With crowds flocking to visit Women in Aviation International at the recent AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 (pictured below), Dave Higdon wonders why more isn’t being done to enable women to address the pending staffing shortages in aviation… Though the vendors pitching trades education to women were apparent around the showgrounds of this year’s AirVenture, the idea of female maintenance technicians still unsettles some within the industry. Nevertheless, Suzanne Markle, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA), flagged up an idea that could help the aviation community fill its critical technician shortage; a suggestion made by a respondent to a survey by the PIA. “[Career] Counsellors need to stop the 'surprised' look when female students want to consider trade schools,” noted a respondent to PIA's survey of its female students. That survey produced some surprising findings, and the following points were among them: • •

More than half of PIA's female students first explored a different career path before gravitating to aeronautics; Two-thirds of those respondents said they didn't know any other women working in the aviation trade before applying to PIA; Nearly every respondent urged high-school guidance counsellors to provide female students with information about trade schools in addition to the more "traditional" options like a four-year school or nursing, better enabling students to make their own minds up about their futures.

Grounding-Level Shortage Aviation needs these women to move beyond being interested to getting trained because, according to a Boeing report delivered at AirVenture, pilots and technicians are already retiring faster than they can be replaced.

Fewer men are pursuing aviation careers than in the past, and the retirement pace is only likely to increase. Worsening shortages loom at all levels of aviation. Statistically, although 30% of the workforce is at (or near) retirement age, new-hires replenish only 2% of the workforce annually. And as we all know, a labour shortage can impact costs the same as any other shortage in business, creating pricing and demand problems for passengers and cargo carriers and, by extension, Business and General Aviation. No Cures Without Concerted Effort Women started moving into cockpit jobs decades ago. Yet women barely show up in statistics for avionics and maintenance technicians, and for no good reason. “The reasons are countless to encourage females of every age and background to seek out and excel in career fields that have been previously affiliated with male roles,” Markle said in a release from PIA. “And if solving a critical labour shortage isn’t incentive enough, experts have suggested that encouraging females in fields such as aviation can have significant economic impact.” According to a recent study from the McKinsey Global Institute, efforts to close the gender gap could boost the US economy by an extra $2.1 trillion in gross domestic product. Encouraging the fulfilment of women interested in taking up a wrench and servicing aircraft can't help but move aviation toward catching up and filling the ranks with qualified people. The airplane doesn't know or ask whether the A&P is a woman or a man – and who should care, as long as aircraft continue to fly?

How did the Piston Shipments Look in H1 2018? Fifteen piston aircraft OEMs report to GAMA currently and the health of the market is reflected in the fact that eight of the 15 are ahead of last year’s shipments, while two are level and five trail their 2017 totals. Aviation analyst Mike Potts explores… The General Aviation Manufacturers Association announced delivery and billings data for the first half (H1) of 2018 in August. Total aircraft deliveries were up in H1 from 1,001 aircraft in 2017 to 1,054 in 2018. During H1 2018 there were 417 single engine piston shipments and 81 twin piston shipments, compared with 400 and 68 (respectively) in H1 2017.

Of the remaining companies, Extra’s 12 units matched its prior year total. Pipestral (seven shipments), Mooney (six), American Champion and Cubcrafter (five each), Waco (four), Textron’s Beechcraft unit and Mahindra (three each) and AVIC (two), accounted for the remaining piston single shipments. Maule made no shipments and hasn’t done for more than two years. Nevertheless, it would seem someone is continuing to support the type certificate with the intention of putting it back in production (as was done with Mooney not long ago).

Piston Single Market Review Cirrus Aircraft: The piston single market leader by a

wide measure is Cirrus, with 172 deliveries during H1 2018, up from 149 at this point last year. The SR22T accounted for 76 of those and was the best-selling piston single in H1 2018. Overall, Cirrus enjoyed a gain of almost 15.44%, strongly out-performing the overall piston single market which is ahead by 6.4% over H1 2017.

Twin Piston Market Review Diamond DA42 - 22 aircraft delivered

Even as the piston single market is slowly gaining ground the twin piston market continues to thrive. Four companies have produced a total of 81 piston twins during H1 2018 an increase of 19.2% over the 68 shipments reported in H1 2017.

