Tips for Operating Your Engine in Cold Weather heater. Both options pose a risk of leaking Carbon Monoxide into the cabin, so these systems should be checked on their required interval (or earlier if you suspect an issue). Matt: When and how should I pre-heat my Lycoming engine? Chris: For most Lycoming models, pre-heat should be applied anytime temperatures are at, or below 10˚F. It is recommended that these guidelines be followed even when multi-viscosity oil is used.

As we enter the winter season, now is a great opportunity to review engine operating procedures in cold weather. Matt Buckle at Airpart Supply Ltd. spoke with Chris Gayman, Supervisor of Product Support at Lycoming, to ask some questions about cold weather operations. Matt: What maintenance items are important during cold weather operations? Chris: At Lycoming Engines we emphasize customers should review and follow Service Instruction 1014 (Lubricating Oil Recommendations) and Service Instruction 1505 (Cold Weather Starting) before operating aircraft in cold weather conditions. (A comprehensive library of knowledge-based topics and service publications are available at Lycoming.com.) To ensure the engine is easy to start, is it important to ensure that your ignition system is up-to-date on its maintenance. Spark plugs and magneto points should be properly gapped and ready to provide a strong spark. Poor condition of other systems such as induction, priming, exhaust and carburetor heat can influence the starting and operation of the engine, so those items should be inspected to ensure good condition and operation. Ensure you are using the correct oil for the temperature range in which you will be operating. Using the incorrect oils can result in inadequate oiling directly after the engine is started and cause damage to your engine. Service Instruction 1014 provides guidance on what oils to use. The properties of multi-viscosity oils make it applicable across a much wider temperature range, and they may be advantageous to those pilots that are trying to escape the cold weather and head towards warmer climates. Alternate air or carburetor heat systems should be inspected for proper operation. Flight into snow or icing conditions can clog air inlets and air filters. If the alternate air system does not operate correctly, ice and snow buildup may starve an engine of air; this could reduce your available power or cause the engine to quit. Batteries should not be overlooked. Freezing temperatures can destroy an aircraft battery. The battery with a full charge performs nicely, while one that is discharged will freeze. Once a battery freezes, the only remedy is to replace it. So it’s worth taking preventive measures. Should the battery run down during an attempt to start, do not leave it; get it charged immediately. Be certain that the master switch is always OFF while the aircraft is parked between flights. Most importantly, you should have your heating system checked regularly. General Aviation aircraft tend to heat using one of two methods: a heat exchanger on the engine’s exhaust system, or a standalone combustion

In addition to hard-starting, not pre-heating the entire engine and oil supply system as recommended may result in minor amounts of abnormal wear to internal engine parts, and eventually lead to reduced engine performance and shortened TBO time. Please note that engines should only be pre-heated a few hours or the evening before the intended flight, as preheating can have the side effect of moisture collection which can cause corrosion problems. Only heat your engine when you intend to fly it. Multiple methods exist for pre-heating your engine. Options may include – but are not limited to – a heated oil sump pad, heated cylinder bands or probes, and warm air being pumped around the engine using a torpedo style heater. The use of a heated dipstick is not recommended by Lycoming, although most other methods are considered satisfactory. Permanently installed devices should follow all guidance provided by their manufacturers. Matt: What items can I check during my pre-flight? Chris: Look for fuel contamination before every flight by religiously draining fuel tanks and sumps. Water is one of the most likely contaminants of aviation gasoline. Flight into freezing temperatures makes any amount of moisture in the fuel system very critical. Even a tiny bubble of moisture may freeze in the fuel line and totally cut off the flow of fuel.

Matt: What considerations should I take when starting the engine?

Take this opportunity to continue to pre-heat the engine while also taking yourself and your passengers inside to pre-heat with a hot chocolate. Using ground power can help provide an extra boost if the battery is weak and the starter is spinning the engine too slow.

Although it is tempting to just keep grinding away with the starter to get it going, this is not recommended. If engine start has not occurred after three ten-second periods of operation with a pause between each, a fiveminute period is required to cool the starter.

If you can open your cowling, take the opportunity to inspect the exhaust system for signs of leaks. Leaks can be a source of carbon monoxide and should be corrected immediately before flying.

Chris: First, follow the appropriate Pilot’s Operating Handbook for your aircraft. It provides the best recommendation for operation of your specific aircraft. Understand that the engine may be harder to start when it’s cold.

Once on board the aircraft, check the fuel-selector valve for freedom of movement. The fuel-selector valve can become frozen, and this is something you will want to identify while still on the ground. If flight is planned into freezing temperatures, the preflight inspection should include observation of the relief opening in the engine breather tube. Moisture can freeze to the end of the breather and if the additional relief is blocked, it could result in a loss of engine oil.

A Brief Introduction to

Nicholson McLaren

Nicholson McLaren is a precision engineering company based in Berkshire on the fringes of the UK’s Motorsport Valley. Employing more than 30 personnel, with engineers from top-level motorsport and the aviation industries, Nicholson McLaren’s core business is in the field of design, development and service for motorsport and light aviation powertrain. The range of expertise and capabilities within the company encompass component design, reverse engineering, precision manufacturing, engine development, engine bench testing, bespoke engine building, race preparation, engine control and management and component inspection. Founded in 1972 by John Nicholson the company quickly enjoyed high profile success when NME engines powered McLaren Racing to their Formula 1 World Championship wins in 1974 with Emerson Fittipaldi and in 1976 with James Hunt. The company made excellent progress through the following three decades when NME enjoyed World Championship success in various Formulas in Motorsport that include F3000, F5000 and Group C endurance racing.

Notable Years

2001 was an important year in Nicholson McLaren’s evolution. Mike Endean (Founder of Xtrac) became a major shareholder of the company. Mike’s support enabled the company to relocate from West London to Finchampstead, Berkshire (the current base), and with investment in new engine test facilities, CNC manufacturing, and inspection Nicholson McLaren evolved so that its engine build shop could support a wide variety of engine types and technologies.

It was in 2006 that Nicholson McLaren entered into light aviation engine maintenance. This sector of the company is focused on maintaining engines manufactured by Lycoming and Continental Motors for fixed-wing and rotary aircraft to EASA Part 145 accredited standards. With spare capacity, inserting aviation engine maintenance into the company through business acquisition was a logical step in the development and growth of Nicholson McLaren.

