NEW AIRCRAFT

EV-55 OUTBACK SUCCESSFUL “FLUTTER” TESTS

The test flights were performed in two flight levels FL100 and FL200. Excitation impulses were induced during stable flight by means of auxiliary rockets (located on wing and tail units) and by pilot interventions. The objective of these impulses was to introduce vibrations into the aircraft structure which can occur for instance in flight in turbulent atmosphere. The result of carried out testing was a finding that the aircraft structure shows good damping of such generated vibrations without any other negative phenomena and the aircraft is safe and resistant to fluttering.

The development programme of the EV-55 Outback achieved another important milestone when successfully completed flight test series proving aircraft resistance to aeroelastic phenomena – the so-called flutter.

Verification of maximum horizontal speed value of the EV-55 Outback was part of the test flight program. During the tests the speed of 223 KTAS was repeatedly reached at horizontal flight at flight level FL100, which is by 3 kts higher than the theoretically determined value. Thanks to high horizontal speed the aircraft will be able to reach expected productivity which belongs, along with low operation costs and easy maintenance, among the key competitive advantages of the EV-55.

The whole series consisted of 20 flights, which were performed in two weight configurations (with minimum and maximum quantity of fuel), and was completed with success in mid-June.

Cessna has introduced three new single-engine products to the general aviation market in the past twelve months. Orders are being taken on the Grand Caravan EX, the Turbo Skylane JT-A and the Cessna TTx, aircraft that extend traditional boundaries of general aviation in terms of payload, performance and style. “Cessna’s three new aircraft all offer distinct strengths and capabilities,” said Jodi Noah, Cessna senior vice president of single engine/propeller aircraft.

The Cessna Grand Caravan EX was unveiled at EAA Oshkosh in 2012, with deliveries commencing in December of 2012. The “high and hot” configuration has kindled interest in many regions of the world. “The EX has generated worldwide interest in the Caravan line,” said Lannie O’Bannion, Cessna business leader for the Caravan. “We are seeing interest in many different areas, from customers who see the advantages of the powerful, versatile Grand Caravan EX.”

Customers continue to rave about the performance and efficiency of the JT-A, while the versatile Grand Caravan EX remains the hands-down favorite as the powerful utility aircraft of choice in the global marketplace,” Noah added.

“The Turbo Skylane JT-A continues to be well received by customers, both domestically and internationally,” said Jeff Umscheid, business leader for the JT-A. “The transatlantic flight is a credit to the whole JT-A team and an indicator of the startling capabilities of this aircraft. The fuel technology we have incorporated into this product offers unparalleled fuel efficiency. As a result, the aircraft burns approximately 30 percent to 40 percent less fuel than its avgas engine counterparts.” Umscheid said. Certification for the JT-A is expected in the third quarter of this year, with deliveries to follow.

The coating used in the Night Sky edition of the Turbo Stationair is provided by Netherlandsbased AkzoNobel N.V., one of the world’s largest paint and coatings company. The solar heat reflective coating (SHR) uses an integrated technology which allows for darker paint to be used on non-traditional surfaces of the aircraft, such as the wings. Only a limited number of Turbo Stationair units will be manufactured with the Night Sky package.  More information visit – www.cessna.com