Textron Cessna: Second place went to Textron’s

Cessna unit, which has long since given up hope of reclaiming first position. Cessna delivered 80 piston singles during H1 2018, down from 98 in H1 2017. Cessna’s results were impacted by a very soft first quarter (Q1) when it delivered just 21 airplanes. In the second quarter (Q2) deliveries accelerated to 59, ahead of the 57 it reported in Q2 2017, but not enough to pass its H1 2017 total.

Diamond Aircraft: Leading the market is Diamond with 33 deliveries so far this year, down from 36 last year.

Tecnam: Following fairly closely was Tecnam with 25

shipments. Tecnam’s H1 2018 total was greater than the 18 shipped in H1 2017, and the Italian OEM could be a threat to Diamond’s leadership of the twin piston market going forwards.

Piper Aircraft: In third place for piston single

deliveries, Piper reported 49 units. Piper’s total was up from 32 in H1 2017.

Tecnam: In hot pursuit of Piper for third place was

Italian OEM Tecnam, which reported 45 shipments in H1 2018, up from 34 last year.

Diamond Aircraft: Next came Diamond, with 25

shipments to complete the ‘Top Five’ piston-single OEMs in H1 2018. Diamond’s total, no doubt affected by the company’s increasing presence in the piston twin market, was down from 31 shipments in H1 2017.

with 15 was Piper, but like Tecnam, the Florida-based OEM was up significantly from a year ago when it shipped just six aircraft. Nonetheless, it’s hard to imagine Piper trying to make a big run in this market.

Textron Beechcraft: Bringing up the rear was

Textron’s Beechcraft unit with eight shipments, the same as last year. Like Piper, Beechcraft seems a willing, but not particularly enthusiastic participant. More information from www.gama.aero

International AOPA (IAOPA) Europe has called on the EU Commission to act to address the growing number of GArelated EASA Opinions that are awaiting implementation (as detailed in the GA Roadmap, see EASA’s website). IAOPA says that “unfortunately” many Opinions have yet to be “converted into corresponding changes in the basic law.” Some opinions were already delivered over two years ago, it adds. In a letter to the Commission, IAOPA senior vice president Michael Erb (AOPA Germany) stated, "IAOPA Europe, together with its colleagues from Europe Air Sports, GAMA, and other associations, have been working hard since 2012 to revise European regulations in the sector of our industry within the framework of the General Aviation Strategy and the resulting General Aviation Roadmap.” He highlighted Part M Light as a “big problem.” Two years have passed since the publication of the EASA Opinion 5/2016 in April 2016, and the introduction has been repeatedly announced “for the coming months.” Erb added: “However, as of this date nothing has been done.”. www.iaopa.eu

EAA: Oshkosh Breaks Records Again

UK CAA Urges 8.33kHz Adoption The UK CAA has urged aircraft owners to upgrade their radios to 8.33 kHz following “airspace incidents.” The authority says interference and lack of communication from non-equipped aircraft is causing considerable concern.

EAA AirVenture 2018 (“Oshkosh”) was, according to Experimental Aircraft Association chairman Jack Pelton, “as close as one could imagine” to the “perfect” event–given its “combination of outstanding programmes, aircraft variety, a robust economy, and good weather.

“Several recent incidents involving non8.33 compatible radios have caused concern for air traffic controllers,” the CAA said. “Pilots have been tuned to incorrect channels and not been able to communicate with ground stations. En-route controllers meanwhile have also experienced interference from aircraft using the wrong frequencies. Pilots are strongly advised to check appropriate frequencies as part of their pre-flight planning routine.” The CAA clarified that aircraft with 25 kHz radios cannot communicate with ground stations operating on 8.33 kHz. It reiterated that sport and recreational frequencies, including the common gliding channel, ballooning frequency and Safetycom, will also need to convert to 8.33 kHz in early 2019. A list of UK ground stations now operating on 8.33 kHz is updated monthly in the AIP Supplement. See www.caa.co.uk

Attendance hit just over 600,000, nearly two percent above of 2017’s record total, added Pelton. More than 10,000 aircraft arrived at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh and other airports in east-central Wisconsin. At Wittman alone, there were 19,588 aircraft operations in the 11-day period from July 20-30, which is an average of approximately 134 takeoffs and landings per hour. Dire Reasons to use a Short-Term Trust

