How to spa 10 steps to wellness and relaxation

Time at the spa should be all about relaxation. Here’s how to make the most of your experience

1 2

Book well in advance

The last thing you want to do is turn up, only to find that the spa is fully booked. Most spa resorts have their menus online, so pick the treatments you want and book your slot well in advance – preferably before you travel.

Do your homework

If you’re unsure about what to book, drop the spa an email, or better still, give them a ring and the therapists will be able to offer you some guidance. Tell them what you want to achieve from your time in the spa and ask their advice about treatments and programmes that best suit your current physical, mental and emotional condition.

3 4

Medical history

If you have had a recent operation, are pregnant, have circulatory problems, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint problems or have suffered a recent injury it is important to let your therapist know before your treatment.

Prep your skin and body

Exposure to too much sun, waxing or shaving can all sensitize the skin, and cause some discomfort. Avoid too many rays and allow at least 24 hours after waxing. Avoid alcohol on the day of your treatment and avoid eating at least an hour before.

5

8

6

9 10

Enjoy the facilities

Most spas complement their treatment rooms with swimming and hydrotherapy pools, experience showers and thermal suites, so allow plenty of time to enjoy them – this will help you to relax as well as enhancing the efficacy and enjoyment of your therapy. If possible leave jewellery and mobiles in your room safe before heading to the spa.

To bare or not to bare?

Visiting a spa is an intimate experience, but not everyone feels comfortable having a treatment in their birthday suit. In most cases either nudity or wearing swimwear are both fine, it really depends on what you feel most comfortable doing. As well as robes and slippers, many spas provide disposable underwear. If you prefer wearing swimwear or your own panties, ensure you don’t mind them being covered in essential oils, mud and creams. However, its worth taking your costume to the spa so you can make use of any heat experience rooms and hydrotherapy pools.

7

Choosing your therapist

If you would prefer a male or female therapist mention this when booking your treatment. If you have enjoyed a treatment with a particular therapist, don’t be shy about asking for them again.

Go with the flow

If you are a spa novice then having a massage from a complete stranger can feel quite daunting, and often the urge is to retain control of your body and move arms and legs for your therapist – this is known as ‘holding on’. By placing confidence in your therapist and ‘letting go’ you will enjoy the experience that much more and gain greater wellness benefits too.

Get things right for you

This is your time and your treatment, so once you are lying down, make sure you are completely relaxed and at ease. If something is not quite right, such as the room temperature, lighting, music or pressure of the massage, let your therapist know.

Long-term benefits

A day in the spa can provide a real tonic, enhancing skin tone, soothing tired muscles, aiding relaxation and improving your general sense of wellbeing. It can also be the catalyst for a new, healthier approach that lasts a lifetime. Spas have programmes which can inspire to you to kickstart a regime of more exercise, healthier eating and having regular spa treatments to target issues such as cellulite more effectively.

Cyprus Steep yourself in luxury and relaxation at Ayii Anargyri. In the spring of 2009 Ayii Anargyri Spa resort opened to present the world with a sublime experience. Set in a valley of fragrant citrus groves and mature trees, the resort offers a unique retreat, a place of profound calm and the opportunity to enjoy the health-giving waters, which have benefited visitors for so many years. This adults-only boutique hotel offers accommodation for 150 guests, in Suites or Classic rooms, and has dedicated spa facilities in the grounds, a generous swimming pool and conference facilities for 50 people, plus an orthodox church available for weddings. Ayi Anargyri also offers a first-class gastronomic dining experience in its choice of restaurants serving modern cuisine, which takes its inspiration from the past, using fresh local produce in nutritious traditional local dishes – complemented by a comprehensive cellar of fine wines. Ayii Anargyri has something unique. From the Cyprus hillside, a mineral-rich spring carries the soothing waters renowned for generations for their healing qualities. This remarkable stream has been channelled to the new spa where it is combined in numerous treatments now advanced by modern science. The Spa was formally opened in 1649 by two brothers, Cosmas and Damianos, when it was still a monastery. Their generosity in offering treatment, often without thought of reward, gave rise to the name Anargyri – without silver. They became known locally as saints for their selfless acts. Eventually the monastery closed and it became a small inn where people could use the healing waters of Ayii Anargyri. Now the new luxury spa offers a variety of treatment rooms and therapies, exclusive Packages, Beauty and Serenity lounge, Cardio Fitness lounge and yoga sessions.

Cyprus When it comes to defining The Four Seasons Cyprus the keyword is ‘exclusivity’. And this certainly applies to the resort’s Shiseido Spa – the only one of its kind on the island and in the entire Eastern Mediterranean, and one of an exclusive group in the world to offer Shiseido’s Qi method concept. The spa’s simple, elegant design blends symmetry, graceful curves and calming neutrals, juxtaposed with black and vibrant reds to embody the very essence of Japan – the home of this premium spa brand. This corner of the Far East in the Eastern Med is comfortable and relaxed, easing away stress and fatigue in an instant. The Oriental concept of harmony, well-being and beauty focuses on the energy circulating in the body, known as Qi. Inspired by this cultural heritage, Shiseido has created the Qi method, which combines Shiatsu pressure points with Oshibori (warm, moist Japanese towels) and Western massage techniques to create a unique massage experience that regulates energy flow, inducing profound relaxation and a sense of total well-being, while enhancing the radiance of the skin. Each Shiseido Spa has a unique signature treatment, and the spa at Four Seasons Cyprus is no different. Shiseido’s Spa Serenity is an indulgent top-to-toe body and scalp treatment lasting two hours 30 minutes, including a Japanese foot bath ritual, Total Zen Delight full-body massage and Japanese Scalp and Shoulders Massage.

Palace Wellness offers privacy in its undisturbed treatment rooms and a lively meeting spot on the sundeck or in the restaurant and active sports areas. Palace Wellness has been created by Martha Wiedemann, who has used her 30 years of experience in the beauty and alternative therapy industry alongside her training in Ayurveda to provide a haven of wellness in the Alps. The new Palace Wellness design has been a huge success as it creates the wow-factor with its simple interior, which draws on the natural surroundings of the Engadin region using local stone and wood, with Alpine flowers being a pivotal inspiration in the concept. “We are letting the landscape be the painting,” says Martha Wiedemann. Each treatment room door bears the botanical name of a particular Engadin flower with an Alpine Garden at the heart of the Centre being the inspirational focal point. Two blissful treatments on the spa menu are the unique Rebalancing Massage, which involves being massaged on a waterbed while coloured lights stimulate the body’s chakras and the Shirodhara Experience where warm oil is drizzled over the forehead in a relaxing Ayurvedic ritual. The Fitness Centre has the latest fitness and cardio equipment, with personal training available.
