of city life is most deďŹ nitely a short break in the English countryside 44 www.spaworld.tv p44-45_SPAWORLD_norfolk.indd 1

N

orfolk offers a refreshing retreat for busy Brits. Around every corner you will find pretty villages, historic churches, miles of unspoilt beaches, countryside, rivers teeming with wildlife, relaxed towns and the city of Norwich, with its wonderful shops and cathedral, not forgetting the famous Norfolk Broads.

Norfolk Broads Imagine chugging along in your own little motor cruiser. Mile upon mile of gentle waterways glistening in the sunlight with peaceful Norfolk countryside as far as the eye can see. Relax as you listen to the water lapping against the stern and look out for moorhens stirring in the rushes. Cycle along riverside paths. Visit the nature reserves and explore pretty villages. While away the hours watching the wildlife and settle down with a glass of wine as the sun slowly starts to set. Bliss? Definitely. The Norfolk Broads is now the UK’s largest nationally protected wetland and an important area for wildlife. And it’s more accessible than you can imagine. Hire a motor launch just for an afternoon (www.dayboathire.com) or book a 12-berth yacht for a whole week (www.blakes.co.uk). The choice is yours. But it’s not just for boating. Go fishing on the riverbank or hire a bike and try a bit of pedal-power. Or simply walk along the 330km of paths through countryside and woodland.

Incredible coastline And if you simply want to stroll hand in hand along a deserted stretch of sandy beach, Norfolk can oblige. With miles of wide sandy beaches and some of the best nature reserves in the country, it’s easy to see why artists and writers have flocked to the Norfolk coast for years. Even on busy days many of Norfolk’s beaches have empty hideaways where you feel you have the place to yourself.

Norwich However, if you can’t stay away from city life for too long, then a trip to Norwich is a must. Throbbing with nightlife, buzzing with shoppers and alive with arts and music, the atmosphere here is contagious. Norwich is the most complete Medieval city in Britain, with museums, a magnificent cathedral, a Norman castle, ancient pubs, half-timbered houses and cobbled streets. Pack your credit card and hit the shops – Norwich has been voted one of the top ten shopping destinations in Britain! By night the city is humming with lively bars, clubs and restaurants. You can party into the early hours if the mood takes you! www.visitnorfolk.co.uk

If active rest is what you need, then golfers will delight in the 71 par, 6,275-yard golf course, not to mention the floodlit 22-bay driving range. And you can keep fit with a few lengths of the hotel’s indoor pool, or work out in the gym. Or perhaps you’d prefer to relax and unwind in the steam room and sauna.

Vineyard at Stockcross If gourmet food and indulgent spa treatments are your idea of heaven, then the Vineyard at Stockcross could be your gateway, says Ros Carr

T

here are some things in life that naturally go together, and if you’re looking for a short break you want all the ingredients; great accommodation and surroundings, delicious food and treatments that leave you feeling relaxed and revived.

The five-star Vineyard at Stockcross country house hotel has evolved with this in mind. Originally conceived as a ‘restaurant with rooms attached’, it has since developed to include suites and the Vineyard Spa.

Created around a 19th century hunting lodge, the hotel has modern touches such as the William Pye ‘fire and water’ pool at the entrance, and numerous works of art and sculpture complement the interior. Set in attractive Berkshire countryside, the hotel takes inspiration from the vineyards of California and the Peter Michael Winery. Owned by Classic FM founder Sir Peter Michael, who established his own winery in Sonoma Valley, there are over 600 Californian bins and over 1100 international wines to choose from in the two Michelin-starred restaurant, which has won numerous accolades for the modern British style of its ‘cerebral chef’ John Campbell.

The treatments The spa offers a wide choice of treatments that are geared mostly towards relaxation and wellbeing, with indulgent massage, body and facial treatments. The spa has its own gourmet offering in the form of ISHI Chocotherapy, Vinotherapy and Truffletherapy, which uses Fairtrade Criollo cocoa, organic grapes and truffles from Italy. The Chocotherapy helps to improve skin tone, Vinotherapy detoxifies and rebalances, and Truffletherapy treats the most visible signs of ageing. The Chocotherapy and Truffletherapy treatments include chocolates specially designed by executive chef John Campbell, and the Vinotherapy includes a glass of red or white wine. The spa also features its own Vineyard signature treatments as well as Espa, ghd hair conditioning, men’s, couples’ and mother to be options.

The spa The Vineyard Spa is what could be described as boutique, with four treatment rooms located in the main body of the hotel apart from the water facilities. Each room is decorated with an individual theme such as Eden and Celestial, and one is a couples suite; perfect for a romantic getaway. The spa’s most attractive feature is its circular swimming pool, which is bathed in natural light by way of the impressive circular dome. The pool also features massage jets, and a steam room and sauna are located on the lower level of the spa for further relaxation. Loungers and refreshments can be enjoyed by the poolside, and the spa garden is a pleasant place to lie back in the summer.

Champneys Tring

I

t’s guaranteed excellence all the way at any of Champneys Spa resorts, however, when anyone asks me to recommend a UK spa resort, Champneys Tring is always one of the first to spring to mind. Champneys Tring is situated within easy reach of London and is perhaps the country’s most famous health resort – having enjoyed a cult following of wealthy clients for many years. After recently completed a £14 million refurbishment, Champneys Tring is once again bang up to date, and at the top of its league, offering state-of-the-art facilities, and so much more...

Stunning location Set in 170 acres of parklands, the elegant Georgian mansion offers an opulent environment of charming drawing rooms including a classical music room and games room that depicts the lifestyle of the gentry. However, the latest refurbishments have added a contemporary twist, while retaining an air of period grace and elegance. Guest rooms now boast all the mod cons – flat-screen TVs and DVD players, and many enjoy idyllic views across sweeping countryside.

Healthy dining Breakfast is a generous buffet; lunch is similarly relaxed with a daily changing menu of dishes including vegetarian and low-fat options. Meals are served on plates, which indicate portion control for those trying to drop a pound or two. In the evening, enjoy a threecourse meal – with wine if you choose, after all, this is now a luxury spa resort, not a health farm!

Chill out at the UK’s coolest health resort, says Terri Cody-Owen

Spa and activities Tring’s luxurious spa offers Elemis, La Prairie and Champneys’ own facials, massages, manicure and pedicure and a host of additional treatments – from LA Stone and Hopi Ear Candles to Aurasoma and Metamorphic Technique. There are 36 treatment rooms plus steam rooms, indoor and outdoor whirlpools and a fabulous thalassotherapy spa. A new 25-metre pool has been added, plus an impressive gymnasium and cardio theatre. There are also two dance studios offering a range of exercise classes, including gliding, spinning and flexi ball. For relaxation there’s an arts and crafts studio, spa shops, tennis courts and conference facilities. You can also hire bikes from reception and take a quick spin round the estate or explore the countryside beyond.

The big freeze Champneys is the only spa in the UK to offer Kriotherapy – an intense dry cold treatment proven to beneficially stimulate blood circulation, the hormone and immune systems and the central nervous system. The session involves moving around in a cold chamber, which is between minus 100o and 135o for up to three minutes. Kriotherapy awakens the bodey’s natural healing response and boosts circulation. It can trigger a release of endorphins, resulting in analgesia (immediate pain relief ) and can be beneficial in treating other ailments including: general fatigue, infertility, insomnia, depression, asthma and rheumatism. Champneys offer Kriotherapy Packages (£35), which combine the health benefits of a 25-minute Kriotherapy session with physiotherapy, vibration training and personal training and includes a Champneys Krio T-shirt. Subsequent sessions cost £28.

Think Thin at Champneys Need to drop a dress size? Why not join the Think Thin weekend, which takes place between 12-14 March? During this weekend break, TV presenter turned hypnotherapist/ nutritionist Lowri Turner will be hosting this hypnotherapy for weight loss break, which includes one-to-one discussions, group activities and hypnosis sessions such as ‘Stop Comfort Eating’, ‘Learn to Love Exercise’ and ‘Slim for Life’.

