Kittyhawk Found in the Sahara
E
MAX HOLSTE
Nearly 70 years after the aircraft made a forced landing in the Egyptian Sahara desert, a former 260 Squadron Curtiss P-430E Kittyhawk has now been discovered lying where it landed in nearly 100% complete condition. The aircraft was being transferred to a maintenance unit when it is believed it was forced down by anti-aircraft fire during the WW2 desert campaign in 1942. Although the desert has sand-blasted the airframe, it was almost all there, but unfortunately, since its discovery has now seen various parts stripped by “trophy hunters” in the area. It is located 200miles (320kms) from the nearest town and at present it is still being decided where and how to move it.

SLEPCEV STORCH
DE HAVILLAND
Widely reported in the British media has been the story that there could be 20 or more complete Supermarine Spitfires buried in crates in Burma. The airframes, extra to requirements post-war, were buried in this way and forgotten. That is until now. Although their current condition is unknown, the UK prime Minister, David Cameron brought the subject up during meetings with his opposite number during a recent visit to the area. The plight of the buried aircraft came to Mr Cameron’s attention at the behest of a farmer from Scunthorpe, North Lincs, UK who is responsible for locating them at a former RAF base using radar imaging technology.
“They were just buried there in transport crates,” Mr Cundall said. “They were waxed, wrapped in greased paper and their joints tarred. They will be in near perfect condition.” “I’m hoping the discovery will generate some jobs. They will need to be stripped down and re-riveted but it must be done. My dream is to have a flying squadron at air shows.”

Spanish “Taper-wing” DH 87A Restored One of only three surviving DH 87A’s in the original “taper-wing” configuration has gone on display at the Spanish Air Force’s Museo del Aire at Cuatro Viuentos, Madrid in March. This follows a complete restoration by a Spanish AF unit. The aircraft was discovered in a barn, in Aragon during 1998. The aircraft was used by the Republican forces during the civil war and post war as an aerial photographic aircraft in the 1950’s before storage.
REPLICA
Albatros Flies in Germany The reproduction Albatros D.III constructed by Koloman Mayrhofer, owned by Eberhard Fritsch had its first flight from Oberschleissheim airfield near Munich in midApril. French test pilot, Roger-Louis Texier was at the controls for the 16-minute flight.
RE 8 and Albatros for RAF Museum
David Cundall, 62, spent 15 years doggedly searching for the planes, an exercise that involved 12 trips to Burma and cost him more than £130,000. When he finally managed to locate them in February, he was told Mr Cameron “loved” the project and would intervene to secure their repatriation.
RESTORATION
1958 DHC-2
Kent-UK brothers Gerry and Alan Smith have acquired a 1938 Percival Vega Gull from the owner in Queensland, Australia. The rare four-seat monoplane, one of only two survivors will soon be freighted to the UK where it will undergo a complete restoration to return it to flying condition.
The Hawker Hurricane Mk. I HC-452 which is part of the large collections of Aviation Museum of Central Finland can be seen at this year’s Jämi Fly In air show. The conservation work conducted by the museum on this legendary World War Two Era fighter aircraft will be completed shortly. The Jämi Fly In 2012 air show will be the first opportunity for the general public to see the Hurricane after the completion of the conservation work, during early Summer. The air show, is the Finnish Aeronautical Association’s main Airshow. It will be held on July 7-8 at Jämi Airfield (EFJM). More information on the aircraft visit -

Arriving from New Zealand for the summer season, are two World War One reproduction aircraft for the RAF Museum. They are a Royal Aircraft Factory RE.8 and Albatros D.Va. The replicas were built in New Zealand by The Vintage Aviator Ltd., at Wellington. It is hoped that the aircraft may be able to participate in several summer shows before joining the RAF Museum exhibits at the Grahame-White Hangar at Hendon.

Thunderbolt Flies at Duxford The Duxford-based, Fighter Collection’s P-47 Thunderbolt returned to the air on April 21 following its recent restoration. This is the first time the earlier “Razorback” version of the Thunderbolt has flown in the UK for over 50 years.
Germany’s sole remaining airworthy Fouga CM.170 Magister has been purchased by the new Fliegendes Museum Mendig, and the aircraft was flown from Manching Airfield, Bavaria to Mendig, near the Nurburgring race track at the end of April. The 54-year old machine will now operate from this airfield as the museum’s second jet, the other a MoraneSaulnier MS.760 Paris.