Owners sometimes think there are reasons – whether financial or personal – why they shouldn’t set up a short-term trust for their newly-purchased aircraft. They all overlook the severity of what might happen. Aircraft Guaranty illustrates with a case study… A foreign buyer needed to register an aircraft in the US for a short period of time, so work could be done on the aircraft before it was exported to its new home country. Since the buyer was not a US citizen, he could not register the aircraft in his name. He reached out to an aunt who was a US citizen and asked her to register in her name instead. She agreed, and according to the FAA records became the registered owner of the aircraft. One day, the DEA visited the local Fixed Base Operator (FBO) to inspect the airplane. The inspection showed that the aunt didn’t really own the aircraft but that the owner was a non-US citizen. With this information, the DEA inspector got nervous and seized the aircraft. So what did the owner have to do to get his aircraft back from the DEA? About the DEA To best explain this situation, let’s first understand the workings of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Their mission, per their website, is as follows: “The mission…is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets.”

To achieve this mission, the DEA is authorized to seize and forfeit an aircraft that is used for these crimes. Title 49 of the US Code, Subtitle VII, Part A governs air commerce and safety. It includes Subpart 46306(d)(1) that allows the DEA or Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to seize and forfeit an aircraft used in violation of registration, marking and certification laws. Since 2007, the DEA has seized $3.2bn from people who were never charged with crimes. What’s more, between 2006 and 2010 over 400 planes were seized. This data tells us that this is not something to be taken lightly, as the “foreign-buyer nephew” aircraft owner found out. Complexity of Releasing a Seized Plane It’s up to the aircraft owner to prove their innocence. In our situation outlined above, the aircraft owner got tangled in a lengthy and complex legal process that, in addition to the seized aircraft, probably also included fines, a suspended operator certificate, legal fees, and possibly even criminal penalties. Ultimately, he was found Not Guilty of any wrongdoing, and the aircraft was returned to him, but not without much suffering and heartache on his part in the meantime. The nephew could have avoided these hardships if he had only known more about short-term trusts. Hamburg, Germany-based WingX reported that the summer started strongly for business aviation with 89,289 departures in Europe in June, a 4.4 percent increase Year-on-Year (YOY). Its Business Aviation Monitor reported that at the yearly midpoint, Year-to-Date (YTD) growth stood at 2.7 percent compared to 3.3 percent over the preceding 12 months. However, “June 2018 was 0.4 percent less busy than June 2008,” it added.

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) reported that in the second quarter of 2018 the total number of aircraft deliveries was up, while overall billings were down. In the first half of 2018, turbine rotorcraft shipments increased from 338 to 345, a 2.1 percent increase. Britten-Norman Upgrades Islander Avionics UK manufacturer Britten-Norman says that it has won a contract to upgrade the avionics of Islander aircraft used for special operations in Romania. The aircraft are owned and operated by INCAS (Romania’s National Institute for Aerospace Research). The upgrade includes installation of Garmin touchscreen flight displays and engine information systems (EIS), all part of the Garmin G600TXi family that incorporates enhanced situational awareness tools, and will include dual Garmin GTN Navcom/GPS and an L3 electronic display with integral battery (along with a second pitot/static system) to provide back-up flight instruments. INCAS has been operating four BN2 Islanders with standard ‘six pack’ avionics since the 1980s, said BrittenNorman. Technical director David Shaw said: “Using our EASA-approved facilities and our experimental flying test-bed, we carry out all manner of equipment trials on behalf of customers. Working with Garmin we are now able to bring affordable innovation to the general aviation market as well.” The project will see Britten-Norman’s design team create a bespoke modification for INCAS followed by field engineers from Britten-Norman working alongside INCAS technicians to manage the upgrade of the aircraft at the customer’s site in Romania. The Garmin G600 TXi is now the standard fit for all new-build Islanders. Garmin has designed the G600 TXi flight displays for Class III aircraft up to 12,500 lbs. Growth came mainly from flights within Europe, up by five percent YOY. There were exceptions, with domestic France activity flat, and flights between Germany and France falling more than 10 percent. Flights to Middle East fell 9 percent. WingX said charter and fractional activity had been the main driver of demand, with AOC jet sectors up by seven percent. Ultra-long range and Light Jet AOC activity was up by more than 10 percent. Bombardier and Embraer aircraft saw most growth in AOC activity, respectively increasing 11 and 21 percent YOY. Embraer aircraft also flew more private flights, up 16 percent YOY, compared to an overall trend in private flights of just two percent YOY. Gulfstream 650 jet sectors were up almost 50 percent, and PC-12 activity grew by more than 20 percent YOY. Phenom 300 and Embraer Legacy had “easily the strongest growth” in AOC activity, along with the CJ3. Citation Mustang activity declined, particularly in charter activity. Le Bourget added the most growth in the month, with departures up by 14 percent. Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Malaga and Barcelona all saw growth of around 20 percent YOY. Luton ranked below Farnborough, seeing a six percent YOY decline in activity. Richard Koe, managing director of WINGX Advance, commented that activity levels are “finally back where they were a decade ago.” He noted that demand in Germany had provided much of the momentum, along with growth in flights to top Mediterranean resorts in Croatia, the Balearics and Cote d´Azur, “where the increase in longrange heavy jet activity is conspicuous.” Finally, he onserved that “overall, light jets are adding most of the growth in European activity.” www.wingx-advance.com