Feversham Arms Snuggle up in the North Yorkshire Moors for a romantic weekend of country pursuits and cosy spa treatments, says Sylvia Oakley

s far as a romantic weekend break goes, it’s hard to find anywhere more cosy and intimate than the Feversham Arms, which nestles at the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors in the charming village of Helmsley. Picture the two of you curling up in front of a glowing log fire with a glass of bubbly, enjoying a candlelit meal together in the fine-dining restaurant and indulging in a luxurious couples spa treatment before jumping into a bubbling rustic outdoor hot tub. The Feversham Arms provides the atmosphere to really unwind and let your mind drift. The Feversham Arms has been welcoming guests for 150 years, and has a loyal following of regulars who come to indulge in country pursuits, hike on the moor, explore the local shops and enjoy fine dining. Those clients remain loyal, but the Feversham Arms has attracted a host of new visitors who come from far and wide to experience the hotel’s luxurious new country chic décor, facilities and fine Yorkshire hospitality. The hotel now boasts 27 individually designed bedrooms and six new suites, an impressive reception, fine dining restaurant, a year-round outdoor heated pool and the superb Verbena Spa for luxurious pampering. Oh, and did we mention the excellent service and attention to detail? Not surprisingly The Feversham Arms Hotel & Verbena Spa has just been named Hotel of the Year 2009-2010 at the glittering AA Hospitality Awards.

Verbena Spa The Feversham Arms raised the bar yet further when it opened the Verbena Spa last year, to offer a full range of treatments and packages for both men and women, a heat experience and an outdoor hot tub to complement the existing outdoor heated pool. The spa menu includes an exciting range of treatments from Elemis, Anne Sémonin and Jessica Nails, administered

in six individual treatment rooms and a couples room, where romantic couples can enjoy a spa experience together. Anne Sémonin has created a series of signature treatments specifically for the Verbena Spa, including Royal Miracle Ice Facial, which incorporates its Cryotherapy express Radiance Ice Cubes, and Bubbling Mud for Boys which utilises a warm, bubbling marine mineral mud. Spa packages are available to both residents and non-residents and include the Baby Love package for expectant mothers and the Teen Queen package for mother and daughter.

Spa Garden The Spa Garden is a key element of the spa experience and features a south facing terrace with the traditional-style hot tub and English cottage garden plants, including lavender and santolina, which produce the essential oils used in the spa treatments, and of course, verbena – a herb with fragrant leaves and attractive flowers – the perfect complement to the Verbena Spa.

Inspired by Nature

The five-star Vilalara Thalassa Resort boasts one of the most sublime locations in the Algarve, just 50 minutes from Faro airport and set in lush gardens in a cliff top position overlooking the rolling waves of the Atlantic.

Small but surprisingly varied, there’s a lot more to discover in Slovenia The stunning resort offers direct access than you might think, says Rosalyn Carr to a golden sandy beach. It also offers

six fresh and seawater swimming pools and four tennis courts in 12 hectares of lush, verdant gardens that display shrubs, plants and flowers from around the world. Take a stroll through the glorious gardens, or along the beach, or simply find a secluded sun lounger under a shady eucalyptus tree and flump. It is impossible not to unwind and relax as the stress of life is replaced by tranquillity and inner peace. The design of the low-rise resort appears

Unless you’ve been there before, chances are you won’t know a lot about Slovenia. The size of Wales and bordered by Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria, this modest eastern European country has been slow to promote its charms to the UK market. Which is a pity, as it has reasons to go in abundance; a diverse range of green, unspoiled countryside with mountains, forests and lakes, its beautiful capital Ljubljana, delicious food and wine, and of course, the spas. Slovenia has 15 thermal health spas, which are mainly concentrated in the east of the country and harness natural healing elements such as mineral water, salt water and mud. But for the luxury spa scene, head west to the country’s small slice of Istrian coast and the Kempinski Palace Portoroz.

Kempindki Palace Portoroz Portoroz (Port of Roses) started to expand as a spa resort in the second half of the 19th century, with locals and doctors seeing the benefits of the seawater, brine and fango (mud) from the local saltpans and the pleasant Mediterranean climate. The Palace Hotel opened in 1910 in a prime spot overlooking the sea, and soon gained a glamorous reputation among European aristocrats including Franz Ferdinand. Having undergone various changes before closing in 1990, the hotel re-opened last year after a five-year restoration programme which has retained the best of its original character while adding a new wing and spa. The result, which combines Art Nouveau, Bauhaus and contemporary modern styles is certainly impressive, making the most of natural sunlight and the garden and sea views. Sitting back and sipping a drink on the terrace at any time of day is one of life’s antidotes to stress.

The treatments The spa menu offers a tempting choice of facial and body treatments including anti-aging, smoothing and slimming. Body peelings harness the local sea salt and mud, and there is a wide range of massage options that can also be enjoyed in your room or in the spa garden in the summer months. Mesotherapy, a medical technique that alleviates problems such as cellulite, sagging skin and wrinkles, is also available.

The Spa The stylish Rose Spa is the perfect place to relax and indulge in a wide variety of beauty and body treatments using Carita and Ligne St Barth. Set over two levels, it offers ten treatment rooms with natural daylight and a large couples suite complete with Jacuzzi. All the rooms have individual character and the pink and gold mosaic décor of the main areas feels light and inviting. There is a good choice of wet facilities including Turkish and Finnish saunas, a hammam with treatment bed, Jacuzzi and a plunge pool with hydromassage. The main swimming pool starts inside the spa and connects outside, where guests can relax on sun loungers or Asian-style relaxation beds with fresh juices from the pool bar. Other places to relax throughout the spa include a Zen-style garden and an indoor relaxation room with chromotherapy lighting.

I was keen to try the spa’s Signature treatment-the Rose Spa Ritual, which combines a full body massage and facial in a relaxing 90 minutes. Lying on my front, I was looking forward to having the tension in my shoulders eased away and my therapist, spa manager Aleksandra, didn’t disappoint. The ritual uses a combination of different strokes from head-to-toe including reflexology, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi and Balinese, which made it relaxing as well as effective. After enjoying the massage with avocado oil, it was time for my facial, using Ligne St Barth products. After deep cleansing, my skin was treated to papaya peeling and then a hydrating passion fruit mask. As well as feeling pleasant, the Ligne St Barth range also smells wonderful, evoking the delicious fruity scents of the Caribbean. Aleksandra finished the treatment by applying firming Carita serum, and when I finally managed to rise from the bed, my skin looked fresh and hydrated. It’s beneficial to let the body oil soak in for a while afterwards, and as it‘s so relaxing, this treatment is best scheduled for when you have an hour or two to spare afterwards.

Eating and Relaxing The food is delicious, and the hotel offers a variety of dining and drinking options, including the gourmet restaurant Sophia and the more relaxed bar/restaurant lounge Fleur de Sel. Forma Viva ladies café and saloon is the perfect place for afternoon tea and sweet temptations, and aperitif bar Bubbles has a wide selection of sparkling wines and champagne. The extensive breakfast buffet in the beautiful Belle Epoque Crystal Hall is a wonderful way to start the day.

Things to see and do Portoroz is a pleasant place to stroll around, with its cafes, shops and marina. The nearby medieval town of Piran is well worth a visit; spend a relaxing morning wandering around the seafront and enjoy some fresh seafood for lunch, explore the history of its town wall and twisty lanes, and enjoy a coffee while watching the world go by in Tartini Square. The gastronomy of the region is surprisingly varied and tasty, and you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to sample some local olives and wine. One distinctive label is Rojac, which is a family-run estate in a beautiful setting producing nine types of vintage wine. The adjoining region of the Karst is home to the Lipica Stud Farm, which has bred the famous Lipizzaner horses since 1580 and holds interesting visitor tours, as does the impressive Postojna Caves. While in Slovenia you really should visit its cultural capital Ljubljana, which is beautiful, stylish and easy to walk around. It’s also perfect for relaxing: take a boat trip down the river in the sunshine or enjoy a meal or drink at one of the riverside bars or eateries and feel life’s pressures melt away.