Forty Years’ Experience

Today Nicholson McLaren has an enviable list of capabilities that are based on over 40 years of experience in the industry that (in addition to Lycoming and Continental) are briefly summarised here: •

Cosworth DFV/R: These engines are Nicholson McLaren’s heritage and its engineers remain enthusiastic in servicing or supporting them. In the main, they are raced in Historic F1 series around the world. Jaguar V12: Nicholson McLaren has built a number of Jaguar V12 engines over the years that include the powerplant for Lister as used in Le Mans 24 hours, the renowned Silk Cut Jaguar XJR 12 Le Mans and the fabulous Broadspeed XJ6 Touring Car. Jaguar 6-Cylinder: Nicholson McLaren has applied its resources and experience in developing the 3.8 engine for competition use in the E Type Jaguar where its clients

have enjoyed various levels of success on the race circuits of Europe. Nissan V6 900 + BHP: Over the years Nicholson McLaren built and rebuilt a number of Nissan V6 engines for Group C endurance racing. Producing 900+ BHP, these quad cam V6 motors are very highly engineered. Mecanique Aviation Traction (Matra): Matra was a pioneering French aviation and racecar manufacturer that enjoyed success in the 1970s when its cars had outright wins in 24 hour Le Mans and great success in Formula 1. Nicholson McLaren recently completed a major project whereby over a three-year program it reverse-engineered the period Matra V12 engine and manufactured a total of 10 complete new engines inclusive of all ancillaries and fittings (see the video on www.nicholsonmclaren.co.uk). NME XB V8: The Cosworth XB engine started life as a turbo-charged methanol fuelled motor for the late 1990s Champ C Series. In total around 40–50 engines were manufactured, and in 2003 Nicholson McLaren was able to purchase the rights to the engine from Cosworth. Complete engines and a spares package were included in the package. Following the purchase Nicholson McLaren re-engineered the motor to be normally aspirated and run regular

pump fuel. Three variants were developed including 2.8, 3.3 and 3.5 which were campaigned in LMP, Speed championships and Hill Climb. Having won numerous Championships in Europe and Australia over the years the NME XB continues to be an extremely competitive motor.

Into the Next Decade

As it progresses into the next decade, Nicholson McLaren will be focused on developing its aviation business into exciting new markets that are emerging from Asia, whilst its automotive business is working at OE level in the development of niche road car engines.

Since 2006 Nicholson McLaren has increased its capabilities to cover overhaul and repairs on Lycoming and Continental as well as all the engine ancillaries that includes Bendix and Slick Magnetos, including the Dual Magneto, TCM, Bendix, Marvel Schebler and AVStar Fuel systems, Hartzell Turbo controllers, Hartzell, McCauley and Woodward Propeller Governors, Cylinder repairs, Crankshaft Ultrasonic Inspection and NDT D1 Rating. French simulator and training device manufacturer Alsim has sold an ALX to Central Flying Academy of Rand Airport, near Johannesburg, South Africa. The device will support the academy’s PPL, CPL and IR training and was due to be delivered by the end of 2018. Alsim said that CFS had been “introduced to the ALSIM ALX at Oshkosh 2017 in the USA by other flight training schools, and it was fully endorsed by existing clients.� The ALSIM ALX simulator offers up to four classes of aircraft – from single engine piston, twin engine piston, twin turbine up to medium category twin jet (generic B737/ A320). Designed and approved for ATPL, CPL/MCC, JOC and their pilot requirements, the ALX offers advanced technology simulation equipment tailored to your training needs. Ian Stevens, Central Flying Academy’s CEO, explained, “We see the EASA/ FAA-compliant ALX as a perfect fit as it is an extension of the professional standards set by our training academy. Alsim, which is internationally recognized, has a large R&D department and are certain to remain at the forefront of the flight simulator market. Michael Fuchs, CEO of Engineered Power Systems, said: “The company encountered delays in the past year primarily due to funding and the lengthy software certification process. Synthesising all of the new technology with established procedures and materials created some significant challenges. This is a clean sheet design that incorporates a long list of innovations intended to enhance engine efficiency and reliability. Though they had an impact on our timeline and finances, we’re now beyond the obstacles and are comfortably on our way to the finish line.� EPS successfully demonstrated a proof-ofconcept engine using a Cirrus SR-22 G2 airframe several years ago. It now expects to resume flight testing using a conforming copy of the engine. Once certified by the FAA, the company says it will develop a series of STCs for aircraft types that can benefit most from a diesel retrofit. www.eps.aero.

AEA said avionics sales of reporting companies topped $2 billion for the first nine months of 2018, compared with $1.73 billion for the first nine months of 2017. AEA president Paula Derks said, “With robust growth in sales, the industry is on pace to produce the largest dollar amount of year-end avionics sales since the reporting process began back in 2012.� ADS-B and other equipment mandates saw the retrofit market account for a 57.3 percent share of the market. North America accounted for 77.7 percent of total sales. Twenty-one avionics manufacturers participate in the avionics report. www.aea.net

MT-Propeller Receives FAA STC For C208 MT-Propeller has received an STC approval from the US FAA for installation of its five-blade propeller on the Cessna 208 Blackhawk Series, now also with PT6A-140 engine. Germany-based company received the STC for its Quiet Fan Jet scimitar composite propeller MTV-27-1-E-C-F-R(P)/CFR245-55a on the Cessna 208, 208B Blackhawk with the engines Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A and new with Pratt & Whitney PT6A-140. This installation is also supplemental type certified by EASA STC 10058942 Rev.1 and ANAC Brazil STC 10058942 Rev1. MT-Propeller vice president Martin Albrecht said advantages included almost vibration free propeller operation; bonded-on nickel alloy leading edge for best erosion protection of the blades; unlimited blade life; significant inside and outside noise reduction; increased ground clearance for less blade tip erosion; FOD repairable blades; 200 ft shorter take-off distance; and three knot cruise speed increase. There is also an optional rpm reduction to 1950 rpm for the XP42 aircraft. “All models comply with the strict German noise regulations 2010– LandeplatzLärmschutz-Verordnung–for unrestricted airport operation in Germany and other European countries,â€? added Albrecht. UAvionix SkyBeacon Approved by FAA On 15th November UAvionix issued an update saying that the skyBeacon data package had been accepted by the FAA with a 272 aircraft AML. This allowed the company to start shipping units by the end of November. The company has issued advice to aircraft owners on nstallation, wingtip fairing adapters and the upcoming tailBeacon, along with skylight and skySensor for starboard wingtips. When in October the company announced skyBeacon had received five TSOs it expected the STC announcement to follow shortly, but hit a snag which required flight testing of a minor modification. Meanwhile the FAA relaunched its $500 rebate program, which UAvionix said led to a huge number of enquiries. The Approved Model List (AML) contains 272 aircraft models from Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, American Champion, Maule, Boeing, Swift, Mooney, Aviat, and others. “This is the single largest AML for any UAT ADS-B solution,” noted the company. An FAA memo entitled Installation Approval for ADS-B OUT Systems, says: “the FAA explains that after an STC is achieved for ADS-B OUT equipment, additional installations can be accomplished with an A&P with Inspection Authorization (IA) so long as the installation does not require airframe modification. This process requires completion of form FAA Form 337 Major Repair and Alteration.” www.uavionix.com

