French start-up manufacturer Elixir Aircraft has completed the detailed design phase for its Elixir piston-single, and says it will begin assembly of the prototype in December with a view to flying the all-carbonfibre aircraft in 2017. “All the moulds required to produce the composite parts – including fuselage, wing, aileron, flaps, rudder – are done, and we have started building them,” says Elixir co-founder and chief operations officer Cyril Champenois. Construction of the Elixir has been simplified by reducing the number of structural components to just eight large pieces. This both speeds the assembly process and makes the aircraft stronger by using fewer bonded parts, says Champenois.

FAA Forecasts Decline of 17,500 Piston Airplanes The Federal Aviation Administration said in a new report that the general aviation fleet is expected to grow, but at an anemic yearly pace, over the next two decades. Growth of the fleet, the report said, will largely be hobbled by piston airplanes. The FAA’s 20-year forecast expects the general aviation fleet to increase from 209,905 airplanes and helicopters in 2016 to 213,420 in 2037, a weak 0.1% annual increase. During that period, turbine aircraft – business jets and turboprops – are expected to grow at an annual rate of nearly 2% a year. Offsetting turbine growth (and helicopters’ annual growth rate of 1.6%) are piston airplanes. The piston airplane fleet is expected to shrink 0.8% annually, the FAA forecast said, or by 17,500 aircraft over the next two decades. The FAA uses input for its forecast from sources including its 2014 General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey, as well as discussions with industry experts, including Transportation Research Board meetings of Business Aviation and Civil Helicopter Subcommittees that convene annually in May and January, the FAA said. AeroExpo UK Hosts Successful 12th Event Those inspired by what they had seen were able to talk to Frank Van Houten, Dutch Rush Aerobatics, who was parked on static display outside Hall A where he chatted to sponsors and members of the general public about aerobatics and his SU-26 aircraft.

Aviation visitors walked, drove and flew into an action packed three day Aero Expo/Heli Expo 2017 held at Wycombe Air Park from June 1 to June 3. Visitors were able to view static aircraft of both the fixed-wing and rotary variety together with more than 150 stalls and exhibitor stands selling everything from the smallest service part to full size aircraft.

Fixed-wing manufacturers were also well represented with Aero Expo taking place at the same time with two halls dedicated to exhibitors and OEM manufacturers.

It was also an opportunity for pilots with their own aircraft to fly into the event from other parts of the country or Europe for either a day or the entire event. However, due to the good weather many pilots chose to fly in with the aero park being full for all three days.

Visitors were treated to some world class helicopter flying as the airfield hosted the UK leg of Helicopter World Cup as organised by the Helicopter Club of GB which drew in helicopter crews from both the UK and Europe. This gave spectators an opportunity to see first-hand how helicopters such as the Robinson R22, R44 and the MD Hughes 500 could be made to handle by some of the best crews in the UK and Europe and then speak to either the crews or experts from HQ Aviation about the helicopters.

Many of the stalls were busy with people looking for items ranging from propeller bolts while others completed significant trade deals during the show. On display on the static park were aircraft from Alpi Aviation, Cirrus Aircraft UK Ltd., Daher, Pilatus Aircraft and Textron Aviation to name just a few of the exciting aircraft manufacturers that were on static display for the general public to view over the three day event.

The event was also the public debut of the Piper M600 which drew a healthy crowd of admirers from those attending the show. Those who attended on Saturday were treated to a high class display of aerobatic flying by Richard Goodwin in a very patriotic liveried Pitts Special which wowed the crowds with high energy manoeuvres while trailing white smoke. At the opposite end of the flying spectrum Guy Westgate using his highly manoeuvrable glider put on both a near silent and balletic display for the crowd. 14 PISTON BUYER EUROPE JULY 2017 WWW.AVBUYER.COM