Carlton Hotel

f there was an Oscar nomination for the most opulent, glamorous hotel in Europe, the newly refurbished Carlton Hotel in St Moritz is a strong contender. The striking hotel, which is part of the privately owned Tschuggen Hotel Group, enjoys a prime mountainside position overlooking the frozen lake and St Moritz Bad in the valley below. As far as luxury is concerned, this ubër chic hotel is a hard act to follow! The recent refurbishment, in which celebrated Italian interior designer Carlo Rampazzi cleverly integrates contemporary design with elegant tradition, has raised the profile of the hotel’s five-star offering, blending antique furniture with the use of bold colours to provide its own slightly kitch trademark style. Accommodation is now arranged in 60 flamboyant and extremely spacious suites, rather than its previous configuration of twice the number of hotel rooms. The spacious suites all provide a stunning view across lake St Moritz as well as absolute luxury and privacy. For those seeking a discrete hideaway in the Alps, a romantic intimate retreat at the edge of the world’s most prestigious ski resort, this is the perfect choice.

Gourmet delight You won’t be surprised to learn that the wining and dining experience at the Carlton Hotel is superb. Classic fine dining culinary delights are prepared by the chef and his team at the plush Romanoff restaurant with its elegant air of yesteryear, while the Tschine Bar & Restaurant serves contemporary cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere, presented with a creative twist.

Carlton Spa Just nine months after its opening, the Carlton Spa was declared a Leading Spa of the World, chosen for its outstanding spa facilities, spa treatments and spa services – it is the only hotel in St Moritz with this accolade. The 1200 sqm spa is the ultimate wellness area, spread across three floors and featuring six treatment rooms and one exclusive spa suite with panoramic views of the Alps. At the centre is a beautiful indoor/outdoor heated swimming pool. The spa also offers sauna and steam baths, a caldarium, Finnish sauna and a ladies only sauna.

Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski Grand Hotel des Baines

Like a fairytale Castle, the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains stands majestically in St Moritz Bad, close to the lake and surrounded by forest. The popular hotel combines elegance with state-of-the-art contemporary décor behind a historic façade. St Moritz is historically a spa resort with natural springs, and the first mineral springs in the world were actually discovered on this site – giving rise to the name Grand Hotel des Bains. It is now a trendy, thriving hotel, which is an ideal base for skiers.

Ski-in-ski-out Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains offers five-star luxury in 184 rooms and suites, with impeccable service, superb facilities and a choice of three excellent restaurants – plus its own casino – try your luck if you dare! Hotel guests include ski enthusiasts and a younger, sophisticated set who come to St Moritz to drink in the glamour of the resort and enjoy a spa break. The hotel offers ski hire and the advantage of ski-in-ski-out facilities, with the start of the cross-country ski tracks on one side and one of St Moritz’s main cable cars on the other.

Spa & wellness In the health and fitness centre, a futuristic metal swimming pool overlooks the snow-capped mountains. There’s also a fitness studio, gymnasium with cardiovascular equipment, steam room, sauna, relaxation rooms and separate spa area. The Kempinski High Alpine Spa is a contemporary space with plenty of natural light. It utilises the resources of the

natural Swiss environment – glacier water, Alpine plants and wood from the forests of Engadine. Guests are pampered with an array of spa treatments in well-equipped treatment rooms with mountain views, including five massage, three cosmetic and two massage suites. In the spirit of its Alpine setting, the hotel has developed its own line of skincare products, which have been developed in collaboration with cosmetics company Alpienne, as well as doctors and farmers from the region. The products are used in spa treatments alongside Swiss spa brand Valmont, Maria Galland and Caribbean brand Ligne St Barth. Try: The Alpine Well Vital, which starts with a foot spa, followed by a 15 minute session in the steam room, then a top-to-toe massage, using hot herbal poultices. hen you want to go skiing there is one vital ingredient. Snow! At an altitude of 2300 metres, Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe and guarantees an incomparable quantity of the white stuff between November and May. Val Thorens is a perennially popular Alpine resort, which enjoys an enviable location at the top of the Trois Valees, the biggest skiing area in the world. With 600 km of high altitude, expertly managed pistes on tap – it’s a natural high for skiers of all ages and abilities. From powder fields to perfectly prepared pistes, Val Thorens offers world-class skiing and boarding, alpine skiing and snow shoe adventures, even a 6 km toboggan piste, the longest in Europe which is guaranteed to appeal to ‘kids’ of all ages! Thanks to a plethora of easily accessible lifts and cable cars which lead from the heart of the village up to the towering 3000 m peaks overlooking the resort, al fresco dining on the sun terrace at one of the many high-altitude mountain restaurants is highly recommended in order to enjoy the breathtaking, panoramic views over the surrounding alps.

A lively village The resort itself is a buzzing community with a good offering of wellstocked shops, lively bars and en-vogue boutiques. There is also a wide range of accommodation – from luxurious four star affairs to charming two star residencies; plus stylish chalets which are perfect for groups and families and plenty of well-located apartments for everyone. Most accommodation offers spectacular views over the surrounding pistes and ski-in-ski-out facilities.

Central wellness At the centre of the village there is a well managed leisure centre dedicated to fitness and wellbeing and offering a wide range of activities, including an aqua club complete with Balneotherapy pool and Jacuzzis; wellbeing area with treatments, saunas and massages and a comprehensive weights room. All in all there are more than 12 sports on offer including tennis, squash, badminton and basketball – although the thin air due to the high altitude can make the easiest exercises seem more challenging.

Superb skiing For skiers, the slopes in the immediate vicinity of the resort are ideal for learners and intermediates, with more challenging terrain towards the summits. Once you have found your ski legs, a trip over to neighbouring Meribel will provide an exhilarating day’s skiing to remember. Val Thorens Piscine

Discover Europe’s Highest Star

Hotel Fitzroy There aren’t many hotels in the Alps where you can genuinely pop your skis on, take one step out of the door and ski down a mountain, and even fewer where you can be dropped off at the door again by drag lift at the end of the day. You can at the Hotel Fitzroy. Enjoying a superb location at the edge of the slopes, the Hotel Fitzroy is built in true Alpine style – huge exposed beams, acres of natural wood and bathed in natural light. The hotel deserves every one of its four stars. The first impression upon arrival, which I overheard from one typically well-heeled guest, is “wow this is nice.” It’s not just its superb location, uninterrupted mountain views or the quiet deferential efficiency of its smartly uniformed staff that impresses most. What I liked most about Hotel Fitzroy was the easy mix of style, luxury and complete absence of stuffiness. I particularly enjoyed the large guest lounge with its roaring fire in the middle of the room, which creates a cosy ambience – and the wonderful smell of a real log fire. It’s a great place to spend time in the evening exchanging stories of the days adventures on the slopes over a cocktail.

L’Oxalys Restaurant, Gastronomique Oxalys, will certainly appeal to gastronomes. Boasting one of the leading Michelin-one-starred chefs in the Alps, Michael Surplice, and his team, the superb restaurant offers mouthwatering displays of the finest cuisine with some exceptional recipes using the finest authentic ingredients, including indigenous mountain flora such as meadowsweet, gentian, burnet, berse, calament, and beautiful wild sorrel. Clearly head and shoulders above!

L’ Oxalys Spa Guests of the Oxalys Spa are in for a treat. Book a luxurious treatment and you will be invited into your own poolroom for a private relaxing and sensual experience. Choose from a menu of Thai, shiatsu, reflexology and Ayurveda treatments to transport you into depths of calm and contentment, guaranteed to soothe away aching muscles from a day on the slopes.

Spa and wellness at the Fitzroy The spa facilities spread across three separate areas – pool, wet area and treatment rooms. The pool is large enough for doing meaningful laps, deep but chilly – perfect after a long spell in the sauna but a bit nippy for leisurely lengths. A wide range of both pampering and invigorating spa treatments are administered in crisp, clean and functional treatment rooms by excellent therapists who use their expertise to locate all the aches and pains gained on the slopes during the day and soothe them away with firm hands and relaxing rituals. It’s a great way to end an exhilarating day on the mountains. Facials and body treatments and a menu of massages use luxurious Kanebo products, and Balneo therapy treatments from Phytomer.

Val d’Isere

Val d’lsere

V

al d’Isere is the hippest, most happening, and perennially popular ski destination in the Alps. With more than 155 manicured slopes covering 300 kilometres and, of course, its legendary après ski, it’s easy to see why!