Advent Aircraft Systems of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has received FAA STC approval for a revision of the King Air B300/B300X flight manual to allow the aircraft to be equipped with Advent eABS brakes. The STC effort was supported by Textron Aviation, said Advent. It says the revision offers “up to a 7% reduction in take-off field length (TOFL) at typical higher, hotter and/or heavier conditions thanks to improvements in accelerate-stop performance, with up to 10% available at more extreme conditions.” The company also says a “modest reduction” – up to 4% – in landing distance is achievable when higher/hotter/heavier. “This is an important STC for the eABS,” said Advent vice president–programs Don Taylor. “While the primary benefit of eABS for the King Air is overall runway safety and reduced costs, this STC now offers B300 operators additional range/payload and airport options, increasing the usefulness of their aircraft.” www.aircraftsystems.aero

Jersey First for Digital Tower Capability Jersey Airport in the Channel Islands has become the first certified remote digital tower in the British Isles. The tower commenced live operational trials in November with a remote facility controlling live air traffic, and it was due to be certified by year-end. The remote facility provides a contingency if the main ATC tower has to be evacuated. Images of the airfield are delivered to the remote tower from 11 HD cameras. These images are ‘stitched’ together and the resulting panoramic picture is displayed on three large screens. The remainder of the equipment is identical to the existing systems used in the conventional tower. The digital tower system was supplied by Austrian company Frequentis, while Systems Interface Limited supported Ports of Jersey and Frequentis with the installation and integration of the equipment. Digital remote towers also have the potential to superimpose aircraft labels with call-sign information onto the live picture, or using infra-red to improve visibility of aircraft in bad weather. Jersey is already using two pan-tilt zoom cameras, one facing north and the other south, to provide a ‘smart binoculars’ function that will also be available to controllers in the conventional tower. Gomolzig Aircraft Services The Gomolzig GmbH was founded in 1952, and since its inception has thrived by taking on new challenges in a very broad and diverse range of aviation approvals, capabilities and skills, including project and engineering management, CAMO, spares and maintenance support. Moreover, Gomolzig has become a contracted design organisation for many of its customers. Naturally Gomolzig history has given it a great depth of aviation experience, though its core skill has remained solid throughout the speciality of design, manufacture and repair of lightweight metallic structures.

The Complete Engineering Package

In June 2018 the company changed its name to Gomolzig Aircraft Services GmbH (GAS) as part of a restructure to meet an expanding, global customer base. Approved to carry out minor/major repairs, issue permits to fly, and to issue flight conditions, today GAS holds EASA Pt 21J Design, Pt 21G Manufacturing and Pt 145 Maintenance.

Dealing with the customer’s initial inquiry to establish the requirement, an assessment is then made to determine what physically needs to be removed or fitted to integrate the new engine and start the design process.

These approvals ensure control and a consistently high standard throughout all of Gomolzig’s processes – from design, prototype to engineering an item, and carrying out serial production and repair where required – leading to a successful end certification. GAS also holds the Type Certificates (TC) for the BRAVO AS-202; Ruschmeyer; WDL Airship; and Do28G92 conversion to a Walter turbine. Its Engineering Department has generated over 100 Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) for the Gomolzig Quiet Flight silencer system and over 50 STCs for camera hatch and mission equipment installations, along with STCs for engine modifications/conversions to Diesel and MoGas. Following are some of the engine and MoGas conversions GAS carries out: 1. Do28 with Walter M601D-2 turboprop or a GE Czech H75-200 turboprop. 2. Cessna 172 RG, to fit to Lycoming IO-360-C1E6 with either propeller MTV-12-B/183-17 or Mc C B2D34C207/78TCA-1. 3. Cessna R182/FR 182 (RG): Modification to MoGas operation. 4. Robin DR400RP to fit Lycoming O-540 engine. 5. Robin DR300/400: Modification to MoGas operation. 6. Diamond Super Dimona HK36R from the Rotax 80hp engines to the 100hp engines. 7. Beech 99 to fit PT6-34.

TC for the AS-202 BRAVO

The Bravo is an ideal full aerobatic aircraft for Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) and it is the aim of GAS to re-introduce an updated version to the training community. The Bravo is a strong, reliable, proven primary training aircraft able to provide a true training experience for basic flight and UPRT, aspects of flight training which have become neglected, and in this age of Fly-by Wire are considered redundant by some. Understanding the true importance of such training, GAS seeks to develop conventional basic training aircraft and the AS-202 Bravo is an ideal aircraft to help fill that void at an affordable price and as a costeffective operation.

The engineering department at GAS manages the whole process of engine conversion, modification and major or minor repairs, which are all carried out inhouse at the company’s facility in Schwelm.

Next, designs are drawn out, structural and stress analysis conducted, weight, balance and increase in performance calculated, flight test requirements established, checklist, flight and aircraft maintenance manuals updated, noise footprint measured, and many other areas resolved.

HELICOPTER EXHAUST WELDING

GAS greatly benefits from having the manufacturing in the same facility, enabling prototyping, problemsolving and kit-building to become streamlined with direct links. The final assembly can then be installed at GAS’ FBO at Siegerland airport or issued as a modification kit. The engineering department carries out the reengineering of obsolete or obsolescent components and parts which follow the same processes.

Hand-in-Hand Production & Repair

Not only does GAS carry out low volume serial production, its repair work in support of MRO covers multiple facets of engineering skills and disciplines including sheet metal, tubes and pipes to jigs and tools while the company workforce provides the hands-on discipline of welding, soldering, riveting, forming, machining and laser.