90th Anniversary of Lindbergh’s Historic Flight Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field near New York early on Friday 20 May 1927 and flew his Ryan NYP monoplane – Spirit of St Louis – for 3,137nm (3,610 statute miles) alone through the night, navigating by compass, the stars and dead reckoning. Carrying 1,704 litres of fuel, he flew east, sometimes as high as 10,000ft to clear storm clouds, often as low as ten feet, skimming the wave tops, and for several hours he flew blind through fog. His flight set an FAI world record for ‘distance in a straight line without landing’. As evidence that he had completed the trans-Atlantic crossing in one single journey, Lindbergh carried a sealed barograph in the aircraft to record air pressure. Through checking the trace of the air pressure recorded during the flight, observers could see that Lindbergh had not landed, and had indeed completed his flight non-stop. When Lindbergh landed at Le Bourget Airport north-east of Paris at 22.22 on Saturday May 21,1927 he was greeted by a crowd of 150,000 people and became an international celebrity overnight. The 25-year-old former barnstormer pilot was fêted around the world, receiving the French Légion d’Honneur and the USA’s Distinguished Flying Cross.

The average length of business aircraft ownership is between three and five years. That doesn’t mean that many owners have made wrong purchases or suffered buyers regret. They are merely responding to evolving needs. Jet Tolbert, President, American Aircraft Sales explores…

usiness and personal needs change, and often the company aircraft will have to change to meet those new requirements. Whether due to business expansion, a family situation, or a home or key executive based in a new location, flight departments often find themselves expanding into new destinations that change the demands on the aircraft. Different stage lengths and available airports can ultimately drive the need to purchase the next jet, either as additional lift or as a replacement to the aircraft that is currently being operated. Some of the driving factors may be evident to the principal owner and C-Level executives, but there are many other less obvious factors that can shape the need to purchase a replacement or supplemental aircraft. Some of these are covered below… Staying Ahead of Regulation Savvy owners value having an aircraft that meets the needs of the company not only for today but also for the rest of the planned length of ownership. Often owners of older aircraft bear the burden of a costly, timeconsuming process to comply with regulatory mandates (such as ADS-B or FANS-1/A). The silver lining to this gray cloud of regulatory flux is that it’s a great time to trade-in or purchase an additional aircraft for the fleet, keeping the passengers in the air with a seamless transition from one aircraft to the next. When buying a replacement aircraft, there will probably be a short period when the company has an excess of aircraft on the books. This situation enables those utilizing the company jet to simply walk out of one aircraft and onto the next, and bridge financing options exist to facilitate the ownership of an additional aircraft, providing a cushion until the previous jet can be sold. Experienced sales firms are also on hand to market the older aircraft first, helping to align the sale of the old jet as closely as possible with the purchase of the replacement aircraft. With the looming January 1, 2020 ADS-B Out regulation and the limited number of facilities available to offer compliance to a