The pretty ski resort is located in the French Alps, close to the border with Italy. It nestles between two deep valleys, dominated by huge mountains, the famous Bellevarde, the easy Solaise and Iseran, the wildest one. Val d’Isere’s houses and chalets cluster round the little church, but despite its picturesque village appeal, the resort positively pulsates with energy day and night, with plenty to keep visitors entertained – from an extensive winter sports programme to bustling restaurants, shops, thriving bars, nightclubs and hotels to suit all tastes.

Les Barmes de l’Ours One of the most magnificent hotels in the resort is Les Barmes de l’Ours, situated at the bottom of Val d’Isere’s famous Bellevarde Face, where the 1992 Olympic trials took place. It is close to the heart of the village, and excellently placed for skiers due to its close proximity to the Solaise and Bellevarde lifts. On arrival at Les Barmes de l’Ours, guests are immediately aware they have stepped into a luxurious offering where the hotel’s architect, Michael Force, has raised the bar by using high quality wood, stone and fabrics in order to create a unique identity on each of the hotel’s five floors and in its 49 rooms and 27 suites.

Five domains The first floor depicts the Spirit of Scandinavia with Gustavian furniture complemented by limed walls with warm pastel tones. On the second floor, the warmth and ambience of a Great American Lodge has been created, using plush carpets against fur, leather, velvet and tartan. On the third floor, the Alpine Chalet theme is a reminder of mountain pasture chalets, while on the fourth floor, the Contemporary theme of mountain lofts is defined by clean

60

lines and plaster walls contrasting with cushions and luxurious fur throws. Finally, in the roof eves, you will find luxurious suites where no expense has been spared.

Wining & dining The cosy, welcoming Sofa Bar is a great meeting place where you can snuggle down into deep sofas, scattered with fur cushions and relax in front of a burning log fire all day long and treat yourself to delicious pastries and chocolates or the explosive 3-D cocktails, expertly prepared by the bartender. In pursuit of culinary excellence to suit all tastes, the hotel has created three very distinct styles of cuisine: the Pas de l’Ours offers delicious cuts of roasted meats and lunch on the open air terrace by the slopes. Alternatively the Coin Savoyard serves traditional cuisine including speciality cheese dishes and fondues. For gourmet delights and sophisticated intimacy, Le Table de l’Ours, with its one Michelin star and two Gaultmillau awards, offers superb French cuisine prepared by head chef Anthony Maubert.

Alps [Comfort Zone] Spa The hotel boasts one of the largest spas in the French Alps – 800 sqm entirely dedicated to relaxing mind, body and soul and soothing away the muscle fatigue from a hard day’s skiing. Indulge yourself with de-stressing treatments in one of the eleven treatment rooms while expert therapists massage away aches and pains using the four sublime Aromasoul rituals inspired from around the world and products from luxury spa brand [Comfort Zone]. Then enjoy the spa’s relaxation facilities including the spacious marble Hammam, Jacuzzis and saunas. After that you can unwind in the enormous swimming pool with its large glass windows or sip a calming herbal tea in the relaxation areas. Alternatively, take active rest and shape up for the slopes with a workout in the fitness room using the latest exercise equipment.

Maldivian Love Islands Looking for the perfect romantic holiday? The Maldives is the ultimate playground for loved-up couples, says Terri Cody-Owen

F

rom your luxurious beach or water villa you can spot couples snorkelling together, holding hands over coral reefs teeming with marine life. Down on the beach lovers snuggle in rope hammocks, sheltered from the mid-day sun by coco palms. And as the sun sets, the beach is transformed into a candle-lit restaurant as couples dine al fresco beneath clear moonlit skies. Is this the most romantic place in the world? Yes. This is the Maldives. In the Maldives, Mother Nature has created perfection, which the Maldivian government is carefully nurturing for the enjoyment of tourists. Hotels are built using natural materials indigenous to the islands and everywhere the lush vegetation has been preserved, marine life protected and beaches groomed and extended to create paradise on Earth.

Spa pampering Sun-drenched Robinson Crusoe islands with white powder beaches, tall palms and dazzling lagoons are quite simply the ultimate place to fall in love all over again. Lovers will adore being indulged further with bespoke treatments in world-class spas – including the world’s first underwater and over-water spas. The spa culture in the Maldives is second to none.

Marriage blessings Not surprisingly, the Maldives is a favourite place for wedding ceremonies and honeymoons. Although you can’t legally marry in the Maldives because the Maldives Family Law does not accommodate marriages of religions other than Islam, the breath-taking scenery and sheer luxury of the resorts makes this a wonderful place for beach blessings and romantic non-religious ceremonies, which can be arranged through your hotel or wedding planner. These ceremonies can take place in a choice of exotic locations - from unspoilt powder beaches and tiny sandbank islands to catamarans at sea and even during diving excursions on the coral reefs.

Year-round perfection The Maldives is a tiny island nation of around 1,190 islands, grouped into 26 natural atolls scattered across the middle of the Indian Ocean, south of India and Sri Lanka in an area covering 90,000 sq km. The islands (of which only 200 are inhabited) are low-lying, with the highest point just eight feet above sea level. However, coral reefs provide a natural defence against wind and waves, forming lagoons that provide some of the world’s finest opportunities for snorkelling, swimming, diving and water sports. The capital, Male, the seat of the government, is located at the centre of the atoll chain, and provides an excursion opportunity for visitors wanting to mingle with the natives and shop for local produce and crafts. There are two main seasons in the Maldives, a dry and a wet monsoon. From December to May the weather is sunny and fairly dry, whereas between June and November there are occasional brief downpours followed by sunshine. Temperatures range from mid-20s to mid-30s and peak in April and May. So whatever time of year you visit, you can be sure of warmth and sunshine.

Getting there Scheduled international flights to The Maldives from the UK include Air Oman, Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines, British Airways and Quatar Airlines. There are also a number of charter flights. Most international flights have stopovers in Dubai or Sri Lanka before landing at Male Airport. Transports to the island resorts are either via luxury motor launch or seaplane, depending on the distance from Male. Spa World editor Terri Cody-Owen and husband Martin flew business class courtesy of Kuoni with Oman Air, via Muscat, with airport transfers by motor launch arranged directly with Reethi Rah and Baros resorts and seaplane flights with Maldivian Air Taxi to Lily Beach and The Beach House. The island is so stunningly beautiful that if you were given an endless supply of powder white sand, turquoise water and an abundance of lush vegetation and asked to create perfection, you would create One & Only Reethi Rah, it’s the most exquisite island on the planet. After a smooth flight via Muscat with Oman Air, Martin, my husband and I were transferred from Male aboard the resort’s 55 ft luxury yacht on a 75-minute voyage to the resort where the boat moored in the marina outside reception. On the approach to the resort the view of One & Only Reethi Rah, with its unique shape, is truly breathtaking. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, the resort has a stunning six-kilometre coastline fringed by 109 acres of lush tropical forest and twelve picture-perfect bays of soft sandy beaches and crystal clear lagoons – ample space to ensure that each and every villa has an ocean view, a generous private veranda and over-water deck or stretch of powder-soft sand.

64

Toasting the sunset This all-villa resort offers guests an unrivalled level of style, choice and unprecedented privacy that is especially essential on an intimate romantic honeymoon, or for couples and VIP guests who don’t want to be disturbed. Accommodation is in Beach and Water Villas. Beach villas enjoy direct views of the ocean and a private stretch of beach, whilst Water Villas and Grand Water Villas are on stilts perched over the lagoon connected to the island by walkways. Water Villas have split-level decks with netting suspended like hammocks from its edges for perfect breezy sunbathing. We were lucky enough to be staying in a Water Villa on the sunset side of the island, which meant that we enjoyed incredibly romantic sunsets nights, which we toasted with a glass of chilled bubbly – of course! The luxurious villas have every mod con you could possibly need – including flat screen satellite TV, iPod docking stations and personal butler service. Our Water Villa was situated in a romantic backwater, reached by a short journey along sandy roadways that looked, at a glance, like snow pistes. Just a few yards from our villa the simply heavenly Grand Beach beckons. This vast, crescent shaped, sandy bay is fringed with lush vegetation, which conceals the occasional beach

villa. However, we rarely saw other holidaymakers on that long stretch of white sand, so it felt as if we had our own private beach.