HATCH WELDING

Welding repairs to jet pipes, exhausts, ducts, engine mounts and frames along with other metal parts for commercial aircraft and helicopters in support of maintenance checks is routine. The repair capability at GAS is vast, from aluminium arm caps for passenger seats, to A4 Skyhawk tailpipes, stretchers and seats, to mirror arms. Operating its FBO at Siegerland Airport, EASA Pt 145 aircraft maintenance is carried out by GAS covering a wide capability encompassing gliders, motor gliders, aircraft up to 5.7 tonnes and small helicopters, and modifications and damage repairs are performed in its hangars.

Aircraft Insurance Rates Set to Soar

The Trig Avionic aerobatics team has decided to stop flying displays with two bright yellow Pitts S1 aircraft after five years of displays, switching instead to focus on a new venture, Ultimate Warbird Flights. “Trig Aerobatic Team pilots Richard Grace and Dave Puleston have finally landed their bright yellow Pitts aircraft for the last time,” said the company. “This marks an exciting change in direction – both pilots remain committed to working with Trig Avionics and promoting their products under a new venture – Ultimate Warbird Flights.”

Lloyds of London reportedly decided to introduce policy supporting this in response to UK regulator the Financial Conduct Authority bringing in new rules. In the US the aviation insurance market has quickly swung from a soft to a hard market, according to Aviation Specialty Insurance. Aircraft owners and operators are being warned that their rates could increase considerably on renewal. Along with changes in the industry (for example Marsh buying JLT, which owns Haywards Aviation), wider industry losses from accidents such as the Lion Air Boeing 737 Max crash in Indonesia in October and various helicopter crashes, along with claims flowing from the California wild fires, have put pressure on insurers. Underwriter Russell Mason, of Antares, an independent managing agent at Lloyds, told the AOPA UK Members Working Group recently that premiums were set to rise over the next few months, and pointed to hurricane damage as another pressure on insurers. He said premiums are artificially low as the market has been very competitive for a few years, giving an example of a Cessna 150 group paying £900 now when it was £1,500 ten years ago. “It should be much higher,” he said. Mason noted that his company wrote around 400 policies through Haywards and other brokers, but will not relinquish this business which will “go to other underwriters” who are only likely to take the policies on based on increasing premiums by 10-25%, he suggested. Some other points Mason pointed out included that hangarage doesn’t make much difference to premiums (as they can sometimes collapse, for example); and that cover based on hours flown is not a sound product, in his opinion, as it may tip the balance towards pilots deciding not to fly – thus lowering their experience level – and that the same number of accidents are likely to occur across GA but with less premium income, which is not necessarily sustainable. He noted that pilots may now be asked questions about whether they are repeat airspace infringers, and that pilots and owners should look out for premiums being the same but some of the things covered being removed, such as for “betterment.” Chris Varley, CEO of Approach Aviation Insurance, suggested that aircraft owners shop around for quotes even if only to try to lower the premium offered by their existing brokers. This can be done very simply, he said, by forwarding the renewal quote to the brokers. He warned, however, that before signing on the dotted line for new insurance owners/operators should check “the security behind the quotes.” www.lloyds.com

Piston deliveries were up 8.3 percent, turboprops 5.6 percent and business jets 3.0 percent. Total shipments were up 6.1 percent at 1,625 units, an increase of 94 aircraft over the 1,531 delivered in the same nine-month in 2017. Very light jet deliveries were once again on the rise, especially when including Cirrus, which delivered 41 units to the end of Q3 2018 but this was just the start of it spooling up its production process for the SF50 single-engine jet. With deliveries up 5.6 percent, the turboprop market seems to be in better shape than business jets. But this could have been accounted for by increased deliveries of agricultural aircraft, at 121 units compared to 111 in 2017. Counting just the business turboprops, deliveries totaled 274 units this year, up from 263 in 2017. In addition, 99 business turboprops were delivered in the third quarter compared with 112 in 2017. The leader in business turboprop OEMs were Cessna, with 60 deliveries, narrowly edging out Beechcraft (also a Textron company), which reported 59. Both had better year-to-date numbers than last year, with each up from 55 the year before. On a quarter to quarter comparison, both Cessna and Beechcraft lagged behind their 2017 totals, with Cessna having 24 compared with 33 in 2017, and Beechcraft having 19 compared to 24 in 2017. Third place in turboprop deliveries went to Pilatus with 53 deliveries, down slightly from the 54 it reported in 2017. Pilatus Q3 figures were also down, from 23 a year ago to 21. Piper captured fourth place in business turboprops with 38, up from 31 in 2017. For the quarter Piper was also up at 15 from 12 in 2017. Not far behind was Daher, in fifth place with 33, down from 36

the year before. For the quarter Daher was also down at 11 units compared to 13. In sixth place was Quest, 20 deliveries for the year so far, down from 23. For the quarter Quest was even with five deliveries in the third quarter both this year and last. New Zealand’s Pacific Aerospace finished in seventh place with eight deliveries, up one from seven for the first nine months last year. For just the third quarter Pacific Aerospace was ahead with three units, up from one a year ago. Piaggio, with three deliveries this year, was in eighth place, although the company had none in the third quarter of either year. Piaggio joins Textron’s Beechcraft in being the only two companies reporting deliveries in the multi-engine turboprop market, which was once dominantly large but today represents just a minority segment of business aviation manufacturing. Writing for GA Buyer sister publication AvBuyer, independent consultant Mike Potts said he expected business turboprops to finish 2018 in the 335- to 340-unit range. The piston market has been fairly flat over the past five years, ranging from a high of 1,129 units in 2014 to a low of 1,019 in 2016. In 2017 it finished at 1,085. Potts said 2018 could see deliveries finishing in the 1,175 to 1,200 range. Overall, piston numbers were up by 8.3 percent, from 724 airplanes year-to-date last year to 784 this year. Leading the piston manufacturers in single-engine deliveries for the first nine months of 2018 was Cirrus, with 262 units, up from 236 for 2017 – a gain of 11.02 percent. Cirrus was also up from the quarter, from 87 units to 90. A distant second was Cessna with 125 deliveries, down from 140 in 2017. For the third quarter, however, Cessna was ahead at 45 units, up from 42 in 2017. In third place was Piper, which is emerging as a more significant player in this market than it has been. It reported 90 deliveries, up from 54 for the first three quarters of 2017. For the third quarter Piper had 41, up from 23. “Could Piper overtake Cessna?” asked Potts. “That idea would once have been preposterous, but with just 35 units now separating the two and just four in this year’s third quarter, the notion is no longer impossible.” Italian manufacturer Tecnam was in fourth place in piston single deliveries with 60, up from 47 for 2017 – a 27.66 percent gain. Diamond was in fifth place in piston single deliveries with 34, down from 54 in 2017. Diamond’s twin-engine entries sold better than their single-engine aircraft. Extra was in sixth place, Cubcrafters seventh place and Pipistrel in eighth, with 11 deliveries, equalling its 2017 performance. Seven piston manufacturers reported 10 or fewer deliveries for the year so far. This group included some formerly iconic manufacturers including Textron’s Beechcraft unit, as well as Mooney, and Waco, along with lesser known firms such as Mahindra. Others included American Champion, Maule and Chinese builder AVIC. The piston twin segment continued to grow faster than any other segment in business aviation, deliveries being up 22.43 percent, with 131 units delivered in Q1-3 compared with 107 in 2017. For just the third quarter piston twins totaled 50 units, up from 39 in 2017, or a gain of almost 28.21 percent. The leading builder in piston twins is Diamond, with 62 units and 29 in the third quarter alone. Diamond was followed by TECNAM, with 33 for the year to the end of Q3. Piper was next with 24, and Beechcraft added 12. www.gama.aero