vast fleet of aircraft, whether you plan on owning your aircraft beyond the deadline or not, it makes good sense to upgrade your aircraft now. Being prepared for upcoming regulations means different things to different owners, but compliance is mandatory, and a compliant jet is a far more attractive jet when it comes time to sell. Aging Fleet At a certain point the market tends to lose interest in great aircraft. It appears that when the annual cost of owning an aircraft gets close to its resale value, the pool of interested buyers diminishes. The biggest question to a flight department is whether it will wait to be the one left holding the bag when potential buyers disappear? On too many occasions I have seen owners realize that the value of their aircraft has dropped so low they can’t justify selling it. You can be sure that the value of an older aircraft certainly will continue to ebb away. When the pool of buyers has dried up or when new regulations threaten to restrict your flight operations, you will have to make a difficult decision. You may even become a ‘new buyer’ all over again, with no equity in the flight department. It may be best to plan your aircraft succession strategy that includes selling or trading when the value is still liquid. In Summary The vision of a technologically-advanced, well purposed office-in-the-sky is what drives most buyers to take the plunge into aircraft ownership. Couple this vision with the market experience of a detail-oriented aircraft sales firm and the result will be an ownership experience that leaves nothing to be desired. In logging 52 hours and 33 flights, the Stratos 714 was flown at weights up to 8,300 pounds, over a range of centre of gravity positions. The aircraft is scheduled for upholstery and painting prior to its public debut at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, July 24-30 where it will be on display at the Boeing Plaza. Stratos will also host an indoor exhibit in Booth 314. The company is not taking deposits until the aircraft is closer to certification. A Question Worthy of Careful Consideration excellent. Beware of the bottom prices: take the time to learn the history - do your research thoroughly. Prices that differ wildly from market averages (particularly to the south of the market average) are very likely to come with history, possible legal issues, p oor care or damage history. I once met an operator who had purchased a used jet for a bargain price, only to find that it previously belonged to a North African dictator. The records were sketchy, and upon its first landing in the US, it was impounded due to unpaid bills. An experienced broker would have been able to raise the much needed information to prevent such a purchase from being made. Purchasers of used aircraft must be willing to set money aside for upgrades. In one respect, the airplanes don’t depreciate in value as quickly as new airplanes do (there’s a much steeper depreciation curve at the beginning of an aircraft’s life), and the purchase price is lower, which may enable a larger budget towards upgrading the jet at an appropriate time. As always, you should build a solid team of experts tha t can help you identify a used airplane of excellent pedigree, know all of the right upgrades to keep it viable into the future, and handle the buying and upgrading process without ending up with a costly, heavy inspection (for example) that was not calculated into the acquisition price. Finally, make sure that any residual warranties and engine and/or maintenance contracts are transferable, and check whe ther there are any ‘buy-in’ fees regarding these attributes. Be sure there is an ample supply of parts available in the market to keep your aircraft flying and productive well into the future.

As a child of immigrants, it was ingrained in me growing up to be financially resourceful. When I told my parents that I’d purchased a brand-new minivan to accommodate my growing family, they were quick to remind me of the loss in value that would be incurred just by driving the car out of the dealership. The low interest rates, discounted pricing, bundled accessories and all inclusive maintenance couldn ’t sway them from their stance. Airplanes in those respects are just like cars. They come with similar purchase incentives, and suffer depreciation in similar fashion. For many flight departments, that makes a discussion about whether to buy a new or used aircraft a very pertinent topic.

Purchasing a New Jet

There is nothing like a shiny paint job, stain free carpet, headliners free of scuffs, and that brand new smell in a new aircraft. The maintenance logbooks are thin, and you can set up everything exactly as you want them to be. With that being said, you will also have in your hands an ‘infant aircraft’, that is approximately two years short of maturity and reliability, prone to youthful tantrums, malfunctions, failures and post-manufacture squawks that will be yours to manage and overcome through warr anty, maintenance programs and professional relationships. With the purchase of a brand new aircraft, you should select the latest avionics advancements that can be afforded. The goal here is that the airplane will not require costly upgrades, or become technologically obsolete for several years. If you are selecting a new airplane, it’s important to avoid the common mistake of dismissing the purchase of an advanced avionics system in favor of cost savings. Upgrading later can not only be costlier, but may significantly add to the inconvenience of downtime (and loss of dispatch ability). Note that many later upgrades of this nature require significant interior removal within the aircraft. By getting the upgraded systems when you first buy your new aircraft, price and taxation are diluted through the acquisition cost and there will be no labor costs associated with the installation. On the more general subject of taxation, it is worth considering that many countries promote sales through tax incentives on new aircraft. It’s therefore essential that your legal and finance team be well-versed in the advantages of early depreciation, tax friendly locations,

self-leases and any other opportunities for money sa vings. For companies with heavy tax burdens, the purchase of a large asset may offset higher tax brackets. Finally, consider that when buying brand-new, you will want an experienced professional to accompany the aircraft through its manufacture and certification, assuring that you are getting a high quality jet right from the ‘cradle’.

