Taking centre stage as the show’s largest exhibitor, Bell Helicopter, greeted record crowds of almost 20,000 event attendees who filled the Bell Helicopter booth to speak with company representatives while examining and interacting with the four Bell helicopters on display – two Bell 429s, as well as the new Bell 412EPI and Bell 407GT, both introduced during the event.

independent sales representative in northwest Russia. Bell Helicopter and Helidrive also announced recent purchase agreements for five aircraft - two Bell 429s and three Bell 407GXs. “Russia is one of the fastest growing markets in the world and a key priority for Bell Helicopter. Because of Russia’s significance, we believe it is important to have locally-based representatives who can work directly with our customers in the market in which they fly,” said Danny Maldonado, Bell Helicopter’s executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. “We selected Helidrive based on their professional approach and new state-of-the-art facility. Helidrive provides a world-class experience and its strategic location in Saint Petersburg, near Pulkovo International Airport, enables easy access for our customers.” “Bell Helicopter’s products are ideally suited for Russia’s harsh operating conditions,” said Ivan Yatsenko, general director and major shareholder at Helidrive. “As a leader in northwest Russia, our unique capabilities will enable Bell Helicopter to compete more aggressively in our growing market. We look forward to working with them.” Retractable gear Bell 429 – First pictures
According to John Garrison, president and CEO of Bell Helicopter, HELI-EXPO is always an important event for the company, but this year’s show was particularly significant. “We set out very aggressive customer interaction and sales goals for HELI-EXPO, since it is our first major trade show of the year,” he said. “It’s been an exciting and intense few days spending time with hundreds of our best customers.” “I think the best evidence of our success at the show is the agreements we reached for sales of 50 helicopters to current customers and first-time Bell Helicopter customers,” Garrison added. Among the purchase agreements signed during HELI-EXPO: A significant order for 30 helicopters by American Medical Group Holdings; this is on the heels of another major EMS win in December with Air Methods for 20 helicopters. Plus orders for an additional 20 helicopters came from international customers, further growing Bell Helicopter’s presence in Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Bell 429 with retractable landing gear
Above are photos of the new retractable gear Bell 429 as announced at Heli-Expo in Las Vegas in early March. We understand that it is the wheeled variant which has led to Bell pushing the certified maximum weight up from 7,000lb to 7,500lb, and while many national authorities have already agreed the higher figure, the FAA - and indeed EASA and others have not yet approved the increase. All the extra mechanicals required for the retractable wheels would make the useful load a lot less practical at the 7,000lb AUW limit. Rotorsim, the joint venture owned equally by CAE and AgustaWestland, announced on March 21, that ENAC (the Italian Civil Aviation Authority) has certified a CAE 3000 Series AW139 full-flight simulator (FFS), jointly developed by AgustaWestland and CAE, to Level D, the highest qualification for flight simulators. The new AW139 FFS, the third for Rotorsim, is the second located at the AgustaWestland Training Academy in Sesto Calende, Italy. This simulator is installed in the new simulation building which will include up to nine FFSs and five FTDs (Flight Training Devices) further expanding the Training Academy capabilities.
The CAE 3000 Series helicopter mission simulator features unprecedented realism for helicopter-specific mission training, including offshore oil and gas producer (OGP), law enforcement, corporate VIP and other operations. The simulator enables pilots to practice challenging procedures without risk such as low-level flight, confined area operations, autorotation and landing on platforms at sea. The AW139 FFS for Rotorsim features AgustaWestland-developed flight dynamic model, avionics and aircraft software modeling, combined with CAE core simulation technologies, including: CAE True six degree-of-freedom (DOF) electric motion system and high-performance vibration platform to replicate vibration cues critical to helicopter pilots; a high-fidelity CAE Medallion-6000 visual system; and a direct projection 210 degree by 80 degree extreme field-of-view dome display system. This new AW139 FFS also features important mission kits such as SAR autopilot modes, FIPS (Full Icing Protection System), hoist and cargo hook operations with external cameras, EURONAV V digital map, AIS transponder, cockpit central display and floatation system.