Daher reported at AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 that sales of its single-engine turboprop is “going strong” and that it had reached the 900 delivery milestone. The 900th aircraft was a TBM 930 delivered to Thomas Solano, an IT entrepreneur in Jacksonville, Florida, in July. Daher currently is producing TBM 900 series aircraft – the sixth evolution from the original TBM 700 configuration – offered in two production versions, the TBM 930, incorporating Garmin’s G3000 integrated flight deck and touch screen controls; and the TBM 910, with Garmin next-generation G1000 NXi avionics technology. “We are committed to maintaining the TBM as best-in-class for the long-term, and will continue a sustained production rate for the aircraft,” said Nicolas Chabbert, senior v-p of the Daher Airplane Business Unit. The first TBM flew in July 1988, with its 30-year milestone of the original TBM 700 version’s initial takeoff also being recognized at Oshkosh 2018. Solano is a successful entrepreneur in the software sector. A passionate pilot with both aircraft and helicopter ratings, he uses the TBM for business and private trips. “You just don’t buy a TBM, you became a part of the family,” Solano said. “Since my introduction to the TBM and Daher in 2012, I’ve had a very positive experience.” www.tbm.aero

The Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) used the recent Farnborough Airshow to celebrate the renewal of its fleet following a 2016 contract between the UK MoD and QinetiQ, which will manage the school through to 2028. Three new types were selected, with deliveries now nearing completion. First to arrive were two Grob G120TPs, the type beginning operations from Boscombe Down in November 2017. It is also receiving four Airbus Helicopters H125s, one if which was displayed at Farnborough. The helicopters have been modified with telemetry reporting equipment, dedicated communications, and three-axis autopilot, with the first being handed over in March. The third type is the Pilatus PC-21. The first of two fully instrumented examples was handed over to ETPS on July 17 at the air show after flying in Switzerland since January on instructor training. The second is due in the fourth quarter. The school’s fleet of ex-German Alpha Jets, which was acquired in 1999, has been retired. www.etps.co.uk

Pilatus has delivered the first of two PC-21s to Wiltshire, UK-based Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS). Operated by QinetiQ, ETPS functions as a training centre for flight test engineers and test pilots. On 17 July, Markus Bucher, CEO of Pilatus, presented a traditional Swiss souvenir to Steve Wadey, CEO of QinetiQ Group to commemorate the delivery and handover of ETPS’ first PC-21 trainer aircraft. The second will be delivered in Q4 2018 and will be used for test pilot training courses commencing in early 2019. The PC-21 was developed to meet the growing requirements of air force training, and its outstanding performance, optimum aerodynamics, state-of-the-art cockpit equipment, flexibility and ease of maintenance will ensure it becomes a stand-out training aircraft for ETPS.