Purchasing a Used Jet

The alternative option is to acquire a used jet. With current global financial conditions, exciting opportunities exist for the acquisition of very nice aircraft at an equally attractive price. Be sure to know your mission requirements thoroughly – not only for now, but for the medium-term, because you may find it tempting to buy a larger jet than you need because the purchase price is cheap. The operational costs on a larger airplane will certainly be a sticker shock to the unwary! Buying an older aircraft offers interesting opportunities providing the pedigree of the aircraft is nothing but

Hartzell Prop for PC-12 Passes Milestone Hartzell Propeller officials report the company has delivered more than 50 new Top Prop five-blade composite swept tip props for the Pilatus PC-12 fleet since introduction 18 months ago. It also has delivered more than 160 of the new propellers to Pilatus for new PC-12NG aircraft over that time period, bringing to more than 200 the total PC-12s flying with Hartzell’s new five-blade propellers. New Pilatus PC-12 NG aircraft feature the specially designed five-blade, 105-inch diameter composite propeller as standard equipment. The propellers are available under Hartzell Top Prop program for the Pilatus PC-12 fleet, which totals more than 1,400 business aircraft. The new structural composite five-blade propeller is lighter than alternative wood core five-blade propellers and seven pounds lighter than a four-blade aluminum propeller.

Air2Air concept is simple; build attractive Helicopter Landing Pad for the home, commercial business or airports. You may think this has been around for a while, but Russell Whitlock, Managing Director says, “We wanted to make the Helipad a part of your Helicopter, with the key mind set of safety first. The material we use is FAA approved and we build each pad unique to the environment around the home/business or airport.

The Lighting system is controlled by an App (Android & IOS), and allows the Pilot before take off, to turn the lights “on”. Once the App has sent the command, the Solar Powered Box, turns the lights on, and then sends a command back to the App advising the Pilot the lights have been turned “on”.”

Within the Helipad sand is installed. This allows also for the absorption of any spillage, or in the case of an emergency a fuel spillage. Sand is trapped into the pad, and this unique formula allows the Helipad to work extremely well with no sand being distributed upon the Helicopter taking off or landing. In the event of a spillage of any material, the sand absorbs it, and this can then be cut out and a new piece of Helipad installed in that location.

The Helipad can be built on concrete or grass and the main aim of the Helipad is to control foreign objects or debris from hitting the helicopter. This is also a safe landing place for the Helicopter as it will be the same place each time they land. So for your home or business, this could be very useful knowing you land in the same place each time. Russell says that Air2Air launched the Helipad at the HeliExpo on the 1st June, and enquiries have been coming in very strong, with lots of orders now under way. Expected lead times are now 8 weeks from order.

Swiss Pilot Pioneers Life-Saving Helicopter Technique Claude Vuichard has an idea that he is convinced will save lives and dramatically improve safety for helicopter users: the problem is, he has to convince the world to reject 70 years of received wisdom. Vuichard retired from the Swiss civil aviation authority in December, after a 35-year career in which he racked up more than 16,000 hours flying helicopters in mountain-rescue and other specialized roles. He developed a technique for recovering an aircraft when it enters vortex ring state conditions that worked even in mountains, where the conventional method will not help. “The old technique was to reduce the power and leave the vortex by flying forward,” he says. “But you lose altitude quite a lot, and if you’re close to the ground, you have an accident. My technique allows you to go out of the vortex sideways, using the tail rotor for thrust.” The lateral movement shifts the aircraft out of the downward phase of the vortex, through the upward phase, and away from the disturbed air. The vortex is exited within a second, without any significant loss of altitude. In 2011, Vuichard flew with Robinson Helicopters’ chief safety instructor, Tim Tucker, who was impressed. The Vuichard Recovery Technique has been added to Robinson’s teaching materials; Tucker has advocated for the method with the U.S. FAA, which is evaluating it, and the Los Angeles Police Department, which has been using it since January.

He has set up a non-profit organization, the Vuichard Recovery Aviation Safety Foundation (www.vrasf.org) and was at EBACE, trying to win support for his technique, trying to save lives.