Cycle of health Outside each villa, two bicycles are parked for guests to cycle around the island. This is not only a fun way of getting around but it’s also great for keep fit and healthy as guests follow the sandy cycle paths through the vegetation to various facilities, including the main restaurants, spa, water sports centre and hotel reception. Those with less energy can opt to use the golf buggy taxis that pick up and drop off visitors at their beach and water villas.

Restaurants At the centre of the island, the Reethi Restaurant is set in thatched over-water pavilions and offers dining at its best with a glorious fusion of Far Eastern, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, and a cellar housing 18,000 bottles of the world’s greatest wines. Romantic dining is magical at Fanditha, a Middle Eastern restaurant that serves healthy char grills and mezze in a chilled beachside ambience with live DJ entertainment. Guests are encouraged to flump and laze with toes in the sand on Arabian divans and hammocks.

My personal favourite is the Tapasake Japanese over water restaurant, where freshly-caught sushi and sashimi are served in a relaxed, romantic setting overlooking a stunning bay from which guests can watch the sun set over the ocean. Or you can simply snuggle up and enjoy villa dining 24 hours a day.

Spa The magnificent One & Only Spa by ESPA, is set within a tranquil spa garden, with open-air relaxation pavilions and a Chi Pavilion, positioned over the lagoon where complimentary Kundalini yoga and meditation classes, with resident yoga guru Coco Ryoko Maruno, take place in a magnificent setting to the sound of lapping waves. At the spa, guests are encouraged to embark on a physical, mental and spiritual journey, which begins with a tailor-made wellbeing consultation and takes them through a range of revitalising holistic rituals and treatments, including Thai massage, European aromatherapy and Ayurveda. Treatments take place in eight treatment pavilions and two double over-water spa suites. There are separate resting areas for men and women, each with a hot vitality pool, crystal steam room, ice fountain and stone sauna.

Infinity pool

One of the spa’s speciality treatments is the totally natural Bastien Pedicure, created by the French ‘foot virtuoso’ Bastien Gonzales, who is internationally famous for his glamorous and unique approach to foot treatments and product ranges for feet, hands and nails. The pedicure is almost medical in its approach to the health of the feet, and nails are beautifully manicured and buffed rather than varnished to create the ultimate ‘barefoot chic’.

Never a dull moment With a fully equipped state of the art gym, a wide range of complimentary water sports, including canoes, kayaks, pedal and paddle boats, windsurfers and snorkelling equipment, a PADI dive centre and an international Tennis Academy with two floodlit synthetic grass tennis courts and beach volleyball and badminton, there’s no shortage of things to do. And if that’s not enough, excursions are also available for deep sea fishing trips and visits to the capital, Male.

Wedded bliss For those wanting to exchange vows in paradise, One&Only Reethi Rah offers ceremonial blessings in the dedicated wedding pavilion under a traditional thatched roof adorned with fresh flowers and orchids; at Reethi Restaurant; or on one of the resort’s 12 picture-perfect beaches, down a petal-strewn ‘aisle’ through a fresh flower arch. At the end of each ceremony, the ‘bridal buggy’ whisks the new couple off to enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner under the stars on a private beach.

Beach Villa

For ease of planning, The Legendary Sunset Wedding is a complete wedding package, which utilises the service of the resort’s Celebration Consultant. Newlyweds will also cherish the chance to escape to a private sandbank for a romantic moonlit dinner, or a seaplane journey to a deserted island.

Baros

B

aros, a stunning little coral island, is most definitely a lovers retreat. The profile of the average guest is under thirty, successful and very much in love

Baros prides itself on being almost totally dedicated to the privacy and enjoyment of couples, especially honeymooners – at every turn you will witness displays of true love as couples snuggle up in hammocks, stroll hand in hand along the beach or enjoy romantic meals under the moonlight. My husband and I transferred to Baros by boat, where we discovered a lush, tropical island, illuminated by bright sunshine, set in the shimmering waters of a shallow lagoon. The island is in the North Male Atoll; close Male, yet it couldn’t be less similar to the buzzing capital. On Baros a peaceful tranquillity descends, and with no traffic, no pool, no motor sports or loud music, just the sound of lapping waves and a gentle breeze, it is clear that this island has been designed as a place to flump and relax amidst nature’s elements. One of its most striking natural elements is the oval-shaped house reef, rich and alive with marine life, which is so close to the shore that even non-divers can swim to it and spend hours effortlessly snorkelling.

Beach versus Over-Water A golf buggy transferred us to our beachside villa, winding its way along sandy pathways through exotic vegetation to a timber and sandstone villa, hidden from view by green foliage and tropical blooms. The beach villa was small, but chic with a king size bed, snug patio equipped with sun

66

loungers and a stunning open-air bathroom with waterfall shower and trendy freestanding bathtub. Once on our patio, the beach beckoned just a few yards away, with the turquoise lagoon beyond, enticing us to take a dip, which of course we did! During our stay we were fortunate enough to experience both beachside and over-water villa accommodation – two contrasting experiences. We moved to a luxurious Water Villa on stilts over the lagoon, reached via a wooden walkway. The Water Villa offered a secluded terrace with total privacy and views out to sea, with steps down into the water allowing us a quick dip whenever we wanted to cool off. Absolutely ideal for loved-up couples!

Wining & dining Romantic dining is an intrinsic part of the Baros experience, with a superb choice of first class restaurants, all set on stilts over the lagoon. The contemporary Lighthouse is the flagship restaurant offering modern fusion cuisine with Asian and Mediterranean influences and a Lighthouse Lounge Martini and Champagne bar with ambient jazz music and 360-degree ocean views. The Lime Restaurant is thatched, arched and open-sided and serves breakfast and all-day dining, while Cayenne Grill specialises in alfresco dining in thatched gazebos and hosts traditional Maldivian Nights every Saturday. The Sails Bar is situated under the shade of palms and serves refreshing drinks all day. In the evening mellow background music transforms this area into the perfect place for couples to snuggle in the soft furnishings or hammocks, which sway gently in the evening breeze.

Aquum Spa The spa is a Zen space, set in the natural surroundings of a teak atrium and is a sanctuary of calm where couples are invited to renew their strength and inner wellness through spa treatments. Verdant gardens, water features and spa cocoons lie behind the spa’s intricately carved doors. In one of the exotic couples-treatments rooms, my husband and I enjoyed couples massages. I indulged in a Thai Massage, while he had a more traditional body massage. The Thai massage is one of my favourite spa treatments, offering the stretching benefits of yoga and Pilates without the effort as the therapist massages and manipulates my body into various shapes to increase my flexibility.

Lily Beach Resort & Spa

F

or affordable luxury, the all-new Lily Beach Resort & Spa at Huvahendhoo is a great choice for an unforgettable romantic spa break. This pretty little island is in Ari Atol , just a short seaplane hop from Male. We flew to Lily Beach by Maldivian Airways seaplane, which landed in the turquoise lagoon in front of the resort, and pulled up alongside a floating pontoon to dispatch the passengers. The 25-minute flight had been mesmerizing as we flew over spectacular islands and unique formations of reefs – infinite memories to last a lifetime. Soon a traditional dhoni arrived from Lily Beach to transport us across to the island. The resort officially opened in March 2009 as a Luxury ‘Platinum Plan’ Resort, a Premium All-Inclusive resort that is the first of its kind in the Maldives. The resort’s ‘Platinum Plan’ offers a fantastic array of quality services including premium wines and spirits, sumptuous dining experiences, handcrafted excursions, sporting activities and the spa. All the island resorts in the Maldives have a their own distinctive character. Lily Beach was fun, relaxed and thriving, yet couples could still find their own intimate solitude if they prefer to keep to themselves.

Glass bottom villas

Fit and beautiful

Luxurious accommodation is in Beach Villas and Over Water Villas. We stayed in a beautifully appointed Water Villa with state-of-the-art bathroom and amazing glass floor in the hallway, allowing breathtaking views of the marine life – which can range from colourful reef fish to six foot long stingrays.

The resort’s Tamara Spa boasts seven Over-Water spa pavilions – sanctuaries in which to refresh and rejuvenate your physical being.

