PLEASE JOIN US Saturday, April 25th at 7PM in the VENDOR’S HALL for the HONORING OF FELLOW MASSAGE THERAPISTS.

Welcome! Welcome to Fest 09! Our defining mission this weekend is to bring the industry together. Our Massage Symposium, at 7:30 am on Saturday morning in the vending hall, is just one unique aspect of our efforts to accomplish this by networking. Please bring this program with you to the Symposium. For this year’s attendees, we will give you free advertising for one year in our new online massage magazine, at www.massagenews.org. Just leave your business card at the registration desk. There are lots of door prizes to give away, so make sure to check the board at the prize center often. Every year we have grown and we are expecting around 1,000 therapists next year for our 5th anniversary, in Berea, KY. We ask every therapist to help, if you can. If you have a website, please link to the Festival site!!! Thanks to those who put up posters on your websites and spread the word. The 2010 Festival will be our largest event yet! We are looking for volunteers that would like to help organize next year from within your different states, let me know if you would like to help. It’s fun and there are awards, like free class registration. Instead of the early bird price ending this weekend, as usual, the early bird registration deadline, for 2010, has been extended until September 1, 2009! After that, it will be $492.00. By registering this weekend, you can get up to 24 hours of CE credits, 4 nights lodging & 4 days of meals for only $392......see details on the inside back cover of this program.

THE BRIDGE BUILDER An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening, cold and gray, To chasm, vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. “Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way; You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide -Why build you the bridge at the eventide?” The builder lifted his old gray head: “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pit-fall be, He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.” Will Allen Dromgoole

2009 Lifetime Massage Therapy Achievement Award Winner John Malinowski 1/27/32 - 12/15/08

Massage found John twenty-four years ago. As with most of us, and after many jobs, John found his passion and his obsession in finding answers to help people using massage therapy as his tools. His main modality was Touch For Health, but he also used kineseology, muscle energy release and orthobionomy. He knew the human body because he never quit studying. He inspired many youngsters to look down the road. John mesmerized people around the world with his knowledge and skills. He did this by being a “workshop junkie”. John was not big on Swedish massage. He wanted to know the problem because then he could find the “fix”. He wasn’t shy about going into a group of people, in his worldly travels, and helping all he could. His wife, Bernice, said, “There was never such a thing as a stranger to John. Everywhere we went, in airports, meetings and hotels, if I lost touch with him, I would just look for a cluster of people and there was John, doing muscle tests.” He proudly anticipated getting his 25-year AMTA pin this year in Orlando, Florida at the National Convention. He talked with so much pride of his love for AMTA and the pride he had in being a member. And all the changes he had seen happen in the profession. John was excited about the World Massage Festival. He was always there with his table, “doing the work.” “He was as good as they get and he cared”, said fellow therapists. He helped so many people feel better. And as he said many times, with a smile on his face, “Mike, what more could you ask for from life?” To know John was to love him, and we did.

My heritage is Santee, Dakota, Sioux and Irish so as a Metice (mixed blood); I come to the professional massage industry from a culture that is conscious of the need for personal time in ‘retreat’. Henblanche (Vision Quest) is our ceremony for spiritual retreat, where 4 days of fasting and prayer help rejuvenate the individual and lead to enlightenment. This might be a bit harsh for most modern day practitioners but one concept expressed in our Native American culture that helps remind us of the necessity of self-care is the belief in nurturing the sacred ‘Spaces-in-Between’. It is the space between lub and dub that makes the heart beat regular. The space between the drum beats that offer the dance rhythm. The space between inhale and exhale is the only space where oxygen nourishes the body. The space between dusk and dawn is the time of restoration and recovery. Obviously this list continues to infinity. So how does this principle apply to the massage industry? When we as therapists, educators and spa owners allow enough space between treatments, courses or events we are allowing the gifts of each action to be fully accepted and appreciated. In order for us to allow the client to release stress, aches, pains and fatigue on the massage table, we must be in a state of consciously balanced health.

is a powerful way to find your balance point. Do a few facial muscle stretches or manipulations using pressure point therapy techniques to reduce stress. Stretch your neck and shoulders during the treatment process in the spaces between each stroke. If you have come to a point on your client’s body where slow deep steady pressure is required, focus on the muscles in your own body that are involved in the stroke. Practice healthy body mechanics and know your limits. Without the Spaces-in-Between we have nothing to offer others. It is only through our own rejuvenation that we have the ability to share an abundance of health and wellness with others.

freshed and stimulated with new wisdom, knowing we have taken time for personal enrichment and rejuvenation. Of course the best Spaces-in Between are those we take in full retreat from the working world. Even the best General knows the value of ‘retreat’. Without this strategic move he would win very few battles and soon the war would be lost. Retreat means exactly that…to ‘withdraw from’ or to leave, so we must consider the need for retreat if we really want to ‘win’ in this game of life. When we believe in our profession and the message it carries about stress reduction, it becomes easy to allow ourselves some spaces- in- between for retreat.