The helicopter industry in Europe is facing many of the same issues that proponents are battling in the US. It would make sense for industry and user groups to work more closely on both sides of the Atlantic to counter the threats and unfriendly perceptions that are combining to limit the functionality of the helicopter. On a recent research trip to the US, I found that three common issues top, or nearly top, concerns in Europe and the US. • Drones, from the unregulated private sector through to the increasingly vocal and activist commercial sector, are already seeking airspace restrictions in order to fly beyond line of sight and in populated areas. And threatening to overtake the helicopter’s oft-touted versatility for urban transportation (if it ever were to be allowed) is the progress by such as Airbus and Uber in developing man-carrying drone-based systems for transportation in crowded cities. • Increasing airspace, city planning and noise restrictions that have prevented the development of conveniently-located heliports in urban areas. • Public acceptance of helicopters, which are often perceived as noisy, anti-social toys for the rich and famous. All of us in the helicopter industry can tell stories about angry neighbors calling the police because a helicopter is swirling around their homes and disturbing them. But when that complainer is laying with a broken leg on the ski slope the helicopter can’t get there quickly enough. I even know about doctors working in hospitals who complain about helicopter noise as soon as they leave work for the day and return to their urban homes. But Matt Zuccario, president of the US - based Helicopter Association International, topped it all when he told me that the mayor of New York City had received so many complaints about sightseeing helicopters that he forced tour operators to reduce trips by 50% and completely cut out flights on Sundays. HAI calculated the moves would cost $50 Million in revenues. But let me describe what I saw just one weekend before. We were staying at a mountain lake in upper Bavaria and trying to enjoy the peaceful quietness of this wonderful alpine region. But we couldn't, due to the

Airbus Helicopters has handed over an H145 to the helicopter squadron of the Saxony-Anhalt state police. The aircraft will be used for the entire spectrum of police tasks. Following in Baden-Wßrttemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia’s footsteps, Saxony-Anhalt is the third federal state in Germany to have purchased the helicopter. The helicopter’s equipment includes a thermal imaging camera, an operator workstation with a connection to the police computer network, an image and data transfer system, a searchlight, a rappelling / fast roping system and a sling system with a double hook capable of loads up to a tonne. The Saxony-Anhalt police helicopter squadron has flown helicopters from Airbus for 25 years. It currently owns a BO105 and two BK117. The new H145 will replace the BO105, and the two BK117 are planned to be replaced by an additional H145 in the future.

Why is it OK for villages or cities to attract noisy car races, to drill holes in your exhaust to assure your machine can be heard kilometers away, and yet the noise from a helicopter is unacceptable? It seems that helicopters are still seen as toys for wealthy people who want to avoid traffic jams when heading to their 65th floor office downtown or rushing to grab a lunch in Monte Carlo. But in the German Helicopter Association we know better. We have created the slogan "bee of aviation" to illustrate the value of helicopters. Society would be much poorer without the multiple services performed by helicopters, however these are mostly unnoticed (and unheard), as the majority of our duties takes place over unsettled areas. Powerline inspection, marking forests, firefighting, offshore transportation are among the examples. But we are endangered. First and foremost is the constant increase of restrictions and regulations because of the lack of public acceptance. Germany is a country of drivers, and automobile and motorcycle manufacturers have a positive image and a strong lobby. So we really do tolerate a lot from other industries. Do I have to mention that Germany also is at the top in producing helicopters, but this isn’t of the same economic importance? So how to improve the situation? We have to stress that helicopters aren’t fun toys for rich people but rather provide unrivalled services for society. We also have to make clear there is a real economic benefit from the use of helicopters. Next time, when you overdo your downhill rush on the slopes and crash into the snow with one leg in front and the other behind, I hope the heliport at the nearby hospital hasn't been closed because the residents complained about the noise, leaving you to wait for the Bernhardiner dog to climb the mountain and rescue you with a barrel of brandy. Spectators also had an opportunity to view aircraft of the rotary wing variety at the 4th annual Heli UK Expo which was hosted simultaneously by Wycombe Air Park.