Diner’s delight Lily Maa, the resort’s main open sided restaurant has sand floors, views of the lagoon, and showcases a wonderful variety of ‘world cuisine’, with two open-cooking stations adding variety to a sumptuous and relaxed dining experience. For a more romantic meal, Tamarind offers distinctive fine dining with signature dishes and a wonderful selection of fine wines. You may just wish to curl up with your loved one in romantic seclusion, but for a more lively experience, The Spirit bar is an ideal spot for chilling out. Sandy floors, day loungers and tastefully selected lounge music make it a very inviting venue to spend your evenings.

In the spa a team of handpicked therapists ensure that you and your loved one are pampered with invigorating signature treatments. You can also get fit in the gym, or enjoy water sports including canoeing, windsurfing, sailing and exhilarating banana-boat rides! There’s also a floodlit tennis court, table tennis, darts, billiards/pool, beach volleyball and a fully equipped Dive Centre, plus two freshwater swimming pools with bars. There’s not a chance of being bored for a moment! Or why not just soak in your own private Jacuzzi together, as we did, and watch the spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean!

The Beach House

T

ucked away in Haa Alifu Atoll, the northern most Atoll of the Maldives, where tourism has barely touched the soft white sands of the lush, picture-perfect islands, exciting things have been happening. Following a full renovation by Waldorf Astoria, the once privately-owned Beach House has unveiled its chic new look with a luxuriously contemporary design, whilst retaining the charm and tradition indigenous to the Maldives. My husband and I were whisked from Male Airport on a half-hour domestic flight over increasingly deserted islands and breathtaking Atolls as we headed to the remotest corner of the Maldives, before landing at a tiny island airport in Haa Alifu Atoll. Here we were met with a speedboat for the short hop to The Beach House. It’s worth mentioning that since our visit, The Beach House has now acquired its own seaplane to fly guests directly to the resort – which will speed up the journey immensely.

A love affair It was love at first sight when we landed on the jetty at The Beach House, and received a warm welcome from the attentive staff, who checked us in and showed us to our luxurious west facing Over-Water villa. The process of unwinding and relaxing began immediately we stepped off the boat. Sleek and stylish, yet delightfully tropical, The Beach House has been designed to offer

70

unparelled luxury to the discerning few – most visitors to the Maldives stay within the more commercialised Male Atoll. Being here felt like a wonderful privilege. The stunningly beautiful boutique-style resort offers bare-foot sophistication against a backdrop of natural beauty – with a spectacularly wide stretch of white sandy beach plunging into the turquoise lagoon, complemented with an un-spoilt jungle-filled interior. It’s a place where nature has been preserved, nurtured and enhanced. Accommodation comprises 83 contemporary thatched villas and suites, each with a private pool and butler to attend to every need. Beach Villas are tucked away behind the lush, tropical vegetation for the ultimate privacy and shade. Water Villas stretch out on stilts over the tranquil lagoon and offer indoor-outdoor living space with sundecks, a private Jacuzzi facing the ocean and steps down to the sea allowing guests the opportunity to swim or snorkel in the bath-warm, crystal clear waters below.

With four excellent restaurants to choose from offering organic, innovative cuisine from around the world, from pizzas to Maldivian feasts, dining at The Beach House is a celebration. Each restaurant is in a stunning setting, either beachside or poolside – there’s even a Wine Cellar restaurant which is a treat for wine buffs.

All day entertainment Un-spoilt reefs provide world-class diving opportunities and two additional uninhabited private islands offer the ideal escape for a romantic castaway experience or even a blessing ceremony. At The Beach House a selection of unique facilities keep all ages amused – from bungee trampolines to a golf simulator and kids club. Or you may simply like to bathe in the warm sunshine on the secluded beach with a good book!

Wining, dining & cocktails

For active rest you can choose from an abundance of water sport free of charge including kayaking, snorkelling, windsurfing and sailing. Additional motorised sports such as waterskiing and jetski safaris are available at extra charge.

Tucked away in our romantic Water Villa, we enjoyed luxury, privacy and total relaxation. Our nightly entertainment was to immerse ourselves in the bubbles of our personal Jacuzzi at sunset with a cocktail before strolling to one of the superb restaurants for dinner – often a candle-lit table on the beach beneath a canopy of stars.

Entertainment continues into the evening with live performers, including the local Maldivian band with their drum extravaganza, who invite guests to join in and have a go on the drums. I have great holiday snaps of my husband trying his hand at beating out a rhythm with his new ‘bandmates’!

Perfect pools With two luxurious swimming pools, guests are spoilt for choice. Both are totally different in style and have poolside bars and restaurants. The infinity pool stretches out into the ocean and is perfect for swimming and watching the sun set, while the enchanting Amazon pool has been sympathetically created to fit in with the indigenous vegetation and, like a river in the rainforest, it weaves its way through the overhanging trees.

Tea time The Waldorf Astoria has introduced a new Maldivian Art Gallery and Café, where the serving of traditional afternoon tea is a memorable event – Local Maldivian ingredients are used to create a range of delicacies resembling English favourites, but with a tropical twist, from Breadfruit cake to a Maldivian Pine Nut and Coconut Scone. A selection of hot teas and local juices are served to complement the menu. The Art Gallery is home to local visiting artists who will showcase their work.

Rainforest Spa A trip to the Rainforest Spa, tucked away in the centre of the island, is a sensory experience. It reflects the local healing culture of the Islands using Aromatherapy, Ayurveda and traditional Maldivian philosophies. Guests begin their spa visit with a consultation to ascertain their emotional and physical needs. They are then prescribed treatments from a range of massage, body and facial treatments, such as the signature ‘Great Escape’ a 90 minute aromatherapy package, using products from UK skincare brand Aromatherapy Associates, that combines an intense massage ritual together with lymphatic drainage. And the ‘Body Clock’, an invigorating 90 minute jet-lag treatment for those still recovering from their journey.

dotted around the resort. Beach Villas are set in tropical gardens, while Water Villas are set on stilts over the lagoon with private plunge pools and sundecks. For the ultimate in pure indulgence, couples wishing to have spa treatments in the privacy of their villa can stay in one of the 21 Spa Water Villas in the Spa Retreat. These villas have their own couples massage room and are connected to The Spa Retreat and Spa Restaurant by wooden walkways.

For a more spiritual experience, you can have a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor who will prescribe treatments such as the Shirodhara, a sensual treatment where a stream of warm herbal oil is continuously poured on the forehead for the ultimate stress-relief. Or you could opt for the local speciality – a range of traditional Maldivian remedies, using natural ingredients from the island’s trees and plants, which harness fresh coconut, banana and tropical fruits, complemented by signature potions from local healer, Dr Hassan Qasim.

The beautifully-laid table is bedecked with your favourite flowers. The menu is anything you fancy. What would you prefer? Perhaps fresh fruit, freshly baked pastries, Scottish salmon, smoked kippers, bacon and eggs? Just let your butler know and the attentive staff will ensure you start your day in your favourite way. You could cruise to the One & Only Reethi Rah island resort, choosing a relaxing lunch at one of its superb restaurants, or indulge yourself at the Soneva Fushi Resort & Spa for a day of pampering in the sublime Six Senses Spa. Then further south there’s the Conrad Maldives Resort & Spa. On Sultans Way you can enjoy them all. Alternatively, the perfect, uninhabited islands offer you an opportunity for total escape into a pristine natural environment. You can work on your tan, let the sand run through your toes and hear the sounds of paradise. The crew will set up a moonlight barbecue for you under the ink-blue starry skies and can even make comfortable sleeping arrangements for you to spend the night on the deserted sandbank if you wish. If you yearn for some action, you can pump some adrenalin on the yacht’s own jet skis. Perhaps a spot of fishing from the yacht at dawn? Or you can swim, snorkel or enjoy the scuba diving with a guide who will explain the

magical underwater environment of the world’s most spectacular coral reefs. You’ll even be able to feed the colourful fish by hand. After the day’s activities, you’ll be ready for freshly prepared canapés and an aperitif, so head up to the fly bridge with its panoramic views and prepared to be spoiled – you might like a three-piece jazz ensemble to play while you select dinner from a menu restricted only by your imagination. Or perhaps you would prefer peace and tranquillity while you listen to the sound of the ocean and witness the last of the sun’s rays. As the sun sets and the azure sky overhead is streaked with an awesome display of cirrus clouds in a haze of purple and tangerine, it’s time to wind down again as you glide majestically between the islands. This is the perfect time to sip chilled, vintage Dom Perignon Champagne as you relax on the sundeck. Pre-dinner cocktails are served in Sultans Way’s stunning saloon – perhaps to the chilled-out sounds on the Bang and Olufsen surroundsound system. Dressing for dinner is optional, but the food,

fine wines and setting are guaranteed to be spectacular, whether dinner is served in the opulent saloon or on a deserted sandbank with candles on the beach and a private table, with a succulent choice of fresh oysters or caviar followed by lobsters or Aberdeen Angus steak cooked over open flames in a fire pit. This is more than romance: it’s pure, undiluted magic. Say goodnight to a fabulous day with a Napoleon brandy or a top quality 30-year-old malt, then cuddle down into the most cosy bed you’ve ever experienced and be gently rocked into a deep sleep. This is flotation therapy at its best. Sultans Way 007 is for people who are discriminating and will settle for nothing but the very best in life. If you want a vacation that will really float your boat, then this is it. Hiring one of the Sultans Way fleet starts at £6,000 GBP per day excluding alcoholic drinks. Everything else is included. So, if you can, you must...