But what is commonplace for airlines was considered financially unattainable for many flight schools and clubs. That is until now because the revolutionary FLIGHTSIM G1000 has become the first simulator designed by aviation experts and flight instructors specifically for use in clubs and flight schools. A training option for PPL, CPL or IR training that was previously difficult to finance is now easily possible

with the EASA-certified (BITD/FNPT I) simulator. The FLIGHTSIM G1000 has been designed to replicate the flight characteristics of the Diamond Aircraft DA40 Diamond Star and is certified as a ‘Generic Single Engine Model’. The realistic cockpit boasts true-tolife instrumentation and is based on the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit with Primary Flight Display, Multi Function Display and GFC700 autopilot. The control forces are also simulated in a realistic manner to give the student a complete sense of flight. The instructor station can be used, for example, to implement position changes and set weather scenarios statically or dynamically. Malfunctions can also be practiced with ease. During PPL training, five-hours can be flown on the FNPT I. During the CPL training up to 25 hours, and for CB-IR, 10 hours are counted on the FNPT I. FLIGHTSIM’s unique strength is that it can integrate the simulator into your ATO, and is happy to support you before, during and after the purchase of the FLIGHTSIM G1000. Cryptocurrency in Aviation Owner Trustee Transactions What is cryptocurrency? Could it work in aviation owner trustee transactions? What are the benefits and risks? Aircraft Guaranty explores the curious world of Blockchain in this first installment of a two-part series… Cryptocurrency – Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, among others – seems to be driving the plane in Financial Technology (FinTech) development these days, making many of us curious, confused, and wary.

Aircraft registration transactions in the United States currently use US dollars. If a foreign national is registering their aircraft in trust, their currency is generally exchanged before sending funds so the entire transaction is handled with only one currency. If Bitcoin or a similar cryptocurrency were accepted by an owner trustee company, the responsibility for exchanging the currency into US dollars would be theirs, and the risk too.

What, if any, is the potential for its use in aircraft owner trustee transactions? Is the use of cryptocurrency going to improve access and security in finance activities (which is the main purpose of FinTech) in aviation? Let’s begin with the basics…

There have been a few noted cases of large asset transactions using cryptocurrency for payment, specifically in real estate. If the seller can quickly liquidate the currency to avoid huge shifts in the market, then there is relatively minimal risk in the transaction.

What is it?

To begin, Blockchain (the technology that allowed for these virtual currencies to develop and is running everything behind the scenes) has four main pillars. They include: a distributed ledger, a decentralized database, immutable records, and smart contracts (digital contracts of data agreed upon). These features are important to understanding how cryptocurrencies work and their viability, but we’re going to save any further discussion of Blockchain technology and its own potential applications in aviation owner trusts for next month’s article. With this foundation, let’s answer the basics: Cryptocurrency (with the first and most notable being Bitcoin) is a digital currency that is traded on a decentralized, encrypted database in the Cloud (Blockchain) which is essentially owned by all its participants. The database records all transactions of the currency and is open to anyone who wishes to anonymously participate in the exchange. While the database allows a high level of transparency and accuracy in regard to the transaction of the currency, it does not prevent illicit activity of the currency. Furthermore, cryptocurrencies are subject to a high degree of exchange rate volatility. These are the two main issues aviation owner trustees must consider when weighing the benefits and risks of using cryptocurrency in their transactions.

Where Can it be Used?

Bitcoin specifically has seen a significant rise in value over the past year and is accordingly gaining traction as a payment option. For the airlines, travel agencies and charter companies who have already begun

accepting these currencies, it makes sense given the nature of their transactions. Many have cited the ability for 24/7 transactions, faster processing times, cheaper fees (if any), and increased customer service as reasons for accepting cryptocurrency. Some of these businesses have attempted to limit the exchange rate risk by adding a “buffer” when converting prices. They can also mitigate risk by immediately converting the cryptocurrency’s cash value into fiat currencies (legal tender backed by the government that issued it) through crypto trading platforms like Coinbase or BitPay. Partnering with these exchanges so payment can be accepted at the exact market value at the exact time of transaction is yet another option.

What are the Risks and Benefits?

Given the huge difference between airfare sales and the process of aircraft registration transactions, does it make sense for aviation owner trustee companies to accept cryptocurrency for payment? The goal in owner trustee transactions is security and efficiency. In this regard, the aircraft registration process and associated fees present some unique challenges.

It is possible then that aircraft registrations in trust could be enacted in a similar way, effectively mitigating exchange rate risk. However, lack of regulation and government integration (or acceptance) currently remain deterrents to security and efficiency in this type of transaction. Nonetheless, the United States and others are beginning to develop regulations regarding cryptocurrency transactions, increasing the odds that it will become more common in the future. In the meantime, however, it will remain a risky currency in a rapidly evolving legal environment. How and when any measures will be enforced is unknown.