Outside in the static park the aircraft proved popular with the trade delegates and the general public alike who were excited to have a chance to talk first hand to professionals about all things helicopter.

Hall C was filled by manufacturers from both the US and Europe, who bought together a number of machines for the trade and general public to view, both inside and out, and experience what it was like to sit in the pilots’ seat of a modern helicopter. In Hall C and on the static park there was also an opportunity to speak to a number of helicopter associated professionals who covered areas such as training, simulators, helicopter sales, interiors and maintenance.

Among those manufacturers on display were well know names such as Bell and Robinson helicopters from the US while Europe was represented by Leonardo, Marenco Swisshelicopter and Guimbal Helicopters. Throughout the three day event members of the general public and trade delegates also had a chance to view all the latest in avionics, navigation equipment, headsets and service items in Hall A. Ten crews from international helicopter sport battled it out at the 4th Heli UK Expo for not one but three competition titles over two days flying two events - the parallel slalom and the parallel fender. The world's best helicopter crews from Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Russia and the United Kingdom took to the airfield to fight it out for three separate titles. Two helicopters fly on parallel courses at the same time to complete the courses. The first day saw the slalom - a bucket full of water on a five metre rope being flown up and down a course of twelve gates ending with the bucket landing on 30cm table a metre off the ground. The second day consisted of the fender event. A boat fender is flown on a four metre rope to the first container and placed in to it. The rope is then extended to six and then eight metres being placed in to further containers. It's all about precise and accurate flying against the clock.

crews pushed the Brits off the score sheet with early favourites Yablokov and Podoinitsyn putting Monks and Barklem out. Perhaps small consolation being that Yablokov had the best time score in the slalom against Monks and scoring a clear round in just 76 s econds. The other British hope in the form of Rimmer and Rimmer were dismissed by the second Russian crew who were averaging 110 seconds with marginal mistakes. The quarter final saw Orehkov of Russia against Tsenter of Belarus and Yablokov against Morgenstern of Austria. The Russians quickly settled in to good flying with Orekhov and Yablokov both easily reaching the final. With the Russians going head to head in the final best of three, the nerves quickly started to show. Oehkov started faultlessly with Yablokov appearing to lose his form from the previous rounds scoring three faults compared to a clear round from Orekhov. The second heat saw a determined Yablokhov turn the tables on

The UK held the first ever leg of the brand new race event, the Helicopter World Cup. This event is new this year and involves seven legs in seven countries with the winners being crowned at the last leg of the event. Stage One had gold, silver and bronze medal places available along with the all-important points that require to be accumulated to launch the crews towards winning the overall titles. The second event was the 3rd Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup. This event was an open event so any one of the ten crews could walk away with the trophy. The current holders are the UK but there was tough competition. The third event was the highly prestigious “Queen's Cup Air Race Challenge Cup”. Awarded personally by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom. Annually the Royal Aero Club awards the hosting of the air race to one of its member organisations, this year the Helicopter Club of Great Britain won the nomination for 2017, appropriate with it celebrating the 50th anniversary. The Queens’ Cup could only be won by a crew from the UK and would be battled out over the best of three in the fender event to find the winner. With so much at stake the competition was going to be fierce. Russia are the current world champions and are the team to beat.

