The Brazilian government is investing millions to establish the assembly line and expand the country’s aerospace sector, according to Novaer’s website. The new aircraft, designed by Joszéf Kovács, will come in two-seat and four-seat versions. The Novaer U-Xc will have four seats; a 315 horsepower, six-cylinder Lycoming aerobatic engine; a 192-knot cruise speed; 16,000-foot service ceiling (higher with an optional turbocharged engine); and 1,632 pounds of useful load.

Unlike the USCAP which receives Federal funding and has a fleet of 550 â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;corporateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; aircraft, mostly Cessna 172â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and 182â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, the aircraft in the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s CAP are all in private ownership. Most of the CAP aircraft in the UK are in the light aircraft class, those aircraft powered by the ubiquitous Rotax and Jabiru engines. There are also some flex-wing microlights and autogyros and a small number of light helicopters. The CAP technical officer, Dave Unwin, the former editor of Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pilot, will soon be evaluating the Groppo Trail, a kit aircraft from Italy, and the Foxbat A-22 Sport 600 as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;affordableâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; aircraft that may be suitable for air search operations and purchased through corporate sponsorship. However, there is also a Civil Air Patrol in the UK which can trace its beginnings back to the year 2000 when it was titled the Sky Watch Community Air Service. It was not until 2009 that the current Chairman, Tony Cowan, a former RAF Nimrod pilot who also flew with the police service and the Scottish Air Ambulance Service, was sponsored by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to spend a month with the USCAP so that all the good ideas could be brought back to the UK without having to re-invent the wheel â&#x20AC;&#x201C; better to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;stealâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; someone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wheel and paint it in your own colours! Not that the USCAP mind as in 2010, the 10th Anniversary of the Sky Watch Civil Air Patrol, the Americanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s invited their British â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cousinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to wear the same tie, dark blue with red diagonal stripes, when attending formal functions. Today the Sky Watch Civil Air Patrol, a charity registered in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, has around 200 members with a similar number of aircraft. Seventy of these aircraft belong to members who are also members of operational units with unit chief pilot in charge. In some respects the UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s CAP is a bit like the RNLI lifeboat service where the majority of members are supporters and a smaller number actually man the lifeboats.

One of the most recent success stories for the CAP in the UK occurred in Northern Ireland when, on the same day, the Northern Ireland CAP signed agreements with both the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service to provide an air search service during humanitarian operations. This relatively new unit which has a fleet of four aircraft, a Foxbat A-22 and three Ikarus C-42â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, is also the only unit to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone, for search operations with an approval from the Civil Aviation authority. At this time the drone, which carries high definition cameras is flown by a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on the ground but it is anticipated that it will soon fly itself using a pre-programmed GPS based search pattern and an onboard computer. ď&#x201A;˘ More information about the Civil Air Patrol in

The centre fuselage and wings of the Ki-54 came up in one piece. The nose section broke off, but was also successfully raised, relatively intact. Sixty-nine years after it ditched during a training flight, a Tachikawa Ki-54a “Hickory” was salvaged from Lake Towada, 330 miles north of Tokyo. The twinengine machine, one of only two complete survivors, was raised from a depth of 1,000ft by volunteers from the Aviation Association of Aomori Prefecture, and has now been moved to the Misawa Aviation and Science Museum pending restoration.

Following its successful engine runs, de Havilland Mosquito FB.26 KA114 made its first flight before the end of September from Ardmore Aerodrome, New Zealand. The aircraft rescued from a Canadian farm, owned by enthusiast Jerry Yagen had been at Avspecs hangar in restoration since 2004 when it arrived in pieces on a low-loader.

Stearman Model 4E Speedmail has made its first flight following a 5-year restoration, on August 29 from Zellwood, Florida, USA. The 1929-built machine, owned by display pilot Sarah Wilson is the oldest surviving model of its type. The aircraft was originally delivered to the Richfield Oil Company in 1929 where it was the company’s flagship for sponsorship of a popular radio programme of the time.

The Catalina PBY-5A amphibian owned by Stichting Neptune in the Netherlands, flew for the first time from Lelystad on August 13 wearing 1942 Dutch Navy markings. The flight followed over 3 years of maintenance and restoration . The aircraft is the oldest airworthy PBY, having been originally delivered to the US Navy in November 1941. It was then subsequently based in Iceland as a U-Boat hunter, where it sank U-464 on its maiden patrol and seriously damaged U-528. Stichting acquired the aircraft in 1999.

The Imperial War Museum (IWM) Amiot AAC.1 (a French-built Junkers Ju 52), seen out in the sun at Duxford in early September, would appear to be destined for the Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków. The IWM Trustees recently decided to dispose of several aircraft (see Classic News, August 2012 GA BUYER EUROPE), it is being reported that the IWM’s de Havilland Sea Venom FAW.21, XG613, will also be heading to Kraków.

After an investment of $250,000 and five years of research, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has found a way to address local residents’ concerns about noise from its training aircraft. The university has installed new noise reduction exhaust systems and is continuing to conduct research on new quieter propellers in its Daytona Beach campus fleet of Cessna 172 training aircraft. “We’ve listened to our community and spent many hours trying to come up with solutions – serving on local noise committees, developing alternate procedures, producing noise abatement handouts and training videos – whatever it took to try to resolve this,” said Ken Byrnes, chairman of flight operations at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus. “But it always came back to a mechanical solution.” After testing and analyzing a variety of airplane exhaust systems and experimental propellers for the past two years, Byrnes said his department got the best results with an exhaust system from Gomolzig Company in Germany and a resized propeller. The study and installation effort has involved more than a dozen faculty, staff and students at the campus. “We are the first large flight training organization in the nation to install a noise-reducing system in our fleet of Cessna 172 training aircraft,” Byrnes said. The campus uses 41 of the planes to train students. In the beginning, I created a rough prototype fixed on the roof of my car equipped with strands of red wool to observe the flows at high speed on the highway, visible and controllable of my opening sunroof. I found that the strands of wool headed in the right direction, it was in 1997. After several campaigns of wind tunnel on 28 different prototypes finally I got a very interesting result and I continued my research by 5 digital blower campaigns on airplane where I got a net gain of 6% net on the entire airplane. As there was an emerging interest in the wind turbine I have also done 8 digital blower campaigns on the wind turbine U.S. NREL where I got a gain of 14% additional efficiency power average by year with less vibration on the entire structure and no changes to the axial thrust. Since that date 14 patents were filed, with 2 in the USA. In April and June 2012, actual tests were made on RV4 and RV8 with Inside left view of Minix results far beyond the laboratory wind tunnel tests and numerical wind tunnel. Two Further tests are planned on RV7 and RV8 in Europe in 2012.

A one percent reduction of the drag saves millions of dollars to air transport companies and more than 3% of global pollution is made by the aviation industry. The problem is two fold: - The induced drag creates a loss of fuel caused by two wingtip vortex. - These two contra-rotating vortices very violent can lead to serious accidents, especially around airports, if you do not respect the spacing between each category of aircraft. New Helicopter Maintenance Base in Kyrgyzstan

The new centre has been set up by Novosibirsky Aviaremontnyi Zavod, part of the Russian Helicopters congolmerate. Local operations of Mil helicopters are centred on Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry for Emergency Situations, the Defence Ministry and its state-run airline.

A helicopter service centre has been opened in Bishkek, the Kyrgyzstan capital. The base will both maintain and upgrade Mil helicopters and provide warranty services.