Desert calm You may think you’ve been whisked back to the future when you take a spa break in glitzy Dubai, says Adele Carnell

D

ubai is Gotham City meets Las Vegas against a golden desert backdrop – with luxury spas, non-stop sunshine and an abundance of glamour.

Batman would not have looked out of place against Dubai’s futuristic glass skyscrapers that reach into the cloudless Arabian skyline. However, despite certain similarities in its architecture, Gotham City’s sinister atmosphere doesn’t have the appeal of Dubai’s glitzy style and energy.

There’s no doubt about it, Dubai is one of the most vibrant cities of the world. But if it’s calm and tranquillity you are seeking, you will find plenty of relaxation and pampering in the many luxurious spa havens in Dubai’s top hotels. Dubai enjoys a central position in the modern world, where Europe meets Asia in the Middle East. It’s the gateway to the world, a diverse and multicultural society with influences of the world’s cultures and traditions, blended with the charm and adventure of Arabia. This global geographical advantage is reflected in the spa treatments on offer in its spas – from Swedish massages and Swiss facials to Indian Ayurvedic and Thai spa rituals. With so much variety, no wonder Dubai is becoming a number one destination for spa lovers. Whether you are in Dubai on business, a family holiday, a shopping trip or luxury spa break, Dubai has something to offer everyone – a perfect yearround climate, top class hotels, superb facilities, a variety of sports and leisure activities and excellent shopping in a friendly, safe and virtually crime-free city.

Shopping & skiing If shopping is your thing, Dubai definitely won’t disappoint. There are a number of large shopping malls in the city, including Deira City Centre, Mercato, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall and Ibn Battuta Mall, as well as the Gold Souk. But be warned, if you have come to Dubai to bag a bargain you’ll be hard pushed to find one! Dubai is not cheap, though it does offer an exceptional amount of choice and quality. And if you fancy a spot of snow skiing after you’ve shopped, believe it or not, you can do that too at Mall of the Emirates, which offers the world’s first indoor black ski piste!

Eating out The diversity of cuisine in Dubai is a reflection of the cosmopolitan nature of the society. Arab food is very popular and is available everywhere in the city, from the small shawarma diners in Deira and Al Karama to the upscale restaurants in Dubai’s many hotels. Fast food, South Asian, Chinese cuisines are also very popular and are widely available. And if you fancy a McDonalds, you can do that too! The sale of alcohol is restricted, however it is readily available in bars and restaurants within four or five-star hotels. Dromoland Castle

It’s a fact... Many know The Palms as international icons, but few realise they were created to help solve Dubai’s beach shortage. The Ruler of Dubai drew a sketch of a palm tree, realising its fronds would provide more beach frontage than a traditional circular island. From that moment the Palm islands were no longer a vision but a project that would rival any on the planet. The Sheikh ensured that the development of the Palms went ahead to became a symbol of just how advanced Dubai had become. The Palms has changed the very texture of the city with landmarks of ingenuity from the air and from the land, including residential communities, unique retail offerings, investment opportunities and Atlantis the Palm – one of the world’s most spectacular five-star resort hotels. www.atlantisthepalm.com

One & Only Royal Mirage

C

onsidered one of Dubai’s most stylish beach resorts, One & Only Royal Mirage is set within a 65-acre estate of lush landscaped gardens overlooking Palm Island Bay in the bustling heart of ‘new Dubai’ along a kilometer stretch of private coastline.

Arabian Court and Palace

One & Only Royal Mirage is in a glamorous setting, representing an oasis of calm in the heart of the bustling city, with a backdrop of the modern skyscrapers of Dubai’s Media City and overlooking the pale turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf and the famous Palm beyond.

In contrast, The Arabian Court, an ancient dwelling with 162 charismatic guest rooms and 10 suites, is illusive, mysterious and designed with dramatic architecture. It is set amidst a landscape of fountains, walkways and lush gardens and features Al Koufa, an Arabian Fortress, and a spectacular outdoor ‘amphitheatre’, ideal for weddings and events.

A choice of three The hotel consists of three equally distinctive properties: The Palace, the Arabian Court and the Residence & Spa, all offering the magic of Arabia with understated elegance and exclusive charm, plus superb accommodation and world-class dining experiences in luxurious dining rooms, or outdoor by the pool or beach.

84

The Palace, with its 246 rooms and suites is the largest of the three properties, and is popular with families because of its excellent facilities, including swimming pools, water sports centre, tennis courts, golf putting green and ‘Kids only’ club.

A leading residence The Residence & Spa belongs to the ‘Leading Small Hotels of the World’ association, and is an exclusive, boutique-style sanctuary, which is ideal for couples and honeymooners. The Arabian-style private residences of 18 suites and 32 Prestige rooms all face the sea and are cared for by a dedicated team. The Residence has its own private gardens and pool for privacy and

tranquillity – look out for celebrities keeping a low -profile, including Nicola Roberts, from Girls Aloud.

Indulgent spa The resort’s magnificent spa, set on two levels of a freestanding building, with towering domes and carved arches – it’s a temple of well-being, set amidst palm trees and water fountains. On the upper floor, a beauty spa offers ladies, gentlemen and couples treatments, whilst on the lower floor an authentic Oriental Hammam offers the opportunity to enjoy the traditional heat treatment, which has long played a part in the cultural life of eastern cities. There’s also a hair salon and fitness centre.

Desert Palm

A

way from the towering skyscrapers and hustle and bustle of Dubai, and set in the graceful, manicured surroundings of a private polo estate, Desert Palm is a chic, understated boutique hotel, which basks easily in the desert landscape to provide a refreshing, avant-garde contrast to the conventional flamboyance of downtown Dubai. The resort, which is owned by Per Aquum, is situated just minutes from Dubai, in landscaped gardens with an infinity pool and spectacular views of the Dubai skyline. And if you want to join the elite polo set, there are four polo fields and a riding school, plus stabling for over 300 horses.

86

The tranquil retreat is intimate and romantic and ideal for spa-lovers and honeymoons. It features 26 naturally modern guestrooms and villas, with superb restaurants offering outstanding culinary delights and, of course, the fabulous Lime Spa.

Perfect relaxation in the spa Lime Spa complements the Desert Palm’s luxurious experience, offering the first Halal certified spa products, which are also 100 per cent organic. Colour therapy is featured throughout, with signature rituals designed to nurture, heal and restore. At Lime, guests are encouraged to try something new; treatments are personalised to the individual

with a strong emphasis on the integrated wellness approach, incorporating healing spa therapies, beauty services and relaxation. Special treatments have been designed for muscle-weary horse riders and polo players, and relaxing treatments for those who simply want to switch off and be thoroughly pampered. There is also an extensive wet area, ‘Sublime’ featuring steam, sauna, colour therapy showers, ice plunge and heated beds.