Day One First up was the qualifying to see who would be drawn against who, best of three to finalise the days running order. All were immediately down to business with the odd hint of nerves as the crews got in to their strides mastering flying a bucket on a five metre rope. The draw saw the top two British teams against the best from Russia, Belgium against Belarus and the Austrian’s hot shots against British newcomers Andrews and McCulloch. Both Russian

him and Podoinitsyn thedouble with gold medals in fender and slalom. As the Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup is an open event - this handed the Russian champions the triple.After two days of fantastic flying there was the Queens Cup Air Race Challenge Cup final to be flown. The top two British crews were going to battle it out, best of three to lift the Royal Aero Club trophy. The two crews taking part were British Helicopter Team captain, David Monks and his co-pilot Hugh Barklem in R22 G-ZAPY. They would be flying against father and son team Stuart and Chris Rimmer in their R44 G-IBMS. Both crews had fared well against the Russian might and now it was time to see the best of British showcased against each other - best of three with the winner picking up the historic Queens Cup. As the starter flags dropped Monks and Barklem where first off the blocks flying a fast fender but with several penalties, the steady hand of Stuart Rimmer handed round one to him. The second leg saw a cautious Monks complete a good run with Rimmer also employing steady tactics to ensure the best score possible. The second one went to Monks giving one all. With the prestigious Queen's Cup at stake it would be down to who could hold their nerve the longest. The crowd were well and truly behind both crews and this final was down to the last flight to separate the pair as someone had to win. Both crews set a determined pace. As the flew almost neck and neck up the course, the crowd cheered them through with both helicopters returning to the start line whilst the judges double checked the scores in this nail biting final. Victory was handed to Monks and Barklem with a score of just eight points separating them from Rimmer and Rimmer. A spectacular and entertaining final, two excellent crews flying their best to entertain the crowds. Two days of amazing flying from ten excellent crews not to mention the support of the judges, scorers and ground crew to make the whole event possible. Two historic firsts for the Helicopter Club of Great Britain as they hosted the first leg of the first Helicopter World Cup and the Queen’s Cup Air Race Challenge 2017, the Cup has not been awarded to a rotorcraft competition before.

Orekhov bringing it back to one all with everything to play for. With barely seven seconds separating them in time it went to the number of faults handing the victory 2-1 to Yablokov and Podoinitsyn. Orehkov had to settle for second with Tsenter and Striynock grabbing third place keeping Austria out of the medals.

Day Two The same format to set the flying order started the competition for day two, the turn of the fender. Qualifying saw Yablokov recapturing his form from the previous days flying recording the lowest qualifying time of 39.18 seconds with a clear round. This time the draw would see the two Russians up against each other in the quarter final and the other quarter final was Tsenter of Belarus against Morgenstern of Austria. The Russians battled it out with as little as two seconds separating them and Yablokov held his nerve to secure the first place in the semi-final. The other semifinal saw Tsenter and Morgenstern putting in clear rounds with everything hanging on timing. With one leg each, the crew from Austria were hot on the heels of the Belarus crew who flew fast and faultlessly to secure the second place in the semi-final. Third and fourth was a Russia/Austria battle with the Austrian crew flying without incurring any penalties to secure a medal position. Yesterday’s winners, Yablokov and Podoinitsyn were now facing Tsenter and Striyonock for first place. Both crews were showing not a hint of nerves as the starters flags dropped. Both with clear rounds and less than sevenseconds difference in time, round one went to Yablokov.

First Leonardo AW169 Arrives in Sweden Sweden’s first Leonardo AW169 arrived in Östersund recently. This aircraft is the first in a batch of four AW169s ordered by Babcock Scandinavian Air Ambulance for its HEMS operations in northern Sweden. The new helicopters will replace the current AS365 Dauphin helicopters in Gällivare, Östersund and Lycksele this year. The forth one will be used as a back-up aircraft. These are the very first AW169s in the Nordic countries, but more helicopters are already expected. Norwegian Airlift will take delivery of three 169s for its marine pilot hoist transfer operations later this year.