In Summary…

Since aviation owner trustee companies must consider all aspects of the industry, especially compliance and security, it is unlikely that the use of cryptocurrency will be a viable option until all the other ducks – education, regulation, integration - are in a row. However, there are a myriad of uses being discussed for Blockchain technology in the aviation industry that could radically streamline the aircraft registration process, and possibly open the door for the use of cryptocurrency. STOL Competition: 2019 Zoute Air Trophy Dates Announced Pilots and aviation enthusiasts from all over Europe will meet on Knokke-Heist beach, Belgium where the 2019 Zoute Air Trophy will run from May 16-19. A Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) competition, the Zoute Air Trophy is the first and only aviation competition in the world to be held on a beach. STOL techniques were born of a need to access wild and hostile lands where the landing opportunities are sometimes only a few dozen meters along a river or in a clearing. These would usually only be accessible to helicopters. Sam Rutherford, ex-army and DEA pilot, and co-founder of the event, explains "This is the first time this type of competition has been held on the beach. We are looking forward to bringing together Belgian and international crowds in this unique setting.� The best pilots from the Zoute Air Trophy will be invited to form the European STOL team competing against the United States in Greenland the following month.

How Should Aircraft Buyers and Sellers Act Today? Sifting through the industry hype, Jet Tolbert makes

sense of the used jet marketplace as we move into Q4 2018. Are buyers or sellers justified in their

expectations? Or is reality found somewhere in

between…?

There are many buzzwords being liberally banded around the Business Aviation sales arena at present. Terms like ‘100% bonus depreciation’, ‘active market’, ‘low inventory’, ‘strong economy’ and ‘strong dollar’ are all commonly heard.

I could, of course, list many more that describe a used aircraft marketplace in which good quality jets and turboprops are getting scarce and buyers are abundant. But given all of the hype, are sellers making a sincere effort to make buyers aware that the opportunity available to them is limited as a result of competition from other buyers? Or are they trying to leverage these oft-heard buzzwords to hype the sale of their jet, and squeeze as much out of the buyer as possible? From where I’m sitting, the answer is ‘both’. The clichés that sellers throw around might seem like a hard sell, but genuine buyers are finding there’s plenty of competition for a purchase, forcing them to either step up and meet a seller’s expectation, or stand-by while other buyers make strong cash offers, risking their own opportunity to purchase. In years past, buyers were looking to purchase aircraft at tomorrow’s prices while sellers held out for yesterday’s values. Today the roles have reversed and there are even some instances in which sellers expect to achieve a sale price that is beyond what the market will bear.

What This Means to Buyers

Now, more than any other time in recent market history, buyers need to be in tune with the sellers on the market. This is ultimately achieved either by having a close and honest relationship with the seller’s representative or hiring an acquisitions agent who is very well attuned to the market. If you select an acquisition agent, you should ensure the relationship allows for an open flow of information about recent market activity and that you trust their perception of the market. An inside track on recent market activity will prove invaluable to help ensure you do not pay an unrealistic seller what they are asking, or lose out on a good acquisition to another buyer who is willing to pay that little bit more.

What This Means to Sellers

Alternatively, if you are a seller, there is much to be said about ‘cash-in-hand’ offers. No one is truly able to predict the future value of your aircraft, so an offer received today may be the best you receive - and is worth your consideration. While it is true that premium aircraft will see offers that can be considered ‘strong’ in today’s market, you will more likely find a large majority of buyers level-off in the same general pricing area. That’s not to deny that there are still the ‘one-off’ sales that occur - but waiting for an offer of this calibre can be a gamble when you consider the impact of depreciation and maintenance costs that occur to your aircraft in the meantime.

In Summary…

Today, possibly more than ever before, it’s important to trust your counterparty when contemplating an aircraft transaction. Considering how many different sellers there are in the market, the better option would be to have a well-established, experienced broker for your acquisition agent who has deep connections. This inside track will build value into the process as those deep relationships are leveraged, and their market knowledge is used to your advantage. In the current market, getting the best airplane at the best price and not missing an opportunity is a matter of being in the right place at the right time, and most importantly having the wherewithal to know when you are there. Rockwell Collins’ Pro Line Fusion flight deck for Nextant Aerospace’s Challenger 604XT “remanufactured” jet has been approved by the FAA under an STC. The aircraft will feature a 500-nautical mile range extension and increased maximum altitude to FL450, and various redesigned elements including cabin floor and cabin interior. The 604XT program is being executed “in collaboration” with Rockwell Collins and Canada’s Bombardier, which designed and manufactures Challenger aircraft. Small Jets Showing Strongest Growth Hamburg-based WingX Advance’s Business Aviation Monitor for November 2018 showed that there were 77,197 business aviation departures in Europe, up 5% year-on-year, with jets accounting for 60% and turboprops/pistons for 40% of movements. European activity overall YTD was up 3.2% compared to 2017. Small and medium-size jets had the most growth in the month (between 5 and 9% for the main countries) whereas large jet activity increased by only 1%. According to WingX CEO Richard Koe, the industry experienced “robust growth in business aviation flights within Europe, up by 4.9% YOY this month. The transatlantic market is coming back, up 10% this month against a negative YTD trend of -1%.” WingX reported both AOC and private activities up by 5% in November, “with a slightly stronger trend in business jet owner flights, showing some comeback in Q4. Strong trends in SLJ and SMJ segments in Oct, with 9% and 12% YOY gains respectively. ULR, Midsize and Light Jet activity is up 7% this month, whereas VLJ activity dropped 18%, mainly in AOC charter. Among the airports, Nice saw some decline in YOY activity “as the summer season tailed off,” while Le Bourget continued to see very strong growth, with movements up 13% YOY on a 9% YTD growth trend, said WingX. Dornier Seawings has raised an additional €150 million in funding from shareholders for further research and development of its Seastar program, the aircraft being powered by two in-line Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 turboprops, one “pushing” the other “pulling” at the front. The investment also includes construction of manufacturing facilities. The Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany-based company’s Seastar CD2 amphibious aircraft is undergoing design changes and certification tests, following the prototype’s rollout in August 2017. According to Dornier Seawings, the new funding will accelerate serial production by finalising the Seastar certification supplements and completing the production facilities in Wuxi, China, in addition to its established production line in Oberpfaffenhofen. FlexJet Europe Grows Strongly Flexjet Europe grew 150 percent in terms of flight activity in 2018 compared to 2017, according to owner Directional Aviation. It has also introduced the first of five Embraer Legacy 600s as a second aircraft type, and has added a European AOC to allow continued expansion after Brexit, with the UK due to exit the European Union on 29th March. The company’s current fleet consists of Nextant 400XTi light jets, with the fleet due to reach around 12 by the beginning of 2019. Nextant, another Directional Capital company, “remanufactures” Beechjet 400s to create Nextant 400XTis. Flexjet Europe obtained a controlling aircraft charter and management firm Sirio, based at Milan Linate Airport, to have a European AOC. Ken Ricci, Directional Capital’s founder, said, “Sirio will serve as Flexjet’s European operations control center as we take our next steps on the continent.” Part of this is a new access program tailored to customers in Europe. www.flexjet.com