According to the German company, early flight testing has showed that the seven-bladed prop reduces noise and improves performance. It has also entered discussions with P&WC about customising the gearbox to reduce fuel consumption “to get the best out of the unducted prop fan.” Early flight testing took place in 2016 on a Piper Cheyenne powered by PT6A135A turbines, and according to MT-Propeller “the entire system performed with outstanding results.” The endurance tests for certification were successfully performed on a turbine test bench for three months and a total of 110 hours. Total bench and flight test tests now total more than 250 hours. “The first OEM has already ordered the seven-bladed propellers for a new project,” said the company, without giving further details. www.mt-propeller.com

EBAA Welcomes PBN Rule The European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) says all-weather access to secondary and tertiary airports has moved a step closer after the introduction of a new performance-based navigation (PBN) implementing rule. EBAA says the new Basic Regulation has “opened the door to large deployment of EGNOS-based procedures.” EGNOS is the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System that allows accuracy corrections to GNSS signals (such as GPS) so that ILS-like LPV (Localiser Performance with Vertical Guidance) can be accessible to suitably equipped aircraft. “The increasing EGNOS penetration will bring real benefits to regional, business, rotorcraft and general aviation, and hence to the European connectivity and economy,” concluded EBAA. www.ebaa.aero

Blackhawk XP Engine+ FAST Solution STC Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) has obtained a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) allowing the installation and operation of its flight data acquisition, storage and transmission system (FAST) on Blackhawk-equipped King Air 200/300 series aircraft and Caravan 208/208B aircraft. In addition to the FAA signoff, the FAST solution has also gained EASA and TCCA approval for Blackhawk integration. The FAST system is a digital diagnostics and prognostics tool which captures, analyses, and wirelessly transmits full-flight data intelligence to operators or maintenance technicians within 15 minutes of engine shut down. The FAST technology will provide owners and operators with greater situational awareness regarding their engine performance which will help maximise aircraft availability, optimise maintenance planning, reduce operating costs, and avoid delays and cancellations. Blackhawk will provide the FAST Solution through their Authorized Dealer Network, which currently spans about 85 facilities worldwide. www.blackhawk.aero

Inmarsat and ESA in ATC Milestone The European Space Agency (ESA) and Inmarsat have successfully completed the first test flight using aviation satellite technology for the Iris programme, part of European air traffic modernization efforts. The evaluation is aimed at creating more precise flight surveillance and more efficient air traffic management. Iris is a public-private partnership sponsored by ESA and led by Inmarsat, to enable secure, high-bandwidth datalink communications over Europe. The three-hour test flight departed Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and was supported by Iris technology partners Honeywell, CGI and Sitaonair and used Inmarsat’s SB-S L-band service. The aircraft used was a Cessna Citation II provided by Dutch company NLR. Several real-time communication exchanges were completed between the cockpit and flight control facility over continental and oceanic airspace. The evaluation moves the Iris programme a step closer to enabling SESAR’s concept of pinpointing aircraft in four dimensions (4D) – latitude, longitude, altitude and time The Iris programme will enhance airspace utilisation and aviation safety, while reducing flight times, delays and CO2 emissions, all in support of the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) masterplan. It will be powered by Inmarsat’s new SwiftBroadband-Safety (SB-S) platform, the enhanced IP-based capabilities will relieve pressure on crowded VHF channels.

You Should Ask More About Damage History… The concern over aircraft damage history is two-fold: There’s the impact that damage history has on an aircraft operationally, and the impact on resale value. Jet Tolbert discusses how aircraft buyers can protect themselves from these… Past Damage Impact on Future Operations If the aircraft you’re considering buying has past repair history, does that history have any potential to increase the requirements for maintenance, downtime and costs going forwards? Let’s imagine an aircraft previously suffered the effects of hail damage. If the aircraft had parts removed and replaced by a factory-owned/ authorized service center, the chances are that it would have no impact on the future maintenance costs and will not require any additional maintenance inspections specific to those repairs. On the other hand, maybe there were some more significant repairs required, or repairs undertaken outside of the factory-owned/ authorized center which required specialist engineering, and/or installation of additional parts like ‘doublers’ that provide increased structural integrity to the airframe.