The brand-new medium-sized twin engine AW169, developed by AgustaWestland prior to its name change, was certified by EASA in 2015 and by FAA in 2016. It made its first flight in 2012. Approximately 50 AW169s have been constructed to date, and many of these are deployed in a wide range of applications worldwide, including HEMS, executive transport, offshore transport and wind farm support. ■

Oxfam London To Sydney Crew Use Same Aircraft To Take Part In Prestigous Air Race Over the weekend of 3-4 June, the second race weekend of the Royal Aero Club 3R’s racing season took place. Amazing weather at Llanbedr Airport, shortlisted contender for UK’s and Europe’s first commercial Spaceport, in the Snowdonia National Park, saw 12 planes compete for The Gower Cup on the Saturday and The Goodyear Trophy on the Sunday. With Robins, Pipers, Cessna’s, Grumman’s, a CAP 10 and several varieties of RV, the race course took the planes across the water to Pwllheli, then Abersoch and a sharp turn back to the airfield. The Saturday Gower Cup was won by pilot Hamish Mitchel with his navigator Derek Pake in their Cessna Float Plane,

which was the slowest plane to compete at a handicap speed of 106.87 kts, second place went to Ian Harding in an RV4 and third to Austarlian Andy Hardy with Sam Kidd navigating in a PA28 which they flew from London to Sydney in 2013 to raise money for Oxfam. For the Goodyear Trophy, in his RV4, Ian Harding who was the fastest competitor to enter at a handicap speed of 167.69 kts won the Sunday race. Second place went to an RV6 flown by Jonathan Willis with first time navigator Gurcharan Singh who are both EasyJet Captains at Luton and third place went to Derryn McMaster and his navigator Christine Carlin who flew a Robin. ■

Jet Aviation awarded two Medevac conversions for Embraer Legacy aircraft in Basel Jet Aviation has recently been awarded two medical evacuation (Medevac) conversions at its maintenance facility in Basel. An Embraer Legacy 600 is being converted for a customer in Asia. For a customer in the Middle East, an Embraer Legacy 650 conversion is underway. Jet Aviation developed and owns a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) that ensures short reconfiguration cycle periods and extreme flexibility in the operation of Embraer Executive Jets. The company is now converting the two Embraer Legacy aircraft to serve both as Medevac and VIP charter aircraft. Both aircraft will be approved through the company’s EASAPart 21 organization. With Jet Aviation’s modifications, it will be possible to convert the aircraft from VIP charter aircraft to medical evacuation aircraft within just a few hours. As VIP charter aircraft, the two Legacy’s will each accommodate up to fourteen passengers. When converted for medical evacuation, the Legacy 650 will present four patient stretcher and loading systems; the Legacy 600 will support two.

Leonardo: Helikorea Orders Three GrandNew Helicopters For EMS The GrandNew helicopters add to the two AW169s already in service by HeliKorea. The EMS fleet in South Korea consists of entirely Leonardo helicopters. More than 50 Leonardo helicopters are on order by Korean customers The GrandNew light twin helicopter expands in the Republic of Koreawith the order of three units by HeliKorea for Emergency Medical Service. The order is a testament to the success of the type as the benchmark light twin EMS helicopter on the market. The first two helicopters will be delivered at the end of 2017 while the third will be added to the fleet in 2018. These aircraft will join two AW169s ordered by HeliKorea in 2016 for EMS missions. With these deliveries, the entirety of the EMS fleet in South Korea will consist of Leonardo helicopters as of January 2018.

Airborne LINX Certified on Large Helicopters Airborne LINX - As individual as your mission - does not only refer to the integrated system components but also to the customer’s platform. Airborne Technologies has proven that their Airborne LINX integration solution is perfectly suitable for large helicopters. The certification of a TRAKKA A800 searchlight on an EC145 T2 of the Norsk Luftambulanse AS was the final step of a new Airborne LINX solution for a Large Helicopter. The mounting solution of the box on the outside of the helicopter provides additional room inside the cabin and protects the control unit of the searchlight from harsh weather conditions. Just prior this project, Airborne Technologies upgraded a Kazakhstan MOI SAR EC145, with a state-of-the-art t actical workstation including a foldable full HD screen, Euronav RN5, the Airborne LINX Mission Management Unit (MMU) and a Video Stabilizing Unit (VMU).