Cruise therapy Thalassotherapy, and the healing power of the sea has always been a favourite stress-busting spa treatment. Now spa lovers are floating their troubles away with the ultimate thalassotherapy – a spa cruise! The popularity of cruising is at an all time high. And with so many cruise ships now incorporating spectacular spas into their offering, it’s no wonder spa cruises are now a favourite way to see the world. Imagine languishing in a bubbling hot tub, watching the sun set over the Pacific, or sweating out the toxins in a sauna with a glass panel offering panoramic views of the Med. Perhaps you’d prefer head to toe pampering in luxurious treatment rooms with a range of spa therapies – from Ayurvedic massages to divine facials, even Botox and fillers. You’ll return looking as well as feeling a million dollars! With no less than 16 new ships due to launch in 2010, the choice of cruise styles and destinations has never been greater. And with more than 300 ships already cruising around the world, there is bound to be a ship type, cruise style and itinerary to suit you.

The Cruise Show If you are thinking of booking a cruise this year, then head down to The Daily Telegraph Cruise Show at London’s Olympia between 27-18 March and discover your perfect cruising experience. With the major cruise lines and specialist cruise lines exhibiting at the show, Cruise offers you the chance to check out the hottest destinations, newest ships and latest itineraries; from fun-filled family holidays on state-of-the-art resort ships, ultra-luxury ships with more intimate options, a slow travel experience on the rivers and waterways of the world and expedition cruises to the Polar regions or the Galapagos Islands. There’s a whole host of cruise options to choose from, including short taster cruises, trans-Atlantic crossings, small ship voyages that visit smaller ports not suitable for bigger cruise ships, tall ships for cruising under sail and exotic river cruises along the Amazon river.

Special offers, special deals Cruise is the only travel show that is dedicated to bringing the whole industry together to provide an exciting and informative showcase for the consumer, not to mention some special deals and exclusive offers that can’t be found anywhere else. Attractions at Cruise include: Spa & Relax Zone – sponsored by MSC cruises; Sky Travel Meet the Experts Travel Theatre – practical and impartial advice from the experts to help you get the most out of your next cruising adventure; River and Specialist Cruising Theatre – hear talks on destination hotspots such as Russia, Europe, China and the Amazon. The cruise lines will also be presenting their new ships in the show’s New Ships Travel Theatre – so you will hear about: Royal Caribbean cruise line’s Oasis of the Seas, P&O’s Azura, MSC’s Magnifica, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth, Celebrity Cruises, Eclipse, Holland America Lines, Nieuw Amsterdam, Seabourn’s Sojourn and more. There will also be chances to interact and try your skills on the Rock Climbing Wall, one of the most exciting activities available on Royal Caribbean International Ships and your driving skills on the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines virtual golfing features.

Further information Cruise takes place at London’s Olympia, Hammersmith Road, London W14 on Saturday March 27, from 10am-6pm and on Sunday March 28, from 10am-4pm. Tickets cost £6 purchased in advance and £10 on the door. Under 16s are free. www.cruisingshow.co.uk

Whether you’re planning your first holiday at sea or are a seasoned cruiser wanting to learn more about the exciting new ships being launched, Cruise is an exhibition that will inspire and inform you, and guide you effortlessly in the right direction. Cruise lines big and small will be on-hand to help with your decision-making and there will be a packed programme of talks, lectures and Q&A sessions.

Taste of the Seas Never been cruising? Try a Taster Cruise and once you’ve caught the bug you’ll be a spa cruise junkie forever, as Terri Cody-Owen discovered on a mini-cruise around the English Channel If the thought of five days of floating around the English Channel doesn’t float your boat, then Holland America lines mini-cruise aboard the plush MS Eurodam is bound to change your mind. I wasn’t too excited at the prospect of cruising to such near-flung ports as Guernsey, Zeebrugge and Cherbourg when I was invited to join a Charms of the Channel taster press trip aboard one of Holland and America Line’s luxurious cruise liners. However, as soon as I stepped aboard I realised I was in for a pampering treat, both in and out of its Greenhouse Spa. Eurodam is the culmination of Holland America Line’s Signature of Excellence, offering the best premium amenities afloat such as four restaurants, including an elegant two-tier dining room and a pan-Asian speciality restaurant, exclusive private cabanas around pool areas and a spectacular Greenhouse spa and fitness centre.

90

In Dover Port, I met up with eight fellow journalists who were also embarking on the Channel voyage. We were welcomed aboard around mid-day with a glass of bubbly and a warm greeting from the crew. Our team of journalists were each shown to our assigned cabins – impressive balcony staterooms, which had surprisingly spacious bathrooms, a living room area and all mod cons. Once aboard, a feeling of relaxation took over as I sunk into the luxurious surroundings and entered a different pace of life. As the ship sailed I left the stresses of everyday life in Dover and set off for a few days of carefree living.

Shore thing One of the great things about cruising is the ever changing landscape and the possibilities that wait at each port. Shore excursions are available to suit all tastes, ages and fitness levels – from energetic bike rides to historical visits to stately homes and city tours. It’s best to book all excursions prior to your cruise to avoid disappointment as they fill up quickly. On our mini cruise, our first port of call was the busy port of Zeebrugge, with easy access to both picture-perfect Bruges and Brussels. We opted for a canal trip through historical Bruges, to admire its beautiful architecture from the network of canals that link the city – despite the fact it was pouring with rain onto our open boat, it was a fascinating and memorable day as we formed friendly bonds with fellow passengers and explored souvenir shops and cafes. Next stop, Cherbourg, which is gateway to historic Normandy and a great place to enjoy French cuisine and shopping. From here many people chose to visit the memorial fields where soldiers had fallen during the World Wars – a very moving and poignant experience. Last port of call was St Peterport in Guernsey – a bustling port full of yachts, pubs, cafes and shops where you can find the perfect souvenir – an authentic Guernsey sweater.

That’s entertainment!

Short and sweet

Back aboard the ship, the entertainment never stops. I would challenge anyone to be bored on a Holland America Line cruise ship! The only problem is fitting everything in to your daily schedule! Try a cooking class with an expert chef, who will teach you to prepare an elegant dinner party, or learn how to make a vacation video in a Digital Workshop, join in a Ping Pong tournament or test your knowledge in a Team Trivia Challenge. In the evening you can enjoy a cabaret in the Mainstage, or listen quietly to a string quartet, take a Line Dance class, try your luck in the casino or simply enjoy cocktails in one of the bars. The possibilities are endless.

At the end of the cruise, short though it was, I was refreshed and ready to go to my nearest travel agency to book a longer cruise for next year! During my taster, I had definitely acquired the taste!

Wining & dining The dining experience aboard the ship allows you the freedom to choose what suits your taste – you can opt for formal dining and dress up to the nines, or go freestyle in the self-service restaurant in a more relaxed attire. You may like to retire early with room service and a good film. With so much delicious food on offer, you may need a trip to the ship’s gymnasium to work off those extra calories!

Further information Terri enjoyed a four-night short break cruise on-board Holland America Line’s MS Eurodam, round trip from Dover visiting Zeebrugge, Cherbourg and Guernsey. The Eurodam will be cruising from Dover during summer 2010 and 2011 on longer cruises. Prices for an eight-night Norwegian Fjords and Scottish Highlands cruise departing 21st June 2010 start from £929 per person sharing a twin stateroom, full-board basis and visiting Geiranger, Hellesylt and Alesund (Norway), Invergordon and South Queensferry. Reservations: 0845 351 0557. www.hollandamerica.co.uk

Greenhouse pampering The Greenhouse Spa and Salon and the adjacent fitness gym were, of course, my main focus during the cruise (I am, after all, editor of Spa World!) and this superb facility, at the front of the ship, didn’t disappoint. State-of-the-art exercise equipment is in abundance in the gym, along with yoga, Pilates and aerobics classes. I booked into several fitness classes during the trip to make me feel less guilty about my consumption of fine cuisine and crisp white wines. Operated by Steiner Leisure, the Greenhouse Spa offers a wide range of health and beauty treatments in a haven of tranquillity. The wellness centre is as spacious as any spa on land, and is equally luxurious, with a comprehensive spa menu incorporating Elemis and La Therapie spa products. You can indulge in every type of therapy from Twilight Massages to 20-20-20 treatments, which combine three different 20-minute therapies into an hour-long session – choose from facials, neck & shoulder massage, Lime & Ginger scrub, Foot & Ankle massage, reflexology and back massage.