Piaggio Insolvent, Faces Restructuring Piaggio Aerospace has asked the Italian courts for “extraordinary administration” to allow it to restructure. The Italian government is due to appoint a commissar to guarantee business continuity after Piaggio became insolvent in November. The OEM was attempting to follow a new five-year turnaround plan that it unveiled in December 2017, including a €255M cash injection from parent company, Mubadala, along with a debt-for-equity swap. In late November the company stated the restructuring was not working, and admitted “key fundamental assumptions of the restructuring plan approved in 2017 have not materialised… [and] the company is no longer financially sustainable.” www.piaggioaerospace.it

The PC-12 training is being offered in partnership with Oysterair, a specialist Approved Training Organisation in high performance aeroplane training. Trainees can cover both the EASA and FAA certified class rating courses – ground and flight instruction - at Oriens’ HQ. The course caters for a wide range of experience, from the PPL (A) holder with instrument rating and a minimum 200 flying hours’ experience with 70 hours pilot in command, to the most experienced pilots. Oysterair Managing Director Jonathan Shooter said, “We see this as a marriage of experience and expertise,” while Oriens CEO Edwin Brenninkmeyer said, “We know that a big obstacle for Pilatus PC-12 operations in the UK is the lack of pilots. ICAO’s new Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) was set to start on 1st January 2019, with the first two years being for benchmarking – operators will monitor their emissions. The first threeyear offsetting period (2021-2023) will be voluntary, with the scheme becoming mandatory on 1st January 2027, when offsetting is required for 2024-2026. Many smaller business aviation operators will not be affected – those affected will have aircraft above 5,700kg MTOM and emissions above 10,000 metric tons of CO2 per annum – estimated to be equivalent to a fleet that burns more than one million tons of fuel a year. According to the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC), ICAO has provided a range of templates, which shows it has listened to IBAC, EBAA and others saying small operators (often with a single aircraft) do not have the resources to administer a complex scheme. An example is CERT (CORSIA Emissions Reporting Tool). The European ETS scheme will still run, while the EU satisfies itself that CORSIA is a viable replacement, but the so-called “Stop the Clock” period, with only intra-European flights, has been extended. www.ebaa.org/environment/corsia/

Harbin Y-12 Flies Into Mt Everest Airport On 6th October, Royal Nepal Airlines officially restored the Kathmandu-Lukla route, which had been interrupted for two years. One of the airline’s twinturboprop Y-12Es, produced by AVIC subsidiary HAIG (Harbin Aircraft Industry Group) was used to carry two batches of passengers to Lukla Airport, located adjacent to the southern slopes of Mount Everest. Lukla Airport (also known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport) is located east of Nepal and is the nearest airport to Mount Everest’s southern slope base camp. ‘The airport on the roof of the world’ is the only access point to Lukla from the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu. Its elevation is 2,845 metres above sea level, with a sloping runway 30 meters in width and 527 meters in length – less than one seventh of the runway at the Beijing Capital Airport, said AVIC. “At one end of the runway is an abyss, and the other is Mount Himalaya. This airport has one of the largest slopes in the world,” added the company en.avichina.com

Viking Acquires Dash 8 Programme Viking Air parent company Longview Aviation Capital announced in November that it had agreed to buy the Dash 8 twin turboprop aircraft program from Bombardier, having purchased its amphibious aircraft division in 2018. Also included in the transaction are rights to the de Havilland name and trademark. “The Dash 8 turboprop is the perfect complement to our existing portfolio of specialised aircraft including the Twin Otter and the Canadair CL 215 and 415 series of water bombers,” said David Curtis, CEO of Longview Aviation Capital. “We see enormous value in the Dash 8 programme, with these aircraft in demand and in use all around the world.” Longview will continue to operate the program at Downsview, Ontario and keep production there until at least 2021. “We are committed to a business-as-usual approach that will see no interruption to the production, delivery and support of these outstanding aircraft,” said Curtis. “With the entire de Havilland product line reunited under the same banner for the first time in decades, we look forward to working with customers, suppliers and employees upon close of the transaction to determine what opportunities lie ahead.” The sale and transaction are expected to close by the second half of 2019. With the addition of the Dash 8 Q Series, Longview holds the type certificates and entire product line of the original de Havilland aircraft company including the Twin Otter program and the DHC-1 through DHC-7 series, as well as the former Canadair CL-215, CL-215T, and CL-415 water bombers. Italian aircraft manufacturer Leonardo celebrated an order for 15 AW139 helicopters in November. The order, which could later increase to a total of 160 aircraft, came from Sino-US Intercontinental Helicopter Investments (“Sino-US”) of China. The aircraft, which are due to be delivered between 2019 and 2021, will be used by Kingwing General Aviation for EMS missions throughout the country. Sino-US previously placed orders for 34 AW119Kx single engine helicopters, 24 AW139s and 25 AW109 Trekkers with Leonardo. Sino-US was at the same time confirmed as the exclusive distributor of Leonardo non-military helicopters in China with the planned total of 160 aircraft through 2023. Schiebel Wins EMSA Contract German unmanned helicopter builder Schiebel has been awarded a contract by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) to use its CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS for surveillance. The S-100 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) will be equipped with L3 Wescam MX-10 Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal and an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch payload, as well as an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver, said Schiebel. “Schiebel is honoured to cooperate with [EMSA],” said Hans Georg Schiebel, chairman of the Schiebel Group. “Providing CAMCOPTER S-100 for surveillance, we hope to contribute to the maritime situational awareness of EU member states.” www.schiebel.com