To stay in balance during a hectic treatment day it is important to have a few moments for grounding, during the spaces between clients. This might be nothing more than a few stretches to relax our muscles, which can be done while changing linens. These stretches will release tension if we focus on our breath and inhale deeply, using our knowledge of isometric exercise and exhale fully. In the spaces between clients get a drink of refreshing water, stand extra tall, stretching your back and legs, close your eyes and count your slow, measured, swallows allowing your brain to defocus from organized thoughts for a moment. If possible take a few paces around the grounds; having your feet on the land

For many practitioners the financial cost of travel and retreat may seem like an unwarranted expense, but in actuality it is the best investment you can make in your future. To enjoy a long and healthy career it is important to rejuvenate often. Of course it is free to do most of the things mentioned in this article, so they should happen on a daily basis. Remember that the best self-care is receiving massage therapy from your colleagues; many of us are willing to trade sessions. Breathe in the fresh air and energy of excitement that always abounds when like minded folks gather to share knowledge by traveling to tax deductible, continuing education classes as often as possible. The Washington DC Centre of Indian Champissage™ presents the ORIGINAL Indian Head Massage training course Indian Champissage™ has been popular in India for over a thousand years. The head, neck, shoulders and upper back (areas where tension is more likely to accumulate) are gently, firmly and rhythmically massaged until the pressure simply melts away. This unique therapy combines physical and subtle massage with energy balancing to produce feelings of perfect peace and tranquility. It is a wonderful alternative to seated chair massage.

“JUST A LIL’ OLE’ PISSANT MASSAGE THERAPIST” by Vivian Madison-Mahoney, WMF Insurance Advisor I know, I know, I know what you’re thinking, “that is a terrible remark and Vivian is degrading herself and our massage profession with that statement.”

Creating better results keeps our clients returning, even after their insurance no longer pays, should you be accepting insurance for payment.

Why would she write something like this anyway? I’ll tell you why.

However I personally don’t believe all those titles makes anyone a better massage therapist or changes conditions, or even make us look better in the eyes of patients or others in the medical field. Most clients don’t even know what all those titles mean in the first place nor do they care so long as they receive a quality, affordable massage session.

Over the past two years especially, I have received hundreds, even thousands of emails and phone calls from therapists around the country introducing themselves by their “credentialing”. “I’m a medical massage therapist” “I’m an “orthopedic massage therapist,” I’m a “neuromuscular massage therapist” I’m a structural integration massage therapist” “I’m a pregnancy massage therapist” etc. etc. Do you see the one common denominator? We are all “massage therapists”. We are all Massage Therapists’ or Bodyworkers’ possibly specializing in specific techniques of massage therapy. Most of us out of massage school have had or continue to receive additional continuing education and find that specific training changes medically diagnosed conditions, helps people feel better and improves all sorts of conditions. It’s true, knowledge is power, and power in our hearts and hands changes things for others receiving our services. I think of how far our industry has moved forward since I became a massage therapist nearly 25 years ago. I personally came from being a “pissant massage therapist”, often ashamed to tell anyone that I was a massage therapist, to developing one of the most successful massage establishments of it’s kind in the nation for years. I’ve had the pride of ownership, pride of finally being able to earn a decent income, pride of caring for my family and for the therapists’ who worked for me. Who by the way were paid $20.00 to $35.00 an hour back in the late 80’s and 90’s when we were charging minor fees as compared to the $12.00 to $17.00 I hear so many say they make today working for others who are charging 3 times as much. I then moved on to the pride of now being able to help others in this business. I am one who very strongly believes in and feels the NECESSITY of continuing education, getting all the training, credentialing, certification, and licensing we can possibly obtain. It’s just as necessary to apply what we’ve learned to improve client care and to build our businesses. Continued training increases our knowledge and hopefully our ability to perform better.

The majority of referring physicians only want their patients to improve and be satisfied with the provider to whom they refer their patients. A title does not provide that, but training can. Because there are no true or legal titles in our profession such as “medical massage therapist” “orthopedic massage therapist” “structural integration massage therapist” etc, we are still all massage practitioners or bodyworkers’ specializing in the specific training one has received. Many courses even offer certification to prove one has had additional training in a certain technique or procedure. It is the practicing of and continued performance of these techniques or procedures that builds your reputation thus your business. The certification and certificates are a huge bonus and something to be extremely proud of! If there is just one thing I’ve learned from all my years of continuing education, it’s that I really don’t know anything. The more we learn the more we know there is to learn. I’ve had continuing education in courses such as neuromuscular therapy with Paul St. John, Bowen Techniques with Russell Sturgess from Australia, Structural Integration from Dr. Mike Vidal, DC, Myofascial Release with Pete Whitridge, CST with Dr. John Upledger and so many more courses with top notch trainers in our industry over the years including my massage school instructor, Alex Spassoff, who received a lot of his training from Paul St. John and Judith Walker-DeLany. With all of this training, I am still a “massage therapist” who specialized in “injury and disability cases.” Even though I established the first known medically oriented massage establishment in the nation while specializing in insurance related cases, received referrals from nearly 200 physicians from all specialties, I have, to this day, yet to refer to myself as a “Medical Massage Therapist.” Do I understand why massage therapists are prone to use titles? You bet I do. It is

to raise the bar, to improve their image, to get away from the negative connotations of “massage” that still follows us in this business. No one knows better than I how hard it is to push through the stigmatism of the illicit reputation that is still everywhere about us and nearly as strong as ever, depending on where you are, who you talk to, what show you watch on TV or what the news on any particular day happens to be. After all this time I don’t guess this will ever really change as long as we perform what is known as “massage therapy”. However more and more people everywhere and in all walks of life are praising the benefits of massage therapy in spite of the everlasting negative image. We are still able to substantially build and improve upon our industry’s reputation, opening doors to the health care industry, to employers, to insurance companies, and even to the higher courts of law. The only other profession who has had to work so hard to overcome the negative aspects of their profession are those in the nursing field. If we could have built on what we are, what we do and the results we achieve, instead of always fighting the “image” think how much farther ahead we could have been than most other providers in the health care field today. So whether or not we use self proclaimed titles, the bottom line is we must continue to provide quality, affordable, massage therapy for all. The more people who learn about and receive our “professional” services, the more people we have on our side to help us continue the fight for our right to be in one of the top positions in the health care arena with or without insurance for reimbursement.