Though often these repairs are done correctly, and the integrity of the aircraft is as good (if not better) than the original design, this should still be confirmed prior to purchase. Sometimes previous repairs require ongoing, recurrent inspection to verify their integrity and that of the surrounding area – and this will impact the buyer in their future operations. A thorough review of an aircraft’s historical records should be undertaken to establish any potential exposure to you during your ownership period of the aircraft.

Past Damage Impact on Future Value The second, but equally pragmatic concern for buyers is that past repairs could impact the value of the aircraft when the buyer comes to resell the aircraft in the future. After all, the aircraft’s history will have to be disclosed to the next owner as part of the sale. Aside from any misgivings about buying an airplane with damage history, a purchaser should consider how the market has been reacting to

the varying degrees of repairs that an aircraft may have. As an example, if a review of market transactions shows that only aircraft in pristine condition with no prior incidents or repairs have been selling, then you may want to reconsider buying an airplane with damage history – or at least do so with the understanding that you will have to motivate buyers somehow when it comes time to resell the airplane later. On the other hand, if the market has been fluid with similar aircraft trading regularly at a clear price-point then the key issue for the buyer is going to be paying a fair price. An experienced acquisition broker will advise you on all these points, informing you of all the circumstances surrounding an aircraft’s history and how they will affect your usage and future resale. From ‘Not All Bad’ to ‘Deal-Killer’ Essentially, all aircraft have repair history of some kind. It’s not all bad but sometimes it can be a deal-killer. Considering that an aircraft purchase is a lengthy process with many twists and turns it is surely wise to be well informed. Aircraft damage history can be a steep learning curve. Unfortunately, sometimes, the lessons aren’t fully realized until after the aircraft has been purchased, or much time and money has been invested in a transaction that unravels. A well-selected, experienced acquisition team can ensure the right questions are asked to keep you up to speed and able to make the best buying decision, based on the resale market conditions. It is essential to have the information you need up front. Being aware of an aircraft’s history early in the process will prevent some serious headaches later.

Rolls-Royce is to work with YASA and Electroflight to develop all-electric propulsion in a project known as Accelerating the Electrification of Flight (ACCEL). It aims to flight test the system to gain a detailed understanding of the potential for electric flight. We are already investigating the potential of hybrid-electric propulsion, building on our existing expertise in applications such as hybrid trains and gas turbine-powered naval vessels, but this funding from the UK Government will enable us to explore the potential of all-electric flight. Chris Harris, CEO of YASA, said: “We’re excited to be working with Rolls-Royce on integrating our high-power, light weight electric motors into a pure electric demonstrator aircraft. Thanks to our innovative axial-flux design, YASA can deliver the smallest, lightest electric motors for a given power and torque – opening up new and exciting opportunities for electrification in aerospace.” Rolls-Royce is already exploring hybrid electric propulsion – using a gas turbine engine as a generator to power an electric fan for regional commercial aircraft through the E-Fan X demonstrator programme with Airbus and Siemens, announced last year. What a Difference the Years Make

EAA and its conventions provide a venue to share tips, designs and revel in the camaraderie of the aviation community. And so it was at AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. Among the exhibitors were Cessna and Beech (both part of Textron); Piper and Pilatus; One Aviation; Epic Aircraft (with its new single-engine turboprop); Embraer; and both Airbus and Boeing. New-entrant Stratus displayed the prototype of its 716 jet, an enlarged version of the original 714.

Cirrus Aircraft returned with its strong-selling Vision, the world's first certificated single-engine business jet, along with its newest SR-series piston singles. And Daher displayed its two powerful turboprop singles, the TBM910 and 930. Near the flight line stood the two adjoining booth spaces staffed by the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA). President and CEO Ed Bolen has long viewed AirVenture as an important venue because of the large number of his operating and associate members who attend. The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) also attended, as usual, because its leader Pete Bunce shares Bolen’s view. Ultimately, all of aviation is interrelated, linked by their activity and the government agency overseeing them all, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). And as happens at other smaller events, FAA staff attend to capitalize on the presence of the aviation executives who attend; to meet with various levels of the agency; and accomplish in person what may be more difficult to achieve in the Washington, D.C. environment. Many top executives, designers and pilots start their flying in small aircraft and though their branches may spread into jets and airliners – even space travel – their roots are planted in General Aviation. After all, aviation is aviation is aviation.