Michael Henriques has been appointed chairman of The County Air Ambulance Trust, having been a trustee for the past eight years. He was deputy chairman of Cheltenham Racecourse for 22 years. The County Air Ambulance Trust is the only national air ambulance charity in the UK funding life-saving hospital helipads. Its HELP Appeal has funded 25 helipads at Major Trauma Centres, key hospitals and air ambulance air bases since 2009. NAC Developing Midrand Heliport In partnership with Ultimate Helicopters, National Airways Corporation (NAC) of Lanseria, South Africa has consolidated its helicopter operations and support services at a new site, known as Midrand Heliport. It will eventually relocate its helicopter support and training activities Rand Airport and Grand Central Airport to the new site. Phase 1 includes 3,100 square m / 33,300 square feet of hangar space, a terminal building, a fuel farm, and parking for up to 16 helicopters. The new buildings will provide a total of 2,800 sq m / 30,139 sq ft for the terminal, which will include several VIP lounges, a restaurant, and crew facilities. Phase 2 of the development will add pilot training and maintenance to its capabilities. NAC CEO Martin Banner commented: “With our new world-class heliport, we can provide a unique and unmatched experience, dedicated to the helicopter community. FAA Issues AW169 Airworthiness Directive In late November the FAA followed EASA in issuing an Emergency Airworthiness Directive for the Leonardo AW169 and AW189 twin-engine helicopter tail rotor servo-actuator assemblies. The EASA Emergency AD was issued on 7th November in response to the 28th October crash of an AW169 at Leicester City Football Club ground in the UK. The FAA said it had “determined the unsafe condition exists and is likely to exist or develop on other helicopters of the same type design.” The AD requires engineers to inspect the nut, cotter pin, lock-wire, hinge bracket connected to the tail rotor servo-actuator feedback lever link, and each connection of the tail-rotor servo-actuator feedback lever-link. It also requires applying a paint stripe or torque seal on the nut. www.leonardo.com

Bristow to Acquire Columbia Helicopters Bristow Group is to acquire Columbia Helicopters, a heavy-lift specialist, for $560 million. The announcement came as Bristow’s financial results to 30th September reported a $144 million loss (on revenues of $334.7 million) including a one-time impairment charge of $117.2 million against its Airbus Helicopters H225 fleet and inventory and Eastern Airways assets. Thirty executives in the eVTOL sector from eight countries met with EASA, the EC and SESAR JU for two days in Cologne and Brussels in mid-November. Topics raised include certification, maintenance, operations, licensing, and the development of U-Space. Meanwhile GAMA has added several new members – Raisbeck Engineering of Seattle, plus six associate members from the urban mobility market. These are Ampaire, an LA-based electric aircraft developer; Robotic Skies of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Bruchsal, Germany-based Volocopter; ZeroAvia of Hollister, California; SkyRyse of Hayward, California; and Aviage of Shanghai, China. JETcopter has completed primary air turbine tests for its concept aircraft, and has released the latest design plans. The craft will be able to “drive on roads as well as fly,” said the German start-up. It will have a range of 1000km/620nm and be priced at around US$ 350,000. The 7-seat JETcopter has a rear ramp and two 400hp automotive motors powering two counter-rotating fans on top of the fuselage, airflow being diverted to four vectoring nozzles. A full-scale mock-up of the JETcopter will be presented at Aero Friedrichshafen in April 2019. www.jet-copter.com

Diamond Aircraft Flies Hybrid-Electric Multi The first flight of Diamond Aircraft’s hybrid-electric twin-engined aircraft, developed in conjunction with Siemens, took place on 31st October at Diamond’s HQ at Wiener Neustadt, Austria. A DA40 twin was reconfigured with an engine powering two independent electric drive systems, each consisting of a motor, battery and inverter. Two electric engines were added on a forward canard which, combined, generate up to 150kW of takeoff power. A diesel generator in the nose provides up to 110kW of power and two 12kWh batteries are mounted in the rear passenger compartment, and act as an energy storage buffer. The pilot has a dedicated power lever and can select either pure electric mode (generator off); cruise mode (generator provides all power to the motor); or charge mode (generator charges the batteries). Pure electric, the aircraft has an endurance of approximately 30minutes. The hybrid system extends this to 5 hours. “This is the first serial-hybrid electric plane in the world with two electrically powered free-stream propellers and one combustion engine,” said Dr. Frank Anton, executive vice president e-aircraft at Siemens. During the 20 minute first flight, the aircraft demonstrated hybrid mode, charging flight and full electric flight. A full electric takeoff was demonstrated which lead to a significantly lower noise footprint. Ingmar Mayerbuch, head of flight test at Diamond Aircraft, who piloted the aircraft, said, “The first flight exceeded all our expectations. The combination of the hybrid powertrain and the configuration of the aircraft is just perfect. We reached 130 knots at medium power output and climbed to an altitude of 3,000 feet.” www.diamondaircraft.com

Eviation Chooses Harzell Props for Alice Tel-Aviv, Israel-based Eviation selected Hartzell to develop the propellers for Alice, its 9-seat, 565nm-range e-aircraft. Alice will be an all-electric regional and business aeroplane with a three-bladed pusher prop plus two-bladed pusher props on its wingtips. Kopter Commences the Next Phase of SH09 Development

Kopter was in celebratory mood recently when P3 achieved the necessary technical clearance and regulatory compliance to begin flight tests, moving SH09 development and certification to the next stage... Designed in Switzerland and assembled at the Kopter facility at Mollis airfield, P3 incorporates several improvements and modifications based on feedback resulting from the testing of Kopter prototypes P1 and P2. P3 flew from Mollis airfield for 40 minutes and successfully completed its first flight test schedule, which included a series of manoeuvres aimed at obtaining preliminary flight data, validating test design features and evaluating flight qualities. Handling Characteristics “P3 demonstrated excellent handling characteristics…I expect Kopter to make rapid progress in development of the SH09,” Richard Trueman, Kopter’s chief test pilot reported after the flight. Also aboard P3 for its inaugural flight were Michele Riccobono, Kopter chief technical officer and head of flight operations, and Adam Reynolds, Kopter chief flight test engineer. “I am very pleased with P3,” Riccobono reported. “The Kopter design team have developed this latest SH09 to bring forward Kopter development and certification activity over the coming months. With P3 we have a key tool for this task.” PS4 on the Way… While P3 will continue the development of the SH09 by performing an intensive flight test campaign in Sicily (Pozzallo, Province of Ragusa), the Kopter

team in Mollis will finalize the preparation of the next prototype, the Pre-Series #4 (PS4), which will join P3 in 2019 and undertake flight testing in Sicily. In addition to its essential contribution to the development aircraft, the Mollis team will set its future focus on upgrading the existing facility into a fullyoperational commercial production centre. “I am proud of the Kopter team and its ability to develop the next generation single engine rotorcraft,” said Andreas Lowenstein, Kopter chief executive officer. “With P3 we are set on the path towards delivery to our customers. “We have seen a tremendous response from the market for the SH09, which offers the highest standards of safety, mission capability and cost efficiency, which our customers are asking for.” More information from www.koptergroup.com
